Students Don't Want Pee Dee<lb />
By JENNIFER JENDRASIAK<lb />
Nwt Editor<lb />
In addition to selecting class<lb />
officers and day and dorm<lb />
legislators in yesterday's SGA<lb />
elections, ECU students had a<lb />
chance to voice opinions on state<lb />
and national elections and on one<lb />
campus issue, the name for the<lb />
Pirate mascot.<lb />
Students were overwhelmingly<lb />
opposed to the name Pee Dee for<lb />
the mascot, with 82 percent of<lb />
those voting saying they did not<lb />
like it. ECU Chancellor John<lb />
Howell said he was unsure of the<lb />
effect this would have on any<lb />
decision he would make to<lb />
recommend a name change.<lb />
"1 think I'll sleep on it<lb />
Howell said. "I'm not in as big of<lb />
a hurry to make a decision as<lb />
everyone else is. I've found that<lb />
the less important a decision is,<lb />
the more of a hurry people are in<lb />
to have it made<lb />
Howell added that he felt the<lb />
matter would require some<lb />
"deliberation saying that he<lb />
did not want to recommend a<lb />

Safe Seat Belt Use<lb />
Promoted By Groups<lb />
By JENNIFER JENDRASIAK<lb />
Nfws Editor<lb />
A petition aimed at persuading<lb />
the television and motion picture<lb />
industries to demonstrate proper<lb />
seat belt usage for the benefit of<lb />
young children will be initiated at<lb />
ECU within two weeks.<lb />
According to Sherrie Peterson,<lb />
student coordinator for the pro-<lb />
gram, 'he petition will appeal<lb />
especially to television programs<lb />
portraying hazardous driving.<lb />
"We want to advocate that they<lb />
(the industries) demonstrate ap-<lb />
propriate seat belt usage thus ser-<lb />
ving as a proper role model for<lb />
children<lb />
The project has already been<lb />
initiated in approximately 1,000<lb />
communities nationally, Peterson<lb />
said. It is being supervised na-<lb />
tionally by Scott Geller of Viginia<lb />
Polytechnic Institute and locally<lb />
by John Cope of the Department<lb />
of Psychology and the ECU<lb />
Chapter of Psi Chi, the national<lb />
honor society in psychology.<lb />
Peterson said an effort was<lb />
made by both the U.S. govern-<lb />
ment and the auto industry to in-<lb />
itiate a change but the response<lb />
was that this "would weaken the<lb />
macho image of male TV stars,<lb />
jeopardizing the ratings<lb />
"This is irresponsible public<lb />
broadcasting and we want to stop<lb />
it Peterson said, adding that<lb />
car accidents are the number one<lb />
killer of children under the age of<lb />
5.<lb />
Peterson said she feels that<lb />
television is important in pro-<lb />
moting child safety because<lb />
"children spend more time wat-<lb />
ching TV than reading books and<lb />
listening to music In addition,<lb />
she said "TV is a major socializ-<lb />
ing factor for children, many of<lb />
whom begin watching when they<lb />
are 2 or 3<lb />
Having a television or movie<lb />
character don a seat belt prior to<lb />
participation in a chase scene<lb />
would help teach children the im-<lb />
portance of this habit, Peterson<lb />
said. "After this, parents can<lb />
reinforce the seat belt habit by<lb />
letting children imitate their pro-<lb />
per behavior<lb />
Petitions will be distributed on<lb />
the ECU campus through student<lb />
organizations and will also be<lb />
distributed to the Chamber of<lb />
Commerce, the state Highway<lb />
Patrol and other community<lb />
groups.<lb />
Freshman president<lb />
Lisa Carroll<lb />
name change only to have the<lb />
issue come up again in the near<lb />
future.<lb />
"I think this vote shows in-<lb />
terest among the student body on<lb />
the issue said SGA President<lb />
John Rainey. "It is something<lb />
which we should take as evidence<lb />
that the student body is interested<lb />
in changing the name<lb />
Rainey said the question was<lb />
included on the ballot so the SGA<lb />
could have "something on paper<lb />
to show how students felt about<lb />
the ECU mascot<lb />
The issue of changing the name<lb />
has received a great deal of<lb />
publicity, with stories on several<lb />
local television stations. In addi-<lb />
tion, the Raleigh News and<lb />
Observer carried a story about<lb />
the name change on its front<lb />
page, as did the Daily Reflector.<lb />
The story was also picked up by<lb />
United Press International.<lb />
The name of the mascot was<lb />
chosen in a contest sponsored by<lb />
the ECU Department of Athletics<lb />
to provide publicity for its pro-<lb />
grams.<lb />

De Borchgrave To Speak<lb />
Acclaimed journalist Arnaud<lb />
de Borchgrave, once described as<lb />
"one of America's great foreign<lb />
correspondents will be visiting<lb />
ECU on Tuesday, Oct. 9. His ad-<lb />
dress, open to the public, will be<lb />
at 3:30 p.m. in Room 244 of<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center.<lb />
De Borchgrave will appear as a<lb />
guest of the College Republicans<lb />
and Students for Helms. He will<lb />
discuss the upcoming elections,<lb />
his experiences in journalism and<lb />
Soviet media disinformation, his<lb />
field of expertise.<lb />
As Newsweek 's Chief Foreign<lb />
Correspondent, de Borchgrave<lb />
covered most of the world's ma-<lb />
jor events after joining the<lb />
magazine staff in 1950. In a re-<lb />
cent article, Esquire magazine<lb />
said that in 33 years, de Bor-<lb />
chgrave covered 17 wars and<lb />
more than 90 countries and<lb />
"traded gossip with Anwar<lb />
Sadat, sipped tea with Pham Van<lb />
Dong in Hanoi and was a<lb />
houseguest of King Hussein. In a<lb />
job that requires bluff and<lb />
bravado, he had outrun the best<lb />
of them<lb />
De Borchgrave resigned from<lb />
Newsweek in 1980 after co-<lb />
authoring The Spike with Robert<lb />
Moss. The book, which dealt<lb />
with Soviet KGB operations in<lb />
the Western media, was an inter-<lb />
national bestseller. His most re-<lb />
cent book, Monimbo, is a novel<lb />
about Cuban-sponsored ter-<lb />
rorism, the Cuban drug connec-<lb />
tion in the U.S and the DGI, the<lb />
Cuban secret service which<lb />
operates the Spanish language<lb />
branch of the KGB.<lb />

