Charles H. Kennedy, assistant<lb />

Anonymous<lb />
cessful strategies implemented by-<lb />
some developing nations.<lb />
Several strategies of develop-<lb />
ment were explained, cuting<lb />
benefits and costs for each. One<lb />
strategy used by the successfully<lb />
developing nations of Hong<lb />
Kong and Singapore, is an export<lb />
directed policy in which a nation<lb />
will mass produce goods with a<lb />
market ability in first world na-<lb />
tions. This strategy requires<lb />
developing nations to actively<lb />
cooperate with the structure of<lb />
the world's economic policy-<lb />
while stabilizing their domestic<lb />
enviroment and increasing their<lb />
cultural and educational contact<lb />
with first world nations. Each na-<lb />
tion however, must provide in-<lb />

vestors, such as minimized<lb />
regulation, tax concessions, or<lb />
establishing a free trade zone,<lb />
said Kennedy.<lb />
Such strategies may cost the<lb />
nations in other areas, explained<lb />
Kennedy. A repressive political<lb />
structure may exist, a cultural<lb />
trade may occur weakening the<lb />
indigenous culture, and internal<lb />
inequality among the people may<lb />
develop, only for the benefit of<lb />
economic growth.<lb />

back to campus to celebrate their<lb />
success and provide role<lb />

Judge Arnold's public lecture,<lb />
"Remarks on University and<lb />

must protect those freedoms.<lb />
In addition, Arnold will be<lb />

The First Annual Communica-<lb />
tions Day Award was given<lb />
Wednesday night before an au-<lb />
dience of TV reporters,<lb />
distinguished guests, and the first<lb />
graduating class in the Depart-<lb />
ment of Communications.<lb />
The first graduating class in<lb />
communications presented the<lb />
award to an individual in the<lb />
broadcasting or media field who<lb />
best represented the qualities of<lb />
leadership, professionalism, and<lb />
dedication within an 100 mile<lb />
radius of Greenville.<lb />
Jim Woods, weatheranchor at<lb />
WNCT-channel 9 received the<lb />
first award.<lb />
"I'm almost speechless said<lb />
Woods. "I really appreciate the<lb />
award. 1 hope everyone has as<lb />
much luck in broadcasting as I<lb />
have he added.<lb />
According to Woods, with<lb />
broadcasting being such a<lb />
saturated field it is important to<lb />
apply yourself. Woods stressed<lb />
the importance of being yourself<lb />
 f f t r r<lb />
mittee that towing should be<lb />
limited to those vehicles which<lb />
either constitute a traffic hazard<lb />
or are blocking the proper entry<lb />
and exit from a residence or<lb />
business.<lb />
He also said in exchange for<lb />
not towing, a small increase in<lb />
parking fines would be accep-<lb />
table.<lb />
Brown asked the Council to<lb />
consider extending the time limit<lb />
for parking from two hours to<lb />
three. He stated this change<lb />
"Asking us to be your<lb />
personal parking lot is<lb />
outrageous. <lb />
Mike Casper<lb />
would allow students and visitors<lb />
more time on campus.<lb />
Meyei said the ECU ad-<lb />
ministration backed Brown's first<lb />
two proposals, but not the one to<lb />
extend the time limit.<lb />
"I didn't think they would be<lb />
apt to change the time limit, so<lb />
we decided to emphasize on the<lb />
first two proposals said<lb />
Chancellor John Howell.<lb />
He added that "any help we<lb />
can get to make university park-<lb />
ing better will be appreciated<lb />
Casper said Tar River residents<lb />
were against Brown's proposals.<lb />
"Asking us to be your (the<lb />
students) personal parking lot is<lb />
outrageous said Casper. "This<lb />
plan is only short-term<lb />
Greenville Mayor 1 es Garner<lb />
suggested a system to lock the<lb />
front tires of cars exceeding the<lb />
time limit or causing a traffic<lb />
hazard.<lb />
The tires would not be unlock-<lb />
ed until the owner of the car had<lb />
paid a fine.<lb />
A suggestion was made to give<lb />
offenders three tickets before<lb />
towing their vehicle.<lb />
Committee members pointed<lb />
out the city of Greenville would<lb />
need a computer system to make<lb />
this idea work and that the matter<lb />
would be further discussed.<lb />
One committee member<lb />
brought up the idea of the univer-<lb />
sity working with the city to trace<lb />
the owners oi the vehicles with<lb />
previous violations.<lb />
ECU has a system oi matching<lb />
students with vehicles due to re-<lb />
quired registration.<lb />
According to Meyer, this could<lb />
be possible if the details were<lb />
worked out.<lb />
Both Brown and Casper seem-<lb />
ed satisfied with the compnrmse<lb />
The committee decided to<lb />
gather more information before<lb />
their next meeting on May 14.<lb />
Their recommendation will<lb />
then be given to the City Council.<lb />

The results oi Wednesday's<lb />
SRA elections are in, and senior<lb />
Bryan Lassiter, who ran unop-<lb />

