Assembly has passed a bill to<lb />
raise the drinking age to 21 for<lb />
both the purchase and consump-<lb />
tion of beer and wine by October<lb />
1, 1986. But wait, the storv gets<lb />
better.<lb />
It seems the U.S. Congress and<lb />
other Washington bigwigs passed<lb />
legislation telling states to raise<lb />
the legal drinking age to 21 or<lb />
lose federal highwav funds �<lb />
almost five percent.<lb />
But don't feel too bad, though.<lb />
North Carolina officials weren't<lb />
happy with this federal blackmail<lb />
and they made several provisions<lb />
to look after the students. One of<lb />
the provisions states that if a<lb />
19-or 20-year old is caught with<lb />
beer or wine after the law is pass-<lb />
ed, he or she cannot be fined<lb />
more than $25. While it will still<lb />

in the state, ECU gave new head<lb />
coach Art Baker a 33-14 victory<lb />
in a game in which the Pirates<lb />
outplayed the Wolf pack in every<lb />
area.<lb />
ECU enjoyed their largest vic-<lb />
tory margin in the history of the<lb />
series between the two schools as<lb />
58,300 people watched Baker's<lb />
Pirates outplay their opponents<lb />
from the ACC.<lb />
N.C. State opened the scoring<lb />
in the first period, driving 78<lb />
yards in 15 plays. An Eric-<lb />
Kramer pass to Phil Brothers<lb />
covered the final seven yards for<lb />
the touchdown. Mike Cofer con-<lb />
verted on the extra point to give<lb />
State a 7-0 lead with 5:18 remain-<lb />
ing in the opening quarter.<lb />
Special team play turned the<lb />
momentum back to ECU's favor<lb />
as Ellis Dillahunt broke through<lb />
to block a Craig Salmon punt in<lb />
the end one. Dillahunt also<lb />
recovered the ball to give the<lb />
Pirates' their first points of the<lb />
contest. Jeff Heath's conversion<lb />
was good to tie the score at 7-7,<lb />
The Pirate defense then took<lb />
over, forcing the Wolfpack to<lb />
punt after three plavs. After the<lb />
State punt, EC L" took the ball at<lb />
their own 36. From there, ECU<lb />
went 64 vards in 11 plavs to take<lb />

pionship. Well, I want to take a<lb />
little of that Wolfpack spirit to<lb />
Washington this fall and win one<lb />
for America Reagan said.<lb />
The President said the U.S. has<lb />
never been stronger or<lb />
economically as vital as it is now.<lb />
He added. "If 1 have one piece ot<lb />
advice for you, it's dare to dream<lb />
big dreams. Follow your star.<lb />
"Maybe some of you dream of<lb />
striking out on your own some-<lb />
day as enterpreneurs, starting<lb />
your own business or joining a<lb />
new start-up venture with ex-<lb />
citing ideas. There's never been a<lb />
better time he said.<lb />
Reagan then departed from his<lb />
prepaied speech with a story<lb />
about a young concert pianist<lb />
who overcame her arthritis and<lb />
started a successful business<lb />
"Her friends encouraged her to<lb />
do what she did best � baking<lb />
brownies. So, she started a<lb />
business selling gourmet<lb />
brownies to restaurants and<lb />
hotels � last year she made over<lb />
a million dollars he said.<lb />
Reagan said that there will<lb />
always be people who say "it<lb />
can't be done But he added.<lb />
"Just remind them that this is<lb />
America, and that there are no<lb />
limits except those that we put on<lb />
ourselves<lb />
In closing. Reagan borrowed a<lb />
line from the recent movie "Back<lb />
to the Future "Where we're<lb />
going we don't need any roads.<lb />
Just an open heart and trusting<lb />
soul to map the way. and those<lb />
standard American qualities of<lb />
hard work, determination, and<lb />
faith in the loving God who has<lb />
blessed our land<lb />
A public address system car-<lb />
ried Reagan's speech to the<lb />
crowd outside the Coliseum.<lb />
There, about 200 people shouting<lb />
"Freedom Yes � Apartheid No"<lb />
protested against Reagan's<lb />
policies toward white-minority<lb />
ruled South Africa.<lb />
Others were less critical of<lb />
Reagan. Lt. Governor Bob Jor-<lb />
dan said, "President Reagan is a<lb />
remarkable individual; people<lb />
listen when he talks. He spoke<lb />
about a lot of the positives of his<lb />
tax reform plan. But, he didn't<lb />
mention any of the negatives we<lb />
face, such as the federal defecit<lb />
U.S. Sanctions Against South Africa Ineffective<lb />

