In a sample of almost 300<lb />

that have immediate impact on<lb />

Students listed abortion, the<lb />

world hunger, unemployment,<lb />
poverty and equal rights as their<lb />
most important concerns.<lb />
"International issues of today<lb />

But today's students, McClure<lb />

First Annual Veterans Awareness Day Success At ECU<lb />

A tribute to all veterans at<lb />
Memorial Gym set the pace<lb />
Wednesday for the first annual<lb />
Veterans Awareness Day spon-<lb />
sored by the ECU Veterans Club.<lb />
"Veterans Awareness Day was<lb />
designed to show the ECU stu-<lb />
dent body what the veterans club<lb />
is about and the ideals we repre-<lb />
sent said Jim Reid, president of<lb />
the ECU Veterans Club.<lb />
The activities continued at<lb />
noon with an opportunity for<lb />
veterans and the general public to<lb />
meet each other at the student<lb />
store where the veterans served<lb />
soft drinks.<lb />
The vets provided a wine and<lb />
cheese social at Mendenhall to<lb />
further mingle with the ECU stu-<lb />
dent body.<lb />
"The veterans want to get bet-<lb />
ter aquainted with the student<lb />
body. We want to promote inner<lb />
growth within our club and not<lb />
become a club within ourselves.<lb />
We hope Veterans Awareness<lb />
Day will show the public that we<lb />
are not sterotypical 'military<lb />
men but men who have made a<lb />
decision and learned to make the<lb />
best of it said Reid.<lb />
A candlelight vigil was held at<lb />
the American Legion Hall in<lb />
honor of those soldiers still miss-<lb />
ing in action. After the vigil,<lb />
veterans club members, members<lb />
of the ECU student body, former<lb />
POW's, and other interested<lb />
groups marched three miles<lb />
around Greenville.<lb />
Two movies concerning the<lb />
ECU's SHS Insurance Rises<lb />
plight of the veteran in soceity<lb />
were shown at Hendn.x Theatre at<lb />
the finish of the evening.<lb />
Friday at 3p.m. the POW flag<lb />
will be raised at Joyner Library.<lb />
ECU is the first educational in-<lb />
stitution to ever fly the POW<lb />
flag. The flag will be flown for<lb />
the remainder of the semester.<lb />
"The plight of the veteran in<lb />
soceity has come a long way since<lb />
the Vietnam era. Things have<lb />
definitely changed. People have<lb />
more appreciation of what a<lb />
veteran is. Still, some of the<lb />
public is unaware of the veterans<lb />
point of view.<lb />
According to Reid, veterans<lb />
B CAROLYN DRISCOLL<lb />
Staff W riter<lb />
Student health centers at col-<lb />
leges across the country are ex-<lb />
periencing drastic hikes in liabili-<lb />
ty insurance rates, and ECU is no<lb />
exception.<lb />
In fact, ECU's health center<lb />
has seen its total insurance costs<lb />
increase by "at least 100 percent"<lb />
in the past year and expects an<lb />
ever greater increase during the<lb />
next year, said James McCallum,<lb />
director of Student Health Ser-<lb />
On The Inside<lb />
Announcem Classifieds Editorials. .ents2<lb /><lb />
Features<lb />
Sports<lb />
It is not the lie that passeth through the mind, but the lie that sinketh in it, that doth the hurt. Francis Bacon<lb />
vices here at ECU.<lb />
But while this increase seems to<lb />
be affecting student fees and<lb />
causing the elimination of ser-<lb />
vices on many campuses, Mc-<lb />
Callum does not foresee such<lb />
changes occuring here in the near<lb />
future.<lb />
The primary reason health<lb />
centers (as well as private prac-<lb />
tices) are seeing higher rates, ac-<lb />
cording to McCallum, is the<lb />
courts are awarding increasingly<lb />
large settlements in malpractice<lb />
suits. "Once a settlement is<lb />
made, it sets a precedent said<lb />
McCallum. The higher the set-<lb />
tlements become, "the higher the<lb />
insurance companies must raise<lb />
their fees to offset the set-<lb />
tlements<lb />
Between 1982 and 1985, ECU's<lb />
liability insurance (which protects<lb />
against malpractice suits) increas-<lb />
ed from $3,548 to $12,751. Dur-<lb />
ing that time, the Health Center<lb />
did increase its coverage from $1<lb />
million to $3 million, a change<lb />
which McCallum says accounts<lb />
for a small portion of the rate in-<lb />
crease.<lb />
When asked what changes will<lb />
be made in terms of student fees<lb />
or services, McCallum stated "I<lb />
cannot say at this point in time<lb />
He did note, however, because<lb />
"everything done here has to be<lb />
paid for by student health fees<lb />
those fees will eventually be af-<lb />
fected. He added that fees, which<lb />
were $49.50 for 1985-86, will not<lb />
be greatly affected in the upcom-<lb />
ing year.<lb />
"We don't intend to eliminate<lb />
services. I would rather seek<lb />
financing through other ways<lb />
than through the elimination of<lb />
services said McCallum.<lb />
While some colleges are deal-<lb />
ing with this situation by reduc-<lb />
ing staff, the size of the ECU<lb />
Health Center is at its highest<lb />
point in seen years.<lb />
Many colleges are trying to<lb />
cope with less students as well as<lb />
higher insurance rates, a trend<lb />
TCU appears to be bucking. Last<lb />
year, the Health Center had<lb />
53,000 patient visits, and if this<lb />
year follows the pattern (as it has<lb />
in the past five years) it will sur-<lb />
pass this mark.<lb />
, 0 m y <lb />
nave pride in their country and<lb />
take American rituals very<lb />
seriously. "It digs deep when a<lb />
veteran sees someone not paying<lb />
attention during the national an-<lb />
them, or not stopping as the flag<lb />
is raised or lowered<lb />
Reid explained veterans were<lb />
taught these customs while in the<lb />
military and that the raising and<lb />
lowering of the flag, taps being<lb />
played, and the national anthem<lb />
being sung are held close to the<lb />
veterans heart. The veteran<lb />
observes these customs with ut-<lb />
most respect.<lb />
"We know we are in a unique<lb />
situation and we hope Veterans<lb />
Awareness Day helps the public<lb />
better understand our ideas as we<lb />
learn to better understand the<lb />
public's view said Reid.<lb />
The ECU Veterans Club is<lb />
open to all students, faculty, and<lb />
staff members. The purpose of<lb />
the club is to promote the<lb />
American way of life, encourage<lb />
mature leadership, and promote<lb />
inter-branch fellowships among<lb />
the veterans of the United States<lb />