239 votes<lb />
Three other candidates for the<lb />
top five offices also ran unoppos-<lb />

president with 241 votes; Kimber-<lb />
ly Parrish won secretary with 240<lb />
votes, and Lori Jackson received<lb />
237 votes to win the office of<lb />
treasurer.<lb />
The race for publicity chairper-<lb />
son was a close one however,<lb />
with sophomore Jody Jameson<lb />
defeating Janet Batten 126 to<lb />
112, a margin oi 14 votes.<lb />
Since students must have their<lb />
SRA cards to vote, it is difficult<lb />
to say how many people were<lb />
eligible to cast a ballot, according<lb />
to Carolyn Fulghurn, associate<lb />
dean for Student Life. Out of the<lb />
5,100 students who currently live<lb />
in the dorms, Fulghurn estimates<lb />
about 70 percent of them were<lb />

will be recognition he added.<lb />
Woods has worked in various<lb />
phases of the media including be-<lb />

newsman, a sportscaster, and a<lb />
weatheranchor. Woods advised<lb />
the students to be versatile and<lb />

Divorce Also Puts Stress On Students<lb />
GAINESVILLE, FL (CPS) -<lb />
It's 8 p.m. on a Thursday even-<lb />
ing, and Graham, an engineering<lb />
student at the University of<lb />
Honda, struggles to absorb even<lb />
a page of his book on Digital<lb />
Communications Systems.<lb />
The text is clear enough, but<lb />
Graham's mind is 200 miles away<lb />
 worrying about his mother<lb />
and how she will pay her bills,<lb />
wondering if his father will ever<lb />
speak to him again.<lb />
Graham's parents are getting<lb />
divorced, and instead of study-<lb />
ing, he just wants to scream.<lb />
Graham's not alone. Parental<lb />
divorce is a disturbingly frequent<lb />
reason students drop out of col-<lb />
lege, says Susan Hambleton,<lb />
who's earning her doctorate in<lb />
counseling education at the<lb />
University of Florida.<lb />
"They may not direct!) sa<lb />
'I'm leaving school because m<lb />
parents are divorcing but along<lb />
with divorce you find a lot of ex-<lb />
tenuating circumstances the<lb />
financial, emotional and reloca-<lb />
tion stress that goes along with<lb />
divorce she says.<lb />
Hambleton, in fact, is finding<lb />
that divorce normally studied<lb />
for its effects on young children<lb />
can have a great impact on col-<lb />
lege students.<lb />
College-aged children of<lb />
divorcees, Hambleton says, may<lb />
develop an inability to develop<lb />
loving relationships of their own.<lb />
"The impact (of their parents'<lb />
divorce) may be 'whom can I<lb />
trust?' "<lb />
Hambleton has formed a sup-<lb />
port group at the UF Student<lb />
Health Services clinic to help<lb />
students caught in the emotional<lb />
whirlwind surrounding a family<lb />
breakup.<lb />
"I don't think people reallv<lb />
recognize the needs college<lb />
students have in a divorce she<lb />
says. "They assume that since<lb />
thev're older, they can handle<lb />
it<lb />
Students going through a<lb />
parental breakup often feel they<lb />
need to go home to "take care of<lb />
things Hambleton says.<lb />
"Sometimes they get really<lb />
distracted, particularly if they're<lb />
far away from home<lb />
Graham, for instance, feels<lb />
pressured to find a high-paying<lb />
job to help his mother, who's<lb />
retired and can expect little from<lb />
her soon-to-be ex-husband.<lb />
Though he plans to finish this<lb />
school year, his last semester o a<lb />
five-year degree, Graham says his<lb />
plans for graduate school are<lb />
dead.<lb />
Students in Hambleton's group<lb />
their names are changed for<lb />
privacy are in many different<lb />
stages of family breakup, from<lb />
impending divorce to 10 years<lb />
after.<lb />
On the Friday before spring<lb />
break, the support group<lb />
gathered in her office for the<lb />
sixth time.<lb />
While many at the university<lb />
had already packed their bags for<lb />
home, anticipating a week of<lb />
thoughtless relaxation, mom<lb />
cooking dinner and perhaps a<lb />
holiday family get-together, the<lb />
mood in the health clinic office<lb />
bordered on anxiety.<lb />
"I'm feeling pressure from<lb />
both sides says Regina, 18.<lb />
"My father asked me to come<lb />
visit him. But I'm going home to<lb />
see my mom. It feels funny<lb />
Regina's parents divorced 10<lb />
years ago, yet parental divorce<lb />
can be "like a pill that takes a few<lb />
years to come out in your body<lb />
says Steven, 24, whose family<lb />
split up two years ago for the<lb />
third time.<lb />
Like many in the group, Steven<lb />
and Regina say they're just now<lb />
feeling the repercussions feel-<lb />
ings of anger, insecurity and guilt<lb />
 of their family breakups.<lb />
Steven says he feels a heaw<lb />

