WZMB TemporarilySignsOff<lb />
By BETH WHICKER<lb />
ECU'S campus radio station<lb />
VAMB was temporarily shut<lb />
down Kir nearly an hour May 1<lb />
after a student disc jockey used<lb />
exploitive language during the<lb />
stations "permanent wave" pro-<lb />
gram.<lb />
At approximately 10 p.m. the<lb />
disc jockey, a junior majoring in<lb />
communications, was asked by<lb />
the station's chief engineer to<lb />
play the sign off tape and leave<lb />
the station.<lb />
The situation was brought to<lb />
the attention of the ECU Public<lb />
Safety Department by a concern-<lb />
ed citizen who had heard the<lb />
broadcast. The officer on duty<lb />
alerted WMB's chief engineer.<lb />
Both ECU Public Safety Of-<lb />
ficers and VYZMB's chief<lb />
engineer approached the disc<lb />
jockey and corrected the situa-<lb />
tion. No force had to be im-<lb />
plemented to remove the disc<lb />
jockey from the station.<lb />
At nearly 11 p.m. the station<lb />
was signed back on the air b<lb />
newly appointed General<lb />
Manager Jeff Chester. Chester<lb />
issued a formal apology to<lb />
WZMB's listners and the 11 p.m.<lb />
disc jockey finished out the re-<lb />
mainder of the evening.<lb />
Chester also gave two formal<lb />
apologies the following day dur-<lb />
ing the station's regular news<lb />
broadcast.<lb />
According to Chester, the stu-<lb />
dent disc jockey acted entirely on<lb />
his own without any authoriza-<lb />
tion from station management or<lb />
the university. The remarks of<lb />
the student do not reflect the<lb />
iews of WZMB or ECL<lb />
"The incident caused great<lb />
concern, the WZMB advisory<lb />
board needs to meet and clarify<lb />
their standards in regard to the<lb />
"permanent wave" program<lb />
said Elmer Meyer, vice chancellor<lb />
for Student Life.<lb />
According to Chester he has<lb />
rewritten several policies, and<lb />
designed new policies to clarify<lb />
the rules concerning station pro-<lb />
gramming.<lb />
Chester's new policies have<lb />
been approved by the Media<lb />
Board.<lb />
"We at the station are taking<lb />
steps to see that this type of inci-<lb />
dent does not happen again<lb />
said Chester.<lb />
According to Chester, the stu-<lb />
dent disc jockey will be punished<lb />
for his actions as the station has<lb />
pressed judiciary charges against<lb />
him.<lb />
"WZMB will not face any<lb />
charges from the FCC concerning<lb />
the incident said Chester.<lb />
Chester and the staff at<lb />
WZMB, do not know of an<lb />
reason for the disc jockey's ac-<lb />
tion, there is some speculation<lb />
that the student was not pleased<lb />
with the Media Board's selection<lb />
of WZMB's general manager.<lb />
The student disc jockey was a<lb />
candidate for the position which<lb />
the Media Board selected<lb />
Chester.<lb />

Summer Employment Found<lb />
By PATRICK ON KIL<lb />
staff Writer<lb />
Summer means vacations and<lb />
summer school for some<lb />
students, but for many others it<lb />
means going to work to help<lb />
defray or cover college expenses.<lb />
Job hunting is a difficult and<lb />
often frustrating task for these<lb />
students.<lb />
The availability of jobs is the<lb />
major problem, says Frankie<lb />
Becker of Manpower Temporary-<lb />
Services, Inc. The number of<lb />
people available for employment<lb />
in the summer dramatically in-<lb />
creases creating a smallet job<lb />
market, consequently many<lb />
students are unable to find work<lb />
Temporary service agencies<lb />
such as Manpower aid students in<lb />
finding summer work, which may<lb />
include industrial work, offwe<lb />
and secretarial work, or outdoor<lb />
work. These jobs pay according<lb />
to their job descriptions but may<lb />
last from one day to three mon-<lb />
ths, depending on the needs of<lb />
the employer.<lb />
The Cooperative Ed<lb />
program offered by the un<lb />
also assists students in finding<lb />
career oner,red work.<lb />
This program al t er i<lb />
semesters of work will<lb />

President Stalls Veto<lb />
WASHINGTON (LPI) Presi-<lb />

time, is wailing to see if he has<lb />
won any support before deciding<lb />
whether to veto congressional re-<lb />
jection of an arms sale to Saudi<lb />
Arabia today or wait until mid-<lb />
night Wednesday.<lb />
Senate Republican leader<lb />
Robert Dole suggested Monday<lb />
that Reagan wait until the<lb />
deadline Wednesday night, argu-<lb />
ing that a last minute signing<lb />
would delay a final showdown<lb />
over the $354 million missile<lb />
package until Congress returns<lb />
from its Memorial Day recess.<lb />
With more time, Reagan may-<lb />
be able to reach more senators in<lb />
lobbying for approval of the sale<lb />
the administration considers vital<lb />
to U.S. interests in the Middle<lb />
East.<lb />
The resolution to bar the<lb />
missile sale passed the House by a<lb />
vote of 356 to 62 and the Senate<lb />
by a vote of 73 to 22, both well in<lb />
excess of the two-thirds ma-<lb />
jorities needed to override a veto<lb />
by Reagan and kill the deal.<lb />

