Oral History Adds Heritage<lb />
To Costa Rican Children<lb />
By VIRGINA LIVINGSTON<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Paula Palmer, after spending a<lb />
decade collecting oral histories,<lb />
said she was surprised at the reac-<lb />
tion of the children involved in<lb />
the study.<lb />
"What surprised me most was<lb />
that the children said they en-<lb />
joyed the chance to get to know<lb />
their grandparents and the older<lb />
people of the community said<lb />
Palmer.<lb />
Palmer was the featured<lb />
speaker at the workshop on "The<lb />
Use of Oral History to Promote<lb />
Ethnic Identity in School and<lb />
Community Settings" that was<lb />
held Monday at the Willis<lb />
Building.<lb />
Holly Matthews of the<lb />
sociology department said<lb />
Palmer's work in the Talamanca<lb />
region came from her work as a<lb />
Peace Corp worker in community<lb />
development. She found the in-<lb />
habitants of Talamanca, Bri-Bn<lb />
Indians and the decendents of<lb />
Carribean Blacks who had come<lb />
to work on railroad construction,<lb />
to be a group of people with a<lb />
rich and fully developed culture.<lb />
Palmer also found these people<lb />
were facing cultural extinction.<lb />
Because of dense jungle, the<lb />
people of Talamanca were never<lb />
integrated with the rest of Costa<lb />
Rica and were left to develop on<lb />
their own. Then in the 1960's the<lb />
Costa Rican government saw<lb />
Talamanca as a region for poten-<lb />
tial growth in the tourist and<lb />
lumber industry. The Costa<lb />
Rican government did away with<lb />
the schools and clinics started by<lb />
the Talamancans and replaced<lb />
those centers with government<lb />
centers staffed by Spanish speak-<lb />
ing Costa Ricans.<lb />
When Palmer arrived in 1974<lb />
she found the Talamancan<lb />
children were losing sight of their<lb />
heritage and sought a way to<lb />
reverse this process.<lb />
She began a classroom project<lb />
where students interviewed the<lb />
elders of the community and<lb />
recorded the different folktales,<lb />
histories, and legends that these<lb />
people knew. The result was<lb />
What Happen: A Folk History of<lb />
the Talamanca Coast.<lb />
The response this book<lb />
generated was unexpected. The<lb />
Talamancans were proud of this<lb />
history and cultural cohesion<lb />
resulted. Committees were form-<lb />
ed to deal with economic<lb />
development and cultural<lb />
developments.<lb />
The Costa Rican government<lb />
started sponsoring the project<lb />
and used material from the stu-<lb />
dent's research to publish<lb />
Nuestra Talamanca Ayer Ymoy a<lb />
magazine used as a textbook in<lb />
Costa Rican classrooms.<lb />
The sponsors of the workshop<lb />
hope that similar techniques<lb />
could be applied in area schools.<lb />
Matthews sees such a project as<lb />
a tool to motivate minority-<lb />
students to explore their own<lb />
histories.<lb />

An administrative reorganiza-<lb />
tion of the School of Education<lb />
at ECU, designed to streamline<lb />
its management and increase effi-<lb />
ciency, has been approved and<lb />
placed in effect.<lb />
Two major divisions cur-<lb />
riculum and instruction and a<lb />
division of services have been<lb />
created and a new degree pro-<lb />
gram added. Recommended by<lb />
an eight-member planning com-<lb />
mittee appointed last August, the<lb />
changes followed discussions<lb />
with the entire School of Educa-<lb />
tion faculty, ECU administrators<lb />
and the university's Long Range<lb />
Planning Commission.<lb />
Angelo A. Volpe, vice<lb />
chancellor for Acadmic Affairs,<lb />
said the goal is greater excellence<lb />
in teacher preparation.<lb />
"The preparation of teachers.<lb />
administrators and other school<lb />
personnel is now and always has<lb />
been a major concern for East<lb />
Carolina University Volpe<lb />
said. "It is vitally important for<lb />
eastern North Carolina and<lb />
beyond that our program be the<lb />
very best anywhere<lb />
Charles R. Coble, dean of the<lb />
School of Education, said the<lb />
reorganization is part of a com-<lb />
mitment to make it "the top<lb />
school of education anywhere.<lb />
"I truly believe that we have<lb />
the best opportunitv to rebuild all<lb />
of our programs based on the<lb />
new research base for teacher<lb />
education Coble said. "This<lb />
ambitious goal is achievable<lb />
because of the climate for change<lb />
in the school, and the suport for<lb />
change by the administration and<lb />
the larger community<lb />
Details of the reorganization<lb />
include:<lb />
In the Division of Services will<lb />
be: Student Teaching and Field<lb />
Experiences, Field Services,<lb />
Wahl-Coates School Liaison, the<lb />
Rural Education Institute and<lb />
Grants Research Specialist.<lb />
In the Division of Curriculum<lb />
and Instruction will be: Depart-<lb />

Department of Counselor Educa-<lb />
tion, Department of Educational<lb />
Administration and Supervision<lb />
and two additional re-named<lb />
departments. Elementary and<lb />
Middle Grades and the Depart-<lb />
ment of Foundations, Research<lb />
and Media.<lb />
The divisions will be headed by<lb />
directors selected from the facul-<lb />
ty. Coble announced that Betty<lb />
Levey will serve as director of the<lb />
Division of Services and William<lb />
C. Sanderson will serve in an ad-<lb />
ministrative position as director<lb />
of the Division of Curriculum<lb />
and Instruction and Assistant<lb />
Dean.<lb />
Thomas Chambliss, who has<lb />
served as assistant dean and<lb />
director of Student Teaching, will<lb />
become acting chair of the<lb />
Department of Foundations,<lb />
Research and Media, Coble said.<lb />
Other assignments of leader-<lb />
ship and management respon-<lb />
sibilities under the reorganization<lb />
include:<lb />
Marjortc Calhoun as coor-<lb />
dinator of Student Teaching and<lb />
Field Experience.<lb />
Parmalee Hawk as coordinator<lb />
of field services.<lb />
Helen Logan to continue to<lb />
serve as Wahl-Coates School<lb />
Liaison.<lb />
Christine Fitch to continue to<lb />
serve as GrantsResearch<lb />
specialist.<lb />
John Richards to continue to<lb />
serve as chair of the Department<lb />
of Special Education.<lb />
Florence Weaver to continue to<lb />
serve as chair of the Department<lb />
of Counselor Education.<lb />
Vila Rosenfeld to serve as<lb />
coordinator of secondary educa-<lb />
tion in the Department of Foun-<lb />
dations, Research and Media.<lb />
Patricia Terrell to continue to<lb />
serve as acting chair of the<lb />
Department of Elementary and<lb />
Middle Grades Education. The<lb />
faculty will vote in August for a<lb />
department chair.<lb />
Wilton Joyner to continue to<lb />
serve as acting chair of the<lb />
Department of Administration<lb />
and Supervision.<lb />
The new degree program,<lb />
transferred to education from the<lb />
School of Home Economics, will<lb />
be part of the responsioilities of<lb />
the coordinator of Secondary<lb />
Education. The REAP program<lb />
will continue to be in the Depart-<lb />
ment of Special Education.<lb />
A search will begin to fill the<lb />
position created by the resigna-<lb />
tion of Roy Forbes as director of<lb />
the Rural Education Institute and<lb />
Coble said an acting chairperson<lb />
will be appointed for the Depart-<lb />