The appointment of Wease, ef-<lb />

by Eugene Ryan, dean of the Col-<lb />

"I am very pleased that Hugh<lb />

"Each year he has arranged<lb />
valuable activities for in-service<lb />

that he has been named chair of<lb />
the History Department in the<lb />

Graham, a 25-year-old senior,<lb />

is so important and scary <lb />
for young adults, the disillusion-<lb />

Hambleton says.<lb />

ic were 37,603 people living in<lb />
vt lie. 1 1,300 of those<lb />
sidents were black while 13,000 of<lb />
re students.<lb />
not all students live in<lb />
i tralized location as most<lb />
(a: least partiallv out d"<lb />
nomic necessity) do. Also, a few<lb />
dents commute from out of<lb />
tow<lb />
Ui i<lb />
evertneless, students certainly<lb />
:omprise a substantial potential<lb />
voting block and one that con<lb />
tributes substantial sums to tit<lb />
revenue of the city and its ma-<lb />
chants. ()n thai basis alone, it<lb />
seems to us, that they deserve to<lb />
have at least one district in which<lb />
they are given the same shot at elec-<lb />
ting a representative of their own<lb />
choosing as are black residents.<lb />
The reasons for this are simple<lb />
first, students have identifiable in-<lb />
terests which seperate them from<lb />
the rest oi' the residents of a city.<lb />
The recent vote in Boone in which<lb />
students proved to be the decisive<lb />
factor in a referendum allowing tit<lb />
sale ol alchohol is one illustration<lb />
ol this fact. The candidate's forum<lb />
sponsored by the 1 C I SGA last<lb />
semester is another. At the forum<lb />
students identified a variety of<lb />
issues trom voter registration to te-<lb />
nant's nghts and a proposal to<lb />
build a crosswalk on tenth street<lb />
that concern them as citizens of<lb />
Greenville. Second, students have<lb />
laced some of the same kinds of<lb />
discrimination and narrassmeri<lb />
thai black residents have.<lb />
This last point was made obvious<lb />
when a previous registrar for the<lb />
Pitt County Board oT Meet ions ad-<lb />
dressed thecitv council alleging thai<lb />
students trom oul of town nave no<lb />
right to registei to vote in Green<lb />
ville because thev are not perma-<lb />
nent residents of the city. Shortly<lb />
thereafter she was corrected bv Mr.<lb />
Bower and a member of the city<lb />
council who informed her that the<lb />
law allow v students to establish<lb />
legal residence after thev have re-<lb />
mained in the town where thev are<lb />
attending school for at least thirty<lb />
days. I hus, students do not have to<lb />
undergo any special tests to<lb />
establish their residency in order to<lb />
register to vote if thev can prove<lb />
that they have resided m Greenville<lb />
tor at least 30 days.<lb />
The Halloween riots that occured<lb />
over a decade ago are vet another<lb />
example of the ways in which<lb />
students have had an experience in<lb />
some ways similar to that suffered<lb />
by blacks. During thai incident<lb />
police overreacted" to a student<lb />
gathering downtown on Halloween<lb />
night and inflicting unwarranted<lb />
and capricious violence upon<lb />
students accordingto virtually afl<lb />
reports.<lb />
It is true that relations between<lb />
students and the city have been<lb />
vastly improved since the Hallo-<lb />
ween riots. Vet, under similar cir-<lb />
cumstances it is not unthinkabc<lb />
that the same might happen again<lb />
The best safeguard of student in-<lb />
terests, therefore, is a student sea<lb />
on the city council. Students in<lb />
other parts oi the state are active in<lb />
city government. Students here<lb />
should be too.<lb />

Allow me to express a few sen-<lb />

(the third, mind you) enlightening bit<lb />
ol rhetoric regarding ECU, its stu-<lb />

between N.C. State and ECU.<lb />
Let's start with his declaration that<lb />
the majority of the students arrested<lb />
after State NCAA victory were<lb />
from other institutions such as UNC<lb />
and ECU. 1 believe his words were,<lb />
"It was discovered that the vast ma-<lb />
jority of arrests involved non-NCSl<lb />
persons first of all, Milton. I have<lb />
never heard of any other form of ma-<lb />
jority don't be redundant. Second-<lb />
ly, I'm very interested in knowing<lb />
who the heck discovered this in the<lb />
first place substantiate your (alleg-<lb />
ed) tacts<lb />
Now then. On to your question of<lb />
whether or noi NCSU cares about its<lb />
rivalry with ECU. As you so boldlv<lb />
proclaim as if you could speak for<lb />
the enure student body at State <lb />
"Their main priorities are spelled<lb />

Don't be silly. Mill. At least State<lb />
people can recognize a good football<lb />
game when they see it. Incidentally,<lb />
when do you think State will trow up<lb />
and play real football like ECU?<lb />
Lastly is your assertion that all of<lb />
ECU is made up of a mixture of<lb />
State. Duke, and Carolina fans get<lb />
a grip. It" that were true, why don't<lb />
these students simply transfer to<lb />

