It looks as though Spring is here to stay, and ECL students are<lb />
making the most of it. Happy hours at local bars and restaurants<lb />

brief break from school is made all the more enjoyable by warm,<lb />

Director Of Counseling Center Resigns<lb />
On June 22. 1983 an era will<lb />
end at the ECU Counseling<lb />
Center. Dr. George Weigand, the<lb />
founder of the center, will step<lb />
down after 20 years as the center's<lb />
director.<lb />
Weigand came to ECU in 1963<lb />
from the University of Maryland<lb />
where he was director of the Of-<lb />
fice of Intermediate Education.<lb />
"The main reason 1 came was<lb />
because the only thing they<lb />
wanted me to do is counsel<lb />
students nothing else<lb />
Weigand saidThat's what I<lb />
wanted to do<lb />
Weigand, who received his<lb />
bachelor's degree in Psychology<lb />
from Johns Hopkins University<lb />
and his doctorate from Maryland,<lb />
is a licensed psychologist.<lb />
Weigand specializes in learning<lb />
study skills and relaxiation<lb />
therapy.<lb />
Weigand claims that relax ation<lb />
therapy has become respective in<lb />
the last ten years. He has also<lb />
authored two books:How to Suc-<lb />
ceed in High School andCollege<lb />
Orientation.<lb />
When Weigand began the<lb />
Counseling Center, he had one<lb />
other counselor. The staff has<lb />
grown to five over the years. "The<lb />
most neglected area around is<lb />
knowing how to work smarter<lb />
rather than harder Weigand<lb />
said, adding that working longer<lb />
and harder is not always the<lb />
answer.<lb />
said this person should never<lb />
answer a question unless they<lb />
have an answer; never reer<lb />
anybody just to get rid of them<lb />
and make direct referrals when<lb />
possible.<lb />
Before the establishment of the<lb />
Counseling Center, Weigand said<lb />
there was no central office where<lb />
counseling for students was con-<lb />
ducted from. The infirmary was<lb />
chiefly responsible for consulting<lb />
services.<lb />
Weigand said the Student<lb />

this is when a student comes in<lb />
and says 'you helped me ac-<lb />

"The kind of feedback you get<lb />
from the people you work with<lb />
are the kinds of rewards you get in<lb />
this business<lb />
"George is a unique person<lb />

Eight ECU students and alumni<lb />
participated in the first campus<lb />
"soap box forum" in front of the<lb />
Student Supply Store Thursday.<lb />
The soap box forum was begun by<lb />
a group of students who modeled<lb />
their idea after the pit at UNC-<lb />
Chapel Hill, where students<lb />
gather to express their opinions.<lb />
According to Jeff Roberson,<lb />
one of the coordinators of the<lb />
event, the forum was a success<lb />
and will probably continue as a<lb />
regular activity on campus.<lb />
The group set up a public ad-<lb />
dress system with a sign welcom-<lb />
ing students and faculty to express<lb />
their opinion on the situation in<lb />
Nicaragua. Roberson claims the<lb />
group will be looking for topic<lb />
suggestions for future forums.<lb />
Student response to the forum<lb />
was generally warm and positive,<lb />
although there were some hecklers<lb />
at various points during the<lb />
forum.<lb />
Six of the eight speakers were<lb />
basically opposed to the United<lb />
States' role in Central America<lb />
and Nicaragua, while two other<lb />
speakers supported American in-<lb />
tervention in the region.<lb />
Jay Stone was the first speaker.<lb />
Stone recounted several recent in-<lb />
cidents where he claimed the<lb />
United States had been involved<lb />
in overthrowing and undermining<lb />
foreign governments. "The<lb />
United States' government is<lb />
totally involved in repression in<lb />
Central and South America<lb />
Stone said, "and it seems to me<lb />
that what we have to do as citizens<lb />
is educate ourselves and others on<lb />
this subject<lb />
The second speaker was student<lb />
Gordon Ipock who agreed with<lb />
United States' policy in Central<lb />
America. Ipock, a military<lb />
veteran, said he had traveled ex-<lb />
tensively. Ipock claimed that<lb />
Stone was idealistic and his prin-<lb />
ciples would never work in reality.<lb />
"It's a dirty world, if some people<lb />
get killed and bloodied, I mean,<lb />
that's just the way it is Ipock<lb />
said. "I'd rather see it happening<lb />
down there (in Nicaragua) then in<lb />
Texas or Louisiana<lb />
ECU anthropology graduate<lb />
Kerri Nolan, who recently return-<lb />
ed from Central America, claimed<lb />
that media accounts of the situa-<lb />
tion in Nicaragua were exag-<lb />
gerated and untrue.<lb />
Nolan, who spent a month<lb />
travelmg in Nicaragua, said she<lb />
initially feared for her life, but,<lb />
after contact with the Nicaraguan<lb />
people, her fears were alleviated.<lb />
Nolan praised the government<lb />
for gains made in social areas. She<lb />
noted that illiteracy had dropped<lb />
from 60 percent to 12 percent in<lb />
the three years the Sandinistas<lb />
have been in power.<lb />
Nolan claimed the majority of<lb />
Nicaraguans support the new<lb />
government and the United States<lb />
should begin negotiation to for-<lb />
ward peace in the region. She said<lb />
continued support for Reagan ad-<lb />
ministration policies toward Cen-<lb />
tral America could result in a war<lb />
involving U. S. troops.<lb />
Another speaker, student Joe<lb />
Admire, supported Ipock's posi-<lb />
tion and said communist expan-<lb />
sionism needed to be stopped in<lb />
Central America. Admire noted<lb />
that under Communism freedom<lb />
of the press, freedom of speech,<lb />
freedom of religion and assembly<lb />
would not be permitted. "We (the<lb />
United States) do have a respon-<lb />
sibility to protect this hemisphere<lb />
from foreign military in-<lb />
terference Admire said.<lb />
There was also a letter from<lb />
Congressman Walter B. Jones<lb />
(D-N.C.) read during the forum.<lb />
Jones had sent the letter to<lb />
Catholic Campus Minister Helen<lb />
Shondell. "As of this time, 1 do<lb />
not feel that any further military<lb />
aid to these countries (Guatemala.<lb />
El Salvador, Honduras and<lb />
Nicaragua) would be wise he<lb />
said.<lb />
"I think the forum was a great<lb />
idea said one student who<lb />
listened to the speakers. "I hope it<lb />
becomes a regular event<lb />
The Soap Box Forum was<lb />
organized by several students with<lb />
support from the ECU Newman<lb />
Center. People wishing to suggest<lb />
topic ideas for future forums are<lb />
asked to contact Mickey Skid-<lb />
more at the Newman Center. Any<lb />
ECU student, faculty or staff<lb />
member is eligible to speak during<lb />
the forums.<lb />
Over the years, Weigand said Center work closely together and sonal friend for almost 15 years.<lb />
the center has worked with<lb />
thousands of ECU students on a<lb />
number of problems. Most of<lb />
them are academic, informational<lb />
or social, he said.<lb />
Weigand said a properly run<lb />
counseling center begins with a<lb />
Weigand is nationally respected well-trained person to make first<lb />
for his work in both areas, contact with the client. Weigand<lb />
Sign Language Sought As Alternative<lb />
do direct referrals on a regular<lb />
basis.<lb />
Counseling is an information<lb />
getting and giving service,<lb />
Weigand said. It is designed to<lb />
help clients to make adjustments<lb />
they need to make.<lb />
Weigand said counseling<lb />
students is the highlight of his<lb />
Weigand said he would con-<lb />
tinue conseling work while in<lb />
retirement "primarily<lb />

An unusual bacteria affecting<lb />
the liver and colon has been ten-<lb />
tatively named the cause of death<lb />
for ECU student Robbie Sue<lb />
Gregory, who died early Thursday<lb />
morning. The 22-year-old junior<lb />
communications major from<lb />
Raleigh became ill Wednesday<lb />
night in her room in Garrett dor-<lb />

other hearing impaired students asking a blind person to do a<lb />

Walkinstik, who is progressive-<lb />

substitute American sign language<lb />
in place of the requirement.<lb />
A hearing impaired student is<lb />
now required to complete 12<lb />
hours of foreign language, just<lb />
like everyone else.<lb />
According to an official<lb />
memorandum of the College of<lb />
Arts and Science, hearing im-<lb />