(CPS) Women may hae a<lb />
hard time getting a job if their<lb />
resumes evince strong feminist<lb />
feelings or refer to school pro-<lb />
jects that a prospective employer<lb />
may see as meaning they could<lb />
cause "trouble" on the job. a<lb />
new study b two professors sug-<lb />
gests<lb />
Em plovers surveyed by<lb />
Michael Hitt of Texas ,V1 and<lb />
William Zikmund of Oklahoma<lb />
State seemed especially reluctant<lb />
OBDM<lb />
to hire female students who had<lb />
done studies of job discrimina-<lb />
tion.<lb />
But corporate preferences for<lb />
male applicants in general seem<lb />
to be fading, Hitt adds.<lb />
Other job placement officials,<lb />
however, question Hitt and Zik-<lb />
mund's study, and note<lb />
"political" references on a<lb />
usume are always a risk.<lb />
"I am not sure if (discrimina-<lb />
tion) is specific to women's<lb />
groups says Joe Santos, a<lb />
placement officer at Miami of<lb />
Ohio.<lb />
Employers in general seem to<lb />
respond less positively "to social<lb />
stands of any kind" on resumes,<lb />
he observes.<lb />
Hitt and Zikmund's study sug-<lb />
gests companies appear anxious<lb />
to respond to feminist applicants<lb />
with appropriate care, if not with<lb />
jobs.<lb />
"The study shows companies<lb />
Students Establish Identity<lb />