"U.S. sanctions against South<lb />
Africa will not have any effect on<lb />
that country to end the apartheid<lb />
system said ECU economics<lb />
professor Brian Dollery.<lb />
According to Dollery,<lb />
American economic investments<lb />
only constitute 10 percent, while<lb />
European investments are still<lb />
only marginal. However, South<lb />
African investments within their<lb />
own country accounts for two-<lb />
thirds of total investments. Even<lb />
if the U.S. were to pull its in-<lb />
vestments out, the South African<lb />
government would buy up plants<lb />
and equipment and hire more<lb />
people, said Dollery.<lb />
"They are very<lb />
self-sufficient he continued.<lb />
'The white South African<lb />
government is very powerful.<lb />
They are highly trained and well<lb />
supplied. They'll keep right on<lb />
fighting regardless of sanctions.<lb />
So sanctions would be like trying<lb />
to put out a raging fire with a<lb />
droplet of water<lb />
If anything, it will hurt the<lb />
blacks who work there in South<lb />
Africa. Already, there is a 50-55<lb />
percent black unemployment<lb />
rate. If major industries such as<lb />
General Motors or Ford Motor<lb />
Company pulled out. Blacks<lb />
would lose their jobs to whites.<lb />
Then the government would buy<lb />
up the businesses. The situation<lb />
would there just get worse. All<lb />
this is unnecessary, says Dollery.<lb />
The Conventional Liberal<lb />
Perception and the Neo-Marxist<lb />
economic view are the two<lb />
schools of economic thought that<lb />
Dollery said could be offered as<lb />
an alternative.<lb />
The Neo-Mar.xists' viewpoint is<lb />
the philosophy to which most<lb />
white South Africans ascribe.<lb />
The economic growth stimulates<lb />
the white power and further en-<lb />
trenches the whites within the<lb />
government. The less foreign in-<lb />
vestments there is the weaker the<lb />
white power.<lb />
However, according to<lb />
Dollery, the other school of<lb />
thought is a more realistic and ra-<lb />
tional view. Dollery explained.<lb />
"The conventional liberal<lb />
perception says that apartheid in-<lb />
hibits economic growth. There<lb />
must be upward mobility within<lb />
the economic and social structure<lb />
for the economy to grow and<lb />
apartheid simplv stands in the<lb />
way More investments and<lb />
more economic growth would<lb />
force apartheid to dissolve, while<lb />
less investment would throw<lb />
things in reverse, said Dollery.<lb />
So the fighting will continue in<lb />
spite of sanctions.<lb />
Other alternatives are<lb />
boycotts, such as the sports<lb />
boycott in Europe. All team con-<lb />
nections in Europe have been<lb />
severed for cricket and rugby.<lb />
As for Jerry Falwell's position<lb />
in all of this, Dollery says that the<lb />
white South African government<lb />
likes him. However, he is pulling<lb />
figures and statistics out of his<lb />
head that are just not there.<lb />

State University and an official State basketball jersey. Reagan<lb />
came to the NCSU campus pitching his tax reform program.<lb />
Reagan gave a 24 minute speech which was intenipted by applause<lb />
27 times.<lb />

Progress is continuing toward<lb />
the implementation of the<lb />
automated circulation system and<lb />
on-line catalogue for Joyner<lb />
Library and the Health Sciences<lb />
Library, said Dr. Ruth Katz,<lb />
director of Academic Library<lb />
Services.<lb />
"No one is more anxious than<lb />
we are to have this system opera-<lb />
tional Katz added.<lb />
During the 1984-85 academic<lb />
year, a Data General S280 com-<lb />
puter was purchased and installed<lb />
in the Brody Building computer<lb />
room. This computer will<lb />
manage the data base for the<lb />
automated circulation system and<lb />
on-line catalogue, as well as other<lb />
subsystems that will eventually be<lb />
added.<lb />
Currently, all of the system<lb />
software for the on-line circula-<lb />
tion system has been loaded and<lb />
Joyner-HSL bibliographic<lb />
records are presently being load-<lb />
ed.<lb />
"We're only a semester behind<lb />
schedule � that's pretty good<lb />
when you consider the enormous<lb />
amount of information we have<lb />
to deal with Katz said. "We<lb />
were told it will take 256 days just<lb />
to load the bibliographic<lb />
records she added.<lb />
Funds to establish a library-<lb />
network for the 16 schools in the<lb />
UNC system were recently ap-<lb />
propriated by the state<lb />
legislature. All of the universities<lb />
will be receiving money during<lb />
the 1985-87 biennium to establish<lb />
systens similar to the one being<lb />
implemented at ECU.<lb />
"ECU and UNC Charlotte are<lb />
about a year and a half ahead of<lb />
the other schools in the UNC<lb />
system said Katz. "We moved<lb />
ahead of the others by using<lb />
funds from our regular budget<lb />
she added.<lb />
ECU will use the funds<lb />
allocated by the state to expand<lb />
the capacity of the computer and<lb />
to purchase needed terminal,<lb />
printer and work stations.<lb />
"We also plan to purchase a<lb />
microcomputer backup system<lb />
for the on-line circulation system.<lb />
Then if the main computer goes<lb />
down, we'll still be able to serve<lb />
our users Katz said.<lb />
Katz added that most of the<lb />
equipment isn't visible now, but<lb />
Joyner Library, the Music-<lb />
Library and the Health Sciences<lb />
Library are connected by cable to<lb />
each other and to the Computer<lb />
and Information System in<lb />
Austin Building.<lb />
"We feel very confident that<lb />
we've picked one of the best<lb />
systems available and that<lb />
everyone will be pleased "Katz said.<lb />

tions will be strictly enforced on<lb />
the ECU campus, according to<lb />
Joseph H. Calder. Director o<lb />
Public Safety. "Idcaly, we would<lb />
have voluntary cooperation<lb />