Medical Programs Pass Screening<lb />
By RUSTY HARRINGTON<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
ECU's Medical School has had<lb />
their Continuing Medical Educa-<lb />
tion programs re-accredited by<lb />
the Accreditation Council for<lb />
Continuing Medical Education<lb />
for a six-year period.<lb />
According to Edwin Monroe,<lb />
senior associated dean and direc-<lb />
tor of continuing medical educa-<lb />
tion, the re-accreditation means<lb />
the programs have met the stan-<lb />
dards of the national CME ac-<lb />
creditation body, as well as give<lb />
recognition to the program itself.<lb />
The CME program provided<lb />
about 600 courses and was at-<lb />
tended by about 10,000 health<lb />
care professionals in 1985-86.<lb />
The community based program<lb />
sponsors continuing education<lb />
programs, as well as joint ac-<lb />
tivities with the ECU school of<lb />
medicine.<lb />
According to Monroe, the ac-<lb />
creditation process involves<lb />
evaluations based on standards<lb />
adopted by the American<lb />
Medical Association, the<lb />
American Hospital Association,<lb />
and other medical societies and<lb />
organizations which sponsor the<lb />
Accreditation Council.<lb />
New Center Offers Supervised Health Care For Elderly<lb />
By PATRICK O'NEIL<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
A new program offering a<lb />
supervised health-oriented day<lb />
care environment for adults<lb />
opened in Greenville last week.<lb />
The Creative Living Center of-<lb />
fers care to middle aged and<lb />
elderly adults who require limited<lb />
New Food<lb />
medical support each day. The<lb />
participants include stoke vic-<lb />
tims, individuals with functional<lb />
deficiencies caused by old age<lb />
and adults who require daily<lb />
medical attention.<lb />
The concept of adult day care<lb />
originated in the 1950's but did<lb />
not effectively catch on until the<lb />
1960's. Connie Kuenzi, the direc-<lb />
tor of the Creative Living Center<lb />
cited funding as the reason for a<lb />
slow beginning.<lb />
Pitt County offers some sup-<lb />
port for the program as well as<lb />
Medicaid and some insurance<lb />
program.<lb />
Once in the program, the par-<lb />
ticipant undergoes an assessment<lb />
of capabilities and a goal is<lb />
established which is reached<lb />
through activities planned<lb />
especially for the individual.<lb />
The program offers par-<lb />
ticipants a sense of community by<lb />
interacting with members of their<lb />
own peer group, and new<lb />
methods of completing daily ac-<lb />
tivities. It also helps to restore<lb />
much of the participants self<lb />
esteem.<lb />
Families of participants also<lb />
benefit from the program, allow-<lb />
ing them to spend more time pur-<lb />
suing their interests and giving<lb />
them more time to spend with<lb />
other family members.<lb />
The program also offers<lb />
something for students at ECU.<lb />
The Center will serve as a place-<lb />
ment tor students in the<lb />
Cooperative Education program<lb />
whose field of study is geron-<lb />
tology.<lb />
Currently, the facilites for the<lb />
Center are provided bv St. James<lb />
United Methodist Church. In two<lb />
to three years, the Center hopes<lb />
to rehabilitate or build new<lb />

Rudolph Alexander, dean of<lb />

Canteen because of the quality of<lb />
food they would offer, prices,<lb />
returns to the university, and<lb />
potential for expansion. Among<lb />
the criteria used to evaluate pro-<lb />
posals were the types of food, it's<lb />

and grades of food.<lb />
Assistant to the vice-chancellor<lb />
Rob Warren said Canteen has<lb />
proposed changes for the Galley<lb />
and the Snack Bar in<lb />
Mendenhall.<lb />
Warren stressed that any pro-<lb />

approved by the university.<lb />
Canteen proposes to change<lb />
the decor in the Galley and ex-<lb />
pand the menu by offering pizza.<lb />
Also, Canteen hopes to add a<lb />
fresh baked goods counter and an<lb />
international coffee area in<lb />
Mendenhall's Snack Bar.<lb />
"I think most of the changes<lb />

HOUSTON (UPI) - The wife<lb />
of the space shuttle Challenger's<lb />
pilot today criticized NASA for<lb />
showing "shockingly sparse con-<lb />

warnings against launching the<lb />
doomed orbiter.<lb />
In a statement issued from the<lb />
home oi relatives in Charlotte,<lb />
N.C Jane Jarrell Smith, wife of<lb />
pilot Michael Smith, said she<lb />
avoided reaching any conclusions<lb />
aboul the Jan. 28 tragedy until<lb />
the completion ol the Rogers<lb />
Commission investigation of the<lb />
incident.<lb />
Smith said the commission<lb />
report, released June 9, "ap-<lb />

first public comment about the<lb />
commission report by any-<lb />
relative of the seven crew<lb />
members killed when Challenger<lb />
exploded.<lb />
The report stemmed from a<lb />
four-month probe of the disaster<lb />
commissioned by President<lb />

state and attorney general.<lb />
The report reflects incredibly<lb />

engineers who argued against lit<lb />

out of concern the low<lb />
temperatures at the launch site<lb />
could cause the booster joint to<lb />

Smith also told United Press<lb />

have placed safety first in<lb />
deciding whether to launch the<lb />
shuttle.<lb />
"I think he would have been<lb />
very much for safety she said<lb />
"Being a test pilot, having been a<lb />

New Philippine Government<lb />
Begins Suit Against Marcos<lb />
LOS ANGELES (UPI) A<lb />
federal judge has frozen nearly<lb />
S12 million in property belonging<lb />
to ousted Philippine President<lb />
Ferdinand Marcos until a lawsuit<lb />
accusing him of bilking his coun-<lb />
try of $1.55 billion can be tried.<lb />
The restraining order was the<lb />
first legal step in a $54.6 billion<lb />
racketeering lawsuit filed Mon-<lb />
day by the government of Presi-<lb />
dent Corazon Aquino against the<lb />
deposed Philippine leader.<lb />
The new government is also<lb />
trying to seize properties in New<lb />
York and Texas that may be own-<lb />
ed by Marcos.<lb />
Lawyers for Aquino's govern-<lb />
ment requested the court order to<lb />
stop Marcos from disposing of or<lb />
hiding the assets heiore a trial on<lb />
the lawsuit, which accuses Mar-<lb />
cos o looting his country oi<lb />

rule.<lb />
Monday's order covers a $4<lb />

U.S. District Judge Mariana<lb />
Pfaelzer excluded from her order<lb />
millions in dollars in cash and<lb />
bonds that the Marcoses brought<lb />
to Hawaii. Marcos sued the<lb />
Customs Service after that pro-<lb />
perty was impounded, and a<lb />
federal judge in Hawaii ruled he<lb />
was entitled to get the assets<lb />
back.<lb />
Pfaeler scheduled a June 25<lb />
hearing on whether to issue a<lb />
preliminary injunction to keep<lb />
the assets inaccessible pending a<lb />
trial.<lb />
suii accuses Marcos, his<lb />

which allows plaintiffs t recovei<lb />

stolen, or $4.6 billion in this case.<lb />
It also seeks $50 billion in<lb />
punitive damages.<lb />
"If there was ever an enterprise<lb />
perpetuated through gangsterism<lb />
and racketeeringthis is it said<lb />
Richard Kendall, a lawyer for the<lb />
Aquino government.<lb />
He said the home in Beverly<lb />
Hills was transferred between<lb />
"shell corporations" secretly<lb />
controlled by Marcos to hide the<lb />
property.<lb />
John Bartko, a lawyer for<lb />
Marcos, said Pfaelzer had no<lb />
jurisdiction to hear the suit and<lb />
accused the Aquino government<lb />
of "trying in our courts whether<lb />
the former president of the<lb />
Philippines acted properly during<lb />
his presidency<lb />
Arguing for the emergency<lb />