Washington, D.C said he<lb />
thought Walkinstik's complaint<lb />
was valid. He said he hoped the<lb />
matter could be resolved out of<lb />
court.<lb />
ECU's hearing impaired pro-<lb />
gram, begun in 1977, is headed by<lb />
Ernest strongly ad-<lb />
a point where students who are<lb />
competent in other courses are<lb />
simply not able to deal with the<lb />
problems of an oral foreign<lb />
language. It's not as simple for<lb />
students as just taking the book<lb />
and reading on their own. That<lb />
doesn't work for a person with a<lb />
hearing loss.<lb />
"Take Latin, for example. The<lb />
Latin book is written for persons<lb />
with normal hearing, and it has<lb />
oral drills which help the student<lb />
learn the rules of Latin by oral<lb />
repetition Ernest explained.<lb />
Ernest said a second problem is<lb />
that many hearing<lb />
University regulations state that<lb />
hearing impaired students should<lb />
not be exempted, but "emphasis<lb />
should be placed on cultural<lb />
knowledge and reading and com- v<lb />

students are having problems comparing Latin grammar with<lb />
graduating because of the foreign English. Although oral skills are<lb />
language requirements Ernest not emphasized at ECU, they are<lb />
used in the class to help students<lb />
with syntax and semantics.<lb />
Susan McDaniel, associate vice<lb />
chancellor for academic affairs,<lb />
said she felt sufficient alternatives<lb />

major goal of proficiency in<lb />

"American Sign language<lb />

need that a foreign language does;<lb />
it is not a cultural addition to the<lb />
program McDaniel said.<lb />
Because of the involvement of a<lb />
lawyer in this case, several ad-<lb />

to make any statements to the<lb />
press.<lb />

The type of bacteria has not<lb />

Pitt County Medical Examiner<lb />
L. Stan Harris said a final autopsy<lb />
report would probably be<lb />
available by Wednesday. He said<lb />
preliminary tests indicated<lb />
Gregory had suffered from the<lb />
liver infection for about two<lb />
weeks and had uncommon com-<lb />

Harris said the infection would<lb />
have been easier to treat if<lb />
Gregory had sought medical at-<lb />

Gregory was treated for a high<lb />

most neglected area around is<lb />
knowing how to work smarter<lb />
rather than harder Weigand<lb />
said, adding that working longer<lb />
and harder is not always the<lb />
answer.<lb />
Over the years, Weigand said<lb />
the center has worked with<lb />
thousands of ECU students on a<lb />
number of problems. Most of<lb />
them are academic, informational<lb />
or social, he said.<lb />
Weigand said a properly run<lb />
counseling center begins with a<lb />
well-trained person to make first<lb />
contact with the client. Weigand<lb />
said this person should never<lb />
answer a question unless they<lb />
have an answer; never refer<lb />
anybody just to get rid of them<lb />
and make direct referrals when<lb />
possible.<lb />
Before the establishment of the<lb />
Counseling Center, Weigand said<lb />
there was no central office where<lb />
counseling for students was con-<lb />
ducted from. The infirmary was<lb />
chiefly responsible for consulting<lb />
services.<lb />
Weigand said the Student<lb />
Health Center and Counseling<lb />
Center work closely together and<lb />
do direct referrals on a regular<lb />
basis.<lb />
Counseling is an information<lb />
getting and giving service,<lb />
Weigand said. It is designed to<lb />
help clients to make adjustments<lb />
they need to make.<lb />
Weigand said counseling<lb />
students is the highlight of his<lb />
career. "The rewards you get for<lb />
this is when a student comes in<lb />
and says 'you helped me ac-<lb />
complish what I wanted you<lb />
changed my life ' Weigand said.<lb />
"The kind of feedback you get<lb />
from the people you work with<lb />
are the kinds of rewards you get in<lb />
this business<lb />
"George is a unique person<lb />
said ECU chemistry professor<lb />
David Lunny. "It will be very dif-<lb />
ficult to find an individual to do<lb />
the job as well as he does it<lb />
Lunny has been Weigand's per-<lb />
sonal friend for almost 15 years.<lb />
Eight ECU studen's and alumni<lb />
participated in the first campus<lb />
"soap box forum" in front of the<lb />
Student Supply Store Thursday.<lb />
The soap box forum was begun by<lb />
a group of students who modeled<lb />
their idea after the pit at UNC-<lb />
Chapel Hill, where students<lb />
gather to express their opinions.<lb />
According to Jeff Roberson,<lb />
one of the coordinators of the<lb />
event, the forum was a success<lb />
and will probably continue as a<lb />
regular activity on campus.<lb />
The group set up a public ad-<lb />
dress system with a sign welcom-<lb />
ing students and faculty to express<lb />
their opinion on the situation in<lb />
Nicaragua. Roberson claims the<lb />
group will be looking for topic<lb />
suggestions for future forums.<lb />
Student response to the forum<lb />
was generally warm and positive,<lb />
although there were some hecklers<lb />
at various points during the<lb />
forum.<lb />
Six of the eight speakers were<lb />
basically opposed to the United<lb />
States' role in Central America<lb />
and Nicaragua, while two other<lb />
speakers supported American in-<lb />
tervention in the region.<lb />
Jay Stone was the first speaker.<lb />
Stone recounted several recent in-<lb />
cidents where he claimed the<lb />
United States had been involved<lb />
in overthrowing and undermining<lb />
foreign governments. 'The<lb />
United States' government is<lb />
totally involved in repression in<lb />
Central and South America<lb />
Stone said, "and it seems to me<lb />
that what we have to do as citizens<lb />
is educate ourselves and others on<lb />
this subject<lb />
The second speaker was student<lb />
Gordon Ipock who agreed with<lb />
United States' policy in Central<lb />
America. Ipock, a military<lb />
veteran, said he had traveled ex-<lb />
tensively. Ipock claimed that<lb />
Stone was idealistic and his prin-<lb />
ciples would never work in reality.<lb />
"It's a dirty world, if some people<lb />
get killed and bloodied. I mean,<lb />
that's just the way it is Ipock<lb />
said. "I'd rather see it happening<lb />
down there (in Nicaragua) then in<lb />
Texas or Louisiana<lb />
ECU anthropology graduate<lb />
Kern Nolan, who recently return-<lb />
ed from Central America, claimed<lb />
that media accounts of the situa-<lb />
tion in Nicaragua were exag-<lb />
gerated and untrue.<lb />
Nolan, who spent a month<lb />
traveling in Nicaragua, said she<lb />
initially feared for her life. but.<lb />
after contact with the Nicaraguan<lb />
people, her fears were alleviated<lb />
Nolan praised the government<lb />
for gains made in social areas. She<lb />
noted that illiteracy had dropped<lb />
from 60 percent to 12 percent in<lb />
the three years the Sandinistas<lb />
have been in power.<lb />
Nolan claimed 'he majority of<lb />
Nicaraguans support the new<lb />
government and the United States<lb />
should begin negotiation to for-<lb />
ward peace in the region. She said<lb />
continued Niipport for Reagan ad-<lb />
ministration policies toward Cen-<lb />
tral America could result in a war<lb />
involving I . S. troops.<lb />
Another speaker, student Joe<lb />
Admire, supported lpock's posi-<lb />
tion and said communist expan-<lb />
sionism needed to be stopped in<lb />
Central America. Admire noted<lb />
that under Communism freedom<lb />
of the press, freedom of speech.<lb />
freedom of religion and assembly<lb />
would not be permitted. "We (the<lb />
United States) do have a respon-<lb />
sibility to protect this hemisphere<lb />
from foreign military in-<lb />
terference Admire said.<lb />
There was also a letter from<lb />
Congressman Walter B. JoneN<lb />
(D-N.C.) read during the forum.<lb />
Jones had sent the letter to<lb />
Catholic Campus Minister Helen<lb />
Shondell. "As of this time. 1 do<lb />
not feel that any further militarv<lb />
aid to these countries (Guatemala.<lb />
El Salvador, Honduras and<lb />
Nicaragua) would be wise he<lb />
said.<lb />
"I think the forum was a great<lb />
idea said one student who<lb />
listened to the speakers. "I hope it<lb />
becomes a regular event<lb />
The Soap Box Forum wa-<lb />
organized by several students with<lb />
support from the ECU Newman<lb />
Center. People wishing to sugges<lb />
topic ideas for future forums are<lb />
asked to contact Mickey Skid-<lb />
more at the Newman Center. Anv<lb />
ECU student, faculty or staff<lb />
member is eligible to speak during<lb />
the forums.<lb />
Weigand said he would con-<lb />
tinue conseling work while in<lb />
retirement "primarily<lb />
volunteer work where it doesn't<lb />
matter to me where I counsel<lb />
students, or where 1 work with<lb />
students, as long as I am working<lb />