According to ECU traffic<lb />
regulations skateboards are pro-<lb />
hibited from campus, and have<lb />
been tor a number oi years.<lb />
"This year we have seen more<lb />
skateboards than in previous<lb />
years said Calder. "We don't<lb />
Hist want to collect fines. We<lb />
would rather have cooperation.<lb />
We don't intend to take am ac<lb />
tion unless you are a habititual<lb />
offender he said.<lb />
Skateboards were prohibited<lb />

cideni that occured at the Music<lb />
Building student lost control<lb />
oi his skateboard and it struck<lb />
another student in the back, put-<lb />
ting her into the hosipital for<lb />
three months.<lb />
Public Safety officers are gome<lb />
to continue to ticket bicycle<lb />
riders' violating safet) rules,<lb />
C alder said, because so main<lb />
students are riding on sidewalks<lb />
and riding on one-way streets the<lb />
wrong way.<lb />
State law maintains that<lb />
bicycles are considered to be the<lb />
same as motor vehicles and sub-<lb />
ject to the same rules and regula-<lb />
tions of motor vechicles. Also,<lb />
bicycles, and their riders, are sub-<lb />
ject to the same penelties and<lb />
fines of motor vehicles according<lb />
to Calder.<lb />
"There are more bicycle ac-<lb />
cidents than any other type of ac-<lb />
cident on campus. We haven't<lb />
had a year � and 1 have been<lb />
here sixteen years � when there<lb />
has not ben a serious bicycle ac-<lb />
cident said Calder.<lb />
"The majority of the time it is<lb />
the bicycle rider who is at fault,<lb />
but not always. If you do ride a<lb />
bicycle, you should ride defen-<lb />
sively. Especially if you are riding<lb />
your bicycle down College Hill<lb />
Drive. You (the bicyclist) should<lb />
really watch your speed and<lb />
watch out for cars coming in and<lb />
out of the parking lots.<lb />

They came together on a hot<lb />
afternoon in Raleigh, howling and<lb />
clawing at each other like wild<lb />
beasts in heat.<lb />
Under an azure Carolina sky, the<lb />
fierceness of their struggle brought<lb />
tears to the eyes of 40,000 God-<lb />
fearing fans.<lb />
They were twenty-two men who<lb />
were somehow more than men.<lb />
They were giants, idols, titans<lb />
Behemoths.<lb />
They stood for everything Good<lb />
and True and Right in the<lb />
American spirit.<lb />
Because they had guts.<lb />
And they yearned for the<lb />
Ultimate Glory, the Great Prize<lb />
the Final Fruits of a long and<lb />
viscious campaign.<lb />
Victory in the season opener- the<lb />
adulation of wealthy fans and the<lb />
possibility of being spotted by a<lb />
professional scout. -<lb />
They were hungry for it. They<lb />
were thirsty. For five long weeks,<lb />
from the first till the end of August<lb />
they had struggled and sweated in<lb />
preparation for this moment of<lb />
truth <lb />
and when dusk cast its murks-<lb />
shadows upon the turf in Carter-<lb />
Finley Stadium on that fateful<lb />
Saturday night in September, they<lb />
were ready.<lb />
To seize the Final Fruit.<lb />
They could almost taste it. The<lb />
smell was stronger than a ton of<lb />
rotten mangoes. Their nerves burn-<lb />
ed hke open sores on a dog's neck.<lb />
White nuckles. Wild eyes. Strange<lb />
fluid welled up in their throats, with<lb />
a taste far sharper than bile.<lb />
Behemoths.<lb />
Those who went early said the<lb />
pre-game tension was almost<lb />
unbearable. By 7:30, many fans<lb />
were weeping openly, for no ap-<lb />
parent reason. Others wrung their<lb />
hands or gnawed on the necks of<lb />
pop bottles, trying to stay calm.<lb />
Many fist-fights were reported in<lb />
the public urinals. Nervous<lb />
policemen roamed up and down the<lb />
aisles, confiscating alchoholic<lb />
beverages, and occasionally grappl-<lb />
ing with drunkards and dodging<lb />
empty fifths of Jim Beam. Gangs of<lb />
Seconol-crazed sophomores rushed<lb />
the fence and ripped it from its<lb />
hinges.<lb />
Meanwhile the Triangle press<lb />
referred to the crowd from the east<lb />
as bare-footed yahoos and<lb />
Philistines who were unable to<lb />
grasp the niceties of proper sporting<lb />
etiquette.<lb />
What? No  the fine up-<lb />
standing students at East Carolina<lb />
University would never do weird<lb />
stuff like that.<lb />

U.S. Must Support South Africa<lb />

While the intent of those who are<lb />
opposed to the Reagan Administra-<lb />
tion policy in South Africa is com-<lb />
mendable, the reality of economic<lb />
preservation must prevail. Economic<lb />
sanctions against South Africa would<lb />
be more harmful to the oppressed<lb />
majority than apartheid itself.<lb />
South Africa's economy is based<lb />
on a tiangle network dependant on<lb />
England, the United States and<lb />
herself. Heavy industrial investment<lb />
in South Africa by Fortune 500 com-<lb />
panies has produced a healthy margin<lb />
of profit for American companies.<lb />
These same companies have provided<lb />
jobs for Blacks and Whites irrespec-<lb />
tive of the indifferences of apartheid.<lb />
The Reagan administration has ex-<lb />
pressed concerns to President Botha<lb />
while not jeapordizing the delicate<lb />
economic fabric.<lb />
Further if is not the place of the<lb />
American government to dictate<lb />
human rights policy to foreign states.<lb />
President Carter did not realize this-<lb />
and it contributed to his inevitable<lb />
downfall. The American government<lb />
has a responsibility only with regard<lb />
to protecting our own, in economic<lb />
agreements, mutual aid compacts.<lb />
foreign policy treaties and the preser-<lb />
vation of national interests.<lb />
The American government cannot<lb />
implore economic sanctions and<lb />
other punitive measures everytime<lb />
there is a human rights violation<lb />
under a government that is an ally<lb />
Do we not have injustices in our<lb />
system? It is refreshing to have an ex-<lb />
ecutive branch and home state<lb />
senators that employ the needs o' the<lb />
nation over the needs of those sub-<lb />
jected to discrimination thousands of<lb />