One year after the Safe Roads<lb />
Act went into effect in North<lb />
Carolina, many Greenville<lb />
nightclubs are experiencing some<lb />
economic problems.<lb />
Tom Haines, owner of the At-<lb />
tic and the vice-president of the<lb />
Greenville Nightclub Associa-<lb />
tion, said the biggest effect of the<lb />
law was the loss of 18-year-old<lb />
college students as customers.<lb />
"We lost those people as well as<lb />
the out-of-towners. So the law is<lb />
not affecting the nightclubs<lb />
only he said. He said the peo-<lb />
ple coming to Greenville<lb />
nightclubs from out of town are<lb />
not going to risk driving being<lb />
stopped for drinking.<lb />
The Elbo Room, which admits<lb />
18-year-old college students, has<lb />
not experienced a decline in at-<lb />
tendance since the l?w went in ef-<lb />
fect last October according to<lb />
Kirby Bryson, owner of the Elbo<lb />
who said business has been better<lb />
than usual, "but I still feel the<lb />
law has not helped the problem<lb />
of drunk drivers. People are<lb />
more careful about their drinking<lb />
and they are choosing alternative<lb />
methods of transportation<lb />
Bryson said many students are<lb />
calling cabs and utilizing SGA<lb />
buses to take them home safely.<lb />
"I think it is good the SGA offers<lb />
this service he said, "and I am<lb />
glad other public transportation<lb />
is available to students<lb />
Haines said people are not go-<lb />
ing to give up their social life<lb />
because of the law, and therefore<lb />
have become more responsible<lb />
drinkers. "When the law first<lb />
went into effect he saidwe<lb />
saw a definite decline in the<lb />
amount of alcohol consumed,<lb />
but it is leveling off now<lb />
Many clubs are having to cut<lb />
corners to compensate for the<lb />
lack of business, Haines said. "A<lb />
lot of places have had to lay off<lb />
bartenders simply because there<lb />
was no business for them. We<lb />
cut our insurance to compensate<lb />
for the loss and of course that<lb />
caused a lot of problems he<lb />
said.<lb />
Haines said he felt a lot of the<lb />
drinking law has been political.<lb />
"A lot of politicians were<lb />
obligated to their constituents<lb />
and therefore had to vote for the<lb />
law. If the younger people had<lb />
voiced their opposition of the bill<lb />
from the beginning, politicians<lb />
would have had no other choice<lb />
but to vote against it<lb />
In an informal poll conducted<lb />
by Haines, 100 18-year-old<lb />
students were asked if they had<lb />
stopped drinking since the law<lb />
was passed, "and all 100 of<lb />
them said no he said. "The<lb />
law has made criminals out of the<lb />
18-year-olds Haines added.<lb />
W. C. King, owner of the King<lb />
and Queen North said he thinks<lb />
more people are conscious of the<lb />
law and are buying fewer drinks.<lb />
"About 20 percent of our<lb />
business is from ECU students<lb />
and they are consuming about 25<lb />
to 30 percent less alcohol as a<lb />
result of the Safe Roads Act he<lb />
said.<lb />
Local businesses are also feel-<lb />
ing the effect of the law, Haines<lb />
said. "Many business such as<lb />
restuarants and convenience<lb />
stores have felt the impact of the<lb />
law. Let's face it, people are not<lb />
going to come here if they can't<lb />
drink Haines said because<lb />
Greenville is a college town and<lb />
the nightclubs want to continue<lb />
operating, many places will have<lb />
to go private to accomodate the<lb />
liquor laws. "I believe more<lb />
places will go private if they con-<lb />
tinue to see a decline in<lb />
clientele Haines said.<lb />
Congress is currently propos-<lb />
ing a new bill which would make<lb />
it mandatory for states to raise<lb />
their drinking age to 21. "A lot<lb />
of states do not like this for the<lb />
reason that if they don't raise the<lb />
drinking age, federal highway<lb />
funds will not be given to them.<lb />
States do not like to be told what<lb />
to do Haines said. He also said<lb />
the only state to show opposition<lb />
to a nationwide drinking law is<lb />
Louisana. Haines said he doesn't<lb />
think North Carolina will follow<lb />
this trend because of the large<lb />
number of highways in the state.<lb />
"I feel the only advantage to<lb />
such a bill is that it would<lb />
eliminate the blood border<lb />
states he said.<lb />

