Walters Answers Allegations<lb />
Of Refrigerator Mismanagement<lb />
B DEBORAH HOI AUNG<lb />
In response to an article in last<lb />
"hursday's edition o The East<lb />
Carolinian, SCiA Refrigerator Ren<lb />
Ml Managei Ed Walters denied<lb />
allegations that he gave refrigerators<lb />
away and that he has been un-<lb />
cooperative with slate auditors.<lb />
Walters claims that not only has<lb />
not given avvav any refrigerators<lb />
bui (ha: he has tracked down<lb />
several refrigerators which had been<lb />
before lie came into office.<lb />
"I've found several refrigerators<lb />
which had been lost a! least three<lb />
rs ago. At one time, there was a<lb />
 a general understanding.<lb />
ill owed those who worked up<lb />
office (refrigerator rentals) to<lb />
keep a refrigerator for free use for<lb />
the year.<lb />
"Thai was just one of the fringe<lb />
benefits which came with the job.<lb />
I he auditors recommended that we<lb />
do away with that because they said<lb />
it wasn't a good business policy<lb />
Walters also denied accusations<lb />
that he gave a "free" refrigerator to<lb />
Barrie Byland, 1980-81 Buccaneer<lb />
editor.<lb />
"Why would 1 give a refrigerator<lb />
to a girl 1 hardly even know and tell<lb />
her to keep it Walters said.<lb />
"There's no reason I'd ever do<lb />
that. 1 did give the Buc one<lb />
(refrigerator) to use for the year. 1<lb />
told them to turn it in at a truck<lb />
when they were done. No receipt<lb />
was written, of course, because I<lb />
didn't want any problems with them<lb />
claiming they had money due<lb />
them<lb />
Byland has submitted a statement<lb />
to Associate Dean tor Orientation<lb />
and Judiciary .lames Mallory citing<lb />
several specific instances when she<lb />
claims to have attempted to return<lb />
the refrigerator after a period o<lb />
time.<lb />
"Last summer Byland explain-<lb />
ed, "about at the end ot summer<lb />
school, my roommate and 1 talked<lb />
to Ed downtown, rhe subject ot my<lb />
refrigerator came up, and 1 asked<lb />
him what 1 should do with it.<lb />
"He told me to " keep it' and<lb />
something like 'it's just a little pre-<lb />
sent He gave me the impression<lb />
that it was his own little business<lb />
and the profits he made supported<lb />
their business. I believed him. I later<lb />
talked to David (Creech), and I ask-<lb />
ed him if it was SCiA affiliated, and<lb />
he said yes.<lb />
"I've given my statement to Dean<lb />
Mallory and I have no reason to<lb />
lie<lb />
Walters claims that he has tried to<lb />
get the refrigerator back on several<lb />
occasions but has failed to do so.<lb />
"I've tried to get the refrigerator<lb />
back. She won't tell me when I can<lb />
come by and get it. I don't even<lb />
know where it is Walters said.<lb />
Walters also denied statements<lb />
concerning his reluctance to talk<lb />
with an East Carolinian staff<lb />

buried earlier Mondav. The last<lb />
three victims have all been adults<lb />
ranging in age from 21 to 23 with<lb />
childlike builds. Two were mentally<lb />
retarded.<lb />
It took rescue units, who had<lb />
tremble finding a place to get their<lb />
boats in the watei along the heavily<lb />
wooded bramble strewn banks,<lb />
more than an houi to get the corpse<lb />
out ol the river. It was sent to the<lb />