speech; ostensibly one of great weight.<lb />
The heat was excruciating and few in<lb />
our party had slept the night before. My<lb />
companions drank huge vats of cola<lb />
and perspired them out in rivulets that<lb />
ran into lakes just as quickly as thev<lb />
could down them � all in a desparate<lb />
attempt to keep from dehydrating.<lb />
Eight bouncing Wolfpack sirens<lb />
gesticulated in a contrived way to music<lb />
that was worse than what I'm ac-<lb />
customed to hearing in dentist's offices.<lb />
Intermittently, someone bellowed "Go<lb />
Wolfpack" and later chants of "USA"<lb />
"USA" "USA" that sounded almost<lb />
menacing overcame the muffled hum of<lb />
the crowd. All around the coliseum ban-<lb />
ners and signs proclaimed humanity's<lb />
love for Ronald Reagan and the N.C.<lb />
State Wolfpack. Who could resist the<lb />
pull of the thing? When ROTC cadets<lb />
snap to attention people are inspired to<lb />
nationalism and school spirit or at least<lb />
a facsimile thereof.<lb />
And so it was that a gymnasium full<lb />
of people panted and gasped their way<lb />
through the national anthem and then<lb />
sat back down to resign themselves to<lb />
mute and frantic fanning with folded<lb />
programs while they awaited the arrival<lb />
of the president.<lb />
Meanwhile, outside beneath the<lb />
shade trees that stand opposite the front<lb />
entrance to the coliseum stood the<lb />
legions of dissent. Their signs were ex-<lb />
pressions of opposition, primarily to<lb />
Reagan's policies in Central America<lb />
and South Africa. Here and there one<lb />
or two urged the president to end the<lb />
arms race.<lb />
Though the press had prophesied that<lb />
members of the AFL-CIO and the Na-<lb />
tional Organization for Women would<lb />
be among the ranks of the 150 or so<lb />
demonstrators present, neither was in<lb />
evidence. No one could explain why this<lb />
was so. Nor could anyone explain why,<lb />
at a speech that had to do with tax<lb />
reform, a demonstration was organized<lb />
around foreign policy issues. The<lb />
prevailing sentiment seemed to be that<lb />
these were the issues that most aroused<lb />
public sympathy and the demonstrators<lb />
themselves.<lb />
Back inside the coliseum Ronald<lb />
Reagan, impervious to the crowd out-<lb />
side, delivered his pitch straight from<lb />
the three page text that had been handed<lb />
out to members of the press in advance.<lb />
The president said that his tax plan is:<lb />
"a good plan, a fair plan that helps<lb />
families and spurs economic growth<lb />
He added: "It will mean more jobs, big-<lb />
ger paychecks, and smaller taxes for<lb />
those who now pay too much. And it<lb />
will give America a powerful boost<lb />
ahead in the world<lb />
competition About the specifics of<lb />
his plan the president was decidedly<lb />
vague. Yet, he did say that he plans to<lb />
close tax loopholes and exempt families<lb />
of four making $12,000 or less from<lb />
paying any taxes at all.<lb />