ROTC Adventure: For Die-Hards Only<lb />
By ROBERT SMITH<lb />
SUff Wrtler<lb />
Imagine yourself standing in<lb />
the Mendenhall Student Center<lb />
Parking lot at 3 a.m. on a rainy,<lb />
cold, Saturday morning. Why<lb />
am I there? What is going to hap-<lb />
pen to me? Is it really worth<lb />
writing about? My questions<lb />
were answered ery quickly as l<lb />
followed the ECU Army ROTC<lb />
to the Recondo Course at Ft.<lb />
Bragg.<lb />
A short briefing by Cadet<lb />
Capt. Hester and Cadet SFC<lb />
Grey told me quickly that this<lb />
was not going to be my day. The<lb />
veterans of this treatment were<lb />
easily spotted, because they ran<lb />
to the bus when instructed.<lb />
Physical discoort is sure to<lb />
come to any soldier not following<lb />
orders issued by his commanding<lb />
officer.<lb />
The 7:30 arrival at Ft. Bragg<lb />
brought us all to attention. We<lb />
were then instructed to begin<lb />
chanting, "ECU, ECU, we're the<lb />
best; We're the best of all the<lb />
rest; Looking good, standing tall;<lb />
We're the ones with the yellow<lb />
balls After chanting this<lb />
several times at the top of our<lb />
lungs, we held up a yellow tennis<lb />
ball, compliments of the ROTC<lb />
staff.<lb />
The first event involved cross-<lb />
ing a fast flowing river using two<lb />
methods. The first involved us-<lb />
ing an existing bridge measuring<lb />
six inches wide and hanging 35<lb />
feet in the air. I didn't have any<lb />
problems until the second<lb />
method came up.<lb />
A bigger challenge this time,<lb />
we had to construct a single rope<lb />
bridge between two trees. One<lb />
was to cross the river by sliding<lb />
across the top of the rope. I only<lb />
made it half way before I met the<lb />
river. Twenty push-ups for me<lb />
N. C. State Bans Rock-N-Roll Concerts<lb />
(CPS) Thanks to student<lb />
protest and a new student concert<lb />
advisory committee, it's "still<lb />
rock 'n roll" at North Carolina<lb />
State University after all.<lb />
A three-week-old campus ban<lb />
on "heavy metal" music was<lb />
lifted last week when the ad-<lb />
ministration approved a Col-<lb />
iseum Concert Advisory Com<lb />
mittee to screen rock music acts,<lb />
reports committee member Jeff<lb />
Bender.<lb />
The ban followed a Van Halen<lb />
concert where the young,<lb />
predominantly non-campus<lb />
crowd left the university's<lb />
Reynolds Coliseum strewn with<lb />
trash, Bender explains.<lb />
"The Saturday concert meant<lb />
there was no clean-up until Mon-<lb />
day he says. "The administra-<lb />
tion decided 'We don't want this<lb />
mess anymore and reasoned<lb />
that heavy metal bands were<lb />
drawing a young, non-student<lb />
crowd that left a big mess<lb />
Students immediately labeled<lb />
the ban "ridiculous" and<lb />
"discriminatory" and complain-<lb />
ed they'd be forced to go off-<lb />
campus for rock concerts.<lb />
"The biggest contention was<lb />
with the unclear terms of the<lb />
ban Bender stresses. "There<lb />
were no set guidelines about what<lb />
music was banned<lb />
Indeed, Athletic Director<lb />
Willis Casey originally said he'd<lb />
ban rock music while allowing<lb />
the Coliseum to host acts like Bil-<lb />
ly Joel, who Casey apparently<lb />
didn't see as a rock 'n roll musi-<lb />
cian.<lb />
The adverse student reaction<lb />
led to meetings between student<lb />
leaders and university ad-<lb />
ministrators, who proposed the<lb />
student-run advisory committee<lb />
to help make rock bookings.<lb />
Committee members include<lb />
the student center president, the<lb />
director of student union ac-<lb />
tivities, the assistant dean of<lb />
students and Bender, who is<lb />
editor of the campus newspaper.<lb />
"The committee wil help<lb />
screen talent that appears at the<lb />
Coliseum explains Richard<lb />
Farrell, Coliseum business<lb />
manager. "They'll determine if<lb />
students want a particular artist<lb />
on campus<lb />
Coliseum officials will sign<lb />
"family type" acts, he stresses,<lb />
and will consult the students only<lb />
for rock concerts.<lb />
"It will be interesting to see on<lb />
what criteria they judge these<lb />
groups he adds.<lb />
Bender claims the committee is<lb />
a better solution than dealing<lb />
with the administration's<lb />
"paranoia of any type of music<lb />
that appeals to a younger<lb />
crowd<lb />
"They're not interested in<lb />
entertainment that draws a<lb />
15-year-old crowd he points<lb />
out. "I understand that. After<lb />
all, this is a university<lb />

Upon jogging another half<lb />

new event was waiting for us,<lb />
rappelling. Instead of bridges, we<lb />
were now going to jump off the<lb />
side of a steep hill. This could<lb />
have been worse, because had it<lb />
not been raining, we would have<lb />
had the chance to jump off a 60<lb />

After the "Belly Buster"<lb />

was a little more difficult to<lb />

Opinion<lb />
Pee Dee<lb />
Students Want Name Changed<lb />
Well, the students have spoken.<lb />
In the SGA Elections Wednesday,<lb />
students, the heart and soul of this<lb />
university, overwhelmingly decid-<lb />
ed that the name Pee Dee has to<lb />
go. With more than 82 percent of<lb />
the students who voted saying<lb />
"no" to the name, we are telling<lb />
the administration and athletic<lb />
department to give us the chance to<lb />
name our mascot something else.<lb />
The ball is in your court, Dr.<lb />
How ell. And there is only one shot<lb />
to take. It's an easy one. Tell the<lb />
students that you work for that<lb />
they can now begin the process of<lb />
naming the school mascot. There<lb />
should be no delay in this matter.<lb />
On your orders, the athletic<lb />
department and the Student<lb />
Government Association can get<lb />
together and plan a way for the<lb />
students to name the Pirate.<lb />
The East Carolinian offers its<lb />
services. We can reach the students<lb />
the best and facilitate a quick and<lb />
easy re-naming of the mascot.<lb />
We know you will do the right<lb />
thing, Dr. Howell. We trust that<lb />
when confronted with the facts, as<lb />
you have been over the last several<lb />
weeks, you will realize that your<lb />
students were slighted and that<lb />
they deserve a fair chance. The<lb />
athletic department, as you know,<lb />
named our mascot we, the<lb />
students, had nothing to do with it.<lb />
We helped pick the symbol. About<lb />
half of us agree that it is better<lb />
than the old Pirate. Although he's<lb />
a cartoonish-type character, he<lb />
grows on you. The name, though,<lb />
is stagnant and unwanted, as<lb />
evidenced by the lopsided choice to<lb />
dump it.<lb />
We know you realize you should<lb />
have done this several weeks ago<lb />
when it was first brought to your<lb />
attention. But everyone makes<lb />
mistakes, Dr. Howell even<lb />
chancellors of universities. But the<lb />
votes have been counted, and as<lb />
you said in the Raleigh News And<lb />
Observer, "I don't feel strongly<lb />
about it one way or the other<lb />
Well, Dr. Howell, now you know<lb />
the students do.<lb />
You are, in a sense, their ser-<lb />
vant. You are there to help each of<lb />
us get a top-flight education.<lb />
Through this petitioning of our<lb />
grievance, we are putting our<lb />
understanding of American<lb />
government to use. We feel strong-<lb />
ly enough to let you know we care.<lb />
We see an injustice done to us and<lb />
ask that you, as our chancellor, see<lb />
that the wrong done to us is<lb />
righted.<lb />
We, the students, expect that to-<lb />
day you will order the name of Pee<lb />
Dee stricken from our university.<lb />
The faculty doesn't like, it the<lb />
alumni doesn't like it and the<lb />
students have mandated that it be<lb />
changed. See the error of your ad-<lb />
ministration's ways, Dr. Howell.<lb />
Let your students name our<lb />
mascot.<lb />

