ECU May Get Student-Run Research Group<lb />
By DARRYL BROWN<lb />
tviiMini Nn t fin<lb />
ECU may become the first<lb />
public university in North<lb />
Carolina to host a Public Interest<lb />
Research Group a student-run,<lb />
student-funded organization that<lb />
works on public policy issues of<lb />
interest to students and the com-<lb />
munity.<lb />
PIRGs are concerned with a<lb />
wide range of issues including<lb />
consumer protection, en-<lb />
vironmental preservation,<lb />
political reform, energy policy<lb />
and social justice. They have been<lb />
responsible for the passage of<lb />
laws in many states and often<lb />
publish surveys and reports on<lb />
regional, state and national issues.<lb />
PIRGs, started by consumer<lb />
advocate Ralph Nader in 1970,<lb />
are non-partisan groups currently<lb />
active in 25 states, Canada and<lb />
Australia. Nader, who lectured at<lb />
ECU last month, found enough<lb />
interest and support among the<lb />
administration and students for a<lb />
PIRG on campus to send a<lb />
representative from his<lb />
Washington office to ECU to help<lb />
start a local branch of the<lb />
organization.<lb />
Jason Adkins, who works for<lb />
Nader in Washington, will be at<lb />
ECU through Tuesday<lb />
distributing pamphlets, showing<lb />
films and answering questions in a<lb />
effort to inform students about<lb />
PIRGs. Ruffin Slater, from the<lb />
PIRG at Duke University in<lb />
Durham, will also be available to<lb />
talk on activities in North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
A film followed by a lecture-<lb />
discussion, which will explain the<lb />
objectives of Public Interest<lb />
Research Groups and how<lb />
students can start a local chapter<lb />
and become involved, will be<lb />
shown today at 4 p.m. in<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center room<lb />
221.<lb />
PIRGs are controlled by a stu-<lb />
dent board of directors who<lb />
oversee all of the organization's<lb />
activities and who hire a profes-<lb />
sional staff to run the organiza-<lb />
tion and maintain programs when<lb />
students are on vacation or leave<lb />
school.<lb />
PIRGs are funded through stu-<lb />
dent activity fees. The student<lb />
body of a university must pass a<lb />
referendum adding three to six<lb />
dollars to annual student fees to<lb />
finance the organization.<lb />
Student class projects and<lb />
school research activities are often<lb />
tied into PIRG programs. North<lb />
Carolina schools that presently<lb />
have PIRGs include Duke Univer-<lb />
sity, Elon, Guilford and Davidson<lb />
colleges.<lb />
A table will be set up in front of<lb />
the Student Supply Store with<lb />
more information on PIRGs and<lb />
signs will announce additional lec-<lb />
tures and films throughout the<lb />
weekend.<lb />

Slay Residence Hall is the win-<lb />

Association Energy Contest. Dur-<lb />
ing a 10-week period, Slay<lb />
residents worked together to save<lb />
a cumulative average of 19.19 per-<lb />
cent in their expected energy<lb />
usage. They saved a total of<lb />
11,021 kilowatts, which amounted<lb />
to a $531.19 energy cost reduc-<lb />
tion.<lb />
Clement Residence Hall, with a<lb />
average of 17.08 percent, was se-<lb />