RAEFORD, NC. (UPI) - At<lb />

Monday when severe<lb />
thunderstorms spawned one tor-<lb />
nado, destroying mobile homes<lb />
and leaving residents without<lb />

1984 by killer twisters.<lb />

One advantage to this pro-<lb />
gram, stated Betsy Harper, the<lb />
director of ECU's Cooperative<lb />
Education program, is that after<lb />
two years a student gains one<lb />
year of college education and one<lb />
year of practical experience in<lb />
their respective field.<lb />
The most rewarding benefit,<lb />
she stated, is that most co-op<lb />
students receive job offers before<lb />
graduation.<lb />
Most students are not aware of<lb />
what opportunities are available<lb />
for them, but there exists many<lb />
avenues to help them. The<lb />
newspaper advertises job oppor-<lb />
tunities available to the public.<lb />
Teachers, friends, and parents<lb />
may also have contacts who are<lb />
in need of employees.<lb />
Many students believe that<lb />
businesses will not hire them, but<lb />
the opposite is true. If a<lb />
businessperson notices someone<lb />
working hard trying to find a job,<lb />
he or she may be impressed with<lb />
their motivation and determina-<lb />
tion.<lb />

minor injuries were transported<lb />
to Cape Fear Valley Medicai<lb />
Center in Fayetteville, about 20<lb />
miles northeast of Raeford.<lb />
Nivens said the four were at a<lb />
mobile home park on N.C. 211<lb />
when the twister struck.<lb />
A hospital spokesman said the<lb />
three children and one adult at<lb />
the medical center's emergency<lb />
room suffered mostly cuts and<lb />
bruises. A fifth person also was<lb />
reported injured but refuse;<lb />

taking steroids?<lb />
Anabolic steroids are hor-<lb />
mones that resemble testosterone<lb />
which accelerates growth in<lb />
tissues upon which it acts.<lb />
Although testosterone is not con-<lb />
sidered a pure anabolic steroid, it<lb />
is being used more frequently b<lb />
athletes due to its potent anabolic<lb />
effects and the difficult) ol detec-<lb />

? Hank's uses a custom built ice cream machine to make its delicious desserts. Modern ice cream machines turn the dasher too<lb />
quickly which puts a lot of air in the ice cream. Many of the ice creams you buy are half air. We had our ice cream freezer<lb />
Ij specially built to turn the dasher at the speed of the old fashioned hand-cranked freezers so we can get the same rich pure<lb />
tl flavors.<lb />
? A speciality at Hank's is the BLEND-IN. You pick your favonte ice cream flavor, and your favonte fruit or candy and then<lb />
we put them in our special blend-in machine and combine them into your own personal flavor The blend-in machine breaks up<lb />
J the candy or fruit into small pieces and mixes it into the ice cream. It tastes great because the candy or frui' doesn't get frozen<lb />

Scruples<lb />
Where Do You Keep Yours?<lb />
Scruples. Have you ever<lb />
wondered about them? Of course<lb />
not, you're a college student. You<lb />
hae more important things to<lb />
worry about, like how to finagle<lb />
yourself a free Domino's pizza.<lb />
Stop a minute and think about,it.<lb />
Are the scruples you exercise at<lb />
school the same as those you use on<lb />
the home front?<lb />
Hell no!<lb />
Would you hang out your<lb />
bedroom window at home yelling at<lb />
the passing women while rating<lb />
them with olympic-style score<lb />
cards? Probably not.<lb />
Would you attempt the world's<lb />
beer bong consumption record with<lb />
your parents looking on? Hardlv<lb />
likely.<lb />
Hov about those frank sexual<lb />
discussions with your friends. You<lb />
know, the ones that go like this:<lb />
'Yeah we (censored). Then 1 (even<lb />
more censored). And 1 have pic-<lb />
tures, too Would you attempt<lb />
such a conversation with good ol'<lb />
Worn an' Dad? Not unless you have<lb />
a death wish.<lb />
So what happens to our scruples<lb />
when we leave the nest? I have a<lb />
theory. You see. 1 believe college<lb />
students store their scruples in an<lb />
old shoe box and hide them away in<lb />
the back of their bedroom closets.<lb />
Don't laugh. I'm serious.<lb />
Think about what it's like to<lb />
return home after just two months<lb />
al school. You get home and right<lb />
awa you reach for your hidden<lb />
shoe box. Quickly, you slip into<lb />
your scruples, only to find they<lb />
don't fit like they used to.<lb />
For instance, when Dad proudly<lb />
pats you on the back and hands you<lb />
a Bud, instead of saying thank you,<lb />
you find yourself reaching for the<lb />
beer bong.<lb />
And how about this scenario?<lb />
You sit down for a heart warming<lb />
talk with Mom. Much to your sur-<lb />
prise, you finds your vocabulary has<lb />
deteriorated and you must struggle<lb />
to refrain from punctuating your<lb />