medical examiners prepared to<lb />

Discovery ot a body came during<lb />

last Wednesday. Police had not add<lb />

Jesse Grimes, 13. who had come<lb />

Moreover, the job market for<lb />
engineers increases at a yearly rate<lb />

March report by the College Place-<lb />

increase in engineering hiring at 16<lb />

1 he newest wrinkle in the job<lb />

NCES estimates the supply of<lb />
new teachers to be 780.000 in<lb />

Even now, 37 states, mostly in the<lb />

According to a survey titled<lb />

Michigan State, the market is<lb />
tightest for communication, human<lb />

He had been asphyxiated the same<lb />

other victims.<lb />
Five members o' the Guardian<lb />

Mclntosh. They removed the bronze<lb />

Due to the cutback in student<lb />
hours the library will not be offering<lb />
its traditional extended hours for<lb />
the upcoming exam period.<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center will be<lb />
offering extended hours for students<lb />
who need to study.<lb />
The center's extended hours will<lb />
be: Tuesday, April 28 through<lb />
Thursday, April 30 until 3 a.m. and<lb />
Sunday and Monday until 3 a.m.<lb />
In past years the library was kept<lb />
open until 3 a.m. for the use of<lb />
students who needed a place to<lb />
study or do last minute research.<lb />
However, a spokesperson for the<lb />
library said that due to the "cutback<lb />
in student hours the library will be<lb />
open only during its regularly<lb />
scheduled hours.<lb />
Mendenhall Student Center will<lb />
be offering several different services<lb />
for students during the exam period.<lb />
Special areas including the Reading<lb />
Room, Music Listening Center,<lb />
Billiards Center and Table Tennis<lb />
Center will be available for study<lb />
areas.<lb />
Study groups may request con-<lb />
ference rooms for group study.<lb />
The snackbar will be open from<lb />
10 p.m. until 2 a.m. and will be of-<lb />
fering coffee and light snacks. <lb />
limited selection of school supplies<lb />
will be available at the in formal ion<lb />
center news stand.<lb />
Paul Breitman, associate director<lb />
of the student center, stated, "We<lb />
hope that students will take advan-<lb />
tage of the extended hours both to<lb />
study and relax in the student<lb />
center<lb />

ed. Should one wish to be con-<lb />
sidered for the Basic Grant only, the<lb />
person should attach a note to the<lb />
forms to notify the office of his or<lb />
her wish.<lb />
Before financial aid programs can<lb />
be developed, a payment schedule<lb />
which is used to deternmine the<lb />
Basic Grant award must be publish-<lb />
ed. The word is the Federal Govern-<lb />
ment will not publish a schedule un-<lb />
til all questions pertaining to the<lb />
1981-82 funding are resolved;<lb />
however, the National Association<lb />
of Student Financial Aid Ad-<lb />
ministrators will distribute an unof-<lb />
ficial schedule and distribute it to all<lb />
institutions. Robert Boudreaux,<lb />
financial Aid Director indicated<lb />
that upon receipt o the unofficial<lb />
schedule, the EC I Financial Aid<lb />
Staff will begin processing com-<lb />
pleted applications. He cautioned<lb />
that in all probability an adjustment<lb />
in the Basic Grant award will be<lb />
necesary later on.<lb />
East Carolina University hopes to<lb />
mail the first group of award letters<lb />
on or about May 15. Students who<lb />
receive their award letters and<lb />
return the acceptance letters to the<lb />
Financial Aid Office by July 15 will<lb />
have checks prepared for them in<lb />