Heckling College Speakers Denounced<lb />
(CPS) Worried that students<lb />
are using "the hecklers' veto" to<lb />
suppress free speech on campuses,<lb />
five college associates have issued<lb />
a joint denunciation of student<lb />
behavior that recently stopped<lb />
United Nations Ambassador<lb />
Jeane Kirkpatrick and Saudi Ara-<lb />
bian Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmed<lb />
Zaki Yamani from completing<lb />
campus lectures.<lb />
In their statement, the five<lb />
groups also noted the rude<lb />
behavior that former Black Pan-<lb />
ther Eldridge Cleaver has met on<lb />
campus travels over the last year<lb />
for the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's<lb />
Collegiate Association for the<lb />
Research of Principles.<lb />
"The 'hiss and boo when they<lb />
go beyond brief expressions of op-<lb />
position and become instruments<lb />
to silence those with whom one<lb />
disagrees, are inappropriate the<lb />
statement read.<lb />
The statement, signed by the<lb />
American Council on Education,<lb />
the National Coalition of In-<lb />
dependent Colleges and Universi-<lb />
ty Students (known as COPJS,<lb />
the U.S. Student Association, the<lb />
National Organization of Black<lb />
University and College Students<lb />
and the American Association of<lb />
University Professors (AAUP),<lb />
called on schools and students to<lb />
take steps to assure speakers get to<lb />
speak.<lb />
"It is a very dangerous situa-<lb />
tion says Dr. Alfred Sumberg<lb />
of the AAUP, when freedom of<lb />
speech is denied for any reason.<lb />
"We will always have dif-<lb />
ferences of opinions and ideas on<lb />
campuses, and 1 think that's<lb />
great says Sara Thurin,<lb />
COPUS's president. "But the<lb />
goal of the statement is to make it<lb />
clear we don't support a hecklers'<lb />
veto<lb />
There were a rash of such<lb />
'vetoes" in March as<lb />
Kirkpatrick, Yamani and Cleaver<lb />
were all foiled in attempts to<lb />
deliver speeches.<lb />
Kirkpatrick made it through a<lb />
troubled March 2 talk at the<lb />
University of Minnesota, but later<lb />
in the month was prevented from<lb />
speaking by some 800 Berkeley<lb />
demonstrators against the Reagan<lb />
administration's policies in El<lb />
Salvador.<lb />
Yamani never got to deliver a<lb />
March 28 speech at Kansas State<lb />
because of heckling from the rear<lb />
of the auditorium he was speaking<lb />
in. Police eventually arrested five<lb />
people after KSU President<lb />
Duana Acker failed to persuade<lb />
the hecklers to quiet down.<lb />
Wisconsin students on March<lb />
18 forced Cleaver to stop a speech<lb />
on that campus for the second<lb />
time this school year.<lb />
Cleaver has long been victimiz-<lb />
ed by campus hecklers. In<lb />
February, 1982, Yale students<lb />
booed him off their stage. Last<lb />
May one Berkeley student threw a<lb />
punch at him while hecklers<lb />
repeatedly interrupted the former<lb />
radical as he attempted to deliver<lb />
his address.<lb />
"It has always happened says<lb />
American Council on Education<lb />
spokesman Bob Aaron. "We said<lb />
the same thing (about letting peo-<lb />
ple speak) at the time of the Viet-<lb />
nam war<lb />
"I don't think it's rampant<lb />
now Thurin says. "But it is<lb />
something that could grow<lb />
Some don't see much there to<lb />
grow. "I haven't found (heckling)<lb />
to be a problem says Carol<lb />
Bruckner of the William Morris<lb />
Agency in New York, which<lb />
books many campus lecture tours.<lb />
Slay received $250 in prize<lb />
money for their victory. Second<lb />
place won $200 and third received<lb />
$150.<lb />
According to SRA energy con-<lb />
test chairman Mark Niewald, five<lb />
other residence halls received a<lb />
$100 bonus for saving a total of<lb />
five percent or more during the<lb />
contest. Tyler, Fletcher, Garret,<lb />
Umstead and White residence<lb />
halls rounded out the top eight<lb />
finishers. All saved five percent or<lb />
more.<lb />
Niewald said he was very proud<lb />
of all the residence hall students<lb />
for the tremendous efforts. "We<lb />
saved $6,247.73 of residents'<lb />
money Niewald said. He added<lb />
that this money could be used for<lb />
"improvements" in the residence<lb />
halls.<lb />
Denise Gibson, energy officer<lb />
for Slay, received the SRA's<lb />
outstanding energy officer award<lb />
for her efforts at publicizing and<lb />
directing the Slay effort. "I think<lb />
it's great Gibson said.<lb />
"Everybody pitched in and<lb />
helped, and we did it<lb />
Slay is a co-ed residence hall.<lb />
Niewald also lives at Slay and<lb />
helped Gibson promote the con-<lb />
test.<lb />
Gibson said she posted signs to<lb />
remind Slay residents to save<lb />
energy. "I put up signs<lb />
everywhere she said.<lb />
Gibson also said she gave<lb />
residents energy-saving tips such<lb />
as encouraging them to watch<lb />
television in groups and to shut<lb />
off unnecessary lights. She kept<lb />
hall residents informed on a week-<lb />
ly basis of Slay's standing in the<lb />
contest.<lb />
During the Easter weekend.<lb />
Slay residents held a "black-out<lb />
party" at which everyone shut off<lb />
all lights and unplugged electrical<lb />
appliances. Residents who left for<lb />
the weekend were asked in ad-<lb />
vance to disconnect unneeded ap-<lb />
pliances.<lb />
The party was held in the lobbv<lb />
of thehaJU. "Weturned out ait the<lb />
lights, ate popcorn and watched<lb />
TV Gibson said.<lb />
Niewald Elected SRA<lb />
President In Run-Off<lb />
Blake, Shondell To Debate El Salvador<lb />
Two Greenville school teachers<lb />
have arranged for a debate on El<lb />
Salvador and the impact of U.S.<lb />
policy there between Assistant to<lb />
the Chancellor Charles R. Blake<lb />
and ECU Catholic campus<lb />
minister Sister Helen Shondell.<lb />
Blake is veteran of both the<lb />
Korean and Vietnam wars and a<lb />
former policy advisor to the<lb />
Secretary of the Air Force.<lb />
Shondell, a Catholic nun, has<lb />
been an outspoken critic of U.S.<lb />
policy in Latin America.<lb />
Frank O'Neal and Ron<lb />
Hochmuth, history teachers at<lb />
C.B. Aycock Junior High School,<lb />
both invited Blake and Shondell<lb />
to conduct the debate before four<lb />
8th and 9th grade classes Friday.<lb />
"I feel like it's the school's<lb />
responsibility to present a balanc-<lb />
ed prospective and let the student<lb />
make the choice O'Neal said.<lb />
"We wanted the students to sec<lb />
that the United States is a prisoner<lb />
of its past O'Neal said, "We<lb />
still have a lot of history to over-<lb />
come O'Neal added in a<lb />
reference to what he termed<lb />
"questionable" decisions in past<lb />
U.S. Foreign policy.<lb />
"I'm trying to present both<lb />
sides O'Neal said adding that he<lb />
saw his role in the debate as a<lb />
"devil's advocate<lb />
Blake, who has spoke on<lb />
foreign affairs before at Aycock,<lb />
had offered to debate either side<lb />
of the issue. He added that he<lb />
wasn't planning to be a hawk, but<lb />
instead would present a more<lb />
moderate opinion that premised<lb />
on the preservation of the Monroe<lb />
Doctrine. "There are merits on<lb />
both sides of the issue Blake<lb />
said. He added that his hope was<lb />
that students, after hearing the<lb />
presentation, would have "greater<lb />
insights into the complexities of<lb />
international relations<lb />
Blake's daughter attends school<lb />
at Aycock.<lb />
Shondell, who is the local con-<lb />
tact for the Carolina Interfaith<lb />
Task Force on Central America,<lb />
an inter-denominational religious<lb />
organization opposed to some<lb />
U.S. policies in Central America,<lb />
said she hopes the debate will en-<lb />
courage students to become better<lb />
informed on critical issues.<lb />
"I hope they (students) will be<lb />
able to more critically evaluate<lb />
what our government is doing in<lb />
Central America Shondell said.<lb />
She claims that U.S. military aid<lb />
to El Salvador is being used for<lb />
the wrong purposes. Blake in-<lb />
dicated that he disagreed with<lb />
some things going on in El<lb />
Salvador, but he saw no correla-<lb />
tion between U.S. policy there<lb />
and Soviet policy in Poland or<lb />
Afghanistan.<lb />
"We really don't move in with<lb />
tanks and a strong arm (like the<lb />
Soviets)" Blake added.<lb />
Mark Niewald won the run-off<lb />
election for Student Residence<lb />
Association president Tuesday,<lb />
defeating Danny White by a vote<lb />
of 384 to 310. The run-off was<lb />
called by Niewald after last week's<lb />
regular SRA elections for ex-<lb />
ecutive officers, in which White<lb />
outdistanced Niewald 331 to 329.<lb />
According to SRA rules, a run-<lb />
off can be demanded if the margin<lb />
of victory is less than two percent.<lb />
Both candidates won their own<lb />
residence halls by a large margin.<lb />
White taking Umstead and<lb />
Niewald winning in Slay. Elec-<lb />
tions committee chairman Ed<lb />
Dougherty said heavy campaign-<lb />
ing in the hard-fought race still<lb />
yielded a poor student turn-out at<lb />
the polls, with only about 700 out<lb />
of 5000 resident students casting<lb />
ballots.<lb />
Niewald was sworn into office<lb />
Wednesday night along with other<lb />
new SRA officers at the organiza-<lb />
tion's annual banquet at the Holi-<lb />
day Inn.<lb />
"We're going to try to be an ex-<lb />
it<lb />
Mark Niewald<lb />
 elected StLA President<lb />
pansionist administration<lb />
Niewald said. He said he wants to<lb />
improve communication between<lb />
dorms and make students aware<lb />
of the purpose of the SRA, and<lb />
what it can do for them and the<lb />
community. He said he wants<lb />
students to feel he and the SRA<lb />
are always available.<lb />
'Men Of ECU' Unpopular, Unsold<lb />
The men of ECU are still lying<lb />
in boxes waiting to be bought <lb />
that is the "Men of ECU" calen-<lb />
dars. Because of production pro-<lb />
blems that delayed the arrival of<lb />
the 14-month calendar, only 500<lb />
of a total order of 5,500 have been<lb />
sold.<lb />
ECU Buccaneer Editor Lisa<lb />
Coleman, who coordinated the<lb />
production of the calendar, said<lb />
former ECU art student Mitch<lb />
Perkins took more time than ex-<lb />
pected to Finish the calendar.<lb />
Perkins was hired last fall by<lb />
the Buccaneer to photograph the<lb />
models and layout the calendar.<lb />
He was paid $50 per-month over a<lb />
four-month period to complete<lb />
the job. "Perkins had, to take<lb />
more time to get the quality he<lb />
wanted Coleman said. "If it<lb />
(the calendar) had just been<lb />
thrown together, it wouldn't have<lb />
sold.<lb />
Because of the delay, the Men<lb />
of ECU calendars weren't<lb />
delivered until the end of January<lb />
 a difficult time to sell calen-<lb />
dars.<lb />
Coleman also said that she<lb />
didn't have enough funds in her<lb />
budget to advertise the calendar to<lb />
maximize sales. "We advertised<lb />
the calendar three or four times in<lb />
The East Carolinian Coleman<lb />
said. "I don't have the money in<lb />
my budget to put another ad in<lb />
The East Carolinian<lb />
Coleman plans to sell the calen-<lb />
dars at booths set up in the lobbies<lb />
of women's residence halls before<lb />
exams begin. She also plans to sell<lb />
them during next Thursday's<lb />
Barefoot on the Mall program.<lb />
The Buccaneer held a contest in<lb />
November to choose the 17 men<lb />
whose pictures appear on the<lb />
calendar. "We had 80 to 90 guys,<lb />
and in two nights of judging, we<lb />
narrowed the field to 17 Col-<lb />
eman said. She added that the ap-<lb />
plicants were chosen by a female<lb />
panel.<lb />
Coleman claims that the calen-<lb />
dar baa received praise from the<lb />
art community for its high quali-<lb />
ty. Perkins has told Coleman that<lb />

Dr. David Sanders, a<lb />
professor in the<lb />
English department<lb />
and chairman of the<lb />

said students will be<lb />
able to talk with the<lb />
chairmen of depart-<lb />

hope to major or<lb />

numerous lectures<lb />
and discussions on<lb />
topics such as finan-<lb />

by ECU faculty, staff<lb />
and students.<lb />
Several meals, in-<lb />
cluding a large ban-<lb />

which Chancellor<lb />

speak, are planned for<lb />
the high school<lb />
students, and recrea-<lb />

as a Sunday night<lb />
social and a college<lb />
bowl competition, are<lb />
planned for the<lb />
students. Tickets to<lb />
the ECU production<lb />
of Our Town and a<lb />
concert by the School<lb />
of Music will be<lb />
available to the<lb />
guests, and some<lb />
tickets will be given<lb />
out as prizes at<lb />
weekend events.<lb />
Sanders said<lb />
students invited to the<lb />
Scholars Weekend are<lb />
from all regions of<lb />
North Carolina and<lb />
are interested in a<lb />
variety of majors and<lb />
careers, including<lb />
science, English, art<lb />
and music. "We write<lb />