Chernobyl Disaster Is Irrelevant<lb />
To The Stars Or Bust!<lb />
The American space program is<lb />
still in its infancy, and like any in-<lb />
fant, it should be treated with<lb />
understanding. The Challenger ex-<lb />
plosion was tragic and the Delta<lb />
rocket mishap unfortunate. The<lb />
unending barrage of criticism that<lb />
NASA has received, however, is in-<lb />
excusable.<lb />
Since the Challenger disaster, the<lb />
Presidential Panel of inquiry has<lb />
been investigating, and the shuttles<lb />
Columbia, Atlantis, and Discovery<lb />
have been grounded, as well they<lb />
should be. These are simplv nec-<lb />
cessary steps on NASA's road to<lb />
recovery.<lb />
Unfortunately, there are a few<lb />
gentlemen in Washington who<lb />
would like to see them grounded in-<lb />
definately. They're a trifle miffed at<lb />
having millions of dollars burn up<lb />
in the atmosphere, not to mention<lb />
seven Americans as well. This is<lb />
understandable. On the other hand,<lb />
giving serious consideration to<lb />
replacing maned space flights with<lb />
unmaned flights is a little tougher to<lb />
swallow.<lb />
Sending robots into space instead<lb />

Q. In connection with the Soviet<lb />
fiasco-tragedy at Chernobyl, we hear a<lb />
lot about "containments What is a<lb />
"containment and why such an<lb />
awkward word?<lb />
A. To the second question, there is<lb />
no answer. It's like complaining about<lb />
the word "discussant" to designate an<lb />
academic participant who analyzes a<lb />
paper. But the word has a technical<lb />
meaning. A containment is a reinforced<lb />
On The Right<lb />

concrete structure whose purpose is to<lb />
contain all but trivial radiation leaks in<lb />
the event of an accident in nuclear<lb />
power plants.<lb />
Q. Isn't it true that there are<lb />
American nuclear plants that, like<lb />
Chernobyl, are without containments?<lb />
A. No. At least, no in the alarmest<lb />
sense in which you raise the question.<lb />
Containments are needed for protection<lb />
against nuclear plants of the kind that<lb />
can generate heat of a particular (i.e<lb />
dangerous) level. Those American<lb />
plants that do not have containments<lb />
are not engaged in generating that kind<lb />
of heat.<lb />
0- Sounds sophistical to me.<lb />
A. Listen, if you want to take the<lb />
position that because the Soviet Union<lb />
had a nuclear power accident, the<lb />
United States should discontinue<lb />
nuclear energy, go ahead and take that<lb />
position, but please stop asking me<lb />
questions, because I know what I'm<lb />
talking about and you probably don't,<lb />
so if you aren't in the mood to learn,<lb />
just go away.<lb />
Q. What are your credentials, Mr.<lb />
Know-It-All?<lb />
A. I read reports from non-<lb />
ideologized sources. For instance, here<lb />
is something that appeared in a book,<lb />
The War Against the Atom, in 1982, by<lb />
Samuel McCracken of Boston Universi-<lb />
ty. He wrote: "The absence of an anti-<lb />
nuclear movement in the Soviet Union<lb />
was (attributed) to the superior safety<lb />
of the People's reactors. What was<lb />
not generally reported was that most<lb />
Soviet reactors have no containments.<lb />
Had a Three Mile Island-tvpe accident<lb />
happened at one of these uncontained<lb />
reactors, there would almost certainlv<lb />
have been very serious releases of<lb />
radioactivity<lb />
Q. Are you saying that the lack of<lb />
containments in Chernobyl poses<lb />
special problems that we in the United<lb />
States don't need to worry about0<lb />
A. In a way, yes. Where we do not<lb />
have containments, we are not in the<lb />
business of producing the high-heat<lb />
nuclear energy made dangerous by the<lb />
lack of containments. Brace yourselt,<lb />
and let me use scientific lingo. Cher-<lb />
nobyl and her sisters are, as Dr. Mc-<lb />

contained reactors: they are uncontain-<lb />
ed, water-cooled, graphite-moderated<lb />

Q. So?<lb />
A. So, what happens in such un-<lb />
protected nuclear mechanisms is that<lb />
they tend to develop hot spots (the<lb />
scientists call them "Wigner energy")<lb />
within their core. When that happens,<lb />
you need to cool them, and this requires<lb />
very delicate manipulations. Mc-<lb />
Cracken reminds us that graphite burns<lb />
at temperatures sufficient to dissociate<lb />
the oxygen and hydrogen in water, and<lb />
this produces an explosive mixture of<lb />