responding to feminists Hitt<lb />
says.<lb />
Hitt and Zikmund sent the<lb />
resumes of two women to some<lb />
200 companies.<lb />
Hitt and Zikmund were most<lb />
intrigued by firms' replies to the<lb />
resumes that mentioned the job<lb />
discrimination thesis, but were<lb />
identified only by the applicant's<lb />
initials.<lb />
Continued From Page 1.<lb />
The key to provoking student<lb />
activism, he says, is to find issues<lb />
:hat affect students directly, and<lb />
ones about which they feel they<lb />
can influence the outcome.<lb />
McClure attributes student in-<lb />
terest in South African apartheid<lb />
to students realizing they can in-<lb />
fluence college holdings in com-<lb />
panies doing business with the<lb />
Pretoria government.<lb />
"I don't disagree with" the no-<lb />
tion that students are not as<lb />
politically passive a.s some critics<lb />
suggest, says Kenneth Green of<lb />
UCLA, which co-sponsors with<lb />
the American Council on Educa-<lb />
tion an annual survey of some<lb />
200,000 freshmen nationwide.<lb />
Most observers who call col-<lb />
legians apathetic, in fact, cite the<lb />
UCLA study, which, among<lb />
other discoveries, has found<lb />
freshmen becoming ever more<lb />
materialistic in their life goals.<lb />
The findings recently convinc-<lb />
ed a group of college presidents<lb />
to resolve to make "community<lb />
service" a graduation require-<lb />
ment. The group hoped to end<lb />
students' "preoccupation" with<lb />
career and material goals.<lb />
But a number of other studies,<lb />
most recently from Mount Hood<lb />
College in Maryland, documents<lb />
that student attitudes generally<lb />
change and become less egocen-<lb />
tric during the course of college.<lb />
And many of the other impres-<lb />
sions of students as overly<lb />
materialistic are derived from<lb />
studies done at "private elitist<lb />
schools in the East McClure<lb />
contends.<lb />
McClure's study, done at a<lb />
midwestern state school, may be<lb />
more representative of student at-<lb />
titudes nationwide, he says.<lb />
His students' career aspira-<lb />
tions, moreover, have more to do<lb />
with "trying to establish an iden-<lb />
tity in a chaotic world McClure<lb />
concludes. He believes becoming<lb />
a professional is a way of exerting<lb />
control over oneself in a world<lb />
frequently perceived as out of<lb />
control.<lb />
"Some say it's greed, while<lb />
others say it's uncertainty about<lb />
the future Green says of stu-<lb />
dent career aspirations.<lb />
"When I have asked a college<lb />
audience 'how many of you know<lb />
people who have lost their job9' I<lb />
see a sea of hands Green adds.<lb />
This may be why "we see a lot<lb />
of portfolio-building behavior"<lb />
among college students, he<lb />
speculates.<lb />