Sign Language Sought As Alternative<lb />
Deaf Student Opposes Language Rule<lb />
i<lb />
B MlkEHAMER<lb />
ECU student Ed Walkinstik has<lb />
filed a complaint against ECU in<lb />
an attempt to exempt himself and<lb />
other hearing impaired students<lb />
from current foreign language re-<lb />
quirements for a bachelor of arts<lb />
degree.<lb />
Walkinstik, who is progressive-<lb />
ly losing his hearing, is trying to<lb />
substitute American sign language<lb />
in place of the requirement.<lb />
A hearing impaired student is<lb />
now required to complete 12<lb />
hours of foreign language, just<lb />
like everyone else.<lb />
According to an official<lb />
memorandum of the College of<lb />
Arts and Science, hearing im-<lb />
paired students should be<lb />
evaluated individually in regard to<lb />
completing the degree re-<lb />
quirements.<lb />
University regulations state that<lb />
hearing impaired students should<lb />
not be exempted, but "emphasis<lb />
should be placed on cultural<lb />
knowledge and reading and com-<lb />
position skills with appropriate<lb />
modifications of instruction and<lb />
testing techniques. These em-<lb />
phases should replace the stressing<lb />
of oral skill At present, some<lb />
students are urged to take four<lb />
semesters of Latin.<lb />
According to Walkinstik,<lb />
"asking a deaf person to take a<lb />
foreign language is equivalent to<lb />
asking a blind person to do a<lb />
review on a movie. I asked for<lb />
American Sign Language. The ad-<lb />
ministration said I could have it as<lb />
an elective, but I had to have<lb />
Latin<lb />
Marc Charmatz, attorney for<lb />
the National Association of the<lb />
Deaf Legal Defense Fund in<lb />
Washington, D.C said he<lb />
thought Walkinstik's complaint<lb />
was valid. He said he hoped the<lb />
matter could be resolved out of<lb />
court.<lb />
ECU'S hearing impaired pro-<lb />
gram, begun in 1977, is headed by<lb />
Mike Ernest. Ernest strongly ad-<lb />
vocates that hearing impaired<lb />
students be allowed to take<lb />
American sign language.<lb />
"Five hearing impaired<lb />
students are having problems<lb />
graduating because of the foreign<lb />
language requirements Ernest<lb />
said, "and another student has to<lb />
take Spanish 1004, an oral course.<lb />
We don't have an interpreter, and<lb />
there is no language culture class<lb />
for her to take<lb />
"The administration realizes<lb />
that a lot of students have pro-<lb />
blems with foreign languages and<lb />
that foreign languages are dif-<lb />
ficult Ernest said, "but there is<lb />
a point where students who are<lb />
competent in other courses are<lb />
simply not able to deal with the<lb />
problems of an oral foreign<lb />
language. It's not as simple for<lb />
students as just taking the book<lb />
and reading on their own. That<lb />
doesn't work for a person with a<lb />
hearing loss.<lb />
"Take Latin, for example. The<lb />
Latin book is written for persons<lb />
with normal hearing, and it has<lb />
oral drills which help the student<lb />
learn the rules of Latin by oral<lb />
repetition Ernest explained.<lb />
Ernest said a second problem is<lb />
that many hearing impaired<lb />
students do not have a good grasp<lb />
of English grammar because of<lb />
problems in their earlier educa-<lb />
tion. They therefore have trouble<lb />
comparing Latin grammar with<lb />
English. Although oral skills are<lb />
not emphasized at ECU, they are<lb />
used in the class to help students<lb />
with syntax and semantics.<lb />
Susan McDaniel, associate vice<lb />
chancellor for academic affairs,<lb />
said she felt sufficient alternatives<lb />
are currently being offered to<lb />
hearing impaired students. "Latin<lb />
is recommended for the hearing<lb />
impaired. It is not taught with the<lb />
major goal of proficiency in<lb />
speaking, but the structure of<lb />
Latin is good for getting into the<lb />
structures of languages.<lb />
"American Sign language<lb />
doesn't fulfill the same curricular<lb />
need that a foreign language does;<lb />
it is not a cultural addition to the<lb />
program McDaniel said.<lb />
Because of the involvement of a<lb />
lawyer in this case, several ad-<lb />
ministration officials have refused<lb />
to make any statements to the<lb />
press.<lb />
Wayne Barrow is a hearing im-<lb />
paired senior psychology major<lb />
who is having trouble graduating<lb />
because of the foreign language<lb />
requirement. "I'm only lacking<lb />
nine hours he said. "I'm going<lb />
down for the third time in Spanish<lb />
II. It's becoming extremely<lb />
frustrating. My hearing loss will<lb />
probably get to be worse, and so<lb />
I'll have to learn American sign<lb />
language as a third language.<lb />

An unusual bacteria affecting<lb />
the liver and colon has been ten-<lb />
tatively named the cause of death<lb />
for ECU student Robbie Sue<lb />
Gregory, who died early Thursday<lb />
morning. The 22-year-old junior<lb />
communications major from<lb />
Raleigh became ill Wednesday<lb />
night in her room in Garrett dor-<lb />
mitory, was taken to the Student<lb />
Health Center and died a few<lb />
hours later at Pitt County<lb />
Memorial Hospital.<lb />
The type of bacteria has not<lb />
been determined, but it is not<lb />
thought to be communicable.<lb />
Pitt County Medical Examiner<lb />
L. Stan Harris said a final autopsy<lb />
report would probably be<lb />
available bv Wednesdav. He said<lb />
preliminarv tests indicated<lb />
Gregory had suffered from the<lb />
liver infection for about two<lb />
weeks and had uncommon com-<lb />
plications.<lb />
Harris said the infection would<lb />
have been easier to treat if<lb />
Gregory had sought medical at-<lb />
tention sooner. "It might not<lb />
have been fatal had she not had<lb />
the final seizure Harris said.<lb />
Gregory was treated for a high<lb />
fever at the ECU Student Health<lb />
Center before she was taken to the<lb />
hospital. A doctor speaking for<lb />
the health center declined to give<lb />
details on Gregory's treatment<lb />
there pending completion of the<lb />
autopsy report and further in-<lb />
vestigation.<lb />