Helms Not Standing Tall<lb />
And<lb />
With the dust about to settle on<lb />
the Pee Dee issue, we would like to<lb />
address some of the statements<lb />
made during the last couple of<lb />
days.<lb />
First of all, this is important.<lb />
Some members of the administra-<lb />
tion repeatedly said they did not<lb />
want to discuss the issue because<lb />
they felt it was not a pressing mat-<lb />
ter. If this is so, we would like to<lb />
know why these people constantly<lb />
defended their inactions and refus-<lb />
ed to let the students change the<lb />
name when clearly everyone was<lb />
against the old one.<lb />
Secondly, we would like to say<lb />
we hold nothing against people<lb />
who are doing their jobs. We<lb />
realize there are differing points of<lb />
view on this issue, but we believe<lb />
that everyone involved knew that<lb />
what we the students were<lb />
doing was right. Also, we applaud<lb />
efforts by the university to make<lb />
ECU a part of North Carolina's<lb />
life. We just think the picture<lb />
presented should be accurate on<lb />
this matter.<lb />
Lastly, we know that in com-<lb />
parison to other events happening<lb />
in the world, this is not as impor-<lb />
tant. But that is not the point. Do<lb />
not say we shouldn't pursue a con-<lb />
cern of the students just because<lb />
it's an election year or we face the<lb />
threat of nuclear war. Of course<lb />
those things are more important.<lb />
But don't invoke them when they<lb />
aren't germane to the topic.<lb />
The East Carolinian will con-<lb />
tinue to discuss these and other im-<lb />
portant things now that this is<lb />
about to be settled.<lb />
After reading the letter from the<lb />
chairman of the ECU College<lb />
Republicans in which he portrays<lb />
Jesse Helms as a man standing tall, 1<lb />
thought it would be appropriate to<lb />
tell you the things our radical senator<lb />
is standing tall for.<lb />
He stood tall for Roberto<lb />
D'Aubuisson and his right-wing<lb />
death squads in El Salvador, going<lb />
against our country's foreign policy.<lb />
He stood tall against our grand-<lb />
parents by opposing President<lb />
Reagan's bipartisan plan to save<lb />
Social Security. He stood tall against<lb />
the North Carolina tobacco farmers<lb />
when he went back to the Senate floor<lb />
and changed his vote to be in favor of<lb />
a federal tobacco tax. Finally, he has<lb />
stood tall against us as college<lb />
students by voting against student<lb />
loans. And on Sept. 18, 1983 Sen.<lb />
Helms said of public education, "I<lb />
ain't got no dog in that fight<lb />
Who has Sen. Helms been standing<lb />
tall for? Surely not the people of<lb />
North Carolina. It should come as no<lb />
surprise when Sen. Helms refused to<lb />
talk about his record on the issues in<lb />
this campaign. The truth is, he's<lb />
voted against us and our interests<lb />
time and time again. 1 am sure that<lb />
Sen. Helms as well as College<lb />
Republicans chairman Kilcoyne is<lb />
scared to death that we are going to<lb />
find out.<lb />
David Brooks<lb />

Kim!) The Pirate encouraged the<lb />
boastful, boisterous, memorable ac-<lb />

a good time living life to its fullest.<lb />
Everyone just called him "The<lb />

he promised a player he would meet<lb />
him in the end zone and celebrate. At<lb />
game's end, he was hoarse, tired and<lb />
either experienced the thrill of victory<lb />

Now ECU has a new Pirate named<lb />
"Pee Dee Pee Dee is an image. He<lb />
is a symbol of the school and will<lb />
adorn all that is sanctioned by the<lb />
universitv. Pee Dee is also a verv hot<lb />
suit (160'degrees N. C. State 1982)<lb />
and quite uncomfortable to be a spirit<lb />
in. Mike Amans is our current Pirate,<lb />
and he does a terrific job in that suit<lb />
you can bet it is tough if not<lb />
somewhat dangerous.<lb />
The image, however, is good <lb />
kids love it and it makes good<lb />
business sense. Pee Dee, bigger than<lb />
life, is fun and can live forever<lb />

to be that, generic being changeable<lb />
without noticeable change. To be the<lb />
"team's (all the team's) mascot" he<lb />
has to be one of them run the field,<lb />
share defeat and victory.<lb />
ECU needs both pirates and I<lb />
hope there is one student in this<lb />
university who will take up my call<lb />
and become the "team's mascot" <lb />
the old Pirate. 1 further hope there<lb />
are some die-hard boosters and ad-<lb />
ministrators who understand what<lb />
school spirit is all about and will get<lb />
the old Pirate spirit and image for the<lb />
love of sport and college life.<lb />