What is happening here? Am I go-<lb />
ing crazy, or are those old reruns of F<lb />
Troop, McHales Navy and Gomer<lb />
Pyle finally going to my head? You<lb />
tell me, but it has become appar- nt<lb />
that the ROTC programs of this<lb />
country are focussing too intently<lb />
upon cummulative G.P.As and<lb />
testing performance instead of the<lb />
very essence of military dogma, the<lb />
ability to lead. Granted, there should<lb />
be a correlation between intellect and<lb />
leadership, but there is a fine line<lb />
which must at times be crossed to br-<lb />
ing in both the truely competent and<lb />
desiring individual. Who is to say that<lb />
a meek, mild, subserviant, nonag-<lb />
gressive and nonverbose individual<lb />
won't take control of hisher F-16<lb />
fighter and dart about the skies<lb />
destroying all aggressors like a tiger<lb />
let out of its cage. However, the se-<lb />
cond Finest Air Force in the world,<lb />
the Israli Air Force, would be<lb />
somewhat skeptical of this personali-<lb />
ty profiles success in air combat. Yet,<lb />
why do a few such individuals get this<lb />
chance<lb />
Or what about the bible toting Ar-<lb />
my cadet who hides in his room,<lb />
cowering in his own self doubt and in-<lb />
securities while using the power of an<lb />
institution to protect him from his<lb />
own mistakes, along with a few<lb />
fellow cadets, Army atheletes who<lb />
cannot accept defeat with dignity or<lb />
honor. Character is what is lacking in<lb />
today's military. Shuttles will crash<lb />
because someone has an 11:30 T-off<lb />
time. An emensely wealthy United<lb />
States Air Force cannot provide safe<lb />
air transport home for brave and<lb />
honorable men and women soldiers<lb />
stationed in the Miadie East. The<lb />
U.S. Army cannot provide competent<lb />
leadership to free Americans held in a<lb />
hostile, foreign land. Where are the<lb />
young leaders, the risk takers, the<lb />
winners of the future. The young Bil-<lb />
ly Mitchells, Chuck Yeagers, Sgt.<lb />
Rutchkas, Audie Murphys, Pattons,<lb />
McConnels, Jabbaras, Thomas' etc,<lb />
w here are these legacies of the future?<lb />
I'm not saying that there are no<lb />
qualified cadets here at ECU, and to<lb />
these people I humbly apologize, this<lb />
article doesn't pertain to you. Let's<lb />
face it, a monkey can turn a key, as<lb />
can the Einsteins of this world, but<lb />
it's desire, character, honor, courage,<lb />
pride, perseverance, and intellect that<lb />
make up the necessary qualities of a<lb />
winning officer. A lack of intelligence<lb />
may escape the history books, but<lb />
poor leadership will always make the<lb />
front page and can never be excused.<lb />
I think it is time for serious introspec-<lb />
tion on the part of this campuses<lb />
ROTC and the nation's ROTC units,<lb />
who need to look closely at the<lb />
screening processes and cadets, and<lb />
start giving the due priority to ability<lb />
as well as intellect. "It's time to stop,<lb />

PIRGs<lb />
Funny how the brief passage of<lb />
time can cloud peoples' memories.<lb />
The March 27 editorial in The East<lb />
Carolinian provides a good example.<lb />
In discussing alleged dirty cam-<lb />
paign tactics in the recent SGA elec-<lb />
tions, the editorialist harkened back<lb />
to a controversial campus referendum<lb />
in April 1984. The question on the<lb />
ballot asked ECU students to approve<lb />
a mandatory tax for the left-wing<lb />
Public Interest Research Group<lb />
(PIRG). Leading the opposition to<lb />
the proposal were the College<lb />
Republicans, of which I was chair-<lb />
man at the time of the vote.<lb />
The editorialist, who led the failed<lb />
fight for the PIRG tax (students<lb />
voted nearly three-to-one against it),<lb />
accused College Republicans of tear-<lb />
ing down PIRG posters. But here are<lb />
the facts: 1) one CR tore down a<lb />
PIRG poster and was properly<lb />
disciplined, 2) the PIRG peoples'<lb />
poster-destruction drive was, at first,<lb />
so successful that I had to direct our<lb />
campaign workers to place our<lb />
posters up with sturdy wallpaper<lb />
paste, and 3) two of our CRs, both of<lb />
whom are prominent leaders in stu-<lb />
dent government, then witnessed<lb />
PIRG workers reacting angrily, say-<lb />
ing, "They put some kind of crap on<lb />
their posters, man! We can't get 'em<lb />
down<lb />
It's worth mentioning that PIRG,<lb />
powerful and nationwide, rakes in<lb />
millions of dollars in forced taxes on<lb />
students. Recently, it lost a major<lb />
case, when the Supreme Court sup-<lb />
ported a lower court ruling that<lb />
PIRG's mandatory fee was un-<lb />
constitutional (Galda vs. Bloustein).<lb />
Anyone who wants to learn more<lb />
about that memorable referendum<lb />
campaign can write me at the College<lb />
Republican National Committee, 310<lb />
First Street southeast, Washington,<lb />
DC 20003. I'll send you a free copy of<lb />
my personal account.<lb />