About 25 ECU<lb />

a half dozen honors<lb />
students, as well as<lb />
the ECU am-<lb />

and hosting the<lb />

Sanders said,<lb />
however, that all ECU<lb />

the guests a good im-<lb />

A New Issue<lb />
Avoiding Trouble Through Ambiguity<lb />
Since we're all pretty much sick<lb />
and tired of reading and writing<lb />
about death, destruction and the<lb />
SGA week after week, and since<lb />
"nobody ever reads editorials<lb />
anyway (a fact well-documented<lb />
by a recent East Carolinian poll)<lb />
this short editorial will set out to<lb />
accomplish nothing except<lb />
maybe filling up what would other-<lb />
wise be a ridiculous looking white<lb />
space<lb />
With this is mind, an editorial<lb />
becomes infinitely more easy to<lb />
read, and especially to write. After<lb />
all, how can one fail if one at-<lb />
tempts nothing? One can't. Two<lb />
may be able to, but one certainly<lb />
can't.<lb />
It would, perhaps, be easy<lb />
enough to comment on at least one<lb />
of the issues in our troubled world<lb />
or on our troubled campus. There<lb />
are certainly plenty of other things<lb />
to write about, but who wants to<lb />
read about something of impor-<lb />
tance when he or she can read<lb />
something totally ambiguous and<lb />
unimportant like this? (A show of<lb />
hands is not necessary.)<lb />
And if you think about it, there<lb />
are only about thiee issues that<lb />
most students care about anyway:<lb />
sex, drugs and money. But it just<lb />
so happened that there isn't<lb />
anything much going on these days<lb />
in the sex, drugs or money worlds<lb />
(other than the fact that sex and<lb />
drugs are costing more than ever).<lb />
Hence, this purposeless essay.<lb />
If this were an editorial with a<lb />
goal, if it were supposed to help<lb />
sway opinion one way or another,<lb />
it probably wouldn't work<lb />
anyway, right? Right.<lb />
Furthermore, The East Caroli-<lb />
nian has been blindly accused in<lb />
the past of imposing its radical<lb />
biases liberal one issue, conser-<lb />
vative the next on the student<lb />
community twice a week. So, we<lb />
felt it best to write something<lb />
middle-of-the-road "for a<lb />
change Like our mothers always<lb />
told us, "If you don't have<lb />
anything nice to say, don't say<lb />
anything at all<lb />
Then again, Mom never had to<lb />
deal with the SGA. Not that<lb />
there's anything wrong with the<lb />
SGA. Heavens no! It just seemed<lb />
like a good thing to say in a mean-<lb />
ingless editorial, which, incidental-<lb />
ly, is what this is.<lb />
No, we certainly don't want to<lb />
get anyone angry with us, especial-<lb />
ly the SGA or the administra-<lb />
tion. Not that they get angry easily<lb />
and act on ridiculous impulses. Of<lb />
course not. It's just that we'd just<lb />
hate to offend someone in an<lb />
editorial.<lb />
So, as far as we're concerned, at<lb />
least for today, life's just keen at<lb />
ECU. We've got no gripes, no<lb />
complaints, no suggestions. Sure,<lb />
we could gripe, complain or sug-<lb />
gest a few things here and there,<lb />
but then we'd be taking a stand.<lb />
Thus, this editorial would have a<lb />
purpose which, of course, it<lb />
doesn't.<lb />
No purpose, that is, except that<lb />
which was earlier stated filling<lb />
space a purpose, which, we<lb />
might add, has been duly ac-<lb />
complished.<lb />
This editorial has been brought<lb />
to you in part by Frank, who<lb />
delivers The East Carolinian<lb />
faithfully every Tuesday and<lb />
Thursday so that you can read<lb />
meaningless editorials like this<lb />
one.<lb />

Art, Business Students:<lb />
'Two Peas In A Pod?'<lb />
By PAT O'NEILL<lb />
Art students and business students:<lb />
two peas in a pod.<lb />
I can hear the cries of resentment<lb />
already. "Blasphemy screams the art<lb />
major. "How dare you compare me<lb />
with those talentless capitalists<lb />
"Absurd responds the business ma-<lb />
jor. "Don't categorize me with that<lb />
bunch of flakes<lb />
Sorry folks, but when you come right<lb />
down to it, there's not a whole lot of dif-<lb />
ference between these two groups of<lb />
people. (My apologies to the excep-<lb />
tions.)<lb />
Ralph Nader's visit to ECU a couple<lb />
of weeks ago merely reinforced what I<lb />
already believe. "Our country was not<lb />
founded by business majors Nader<lb />
said. Nor, might I add, was it founded<lb />
by art majors. But both of these groups<lb />
certainly played a role in the founding of<lb />
this nation, and both should be concern-<lb />
ed about where it's headed.<lb />
Nader said that lethargy is the most<lb />
important power in the world. I agree.<lb />
And I might add that "apathy is the<lb />
other side of ignorance The key words<lb />
are lethargy and apathy. Ignorance is a<lb />
condition that I can tolerate, but the<lb />
other two ah, they can destroy the<lb />
world! With ignorance, one is afflicted.<lb />
Apathy, on the other hand, is a cons-<lb />
cience choice.<lb />
Many times I have heard comments<lb />
from business majors about stories ap-<lb />
pearing in The East Carolinian:<lb />
"Business majors don't care about<lb />
what's going on in El Salvador I was<lb />
told. "We want to know about jobs<lb />
Art students often echo the perennial<lb />
student cry: "I have no time for social<lb />
action; my work is all so consuming<lb />
Nader also mentioned that Americans<lb />
watch an average of 25 hours of TV each<lb />
week. I wonder how many people who<lb />
claim a lack of time are avid television<lb />
watchers.<lb />
You don't have to be a corporate<lb />
president to know that what's happening<lb />
in El Salvador is vitally important to the<lb />
business world. The whole world is in-<lb />
tricately connected by business transac-<lb />
tions. Any responsible businessperson<lb />
should be able to see the necessity of<lb />
knowing what's going on in El Salvador<lb />
or any nation, for that matter.<lb />
Last October, I wrote a feature story<lb />
about a group called Artists for Sur-<lb />
vival, an organization whose members<lb />
attempt to reach people emotionally<lb />
through the language of art Their ex-<lb />
hibitions include works expressing the<lb />
horror of war and also a vision of peace<lb />
and joy. In short, these artists use their<lb />
work to make important social<lb />
statements.<lb />
After I wrote this story, I was hopeful<lb />
that I would get some positive feedback<lb />
from ECU art students. My hopes soon<lb />
faded. Perhaps my writing colleague Jay<lb />
Stone sums it up best: "It's simply not<lb />
chic to give a damn about other people's<lb />
suffering he told me. Nor is it chic to<lb />
care about our role in their suffering, I<lb />
might add.<lb />
Raplh Nader showed us what happens<lb />
to our world when big businesses decide<lb />
to abuse it. He referred to pollution,<lb />
white-collar crime and the various types<lb />
of advertising he referred to as<lb />
"corporate violence Today's business<lb />
majors have a responsibility to rid their<lb />
discipline of this violence Nader speaks<lb />
of.<lb />
Art students are truly blessed with the<lb />
ability to graphically express emotions,<lb />
both their own and ours. It's a shame<lb />
that they're unable (mainly because of<lb />
society's economic priorities) to fully use<lb />
this ability to improve our world.<lb />
Mark Twain once said, "Don't let<lb />
your studies interfere with your educa-<lb />
tion Once again, I agree. The world is<lb />
getting smaller and smaller the<lb />
bombs, bigger and bigger. Let's begin to<lb />
work together to make it "chic" to care<lb />
about the suffering people in it.<lb />