The New Republic<lb />
Jan Kemp, an instructor in Universi-<lb />
ty of Georgia's remedial education pro-<lb />
gram, was fired from her job in 1982<lb />
because she refused to give preferential<lb />
treatment to athletes. Kemp sued, and<lb />
over the course of the trial which she<lb />
eventually won an astonishing,<lb />
though not atypical, picture of the ex-<lb />
ploitation of college athletes emerged.<lb />
Perhaps as few as 15 of the 20 blacks<lb />
who have played sports for Georgia<lb />
since the color line was broken in 1969<lb />
have graduated. Nine football players<lb />
flunking out of a remedial studies<lb />
course were mysteriously allowed into<lb />
the regular curriculum stream in order<lb />
to remain eligible for the 1981 Sugar<lb />
Bowl championship.<lb />
When Kemp refused to change the<lb />
failing grades of six "student athletes<lb />
another university official told her:<lb />
"Who do you think is more important<lb />
at this university, you or a very promi-<lb />
nent basketball player?"<lb />
The answer is obvious. Big-time<lb />
athletic competition is far more impor-<lb />
tant than education at many major<lb />
public universities, and nothing is likely<lb />
to change that.<lb />
Perhaps most disturbing is the way<lb />
college athletics systematically exploits<lb />
black youths. Memphis State Universi-<lb />
ty, for example, has earned much fame<lb />
and substantial television revenues for<lb />
its successful basketball teams, but in<lb />
the oast 12 years not a single one of its<lb />
many black players has graduated.<lb />
Nationwide the graduation rate for<lb />
black athletes is roughly 25 percent, and<lb />
three-quarters of those who do<lb />
graduate have physical education<lb />
degrees.<lb />
In the 1960s the universities used the<lb />
rhetoric of racial progress to justify<lb />
their treatment of black athletes. Offer-<lb />
ing scholarships to ghetto kids was bill-<lb />
ed as an enlightened form of affir-<lb />
mative action. But the dozens of recent<lb />
scandals have made it clear that the ma-<lb />
jor sports powers care little about<lb />
educating blacks.<lb />
At the University of Georgia, blacks<lb />
dominate the locker rooms, but make<lb />
up a tiny 4.5 percent of the student<lb />
population. In the Kemp trial everyone<lb />
stopped pretending. Hale Almond, an<lb />
attorney for the University of Georgia,<lb />
explained to the jurors: "We may not<lb />
make a university student (out of an<lb />
athlete). But if we can teach him to read<lb />
and write, maybe he can work at the<lb />
post office rather than as a garbage<lb />
man<lb />
The old liberal rhetoric of affirmative<lb />
action has been succeeded by the<lb />
Reagan-era rhetoric of education<lb />
reform. In January the 700 member<lb />
schools of the National Collegiate<lb />
Athletic Association adopted a<lb />
measure, known as Proposition 48, that<lb />
apparently would toughen admissions<lb />
standards for incoming student<lb />
athletes.<lb />
Under the old rules, athletes had to<lb />
have a mere 2.0 high school graduating<lb />
grade point average. Proposition 48<lb />
calls for a 2.0 average in 11 designated<lb />
"core" courses, and stipulates that<lb />
athletes score at least a combined 700<lb />
on the SAT.<lb />
The bill has its opponents, many of<lb />
them from predominantly black schools<lb />
who call it a form of "apartheid Jesse<lb />
Jackson, Benjamin Hooks of the<lb />
NAACP, and the National Association<lb />
for Equal Opportunity in Higher<lb />
Education have all at one time or<lb />
another pointed out that since the me-<lb />
dian SAT score for black male athletes<lb />
is below -00. Proposition<lb />
discriminates on the basis of race Bui<lb />
they are overwhelmed by the bill's s<lb />
porters, who have been loudlv con-<lb />
gratulating themselves on their conn<lb />
ment to "academic excellence<lb />
But it's no coincidence that the<lb />
strongest supporters of the new rule are<lb />
those colleges such as Georgia -<lb />
that have been most guilty cA<lb />
defrauding athletes of educations in<lb />
past. For these schools, Proposition 4f<lb />
is simply an opportunity to posture<lb />
about academic excellence without ac<lb />
tuallv having to take anv meaningfu<lb />
action.<lb />
Consider the academic standards that<lb />
Proposition 48 establishes. You score<lb />
400 points on the SAT simplv bv sign<lb />
ing your name. If you randomIv fill oul<lb />
the answer sheet, you can get a 460. A<lb />
700 SAT score hardly signifies a tough<lb />
stand in favor of acadmeic excellence ot<lb />
a stern warning to high schools and<lb />
elementary schools.<lb />
Proposition 48, at best, will require<lb />
that athletes be literate before entennf<lb />
college - radical by NCAA standards,<lb />
laughable by any other.<lb />
Moreover, Proposition 48 doesn't re-<lb />
quire that the colleges clean up their act<lb />
at all. The scandal is not only who gets<lb />
into college, but also what happens to<lb />
the student athletes once they're there.<lb />
Despite all the pubic preening about<lb />
"excellence the NCAA has three<lb />
times rejected a modest proposal that<lb />
would require student athletes to main-<lb />
tain a minimum GPA sufficient to<lb />
graduate with a C average.<lb />
As for the complaint that Proposi-<lb />

student's education costs, the<lb />

And the business community,<lb />
for the first time, became the<lb />
largest donor. As a group, cor-<lb />
porations gave $1.57 billion,<lb />
which was 23.8 percent more<lb />
than the previous year.<lb />
Many hope the increase signals<lb />
a trend in private support that<lb />
could allay the damage done to<lb />
college programs by recent<lb />
federal and state budget cuts.<lb />
"Business is responding (to<lb />

In all, private donations<lb />
covered about 6.6 percent of the<lb />

Private generosity hasn't been<lb />
that high since 1950, when gifts<lb />

Donations, moreover, rose at a<lb />

Computer companies, in par-<lb />

vestments. They often provide<lb />
computers to college students in<lb />
hopes they'll continue to buy<lb />
them in business and private life.<lb />
On the other hand, University<lb />
of Texas alumnus Robert Ded-<lb />
man recently donated $10 million<lb />
tor undergraduate liberal arts<lb />
s-holarships, describing it as a<lb />
"pump primer" to encourage<lb />
others to support the liberal arts<lb />
with no strings attached.<lb />
Alumni such as Dedman were<lb />
colleges' second-larges source of<lb />
gifts, donating $1.46 billion in<lb />
1984-85, compared with $1.3<lb />
billion in 1983-84. Non-alumni<lb />
individuals contributed $1.42<lb />