SGA Surplus<lb />
Legislature Needs New Planning<lb />
In this day and age, financial talk<lb />
is usually of budget cuts and<lb />
deficits, rarely of surpluses. As we<lb />
approach the end of the school year,<lb />
however, the SGA has more than<lb />
$47,000 in unappropriated funds<lb />
available.<lb />
Treasurer Kirk Little attributes<lb />
the surplus to what he calls a conser-<lb />
vative legislature. "They believe<lb />
very strongly in zero-based<lb />
budgeting he explained. "They<lb />
examine everything very closely and<lb />
were extremely conservative<lb />
On the surface the problem is a<lb />
pleasant one, surpluses are always<lb />
preferable to deficits, but the situa-<lb />
tion does point out one of the<lb />
SGA's fundamental problems-<lb />
lack of direction.<lb />
The legislature appropriated in<lb />
excess of S90,000 this year, but most<lb />
of it was done in a haphazard<lb />
 tshion. If g up came the<lb />
legislature with a request for fun-<lb />
ding, it was given consideration,<lb />
rhe ' '<lb />
i ,an how joA litoiicj should DC<lb />
spent, there was no overall game<lb />
plan.<lb />
Guidelines for appropriations<lb />
were established by Ben Singleton,<lb />
chairman of the appropriations<lb />
committee. But they do not specify<lb />
who should receive money, only<lb />
who should not receive it.<lb />
In other words, the SGA, for the<lb />
most part, took a passive role ap-<lb />
propriations when it should have<lb />
taken an active one.<lb />
Instead of waiting to be ap-<lb />
proached by groups, the SGA<lb />
Legislature needs to devise a master<lb />
plan for spending each year. This<lb />
plan should represent the organiza-<lb />
tion's goals for the year and ways to<lb />
implement these goals.<lb />
For instance, it has been sug-<lb />
gested that the SGA take a more ac-<lb />
tive role in the selection of faculty.<lb />
Many student governments sponsor<lb />
polls in which the student body is<lb />
given an opportunity to rate faculty<lb />
members. The results oi these polls<lb />
are then published, and students can<lb />
see how their peers rate the pro-<lb />
fessors they are likely to face.<lb />
Such a project would be a perfect<lb />
undertaking for student government<lb />
at ECU. Other woiihwh; e<lb />
endeavors could certainly be found<lb />
with a little initiative.<lb />
h til ! b aise I<lb />
aKiiig a hard-nosed attitude toward<lb />
spending, but that attitude can be<lb />
carried too far. It the SGA cannot<lb />
find worthwhile ways to spend the<lb />
money given to it, perhaps the<lb />
university should consider reducing<lb />
the amount it receives. After all,<lb />
what student would not be glad to<lb />
pay a little less in student fees?<lb />
Press Must Be Trusted<lb />
Recent events on campus and<lb />
around the country have brought up<lb />
the question of press ethics. Janet<lb />
Cooke of The Washington Post had<lb />
her Pulitzer Prize taken away and<lb />
lost her job when she admitted to<lb />
fabricating a story about an eight-<lb />
year-old heroin addict.<lb />
Several people have claimed in re-<lb />
cent weeks that The East Carolinian<lb />
has misquoted them or<lb />
misrepresented what they said.<lb />
Trusted as we are with a great<lb />
responsibility to the public, we have<lb />
a duty to report our mistakes when<lb />
our reporters are wrong.<lb />
But we also have an obligation to<lb />
stand by our reporters when we feel<lb />
they feel they are right.<lb />
Complete accuracy and objectivi-<lb />
ty are ideals to strive for. Bias is an<lb />
inherent part of human nature; it is<lb />
the reporter's job to minimize it and<lb />
keep it from affecting the story.<lb />
In this matter, editors can only<lb />
trust their reporters. But it is not a<lb />
trust easily given it must be earn-<lb />
ed through performance. Writers<lb />
should be broken in slowly and<lb />
given increased responsibility as<lb />
they earn it. This is how trust is<lb />
developed.<lb />
Regrettably, Janet Cooke<lb />
violated this trust, and we all suffer<lb />
for it. However, we can not allow<lb />
this violation to destroy trust that<lb />
has been established in other in-<lb />
stances, that would be guilt by<lb />
association.<lb />
Members of the press are in a<lb />
tenuous situation; our watchdog<lb />
role ensures that. We win few<lb />
friends, but popularity is not our<lb />
goal. Our goal is to inform our<lb />
readers as accurately and objective-<lb />
ly as is humanly possible.<lb />

Refrigerator Story Rebutted<lb />
This letter is in reference to your<lb />
feature on the S.G.A. refrigerators in<lb />
your April 23 issue. 1 would like to com-<lb />
mend Ed Walters for doing a fine job in<lb />
the past two years that he has been<lb />
refrigerator manager. 1 believe he has<lb />
"ii the interest of the students to heart<lb />
tit has done much to improve on the<lb />
system presently employed.<lb />
In my dealings with Ed in the past<lb />
three years I feel that he has successfully<lb />
and sincerely strived to improve the<lb />
refrigerator rental system. Although he<lb />
has not achieved all the goals he has<lb />
strived for in his management of this<lb />
operation, I still think he should be com-<lb />
mended rather than criticized for his ef-<lb />
forts as has been the policy of this bird-<lb />
cage liner, you call a newspaper, in this<lb />
instance and in the criticism of others in<lb />
the past.<lb />
CLYDE JOHNSON<lb />
Junior, Chemistry<lb />
Hoax Perpetrated<lb />
I would like to take this opportunity<lb />
to call to the attention of the student<lb />
population the hoax perpetuated upon<lb />
myself and several others by a so-called<lb />
reputable night club, Papa Katz.<lb />
Papa Katz, together with the Beta Mil<lb />
Sisters and Record Bar, co-sponsored a<lb />
highly advertised New Wave dance con-<lb />
test in which more than $500 was to be<lb />
awarded to the winners. Despite a<lb />
relatively large turnout on the contest<lb />
night, a Sunday, Papa Katz decided to<lb />
change the rules to suit their promo-<lb />
tional gimmick 1 suppose and in-<lb />
troduced a series of elimination dance<lb />
contests to be held on successive Sunday,<lb />
nights beginning with the next Sunday.<lb />
According to the nev rules ten couples<lb />
would be selected from these series oi<lb />
eliminations and each would return for<lb />
the "main dance off" on April 5.<lb />
My partner and I along with several<lb />
others showed up on that first night (a<lb />
rainy night immediately following spring<lb />
break) and due to a lack of turnout were<lb />
declared winners and thus could advance<lb />
to the finals by default.<lb />
Soon after this disasterous night, 1<lb />
noticed that all leaflets and advertise-<lb />
ment announcing the finals had dissap-<lb />
peared from the campus including the<lb />
one which had appeared in The East<lb />
Carolinian. Nevertheless, we showed up<lb />
for the finals anyway, but much to our<lb />
chagrin discovered that Papa Kat had<lb />
postponed the contest becaue o a<lb />
"broken water main<lb />
Disgusted as we were by the whole af-<lb />
fair, we were advised by the manager not<lb />
to be alarmed, but to return next Sun-<lb />
day, which we did a la the same results<lb />
minus the broken water main.<lb />
It seemed, thereafter, that nobody at<lb />
the establishments aforementioned<lb />
wanted to discuss the events leading up<lb />
to this sham.<lb />
My first reaction was anger, not<lb />
because I felt we were due any prize<lb />
money, but because o the dishonest)<lb />
surrounding the proceedings o the en-<lb />
tire contest. After seeking legal counsel,<lb />
I was advised not to pursue legal action<lb />
in small claims court which was my t:r;<lb />
objective, because ol the lengthiness and<lb />
time involved in such a suit; however, I<lb />
felt and still do that some retribution is<lb />
due for lost entrance tees. gas. and<lb />
preparations not to mention studs time<lb />
which was sacrificed.<lb />
My last appeal will be to you. the<lb />