N.C. Has 'Terrible Reputation' In Farm Worker Treatment<lb />
North Carolina<lb />
farm workers are<lb />
denied collective<lb />
bargaining rights,<lb />
worker compensation<lb />
coverage, protection<lb />
from hazardous<lb />
pestiticides and ade-<lb />
quate field sanitation<lb />
facilities claims Joan<lb />
Preiss, a farm worker<lb />
rights advocate, who<lb />
spoke at ECU on Fri-<lb />
day.<lb />
Priess, chairperson<lb />
of Triangle Friends of<lb />
the United Farm-<lb />
workers, also claims<lb />
farm workers are<lb />
sometimes enslaved<lb />
by crew leaders who<lb />
threaten their lives.<lb />
Priess claimed the<lb />
1982 slavery convic-<lb />
ions in Nash County<lb />
jvere indicative of the<lb />
problems the state<lb />
faces in this area.<lb />
Priess quoted the<lb />
findings from a 1980<lb />
N.C. Department of<lb />
Agriculture study<lb />
which indicated that<lb />
the state ranks last<lb />
among the 20 leading<lb />
agricultural states in<lb />
terms of wages and<lb />
laws intended to pro-<lb />
tect farm workers.<lb />
She claims North<lb />
Carolina does not en-<lb />
force child labor laws<lb />
in farm-related work.<lb />
Priess said farm<lb />
workers have been<lb />
denied rights that<lb />
other workers have<lb />
had for decades.<lb />
"North Carolina has<lb />
a terrible reputation<lb />
Priess said. "One of<lb />
the worst things that<lb />
can happen to a farm<lb />
worker is to come to<lb />
North Carolina<lb />
Priess has worked<lb />
with Triangle Friends<lb />
for ten years. The<lb />
group operates as an<lb />
a.m of the United<lb />
Farm Workers started<lb />
in 1962 by Ceasar<lb />
Chavez in California.<lb />
She also works with<lb />
National Farm<lb />
Worker Ministry<lb />
which is sponsoring<lb />
Farm Worker Week<lb />
from now until May<lb />
1.<lb />
Preiss said the goal<lb />
of the two organiza-<lb />
tions was to inform<lb />
the public on the farm<lb />
worker issue and<lb />
motivate people to<lb />
work for a change.<lb />
Preiss said lobbying<lb />
and product boycotts<lb />
were the two most ef-<lb />
fective ways of help-<lb />
ing the plight of the<lb />
farm worker.<lb />
Preiss said legisla-<lb />
tion currently being<lb />
considered by the<lb />
General Assembly on<lb />
the slavery issue<lb />
would, "if adopted,<lb />
be saying North<lb />
Carolina won't sanc-<lb />
tion it in our midst<lb />
Preiss said growers<lb />
are calling the statute<lb />
an insult to their<lb />
reputations and are<lb />
lobbying against the<lb />
bill. "They (growers)<lb />
don't want to be held<lb />
responsible for<lb />
anything Preiss<lb />
said. "The crew<lb />
leader system in-<lb />
sulates them from<lb />
responsibility<lb />
The proposed law<lb />
would hold growers<lb />
responsible if they<lb />
hire people who hold<lb />
others in slavery.<lb />
Preiss asked her au-<lb />
dience to boycott the<lb />
products of Red<lb />
Coach, distributors of<lb />
iceberg lettuce and<lb />
CampbelFs-Libby,<lb />
distributors of several<lb />
types of food pro-<lb />
ducts. She claimed<lb />
that both companies<lb />
deny basic rights to<lb />
workers who pick<lb />
their crops.<lb />
Preiss said farm<lb />
workers were<lb />
"exploited and ex-<lb />
cluded" and that<lb />
organizing was the<lb />
only way they would<lb />
achieve justice. "We<lb />
support these organiz-<lb />
ing efforts because<lb />
we've seen that that's<lb />
the only way real<lb />
substantive, mean-<lb />
ingful change is going<lb />
to come about for<lb />
farm workers Preiss<lb />
said.<lb />

60s Revisited<lb />
Injustice Alive And Well In '83<lb />
Every so often, in the editorial<lb />
writing business, we get word of an<lb />
incidence of terrible social in-<lb />
justice, an issue of unparalleled<lb />
importance and consequence to<lb />
society, an issue that literally cries<lb />
out for action.<lb />
Unfortunately, nothing like that<lb />
happenned yesterday. Never-<lb />
theless, something like that did<lb />
happen last week in St. Petersburg,<lb />
Fla.<lb />
It was, indeed, reminiscent of<lb />
the infamous student protests of<lb />
the Sixties: students up in arms<lb />
over the middle-class American<lb />
establishment, decrying the in-<lb />
justice imposed on them by their<lb />
ignorant, unyielding elders, rally-<lb />
ing to exhibit their collective disap-<lb />
proval of the administration. And,<lb />
when it was over, it seemed their<lb />
efforts were all in vain. It seems<lb />
there is no end to injustice.<lb />
It all started, after it started the<lb />
day before, when 37 high school<lb />
students were suspended for par-<lb />
ticipating in a rally protesting<lb />
school regulations forbidding<lb />
wearing shorts to class.<lb />
The terrible incident began when<lb />
Jeff Strothers, 17, convinced<lb />
several of his fellow male<lb />
classmates to don miniskirts <lb />
under current sexually-<lb />
discriminatory legislation, male<lb />
students cannot wear shorts, but<lb />
female students are allowed to<lb />
wear miniskirts to protest the<lb />
rule. He was suspended Thursday<lb />
for plotting and organizing the<lb />
protest. Then, on Friday, more<lb />
than 300 students and three con-<lb />
cerned mothers protested in<lb />
front of the school. They carried<lb />
hard-hitting, anti-establishment,<lb />
subversive signs addressed to<lb />
school superintendent Leo "Roy"<lb />
Sullivan that proclaimed such<lb />
athiestic sayings as: "Come on<lb />
Lee, let us show our knees<lb />
But it was a change that was not<lb />
to be. Sullivan, together with half<lb />
of the St. Petersburg police force,<lb />
repelled the Godless shorts-clad<lb />
horde and sent them home.<lb />
Speculation has it that the<lb />
students were actually communist<lb />
infiltrators (working, of course, in<lb />
conjunction with the KGB) sent to<lb />
America as youngsters to disrupt<lb />
democracy and imperialist school<lb />
boards around the nation.<lb />
However, these allegations <lb />
which came as a surprise to most<lb />
of the students' parents have<lb />
not yet been verified.<lb />
Sullivan, who also once<lb />
suspended a young coed for having<lb />
large breasts, had no further com-<lb />
ment on the situation.<lb />
It was not a pretty sight.<lb />
N.Cs Farm Workers:<lb />
The Slaves Of The Age<lb />
By PAT O'NEILL<lb />
"Fighting for social justice, it seems<lb />
to me, is one of the profoundest ways in<lb />
which man can say yes to man's digni-<lb />
ty<lb />
Cesar Chavez, Founder<lb />
United Farm Workers<lb />
The tragic plight of the North<lb />
Carolina farm worker is not a new<lb />
phenomenon. According to a 1980 study<lb />
conducted by the N.C. Department of<lb />
Administration, our state ranks last<lb />
among the 20 leading agricultural states<lb />
in terms of wages and laws intended to<lb />
protect farmworkers. And according to<lb />
Joan Priess, who visited ECU last week,<lb />
"North Carolina has a terrible reputa-<lb />
tion<lb />
Priess has been active for 10 years as<lb />
volunteer chairperson of Triangle<lb />
Friends of the United Farm Workers, an<lb />
arm of the United Farm Workers, begun<lb />
in California by Chavez in 1962. During<lb />
her talk at Mendenhall, Priess detailed<lb />
the extent of exploitation and degrada-<lb />
tion N.C. farm workers have had to en-<lb />
dure. In short, North Carolina's farm<lb />
workers:<lb />
 are denied collective bargaining<lb />
rights,<lb />
 receive no worker compensation<lb />
coverage,<lb />
have no comprehensive health or<lb />
safety benefits,<lb />
do not have access to sanitation<lb />
facilities while working in the fields<lb />
(toilets, drinking water, handwashing<lb />
facilities),<lb />
are not protected from exposure to<lb />
hazardous pesticides, and<lb />
are paid less than the minimum<lb />
wage.<lb />
Priess also mentioned that North<lb />
Carolina has no child labor protection<lb />
and that camp housing is often over-<lb />
crowded, filthy, and for all practical<lb />
purposes, unhvable. She also claims that<lb />
crew leaders partake in "widespread and<lb />
flagrant abuse" of the state's ABC laws.<lb />
Perhaps the most horrifying point<lb />
brought out by Priess was the fact that<lb />
farm workers are often enslaved by crew<lb />
leaders and are denied all basic rights.<lb />
Essentially, Priess described a present-<lb />
day situation in North Carolina which is<lb />
highly reminiscent of the Crapes of<lb />
Wrath era. In other words, injustice,<lb />
slavery and other types of human ex-<lb />
ploitation are alive and well in the state.<lb />
Priess pointed out that farm work is<lb />
the third most hazardous industry in<lb />
America. The average life-expectancy<lb />
for a farm worker is only 49 years.<lb />
One would think facts like these<lb />
would outrage our political leaders, not<lb />
to mention the agriculture industry. But<lb />
unfortunately, this is not the case. In<lb />
fact, Priess said that the strongest<lb />
resistance to legislation protecting the<lb />
farm worker is coming from agricultural<lb />
growers lobbies and the Farm Bureau.<lb />
Despite the findings by several study<lb />
commissions detailing decades of abuse<lb />
toward farm workers, nothing gets<lb />
done.<lb />
According to Priess, good recommen-<lb />
dations are made, but none is ever acted<lb />
on. She said N.C. growers are currently<lb />
"up in arms" because the General<lb />
Assembly is considering action on an<lb />
anti-slavery statute. Growers consider<lb />
the statute an "insult to their reputa-<lb />
tions<lb />
I think the fact that N.C. needs such a<lb />
statute is an insult to our state's reputa-<lb />
tion. It's also an insult to N.C. citizens<lb />
that our state's No. 1 industry is involv-<lb />

justice.<lb />
"The time has come for<lb />
North Carolinians to stop<lb />

Priess has requested N.C. voters to<lb />
lobby support for better laws for our<lb />
farm workers. The anti-slavery measure<lb />
is a necessary first step. But what's really<lb />
necessary to end this injustice will re-<lb />
quire much more than legislation.<lb />
"Farm workers must organize for their<lb />
own self-determination<lb />
Priess said the only way that "real,<lb />
substantive, meaningful change" is go-<lb />
ing to come about for farm workers is<lb />
when they organize.<lb />
Triangle Friends supports the right of<lb />
farm workers to organize. We, the<lb />
public, should too. So, the next time you<lb />
put some tasty N.C. vegetables on your<lb />
dinner table, just take a moment to<lb />
think of the suffering and pain that may<lb />
have resulted in getting them there. The<lb />