And non-corporate founda-<lb />

An Indian village site in Hyde<lb />

visited by English explorers in<lb />

by archaeologists from East<lb />
Carolina University.<lb />
With funding from the<lb />
America's 400th Anniversary-<lb />
Committee, archaeologist Paul<lb />
R. Green will continue the study<lb />
that discovered in 1985 the village<lb />
site near Lake Mattamuskeet.<lb />
The site conforms to early maps<lb />
and written accounts of the<lb />
village called Pomeiooc provided<lb />
by the English explorers from Sir<lb />
Walter Raleigh's expedition to<lb />
Roanoke Island.<lb />
Green says the site appears to<lb />
date to the late 16th century and<lb />
may well be the village of<lb />
Pomeiooc. "Test excavations at<lb />
the site last summer recovered a<lb />
variety of compelling evidence in<lb />

which supports this possibility<lb />
he said.<lb />
The village is best known and<lb />

(CPS) Commuter college<lb />
students often do not get their<lb />
fair share of federal aid money,<lb />
claims a new study commissioned<lb />
by the American Council on<lb />
E:ducation (ACE )<lb />
The aid sstem, education son<lb />
sultant Scott F. Miller found in<lb />
the ACE survev of 15,000<lb />
students, tends to punish com-<lb />
muter students because it doesn't<lb />
let them count ail their off-<lb />
campus living costs as expenses.<lb />
As a result, the students can't<lb />
get as much Pell Grant money as<lb />
they need, the studv concludes.<lb />
Most of the students affected<lb />
attend community colleges,<lb />
where officials estimate more<lb />
than 90 percent of the students<lb />
commute.<lb />
Miller traces the problem to the<lb />
late seventies, when college lob-<lb />
byists failed to get Congress<lb />
protect commuter students when<lb />
it adopted new formulas -<lb />
distributing financial aid.<lb />

"The big schools cleaned up<lb />
the grant market" b getting an<lb />

of the American Association of<lb />
Community and Junior Colleges.<lb />
Commuter students also gel<lb />
hurt because aid programs don't<lb />
consider the needs of "nontradi-<lb />
tional" students who may be<lb />
parents, older than 22 years or<lb />
hold part-time jobs. Miller savs.<lb />
"This is a new and emerging<lb />
population on college<lb />
campuses he observes.<lb />
Nevertheless, federal aid for-<lb />
mulas do not include childrearing<lb />
expenses in calculating how much<lb />
grant money students need<lb />
But the lower tuitions of the<lb />
two-year schools don't mean<lb />
commuter students can do<lb />
without aid money, savs Arthur<lb />
Cohen of the University of<lb />
California at Los Angeles.<lb />

and Thomas Hariot who were<lb />
among those commissioned bv<lb />
Sir Walter Raleigh to establish a<lb />

claimed for England in 1584.<lb />
After exploring the region,<lb />
Roanoke Island was chosed as<lb />
the site for a colony but two<lb />
subsequent settlement attempts<lb />
failed.<lb />
Green said the village site is<lb />
"largely intact" and that<lb />
preliminary excavation last year<lb />
revealed soil stains from post<lb />

taining shellfish, fish bones, tur-<lb />

An unusual "ditch" some two<lb />

Haines, owner of the Attic, says,<lb />
"The industry is going to change<lb />
dramatically. There's no doubt<lb />
about it<lb />
Hames is currently in the pro-<lb />
 1 gearing the Attic up for<lb />
u ge I he ttic became a<lb />
private club on May 1 and is now<lb />
serving wme and liquor in addi-<lb />
beer. You must be 18 or<lb />
Ider<lb />
he<lb />
member, and<lb />
memebership fees are $5.00.<lb />
The Attic has also been<lb />
physically renovated 1 mean<lb />
really renovated. Most people<lb />
think they're in the wrong place<lb />
when they walk and feel a nice,<lb />
soft carpet beneath their feet.<lb />