In tact, no fewer than 65 tax breaks<lb />
are plugged or curtailed by the Reagan<lb />
proposal, including the second largest<lb />
business tax loophole on the books, the<lb />
$25 billion investment tax credit. These<lb />
progressive measures, coupled with the<lb />
fact that Reagan's reform package also<lb />
doubles personal exemptions to $2,000<lb />
for all filers and their dependents and<lb />
raises the standard deduction used by<lb />
low and middle-income taxpayers belie<lb />
the philosophy behind his recent experi-<lb />
ment with trickle-down economics. The<lb />
idea that a tax system designed to put<lb />
more money in the hands of the wealthy<lb />
at the expense of the poor and working<lb />
class will result in more jobs and higher<lb />
incomes for the poor and working class<lb />
has been abandoned even by Reagan.<lb />
Thus his recent tax reform proposal<lb />
alleviates the 58 percent tax increase<lb />
that has befallen people living below the<lb />
poverty line since the president took of-<lb />
fice in 1980.<lb />
Yet, Reagan's tax package is far from<lb />
being a genuinely progressive peice of<lb />
legislation. It caves in to powerful oil in-<lb />
terests by preserving the tax deduction<lb />
for intangible drilling costs � a tax<lb />
preference that Reagan's own Treasury<lb />
Department had wanted to eliminate. It<lb />
preserves the special tax exclusion for<lb />
capital gains � a $20 billion tax break<lb />
primarily benifitting the wealthiest 4<lb />
percent of all taxpayers. The plan con-<lb />
tinues to give business executives an<lb />
unlimited deduction for the three-<lb />
martini lunch, while taxing all<lb />
unemployment compensation and<lb />
weakening the tax break for child-care<lb />
credits.<lb />
In addition, Treasury department<lb />
figures reveal that a six-person family<lb />
with $600,000 could cut their taxes by<lb />
$70,000 under the administration's<lb />
plan. Only a $400 tax cut awaits a<lb />
typical $33,000 family of four. Reagan<lb />
has also promised lower tax rates for<lb />
corporations which is difficult to im-<lb />
agine since many of the nation's largest<lb />
corporations payed little or no taxes at<lb />
all in 1984. To lower corporate taxes, of<lb />
course, is not a bad thing in itself If<lb />
such a measure is offset by a more pro-<lb />
gressive tax which eliminates loopholes<lb />
and forces wealthy individuals to pay<lb />
their fair share, elimination of the cor-<lb />
porate tax could actually make addi-<lb />
tional revenue for the government. Yet<lb />
Reagan's plan will not do this on<lb />
balance. Instead, it will continue a long<lb />
tradition that has persisted in this coun-<lb />
try: a tradition of having the nation's<lb />
tax laws favor corporations and the<lb />
wealthy.<lb />
Reagan also said that he refuses to<lb />
raise taxes under any circumstances.<lb />
This can only give the average citizen<lb />
cause to ponder what he plans to do to<lb />
whittle down the current national<lb />
deficit. According to the Treasury<lb />
department, the entire Reagan package<lb />
will fuel a 1.5 percent rise in gross na-<lb />
tional product within 10 years, yet most<lb />
analysts consider this estimate to be an<lb />
optimistic one. Any additional efforts<lb />
to attack the deficit will have to come<lb />
from cuts in social programs, many of<lb />
which have already suffered repeated<lb />
cuts. Democrats are likely to oppose<lb />
such measures.<lb />
Reagan's proposal also has to run the<lb />
gauntlet of special interests who<lb />
generally organize to oppose any legisla-<lb />
tion that threatens them. The National<lb />
Apartment Association, for example,<lb />
has already labeled Reagan's plan<lb />
"devastating The National<lb />
Restaurant Association terms it "totally<lb />
unacceptable The American Council<lb />
of Life Insurance complained that the<lb />
reform package would "increase taxes<lb />
significantly and unfairly" in the life in-<lb />
surance industry.<lb />
It is not unimaginable that Reagan's<lb />
package will survive the assualt by<lb />
special interests, though, and the fact<lb />
that his tax reform package has some<lb />
merit cannot be denied. Some reform of<lb />
the existing system is certainly better<lb />
than no reform. Yet, when the current<lb />
tax system is congenitally regressive as a<lb />
result, to some extent, of measures<lb />
which the Reagan administration itself<lb />
has enacted, mild reform measures are<lb />
inadequate. Moreover, a reform pro-<lb />
posal that has been touted as "a second<lb />
American Revolution which, in reali-<lb />
ty, continues to cater to the wealthy and<lb />
special interests onl disillusions the<lb />
majority of Americans as to the pro-<lb />
spects for genuine tax reform and<lb />
responsive government.<lb />

come to town. TW's "Comedy<lb />
one" started this summer<lb />
amidst a whirlwind of support.<lb />
The "Comed Zone" hosts a pair<lb />
stand-up comedians every<lb />
Wednesday night and is an enter-<lb />
taining alternative to the usual<lb />
(ii eenville festiv ities.<lb />
"Comedy clubs have only<lb />
ently gotten popular in the<lb />
itheast commented Steve<lb />
Ebstein, last Wednesday night's<lb />
star performer. "When 1 first<lb />
started in comedy, we performed<lb />
an v where fraternity parties,<lb />
birthday parties, anywhere<lb />
There were only a couple of corn-<lb />
ed clubs a r o u n d. ' He<lb />
explainslt only been the last<lb />
few years or so that comedy clubs<lb />
have started becoming popular<lb />
Ebstein, originally from<lb />
Brooklyn, now lives in Houston.<lb />
He has been on the comedy cir-<lb />
cuit for several years. It's evident<lb />
in his style and manner. "1 think<lb />

found out that the opening act<lb />
hadn't been heard from. So they<lb />
asked me to open. That was this<lb />
morning. They want me to do 35<lb />

worth the effort and a refreshing<lb />

Pirates Plunder Wolves' Den<lb />

Saturday night, under the<lb />
white, hot halogen lights of<lb />
Carter-Finlev Stadium, the East<lb />
Carolina University Pirates<lb />
romped over N.C. State's<lb />
Wolfpack to the tune of 33-14.<lb />
But the show of Purple Pride that<lb />
swept through crimson territory<lb />
was much more than a victory.<lb />
The Pirate Attack had begun.<lb />
A record 58,300 fans jammed<lb />
the stadium. Four skydivers<lb />
tumbled out of the sky and land-<lb />
ed on the field carrying the game<lb />
ball. A recording of State's wolf-<lb />
howl echoed across electric air.<lb />
and fans warmed to fever pitch as<lb />
ECU won the toss. The national<lb />
anthem came to a close, a roar<lb />
went up in to the twilight, and the<lb />
biggest rivalry in the state came<lb />
to its moment.<lb />
It all went basically as planned<lb />
until the clock showed less than a<lb />
minute left in the game. With the<lb />
final score already on the board,<lb />
Pirate fans first showed signs that<lb />
their enthusiasm would overflow.<lb />
Spectators began to gather at the<lb />
lower edge of the grassy hillside<lb />
at the end of the field. They<lb />
poured down the bank and<lb />
swarmed against the chain-link<lb />
fence which barricaded the end<lb />
zone. In seconds, it was clear that<lb />
the fence would not hold them.<lb />
On the lower right-hand side of<lb />
the visitors' stands, the trend<lb />
continued. The bottom edge of<lb />
the stadium quickly filled with<lb />
masses of raging Pirates. The<lb />
clock ticked and then stopped.<lb />