wonderful experience and I thank the<lb />

Their record as hecklers both locally<lb />

New Sounds From<lb />
The Everly Bros.<lb />
The Everl Brothers returned to the<lb />
stage and produced EB '84, an album quite different from those in the past.<lb />
By JENNY MEADOR<lb />
Staff ttrltrr<lb />
The Everly Brothers a group<lb />
that hasn't played together since<lb />
1973 returned to the stage last<lb />
September at Uondon's Royal<lb />
Albert Hall to give themselves a<lb />
boost and let people know that<lb />
the they are back in business.<lb />
People Magazine stated, "It was<lb />
as if they had never been away<lb />
After 11 years the Everlys have<lb />
put out their latest album, EB<lb />
'84. The cut definitely reflects the<lb />
magazine's statement although<lb />
critics claim it has the sound and<lb />
the lyrics of the '80s.<lb />
EB '84 captures the sounds of<lb />
the early '60s and brings to mind<lb />
artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Biaz,<lb />
and even the Beatles. They still<lb />
combine a unique blend of<lb />
rock'n'roll, country, rockabilly,<lb />
and perhaps a tinge of bluegrass<lb />
on the album, but it makes you<lb />
wonder if that's the sound people<lb />
are looking for. If the<lb />
Woodstock gathering the<lb />
resurgence of rock 'n' roll and<lb />
flower children was ever a part<lb />
of your life, then mabye EB '84<lb />
will satisfy your desire for true<lb />
rock 'n' roll. However, unless<lb />
you're an avid rock 'n' roll buff<lb />
or in our mid 30s, chances are<lb />
Woodstock is no more than a car-<lb />
toon character to you.<lb />
Nevertheless, the Everlvs have<lb />
put together a good album of ver-<lb />
satile nostalgia. The sounds of<lb />
"On the Wings of a<lb />
Nightengale written by Paul<lb />
McCartney especially for the<lb />
album, and "Danger Danger a<lb />
tune about a provocative young<lb />
girl gone wild, reflect the upbeat<lb />
sound of the smooth but quick<lb />
rock 'n' roll. From here the<lb />
move into the love ballad, "The<lb />
Story of Me<lb />
The experimenting stops and<lb />
sweet harmonies and lyrics<lb />
prevail on side two of EB '84.<lb />
The !969 classic, "Lay, Lady,<lb />
Lay sets the tone for four new<lb />
mellow pop songs. The sweetest<lb />
and most beautiful song,<lb />
"Following the Sun describes a<lb />
lonely heart "Looking for love<lb />
somewherefollowing the sun<lb />
The relaxing tones of the guitars<lb />
and the ever-so-sweet harmony<lb />
almost causes you to sink into the<lb />
sounds. And the last song on the<lb />
album, "Asleep is so smooth<lb />
that you can't help but feel your<lb />
eyelids fall.<lb />
The Everly Brothers may not<lb />
be the most contemporary rock<lb />
duo around, but if you let them,<lb />
their music can take you back,<lb />
give you a lift, and let you relax<lb />
 in harmonv.<lb />

The Epilepsy Foundation of<lb />
America is a nationwide<lb />
organization which, with its af-<lb />
filiates across the country, works<lb />
towards preventing and controll-<lb />
ing epilepsy and helping victims<lb />
overcome it. North Carolina's<lb />
Epilepsy Association (EANC)<lb />
provides counseling, referrals to<lb />
professionals, and support to the<lb />
60,000 North Carolinians af-<lb />
flicted with the disorder.<lb />
Another one of EANC s func-<lb />
tions is to educate the public on<lb />
what to do if someone is having<lb />
an epileptic seizure. EANC sug-<lb />
gests you keep the person calm,<lb />
help him or her lie down, remove<lb />
glasses or false teeth, clear the<lb />
area of any sharp or dangerous<lb />
objects, and loosen tight<lb />
clothing.<lb />
Do not try to hold the person<lb />
down or force anything between<lb />
his or her teeth. After the seizure,<lb />
the person should be turned on<lb />
his or her side to allow saliva to<lb />
drain out of the mouth; the per-<lb />
son should also be allowed to<lb />
sleep. A doctor need only be call-<lb />
ed if: 1). it is the person's first<lb />
seizure, 2). the person has one<lb />
seizure after another without<lb />
waking up, 3). the person is not<lb />
breathing normally after the<lb />
seizure, or 4). the person is in-<lb />
jured.<lb />
Epilepsy is a common<lb />
neurological disorder which tends<lb />
to be very misunderstood. It is<lb />
not a disease, but actually a<lb />
symptom of a brain disorder.<lb />
Head injuries suffered in auto ac-<lb />
cidents are major causes of<lb />
epilepsy, along wit brain<lb />
damage at birth, chemical im-<lb />
balances, poor nutrition, infec-<lb />
tions, and high fevers.<lb />
The seizures associated with<lb />
epilepsy can be of many different<lb />
types, ranging from mild to<lb />
severe. A generalized Tonic-<lb />
Clonic seizure (Grand Mai) is the<lb />
most recognizable. In this type,<lb />
the person loses consciousness,<lb />
becomes very rigid, and the ex-<lb />
tremities may begin to jerk.<lb />
An absence seizure, or Petit<lb />
Mai, is most common in children.<lb />
Often mistaken for day dreaming<lb />
(whereby the person stares for<lb />
brief periods, usually less than<lb />
ten seconds), this type is easily<lb />
controlled with medication.<lb />
A Complex Partial is the most<lb />
common type of seizure. It in-<lb />
volves a "clouding of con-<lb />
sciousness" which may last<lb />
minutes or hours. The person<lb />
may make automatic movements<lb />
during this time, and when these<lb />
actions become prolonged or<lb />
complicated, the person could be<lb />
mistaken for having a psychiatric<lb />
disorder.<lb />
Facial and partial motor and<lb />
sensor seizures involve a jerking<lb />
motion (motor) and a sensation<lb />
(sensory) in a certain part of the<lb />
body.<lb />
Epilepsy can be treated suc-<lb />
cessfully with drugs, surgery, and<lb />
special diets.<lb />