They know they're in the wrong<lb />
place when they head for the<lb />
foosball tables only to find a o<lb />
lounge area tilled with several<lb />
big, fluffy couches. (These<lb />
should be great for passing out<lb />
on). This area looks like it could<lb />
be somebody's living room ex-<lb />
cept that it's a lot nicer than most<lb />
people's living rooms.<lb />
Overhead, there v a low.<lb />
acoustically built ceiling with a<lb />
number of ceiling tans to keep<lb />
everybody cool. The acoustics in<lb />
the remodeled Attic are so good<lb />
that you can sit and carry on a<lb />
normal conversation even when a<lb />
band is playing.<lb />
As you near the stage area, the<lb />
Attic looks more its normal self.<lb />
I his part is nice because you can<lb />
get a taste of the old as well as the<lb />
new. The floors in this area are<lb />
Still wooden, so it' you have to<lb />
dtop a cigarette or a beer, you do<lb />
it up front!<lb />
Hames explained that the cost<lb />
of remodeling and turning the<lb />
Attic into a private club was<lb />
around $40,000. He also explain-<lb />
ed that there are more changes to<lb />
come, consisting mainly of for-<lb />
mal attractions rather than<lb />
physical ones.<lb />
Beginning in late August, there<lb />
will be some major format<lb />
changes. Haines is using a<lb />
"target marketing" approach in<lb />
an attempt to reach a diverse<lb />
clientele. There will be specific<lb />
nights for specific musical for-<lb />
mats; thus, there will be<lb />
something for everybody. Some<lb />
of these nights are already<lb />
undergoing trial runs for in-<lb />
stance, tonight is "Wine, Women<lb />
and Wednesday featuring<lb />
original music by Off Center and<lb />
Soul Train.<lb />
Haines added, "There will be a<lb />
lot more activity, most of which<lb />
will start in the fall. We want to<lb />
involve people on a more per-<lb />
sonal basis<lb />
Haines also explained that this<lb />
period is the "most frustrating,<lb />
apprehensive, and scariest time"<lb />
he has faced in the nearly fifteen<lb />
I. MUM HI Mimi lkiilul,i<lb />
This lounge area Is but one improvement made by the Attic recently. As a response to new drinking<lb />
age laws, the Attic has become a priate club and remodeled extensively. 18 ear olds and over are<lb />
eligible for memberships, which cost $5.<lb />
years the Attic has been open.<lb />
However, he is confident that the<lb />
solutions will overcome the pro-<lb />
blems.<lb />
But what about other night<lb />
clubs and bars in Greenville and<lb />
throughout the state? Many bars<lb />
in North Carolina are already<lb />
closing their doors they just<lb />
can't cope with the changes. It is<lb />
possible that the nightlife in<lb />
downtown Greenville can still<lb />
prosper, but many people are not<lb />
so sure. Mark Saieed of Rafters<lb />
thinks the new law will have some<lb />
negative repercussions. He said,<lb />
"I definitely think it will hurt<lb />
business Unlike the Attic,<lb />
where a great deal of the<lb />
customers are already 21. Rafters<lb />
serves many 18 to 20-year-olds.<lb />
Furthermore, many of the<lb />
night spots downtown are only<lb />
bars, whereas the Attic also in-<lb />
cludes an entertainment schedule<lb />
to draw larger crowds.<lb />
Thus, the battle will be a tough<lb />
one, both for the club owners and<lb />
the patrons, and it is something<lb />
that we will have to endure until<lb />
the provision is declared un-<lb />
constitutional or otherwise in-<lb />
valid.<lb />
As for students under 21 who<lb />
are considering fake I.Ds: make<lb />
'em good because bars will con-<lb />
fiscate them and turn them in to<lb />
the Alcohol Law Enforcement<lb />
(ALE) agency. This action could<lb />
cost you a fine andor the loss of<lb />
your license.<lb />