With four seconds left on the<lb />
board and the Pirates in posses-<lb />
sion of the ball, N.C. State called<lb />
time out. It was too much. The<lb />
crowd hesitated only a moment.<lb />
The fence at the end of the field<lb />
bulged and collapsed, and the<lb />
mob spilled onto the green. On<lb />
the opposite end of the visitor's<lb />
stands, people rolled over the lip<lb />
of the stadium likewell, like<lb />
pirates.<lb />
By this time, the announcer<lb />
was pleading. Pandamonium<lb />
took the field. The first point of<lb />
the attack was the shiny red goal<lb />
post. For a moment or two it<lb />
looked as though it would fall.<lb />
But NCSU security managed to<lb />
appear at the right moment and<lb />
deflect the swarm of fans in a dif-<lb />
ferent direction. The jubilant<lb />
Pirates surrendered the goal posts<lb />
in exchange for the entire field.<lb />
Moments later the fifty-yard line<lb />
was buried beneath thousands of<lb />
sports fans. In the center of the<lb />
mass, a purple and gold banner<lb />
waved merrily above the heads of<lb />
the rampant participants.<lb />
Flashbulbs popped as<lb />
photographers scrambled for<lb />
shots of the joyous occasion. The<lb />
East Carolina marching band<lb />
heralded the uproarious display<lb />
of purple pride, and streamers,<lb />
neon-white under the stadium<lb />
lights, unfurled against the night<lb />
sky.<lb />
For a few moments, the an-<lb />
nouncer tried to restore order.<lb />
Both teams knelt on one knee in<lb />
their huddles, and the joyous<lb />
mass of spectators dispersed to<lb />
cover the entire field. Fans ran,<lb />
ecstatic in the glory of it all. The<lb />
stands were chaotic with celebra-<lb />
tion. Finally, the clock was allow-<lb />
ed to run out, and the conquest<lb />
was complete. Above, the bluish<lb />
halo of the stadium, fireworks<lb />
burst brightly against the night<lb />
sky. Pirate Pride knew no<lb />
bounds.<lb />
W'hen asked Sunday about the<lb />
tremendous enthusiasm shown by<lb />
ECU supporters at Carter-Finlev<lb />
Stadium, ECU Coach Art Baker<lb />
said, "That's like asking me if I<lb />
like apple pie He added that<lb />
the loyalty of the fans was a big<lb />
factor in the game and was cer-<lb />
tainly a pleasure for the team.<lb />
"My wife was coming down<lb />
the elevator when she heard an<lb />
N.C. State official say, 'East<lb />
Carolina may have won the ball<lb />
game, but they certainly didn't<lb />
know how to win with class<lb />
said Baker. "I thought that to be<lb />
sort of a surprising comment. I<lb />

State basketball team won the<lb />

"I think she overslept said<lb />
Jay Stone, managing editor of<lb />
The East Carolinian. He was<lb />
referring to Lorin Pasqual, the<lb />
entertainment editor. She was<lb />
late, and Jay's hair was redder<lb />
than usual.<lb />
Reagan was scheduled to speak<lb />
in Raleigh around 11:30, but our<lb />
entourage needed to hit the city<lb />
limits before 9 a.m. in order to<lb />
get the proper press credentials.<lb />
As the big hand slowly moved<lb />
towards the twelve, dread began<lb />
to set in. I couldn't find my<lb />
cigarettes, and I knew that Lorin<lb />
smoked. Where was she?!<lb />
The entourage I speak of con-<lb />
sisted of myself, Jay, Lorin,<lb />
Harold Joyner (News Editor) and<lb />
Doug (a staff writer whose last<lb />
name never made it into conver-<lb />
sation). We were a jolly bunch,<lb />
ready to see the President in ac-<lb />
tion on the N.C. State campus.<lb />
As Lorin rounded her car into<lb />
the parking lot, a wave of relief<lb />
came over us as we gathered<lb />
together our respective press kits:<lb />
tape recorders, cameras with<lb />
lenses that resembled bazookas,<lb />
pens that actually worked and<lb />
press notebooks with unintelligi-<lb />
ble scribblings in them. All we<lb />
needed were cigarettes and gas,<lb />
so we decided to stop at a service<lb />
station. This was the first<lb />
mistake.<lb />
I rode with Lorin because she<lb />
smoked. Doug and Harold rode<lb />
in Jay's car becausewell, I real-<lb />
ly don't know why. Maybe it was<lb />
because of all of the cameras and<lb />
bazookas in Lorin's back seat.<lb />
As Lorin and I got into her car,<lb />
we saw a brown blur. It was Jay's<lb />
car flying onto the highway. We<lb />
tried to catch up, but it had<lb />
vanished from the face of the<lb />
earth.<lb />
"Do you know where we're<lb />
supposed to get the press<lb />
passes?" she asked.<lb />
"I know how to get to<lb />
Raleigh I said, hoping she was<lb />
joking. She wasn't joking.<lb />
Mutually, we decided to rough<lb />
it. If worse came to worse, we'd<lb />
stop by City Hall for informa-<lb />
tion. Of course, we didn't know<lb />
where that was either. From that<lb />
moment, I felt a sense of adven-<lb />
ture setting in. I lit a cigarette, sat<lb />
back in the bucket seat and relax-<lb />
ed. An ad venture yeah!<lb />
Many miles and tobacco fields<lb />
later, we were on the outskirts of<lb />
Raleigh. Lorin's car rolled to a<lb />
halt because that's what red lights<lb />
are for. Luckily for Harold,<lb />
Lorin obeyed stop lights.<lb />
"Look she said as she<lb />
pointed to a service station on the<lb />
left.<lb />
I could barely see Harold stan-<lb />
ding at a telephone booth. Then<lb />
his eyes caught the familiar sight<lb />
of Lorin's car, and he dashed<lb />
over. Harold was all smiles as he<lb />
moved aside the bazooka and<lb />
crawled into the back seat.<lb />
"Jay left me here to catch you<lb />
guys in case you didn't know<lb />
where you were going<lb />
"Harold I said, "What if the<lb />
light had been green?"<lb />
"Oh well he said. We laugh-<lb />
ed. Nervously, I might add.<lb />
We found the appointed hotel,<lb />
the Velvet something, and talked<lb />
up to tht reception desk. The<lb />
lady at the desk commented dryly<lb />
that the people with the press<lb />
passes had already left.<lb />
Lorin was quick.<lb />
"Did this guy with red hair and<lb />
freckles she began as she was<lb />
cut off by the receptionist's nod-<lb />
ding head, it seemed that Jay had<lb />
caught the head press lady as she<lb />
was walking out the door. Lucky<lb />
us, 1 thought. Where's Jay?<lb />
Jay was nowhere to be found.<lb />
The brown blur had struck again.<lb />
In the back of our minds, we real-<lb />
ly wondered if Jay had managed<lb />
to get the passes. If he struck out,<lb />
we could always sing songs on the<lb />
way back to Greenville, songs<lb />
like, "Oh where, oh where has<lb />
our editor gone<lb />
We were a jolly bunch, though.<lb />
A determined bunch. We were<lb />
going to see Reagan, and that was<lb />
all there was to that.<lb />
The three of us managed to<lb />
find the auditorium. We even<lb />
found press parking. We also<lb />
found a lot of policemen roaming<lb />
around with walkie-talkies. We<lb />
found a lot of things including<lb />
the press entrance. We found<lb />
everything � except Jay.<lb />
As we stood in front of a line<lb />
vaguely resembling recent lines<lb />
outside of Whichard, who should<lb />
come sauntering along out of the<lb />
sweltering heat but Jay! He was<lb />
grinning ear to ear, press passes<lb />
in hand. Doug was faithfully in<lb />
tow.<lb />
We were happy.<lb />
Security was tight. Metal detec-<lb />
tors were stationed just inside<lb />
each entrance. Secret Service men<lb />
stood around the auditorium as<lb />
their eyes darted hither and yon.<lb />
Reagan seemed to be on his way.<lb />
As the place began to fill up,<lb />
N.C. State cheerleaders took ad-<lb />
vantage of the press corps and the<lb />
captive audience. They started in<lb />