SGA Elections<lb />
Dirty Tricks And Foul Play<lb />
Tentative congratulations are die<lb />
Steve Cunanan and Tony Jackson<lb />
on their victories for SGA Presidert<lb />
and Vice-President respectively.<lb />
Their races were hotly contestad<lb />
and each of the victors deserves ai<lb />
opportunity to savor his victory,<lb />
hough recounts have been re-<lb />
quested<lb />
But there were things which took<lb />
place during the campaign tha<lb />
Nhould not be forgotten right away.<lb />
No, these things must be hashed oil<lb />
and discussed.<lb />
The campaign that has just<lb />
recently been concluded was net<lb />
completely unlike past campaign<lb />
that have taken place on this cam-<lb />
pus. It was a dirty, malicious,<lb />
mudsiinging and, in some respects,<lb />
even racist campaign from start to<lb />
finish.<lb />
Certainly I do not mean to cast<lb />
aspersio- or place blame on the<lb />
shouidc of the candidates involv-<lb />
ed in this election. I believe all the<lb />
candidates to be honorable men<lb />
Yet when those working in their<lb />
campaigns spread malicious<lb />
falsehoods and rip down the posters<lb />
of their opponents they go too far.<lb />
It would be infinitely easier fa<lb />
me if I could say that wrong-doing<lb />
was to be found in equal measures<lb />
on both sides of this election. Butl<lb />
cannot.<lb />
The graphic above which I<lb />
observed two Cunanan Walker<lb />
campaign workers displaying en<lb />
their campaign poster is illustrative<lb />
of just some of the abuses that I am<lb />
speaking about.<lb />
In addition, it must be frankly<lb />
stated that the fact that<lb />
Cunanan Walker posters<lb />
dramatically outnumbered<lb />
Tomasic Jackson posters was not a<lb />
tesult o' any slothfulness on the<lb />
part of the latter two candidates. It<lb />
was a result of the fact, as many<lb />
witnesses have reported, that tre<lb />
I omasic Jackson signs were simply<lb />
ripped down by overzealoiB<lb />
Cunanan Walker campaign<lb />
v. .M kerv<lb />
Allegations have been made to<lb />
the effect that TomasicJackscn<lb />
kers were guilty of the same,<lb />
but this newspaper can find no<lb />
evidence of it.<lb />
A letter was written to this editor<lb />
alleging that Anthony Jackson had<lb />
threatened to burn down The East<lb />
Carolinian at a Media Board hear-<lb />
ing. Upon investigation, that<lb />
allegation proved to be patently un-<lb />
true. Anthony Jackson was net<lb />
even at the hearing at which it was<lb />
alleged that he made the comments<lb />
cited above, according to several<lb />
witnesses. Because this newspapo-<lb />
can be held liable for printing such<lb />
ungrounded allegations, we refusal<lb />
to run that letter.<lb />
Allegations were also made ii<lb />
this office that Chris Tomasic had<lb />
fired a Pirate Walk employee<lb />
because he was homosexual. Upon<lb />
investigation that too proved to be<lb />
false.<lb />
Mr. Tomasic, in his capacity as<lb />
SGA Vice-President did not have<lb />
the power to fire anyone frorr<lb />
Pirate Walk. The person in ques-<lb />
tion was not, in fact, fired<lb />
Moreover, Mr. Tomasic, according<lb />
to Kurt Bubenhofer, Director cf<lb />
Pirate Walk, never mentioned cr<lb />
suggested that the person in ques-<lb />
tion be fired.<lb />
Lastly, of course, there is the, by<lb />
now infamous charge that Tomasic<lb />
is Neanderthal. It is said that re<lb />
beat up on the Treasurer of the<lb />
SGA, Tony Braswell unjustly and<lb />
without due provocation. That is<lb />
what the graphic featured above<lb />
refers to.<lb />
There is no way to know precisely<lb />
what happened the night that the<lb />
altercation between Tomasic and<lb />
Braswell occured. Suffice it to say-<lb />
that Tomasic was not the man who<lb />
weilded the baseball bat accordir<lb />
to Greenville Police Departmert<lb />
reports.<lb />
That there were even commens<lb />
made to the effect that Tomasic's<lb />
campaign was made up of<lb />
"niggers" and "faggots" is only<lb />
hearsay. 1 hat is not the main issue<lb />
It is inflammatory to even mention<lb />
such matters I suppose,<lb />
It is not enough to simply decry<lb />
dirty campaign tactics as though<lb />
they occured equally on both sides.<lb />
For they did not.<lb />
This editorial will be called par-<lb />
tisan, biased and unfair I imagine<lb />
In fact, folks who participated in<lb />
the Cunanan Walker campaign wil<lb />
probably think of it as just plain<lb />
mean.<lb />
But what was done to Chre<lb />
Tomasic and Anthony Jackson was<lb />
mean. And if justice is to be done<lb />
those who are responsible for that<lb />
meanness must be held accoun-<lb />
table.<lb />
This newspaper has no desire to<lb />
change the election results. We<lb />
believe that Steve Cunanan and<lb />
Tony Jackson are honorable men<lb />
They will represent our school well.<lb />
But Chris Tomasic and Tony<lb />
Jackson deserve better than they<lb />
got. They deserve apologies and<lb />
they deserve to have their names<lb />
cleared.<lb />
Most of all another election<lb />
should never be run like the ore<lb />
that was just finished. The students<lb />
at this university deserve better. It is<lb />
not enough for a person to simply<lb />
say that they cannot contrd<lb />
overzealous campaign workers. At<lb />
some point a candidate must tale<lb />
responsibility for what those work-<lb />
ing for him do in his name.<lb />
Three years ago a referendum<lb />
was held on establishing a Pubic<lb />
Interest Research Group on this<lb />
campus and the same tactics woe<lb />
employed by those who opposed<lb />
the establishment of the PIRG<lb />
Last year similar tactics were<lb />
employed in the race for SGA presi-<lb />
dent. And in years past the same<lb />
sort of thing has happened from<lb />
time to time.<lb />
Yes it is time to speak the truth<lb />