Events Point To Hopeful Future<lb />
By DIANE ANDERSON<lb />
All good things must come to an end.<lb />
Summer is finally here, and with its begin-<lb />
ning, another school year has been com-<lb />
pleted. The year's events have been pro-<lb />
ductive, and some have taught us many<lb />
lessons, leaving us with a hopeful outlook<lb />
towards Fall of 1981.<lb />
Among the good things that have taken<lb />
place this year are the many philanthropic<lb />
projects that the campus has participated<lb />
in. Included in these activities are the Walk<lb />
for Humanity, Handicap Awareness Week<lb />
and other community projects and special<lb />
events.<lb />
Campus participation in these activities<lb />
was commendable, and 1 hope that next<lb />
year will see even more support and en-<lb />
thusiasm for such worthwhile endeavors.<lb />
The SGA had some ups and downs this<lb />
year, but with a new administration at the<lb />
helm, 1 am left with hopeful anticipation<lb />
for their success in the upcoming year.<lb />
A major improvement is expected in the<lb />
professionally and enthusiasm of the SGA<lb />
representatives, with a more smoothly run<lb />
administration.<lb />
A more clear interpretation of its con-<lb />
stitution and by-laws should prevent the<lb />
possibility of another set of elections like<lb />
the ones we recently experienced.<lb />
There is also the hope for more campus<lb />
interest and support for the SGA and its<lb />
activities. The administration will be<lb />
stronger with active support from the stu-<lb />
dent body.<lb />
Another exciting aspect of this year is<lb />
the expansion of the computer center. Its<lb />
continued growth will not only mean a<lb />
much more effective and up-to-date<lb />
registration system, but a streamlining of<lb />
all of the areas in which the system is used.<lb />
These modern innovations should also<lb />
be encouraged throughout the ad-<lb />
ministrative area of the university.<lb />
There were plenty oi activities around With everyone anticipating final exams<lb />
campus during the year to keep students and looking forward to the summer, we<lb />
busy when they wanted to get away from<lb />
studying. Mendenhall Student Center had<lb />
a variety of good movies, recreational<lb />
games; and the activities on the mall were<lb />
interesting and fun.<lb />
can be optimistic that next year will be bet-<lb />
ter than ever, and we can be proud to say<lb />
that we are part oi exciting, up and coming<lb />