SGA Funding Draws Mixed Views<lb />
I would like to thank the staff of The<lb />
East Carolinian for the fine editorial in<lb />
Tuesday's paper, in which they took a<lb />
stand on attempting to educate the stu-<lb />
dent body on SGA funding.<lb />
It was pointed out that the schools of<lb />
Music and Art continue to request an-<lb />
nual funding from the SGA for their<lb />
operating budgets. Having lived with a<lb />
music major for two years, I have<lb />
witnessed the shortcomings the music<lb />
school has had to contend with.<lb />
However, I would like to address the<lb />
issue of whether or not this is fair.<lb />
First of all, although the schools of<lb />
Music, Art, etc do not receive all the<lb />
funding they need, neither does anyone<lb />
else. The business and medical schools,<lb />
for example, don't request annual<lb />
funds from the SGA, yet no one would<lb />
argue that these schools are just as<lb />
well-known and have tight budgets<lb />
they must also meet.<lb />
I wrote a letter to the Vice<lb />
Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr.<lb />
Robert Maier earlier this year, and in<lb />
so many words, he said that the School<lb />
of Music was receiving the same pro-<lb />
portional amount as every other school<lb />
and department on campus. So is this<lb />
really fair that these schools should<lb />
receive additional funds from student<lb />
activity fees over and above what they<lb />
receive from tuition and state taxes?<lb />
Just to reiterate, it is the Student<lb />
Government Association. Every stu-<lb />
dent all 13,500 is a member of the<lb />
SGA. We are here to represent student<lb />
organizations. There are more than 200<lb />
student groups on campus recognized<lb />
by the Division of Student Life. Last<lb />
year, fewer than SO of these groups<lb />
received funds from the SGA.<lb />
Therefore, is it also fair to numerous<lb />
student groups to be denied funds<lb />
while schools and departments are con-<lb />
tinually funded?<lb />
I hope the upcoming SGA leaders<lb />
will consider these points when<lb />
distributing student fees in the future. I<lb />
feel it is way past time the entire stu-<lb />
dent body takes a stand and demands<lb />
what is truly theirs.<lb />
Bob Mills<lb />
SGA Vice President<lb />
On The Other Hand<lb />
This letter is in response to the<lb />
"SGA Funding" editorial in the Tues-<lb />
day, April 12 issue of The East Caroli-<lb />
nian.<lb />
First off, I believe that the Arts use<lb />
the money to put the school's best foot<lb />
forward in the outside community. The<lb />
Arts programs at ECU are among the<lb />
best in this part of the country. The<lb />
School of Music, which you so wan-<lb />
tonly paint as the villain of all of the<lb />
SGA's financial problems, is one of the<lb />
finest music programs from a state-<lb />
supported university in the nation. You<lb />
don't see North Carolinians (or South<lb />
Carolinians or Virginians) flocking to<lb />
State or Chapel Hill for music educa-<lb />
tion, because those schools' programs<lb />
aren't up to the same level as ECU's<lb />
School of Music (if those schools have<lb />
programs at all). The same goes for the<lb />
schools of Art and Drama.<lb />
Secondly, you suggest that the Inter-<lb />
Fraternity Council needs the money<lb />
because they have "been consistently<lb />
denied office space Maybe, but the<lb />
IFC doesn't get money from the SGA.<lb />
The IFC gets its money from frat dues.<lb />
And I may be wrong (correct me if I<lb />
am, IFC), but I don't think that the<lb />
IFC would want to raise frat dues just<lb />
for office space, because, at the present<lb />
time, that is the only way they can get<lb />
the money.<lb />
Thirdly, I don't really think that this<lb />
is so pressing a problem to the SGA. I<lb />
really think that it is just some personal<lb />
vendetta that Eric Henderson has<lb />
against the School of Music.<lb />
David R Pavne<lb />
Freshman, Drama<lb />
SGA Eats<lb />
I am writing this letter to protest the<lb />
SGA's actions on April 11. In this<lb />
meeting, the SGA appropriated funds<lb />
for its own banquet. I am a member of<lb />
the SGA Appropnations Committee<lb />
Currently, we are in the process of<lb />
?i?minin8 appropriations for the<lb />
1983-84 school year. This vear. the<lb />
SGA has approximately $60,000 for<lb />
appropriations to student groups We<lb />
Je"lv requests for more than<lb />
J2U0,000. In our process of budget cut-<lb />
ting, the first item cut for all student<lb />
groups was food (banquets).<lb />
By appropriating student funds for<lb />
us own banquet, the SGA has set itself<lb />
upon a pedestal above all other student<lb />
organizations. The purpose of SGA is<lb />
ZJ studcnts, not to abuse their<lb />

Stress Of Village Green Explosion Discussed<lb />
By PATRICK<lb />
O'NEILL<lb />
Suft V incr<lb />
Jack Smith, a na-<lb />
tionally known post-<lb />
traumatic stress<lb />
researcher, was in<lb />
Greenville Tuesday to<lb />
lead a discussion<lb />
among students in-<lb />
volved in the March 2<lb />
explosion at the<lb />
Village Green Apart-<lb />
ment complex.<lb />
Seven ECU<lb />
students displaced by<lb />
the explosion did not<lb />
attend Smith's discus-<lb />
sion at the urging of<lb />
their attorneys.<lb />
One ECU student<lb />
was killed and a dozen<lb />
others were injured in<lb />
the explosion.<lb />
Smith came to<lb />
Greenville at the in-<lb />
vitation of ECU and<lb />
Greenville mental<lb />
health experts who<lb />
were concerned about<lb />
the effects the explo-<lb />
sion is having on<lb />
those involved.<lb />
Kenneth Haigler,<lb />
an attorney represen-<lb />
ting the seven ECU<lb />
students who didn't<lb />
attend Smith's pro-<lb />
gram claimed that<lb />
because his clients<lb />
were already receiving<lb />
"quality medical<lb />
care" he felt it was<lb />
best for them not to<lb />
attend.<lb />
Haigler initially<lb />
claimed that his firm<lb />
was unable to find out<lb />
who was sponsoring<lb />
the program. "We<lb />
contacted two or three<lb />
people with the<lb />
university and never<lb />
got our calls return-<lb />
ed Haigler said.<lb />
Later, Haigler<lb />
claimed his secretary<lb />
had never actually<lb />
made the calls to ECU<lb />
officials, but had in-<lb />
dicated on a note that<lb />
she had done so. It<lb />
was "a little case of<lb />
trying to please the<lb />
boss Haigler said.<lb />
Smith, a Vietnam<lb />
veteran, decided to<lb />
research post-<lb />
traumatic stress when<lb />
he returned from<lb />
Vietnam and realized<lb />
the mental health pro-<lb />
fession was unable to<lb />
meet the post-war<lb />
stress needs that he<lb />
and other veterans<lb />
were having.<lb />
Smith informed the<lb />
five students who at-<lb />
tended the discussion<lb />
that post-traumatic<lb />
stress disorders were<lb />
normal human<lb />
responses to disaster<lb />
situations. "It's a<lb />
very powerful pro-<lb />
cess, but it's one that<lb />
occurs over time, and<lb />
it will pass on Smith<lb />
said.<lb />
Smith said the<lb />
students were going<lb />
through a rebuilding<lb />
process that-would br-<lb />
ing them back into the<lb />
real world.<lb />
Smith said one of<lb />
the symptoms of post-<lb />
traumatic stress was<lb />
 intrusive thoughts"<lb />
which conjured up<lb />
images, in daydreams<lb />
or nightmares, of the<lb />
tragic event they ex-<lb />
perienced.<lb />
Smith said that<lb />
those involved in the<lb />
explosion might also<lb />
experience mental tur-<lb />
moil such as loss of<lb />
concentration, a fail-<lb />
ing memory and feel-<lb />
ings of helplessness.<lb />
He said some people<lb />
may fear that the<lb />
disaster will happen<lb />
again. Smith said loud<lb />
noise or a certain<lb />
location can cause this<lb />
to hannen.<lb />
Smith said that peo-<lb />
ple may experience<lb />
guilt and will often<lb />
ask themselves "What<lb />
if questions.<lb />
On the positive<lb />
side, Smith noted that<lb />
people involved in a<lb />
tragic event will often<lb />
adopt some type of<lb />
"survivor mission" as<lb />
a way of creating a<lb />
positive lesson from<lb />
the tragedy.<lb />
Smith said his own<lb />
Vietnam experience<lb />
was an example of a<lb />
positive experience<lb />
emerging from a<lb />
tragic event. "It (the<lb />
Vietnam experience)<lb />
has become a positive<lb />
thing in my life<lb />
Smith said.<lb />
Assistant Professor<lb />
of Pyschology Susan<lb />
McCammon, a coor-<lb />
dinator of the event,<lb />
said that at least one<lb />
student who had in-<lb />
itially planned to at-<lb />
tend the discussion<lb />
called her on Tuesday<lb />
night to inform her he<lb />
would not be atten-<lb />
ding because his at-<lb />
torney had advised<lb />
him not to.<lb />
"One wonders<lb />
what the motives or<lb />
the assumptions the<lb />
attorneys may have<lb />
been making in advis-<lb />
ing their clients not to<lb />
attend a presenta-<lb />
tion said one<lb />
member of the special<lb />
committee, adding<lb />
that the law firm<lb />
should have done a<lb />
more thorough check<lb />
on the committee's<lb />
work before advising<lb />
their clients not to at-<lb />
tend.<lb />
In concluding,<lb />
Smith told students<lb />
involved in the explo-<lb />
sion to talk with other<lb />
people who went<lb />
through the ex-<lb />
perience and seek pro-<lb />
fessional help if they<lb />
need it. "It's a normal<lb />
process and what I<lb />
want to suggest is that<lb />
they accept the fact<lb />
they're going through<lb />
a process Smith<lb />
said.<lb />
The people involv-<lb />
ed in coordinating the<lb />
discussion said if<lb />
those involved con-<lb />
tinued to have pro-<lb />
blems dealing with the<lb />
explosion, they<lb />
should get in contact<lb />