Class of 1985<lb />
Editor's Note:<lb />
To trade charges and counter-<lb />
charges will mean little to readers un-<lb />
familiar with the PIRG issue. Two<lb />
years have passed since the referen-<lb />
dum was held. Yet, it must be said<lb />
that there were, in fact, witnesses who<lb />
saw opponents of the PIRG referen-<lb />
dum systematically ripping down<lb />
PIRG posters.<lb />
What is more than ludicrous is<lb />
suggest that those who worked for the<lb />
establishment of a PIRG here at EC"L<lb />
ran a poster destruction drive again s:<lb />
the opposition. They did not An<lb />
it is true that those who led the fish:<lb />
against the PIRGs did put their<lb />
posters up with wallpaper paste.<lb />
something which was baffling at the<lb />
time.<lb />
The Managing Editor of<lb />
East Carolinian during that period <lb />
Darryl Brown is aware of thest<lb />
facts as is (he Attorney Genera<lb />
the Honors Board of that time <lb />
Harry Dest. Moreover, PIRGs<lb />
not be fairly characterized as<lb />
wing. The majority of PIRGs w<lb />
on moderate issues like monitor. ng<lb />
rivers and streams for signs of poliu<lb />
lion and working to expose consumer<lb />
fraud such as price fixing. In 1984<lb />
they organized a nationwide studen:<lb />
voter registration drive which led to<lb />
students at ECU registering over 4(X<lb />
students to vote in Greenville<lb />
Students were not asked whether the<lb />
were Republicans or Democrats the<lb />
were simply registered. Currently,<lb />
PIRGs are organizing the National<lb />
Student Campaign Against Hunger,<lb />
which has been formed to combat<lb />
hunger both in America and in<lb />
Africa.<lb />
Yes, it's true that some PIRG-<lb />
work on issues like the arms race ana<lb />
other controversial issues, but most<lb />
PIRGs work on issues of concern<lb />
broad cross section of students like<lb />
environmental and consumer issues<lb />
And, even in the event that a PIRG<lb />
works on an issue like the arms race,<lb />
it is what the students who run the<lb />
PIRG on that campus have chosen to<lb />
do. PIRGs are run democratically<lb />
Those who fund the PIRG elect their<lb />
own board of directors who choose<lb />
PIRG projects and allocate PIRG<lb />
Jees, not unlike student government.<lb />
But all of this is academic. Perhaps<lb />
what might shed some light on<lb />
what is true and what is not is the<lb />
fact that in the April 19, 1984 edition<lb />
oj The East Carolinian, Mr. Kilcovne<lb />

behind Around The World, yet it<lb />
holds many new surprises for the<lb />
avid Prince listener.<lb />
The bottom line on Parade,<lb />
like past Prince albums, is: If you<lb />
like Prince, you'll love this<lb />
album, but if you don't like<lb />
Prince, avoid it.<lb />
songs are getting good regional<lb />
airplay. They love playing live.<lb />
Do they have a record label?<lb />
Not yet. Besides the EP that<lb />
was released on the now defunct<lb />
Dolphin label, The Graphic has<lb />
appeared on two various artists<lb />
collections. More Mondo, a col-<lb />
lege radio staple, contains the<lb />
commercially accessible "I Flew<lb />
Like a Bird and from the<lb />
studios of the U.K The Graphic<lb />
appears on another NC compila-<lb />
tion entitled Welcome to Com-<lb />
boland.<lb />
North Carolina in England?<lb />
That, in itself, should tell you<lb />
something about the music<lb />
emanating from one of the most<lb />
conservative states in our great<lb />
country.<lb />
But a group cannot live on<lb />
various artists albums alone. No,<lb />
indeed one must have a label.<lb />
Newell says within the next six to<lb />
nine months, hopefully, the label<lb />
situation will be remedied.<lb />
We're hoping right along with<lb />
them.<lb />
Newell assures us that they<lb />
have a lot of material. Enough<lb />
for a triple album, he says.<lb />
We'll be waiting.<lb />
But if you're not the waiting<lb />
type, catch The Graphic down at<lb />

Joe Champagne, an ECU<lb />
photography graduate student, is<lb />
exhibiting his oil pigment<lb />
photography process on April<lb />
6-13 in the Mendenhall Gallery.<lb />
This exhibit is presented as a part<lb />
of the ECU Student Union Visual<lb />
Arts Series.<lb />
The oil pigment process is from<lb />
the 19th century and has only<lb />
been revived by a few<lb />
photographers in the 20th cen-<lb />
tury, according to Champagne in<lb />
a recent interview. In fact, he<lb />
came across it only while looking<lb />
through a textbook.<lb />
The process is a continuous<lb />
tone process. That means it has<lb />
an infinite range from black to<lb />
white (like a conventional black<lb />
and white photo) as opposed to a<lb />
half-tone which imitates gray by<lb />
enlarging or shrinking black dots.<lb />
Champagne says the good<lb />
thing about the procedure is that<lb />
it can be made from scratch and<lb />
different combinations work for<lb />
different people. Champagne<lb />
worked through trial and error<lb />