Tax-Reform<lb />
Saying No To IRA Deductions<lb />
n t o Rr;<lb />
Senators Alfonse D'Amato of<lb />
New York, Alan Cranston of<lb />
California, Chris Dodd of Connec-<lb />
ticut, and Frank Murkowski of<lb />
Alaska are leading the charge to<lb />
restore the IRA deduction to the<lb />
tax-reform bill.<lb />
To pay for this ten-billion-dollar-<lb />
a-year item, they want to "tem-<lb />
porarily" suspend tax indexing. It<lb />
would be hard to think of a more<lb />
insidiously regressive trade-oft.<lb />
Although millions of people have<lb />
IRAs, the benefits are heavily skew-<lb />
ed. High-income people are more<lb />
likely to have IRAs, contribute<lb />
larger amounts, and since<lb />
they're in a higher bracket save<lb />
more in taxes for each dollar they<lb />
deduct.<lb />
Indexing also benefits everyone,<lb />
but the overwhelming benefits goes'<lb />
to low-income people. The stan-<lb />
dard deduction and exemption play<lb />
a much larger proportional role in<lb />
determining their tax burden than<lb />
the tax burden of those who are<lb />
better-off. To let inflation erode the<lb />
value of these deductions in order<lb />
to finance IRA deductions is the<lb />
height of unfairness.<lb />

ment treaties per year with the Soviet Union<lb />
These notoriously result in nothing. We may as well re-<lb />
enact the Kellogg-Bnand Pact. Remember'7 That was the one<lb />
in the late '20s in which all the signatories forswore war as an<lb />
instrument o policy. It was the black mass that preceded<lb />
World War 11.<lb />
Sen. Albert Core Jr. o Tennessee has taken front and<lb />
.enter in the controversy and gives, in a prominentlv featured<lb />
op-ed piece in the New York limes, five reasons why what<lb />
Mr. Reagan did was not only wrong, but so wrong that<lb />
history will record it as his greatest error.<lb />
Don't you see. Mr. Gore writes, the Soviet I nion has a<lb />
"hot" production line for the production o intercontinental<lb />
ballistic missiles, "and can quickly expand the number o<lb />
warheads on its already deployed SS-18 heavy mi,Mies. Bv<lb />
contrast, we have one 'lukewarm' production line and no real<lb />
abilitv to quickly increase the number o warheads we have<lb />
deployed<lb />
But surely this is beside the point at this juncture We have<lb />
heard it said now for almost fj vears that we are talking<lb />
about redundancy, that we have enough inventory to destrov<lb />
the Soviet Union 10 times (or whatever) and that the Soviets<lb />
have complementary inventory. So that if thev increase it,<lb />
why should this worry us?<lb />
Already the Soviet Union has what it needs to destroy our<lb />
land-based missiles, so that in any event we are depending on<lb />
the other two legs ot our triad: the bombers and the sub-<lb />
marines. Unless the Soviet Union figures out a wav to develop<lb />
a missile that will find our bombers in the air and our sub-<lb />
marines in the ocean, it will not seriously alter the balance bv<lb />
increasing its invei<lb />

There is a subtle point here, though it works against the<lb />

Populism: Straddling The Fence<lb />
By ROBKRTKITTNKR<lb />
lh Sro KipuMi,<lb />
The vogue of populism, that<lb />
peculiarly American blend of the con-<lb />
servative and the radical, continues to<lb />
grow. Republican conservative con-<lb />
gressmen Jack Kemp, Newt Gingrich,<lb />
and Vin Weber, among others, think<lb />
they have a formula for a right-wing<lb />
populism, called the Conservative Op-<lb />
portunity Society.<lb />
Twenty-eight Democratic members<lb />
of Congress, who are unashamed to<lb />
run and win as economic progressives,<lb />
have formed a left-wing Populist<lb />
Caucus. The parties are outdoing each<lb />
other to champion that stunningly<lb />
populist cause, tax reform.<lb />
Is populism fundamentally liberal or<lb />
conservative? The question was<lb />
debated recently at a one-day con-<lb />
ference sponsored by the New Populist<lb />
forum, a nonprofit offshoot of the<lb />
Populist Causus. As political analyst<lb />
William Schneider and conservative<lb />
strategist Kevin Phillips agreed,<lb />
populism is "ideologically<lb />
ambiguous anti-elitist, economically<lb />
left-wing, and socially right-wing.<lb />
William Jennings Bryan, who began<lb />
his long career as an economic radical<lb />
and ended it defending religious fun-<lb />
damentalism, was the quintessential<lb />
populist. As a political tendency,<lb />
populism comes to the fore whenever<lb />
large regions or sectors of the economy-<lb />
find themselves left out of a generaliz-<lb />
ed prosperity and unable to cope with<lb />
larger economic forces. Today that<lb />
might describe farmers, industrial<lb />
workers, miners, working mothers,<lb />
small fry in the energy industry, and<lb />
much of the Midwest and Southwest<lb />
generally. No wonder populism is mak-<lb />
ing a comeback.<lb />
Politically, though the Democrats<lb />
seemingly have the more natural claim<lb />
to populism, neither party really own<lb />
it. Neither is consistently economically<lb />
radical and socially conservative.<lb />
When Democrats emphasize their<lb />
economic populism, culturally conser-<lb />
vative small-town or urban Catholic<lb />
voters are willing to forgive<lb />
Democrats' more liberal social views,<lb />
and vote for the Democrats on<lb />
economic grounds.<lb />
Conversely, when Republicans com-<lb />
bine their usual cultural conservatism<lb />
with some sensitivity to the economic-<lb />
needs of the common citizen, they can<lb />
win the allegiance o the non-rich,<lb />
despite their upper-class hard core.<lb />
Seen through this lens, the political<lb />
turmoil o' the past two decades<lb />
becomes easier to interpret. In the<lb />
1970s, according to Wiliam Schneider,<lb />
the Democrats stiayed from their<lb />
bread-and-butter economic populism<lb />
and embraced both statism and the ex-<lb />
perimental cultural values of the<lb />
wayward upper class both fatally-<lb />
alienating to populist voters.<lb />
The federal government, which in<lb />
the 1930s was a vehicle of anti-<lb />
establishment empowerment, had<lb />
become the quintessential establisment<lb />
institution. The Republicans mean-<lb />
while managed to contrive both an er-<lb />
satz economic populism (an economic<lb />
recovery based on military Keyne-<lb />
sianis, tax relief, and a co-optation of<lb />
progressive economic icons such as<lb />
Roosevelt, Truman, and Kennedy) as<lb />
well as a more overt appeal to cultural<lb />
conservatism (religious and family<lb />
values, jingoism).<lb />
The 1984 election was the apotheosis<lb />
of this trend. The two Democratic<lb />
front-runners both had a glimmer of<lb />
the old populist economics, but both<lb />
fumbled it. Gary Hart perceived a new<lb />
economic out-group: the young.<lb />
His slogan "the future" was a<lb />
way of telegraphing empathy with the<lb />
worries of the baby-boom generation<lb />
that they might never live as well as<lb />
their parents. But Hart failed to fill in<lb />
convincing details, and in his haste to<lb />
distance himself from Walter Mondale<lb />
he succeeded only in alienating other,<lb />
more traditional populist constituen-<lb />
cies, such as blacks and blue-collar<lb />
voters. Mondale, for his part, had the<lb />
traditional constituencies, but he was<lb />
so intimidated by the economics ol<lb />
budget-balancing that he failed<lb />
deliver anything for the populist voters<lb />
save some old-time rhetoric and the<lb />
promise to increase their taxes. And he<lb />
was so beholden to the Democrats'<lb />
own business allies that he failed to<lb />
take up winning populist issues such as<lb />
tax reform. Each leading Democratic<lb />
candidate played to his weakness<lb />
In short, the public-opinion polls<lb />
seem to suggest that the Democrats<lb />
need to move right on social and<lb />
perhaps defense issues, but left on<lb />
economics. But the big-time<lb />
Democratic pols, reinforced by the<lb />
need to raise campaign-finance dollars<lb />
from the upper class, mistakenly decid-<lb />
ed to move right generally. And that<lb />
would be a serious mistake, as nearh<lb />
all the conferees at the Populist Forum<lb />
agreed. Democrats seem to do best in<lb />
elections when they stand for the<lb />
economic well-being of the common<lb />
man and woman.<lb />
Although President Reagan ana<lb />
Senator Packwood win populist points<lb />
for embracing tax reform, the coming<lb />
Senate debate will be instructive. Near-<lb />
ly all of the Gucci crowd, mounting a<lb />
last-ditch effort to put back some<lb />
loopholes, will be Republicans. If<lb />
Democratic legislators can resist the<lb />
fatal temptation to ingratiate<lb />
themselves with interest groups, they<lb />
can sit back and let Republican<lb />
senators demonstrate just how populist<lb />
the GOP really is.<lb />
1986 will be a good year for<lb />
Democratic populists in one respect.<lb />
Influence-peddling, Republican stvle,<lb />
is back in fashion. Kevin Phillips<lb />