One Last Piece Of bleep bleep For The Road<lb />
Some Food For Thought<lb />
I wish there were enough weeks in the<lb />
year to write about all the things that<lb />
have been on my mind lately. But<lb />
because this is the last issue for the spr-<lb />
ing semester and, of course, because<lb />
I've already surpassed my quota of<lb />
meaningless offenses for this year, I'll<lb />
have to limit myself to this one final col-<lb />
umn, this one final compendium, this<lb />
one final piece of well<lb />
You know, there are still a lot of<lb />
things in the world that need to be<lb />
thought about. Like, for instance, the<lb />
term "higher education in North<lb />
Carolina Isn't that a conflict in terms?<lb />
Sort of like "military intelligence<lb />
"campus security" or "The Best of<lb />
Barry Manilow?"<lb />
Signing autographs is another thing<lb />
that bugs me. I mean, isn't it just a little<lb />
strange that people actually ask Arnold<lb />
Palmer to sign a can of motor oil? We<lb />
seem to be getting carried away. Hell,<lb />
before you know it, they'll have Cathy<lb />
Rigby doing a Stayfree commercial say-<lb />
ing, "You know, hardly a week goes by<lb />
that someone doesn't stop and ask me to<lb />
sign a mini pad<lb />
But there are some good things to<lb />
think about, too. For instance, the ECU<lb />
football team got off to its best start in<lb />
years the other night in the Purple-Gold<lb />
game. They're now 1-1!<lb />
But behind every rainbow, there's a<lb />
gray lining, or perhaps more precisely, a<lb />
Ronco commercial. That brings to mind<lb />
another thing that bugs me. What kind<lb />
of moron tries to cut up a pine tree, or<lb />
worse yet, a brick, with a steak knife?<lb />
Or how about dropping a raw chicken<lb />
on a fake diamond ring to advertise, of<lb />
MIKE HUGHES<lb />
Stuff I Think About<lb />
all things, a non-stick pan. And why the<lb />
hell do people in New Jersey have to call<lb />
a separate number to order a Pocket<lb />
Fisherman or a Slim Whitman album?<lb />
These are all things 1 think about at<lb />
night.<lb />
And I sometimes wonder if people in<lb />
ancient Rome or Greece were just like<lb />
us. 1 wonder if they ever said anything<lb />
like, "Damn, it's the same thing every<lb />
year; here it is March, and I'm still<lb />
writing 453 B.C. on my checks<lb />
Another thing I think about from time<lb />
to time is when tuna fish sweat a lot, do<lb />
they smell like humans? And what came<lb />
first? The chicken? Or Frank Perdue?<lb />
And whatever happened to Absorbine<lb />
Senior, Playtex Minus or Ben-Hetero?<lb />
And if a skunk eats a lot of baked<lb />
beans and gets gas, does he have to ex-<lb />
cuse himself at the table? Or does<lb />
anyone notice at all?<lb />
I also sometimes wonder what proc-<lb />
tologists and urologists do to unwind<lb />
after a tough day at the orifice.<lb />
And sometimes I wonder if Ronald<lb />
Reagan still gets Jimmy Carter's junk<lb />
mail and Playboy subscription.<lb />
And what did cavemen do when they<lb />
ruined a new pair of shoes by stepping in<lb />
dinosaur dung? Did they try to scrape it<lb />
off on the neighbor's front rock? Did<lb />
they invent swearing? Hip waders?<lb />
You know what else has always puzzl-<lb />
ed me? (You'll notice I didn't ask if you<lb />
care.) What's always puzzled me is<lb />
well to be quite honest just about<lb />
everything.<lb />
Editor's Sote: Mike Hughes, a senior<lb />
from Elephant Butte, Montana, feels in-<lb />
credibly guilty today, because he has<lb />
been lying all year about himself. His<lb />
parents are not really Arab oil barons,<lb />
or even share croppers; nor is he a<lb />
transfer student from the Edna deck<lb />
School of Etiquette. No, actually, he is a<lb />
just a poor Haitian refugee who swam to<lb />
America in 1980 to live the American<lb />
Dream, to escape the tyranny of the rul-<lb />
ing junta, to seek political and religious<lb />
asylum and to meet girls. After spending<lb />
nearly three years in Greenville, he plans<lb />
to swim back this summer.<lb />

That's Not 'Really' How It Is<lb />
A couple of weeks ago, Mr. Stan<lb />
Landers published an article titled<lb />
"Repelling Doormat Religious<lb />
Types<lb />
1 feel the readers might appreciate<lb />
something about the true background,<lb />
preparation and life in general as per-<lb />
taining to the Mormon Missionaries.<lb />
The missionary program of the<lb />
Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday<lb />
Saints (Mormon) has been acclaimed<lb />
as one of the greatest spiritual<lb />
movements and undertakings this<lb />
world has ever known.<lb />
Let us progressively follow the<lb />
events in the lives of young Mormon<lb />
boys which lead to the fulfillment of<lb />
this spiritual experience:<lb />
This preparation includes diligent at-<lb />
tendance at the various church<lb />
meetings, beginning even with the<lb />
nursery, in which doctrines and prac-<lb />
tices of the Church are inculcated in<lb />
the lives of these tiny ones. Adherence<lb />
to moral standards of conduct with<lb />
respect to sexual purity, honesty and<lb />
other virtuous traits are stressed,<lb />
especially in the home.<lb />
The youth of the Church are taught<lb />
abstinence from the use of coffee, tea,<lb />
tobacco and alcoholic beveraes. Other<lb />
practices, such as the payment of<lb />
tithing, becomes habitual. They are en-<lb />
couraged to begin saving part of their<lb />
money, for it is understood that they<lb />
and their families must bear the entire<lb />
expense associated with the mission.<lb />
The Church itself does not in any way<lb />
share in these expenses.<lb />
When young men reach 19, and if<lb />
they are living in accordance with<lb />
Church standards, they receive a per-<lb />
sonal call from the Prophet of the<lb />
Church, inviting them to devote the<lb />
next 18 months of their lives to pro-<lb />
claiming the message of the gospel. It is<lb />
to be understood that this call is not<lb />
compulsory, and if refused, no<lb />
punitive measures are taken against the<lb />
young person. The individual's status,<lb />
churchwise, is unaffected.<lb />
Missionaries do not select the locale<lb />
to which they will be sent but go where<lb />
they're assigned. It may be one of the<lb />
states or a foreign country. There are<lb />
currently nearly 40,000 missionaries<lb />
(the majority of whom are men,<lb />
although some women and older<lb />
couples may also serve) throughout the<lb />
world.<lb />
Acceptance of the call involves in<lb />
most cases considerable sacrifice in-<lb />
terruption or postponement of college<lb />
matriculation, giving up a job or delay-<lb />
ing marriage, leaving home and loved<lb />
ones.<lb />
This discipline, which comes from<lb />
personal conviction, builds and lifts in<lb />
a marvelous manner. These young men<lb />
are motivated by great and powerful<lb />
convictions that what they're doing is<lb />
true. They discipline themselves, not<lb />
because of demands made upon them<lb />
by the Church, but because of the<lb />
knowledge within their hearts that<lb />
there is joy in service and satisfaction<lb />
in laboring in a great cause.<lb />
Prior to leaving for their mission, at-<lb />
tendance for a period of six weeks at<lb />
the Church Training Center is re-<lb />
quired. Instruction and counseling are<lb />
presented. For those assigned to<lb />
foreign countries, an intense instruc-<lb />
tional course in the language of that<lb />
country is offered.<lb />
Upon arrival at the designated field<lb />
of labor, the missionaries are assigned<lb />
to a "senior" companion one who<lb />
has been in the mission field for some<lb />
time. They always work "two by two<lb />
Further discipline is exhibited in that<lb />
regulations prohibit dating, curtail-<lb />
ment in attendance at movies, sporting<lb />
events or any activity which might<lb />
detract from the purpose for which<lb />
they are serving.<lb />
The familiar sight of two young men<lb />
dressed in white shirts with ties and<lb />
dark pants riding down the street on<lb />
bicycles depicts the "Elders" on their<lb />
way to fulfill an appointment with so-<lb />
meone who is being taught, or they<lb />
may be on their way trading (knocking<lb />
on doors). Some days are better than<lb />
others, as far as invitations to come in<lb />
and present their message is concerned.<lb />
Yet these young men invariably ex-<lb />
press their gratitude and thanksgiving<lb />
for having the privilege of laboring<lb />
with people whom they declare are the<lb />
most hospitable and friendly in the<lb />
world this, despite the fact that their<lb />
living conditions are usually not the<lb />
best, being far from their home en-<lb />
vironment. Adjustments must be made<lb />
in the diet. Such foods as collards, corn<lb />
bread, North Carolina barbecue,<lb />
Brunswick stew, grits and others are<lb />
unfamiliar items.<lb />
Language expressions often make<lb />
the missionaries feel that they are, in-<lb />
deed, in a foreign land. What, with<lb />
such expressions as "Y'all come<lb />
"Down yonder "Fixin' to go "I<lb />
reckon and "a fur piece<lb />
When their labor is completed, and<lb />
they return home to their loved ones, it<lb />
is the universal testimony of all that the<lb />
time spent in the mission field, bearing<lb />
witness to the gospel, has been the hap-<lb />
piest time of their lives.<lb />