I could not help but chuckle to<lb />
myself during the last three v.eekv<lb />
over press reports of the spirited and<lb />
recently destructive and nastv<lb />
behavior of N.C. State students and<lb />
followers. This all coming after each<lb />
of their NCAA basketball tourna<lb />

You see what I find so amusing is<lb />
that it was only a few months ago that<lb />
after the East Carolina University vs<lb />
N.C. State University football game<lb />
in Raleigh, certain pompous members<lb />
of the N.C. State University ad-<lb />
ministration including Chancellor<lb />
Poulton, publicly and through the<lb />
media, chastised and lambasted E( I<lb />
and the small number of spirited<lb />
students involved, for their victory<lb />
celebration behavior. Their big crime.<lb />
pushing over a small section of a 3<lb />
foot high end zone retaining fence.<lb />
Boy, you would have thought it was<lb />
an unpardonable sin from the NC M<lb />
administration's reaction.<lb />
But wait! What do we hear t;<lb />
the same administration after four<lb />
Wild Hillsborough Street victory par-<lb />
ties culminating with last Friday's<lb />
four injured Raleigh police officers.<lb />
34 arrests and property damage1 <lb />
a word, not one solitary word<lb />
In the future 1 suggest that<lb />
Chancellor Poulton and his other of-<lb />
ficials clean up their own act before<lb />
passing judgement on other state in-<lb />

Now last but not least. If they warn<lb />
to threaten to cancel the very<lb />
lucrative ECU vs NCSU football<lb />

they allegedlv did, maybe they ought<lb />
to also consider the following; decline<lb />