running against the federal establish-<lb />
ment falls fiat this year, because they<lb />

hat is the difference between<lb />
lice, crabs, and scabies? How do<lb />
you get them and how do you get<lb />
rid of them?<lb />
Three species of lice are known<lb />
to infest humans: the crab louse<lb />
(also called the pubic louse), the<lb />
body louse and the head louse.<lb />
The crab louse is shorter than the<lb />
other two types and can be found<lb />
in hairy places other than the<lb />
pubic area (armpits, beard,<lb />
eyelashes, etc.). The head louse is<lb />
almost always found on head<lb />
hair.<lb />
Head and body lice are<lb />
transmitted by sharing combs,<lb />
towels and other personal items.<lb />
Pubic lice may be picked up from<lb />
objects as well as by sexual con-<lb />
tact. Both adult lice and their<lb />
eggs (nits) can be seen by the nak-<lb />
ed eye upon close inspection.<lb />
Scabies is a skin disease caused<lb />
by an organism not visible to the<lb />
naked eye call the "itch mite<lb />
Scabies is spread by direct con-<lb />
tact with another person who is<lb />
infested including shaking hands.<lb />
Exchanging clothing or sharing a<lb />
bed or towels is also a means of<lb />
spreading scabies, however the<lb />
scabies mite does not survive long<lb />
in clothes or linens.<lb />
It is usually best to seek profes-<lb />
sional help for the diagnosis and<lb />
treatment oi lice, crabs, and<lb />
scabies. The most commonly us-<lb />
ed prescription medication used<lb />
for treating all three conditions is<lb />
Kwell. The person may also need<lb />
medications to relieve itching.<lb />
Several non -prescription<lb />
medicines are available including<lb />
RID, Triple X, and R & C Spray.<lb />
Ask a pharmacist how to use<lb />
them properly. Other measures<lb />
that should be taken to prevent<lb />
reinfestation include:<lb />
Wash clothing, towels, and bed<lb />
linens in hot water (dry cleaning<lb />
is also effective).<lb />
 Non-washable items can be<lb />
sprayed with disinfectants con-<lb />
taining pyrethin-piperonyl butox-<lb />
ide such as Raid and Black Flag.<lb />
Other people who might be in-<lb />
fected (roommates, friends, sex-<lb />
ual partners) must be treated at<lb />
the same time to avoid reinfesta-<lb />
tion.<lb />

Other Bright Colors will appear at New Deli Fridaj night. Members<lb />
are ilett to right) lorn Pafford, James Funsten, Brian Butler and<lb />
Joe Jaw.rki.<lb />
The band scheduled to play<lb />
this Friday night at New Deli,<lb />
Other Bright Colors, will not ap-<lb />
pear in this article due to limita-<lb />
tions of time and space. In its<lb />
stead, bassist Tom Pafford will<lb />
present and retract far-reaching<lb />
statements about religion,<lb />
erotica, headlines and beer.<lb />
"What do 1 listen to, when I'm<lb />
just listening to music? Robert<lb />
Johnson. That's a deep musical<lb />
experience. It's kind of<lb />
possessed, you know?"<lb />
You mean, occult or<lb />
sornething?<lb />
"I mean he's the type who<lb />
would get down on his knees and<lb />
confess his sins and he has sins<lb />
to confess! He kind of lays down<lb />
the law<lb />
It's funny, bui I don't hear<lb />
much of a blues influence in your<lb />
music<lb />
"Well, there's not much sense<lb />
playing blues anymore. It's like<lb />
these rockabilly bands. I don't<lb />
like revival rockabilly. Who<lb />
wants to hear revival rockabilly?<lb />
It's been done before.<lb />
"I want to listen to Captain<lb />
Beefheart. We want to listen to<lb />
Captain Beefheart. But it's kind<lb />
of hard to listen to. His band<lb />
sounds they sound like they're<lb />
trying really hard to dig their way<lb />
out of a hole, a hole somebody<lb />
dug for them, or one they dug<lb />
themselves, I don't know.<lb />
"But 1 don't think about<lb />
what's going on in music today<lb />
very much. I think about certain<lb />
songs that stick in my head I<lb />
like Judy Garland<lb />
What about an album don't<lb />
you pLn to release an album<lb />
soon ?<lb />
"Erotica is another important<lb />
thing, a very important thing. We<lb />
plan to do a lot of shows where<lb />
we'll be naked<lb />
Are you serious?<lb />
"Pretty serious. Maybe at the<lb />
New Deli Friday. I believe you<lb />
have to give people something to<lb />
get excited about.<lb />
"It's like the news. It has to be<lb />
news, or people aren't going to<lb />
be interested in it. Like writing a<lb />
story on a band coming to town.<lb />
So what? What's newsworthy<lb />
about that? 'Other Bright Colors<lb />
To Play At New Deli Fridav'<lb />
Where's the news?"<lb />
Well, I was thinking about<lb />
maybe an informative article,<lb />
sort of about who you guys<lb />
are<lb />
"An idea that's been kicking<lb />
around in my head lately is<lb />
'Bloody Battle In New Deli<lb />
People, when they're reading the<lb />
paper, a lot of times they're pret-<lb />
ty bored.<lb />
"Like how about 'Musical<lb />
Legends Come No, people<lb />
are bored with musical legends,<lb />
too. Maybe a headline like 'ECU<lb />
Students Have Reason To Fear<lb />
God, Says OBC Band Member<lb />
That might do it<lb />
was going to ask you whether<lb />
you like to play in Greenville, and<lb />
what you like about it. Is it the<lb />
people?<lb />
"The firs! time we played at<lb />
New Deli, it was like being a<lb />
Christian in a Roman coliseum.<lb />
There was a religious difference<lb />
between us and a lot of those peo-<lb />
ple people were reaching up<lb />
and touching us, and throwii .<lb />
things a lot of people seem to<lb />
get really drunk in Greenville.<lb />
"But as far as a news event<lb />
before the band gets there,<lb />
there's no news. It's while the<lb />
band's plavmg that there<lb />
It seems like then<lb />
to say for providing inforn i<lb />
though<lb />
"Take great spoi<lb />
They're like great pulp<lb />
They say the el<lb />