nurse and teacher for fifteen<lb />
years, decided to go into ice<lb />
cream because "it looked like a<lb />
good opportunity<lb />
She subsequently travelled a<lb />
good bit of the globe in search of<lb />
the best ice cream flavors. She<lb />
found them, but since ice cream<lb />
makers are naturally reluctant to<lb />
give up their recipes, "Hank"<lb />
created original recipes herself,<lb />
recipes which brought her ice<lb />
cream to the attention of the ice<lb />
cream world, according to<lb />
Boone.<lb />
"Less than a year after we<lb />
opened. Hank's was chosen by<lb />
the National Ice Cream Retailers<lb />
Association as one of the five<lb />
best ice creams of 1984 said<lb />
Boone, "specifically, our vanilla<lb />
and strawberry flavors. We were<lb />
chosen again in 1985. We were<lb />
featured on 'P.M. Magazine'<lb />
twice, and were featured in a<lb />
book published by Warner called<lb />
The ery Best of Ice C reams<lb />
"E.T. is our key to success<lb />
said Boone. "E.T. is what we call<lb />
our ice cream machine. It<lb />
duplicates the action of the old,<lb />
hand-cranked ice cream<lb />
makers which turn more slowly<lb />
and thus make creamier ice<lb />
cream.<lb />
Another feature unavailable<lb />
elsewhere is Hank's "blend in<lb />
Boone explains, "there is tradi-<lb />
tionally a problem with adding<lb />
ingredients to ice cream. The ice<lb />
cream has to stay frozen, but<lb />
other items, such as candy or<lb />
fruit, lose their flavor if they're<lb />
frozen also. At Hank's you can<lb />
choose from a variety of candies<lb />
or fruits and we'll blend them<lb />
with the ice cream right then, so<lb />
you can really create your own<lb />
flavors<lb />
As soon as a new freezer ar-<lb />
rives, Hank's will serve sorbets.<lb />
"Sorbets are pure fruit, no milk<lb />
products, mixed in the ET with<lb />
water and sugar Hank's has a<lb />
special frozen drink similar to the<lb />
sorbets which will be named in a<lb />
special contest when the freezer<lb />
arrives, and Hank's will have its<lb />
grand opening.<lb />
"1 was searching for a location<lb />
for the store in North Carolina<lb />
said Hank. "I drove into Green-<lb />
ville last August, on a hot, hot<lb />
day. I just liked it. It seemed<lb />
clean, a good university town.<lb />
And the townspeople seemed to<lb />
support ice cream<lb />
Anyone who's been in Green-<lb />
ville in the summer before has<lb />
seen what can happen to struggl-<lb />
ing new businesses they tend to<lb />
shrivel in the unrelenting blast of<lb />
the furnace. Time and the<lb />
weather will tell if Patricia<lb />
"Hank" Steele and Mary Jean<lb />
Boone have judged correctly, if<lb />
Greenville dreams of ice cream, if<lb />
students are ready to loosen up<lb />
and refresh themselves.<lb />
A selection from one of the<lb />
country's finest collections of<lb />
French paintings, that of The<lb />
Chrysler Museum in Norfolk,<lb />
 a will be presented in a major<lb />
exhibition at the North Carolina<lb />
Museum of Art. "French Pain-<lb />
tings from The Chrysler<lb />
Museum" is scheduled May 31 to<lb />
September 14.<lb />
The exhibition includes 45<lb />
works ranging from the early<lb />
17th century through the early<lb />
20th century, but is especially-<lb />
rich in works of the 19th century,<lb />
including Impressionist pain-<lb />
tings.<lb />
f he paintings were collected by<lb />
Walter P. Chrysler. Jr , son of<lb />
the automobile company founder<lb />
and one of the most astute<lb />
private collectors in America dur-<lb />
ing this century, according to Dr.<lb />
William J. Chiego, chief curator<lb />
of the North Carolina Museum<lb />
of Art, who has organized the ex-<lb />
hibition. In 1971, Chrysler began<lb />
giving his collection to the Nor-<lb />
folk Museum of Arts and<lb />
Sciences, which was subsequently<lb />
renamed for its benefactor.<lb />
The Chrysler Museum is cur-<lb />
rently renovating and expanding<lb />
its building, making it possible<lb />
for the French paintings to be<lb />
loaned for the exhibition for an<lb />
extended period of time. The ex-<lb />
hibition will also be shown at the<lb />
Birmingham Museum of Art in<lb />
Alabama.<lb />
Among the 17th and 18th cen-<lb />
tury masters represented in the<lb />
exhibition are La Tour, Chardin<lb />
and Boucher, whose "Pastorale:<lb />
The Vegetable Vendor" is con-<lb />
sidered one of his finest works in<lb />
the U.S.<lb />
The early 19th-century artists<lb />
represented include Gericault,<lb />
Delacroix and Corot. The great<lb />
academic painters are well<lb />
represented, from Ingres and<lb />
Gleyre to Gerome and<lb />
Bouguereau, as are the leading<lb />
painters of the Barbizon School,<lb />
including Millet and Rousseau.<lb />
Among the works by later<lb />
19th-century independents are a<lb />
notable group of early paintings<lb />
by Manet, Pissarro and Cezanne<lb />
and later works by Renoir,<lb />
Boudin, and Fantin-Latour. The<lb />
exhibition concludes with a ma-<lb />
jor group of post-Impressionist<lb />
and early modern works by<lb />
Degas, Gauguin, Matisse and<lb />
Braque.<lb />
The exhibition is accompanied<lb />
by a fully-illustrated catalogue,<lb />
written by Jefferson Harrison,<lb />
researcher at The Chrysler<lb />
Museum. Also available will be a<lb />
free gallery guide written by<lb />
Chiego with David Steel and Mit-<lb />
chell Kahan, curators at the<lb />
North Carolina Museum of Art.<lb />
The Raleigh showing of<lb />
"French Paintings from The<lb />
Chrysler Museum" is made<lb />
possible, in part, by the sponsor-<lb />
ship of North Carolina Chrysler-<lb />
Plymouth Dealers.<lb />
In conjunction with the exhibi-<lb />
tion, a lecture series on French<lb />
painting will be presented Thurs-<lb />
day evenings, June 5 to July 10.<lb />
Free films on French art will be<lb />
shown Sundays, July 27 and<lb />
August 3. Concerts of French<lb />
music are scheduled on Sundays,<lb />