Jerry Falwell's Majority<lb />
TtM Mm KaevMic<lb />
Now Jerry's got a new sales pitch. To<lb />
counteract the public's impressive<lb />
distaste for him ("The highest negatives<lb />
of anybody except Khomeini says one<lb />
Republican pollster), Falwell announced<lb />
in January that the Moral Majority was<lb />
changing its name to the Liberty Federa-<lb />
tion. The Liberty Federation will have a<lb />
political and education arm the Liber-<lb />
ty Alliance and will publish i's own<lb />
newspaper, the Liberty Report.<lb />
Last year, Falwell changed the name<lb />
of his Liberty Baptist College to Libertv<lb />
University. The school is located on<lb />
Liberty Mountain outside Lynchburg,<lb />
Va which Falwell now refers to as the<lb />
town of Liberty. It is not known what<lb />
the residents of Lynchburg think of<lb />
Falwell's decision to change the name of<lb />
their town. But if they remember<lb />
anything about the history of the<lb />
political groups using the name "Liber-<lb />
ty they will ask the reverend to please<lb />
shut up.<lb />
In 1934, some of the nation's<lb />
millionaires created the American Liber-<lb />
ty League. The idea for the league<lb />
originated with R.M. Carpenter, a<lb />
retired vice president of DuPont. Sub-<lb />
sidized with millions of dollars from its<lb />
members, the Liberty League engaged in<lb />
a massive public-relations campaign,<lb />
churning out pamphlets, canned news<lb />
stories, press releases and radio speeches<lb />
reporting that Franklin Roosevelt's New<lb />
Deal was part of a worldwide Marxist<lb />
conspiracy. By 1936, Republican<lb />
presidential nominee Alf Landon<lb />
described the league's endorsement as a<lb />
"kiss of death New York Times col-<lb />
umnist Arthur Krock wrote that the<lb />
chairman of the Republican Party<lb />
"would have walked a mile out of his<lb />
way rather than be seen in the company<lb />
of a Liberty Leaguer<lb />
The Liberty or Death Committee,<lb />
formed in Freeport, N.Y on July 4,<lb />
1962, carried on this tradition. The com-<lb />
mittee's main objective was to require<lb />
prayer in the public schools, claiming<lb />
that "the day the Supreme Court took<lb />
God out of the schools, they ruled in<lb />
favor of obscenity<lb />
The Liberty Legion was established in<lb />
the mid-1960s to get nd of all intellec-<lb />
tuals, since "the word intellectual is a<lb />
synonym for the word athiest and the<lb />
words communism and Marxism<lb />
aresynonyms for intellectualism and<lb />
atheism In 1968, it changed its name-<lb />
to the Liberty Party.<lb />
That same year, retired right-wing<lb />
general Edwin Walker created the Liber-<lb />
tv Network to compete with the nation's<lb />
leftist newspapers and TV networks.<lb />
Not much else is known about the Liber-<lb />
tv Network: When Walker discussed it,<lb />
few people could make much sense of<lb />
what he was saying. "Our efforts he<lb />
explained, "will extend for all<lb />
Americans, to 1968 and 1976 very-<lb />
significant years and on up to 1000<lb />
A.D Walker said the network would<lb />
investigate the Kennedy assassination.<lb />
Walker became obsessed with the case<lb />
after the Warren Commission alleged<lb />
that Lee Harvey Oswald unsuccessfully<lb />
tried to assassinate Walker just before<lb />
the Kennedy assassination. The new in-<lb />
vestigation, said Walker, should focus<lb />
on "the fact that Oswald knew Rubens-<lb />
tein and Rubenstein knew Oswald<lb />
"Do you mean Jack Ruby?" a<lb />
reporter asked.<lb />
"1 mean Rubenstein Walker<lb />
replied. "You can call him anything you<lb />
want<lb />
Last year was dififcult for Jerry<lb />
Falwell. On May 3 he wrote to me, say-<lb />
ing he had "absolutely failed to raise the<lb />
money necessary to keep the Moral Ma-<lb />
jority moving ahead Repeatedly-I am<lb />
asking myself and others-where we are<lb />
failing? Have we won so many moral<lb />
battles that our friends think the major<lb />
conflict is over?<lb />
"Yes we are winning the battle against<lb />
the efforts of militant<lb />
homosexualsThe porn kings are now<lb />
losing money heavilyBut now we<lb />
face the possibility of losing the most<lb />
important battle of allIf this country<lb />

the communist nuclear weapons, then<lb />
sex and violence on television will<lb />
become a moot issueI have no inten-<lb />
tions of allowing Tip O'Neill and Jim<lb />

children in communist slaverv or<lb />
worse<lb />
I didn't reply, and Jerry contacted me<lb />
again in August, this time via a United<lb />
Express Gram, whatever that is.<lb />
"Moments ago I was told my family and<lb />
home would be blown up today<lb />
Jerry informed me. "Militant homosex-<lb />
uals, pornography peddlers and abor-<lb />
tionists have often threatened our<lb />
livesBut since my return from South<lb />
Africa, communist terrorists are openly<lb />
threatening to kill me and my tmily<lb />
because of my campaign to stop the<lb />
Soviet Union from taking over the vital<lb />
minerals, strategic sea lanes and naval<lb />
based of South Africa.<lb />
"I am willing to confront the death<lb />
threats, the twisted and biased media<lb />
coverage but only if I have the help,<lb />
prayers and support of my friends I<lb />
must ask you to immediately send an<lb />
emergency gift of $100, $50, $25<lb />
Again, I didn't respond. Jerry sent me<lb />
a more desperate letter less than a week<lb />
later: "If I cannot find the support of<lb />
friends like you I'm afraid we are in<lb />
serious trouble. And pornographers,<lb />
militant gays, abortionists and liberals<lb />
will continue to lead this country<lb />
straight down the path of moral decay<lb />
Then there's the Liberty Lobby, based<lb />
on Capitol Hill and doing well in the age<lb />
of Reagan. Its orientation was sum-<lb />
marized by its founder, Willis Carto,<lb />
when he wrote to an association:<lb />