them, you trust them.<lb />

Tough day. It's hot, humid;<lb />

What can you do?<lb />
Here's what you do: go to the<lb />
Plaza Cinemas, buy yourself a<lb />
Coke and a big box of popcorn,<lb />
and sit down in a cool, dark<lb />
theater to see Ferris Beuller's Day<lb />
Off the best movie so far this<lb />
summer.<lb />
A John Hughes film, Ferris<lb />
Beuller's Day Off stars Matthew<lb />
Broderick (War Games, Lady<lb />
Hawk) in the title role, and Alan<lb />
Ruck as Cameron, his best<lb />
friend. The movie follows Ferris,<lb />
Cameron and Sloan (Ferris's<lb />
girlfriend, played by Mia Sara)<lb />
through the most wonderful day<lb />
of hookey-playing since Tom<lb />
Sawyer. We, by the way, are<lb />
along for the ride and Ferris<lb />
often takes a moment to talk to<lb />
us elaborating on themes, in-<lb />
troducing characters, etc. a<lb />
device that works well.<lb />
The entire movie, in I<lb />
works well. From the beginning,<lb />
Ferris Beuller's Day Off is laugh-<lb />
out-loud funny, but that's far<lb />
from being its single virtue. The<lb />
movie can be at times slapstick<lb />
and at other times quietly mov-<lb />
ing.<lb />
FILM<lb />
It is a visually effective movie<lb />
also, and its slickness is a credit<lb />
to its director, Hughes, who also<lb />
gave us Sixteen Candles and The<lb />
Breakfast Club I'm beginning to<lb />
wonder if we shouldn't be sen-<lb />

That said, however, the crown-<lb />

Local Musicians Depart For Germany<lb />
B JOHN SHANNON<lb />
UfmivlA hdi'u'<lb />
Light years ago, Daniel Penn-<lb />
ington was experimenting with<lb />
hesiers in Mt. Holly, N.C.<lb />
Tracy Cain was just giving in to<lb />
friends who insisted that the<lb />
guitar should be played upright<lb />
rather than flat on the lap. Both<lb />
musicians have come a long way,<lb />
and neither would ever have<lb />
guessed that they would be taking<lb />
their collaborative musical effort<lb />
to Germany in the summer of<lb />
'86.<lb />
The two played in their group's<lb />
first incarnation in July, 1985,<lb />
opening for Other Bright Colors<lb />
at the Milestone in Charlotte.<lb />
Pennington says, "We like Other<lb />
Bright Colors a lot. We've<lb />
travelled to see them, and we've<lb />
played with them four times.<lb />
They're a big influence<lb />
For a while after that first gig,<lb />
Daniel and Tracy were the only<lb />
stable core around which several<lb />
bands collected. "In the past<lb />
year, I've played with six bass<lb />
players, four drummers, seven<lb />
guitarists and one other keys<lb />
player said Pennington, "and<lb />
we had bands with all those peo-<lb />
ple<lb />
One of the guitarists turned out<lb />
to be ju the group <lb />
Rob Frayser. "The band opened<lb />
op a whole new door for me. gave<lb />
me a chance to play electric guitar<lb />
in a group context said<lb />
frayser. "What I tried to bring<lb />
the band is my philosophy<lb />
on loose jams, which I think add<lb />
spontaneity to the music and<lb />
make it more fun<lb />
Pennington said he is a<lb />
classically trained pianist and<lb />
vocalist. He sang with the<lb />
Charlotte Opera, and originally<lb />
came to ECl to study voice and<lb />
piano in the School oi Music.<lb />
Pennington writes most of the<lb />
band's lyrics as well as arranging<lb />
and doing some producing on the<lb />
band's recorded work.<lb />
"We've recorded live songs<lb />
recently, hopefully for an EP<lb />
said Pen rung'on. "We recorded<lb />
here in Greenville at EBDB<lb />
Sound. David Blount, the<lb />
engineer, did a really good job<lb />
Three of the recorded songs were<lb />
written by Pennington and Cain,<lb />
one by Frayser and one by Penn-<lb />
ington and Frayser.<lb />
The current line-up of Dirty<lb />
Little Secrets includes drummer<lb />
Dan Davis, who has been a core<lb />
member of the group since<lb />
January and bassist Bill Pridgen,<lb />
who joined the band a month<lb />
ago.<lb />
"Dirty Little Secrets as the<lb />
group is currently dubbed, plays<lb />
mostly original music. Penn-<lb />
ington describes their sound as<lb />
"free-form, very free-form. We<lb />
like to jam, and that's pretty<lb />
much what it is we get out<lb />
there and jam But that doesn't<lb />
mean their sound is esoteric or<lb />
dischordant, as the term "free-<lb />
form" might imply. Instead, says<lb />
Pennington, "our music is pret-<lb />
ty. I think that's a rare quality<lb />
these days<lb />
When Cain and Pennington<lb />
move to Germany, they drop<lb />
the name "Dirty Little Secrets<lb />
Cain said. The pair are moving to<lb />
Karlsruhe, in West Germany,<lb />
where Pennington's wife lives.<lb />
Pennington is leaving June 26,<lb />
and Cain is going later, probably<lb />
in August.<lb />
Asked about his musical goals,<lb />
Cain said, "I want to keep going<lb />
until it gets to where it's not fun<lb />
anymore. Money is not my<lb />
motivation. I plan to play outside<lb />
the band, too. There's music I'd<lb />
like to play that would be too<lb />
weird to do with the band<lb />
Once settled in Karlsruhe, Pen-<lb />
nington plans to attend college, a<lb />
goal shared by Cain. But a lot<lb />
depends on what happens<lb />
musically. "We'll be looking for<lb />
a drummer when we get there<lb />
said Pennington. "We already<lb />
have a keyboardist lined up.<lb />
"We want to make a living at<lb />
it. That's the bottom line. 1 see<lb />
our music taking on a more pro-<lb />
gressive edge we're still trying<lb />
to find our groove<lb />
"I'd even like to play in the<lb />
streets said Cain. "There's a<lb />
great street-music scene in<lb />
Europe. People seem to like that<lb />
over there<lb />
Both musicians plan to spend a<lb />
lot of time composing and<lb />
redefining their sound. But Penn-<lb />
ington believes they will find an<lb />
audience and succeed, because<lb />
Europeans respond to music like<lb />
any other people. "It's f6lk<lb />
music, basically, because, when<lb />
you get down to it, that's what<lb />
you have to write about peo-<lb />
ple<lb />
"I want to be true to music. I<lb />
want to be liked. I want to enjoy<lb />
it most of all said Pennington.<lb />
Perhaps Europe will be the<lb />
place for Pennington and Cain to<lb />
realize their ambitions. Mean-<lb />
while, the group will be playing<lb />
their final performance tomor-<lb />
row night at the New Deli. Open-<lb />
ing for them will be Denouement,<lb />
a keyboard-oriented new music<lb />
act. Come out Thursday and bid<lb />
Dirty Little Secrets bon voyage<lb />
and luck with their future plans.<lb />