'Footloose' Playing This Weekend<lb />
B MATTHENN Gil IIS<lb />
Miff Wnirr<lb />
Last year a motion picture<lb />
event came about like no other.<lb />
All across the country, people<lb />
were hooked on a movie not<lb />
just any movie, but one with a<lb />
simple plot (if any) and a lot of<lb />
energy. In fact, that energy,<lb />
found through the music and<lb />
dancing scattered throughout the<lb />
film, made Elashdance one of the<lb />
top films of last year, as well as<lb />
sending the soundtrack album to<lb />
the top of the charts.<lb />
This year, another film sought<lb />
to do just the same thing and<lb />
did! And this weekend, ECU has<lb />
a chance to see it freeand catch<lb />
the feeling of going Eootloose.<lb />
As the story goes, Kevin Bacon<lb />
plays a city youth who moves to a<lb />
small Texas town with his family.<lb />
But, as it turns out, he finds he's<lb />
not exactly popular with the local<lb />
folks in more ways than one. In<lb />
fact, he later finds out exactly<lb />
why from some of his<lb />
schoolmates. It seems that the<lb />
townsfolk aren't particularly<lb />
fond of his loud music and danc-<lb />
ing. Some years back, a couple of<lb />
youths, including the son of the<lb />
very influential town preacher,<lb />
were killed in a car crash after a<lb />
very wild party. After that, the<lb />
town decided (with a lot of sup-<lb />
port from the preacher himself)<lb />
to dispose of all alcohol and any<lb />
display of (gasp!) dancing, party-<lb />
ing, and rock 'n' roll music.<lb />
It's a bad situation our hero<lb />
faces. But can he go ahead and<lb />
show the people he's not wrong?<lb />
He's certainly going to try, and it<lb />
looks like he's at least got one<lb />
person on his side. Oddly<lb />
enough, it happens to be the<lb />
preacher's own daughter (played<lb />
by Lori Singer, recently from the<lb />
Fame television series), and she<lb />
thinks he's not such a bad guy.<lb />
But, can our hero hold on to her?<lb />
Of course, Kevin's got one<lb />
more thing on his side he's got<lb />
the music, and a lot of good<lb />
material throughout the film.<lb />
Much like Elashdance, the music<lb />
and dancing make this a high-<lb />
energy hit film. It also doesn't<lb />
hurt to have songs featuring ar-<lb />
tists like Sammy Hager, Bonnie<lb />
Tyler, Denice Williams, and Ken-<lb />
ny Loggins. Little wonder the<lb />
Eootloose soundtrack also<lb />
became a big hit.<lb />
Yet, unlike Elashdance,<lb />
Eootloose has a soul and deter-<lb />
mination all its own. Here, the<lb />
music and magic all come<lb />
together behind a story of a per-<lb />
son fighting for what he feels is<lb />
right.<lb />
But anyway why not just<lb />
find out for yourself? This<lb />
weekend is your only chance to<lb />
see it all. So, come down to Hen-<lb />
drix Theatre and cut loose!<lb />

Due to other obligations,<lb />
Gallagher, one of America's<lb />
most unique comedians, has<lb />
postponed his ECU performance<lb />
from tonight to Dec. 5.<lb />
Mendenhall Assistant Program<lb />
Director Jon Curtis explained<lb />
i hat Gallagher cannot attend<lb />

making advertisements for a new<lb />
television special that he just<lb />
finished.<lb />
All those holding tickets for<lb />
the performance may either be<lb />
refunded at the Central Ticket<lb />
Office or hold them until the<lb />
Dec. 5th performance.<lb />
Gallagher, known as the<lb />
master of comedy and Wizard of<lb />
Odd, is the one and only inventor<lb />
of the Sledge-O-Matic which will<lb />
be performed at ECU in Dec. For<lb />
two hours or more, this mustach-<lb />

diences in his off-beat brand of<lb />
honest observations. He calls his<lb />
comedy satire because all my<lb />

Emory said in reference to his team's 31-22<lb />
loss to North Carolina State last Saturday<lb />
"Yhen you don't stop a team's number<lb />
one play, you shouldn't win Emory said in<lb />
his weekly press conference. "Their plav was<lb />
the sprint draw, and we didn't stop it I<lb />
don't know why we didn't stop it, but that<lb />
was the key to the ballgame<lb />
The Pirates had many opportunities to<lb />
win the game, but turnovers and costly<lb />
penalties ended four drives in the second<lb />
half, that according to Emorv, all should<lb />
have resulted in field goals.<lb />
"Going into the fourth quarter I thought<lb />
we would win the ballgame Emorv said<lb />
'The score was 20-14 and we had the ball on<lb />
our own 48-yardline, but our offense broke<lb />
down They didn't stop us, we stopped<lb />
ourselves<lb />
Emory said the biggest problem confron-<lb />
ting the offensive unit at this point in the<lb />
season is thier inability to convert the impor-<lb />
tant third down plays. "When a team's<lb />
struggling, third down is the time when a lot<lb />
ol the inexperience and lack of discipline<lb />
shows up.<lb />
"Our inability to convert these situations<lb />
has kept us from using Jeff Heath, and when<lb />
you have a great kicker like Jeff, you've got<lb />
to be able to use him<lb />
A lot of the team's problems are stemming<lb />
from the defense, especially the line. "We<lb />
are not getting off of the blocks or running<lb />
real well Emory said. "We are playing<lb />
with five rookie tackles. We lost our best<lb />
defensive tackle (Joe Grinage) at Central<lb />
Michigan.<lb />
"Our noseguard is not getting off the<lb />
blocks and we are not getting any pass rush.<lb />
We played good enough in the second half to<lb />
win the tootball game on defense, but we<lb />
didn't get it done<lb />
In an attempt to tighten up the defensive<lb />
secondary, Emory has moved starting wide<lb />
receiver Stefon Adams to free safety. The<lb />
move was made to accomodate the injury of<lb />
cornerback Kevin Walker, who will<lb />
replaced by starting safety Keith Ford.<lb />
It is not known if Walker, who suffered a<lb />
fractured bone in his foot, will be ready to<lb />
play against Pittsburgh this weekend.<lb />
"We didn't move an offensive starter to<lb />
defense not to play Emory commented.<lb />
"Stefon will get his initiation as a free safety<lb />
this Saturday at 12:20 in Pittsburgh<lb />
Another key injury was to starting offen-<lb />
sive guard Rich Autry, who suffered a pulled<lb />
ligament in his foot. He is doubtful for this<lb />
Saturday's game, which is likely to hinder<lb />
the Pirates already sputtering offense.<lb />
Looking ahead to the Panthers, Emory<lb />
described the contest as a game between two<lb />
struggling football programs. "We're 1-4,<lb />
and we have to go to Pittsburgh and they're<lb />
0-4. It's going to be a game between two<lb />
teams that are having a lot of problems<lb />
"I don't know why this season has bounc-<lb />
ed the way.it has, but we've got a chance to<lb />
beat a very good football team in Pittsburgh,<lb />
and that's what will be on our minds this<lb />
week<lb />
The Panthers are off to their worst start<lb />
since 1972, when they went 1-10. They have<lb />
opened the season with losses to Brigham<lb />
Young, Oklahoma, Temple and last week to<lb />
West Virginia, 28-10. But their poor start<lb />
does not hide the fact that they're a good<lb />
football team.<lb />
"Pitt is the best 0-4 team in the country<lb />
Emory said. "They have some of the best<lb />
personnel in the country they've just had<lb />
a tough season<lb />
The Panthers are led by offensive tackle<lb />
Bill Fralic, an Ail-American and a strong<lb />
contender for the Outland Trophy, given an-<lb />
nually to the nation's best lineman.<lb />
Emory is disappointed with the way this<lb />
season has gone for his young squad, but is<lb />
far from giving up on his team. "We're im-<lb />
proving every week. In life, it's not how you<lb />
start out, its how you finish football is the<lb />
same.<lb />
"We've only played five rounds of an<lb />
eleven round fight. We've been down, but<lb />
we're not out. We're going to come up sw-<lb />
inging, and we'll be looking for a knockout<lb />