ECU's Air Force ROTC program. Due<lb />
to two unrelated incidents involving<lb />

Many people were upset with O'Neill<lb />

do: he puts on his green baseball<lb />
cap and his windbreaker, picks<lb />
up his lunchbox uh, his brief-<lb />
case, and goes home to Mom and<lb />
Mayfield, that bland epitome of<lb />
suburban '50s Waspland.<lb />
I guess that's what I expected,<lb />
to be taken back. Either that or<lb />
some high-camp hilarity; there<lb />
was little of either. From<lb />
Beaver's return to the end of the<lb />
movie, only clips from the<lb />
original series brought back<lb />
Beaver and Wally when they were<lb />
still cute, June when she was still<lb />
unenlightened, and Ward when<lb />
he was still alive and dispensing<lb />
advice.<lb />
So why didn't it work? Bar-<lb />
bara Billingsley rinses coffee cups<lb />
as convincingly as she did in<lb />
1959, only now she has her<lb />
eyebrows waxed and talks about<lb />
buying a condominium. Ken Os-<lb />
mond remains the slippery, oily<lb />
bully, only now he's Haskell<lb />
Construction, a company that<lb />
gets by on slipshod work and<lb />
bribes. Richard Deacon returns<lb />
as Fred Rutherford to offer our<lb />
poor hero a job, so the Beaver<lb />
can bring his two sons back to<lb />
Mayfield "where there's good<lb />
stuff in the ice box<lb />
Even nostalgia, the show's ma-<lb />
jor selling point, seemed strained.<lb />
After all, you can catch the Beav<lb />
on cable reruns anytime. The<lb />
show failed by trying to recapture<lb />
its original charm and warmth in<lb />
a Meaningful and Relevant way.<lb />
It tried to introduce the Cleavers<lb />
to the 80s.<lb />
Leave It To Beaver may have<lb />
spouted its share of messages and<lb />
morals, but it did it when situa-<lb />
tion comedy like its audience<lb />
 was younger and less<lb />
sophisticated. When discipline<lb />
meant losing your allowance in-<lb />
stead of a trip to the child<lb />
psychologist.<lb />
Okay, so the Cleavers were<lb />
super-normal, even for the 50s.<lb />
Plunging these cherished<lb />
stereotypes head-first into the<lb />
scenarios of today's sitcoms <lb />
career anxieties, single paren-<lb />
thood, identity crises doomed<lb />
the return of the Cleavers and<lb />
any chance of audience accepting<lb />
them as much more than an<lb />
epilogue to an era of remembered<lb />
normalcy. Still the Beaver, aim-<lb />
ing at the leftover pocket desire<lb />
for the good ol' days when no<lb />
one was impotent or divorced,<lb />
played instead to audiences un-<lb />
willing to swallow the pairing of<lb />
modern problems with 50s<lb />
psyches.<lb />
But every few seasons, a pro-<lb />
ducer envisions grand ratings for<lb />
the revival of an old situation<lb />
comedy. Old shows and their<lb />
stars have an emotional<lb />
stronghold on TV-generaltion<lb />
memories. And there's a televi-<lb />
sion penchant for tidy endings<lb />
and for shows by formula.<lb />
They're cheaper.<lb />
But the success rate of sitcom<lb />
revivals is only slightly higher<lb />
than that of McLean Stevenson's<lb />
post-MASH series. The Many<lb />
Loves of Dobie Gillis, a hit from<lb />
1959 to 1963, survived only its<lb />
pilot eplisode in 1977, called<lb />
Whatever Happened to Dobie<lb />
Gillis? (He grew up, got married,<lb />
got boring.) Danny Thomas tried<lb />
to resuscitate his long-running<lb />
series in 1979 as Make Room for<lb />
Granddaddy, which died in one<lb />
season. And the casualties go on:<lb />
Ozzies Girls, The Brady Brides<lb />
and Rescue from Gilligan's<lb />
Island all failed.<lb />
Sometime satire turns in finer<lb />
' return of vehicles than the<lb />

Beaver 25th Anniversary Reu-<lb />

Beaver wasn't much ludicrous. I<lb />
didn't know whether to wince or<lb />
laugh at such lines as, "He wants<lb />
to petition for custody! Can you<lb />
believe that little goof?" Gee,<lb />
Dad.<lb />
Not many sitcoms get on the<lb />
air these days featuring the<lb />
warm-hearted families of the<lb />
Leave It To Beaver years without<lb />
a foot in the door of social com-<lb />
mentary despite identical<lb />
characterizations or story lines.<lb />
Different Strokes, for example,<lb />
teams adopted black siblings with<lb />
a wifeless white benefactor. A<lb />
totally different guy, the father<lb />
still delivers vintage Ward cleaver<lb />
homilies like, "a man never gets<lb />
so old he forgets how it was being<lb />
a little boy<lb />
In fact, that's all Jerry' Mathers<lb />

Jerry the Adult trying to play<lb />
Beaver the Adult shoots holes in<lb />
our memories of the kid and his<lb />
era. It seems we just don't want<lb />
our nostalgia jostled by grown-up<lb />
child stars.<lb />
Besides, you don't want to<lb />
shoot down someone's God, do<lb />
you? And for heaven's sake,<lb />
don't mess with 50s nostalgia<lb />
unless you're going to do it the<lb />
way Happv Days does by leav-<lb />

Say Amen, somebody. And<lb />
pass the Saltines and the root<lb />

better than their cover versions of<lb />
songs by groups such as The<lb />
Police, The Jam, The Producers<lb />
and The Romantics. Perhaps that<lb />
is because the band is trying hard,<lb />
and successfully at that, to con-<lb />
vey their own message, albeit<lb />
political, as can be seen in their<lb />
lyrics to their song "Totalitarian<lb />
Madness<lb />
So what if they're taking our<lb />
kidsSo what if they're telling<lb />
'em lies 'So what if they 're taking<lb />
our last breath So what if they<lb />

All their songs, original or<lb />
otherwise, were performed very<lb />
well with the exception of their<lb />
cover version of Tom Petty and<lb />
the Heartbreaker's current hit<lb />
"Change of Heart They played<lb />
that song so fast that Tom Petty<lb />
would probably not even have<lb />
recognized it.<lb />
Despite that one disappointing<lb />
moment, this band really knows<lb />
how to put out some fresh pro-<lb />
gressive sounds. To put it simply,<lb />
these guys are good: they don't<lb />
use sophisticated lighting<lb />
systems, strobe lights, or ex-<lb />
ploding smoke bombs, they only<lb />
rely on their musical ability and<lb />
give a very entertaining perfor-<lb />
mance.<lb />
What The Trend can boast of<lb />
about their music is its<lb />
cohesiveness. Bassist Danny<lb />
Dinerdo, guitarist Brett Richards<lb />
(who both write the music to the<lb />
group's original songs) and<lb />
drummer David Kebler give<lb />
strong support to the campable<lb />
voice of lead singer Mark Kemp<lb />
(who writes the lyrics for the<lb />
groups originals).<lb />
The Trend will be back at the<lb />
New Deli this Friday afternoon<lb />
(during "happy hour") at 3 p.m.<lb />
After struggling through exams,<lb />
those students who enjoy<lb />
original, progressive sounds in<lb />
the new wave (with some<lb />
sociopolitical insight mixed in)<lb />
would miss a great opportunity to<lb />
enjoy The Trend's performance.<lb />
Don't miss them.<lb />