height, when they see Lanford<lb />
Wilson's Fifth of July. This pro-<lb />

will be presented by the East<lb />

Kenneth Talley. a Vietnam<lb />
veteran making do with two<lb />

owns the farm where he has been<lb />
living with his male lover. The ac-<lb />
tion takes place on the evening of<lb />
the holiday, and the following<lb />
morning when some old friends<lb />
and relatives visit Talley for the<lb />
weekend.<lb />
All the characters are either<lb />
idealogically or physically involv-<lb />
ed with each other. There is<lb />
Ciwen, a millionairess trying to<lb />
become a Nashville pop star;<lb />
John, who manages her affairs;<lb />
Jed, a dedicated botanist; Jane, a<lb />
cynical wisecracking mother and<lb />

her bright but foolish teenage<lb />
daughter; Aunt Sally, a jovial<lb />
mild eccentric who carries about<lb />
Robert Ruffin, Michael Pitts, and Kelly Anchor share a light moment<lb />
in the ECU Playhouse production of Fifth O f July. The production<lb />
runs April 16-19, at 8:15pm in McGinnhTh eatre.<lb />
her husband's ashes in a candy-<lb />
box; and Weston, a country-<lb />
music writer, guitar strumming<lb />
simpleton who is the butt of<lb />
everyone's jokes.<lb />
The play has many comic<lb />
moments; in fact, it was billed as<lb />
a comedy during its popular New<lb />
York run. However, Director<lb />
Biehn warns that it would be a<lb />
mistake for theatregoers to ex-<lb />
pect a comedy in the same vein as<lb />
those written by Neil Simon or<lb />
the traditional situation comedy<lb />
on TV.<lb />
Said Biehn: "It's true, this is<lb />
indeed a very funny play in many<lb />
ways, but not far beneath the sur-<lb />
face is a hard-hitting and power-<lb />
ful drama that deals with the loss<lb />
of structure in our lives. It pierces<lb />
right to the heart of the matter<lb />
often using very blunt language<lb />
and for that reason, we think it's<lb />
best suited for, and will prove<lb />
popular, with mature audiences;<lb />
especially those who lived<lb />

Liquor is known the world over as the best stuff<lb />
to get you drunker quicker. Isn't it wonderful?<lb />
But where can you find a good bottle oi<lb />
squeezins?<lb />
The Great American ABC Store, oi course.<lb />
Sometimes it's hard to pick and choose a par-<lb />
ticular brand of liquor. As you walk through the<lb />
doors, your eyes are bombarded bv fancy labels<lb />
that look like homeless puppy<lb />
dogs. The bottles stare back at<lb />
you bragging about how old<lb />
they are and what proof they<lb />
are.<lb />
Ye gods. Decisions, deci-<lb />
sions.<lb />
Green bottles, orange bottles,<lb />
purple bottles, brown bottles.<lb />
The ABC store is virtual'y a<lb />
rainbow of intoxicants.<lb />
This article will help your<lb />
decision making process and<lb />
hopefully educate you in the<lb />
various types of spirits.<lb />
Bourbon Here's an old<lb />
favorite that most college students are weaned on<lb />
How delightful it was to get your roommate to<lb />
purchase that first bottle of Jack Daniels, and how<lb />
merciless it was to find out that the sun was vour<lb />
enemy the next morning.<lb />
From the corn vineyards of Tennessee, you can<lb />
expect a harsh but intriguing taste with a bouquet<lb />
that could revive the dead. But I like Jack Daniels,<lb />
mainly for sentimental veasons.<lb />
Times have changed, though. You too can<lb />
graduate to the ranks of Wild Turkey 101, which<lb />
is undoubtedly the best bourbon on the continent.<lb />
It's smooth, flavorful and amusing. However, for<lb />
a student's budget Turkey is quite expensive. Go<lb />
back to Jack Daniels.<lb />
Scotch It's truly hard to find a decent scotch.<lb />
First, if you're from the J.D. Green label class,<lb />
your taste buds may find little amusement with the<lb />
dry and bitter taste of this particular liquor. In-<lb />
deed, cne must acquire a taste for scotch.<lb />
For the student's pocketbook, scotch is not in-<lb />
expensive, and in that case, vour choice should be<lb />
on the money A good primer would, indeed<lb />
be Cutty Sark Expensive, but just right. Besides'<lb />
ks nice.<lb />
Rum First of all, do not use the new Coke for<lb />
mixing. I: tastes horrible. My favorite rum is<lb />
Bacardi, ligl dark. Don't be deceived by the<lb />
expensive stuff. The price tags can become'very<lb />
outraj and the appalling thing about that is<lb />
Bacardi, a decently priced rum, is like a slant-six<lb />
engine u get good mileage from something<lb />
reliable. Expensive rum is like a V-8 - too much<lb />
Vodka Is it possible to find<lb />
a bad bottle of vodka? Sure<lb />
miff. The best test I know of is<lb />
simply finding a bottle that has<lb />
a strong bouquet but little taste.<lb />
Vodka should be judged on its<lb />
iack of taste. Smoothness<lb />
counts, too. When being<lb />
choosy, go for Smirnoff. It<lb />
hasn't done me wrong yet<lb />
Tequila Picking the right<lb />
tequila is very important. Since<lb />
a good v mtage tequila will make<lb />
vV vou horny, be willing to put<lb />
down some monevbu not a<lb />
whole lot oi money. Of course. I'm talking about<lb />
my good tnend, Pepe. Okay, the bottle isn't very<lb />
attractive, but the liquor inside will get vou excited<lb />
all the same.<lb />
Now. if vou want the expensive stuff that packs<lb />
an extra kick with an added smoothness Jose<lb />
C uervo ,s what you're searching for. Besides vour<lb />
tnends will see the bottle on your mantle md envy<lb />
your taste. <lb />
Gin Now here is my favorite liquor of all<lb />
me. Gin like scotch, requires educated taste<lb />
buds. At first taste, most people say gi recalls the<lb />
flavor of pine sap (who. ,n their right mind, drinks<lb />
sap of pine). Gin should be extremely dry for the<lb />
proper effect. For the best tasting gin ifs , ti!<lb />
between Beefeater and Tanqueray. Both show<lb />
good body, and one of them comes in a greenJk<lb />