JOHN SHANNON<lb />
Marcello Barbieri's new<lb />
semantic principles of life have<lb />
two important characteristics:<lb />
one, an important frontier has<lb />
been established; two, the<lb />
elucidation of these principles is<lb />
clear and concise. An expert<lb />
biochemist, Barbieri entertain-<lb />
ingly enlightens those willing to<lb />
pursue an understanding of life's<lb />
continuity from Big Bang to cur-<lb />
rent day.<lb />
The Semantic Theory of Life<lb />
delves into this most mysterious<lb />
event, the beginnings of life. Bar-<lb />
bieri's arguments, as Rene<lb />
Thorn's preface attests, "concen-<lb />
trate on bio-chemistry, which his<lb />
discription renders intelligible<lb />
and almost enjoyable no mean<lb />
feat<lb />
Arguably, the book contains<lb />
professional material establishing<lb />
its scholarly importance. Never-<lb />
theless, Barbieri is extremely<lb />
careful to connect with the scien-<lb />
tific novice.<lb />
Aristotle's Great Chain of Be-<lb />
ing implies continuity in the chain<lb />
of life. Yet, current evolutionary<lb />
theory inadequately explains the<lb />
origin of life from primordial<lb />
biochemical building blocks.<lb />
Life uses sophisticated organic<lb />
processes. These efficient pro-<lb />
cesses out-perform current<lb />
echnological abilities. How,<lb />
then, were these complex struc-<lb />
tural organizations assembled in<lb />
a simple chemical bath?<lb />
Barbieri's genius involves<lb />
detecting the semantic element in<lb />
nature's fundamental syntax.<lb />
Life's beginnings can't be<lb />
delineated; animate matter is on-<lb />
ly the visible product of gradual<lb />
physical effects.<lb />
Barbieri spans the chasm by ex-<lb />
plaining the transformation of<lb />
common organic units into the<lb />
diversity of life.<lb />
His judicious display of con-<lb />
temporary thought illuminates<lb />
the intellectual synthesis Barbieri<lb />
has achieved. The puzzle pieces<lb />
displayed, rearranged and jux-<lb />
taposed lead the reader naturally<lb />
to conclude, as Barbieri has, that<lb />
early life evolved from simple<lb />
ribosomal entities.<lb />
Stanley Miller in 1953 created a<lb />
synthetic primordial soup. Its in-<lb />
gredients represent the basic<lb />
organic compounds necessary to<lb />
construct and maintain life. In-<lb />
cluded were amino-acids, consti-<lb />
tuents of proteins and nucleic<lb />
acids, the basic units of<lb />
ribonucleic acid (RNA) and de-<lb />
oxy ribonucleic acid (DNA).<lb />
Barbieri maintains cellular life<lb />
is a trinity, three compounds<lb />
which self-assemble and inter-<lb />
act: RNA, DNA and proteins.<lb />
Proteins effect metabolism in all<lb />
cellular life; DNA stores<lb />
hereditary information for pro-<lb />
tein synthesis and RNA is the in-<lb />
terface.<lb />
Ribosomes are the kernal of<lb />
life. Utilizing the four unique<lb />
properties (polymerization, self-<lb />
assembly, polymorphism and<lb />
self-amalgamation), they are<lb />
responsible for all the basic diver-<lb />
sities of life. Constructed of pro-<lb />
teins and RNA, these chemical<lb />
factories control all cellular<lb />
metabolism.<lb />
Teetering on the edge between<lb />
inanimate factories and function-<lb />
ing biological units, Ribosomes<lb />
constitute the continuum which<lb />
must exist.<lb />
Barbieri's radical departure<lb />
from current theory has resolved<lb />
several biological mysteries.<lb />
Three esoteric issues addressed in<lb />
this book the preellular split<lb />
of prokaryotes and micro-<lb />
eukaryotes; the relation of<lb />
ribosomal molecular weights to<lb />
nucleoli creation; and the dif-<lb />
ference in prokaryotic and<lb />
eukaryotic DNA manipulation <lb />
represent cutting-edge inquiries<lb />
into modern bio-chemical theory.<lb />
Possibly the most important<lb />
revelation is the refutation of<lb />
natural selection as the leading<lb />
dogma of evolutionary science.<lb />
Natural conventions, exemplified<lb />
by life's use of right-handed<lb />
sugars over left-handed sugars,<lb />
are the fundamental modifiers of<lb />
biological activity. Natural<lb />
cycles, created by these conven-<lb />
tions, supersede the secondary ef-<lb />
fects of natural selection.<lb />
The final chapter translates<lb />
biochemical evolution into<lb />
linguistic evolution. "Life is the<lb />
language Nature learned to<lb />
speak Barbieri is intrigued<lb />
by this duality.<lb />
Syntax and semantics, physical<lb />
law and natural conventions <lb />
his mind fuses the two in a grand<lb />
intellectual experiment.<lb />
Barbieri's language is poignant;<lb />
the momentous import of his<lb />
ideas is easily belied by his suc-<lb />

Henry Preparing For Final Season<lb />
By JANET SIMPSON<lb />
SpurU Wrilrr<lb />
It has been said that all things<lb />
have their own time and place.<lb />
Well, now is the time that most<lb />
college students can be found on<lb />
the beach. School is the last thing<lb />
on their minds and the closes!<lb />
they've gotten to a hook is walk-<lb />
ing past the mall bookstore. Yes,<lb />
this is the life; the sand, the surt,<lb />
and the sun.<lb />
However, not quite everyone is<lb />
taking it easy on the water's edge.<lb />
A dedicated tew are even gracing<lb />
ECU's campus by attending sum-<lb />
mer school. One of these tew is<lb />
Marchell Henry.<lb />
Henry is giving up his fun in<lb />
the sun days for academic<lb />
reasons as well as athletic ones.<lb />
"1 have a couple of reasons tor<lb />
being in summer school stated<lb />
Henry. "I'm here to pick up<lb />
credits towards graduation, as<lb />
well as to work on basketball<lb />
Henry, who is one of si<lb />
seniors on the team this season, is<lb />
really keeping busy. Monday thru<lb />
Friday is always the same<lb />
seven hours ol class and an al<lb />
noon work-oul consisting of an<lb />
hour and a half at the ECU<lb />
Strength Complex lifting weights.<lb />
and an hour and a half a: Minges<lb />
playing basketball<lb />
"I'm working a lot<lb />
dividual pans oi my game<lb />
stated Henry. "Everydav I take<lb />
about 200 jump shots from dif-<lb />
ferent areas on the floor and I<lb />
work a lot on my inside moves<lb />
Lifting weights is something<lb />
Henry definitely believes in. "It's<lb />
kind of difficult at 6-5 to play<lb />
power forward if you're not<lb />
strong noted Henry. "Last<lb />
season I was able to get shots off<lb />
inside that were difficult the year<lb />
before, but I still feel I'm not<lb />
strong enough to play the posi-<lb />
tion I play.<lb />
"This was evident in certain<lb />
situations Henrv continued.<lb />
against one who may be bigger<lb />
than he, if he's playing power<lb />
forward.<lb />
When asked who would play<lb />
the power forward position if he<lb />
were moved, Henry couldn't give<lb />
a specific answer.<lb />
"It's going to be tough to<lb />
decide who will play that posi-<lb />
tion offered Henry. "It's really<lb />
hard to say, as well as to early to<lb />
say. Hopefully I will be, as I said,<lb />
at the small forward<lb />
Henry feels chemistry will be a<lb />
major factor in the team's success<lb />
4 77w working a lot on the individual parts of my<lb />