Dillard 's Latest Continues In<lb />
Pulitzer Prize Winning Style<lb />
By MIKE HAMER<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The island where I live is peopl-<lb />
ed with cranks like myself. In a<lb />
cedar-shake shack on a cliff <lb />
but we all live like this is a man<lb />
in his thirties who lives alone with<lb />
a stone he is trving to teach to<lb />
talk.<lb />
In Teaching a Stone to Talk<lb />
(Harper and Row), Annie Dillard<lb />
continues in the tradition of her<lb />
1975 Pulitzer Prize winner,<lb />
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.<lb />
Dillard's writing and her powers<lb />
of observation are every bit as<lb />
acute as they were in Pilgrim; her<lb />
vision and writing have matured<lb />
in the intervening years.<lb />
As in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,<lb />
there is a common thematic<lb />
thread binding these essays<lb />
together. That thread is the<lb />
search for God among all of the<lb />
many and strange ways that crea-<lb />
tion manifests itself to man. Ms.<lb />
Dillard once explained to an in-<lb />
terviewer that, "Art is my in-<lb />
terest, mysticism my message,<lb />
Christian mysticism<lb />
In the essay "Teaching a Stone<lb />
to Talk Dillard begins with a<lb />
description of the eccentric young<lb />
man described above who actual-<lb />
ly is, in fact, trying to teach a<lb />
stone to talk. She goes from there<lb />
to a meditation about the impor-<lb />
tance of observing nature that<lb />
has a Zen quality to it. She says,<lb />
"That is why I take walks: to<lb />
keep an eye on things Annie<lb />
Dillard's sense of humor is<lb />
especially evident in this essay.<lb />
Annie Doak Dillard was born<lb />
in 1945 and grew up in Pitt-<lb />
sburgh, Pennsylvania. Much of<lb />
her early life was spent with such<lb />
books as Wuthering Heights, The<lb />
The Dodge Shelby Charger:<lb />
Detroit's New Tun' Machine<lb />
By GORDEN IPOCK<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
A dozen years ago, G.M Ford and Chrysler were<lb />
healthy and happy. Car sales were booming, par-<lb />
ticularly in the under-30, performance-car market.<lb />
When it came to building asphalt burners for lead-<lb />
footed teenagers, foreign car manufacturers weren't<lb />
even in th same bracket with Detroit. The big three<lb />
had the lucrative youth market to themselves.<lb />
But after a decade of leapfrogging gasoline prices,<lb />
seven-liter V8s have gone the way of the dinosaur.<lb />
The money that used to buy Road Runners and<lb />
GTO's is now buying Z-Cars and Supras, and<lb />
domestic car sales have sunk so low that the big three<lb />
nearly became the big two.<lb />
But Detroit is ready to recapture some of that lost<lb />
performance market. For the first time in several<lb />
years, Detroit is building fast cars again, cars that<lb />
handle well and are fun to drive.<lb />
The 1983'2 Dodge Shelby Charger is the best<lb />
combination of economy and spirited performance<lb />
to ever come out of Detroit. A radical departure<lb />
from earlier speed machines, the new Shelby is a<lb />
design that Ford and G.M. will surely copy. It is<lb />
radical in two respects.<lb />
First, the new Charger is nothing like the two-ton<lb />
torpedo that is seen churning down dirt roads and<lb />
bulling through cow pastures each week on the<lb />
Dukes of Hazard. The big orange Dodge Charger<lb />
that the Dukes affectionately refer to as "General<lb />
Lee" is as out of step with Chrylser's present think-<lb />
ing as the Dukes are with life in Manhattan. Chrysler<lb />
has staked its future on front-wheel-drive cars, and<lb />
the new Charger with a transversely-mounted, in-<lb />
line-four-cylinder engine coupled to front-wheel-<lb />
drive is on the cutting edge of Chrysler's new<lb />
technology.<lb />
Perhaps even more surprising, especially to Ford<lb />
devotees, is that Carroll Shelby, the Lemans winning<lb />
Texan that created a legend with his Ford-powered<lb />
Cobras and Shelby Mustangs in the 60s, has teamed<lb />
up with Chrysler to lead their charge back into the<lb />
performance arena. Who would have ever thought<lb />
Shelby, retired to chicken ranching and selling his<lb />
own brand of Texas chili, would be squeezing extra<lb />
horsepower from a four-banger Dodge.<lb />
But squeeze and tweak he has. With basic back-<lb />
yard engineering - raising compression, advancing<lb />
spark, enrichening the carburetor, retading cam-<lb />
shaft timing and lowering the final-drive ration <lb />
Shelby has the 2.2 liter engine pumping out 107<lb />
horsepower, strong enough to push the 2400 pound<lb />
car through the quarter-miler in 15.9 seconds at 86<lb />
mph. That's faster than Firebird Trans Am, Camaro<lb />
Z-28, Datsun 280-ZX, Porsche 924 and Toyota<lb />
Supra all cars that cost considerably more than<lb />
the $8,300 Shelby Charger. Top speed is 117 mph.<lb />
Also, the Shelby corners like a go-kart. No big<lb />
suspension modifications by Shelby. Just shorter,<lb />
stiffer springs heavier shocks and 15-inch, 50-series<lb />
See DETROIT, Page 7<lb />
Five Little Peppers, Gone With<lb />
the Wind, From Here to Eternity,<lb />
and Native Son. When she was<lb />
ten she discovered The Field<lb />
Book of Ponds and Streams,<lb />
which became a workbook for<lb />
many sessions in neighborhood<lb />
ponds and brooks.<lb />
After she graduated from high<lb />
school in 1963, Annie Doak went<lb />
to Hollins College, near Roanoke<lb />
in southwestern Virginia, where<lb />
she studied English and creative<lb />
writing. She received her BA in<lb />
1967 and her MA in 1968. She<lb />
wrote her master's thesis on<lb />
Thoreau's Walden. In 1974 she<lb />
published Tickets for a Prayer<lb />
Wheel, a collection of poems<lb />
soon forgotten when Pilgrim at<lb />
Tinker Creek appeared the same<lb />
year. In 1977 she published Holy<lb />
the Firm, a much shorter book<lb />
with a more overtly religious<lb />
tone. In 1982 Dillard published<lb />
Living by Fiction, a book of<lb />
literary criticism.<lb />
Like Thoreau, Dillard's source<lb />
of inspiration comes primarily<lb />
from nature. This was the case<lb />
throughout PUgrim at Tinker<lb />
Creek. But here the inspiration<lb />
comes from other sources as well:<lb />
from travel, books, children, her<lb />
past, and, in one instance, from a<lb />
singing group playing in a<lb />
Catholic church.<lb />
One of my favorite sketches in<lb />
this book is "Living Like<lb />
Weasels Here Dillard describes<lb />
the rare excitement of meeting a<lb />
weasel in the wild. She takes the<lb />
encounter a step further. She<lb />
says,<lb />
 missed my chance. I should<lb />
have gone for the throat. I should<lb />
have lunged for that streak of<lb />
white under the weasel's chin and<lb />
held on, held on through mud<lb />
and into the wild rose, held on<lb />
for a dearer life. We could live<lb />
under the wild rose wild as<lb />
weasels, mute and uncomprehen-<lb />
ding. I could very calmly go wild.<lb />
I could live two days in the den,<lb />
curled, leaning on mouse fur,<lb />
sniffing bird bones, blinking,<lb />
licking, breathing musk, my hair<lb />
tangled in the roots of grasses.<lb />
This is an excellent book.<lb />
There's nothing political or<lb />
earth-shattering here, just some<lb />
of the best nonfiction meditative<lb />
prose being written today.<lb />