From The Not So Right<lb />
No Room For Roommates<lb />

Roommates. The topic for today is roommates.<lb />
Not nuclear waste, or parasitic insects - although<lb />
roommates fall somewhere in the middle of these two<lb />
categories as someone or something you wouldn't in-<lb />
vite into your home.<lb />
To those of you who live on campus, I extend my<lb />
sympathies. I was also subject to the great travesty<lb />
known only as the Housing<lb />
Department. My first year at East<lb />
Carolina University, I was placed<lb />
in Belk Dorm and told to live with<lb />
a roommate who looked as if he<lb />
had gotten into a fight with<lb />
shrapnel - and lost.<lb />
I'll never forget him. His name<lb />
was Brad, and aside from being<lb />
ugly, he was very cross-eyed. Now<lb />
I'm not condoning the ousting of<lb />
all ugly people on campus, but<lb />
Lord, in some instances it has to be<lb />
done.<lb />
Brad was an enigma to me. He<lb />
never tried to get laid, and he<lb />
would get drunk from just two<lb />
beers. Being the average, bone-head freshman that I<lb />
was, I would guzzle down nine or 10 cold ones, and<lb />
spend the rest of the evening trying to jump on<lb />
anything that looked even remotely feminine. I've<lb />
woken up in some peculiar places - but that's another<lb />
story.<lb />
Eventually, Brad failed out of school with a blaz-<lb />
ing .30 grade point average. I've often wondered<lb />
what became of Brad - I'd like to think he's doing<lb />

was quite forgettable. In fact, I've forgotten his last<lb />
name already. This dude was a bore. And I'm talkm'<lb />
BORE. The only constructive thing Scot ever did<lb />
was wake up. He would get up, turn on the televi-<lb />
sion, and become a vegetable for 14 hours.<lb />
To this day 1 believe he had a crush on Viki Steub-<lb />
ing. Scot had another undesirable trait: He was<lb />
stupid - supremely stupid. To phrase it another way,<lb />
Scot was brain dead. How he got into college I'll<lb />
never understand. Scot also failed out of school<lb />
aJJ which is understandable because<lb />

he never saw the inside of a lecture<lb />
hall the whole time he was here.<lb />
The next year I lived alone, but I<lb />
never failed out of school - which<lb />
brings us to the present.<lb />
I'm living with two roommates<lb />
now. so I'm going through a form<lb />
of culture shock. One of them,<lb />
H� rible Hal. is in the living room<lb />
mM studying. If there's one word I<lb />
i�v. could use to describe Hal, it would<lb />
m be "deranged The man is men-<lb />
tally stable, I think; he's just wild.<lb />
He recently quit smoking, so he's<lb />
going through some emotional<lb />
changes right now. For instance,<lb />
when Hal has a sinus problem, he can't be like a nor-<lb />
mal person and clear his nasal passages in the<lb />
bathroom - Hal just blocks one side of his nose and<lb />
blasts the floor. I'm breaking him of this habit by<lb />
locking him in his room with no supply of tissue. I<lb />
estimate he can stay in there for two days before he<lb />
blows himself right out of the room. Horrible is also<lb />
very handy with mechanical things. I haven't seen<lb />
anything that he can't fix - except his love life.<lb />
Hal is looking to settle down a bit. He's feeling<lb />
that his golden years are passing him by, and he<lb />