Bulldogs Turn Back 'Stranded' Pirates<lb />
By KEN BOLTON<lb />
siulul Sports Editor<lb />
Right fielder Greg Baker went<lb />
four-for-four and scored four<lb />
runs Monday night as the Atlantic<lb />
Christian Bulldogs defeated ECU<lb />
8-4.<lb />
For the Pirates, it was a case of<lb />
wasted opportunities as ECU<lb />
stranded 12 men on base.<lb />
"We had a lot of opportunities,<lb />
but couldn't take advantage of<lb />
it said ECU head coach Hal<lb />
Baird.<lb />
The one bright spot for the<lb />
Pirates was Winfred Johnson's<lb />
fifth-inning homer his 11th of<lb />
the year. Johnson is now one off<lb />
the record of 12 homers in one<lb />
season set in 1981 by Butch Davis.<lb />
The Bulldogs jumped out to a<lb />
2-0 lead after the first inning on a<lb />
walk by Eric McDaniels and a<lb />
two-run blast by shortstop David<lb />
Lawhorn.<lb />
After ECU scored a run in the<lb />
bottom of the first on Todd<lb />
Evans' fielders-choice, ACC came<lb />
back with two runs in the second.<lb />
The Pirates' frustration con-<lb />
tinued in the second inning as Kel-<lb />
ly Robinette hit into a bases-<lb />
loaded double play.<lb />
In the fourth inning, ECU had<lb />
a golden opportunity but failed to<lb />
convert it into any runs.<lb />
Tony Salmond opened the inn-<lb />
ing with a single to left field. Jack<lb />
Curlings followed with a double<lb />
down the left-field line, but Sal-<lb />
mond was thrown out at the plate<lb />
trying to score.<lb />
With Curlings on third,<lb />
Robinette popped up in foul ter-<lb />
ritory and John Hallow grounded<lb />
out to first to end the inning.<lb />
The Pirates wasted another run-<lb />
scoring opportunity in the sixth<lb />
when Evans grounded out to the<lb />
shortstop with the bases full.<lb />
Although the Pirates out-hit the<lb />
Bulldogs 11-9, it was a matter of<lb />
some defensive mistakes at key<lb />
times and a lack of batting at op-<lb />
portune times.<lb />
"We had breakdowns in every<lb />
area Baird said. "But we're<lb />
playing as hard as we possibly<lb />
can<lb />
The Pirates have four games re-<lb />
maining on the 1983 schedule, and<lb />
it is going to close as to whether<lb />
ECU will make any post-season<lb />
tournaments.<lb />
Only four teams will be invited<lb />
to the ECAC tournament in May,<lb />
and ECU is currently battling with<lb />
Georgetown for the fourth spot.<lb />
James Madison, Richmond and<lb />
William and Mary have all but<lb />
wrapped up the first three spots.<lb />
On Friday night, ECU will host<lb />
Baptist in a 7:00 p.m. game, and<lb />
the two teams will play again<lb />
Saturday at 1:00 p.m.<lb />
On Sunday, the Pirates will<lb />
travel to Wilson to wind up their<lb />
season with a doubleheader with<lb />
Atlantic Christian.<lb />

Head Coach Cathy Andruzzi with<lb />
a laugh, "but 'The Denk' really<lb />

Senior Caren Truske was<lb />
selected as the most improved<lb />

years ago from N.C. State. "Her<lb />
improvement from the first time<lb />
she came to us was unbelievable, <lb />
Andruzzi said. "She hung in there<lb />

or the best defensive player trophy<lb />
went to senior Fran Hooks. "The<lb />

druzzi said. "I remember one time<lb />
when Fran got her head stuck<lb />
under the scoring table diving for<lb />
the ball. She's played 6-2's and<lb />
5-11's (players) all year<lb />
Both Hooks and Denkler<lb />
received the "I Have Survived"<lb />
award. "We give this to those<lb />
who serve four years active duty<lb />
Andruzzi said, "and I mean that.<lb />
Going through our program is not<lb />
easy, and we expect a great deal<lb />
out of our athletes<lb />
After giving each senior pla-<lb />

Denkler and Truske for showing<lb />
excellence not only on the court<lb />
but in the classroom as well. All<lb />
three players will graduate with at<lb />
least a 3.0 gradepoint average.<lb />

touchdowns and John Williams<lb />
completed all six of his passes as<lb />
the Gold defeated the Purple<lb />
21-12 in ECU's annual spring<lb />
scrimmage game Saturday night.<lb />
In addition to his 83 yards<lb />
through the air, Williams also<lb />
rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries<lb />
in a game played under wet and<lb />
windy conditions.<lb />
Head coach Ed Emory, in his<lb />
fourth year at the ECU helm,<lb />
viewed the game from the press<lb />
box and was happy with what he<lb />
saw.<lb />
"I was pleased all around with<lb />
the game Emory stated. "We<lb />
saw some very positive things and<lb />
it was by far the best spring game<lb />
we've had since I've been here<lb />
The Gold squad jumped out to<lb />
an early 14-0 lead on Byner's two<lb />
first-quarter touchdowns.<lb />
After Jeff Heath who was<lb />
the place kicker for both teams <lb />
started the game off by booting<lb />
the kickoff out of the end zone,<lb />
the Gold took over on their own<lb />
20-yard line.<lb />
With Williams and Byner doing<lb />
most of the damage, the Gold<lb />
marched all the way down to the<lb />
Purple 27-yard line.<lb />
Facing a third down and eight.<lb />
Gold tailback Bubba Bunn took<lb />
an option pitch from Williams<lb />
and raced around the left end for<lb />
a ten-yard gain.<lb />
On the next play, Bunn ran off-<lb />
tackle for a 12-yard pick up, put-<lb />
ting the Gold on the five-yard line<lb />
with a first-and-goal situation.<lb />
Byner then took the handoff up<lb />
the middle, breaking several<lb />
tackles on the way to the end zone<lb />
with the game's first score.<lb />
Before the Purple had even<lb />
touched the ball, the Gold team<lb />
had run off the first six and one-<lb />
half minutes of the clock and had<lb />
kept the ball on the ground for 13<lb />
of the 14 plays in the drive.<lb />
The Purple, with Kevin Ingram<lb />
at quarterback and Tony Baker<lb />
and Reggie Branch at running<lb />
backs, took their initial kickoff<lb />
and advanced to the Gold 33-yard<lb />
line.<lb />
But a fumble by Baker and<lb />
subsequent recovery by Kenny<lb />
Phillips gave the Gold the ball on<lb />
their own 31.<lb />
The Gold needed only six plays<lb />
to cover the 69 yards as Williams<lb />
completed passes to Stefon<lb />
Adams for 17 yards and Norwood<lb />
Vann for 20 yards.<lb />
Byner took it over the goal line<lb />
from the nine with another burst<lb />
up the middle behind a line head-<lb />
ed by 300-pound senior Terry<lb />
Long.<lb />
The score at the end of the first<lb />
quarter was 14-0, and the half<lb />
ended with the same totals as the<lb />
increasing rain made play dif-<lb />
ficult.<lb />
The second half started with the<lb />
Purple's Chris McLawhorn retur-<lb />
ning the kickoff 57 yards before<lb />
being hauled down by the last<lb />
defender.<lb />
After three straight runs by-<lb />
Branch netted 29 yards, the drive<lb />
stalled and a fourth-and-four at-<lb />
tempt was thwarted by the Gold<lb />
defense.<lb />
The Gold took over on their<lb />
own 17 and Williams directed his<lb />
team to the Gold 43, where Byner<lb />
again headed up the middle, this<lb />
time for a 32-yard gain.<lb />
Freshman fullback Pat Bowens<lb />
took the handoff on the very next<lb />
play and busted through the line<lb />
and scored on a 25-yard scamper.<lb />
The Purple was again unable to<lb />
score in the third period, and the<lb />
score was 21-0 going into the final<lb />
frame.<lb />
A pass interference call netted<lb />
the Purple 43 yards on their first<lb />
drive of the fourth period, and In-<lb />
gram snuck in from the one-yard<lb />
line three plays later. The two-<lb />
point conversion failed and the<lb />

baseball victory.<lb />
The Pirates hit four home runs<lb />
in the contest, which was delayed<lb />
for more than an hour due to the<lb />
rain. Johnson knocked out two,<lb />
while Jabo Fulghum and Todd<lb />
Evans each had one.<lb />
Johnson, who pitched the first<lb />
5 13 innings of the game, also<lb />