"For instance, the games against<lb />
Duke and Kentucky. Also against<lb />
Navy my shooting percentage<lb />
was horrendous. Hopefully this<lb />
vear I'll move to the small for-<lb />
ward position<lb />
Fhe position oi' small forward<lb />
ler than powei forward is<lb />
definitely more suited to Henry.<lb />
His size, speed, and strength<lb />
would be more effective there (at<lb />
small forward). He could take<lb />
advantag oi a smaller, slower<lb />
man. rather than having to go up<lb />
in the upcoming season. "I agree<lb />
with an earlier comment by<lb />
Coach Harrison: 'that we can be<lb />
very good if the chemistry is<lb />
there Henry stated. "I think<lb />
that it is very important that we<lb />
come together early. Once our<lb />
roles are accepted and we play in-<lb />
to those roles, we will be a pretty-<lb />
good team<lb />
Leon Bass, Keith Sledge, and<lb />
Henry are going to make up the<lb />
base that the 1986-87 Pirates will<lb />
be built upon. The three of them<lb />
are seniors, as well as being the<lb />
only returning starters<lb />
"I do think Leon, Keith, and<lb />
myself are going to be counted on<lb />
heavily for leadership, along with<lb />
the other seniors Henry ex<lb />
plained. "But considering we are<lb />
the only returning starters, 1<lb />
think there will be a lot put on<lb />
our shoulders<lb />
Henry feels he may even have<lb />
more responsibility where leader<lb />
ship goes. "I like the idea of hav-<lb />
ing the responsibility of being a<lb />
leader said Henry "I am a<lb />
returning captain and I feel I<lb />
should have more responsibilities<lb />
as far as leadership is<lb />
concerned<lb />
Being a team leader last year<lb />
can only help Henry be a better<lb />
one this year. "At the beginning<lb />
o last year I think my major pro-<lb />
blem was that I was trying to lead<lb />
more verbally than by example<lb />
explained Henrv. "By the end of<lb />
the season, 1 was leading by ex-<lb />
ample rather than by wrds <lb />
and my teammates were ;es;<lb />

over into the upcoming season<lb />
Bass, Sledge, and the rest ol<lb />
the returning players will be<lb />
counted on even mon ear.<lb />
according to Henry.<lb />
"We're going to have to count<lb />
on Leon this year, m<lb />
we did last vear he said. "I<lb />
think Leon has to believe<lb />
himself. Coach Harrison has<lb />
that Leon can be as good a'<lb />
wants to be. and I believe thi<lb />
think it's up to Leon to realize<lb />
that this is his last year and I<lb />
he has the potential to be a I<lb />
good player. All he has to d<lb />

Sledge's move from smal<lb />

Healthy Future For Young League<lb />
David Robinson (50), returns for his senior year at Navy. Robinson<lb />
was the leading shot blocker in the nation last year.<lb />
The Colonial Athletic Associa-<lb />
tion has recently completed its<lb />
first year of existence. The eight-<lb />
school league formerly known as<lb />
the ECAC-South, left the ECAC<lb />
last May to form the CAA, an in-<lb />
dependent conference organiza-<lb />
tion.<lb />
In the year since then, they've<lb />
hired their first commissioner,<lb />
former NCAA investigator Tom<lb />
Yeager, and first head of of-<lb />
ficials, Dan Woolridge, a former<lb />
ACC official.<lb />
In the short year since that<lb />
June 6, 1985 resolution that set<lb />
the Colonial apart from the<lb />
ECAC, a lot has been ac-<lb />
complished. The conference has<lb />
been awarded several automatic<lb />
berths into NCAA play, such as<lb />
in men's basketball, baseball and<lb />
soccer. It has set up a central of-<lb />
fice and has crowned 12 cham-<lb />
pions.<lb />
"We've had some significant<lb />
accomplishments both through<lb />
hard work and a little luck<lb />
Yeager said. "Getting an<lb />
automatic bid (in basketball) is a<lb />
paramount objective for any con-<lb />
ference, certainly a new one. It<lb />
establishes your identity with<lb />
other conferences gives you a<lb />
measure of respectibility, and<lb />
gives your teams incentive.<lb />
"The basketball bid was our<lb />
main objective from day one<lb />
Yeager continued "Receiving it<lb />
was the payoff to a lot of hard<lb />
work by the leagues athletic<lb />
directors. It was a big boost to<lb />
our credibility<lb />
Not only did the league get an<lb />
automatic bid into the NCAA<lb />
tournament, filled by the U.S.<lb />
Naval Academy and premier<lb />
player David Robinson but the<lb />
league also had runner-up Rich-<lb />

was chosen for the National In-<lb />
vitational Tournament.<lb />
The Midshipmen defeated<lb />
Tulsa, Syracuse and Cleveland<lb />

marked the sixth time in a row<lb />

Richmond fell to Atlantic-10<lb />
champ St. Joseph in a one-point-<lb />
game in the opening round while<lb />
George Mason downed Lamar<lb />