The highlight of the concert<lb />
was when each member o the<lb />

his twenty minute composition,<lb />
which included past classics like<lb />
"Eruption "Cathedrals" and<lb />
"Mean Street The guitarist<lb />
even gave a heavy metal twist to<lb />
one of Beethoven's classics.<lb />
Sammy Hagar did a good job<lb />
with his guitar, but it was hard to<lb />
appreciate him after King Ed-<lb />

as his throne for the evening.<lb />
However, when Hagar climbed to<lb />

An excellent drum solo was<lb />
performed by Alex Van Halen.<lb />
At its pounding conclusion,<lb />
fireworks were set off to the<lb />

But the man of the hour was<lb />
bass guitarist Michael Anthony.<lb />
Some of us can't help but like a<lb />
man with a beard who likes to<lb />
chug Jack Daniels in front of<lb />
thousands of people. Anthony<lb />
rocked the crowd with his<lb />
thunderous base and his evil<lb />

Okay, okay, I know what<lb />

seems to be a great amount of<lb />

previous Van Halen concerts.<lb />
Near the end of the show,<lb />
Hagar walked out on the stage<lb />
wearing, of all things, a David<lb />

severely booed, Eddie and Mike<lb />
took care of business by ripping<lb />

By TONY BROWN<lb />
SporU Writer<lb />
The Pirates battled valiantly<lb />
through the loser's bracket of the<lb />
Colonial Athletic Association<lb />
tournament to reach the cham-<lb />
pionship game on Sunday, but<lb />
then fell one rally short of the ti-<lb />
tle in an 8-5 loss to the Richmond<lb />
Spiders.<lb />
The title match started off<lb />
good for ECU as the Pirates<lb />
smashed their way to a 5-0 lead in<lb />
the top of the first against Rich-<lb />
mond, but Spider hurler Keven<lb />
Sickinger and company kept<lb />
ECU scoreless the rest of the way<lb />
while gathering eight runs to take<lb />
the game.<lb />
In the first inning. Pirate short-<lb />
stop dreg Hardison tripled with<lb />
one away, then came home on a<lb />
very slow rolling infield single b<lb />
Chris Bradberry. Winfred<lb />
Johnson singled him to third and<lb />
a hi' b Mike Sullivan made it<lb />
2-0.<lb />
Jav McGraw cleared the bases<lb />
with a three-run homer for a 5-0<lb />
Pirate lead, but that ended the<lb />
EC I scoring as Sickinger and<lb />
relieve C.P. Richardson combin-<lb />
1 shut down the Pirate scor-<lb />
ing after that, getting seven<lb />
keouts while allowing only<lb />
five hits and walking three after<lb />
first frame.<lb />
The 5-0 ECl lead started to<lb />
melt away in the bottom of the<lb />
firs: when Rob Reid got on via an<lb />
: with one away, dreg Har-<lb />
dreu a waik from ECL<lb />
started Jim Peterson, then a<lb />
fielder's choice left runners on<lb />
rst and third with two outs. <lb />
 e by Bubba Paris gave the<lb />
Spiders 'heir firs; run of the day.<lb />
The Spiders added a run in the<lb />
third, then a five-run outburst<lb />
followed in the fourth, which<lb />
proved to be enough for the win.<lb />
Peterson struck out the first bat<lb />
ter, then walked John Knvak.<lb />
Stu Brown struck out, as did<lb />
Brian Jordan, but the wild pitch<lb />
Jordan swung at went to the<lb />
screen, allowing him on first and<lb />
sending Knvak to third.<lb />
A double by Rob Reid made it<lb />
5-4, then following another walk,<lb />
Andy Malloy slammed a three-<lb />
run blast for a 7-5 lead. The final<lb />
Spider tally came in the fifth on a<lb />
solo homer by Pete Engels.<lb />
McGraw's three-run hornet<lb />
paced the Pirate attack, while<lb />
Winfred Johnson had two hits in-<lb />
cluding a double. Hardison's tri-<lb />
ple was the only other extra base<lb />
hit for ECU, with Bradberry and<lb />
Jim Rilev adding a pair of singles<lb />
apiece.<lb />
Jim Peterson finished the vear<lb />
on the mound at 12-4, Johnson<lb />
came in on relict in the sixth and<lb />
held Richmond scoreless, but it<lb />
was too late.<lb />
Sickinger picked up his second<lb />
tourney win against E I I, raising<lb />
his season mark to 8-3. His per-<lb />
formance on the mound and at<lb />
bat earned him the Most<lb />
Valuable Plaver award for the<lb />
tournament.<lb />
ECU finished the season at<lb />
40-10, which is a new school<lb />
record for most wins, but was not<lb />

got to second on an error and was<lb />
wild-pitched to third, later scor-<lb />
ing on an out for a 3-2 Seahawk<lb />
margin, but a homer by Rod<lb />
Jones in the third quickly made it<lb />
4-2.<lb />
In the fourth ECU's Mark<lb />
Cockrell reached on a fielder's<lb />
choice, then Riley and Carter<lb />
singled, scoring Cockrell.<lb />
The Pirates tied it up in the<lb />
fifth when Bradberry doubled<lb />
and later scored on a doubleplay.<lb />
Johnson's 18th homer of the<lb />
season gave ECU the lead in the<lb />
eighth, but it didn't last long.<lb />
With two away in the bottom<lb />
of the eighth, Eric Hall walked<lb />
and John Catalano got on second<lb />
when his fly ball was lost in the<lb />
sun, scoring Hall. Johnson came<lb />
in on relief, but a single by Mike<lb />
Meadows scored Catalano.<lb />
Tim Langmeyer singled<lb />
another run in and a wild pitch<lb />
later scored Langmeyer, giving<lb />
the Seahawks an 8-5 margin.<lb />
Just as the fans were writing<lb />
off the Pirates again, in the top<lb />
of the ninth, pinchhiter Dean<lb />
Ehehalt walked and a Hardison<lb />
blast narrowed the lead to one.<lb />
Bradberry worked his way to a<lb />
full count, then slammed a<lb />
monstrous homer to tie it up.<lb />
It stayed that way all the way<lb />
to the top of the 11th. The Pirates<lb />
got an opening double from<lb />
David Ritchie and Carter sacrific-<lb />
ed him to third. A two out infield<lb />
hit bv Bradberrv gave ECU an<lb />
9-8 lead.<lb />
UNC-W got a runner on via an<lb />
error in the bottom of the 11th,<lb />
but ECU held on to gain the win.<lb />
Craig Van Deventer was rock-<lb />
ed for 10 hits, but still kept ECU<lb />
in the game. Winfred Johnson<lb />
got the win in a relief role,<lb />
finishing the year at 11-4.<lb />
Bradberry paced ECU with<lb />
three hits, while Carter, Johnson,<lb />
Hardison and Sides picked up<lb />
two each.<lb />
Finals Game One: ECU vs Rich-<lb />
mond:<lb />
On Saturday night, the Pirates<lb />
rolled over Richmond 12-8 to<lb />
force the deciding game on Sun-<lb />
day. ECU seemed to have gained<lb />
confidence with the performance<lb />
earlier in the day as they rushed<lb />
out to a good lead.<lb />

In the second inning. Sides<lb />

third on a bunt single by Ritchie,<lb />
who then came home on a hit by<lb />
Hardison.<lb />
The first of three Greg Harding<lb />

be enough for the win.<lb />
Cockrell singled and went to<lb />