Spikers Fall To Duke<lb />
Bv TONY BROWN<lb />
stff Whiff<lb />
The ECU volleyball record fell<lb />
to 2-5 Tuesday night as Duke<lb />
University swept three straight<lb />
games 15-3, 15-6 and 15-9 to win<lb />
the best-of-three match.<lb />
Now with a record of 12-1, the<lb />
Blue Devils raced to a 9-0 advan-<lb />
tage in the first game before the<lb />
Pirates tallied on an illegal hit by<lb />
Duke to break the scoring<lb />
drought. The ECU offense only<lb />
added two straight points during<lb />
Ann Guida's service before the<lb />
Devils closed out the game with<lb />
four straight points.<lb />
ECU scored first in the second<lb />
game to lead 1-0, but the Pirates<lb />
seemed stunned by the quick<lb />
opening loss as Duke scored four<lb />
in a row during the serve of Cara<lb />
Geyling to lead 4-1.<lb />
After a net serve by ECU, the<lb />
situation got even worse as the<lb />
Blue Devils took six straight<lb />
before a sideout, increasing their<lb />
lead to 10-1. The Pirate offense<lb />
again failed to score and three in<lb />
a row went to Duke, making it<lb />
13-1.<lb />
After another sideout and a<lb />
Devil point, East Carolina's of-<lb />
fense finally woke up as Ann<lb />
Guida opened her service with an<lb />
ace, which seemed to fire up the<lb />
Pirates as they added four more<lb />
in a five straight string, but one<lb />
more point for Duke then decid-<lb />
ed the game.<lb />
ECU stiffened as a result of<lb />
their improved play and the third<lb />
game started with a number of<lb />
sideouts before the Blue Devils<lb />
scored, but the Pirates came right<lb />
back on an service ace by Traci<lb />
Smith to tie the score 1-1. Donna<lb />
Zeconis' superb block gave the<lb />
Pirates only their second lead at<lb />
that point in the series as Duke<lb />
seemed to be rattled by the<lb />
changing momentum.<lb />
ECU added four separate<lb />
tallies to increase the lead to 6-1,<lb />
but once again the balance chang-<lb />
ed and the Pirate defense seemed<lb />
confused as Duke closed the gap<lb />
with three consecutive points,<lb />
then two more to tie the game at<lb />
six.<lb />
ECU temporarily halted the<lb />
Blue Devil rally, scoring two dur-<lb />
ing Mary Barnham's service in-<lb />
cluding a nice kill by Traci Smith,<lb />
but the Pirates once again seemed<lb />
to get disorganized as several<lb />
balls fell untouched while players<lb />
expected others to return the ball.<lb />
ECU responded with one more<lb />
point to assume the lead for the<lb />
third time, but the balance sud-<lb />
denly and decisively switched as<lb />
Duke got the service and tied it<lb />
up. They continued to the end as<lb />
the Blue Devil's fine server Susan<lb />
Wilson got rolling, serving the<lb />
final six points consecutively to<lb />
give Duke the game and match.<lb />
"I just didn't have them men-<lb />
tally prepared said Coach Im-<lb />
ogene Turner. "We were capable<lb />
of competing with them, but our<lb />
team was awed by their record"<lb />
Ann Guida put in another<lb />
good performance, with some<lb />
good serves in particular. Traci<lb />
Smith had several excellent kills<lb />
and played strong on offense and<lb />
defense.<lb />
The Pirates travel to meet the<lb />
Tar Heels of North Carolina in<lb />
Chapel Hill tonight, then to<lb />
Wilson on Monday to play Atlan-<lb />
tic Christian at 7 p.m.<lb />
This Saturday the ECU foot-<lb />
ball team will will take to the field<lb />
with whom many consider the<lb />
greatest offensive lineman in col-<lb />
legiate football history, Pitt-<lb />
sburgh 's Bill Fralic.<lb />
PITTSBURGH Bill Fralic<lb />
should be painted gray. When he<lb />
is finished with football, he<lb />
souldn't retire. He should be put<lb />
in mothballs.<lb />
A few years ago, the University<lb />
of Oklahoma had a lineman<lb />
eveyone called the "U.S.S.<lb />
Vaughan He was battleship<lb />
big.<lb />
Compared to the Univer ity of<lb />
Pittsburgh's Fralic, the U.S.S.<lb />
Vaughan was a PT Boat.<lb />
If the Titanic had been as stur-<lb />
dy as the 6-foot-5, 285-pound<lb />
Fralic, no overgrown ice cube<lb />
could have sunk it.<lb />
His name may not be<lb />
Theismann, but there is neither<lb />
rhyme nor reason why Fralic<lb />
should not win the Heisman<lb />
Trophy, which is, allegedly,<lb />
awarded to the best college foot-<lb />
ball player.<lb />
In fact, there is afoot in the<lb />
land a movement long overdue. It<lb />
is time an interior lineman a<lb />
center, guard or tackle won<lb />
the Heisman.<lb />
If Heisman voters are fair and<lb />
Fralic has the expected season, he<lb />
is as good as gold.<lb />
But that, unfortunately doesn't<lb />
mean he will win.<lb />
The last nine Heisman winners<lb />
have been running backs. A<lb />
quarierback, though not Notre<lb />
Dame's Joe Theismann, occa-<lb />
sionally interrupts the continuity.<lb />
The accomplishments of the<lb />
runners and throwers are easily<lb />
measured. Whereas who watches<lb />
linemen, except to see how dirty<lb />
and bloody they have become.<lb />
Pitt will put the lie to statistical<lb />
shortcomings this season. Direc-<lb />
tor Jim O'Brien has assigned so-<lb />
meone to record Fralic's pan-<lb />
cakes.<lb />
Fralic is no short-order chef.<lb />
He's a tall-order filler and if peo-<lb />
ple can be made aware of this,<lb />
they will flock to his support.<lb />
Thus Heisman voters the<lb />
print and electronic media will<lb />
be kept appraised of the number<lb />
of opponents Fralic flattens like<lb />
pancakes.<lb />
Pitt's '83 highlight film should<lb />
have been sponsored by Aunt<lb />
Jemima: It's full of Fralic pan-<lb />
cakes.<lb />
Interested observers need not<lb />
wait for statistics or the film to<lb />
judge how thoroughly the Pan-<lb />
thers' left tackle can dominate a<lb />
defensive lineman or line.<lb />
"All you have to do Fralic<lb />
said, "is watch the direction the<lb />
man in front of you<lb />
The odds are 100-to-l that it<lb />
will be backward.<lb />
If Jimmy the Greek decides to<lb />
set odds on Fralic's Heisman<lb />
chances, they could be higher.<lb />
"I've been told he can't win<lb />
it O'Brien said. "I know, I<lb />
couldn't get him on the cover of<lb />
Street and Smith's Yearbook.<lb />
They said they don't put linemen<lb />
on the cover<lb />
They should, because Pitt<lb />
offensive coordinator Joe Moore<lb />
is right when he says leading can-<lb />
didate quarteback Doug Flutie of<lb />
Boston College is not in Fralic's<lb />
class as a college football player.<lb />
People should realize there are a<lb />
lot ot great football players at<lb />
positions other than tailback and<lb />
quarterback<lb />
The football fan has been lear-<lb />
ning to appreciate the less ob-<lb />
vious. Merlin Olson and Deacon<lb />
Jones drew attention to first the<lb />
Los Angeles Rams defensive<lb />
front four and. in turn, all defen-<lb />
sive linemen.<lb />
The recognition has spread to<lb />
defensive backs, and. of course,<lb />
receivers always have been ap-<lb />
preciated, albeit not as totallv as<lb />
those who get them the ball.<lb />
In the latest seasons, I'nivrsity<lb />
of Nebraska offensive linemen,<lb />
center Dave Remington and<lb />
guard Dean Steinkuhler. at-<lb />
tracted attention. Of course, part<lb />
of the reason is that thev were<lb />
playing on a top-ranked team and<lb />
blocking for Mike Rozier. who<lb />
won the Heisman instead of<lb />
them.<lb />
"The time is past due for of-<lb />
fenisve linemen said Pitt runn-<lb />
ing back coach Andy L'rbamc.<lb />
who coached Fralic in high<lb />
school. "If an offensive lineman<lb />
can't win the Heisman, it should<lb />
be called a skill-position trophy<lb />