"We were happy knowing in<lb />

and a tougher schedule, the<lb />
women went 4-9 in the spring for<lb />
a overall record of 11-11.<lb />
Both the men's and women's<lb />
teams are coached by Pat Sher-<lb />
man, and she felt the mjuns<lb />
played an important part in the<lb />
team's spring slide.<lb />
"We had problems with<lb />
chronic injuries all season<lb />
Sherman said. "We lost Ann<lb />
Manderfield for one-and-a-half<lb />
months, which forced our other<lb />
players into different positions as<lb />
well as costing us our number-<lb />
one player<lb />
Indeed, the loss of Manderfield<lb />
was costly, as it came in the Lady<lb />
Pirates' first match of the spring<lb />
against Campbell.<lb />
Among the standouts for the<lb />
women in last spring's dual team<lb />
matches for the women were:<lb />
Becky Clements (8-1), Lisa<lb />
Eichholz (7-2), Holly Murray<lb />
(8-0) and Susan Montjoy (6-3).<lb />
In doubles, Manderfield and<lb />
Eichholz had a near perfect 7-1<lb />
record, while Montjoy and<lb />
Clements weie 5-1.<lb />
In the women's CAA tourney,<lb />
Mandefield came away with a<lb />
third-place finish at the number-<lb />
one singles. In team standings.<lb />
ECU finished well behind the top<lb />
three teams, (William A Mary,<lb />
James Madison and Richmond)<lb />
but was only one-and-a-hall<lb />
points behind fourth-place<lb />
American.<lb />
The men's improvement from<lb />
fall to spring was impressive con-<lb />
sidering the fact thev lost two o!<lb />
their top six players in the in-<lb />
terim.<lb />
"We lost two of our top six<lb />
players, as well as suffering in-<lb />
juries Sherman said. "I was<lb />
very pleased with the perfor-<lb />
mance, especially the non-top six<lb />
players, to compete well<lb />
One player who did not see ac-<lb />
tion last fall had the best winning<lb />
percentage on the team in spring<lb />
singles play. Todd Sumner went<lb />
7-2 for the spring for the best<lb />
record of the season, despite not<lb />
playing in the fall.<lb />
The highest finisher for the<lb />
men in the CAA tourney was<lb />
John Melhorn, who finished the<lb />
year with a 20-14 record on the<lb />
year.<lb />
Sherman was pleased with the<lb />
play of both teams, especially<lb />
considering the injuries.<lb />
"1 think considering all of the<lb />
injuries, both teams did a good<lb />
job Sherman said. "Although<lb />
we didn't pull off any major<lb />
upsets we didn't lose to anyone<lb />
we shouldn't lose to<lb />
One change in the schedu.e tor<lb />
next year is that both the men's<lb />
and women's conference toui-<lb />
naments will be played in the spr-<lb />
ing. In the past, the men played<lb />
their tournament in the fall.<lb />
We're really happy to be play-<lb />
ing both our tournaments in the<lb />
spring Sherman said. "This is<lb />
something we've wanted for a<lb />
long time now<lb />
The future looks bright for<lb />
both the men's and women's<lb />
teams, as the majority ot the key<lb />
performers return for both<lb />
teams.<lb />
lor the men, John -nthonv<lb />
was the only key loss to gradua-<lb />
tion as junior Pat Campanaro.<lb />
seniors Dan LaMont and dreg<lb />

Daugherty Top Choice In NBA Draft<lb />
By RICK McCORMAC<lb />
And<lb />
SCOTT COOPER<lb />
Md I PI Vlrr kriT<lb />
The heralded Atlantic Coast<lb />
Conference made it one. two,<lb />
hree in yesterda) 's NBA draft as<lb />
North Carolina's Brad Daugher-<lb />
y realized a dream when he top-<lb />
ped the draft lisl and headed to<lb />
he Cleveland Cavalie<lb />
He was joined in the first<lb />
ound by four other player' from<lb />
North Carolina schools. N.C.<lb />
State's center Chris Washburn,<lb />
vho gave up his remaining two<lb />
vears of college eligibilitv to go<lb />
pro, was the third player selected<lb />
n the draft, going to the Golden<lb />
State Warriors.<lb />
Guard Johnny Daw kins ot"<lb />
Duke headed to San Antonio on<lb />
he 10th pick overall, and Blue<lb />
Devil teammate Mark Alarie was<lb />
picked No. 18 by the Denver<lb />
Nuggets.<lb />
Two other players chosen in<lb />
he first round from the ACC in-<lb />
clude Maryland's No. 2 pick Len<lb />
Bias (Boston Celtics) and Georgia<lb />
Tech's John Salley, who was the<lb />
: 1th pick, went to the Detroit<lb />
"istons.<lb />
"It's a childhood dream of<lb />
nine to play a pro sport<lb />
Daugherty said. "When you go<lb />
hrough college, it sticks in your<lb />
mind as a goalto be the number<lb />
me pick<lb />
Cleveland presented Daugherty<lb />
vith a No. 55 Cavaliers jersey<lb />
lust after his selection.<lb />
Daugherty, who entered North<lb />
Carolina at the age of 16, is con-<lb />
.idered by many scouts to be the<lb />
draft's most versatile player. The<lb />
footer played center for the<lb />
Tarheels but is projected as a<lb />
power forward in the NBA.<lb />
"I'm delighted Brad has been<lb />
selected number one in the NBA<lb />
draft said Tarheel head coach<lb />
Dean Smith. "Fortunately, he<lb />
moves well and can plav forward<lb />
in addition to playing center. He<lb />
does have fine offensive skills,<lb />
great hands and a work ethic<lb />
towards defense that will help<lb />
him<lb />
Daugherty averaged 20.2<lb />
points and 9.0 rebounds a game<lb />
during his senior year. He was<lb />
seventh on the Tarheel all-lime<lb />
scoring list and was the school's<lb />
fourth-leading rebounder. He<lb />
was their mosi accurate shooter,<lb />
hitting 61.0 percent of his shois<lb />
from the field.<lb />
"I'm confident he will con-<lb />
tinue ihe rapid improvement he<lb />
made each year he was here and<lb />
go on to become an outstanding<lb />
NBA player Smith said. "He's<lb />
very fundamentally sound, and 1<lb />
feel confident his transition to<lb />
professional basketball will be<lb />
relatively smooth<lb />
To get the top pick and the<lb />
right to choose Daugherty, the<lb />
Cavaliers sent forward Roy Hin-<lb />
son to Philadelphia.<lb />
Washburn, a 6-11 powerhouse<lb />
from Hickory, N.C, averaged<lb />
16 points and 6 rebounds for<lb />
the Wolfpack last season.<lb />
Forward Alarie said he was<lb />
chosen by his team ot preference<lb />
in his round ot preference.<lb />
"My first choice was to go to<lb />
Denver the Scotsdale. A<lb />
native Alarie said. "There wasn't<lb />
much chance 1 would be picked<lb />
earlier, and Denver seemed to be<lb />
the best situation for me. My<lb />
stvle of play and the fact that I'm<lb />
the product of a great program at<lb />
Duke make me very suited to<lb />
playing for Denver<lb />
Blue Devil coach Mike<lb />
Krzyzewski said: "To have two<lb />
first-round picks is just tremen-<lb />
dous. When something really<lb />
good happens to people from<lb />
your own family, you feel good<lb />
For a younger Juke player,<lb />
seeing two of his teammates nab-<lb />
bed in the first round was an in-<lb />
spiration.<lb />
"I think anybody who plays<lb />
the game of basketball has the<lb />
dream of making il in the NBA<lb />
said sophomore forward guard<lb />
Billy King. "That's the highest<lb />
level of achievement. In my deal-<lb />
ings, it makes me want to worn<lb />
even harder. It gives me<lb />
something to measure my ability<lb />
and waht it takes to make it at<lb />
that level<lb />
Two Wolfpack players saw<lb />
second-round action. Guard Nate<lb />
McMillan headed to Seattle on<lb />
the 30th pick and forward Par<lb />
ragigtis "Pano" Fasoulas headed<lb />
to Portland on the 37th selection.<lb />
In third-round selections,<lb />
Duke guard David Henderson is<lb />
headed to Washington on the<lb />
58th pick.<lb />
Two Tarheels were nabbed in<lb />
fourth-round picks. Center War-<lb />
ren Martin was selected No. 73 by<lb />
Cleveland and guard Steve Hale<lb />
headed to New Jersey on the 81st-<lb />