Jay left us behind again<lb />
because we decided to stav<lb />
behind and get some more<lb />
smokes. 1 was broke, and Lorin<lb />
consoled me with a pack of<lb />
tobacco.<lb />
As uc nuned out of the<lb />
Raleigh city limits, I found that I<lb />
needed my handkerchief. Bad im-<lb />
ages of my reporter friend<lb />
decorated my thoughts.<lb />
"I need some Kleenex I an-<lb />
nounced. "I need some Kleenex<lb />
or I'm gonna do something really<lb />

Obviously convinced that I was<lb />
capable of doing something rude,<lb />
she pulled over to a service sta-<lb />
tion. I was broke, and Lorin con-<lb />
soled me with a package of<lb />
Kleenex.<lb />
After driving along for a few<lb />
more miles, we deduced that we<lb />
were lost. Really lost, as in<lb />
"Where is Rocky Mount in rela-<lb />
tion to Greenville?"<lb />
Lorin manuevered her car into<lb />
another service station, and both<lb />

Coach Baker had only positive<lb />
thoughts about his defense, as<lb />

credit Baker said. "The hung<lb />

As the ECU men's and<lb />
women's swim teams begin the<lb />
first half of their '8586 season,<lb />
coach Rick Kobe has high hopes<lb />
for the Pirates because of a large<lb />
number of returning veterans as<lb />
well as a strong recruiting class.<lb />
"This is our first year with a<lb />
veteran team said fourth-year<lb />
head coach Rick Kobe. "Seniors<lb />
Kaut, Pittelli. Hawkins. Cook<lb />
and Robaczewski will help give us<lb />
the depth and experience we'll<lb />
need to achieve our goals<lb />
The '85 recruiting class, in-<lb />
cluding five junior-national<lb />
qualifiers, should make strong<lb />
contributions even during their<lb />
rookie season.<lb />
"The freshmen aren't being<lb />
weaned Kobe said. "They're<lb />
here to contribute from the first<lb />
meet<lb />
Hopefully such contributions<lb />
will produce some qualifiers for<lb />
the fastest meet in the world, the<lb />
NCAA championships. '84<lb />
freshman Bruce Brockschmidt<lb />
missed qualifying last season by<lb />
only half of a second in the<lb />
100-meter freestyle.<lb />
To begin the process of getting<lb />
into competitive shape, the<lb />
Pirates enter a two-week running<lb />
program. The program ends with<lb />
a biathlon in which both men and<lb />
women will swim two miles, run<lb />
live and then swim one more.<lb />
During the regular dual-meet<lb />
season, they swim about fourteen<lb />
thousand yards daily, as well as<lb />
participating in weight training<lb />
programs.<lb />
Prior to their first regular dual<lb />
meet, the Pirates will split up for<lb />
their PurpleGold meet. The pur-<lb />
pose of this scrimmage is to see<lb />
which swimmers will perform<lb />
well under pressure.<lb />
ECU opens its dual-meet<lb />
season against Furman Universi-<lb />
ty on Nov. 7. The Furman<lb />
women are ranked in the top five<lb />
of NCAA Division-II, while the<lb />
men had the fastest ranked<lb />
backstroker in the U.S. in<lb />
8485.<lb />
The Pirates swim next on Nov.<lb />
18 against N.C. State, a team<lb />
ECU has yet to beat. "They're<lb />
the top team on our schedule<lb />
said Kobe.<lb />
On Nov. 23, both men's and<lb />
women's teams will travel to<lb />
Charlotte for their first away<lb />
meet. UNCC, whose program is<lb />
very new, should be ECU's<lb />
weakest opponent.<lb />
On Dec. sixth, both men and<lb />
women will swim against Navy at<lb />
Annapolis.<lb />
"The Navy men and women<lb />
are always tough said Kobe,<lb />
"Our guys have lost to them for<lb />
the last five years<lb />
Unlike most NCAA pools,<lb />
Navy's is 25 meters long insted<lb />
of 25 yards. That gives them a<lb />
distinct home advantage since<lb />
training on a 25 meter pool<lb />
makes competing on one easier.<lb />
The five foot difference between<lb />
the two may not seem like much,<lb />
but it can make a big difference<lb />
in a swimmer's rhythm.<lb />
On Dec. 8, the ECU women's<lb />
team will swim at home against<lb />
the University of New Hamp-<lb />
shire. "Our women will have to<lb />
swim well to win said Kobe.<lb />
"They're (N.H.) coming down<lb />
for one reason, to swim against<lb />
ECU<lb />
On Dec. 14th, the Pirates will<lb />
swim their final meet of the<lb />
FallWinter season against<lb />
American University here at<lb />
Minges Natatorium. According<lb />
to coach Kobe, American is "a<lb />
good team however, he feels<lb />
that both the men and thewomen<lb />
should win fairly easily.<lb />
From Dec. 28th-Jan. 5th the<lb />
Pirates will travel to the North<lb />
Palm Beach Aquatic Club in<lb />
Florida for their Christmas train-<lb />
ing session. The team will train in<lb />
two, two-hour sessions each day.<lb />
On Jan. 2, ECU will swim against<lb />
John Hopkins Unversity at Palm<lb />
Beach.<lb />
With a good group of new<lb />
talent combined with the senior<lb />
leadership, both the men's and<lb />