Defense Takes Scrimmage<lb />
JIM IFl Tl.K'sv TbtMttralWa<lb />
The Pirate football squad has been working hard in Spring drills in<lb />
preparation for what promises to be a difficult schedule.<lb />
First Tournament Championship<lb />
By TIM CHANDLER<lb />
The defense dominated the<lb />
play in the Pirates second full-<lb />
scale scrimmage of the season.<lb />
The scrimmage was held last<lb />
Saturday in Ficklen Stadium.<lb />
Using a scoring system that<lb />
awarded the defense for intercep-<lb />
tions, fumble recoveries and<lb />
tackles behind the line of scrim-<lb />
mage, the defense defeated the<lb />
offense 44-25.<lb />
Gary Stephens, Ellis Dillahunt<lb />
and Roswell Streeter all in-<lb />
tercepted passes for the defense.<lb />
Bubba Waters and Steve<lb />
Englehart each contributed a<lb />
fumble recovery for the defensive<lb />
squad.<lb />
The offensive unit scored four<lb />
touchdowns, each on running<lb />
plays. Anthony Simpson, Reggie<lb />
McKinney, Terry Paige and<lb />
Dwight Richardson scored the<lb />
touchdowns.<lb />
Second-vear head coach Art<lb />
Baker said that he was pleased<lb />
with the play of the defensive<lb />
unit, however he was dissap-<lb />
pointed that the offense wasn't<lb />
able to overcome the slow start<lb />
they had during the scrimmage.<lb />
"We got a bad start today and<lb />
never did quite catch up Baker<lb />
said. "A lot of that had to do<lb />
"The defense played excep-<lb />
tionally well, they played<lb />
very aggressive and our<lb />
defensive linemen did a<lb />
good job<lb />
 Art Baker<lb />
with the way the defense played<lb />
today. The defense played excep-<lb />
tionally well, they played very ag-<lb />
gressive and our defensive<lb />
linemen did a good job<lb />
Baker was especially pleased<lb />
with the performance of the<lb />
defensive linemen. The linemen<lb />
include: David Plum, Medrick<lb />
Rainbow, Carl Carney, John<lb />
Williamson and Willie Powell.<lb />
Baker also praised free safety<lb />
Dillahunt and linebaker Vinson<lb />
Smith for their great play on<lb />
defense.<lb />
Baker said that he was disap-<lb />
pointed with the passing game on<lb />
offense, however he cited the of-<lb />
fensive linemen for their good<lb />
play.<lb />
David Plum commented on the<lb />
defense's dominance of Satur-<lb />
day's scrimmage.<lb />
"The defense always comes<lb />
around first stated Plum. "We<lb />
basically play on instinct,<lb />
whereas the offense has more to<lb />
learn<lb />
Plum also stated that the team<lb />
was playing much better this year<lb />
than they were last season.<lb />
"We are playing more ag-<lb />
gressive, and we are also ex-<lb />
ecuting a lot better added<lb />
Plum.<lb />
Another defensive lineman,<lb />
Carl Carney, also emphasized<lb />
how the the defense is ahead of<lb />
the offense, when asked of last<lb />
Saturday's scrimmage.<lb />
"We (the defense) picked up<lb />
where we left off last year<lb />
stated Carney. "The offense is a<lb />
lot more technical and takes<lb />
longer to get right<lb />
The Bucs only have one more<lb />
week of Spring practice left. The<lb />
Spring drills will come to a close<lb />
next Sat. Apr. 19 when the an-<lb />
nual Purple-Gold Game will be<lb />
played.<lb />

The two-day tournament had a<lb />

Boone (a team from Boone that<lb />
did not show). Pool 'B' consisted<lb />
of the Cutrates, Fresh Produce.<lb />
Duke and Raleigh<lb />
The initial day determined the<lb />