Robby McClanahan was the<lb />
winning pitcher, going the final 4<lb />
23 innings. He struck out six,<lb />
and gave up just two hits as he<lb />
posted his second victory against<lb />
three losses.<lb />
After trading runs in the third<lb />
inning, John Hallow singled to<lb />
right in the bottom of the fourth.<lb />
Evans then followed, knocking<lb />
the ball over the right field fence<lb />
for a 3-1 edge. Johnson was next,<lb />
and he made it 4-1 with one of his<lb />
two homers.<lb />
Campbell scored five big runs<lb />
in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4<lb />
lead. After an ECU error, a bunt<lb />
and a single that loaded the bases,<lb />
Mickey Spicer knocked out a<lb />
ground-slam to push the Camels<lb />
into the lead.<lb />
In the seventh, Campbell added<lb />
another run when Rodney Stovall<lb />
sacrificed to give the Camels a 7-4<lb />
advantage.<lb />
ECU pulled back within one<lb />
with a pair of runs in the sixth,<lb />
and then finally tied it with a run<lb />

Robinette doubled to right center,<lb />
moved to third on a fielder's<lb />

the album with an op-<lb />

Here Van says<lb />
"Higher in my mind,<lb />
I'm gonna leave these<lb />

"Irish Heartbeat<lb />

My favorite cut on<lb />
the record is "Rave<lb />
On John Donne<lb />
Here Van calls on<lb />

language to sing<lb />

Rave on, Van, rave<lb />

I first heard about<lb />
U2 from a couple of<lb />
Irish girls who were<lb />
working for a<lb />
mayoral campaign in<lb />
New Orleans to make<lb />
enough money to get<lb />
down to Mexico.<lb />
They liked Van Mor-<lb />
rison and they liked<lb />
traditional music, but<lb />
they were in love with<lb />
U2. After hearing<lb />
U2's third release<lb />
War (Island Records),<lb />
I can see why.<lb />
From the LP's title<lb />
to the lyrics to the<lb />
music, the theme of<lb />
the importance of be-<lb />
ing close to someone<lb />
in two comes through<lb />
again and again. This<lb />
theme rings<lb />
throughout "New<lb />
Year's Day perhaps<lb />
the best and most im-<lb />
portant song or this<lb />
record. Here U2 say,<lb />
"Though torn in two<lb />
we can be one. I will<lb />
begin again<lb />
Another great song<lb />
on this album is<lb />
"Sunday, Bloody<lb />
Sunday which may<lb />
have been written<lb />
about Bloody Sun-<lb />
day, a 1972 incident<lb />
when British<lb />
paratroopers killed 13<lb />
civil rights<lb />
demonstrators in<lb />
Londonderry. Steve<lb />
Wickham adds a<lb />
violin solo that lends<lb />
an eerie touch which<lb />
causes the song to<lb />
stay with the listener.<lb />
The pain of living<lb />
in a country which is<lb />
torn by conflict comes<lb />
through again in<lb />
"Like A Song and<lb />
in "Drowning Men<lb />
In "Like A Song<lb />
U2 says, Angry words<lb />
won't stop the<lb />
fight Two wrongs<lb />
won't make it right.<lb />
One of the best<lb />
lyrics on the record is<lb />
on side 2 in a song<lb />
called "Surrender<lb />
It's in the street get-<lb />
ting under my<lb />
feetIt's in the air; it's<lb />
everywhere I look for<lb />
youIt's in the things<lb />
I do and say If I want<lb />
to live, I've got to die<lb />
to myself someday.<lb />
There isn't a bad<lb />
cut on this record. I<lb />
feel that special credit<lb />
for success goes to<lb />
Steve Lillywhite who<lb />
has done a superb job<lb />
of production on<lb />
these songs.<lb />
Kevin Rowland and<lb />
Dexy's Midnight<lb />
Runners make a<lb />
valiant attempt on<lb />
T o o - R y e - A y<lb />
(Polygram), but they<lb />
can't quite seem to<lb />
pull it all together.<lb />
Rowland attempts to<lb />
fuse a Motown soul<lb />
sound with traditional<lb />
Irish music. This<lb />
blend words on a cou-<lb />
ple of songs, notably<lb />
"Come On Eileen"<lb />
and "The Celtic Soul<lb />
Brothers but it just<lb />
doesn't carry most of<lb />
the songs.<lb />
Kevin Rowland has<lb />
potential, but it might<lb />
take a good producer<lb />
and several tighter<lb />
songs before they will<lb />
be able to met the<lb />
caliber of U2 and Van<lb />
Morrison.<lb />

THE ADVANTAGES OF<lb />
WORKING FOR YOUR<lb />
UNCLE.<lb />
The Army is looking for 1983 graduates in<lb />
Engineering and Science disciplines to serve as<lb />
commissioned officers. For those who qualify, this<lb />
program could be an important step toward a<lb />
rewarding career - in or out of the Army.<lb />
You've worked long and hard to earn your<lb />
Bachelor of Science degree. A commission in the<lb />
Army is a good way to use your technical exper-<lb />
tise while gaining valuable supervisory<lb />
experience. And the opportunity is available now!<lb />
An Army placement officer will be on cam-<lb />
dus soon to discuss opportunities and qualifica-<lb />
tions with those about to receive degrees in<lb />
Engineering or Science. Contact your department<lb />
placement office to arrange an appointment. Or<lb />

T<lb />
Gold Prevails<lb />
Cont'd From Page 6<lb />
9:55 remaining in the<lb />
game.<lb />
Another pass in-<lb />
terference penalty,<lb />
this one for 21 yards,<lb />
was called against the<lb />
Gold. That enabled<lb />
Ingram and tight end<lb />
Howard Berger to<lb />
team up on a 32-yard<lb />
TD bomb.<lb />
The conversion try<lb />
failed again and the<lb />
game ended with the<lb />
Gold winning by the<lb />
final nine-point<lb />
margin.<lb />
The final statistics<lb />
pointed to the Gold's<lb />
dominance on the<lb />
ground, as the win-<lb />
ners out-rushed the<lb />
Purple 292 to 189<lb />
yards. Branch was the<lb />
game's leading rusher<lb />
with 83 yards; Byner<lb />
led the Gold with 78<lb />
yards on nine carries.<lb />
The play of<lb />
Williams, a junior<lb />
college transfer who<lb />
also played on the<lb />
Pirate basketball<lb />
team, was a gratifying<lb />
sight to Emory.<lb />
"I was very pleased<lb />
with John Williams'<lb />
play Emory said in<lb />
the dry confines of the<lb />
press box. "It makes<lb />
me feel good about<lb />
the way the quarter-<lb />
backs are playing go-<lb />
ing into the fall<lb />
Emory said that<lb />
this year's ECU team<lb />
will throw the ball<lb />
more than in the past,<lb />
with two-thirds of<lb />
spring practice having<lb />
been spent on the<lb />
passing game.<lb />
Saturday night's<lb />
game marked the end<lb />
of practice until mid-<lb />
August, when the<lb />
Pirates will begin<lb />
preparing for the<lb />
September 3 season<lb />
opener against<lb />
Florida State.<lb />
"We had the best<lb />
talent that we've ever<lb />
had for this game<lb />
Emory commented.<lb />
"The spring has been<lb />
very positive; it's the<lb />
best we've had since<lb />
I've been here<lb />
In addition to the<lb />
new faces in uniform<lb />
 there are 32<lb />
freshmen and five<lb />
junior college<lb />
transfers there will<lb />
be a lot of new faces<lb />
on the sideline this<lb />
year.<lb />
Nine coaching<lb />
changes have been<lb />
made to Emory's<lb />
staff, including the<lb />
additon of new offen-<lb />
sive and defensive<lb />
coordinators.<lb />
Art Baker, former-<lb />