Rutabagas And Lemons<lb />
Were More Fun Than<lb />
Just About Anything<lb />
By ZACK PERKINSON<lb />
SlsffWrtter<lb />
Gather round, O my children,<lb />
and 1 will tell you of an age long<lb />
forgotten in the mists of time. An<lb />
age before rock n' roll, before<lb />
electronic distortion, before<lb />
record companies dictated the<lb />
tastes of the generations. It was a<lb />
time of zoot suits, hep jive, and<lb />
Louis Jordan. Jitterbugging was<lb />
an art that your parents knew<lb />
before the mortgage and the doc-<lb />
tor's bills erased their memories<lb />
and time itself seemed to be ac-<lb />
celerated by technology<lb />
Oh, come on, when is this guy<lb />
going to get to the point? Right<lb />
now. And the point is fun.<lb />
Unrestrained, un-self conscious,<lb />
worthwhile fun. How many times<lb />
have you gone downtown trying<lb />
to have a good time and ended up<lb />
walking home with your hands in<lb />
your pockets wondering why you<lb />
even went out at all? Well, if you<lb />
came to see the Rutabaga<lb />
Brothers and Lemon Sisters Fri-<lb />
day and Saturday night at the<lb />
New Deli then you kn6w thav<lb />
there were about 250 people who<lb />
had more fun than just about<lb />
anybody in town on those two<lb />
nights. It's virtually impossible<lb />
for anybody (and that includes<lb />
business majors, med students,<lb />
and East Carolina instructors) to<lb />
not have a good time seeing the<lb />
Rutabagas. They set an atten-<lb />
dance record at the Deli' Friday<lb />
night and then broke it Saturday<lb />
night, that's impressive.<lb />
Their music is an ecclectic<lb />
blend (rather than array, because<lb />
of the connecting thread of<lb />
upbeat rhythm and blues) of<lb />
some of the jumpingest tunes of<lb />
the past fifty years. Louis Jor-<lb />
dan, the Boswell Sisters, Lee<lb />
Dorsey, and the Burnette<lb />
Brothers are just a few of their in-<lb />
fluences. They are what Manhat-<lb />
tan Transfer would be if the<lb />
Transfer didn't have a slick<lb />
showbiz veneer. For those old<lb />
enough to remember, Dan Hicks<lb />
and the Hot Licks are probably<lb />
the closest musically to the<lb />
Rutabagas and Lemons. Tight<lb />
vocal harmonies by Laura, Sue,<lb />
and Amy Lemon (the shy girls'<lb />
stage names their real names<lb />
are Laura Davis, Sue Luddeke,<lb />
and Amy Hazard) along with the<lb />
rock steady rhythm of<lb />
bassistvocalist Mike Hamer and<lb />
drummer Bobby Aiken are the<lb />
foundation of their sound.<lb />
Guitarist John Worthington is<lb />
perhaps the best in Greenville,<lb />
playing a clean, unpretentious<lb />
wyle that points up the Lemons'<lb />
harmonies and his own rockabilly<lb />
singing. Amy Lemon blows a<lb />
mean sax when she isn't crooning<lb />
and even pitches in with a rhythm<lb />
guitar and flute when the need<lb />
arises. They are truly versatile.<lb />
So, if you want a good time, go<lb />
see the Rutabaga Brothers and<lb />
the Lemon Sisters. Take six and<lb />
call me in the morning. It's just<lb />
what the doctor ordered.<lb />

The second of two parts.<lb />
E.C Do you think that the news media is respon-<lb />
sive to the criticism of what is deemed as a double<lb />
stance by Reagan on disarmament?<lb />
BERRIGAN: I think they are now for a variety of<lb />
reasons. Reagan's popularity polls at the present<lb />
time are at an all time low because of what is called<lb />
the surrogate scandal out of the E.P.A. That's one<lb />
reason, then too, less and less do the American peo-<lb />
ple believe in his true sincerity towards disarma-<lb />
ment.<lb />
E.C You mentioned before that the legislative pro-<lb />
cess is not the answer to stopping the arms race<lb />
because they're redressing their own evils. That's<lb />
pretty frustrating to a lot of Americans (that the<lb />
legislative process doesn't work). What are you tell-<lb />
ing people who want the process to work or who<lb />
want to begin a new process?<lb />
BERRIGAN: I'm saying that the law is increasingly<lb />
evidenced as being very much central to the pro-<lb />
blem. Without getting into it real heavily, the law in<lb />
any society like our own funds to represent the<lb />
powerful, the wealthy, the privileged. They tend to<lb />
get the kind of law that they need in order to max-<lb />
imize their own profits and to enhance their own<lb />
power. Our socity is cetainiy an example of that. The<lb />
lobbies that operate against the U.S. congress in<lb />
order to get their way, the kind of legislation that<lb />
they need to override any sort of voice from the peo-<lb />
ple.<lb />
E.C What should people do then?<lb />
BERRIGAN: Well the people have to, if you will,<lb />
raise a counter balancing lobby. They have to create<lb />
an oppostion party. They have to take to the streets<lb />
by the millions, hopefully and preferably non-<lb />
violently, in order to compensate and overcompen-<lb />
sate for this voice in government which is overriding<lb />
right now. The poor are being sold off, even the<lb />
middle class people are being affected. The straight<lb />
middle class people are losing their homes. Farmers,<lb />
who could be judged among the middle class, are<lb />
losing their farms in really considerable and shock-<lb />
ing numbers. So, the representation of even the mid-<lb />
dle class is something of a thing of the past, right<lb />
now.<lb />
E.C What would you counsel people to do? To pull<lb />
out of the whole legislative process, not write letters<lb />
to their congress people, and senators, get into a<lb />
more direct action type of resistance.<lb />
BERRIGAN: Well if American people could unders-<lb />
tand that the only truly effective way of operating<lb />
publicly and politically is to do the right thing. If<lb />
they could maybe sift that statement through and<lb />
look at it in some depth, not to go with the represen-<lb />
tatives, not to go with politicians, not to trust them<lb />
but to trust their own consciences and to do the right<lb />
thing. And if something is unjust and needs pro-<lb />
testing, and dissent and resistance, to do that that's<lb />
always been the role of the people in a society like<lb />
our own and there's no substitute for it, there never<lb />
will be.<lb />
E.C It seems to me that, looking back at what you<lb />
and Dan wrote during the Vietnam era, your greatest<lb />
sense of frustration came from the so called liberals.<lb />
What's your message to people working in social<lb />
justice areas outside of direct action opposing the<lb />
arms race?<lb />
BERRIGAN: I'd try to point out as gently as I could<lb />
that the approach of most liberals is a faithless ap-<lb />
proach. They don't believe in any higher power,<lb />
practically and seriously, than the machinery of the<lb />
state.<lb />
E.C Would you tell Mother Theresa, for instance,<lb />
that she needs to stop what she's doing and work to<lb />
resist the arms race?<lb />
BERRIGAN: Yes I think probably 1 would. I'd ask<lb />
Mother Theresa to reflect on the fact that India's a<lb />
nuclear power, and has exploded nuclear devices<lb />
with the help of Canada and with the help of the<lb />
U.S. India is a quite shocking variance from the ex-<lb />
ample of Ghandi today, and Ghandi is a national<lb />
hero over there, all the Indians claim him as such. I<lb />
would point that out to her and then perhaps I'd<lb />
even suggest that the crimes that she faces every year<lb />
in tending the poor are caused by a system which is<lb />
corporate, and its political structure, and its not<lb />
enough for her, or any of us, to bind up the wounds<lb />
of the poor and to give them hospitality and food<lb />
EC. How many times have you been arrested? Do<lb />
you ever keep track of it?<lb />
BERRIGAN: No. It probably would approach SO<lb />
now. I don't know. I don't care.<lb />