The Firm, rock n roll oldest<lb />

music listeners that they're no; a<lb />
band that stands tall one sear and<lb />

With their second album.<lb />
Mean Business, Jimmy Page and<lb />
The Firm have established that<lb />
they really do mean business, and<lb />
that they are one of the top per-<lb />

Page, a former Yard Bird and<lb />

parts oi the album intertwine i<lb />

reminiscent of the ed Zeppelin 1<lb />

Influences from Page's years<lb />
with Eric Clapton can be found<lb />
in "Cadillac another oi the<lb />

The Trip To Bountiful is a<lb />
movie about life, death, and just<lb />
about everything in between. It is<lb />
about the importance of place<lb />
and family about home, and<lb />
the need to stay in touch with<lb />
home.<lb />
The movie is set in 1947 in the<lb />
inland coastal region of Texas,<lb />
yet the themes presented are<lb />
timeless ones. It could just as<lb />
easily be set in modern-day<lb />
Greenville or in eighteenth cen-<lb />

The main character in the film<lb />
is Carrie Watts, played by<lb />
Geraldine Page. Like Dorothy in<lb />
The Wizard of Oz, she "just<lb />

Carrie is Bountiful, Texas.<lb />
Carrie is an elderly woman<lb />

lives with her son, Ludie, and his<lb />

generational differences and Car<lb />
rie's longing to return to Boun-<lb />

bags, pension check and all, and<lb />
move back to Bountiful.<lb />

Max has been away on tour for<lb />

he returns. Living in romantic<lb />
bliss, Walter and Anna have seen<lb />
their love for each other grow. In<lb />
fact, the conservative Walter<lb />
wants to take the next step, but<lb />
Anna is not ready to marry again.<lb />
She's perfectly happy to stay with<lb />
Walter without any more strings<lb />
attached.<lb />
Suddenly, Max returns. He's<lb />
back and they're out - out of the<lb />
apartment, almost out of money<lb />
and into a frantic search for a<lb />
roof over their heads.<lb />
Walter hopes this rush to find a<lb />
home could give he and Anna the<lb />
opportunity to make a further<lb />
commitment to each other,<lb />
cementing their relationship and<lb />
lessening the chance that Max<lb />
could sweep her off her feet<lb />

Great foundations are not built<lb />

Walter's real estate friend tips<lb />

"that will make people do almost<lb />

They can't resist it<lb />
Except for a few minor repairs,<lb />
the house seems to be in order.<lb />
Only after Walter gallantly car-<lb />
ries Anna over the threshold does<lb />
the front door fall off.<lb />
Their dream house starts to fall<lb />
apart and so does their relation-<lb />
ship. They have to rebuild both.<lb />
Will they someday live happily<lb />
ever after?<lb />
As director Richard Benjamin<lb />
says, "If you can live through<lb />
this, keeping your sanity and<lb />
your sense of humor, you can live<lb />
through marriage<lb />
The Money Pit is the fourth film<lb />
directed by Benjamin, whose<lb />
talent as an actor have made him<lb />
a star in films, television and the<lb />
theatre. The first film he<lb />
directed, My Favorite Year,<lb />
clearly established his directing<lb />
talent. He followed that with the<lb />
sensitive, romantic drama Racing<lb />
with the Moon, and the period<lb />
action-comedy City Heat with<lb />
Clint Eastwood and Burt<lb />

"For me says Benjamin,<lb />

The comedy is filled with<lb />

Some sequences were shot with as<lb />
many as six cameras to capture<lb />
action that could only be staged<lb />