season<lb />
Treble (No. 3 singles) and<lb />
Bagley (No. 6 singles) both took<lb />
three-set victories. Each player<lb />
won the first set of their match by<lb />
the score of 6-2, before dropping<lb />
"hard fought" second sets. In<lb />
the third set, each player came<lb />
through to score the only match<lb />
victories of the day for ECU.<lb />
Sherman was also pleased with<lb />
the play of Greg Willis, saying<lb />
her No. 1 singles player turned in<lb />
a picture perfect first set of tennis<lb />
against ACC's Jagudish Gowdu.<lb />
However, several second and<lb />
third set errors cost Willis the<lb />
match 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Although<lb />
Willis was unable to achieve vic-<lb />
tory, Sherman said it was the<lb />
finest match Willis has played in<lb />
his last three years at ECU.<lb />
At the end of single's play.<lb />
ACC held a slim 4-2 advantage,<lb />
but went on to sweep the doubles'<lb />
matches for the final margin of<lb />
victory. "I was very disappointed<lb />
with the play of our No. 1<lb />
doubles team of Treble and<lb />
Creech Sherman said. "They<lb />
were outplayed by ACC in all<lb />
aspects of the game.<lb />
"We have a great deal of work<lb />
to do as an entire team to im-<lb />
prove our doubles play Sher-<lb />
man continued. "We will be<lb />
working hard on this to prepare<lb />
for our next match<lb />
ECU now falls to 1-4 on the<lb />
fall season, and will be in action<lb />
again Friday at 3 p.m. when thev<lb />
host High Point College on the<lb />
Minges tennis courts.<lb />