Pirate Signees Add Needed Height<lb />
Six high school basketball star<lb />
players signed a grant-in-aid with<lb />
ECU Wednesday, national sign-<lb />
ing day. This represents the most<lb />
players ever to sign with the<lb />
Pirates on the initial signing day.<lb />
"We are very pleased with all<lb />
six of these young men said<lb />
Head Coach Charlie Harrison,<lb />
who led the Pirates to a 16-13<lb />
finish this year. "Not only are<lb />
these fine basketball players, but<lb />
we've also signed quality young<lb />
men.<lb />
"All six players are coming to<lb />
East Carolina because they want<lb />
to play for the Pirates and not<lb />
because someone else did not<lb />
want them. We watched their pro-<lb />
gress all season and noted that<lb />
each one got better as the season<lb />
progressed. We feel this is impor-<lb />
tant, and an indication that their<lb />
talent level has yet to peak<lb />
The six include three conference<lb />
players-of-the-year, four with all-<lb />
state recognition and the possibili-<lb />
ty of one becoming the first seven-<lb />
footer in Pirate history.<lb />
The list includes: Leon Bass, a<lb />
6-10 center from Florence, S.C<lb />
Roy Smith, a 6-7 12 forward-<lb />
center from Gastonia; Derrick<lb />
Battle, a 6-6 forward from Nor-<lb />
thern Nash; William Grady, a 6-2<lb />
guard from Patterson, N.J Keith<lb />
Sledge, a 6-3 guard from Roanoke<lb />
Rapids; and Jack Turnbill, a 6-9<lb />
center from Wilmington.<lb />
Bass, only 17 years old, has an<lb />
arm reach of 7' 1 and has grown<lb />
5 12 inches over the last year. He<lb />
averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds<lb />
and three blocked shots per game<lb />
under Coach Jeff Scott. Among<lb />
his honors were all-five 4-A<lb />
Region, all-Pee Dee Region and<lb />
all-City.<lb />
"Leon will be a seven footer,<lb />
and there's just no telling how big<lb />
he will be Harrison said. "He<lb />
has great size with a great pair of<lb />
hands and a fine shooting touch.<lb />
Leon also has quick feet and a<lb />
willingness to work to get better.<lb />
Only his strength is a question<lb />
mark at this point<lb />
Bass selected ECU over Clem-<lb />
son, Virginia Commonwealth and<lb />
Tennessee-Chattanooga.<lb />
Smith averaged 21.6 points,<lb />
12.8 rebounds and five blocked<lb />
shots per game in leading Coach<lb />
G.C. Harrell's club to a 21-4<lb />
overall record, winners of the<lb />
Western 4-A conference. As the<lb />
pivot man for Hunter Huss,<lb />
Smith was named the player of-<lb />
the-year in the conference, along<lb />
with honorable mention all-state,<lb />
all-Piedmont, all-Gazette Land<lb />
and the Gastonia Gazette player-<lb />
of-the-year.<lb />
"Roy knows how to score<lb />
Charlie Harrison<lb />
Harrison said. "He's extremely<lb />
quick, quick around the basket<lb />
and a quick jumper. Roy has<lb />
grown progressively better<lb />
throughout the season. We feel<lb />
very good about his being a player<lb />
for us right now<lb />
Clemson, South Carolina and<lb />
Western Carolina were Smith's<lb />
final choices before deciding on<lb />
ECU.<lb />
Battle, player-of-the-year in the<lb />
Big East Conference, averaged 18<lb />
points, 14 rebounds and two<lb />
blocked shots in leading Coach<lb />
Bobby Dunn's club. He was nam-<lb />
ed honorable mention all-state,<lb />
all-Big East for two years, all-<lb />
region and second team all-East.<lb />
The power forward has started<lb />
for three seasons, is an outstan-<lb />
ding triple and vertical jumper in<lb />
track (fourth in state in triple<lb />
jump), and shoots over 60 percent<lb />
from the floor and 70 percent<lb />
from the line.<lb />
"Derrick is a quality person<lb />
and quality athletesummed up<lb />
Harrison. "He's a very good<lb />
shooter, plays big and plays hard.<lb />
We hope for an immediate con-<lb />
tribution<lb />
Other schools seeking Battle<lb />
were UNC-Wilmington, Furman<lb />
and Jacksonville.<lb />
Grady had actually signed wtih<lb />
an early committment in<lb />
November with ECU, another<lb />
first for the Pirates. He's a 6-2<lb />
guard from Eastside High in Pat-<lb />
terson, N.J. His honors this year<lb />
included second team all-state,<lb />
all-league, all-area and all-Passiac<lb />
County. In addition, Grady has<lb />
been selected to play in the<lb />
Bridgeport Classic, pitting the all-<lb />
stars of New Jersey versus those<lb />
of New York and Connecticut.<lb />
"William is the type young man<lb />
that not only can play various<lb />
roles on the basketball team, but<lb />
will be a great asset off the court<lb />
with his tremendous attitude.<lb />
He's a very enthusiastic young<lb />
man that has a way of being con-<lb />
tagious Harrison said.<lb />
Grady decided on ECU over<lb />
Rutgers, Boston University and<lb />
Northeastern.<lb />
Sledge received national<lb />
recognition by being selected to<lb />
BASKETBALL WEEKLY'S<lb />
honorable mention all-America<lb />
prep team. The big guard of small<lb />
forward in the Northeastern Con-<lb />
ference this season. Sledge has<lb />
been recognized as all-state, all-<lb />
East and all-conference for two<lb />
years, under coach Terry Fraaer.<lb />
"Keith is really a good<lb />
shooter said Harrison. "He can<lb />
flat fill it up. With hard work he<lb />
will be an asset to our program.<lb />
He has fine athletic ability, as<lb />
good an athlete as Bruce Pear-<lb />
tree<lb />
Those in the final runmng for<lb />
Siege were UNC-Wilmington.<lb />
Detroit, Virginia Commonwealth<lb />
and UNC-Charlotte.<lb />
Turnbill gives the Pirates added<lb />
size at 6-9, having played center<lb />
this season for New Hanover after<lb />
playing forward the previous<lb />
year, he averaged 15 points and 12<lb />
rebounds while receiving all-<lb />
conference and honorable men-<lb />

ROCKY MOUNT The<lb />
North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops<lb />
stole nine bases and took advan-<lb />
tage of four ECU errors Tuesday<lb />
afternoon to defeat the Pirates<lb />
5-4.<lb />
The loss was ECU's second in<lb />
as many days to the Bishops. On<lb />
Monday afternoon, NCW banged<lb />
out 16 hits and scored 12 runs to<lb />
overpower the Pirates.<lb />
ECU has now won just two of<lb />
their last eight games and are cur-<lb />
rently 15-11.<lb />
Tuesday's game saw the<lb />
Bishops score an unearned run in<lb />
the bottom of the tenth inning to<lb />
pull out the victory.<lb />
With one out, NCW left fielder<lb />
1 sr Moochie Medley reached op an<lb />
' r -errot and sioft second? After<lb />
another out, pinch-hitter Ron<lb />
Shorter ended the game with a<lb />
single to center field.<lb />
The Pirates had tied the score in<lb />
the eighth inning on freshman<lb />
Winfred Johnson's second home<lb />
run of the game.<lb />
ECU got a much better perfor-<lb />
mance on the pitcher's mound<lb />
than in Monday's contest. As<lb />
compared with the 16 hits Mon-<lb />
day night, the Bishops managed<lb />
only seven hits in Tuesday's game.<lb />
Pirate starter Charlie Smith pit-<lb />
ched the first five innings, giving<lb />
up four runs while walking five<lb />
and striking out one.<lb />
Bob Davidson came in for<lb />
Smith in the sixth, and did not<lb />
allow another run until Shorter's<lb />
game-winning hit.<lb />
The main problem one that<lb />
head coach Hal Baird said was as<lb />
much the pitchers' fault as the cat-<lb />
cher's was the ability of Jhfc<lb />
NCW players to steal bases.<lb />
The Bishops snagged nine bases<lb />
on the afternoon five of them<lb />
by second baseman Richard Mat-<lb />
tocks which was two more than<lb />
the total of base hits.<lb />
Two errors and a stolen base by<lb />
Mattocks in the first inning<lb />
resulted in NCW's first run.<lb />
The lead didn't last for long,<lb />
however, as ECU played long ball<lb />
in the second inning. Todd Evans<lb />
sent the first pitch of the inning<lb />
deep over the center field fence to<lb />
tie the game.<lb />
Only two pitches later, Johnson<lb />
put the Pirates in the lead with his<lb />
sixth home run of the season.<lb />
After ECU scored a run in the<lb />
third, NCW bounced back to<lb />
score twice in their half of the inn-<lb />
ing.<lb />
After leading off with a walk.<lb />
Mattocks proceeded to steal se-<lb />
cond and third. Terry Coates<lb />
walked and also stole second, and<lb />
then Mike DeLeone got the first<lb />
hit of the day off Smith, scoring<lb />
Mattocks.<lb />
A squeeze bunt by Charlie<lb />
Simpson scored Coates and NCW<lb />
took a 4-3 lead after three innings<lb />
with only two base hits to their<lb />
credit.<lb />
There was no more scoring until<lb />
Johnson's homer in the eighth<lb />
temporarily tied the game.<lb />
With their current 15-11 record,<lb />
ECU will have to win some impor-<lb />
tant games down the stretch if<lb />
they hope to be invited to the<lb />
ECAC-South tournament in<lb />
which they won last year.<lb />
This weekend, the Pirates will<lb />
play four big conference games in<lb />
three days. all away.<lb />
On Friday afternoon, ECU will<lb />
play a doubleheader with<lb />
American University. On Satur-<lb />
day, ECU plays William and f<lb />
Mary and travel to the Unfvertfty <lb />
of Richmond on Sunday.<lb />