Steven Spielberg was first at-<lb />

No matter what the score, no<lb />
matter who the opponent is, ECU<lb />
will always be fully supported as<lb />
long as the Pirate cheerleaders<lb />
are on hand.<lb />
The ECU cheerleading squad,<lb />
coached by Pam Davis, is con-<lb />
stantly backing ECU athletics.<lb />
The team took 13th place in na-<lb />
tional competition and is eagerly<lb />
looking for interested students.<lb />
Coach Pam Davis stressed the<lb />
need for more male cheerleaders.<lb />
"The one thing I would like to<lb />
get across is male cheerleading<lb />
Davis said. "We really want to<lb />
emphasize how important men<lb />
are (to the program). It's a<lb />
masculine thing to do. If you've<lb />
got good guys, you can build a<lb />
better team<lb />
"We have an ex-football<lb />
player on the team and another<lb />
one is trying out Davis added.<lb />
"Girls are important too, of<lb />
course it's easier to get girls,<lb />
they've had high school ex-<lb />
perience<lb />
Whether it is a guy or a girl, the<lb />
cheerleaders are having tryouts<lb />
for interested men or women.<lb />
Beginning next Tues. Apr. 1 at 5<lb />
pm in room 142 Minges Col-<lb />
iseum, there will be an organiza-<lb />
tional meeting. At the meeting,<lb />
Davis will discuss what is re-<lb />
quired along with some<lb />
background information on the<lb />
team. Clinics will be held that<lb />
week with tryouts being held on<lb />
Tues. Apr. 8 (the time will be an-<lb />
nounced).<lb />
Now would be a super time to<lb />
get involved with the<lb />
cheerleaders, according to Davis.<lb />
"We finished 13th in the na-<lb />
tion. It was a super season<lb />
Davis acknowledged. "We got<lb />
recognition in Memphis and pats<lb />
on the back all year<lb />
The Pirate squad did have<lb />
some tough competition in Mem-<lb />
phis. Such schools as N.( . State<lb />
(national champs this year).<lb />
Auburn, Ole Miss, Nebraska.<lb />
LSU and Penn State were some<lb />
top names that were competing<lb />
However, the Bucs withstood<lb />
competition and fared rather well<lb />
in all three events cheer, fight<lb />
song and the side-line competi-<lb />
tion.<lb />
"We finished in the finals of<lb />
all three and took home the most-<lb />
improved award Davis said<lb />
happily. "We were in the top-ten<lb />
of everything we felt good<lb />
about that<lb />
All the success is due to hard<lb />
work. The squad practices every-<lb />
day with stringent workouts. The<lb />
guys are in the weight room three<lb />
times a week while the ladies<lb />
spend two days a week on the<lb />
weights. Also, the men must run<lb />
a seven-minute mile while the<lb />
women must clock in under the<lb />
eight-minute mark.<lb />
Davis had some basic priorities<lb />
the team. They are: 1) to sup-<lb />
port the teams, no matter what<lb />
and 2) to go (and compete) to the<lb />
ional championship. She also<lb />
said that the team is open to all<lb />
ggestions and that they did not<lb />
discourage anyone.<lb />
"We feel it will be a heckuva<lb />
ear tor us added Davis.<lb />
ECU cheerleader Tim<lb />
Rochester had nothing but<lb />
positive thoughts about his<lb />
cheerleading experience.<lb />
"It's fun. It's always a com-<lb />
petition we compete every<lb />
game Rochester said. "It's a<lb />
sport. 1 work, even more at this<lb />
than other sports. I do it in spare<lb />
time and am always practicing<lb />

Sophomore Linda Gillis led the<lb />
way at the NCSU Invitational<lb />
with a first place effort in the<lb />
100-meter run. Her time in the<lb />
event was 12.0 seconds. Lisa<lb />
Poteat also contributed with a<lb />
strong second-place finish in the<lb />
400-meter run with a time of 60.0<lb />

With a combined effort, the<lb />
women's team placed second in<lb />
the 400 x 100 relav with a clock<lb />
ing of 48.3 seconds. Javelin<lb />
thrower Wendy Trone finished<lb />
second in the Georgia Relavs with<lb />
a throw of 138 feet.<lb />