Below is how the placement<lb />
and scores looked after the first<lb />
day of competition. This -et up<lb />
the pairnings for the tournament.<lb />
1. L' Hopital Rule-f-5.5).<lb />
2. F-resh Produce 4.66).<lb />

4. Duke 1.??).<lb />
5. Cutrates t-2.<lb />
6. Raleigh (-3.5).<lb />
1err Pranksters (-8).<lb />
lor the Iraies, they finished the<lb />
tourney with a 4-1 mark; but<lb />
took home their first champion-<lb />
ship in their six-year history of<lb />
the sport club. (Actually, the<lb />
Irates did win a tournament in<lb />
the spring of 1983. the Ultimax 1.<lb />
however the win was due to a<lb />
cancellation because o snow).<lb />
After an opening day loss :o 1<lb />
Hopital Rule 13-11. the Irates<lb />
rolled past the Merry Pranksters<lb />
later that afternoon.<lb />
In the second day of the<lb />
tourney, ECU got passed Raleigh<lb />
handily by the score o 13-6.<lb />
Then they squeaked by Fresh<lb />
Produce '5-13 in the quarter-<lb />
finals. Fresh Produce was the<lb />
previously No. 1 ranked college<lb />
team in the SAL'C (South Atlan-<lb />
tic Ultimate Conference which<lb />
includes college teams from<lb />
N.C, S.C Va. and Md.).<lb />
The Irates avenged their only<lb />
tournament loss as they downed<lb />
L' Hopital Rule 15-11, in taking<lb />
the championship. Duke took<lb />
third place as they topped Fresh<lb />
Produce in the consolation<lb />
bracket. Senior Bob Deman, who<lb />
was voted by the players as the<lb />
tournament MVP, was pleased<lb />
with the final results as well as his<lb />
winning of the MVP award.<lb />
"It (the tourney victory) was<lb />
especially sweet for me and David<lb />
(Barnhardt), because we're<lb />
graduating it's our last<lb />
Ultimax Tournament we'll play<lb />
in Deman said. "It was great<lb />
for me to get it (the MVP),<lb />
because I'm a senior and it's the<lb />
last game for me.<lb />
"I'll make note that six people<lb />
were nominated for the MVP<lb />
Deman added. "It showed how<lb />
well our team played<lb />
With the Iraies taking first<lb />
place and the Cutrates finishing<lb />
fifth, it says a lot for Greenville's<lb />
frisbee talent, according to<lb />
Deman.<lb />
"The tournament was even<lb />
competition. It wasn't over-<lb />
whelming Deman explained.<lb />
"I'm amazed that the Cutrates<lb />
came in fifth, because the two<lb />
(ECU) teams were made from<lb />
one. We took a lot of talent from<lb />
them<lb />
The Irate team members in-<lb />

('Quasar' Brady did not see ac-<lb />

while downtown).<lb />
With the success of the Irates<lb />
this weekend, some players ex-<lb />
pressed their feelings after the<lb />
win.<lb />
"I feel that this Ultimax vic-<lb />

The Fady Pirate netters fell 7-2<lb />
last Monday to the Lady 49'ers of<lb />
UNC-Charlotte, bringing ECU to<lb />
a 4-4 spring-season record.<lb />
The Pirates captured one<lb />
singles and one doubles match.<lb />
Becky Clements put away her<lb />
No. 1 singles opponent Tracy<lb />
Steve in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.<lb />
The Bucs other victory came<lb />
courtesy of Ann Manderfield and<lb />
Lisa Eichholz. as they edged out<lb />
Tina Cascio and Doris Wangerin<lb />
in a come-from-behind win.<lb />
Manderfield and Eichholz fell 2-6<lb />
in the first set, but pulled out two<lb />
consecutive 7-6 tiebreaker wins in<lb />
the second and third, closing out<lb />
the match.<lb />
However, the 49'ers had the<lb />
match sewn up 5-1 after singles<lb />
play, so a win was out of reach<lb />
for the Pirates.<lb />
Apr. 4, 1986<lb />
The Lady netters came away<lb />
with a decisive win over Meredith<lb />
College last Friday, taking five<lb />
singles and all three doubles mat-<lb />
ches for an 8-1 victory.<lb />
In this match, the tables were<lb />
turned, as Clements was the only<lb />
player to emerge with a loss. She<lb />

At No. 4, Amy Ziemer took<lb />

straight-set wins.<lb />
Manderfield and Eichholz led<lb />

In men's tennis play, the Bucs'<lb />

Apr. 4, 1986<lb />
However, last Friday's match<lb />

match was led by a domination in<lb />
the singles play by the Pirates.<lb />

The No. 3 spot saw yet another<lb />

giving ECU the necessary five<lb />
wins before the doubles play<lb />

In doubles, the Pirates took<lb />
two of the three matches played.<lb />
Ibarguen and Maynor topped<lb />
Melhorn and Taylor 8-6. The<lb />
match was called at this point due<lb />