The 6-0 Lady Pirate senior,<lb />
who scored 1,789 points in her<lb />
brilliant four-year career, was<lb />
listed as an honorable mention<lb />

This is the second all-America<lb />

The Lady Pirate softball team<lb />
blew the Louisburg Hurricanes<lb />
away Tuesday, winning both<lb />
doubleheader games, 13-4 and<lb />
3-0.<lb />
In the opener, the two teams<lb />
were tied 3-all, but the Bucs<lb />
scored five runs each in the last<lb />
two innings to gain an eight-run<lb />
lead.<lb />
ECU Head Coach Sue<lb />
Manahan was delighted at her<lb />
team's showing. "This is the first<lb />
time we have really exploded this<lb />
year she said. "It was very ex-<lb />
citing<lb />
The Pirates had 17 hits and<lb />
committed three errors, while<lb />
Louisburg finished with 11 hits<lb />
and five errors.<lb />
Leading hitters for the Pirates<lb />
were: Fran Hooks, three-for-five;<lb />
Cynthia Shepard, two-for-four;<lb />
and Robin Graves, who went two-<lb />
for-four.<lb />
The Lady Bucs won their sixth<lb />
shutout victory in the second<lb />
game. In the eighth inning, ECU<lb />
freshman Carla Alphin reached<lb />
first base on an error by the short-<lb />
stop. Hooks then singled and with<lb />
runners on first and second,<lb />
senior centerfielder Mitzi Davis<lb />
hit a triple. Davis went three-for-<lb />
four to lead the Pirates.<lb />
"In the second game, we had a<lb />
little trouble keeping the ball<lb />
down Manahan said, "because<lb />
their pitcher (Carnetta Williams)<lb />
was pitching so fiat.<lb />
"She started the first game, and<lb />
we had trouble with her then, but<lb />
they switched pitchers in the fifth<lb />
inning<lb />
Now 16-7, the Lady Bucs will<lb />
play at the UNC-Charlotte Invita-<lb />
tional this weekend.<lb />

Overton 's Dedication Propels ECU Sluggers<lb />
By KEN BOLTON<lb />
mUbi Sport Milor<lb />
For the last 14 years, there has<lb />
been one figure on the Pirate<lb />
baseball diamond that has con-<lb />
tributed greatly to the stability of<lb />
the ECU program.<lb />
That person is Gary Overton,<lb />
ECU's assistant baseball coach<lb />
for the last seven seasons.<lb />
But Overton's committment to<lb />
the ECU program goes far beyond<lb />
his seven years as assistant coach.<lb />
From 1969-73, while he was atten-<lb />
ding ECU, he was the team<lb />
manager of the Pirates.<lb />
Then, in 1974, Overton worked<lb />
as a graduate assistant and, in<lb />
1977, he began serving as assistant<lb />
coach.<lb />
The 31-year old Ahoskie native<lb />
has totally committed himself to<lb />
baseball here at East Carolina.<lb />
"ECU baseball is my pride and<lb />
joy Overton stated during a re-<lb />
cent Pirate practice. "I owe a lot<lb />
to the program because it has<lb />
given so much to me<lb />
When asked about the possibili-<lb />
ty of making a move to a head<lb />
coaching job somewhere, Overton<lb />
rejects the possibilities for now.<lb />
"At this point, I'm very content<lb />
with what I'm doing the sandy-<lb />
haired coach responded. "I'm<lb />
really happy here; happy with the<lb />
people I'm associated with and<lb />
with the city of Greenville<lb />
In past summers, Overton has<lb />
served as head coach of ECU's<lb />
summer league team. But with the<lb />
recent abolishment of the summer<lb />
league program, things won't<lb />
quite be the same this year.<lb />
"When I first heard about the<lb />
league being dropped, I thought<lb />
'Gosh, what am I going to do?<lb />
pendered Overton. "But this way<lb />
we're going to be able to do a lot<lb />
of extensive recruiting.<lb />
"We will be able to strengthen<lb />
that area (recruiting) by making as<lb />
many contacts as possible<lb />
Besides looking at future pro-<lb />
spects, Overton will also work at<lb />
ECU's popular summer camp<lb />
(June 14-20 and July 17-22). He<lb />
will also help out at Clemson and<lb />
N.C. State's camps.<lb />
As a rule, outfields at ECU<lb />
have been fundamentally sound<lb />
for years a fact that parallels<lb />
Overtons work.<lb />
Overton and head coach Hal<lb />
Baird split most of the instruc-<lb />
tional duties, but the outfield is<lb />
Overton's forte on defense.<lb />
Offensively, his main job is one<lb />
that is famous for bringing the<lb />
second-guessers out of the wood-<lb />
work third base coach.<lb />
Most people aren't aware of the<lb />
complexities involved in coaching<lb />
third base. His decision of<lb />
whether or not to send the runner<lb />
home can make the difference bet-<lb />
ween victory and defeat.<lb />
"When you're out there, you<lb />
have to always stay two or three<lb />
plays ahead Overton stated.<lb />
"There are a lot of factors that go<lb />
into making a decision<lb />
Overton said that there were no<lb />
less than five factors that had to<lb />
be considered in each situation.<lb />
Among them were: the spot in the<lb />
batting order, the number of outs,<lb />
the depth and positioning of the<lb />
outfielders and the speed of the<lb />
baserunners.<lb />
But the most important con-<lb />
sideration .according to Overton,<lb />
is the score. "We definitely take<lb />
less chances when we're behind<lb />
he said. "When we're ahead, it<lb />
gives us a better opportunity to<lb />
take chances<lb />
The Pirates have been going<lb />
through one of the worst slumps<lb />
in recent history over the last cou-<lb />
ple of weeks. But Overton is pro-<lb />
ud of the way that the team has<lb />
continued fighting.<lb />
"The record is disappointing,<lb />
but the play has not been Over-<lb />
ton commented. "We haven't had<lb />
the breaks that we've gotten in the<lb />
past, and we haven't reached our<lb />
peak yet.<lb />
"The team morale is very<lb />
good he added. "The players<lb />
are disappointed in the record<lb />
(15-11) but morale isn't affected<lb />
by the record. If anything, it has<lb />
pulled them closer. They are a real<lb />
good group of men<lb />
The Pirates hope to repeat as<lb />
champs of the ECAC-South con-<lb />
ference, and the next couple of<lb />
weeks will be crucial for their<lb />
chances.<lb />
If the ECU players can match<lb />
the 14-year dedication of their<lb />
assistant coach, then those<lb />
chances will be pretty good.<lb />