Duty, Honor, Country<lb />
By DAVID E. GIEEESPIE<lb />
Duty, honor, country. The late Gen.<lb />
Douglas MacArthur made those words his<lb />
personal credo. The words occurred to me<lb />
recently as stories about the death of Gen.<lb />
Omar Nelson Bradley brought portions of<lb />
my life flashing past again.<lb />
I was in one of the divisions under<lb />
Bradley's command during World War II<lb />
in Europe. But I never saw him in person<lb />
until last January during the inaugural gala<lb />
at the Capital Center in Maryland. An aide<lb />
pushed the wheelchair-bound Bradley into<lb />
the spotlight for a well-deserved ovation.<lb />
I learned most that 1 know about<lb />
"Brad" from others. For example, Ernie<lb />
Pyle and Ernest Hemingway wrote about<lb />
him during the war. When it fell my lot to<lb />
write a World War 11 history of my regi-<lb />
ment after V-E Day, my research tracked<lb />
Gen. Bradley and his troops through<lb />
North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium and<lb />
Germany.<lb />
One thing that came through clearly<lb />
about Bradley was his concern for his<lb />
troops. He was a superb tactician, but he<lb />
shrank from spending the lives of his men<lb />
if advances could be made by other<lb />
means artillery and aerial bombard<lb />
ment, in particular, and swift armored en-<lb />
circlement of the kind that Gen. George S.<lb />
Patton mastered.<lb />
Bradley grieved over the heavy loss of<lb />
life in the Normandy invasion. He never<lb />
ceased to marvel at how American GIs,<lb />
weighed down with equipment, managed<lb />
to scale the heights oi the French coast<lb />
from the beaches and grab a toot hold on<lb />
the continent.<lb />
Later, the ex-Missouri farm boy got<lb />
criticism for the slowness oi the American<lb />
advance through the hedgerows oi' Nor-<lb />
mandy. But that was tough going. The<lb />
Germans were dug in well and had clear<lb />
fields of fire from one hedgerow to the<lb />
other. Tanks were vulnerable to<lb />
penetrating fire when they attempted to<lb />
cross the hedgerows. He also had the<lb />
messy job of having to clear out the Cher-<lb />
bourg Peninsula on the American flank<lb />
while trying to press ahead.<lb />
The Ninth Division, which I was to join<lb />
later in Belgium, had the job of cutting the<lb />
peninsula and then, with two other divi-<lb />
sions, taking the port of Cherbourg.<lb />
Ernie Pyle, who was killed later in the<lb />
war on a Pacific island by a Japanese<lb />
sniper, sent this report to the papers back<lb />
home: "The Ninth is good. It performed<lb />
like a beautiful machine in the Cherbourg<lb />
campaignIt kept tenanciously on the<lb />
enemy's neckIt never gave them (the<lb />
Germans) a chance to reassemble or get<lb />

Whether that statement is true or<lb />

The Versatile Potato<lb />
Offers Many Recipes<lb />
ByKATHYWFYFFR<lb />
Through the years, the poor<lb />
potato has gotten a bad name. Com-<lb />
pletely misunderstood, the potato<lb />
has acquired the reputation of a<lb />
calorie-laden monster, a diet<lb />
wrecker, a complexion ruiner (when<lb />

else. This hideous reputation is com-<lb />
pletely undeserved. Believe it or not.<lb />
a medium sized potato has approx-<lb />
imately the same number of calories<lb />
as an apple of the same size! In ad-<lb />
dition, potatoes contain vitamins A,<lb />
C and G as well as some minerals<lb />
and even a little protein.<lb />
When buying potatoes select<lb />
those that are fairly regular in shape<lb />

canned potatoes for their conve-<lb />
nience. They are easier to store but<lb />
may have an unpleasant "tinny"<lb />
taste from the can. Fresh potatoes<lb />
should be stored in a cool, dry, dark<lb />
place. Some cooks have discovered<lb />

'This Ain't No Foolin' Around'<lb />
By STEVE BACHNER<lb />
1 he mirrored ball high in the ar-<lb />
ched roof ot the new dance hall<lb />
remembered ils role, turning sedate-<lb />
ly to cast speckled circles o light on<lb />
the laces ot the dancers. Indeed the<lb />
dancers themselves, some with<lb />
shocking pink hair, others in wide-<lb />
shouldered leopard skin jump suits,<lb />
were two-stepping but not in the<lb />
fashion of the slick kids who had<lb />
danced in this very same club just a<lb />
couple ot years before.<lb />
No. this wasn't happening in<lb />
Greenville. It was the scene at one ot<lb />
Atlanta's hottest new clubs. I he<lb />
limelight, shortly alter the<lb />
Christmas holidays last year. I hese<lb />
dancers were hopping rhythmically<lb />
from one loot to another one.<lb />
two, one two to a brand new<lb />
beat, a mixture ol the hard<lb />
tour tour ot rock 'n' roll and the<lb />
slight syncopation of West Indian<lb />
ska music, pumped out by a British<lb />
band called I he Specials, a beat<lb />
that, coming through a few million<lb />
dollars worth of stereo equipment,<lb />
made standing still a waste of legs.<lb />
White shirts and shapeless jackets<lb />
apparently bequeathed by the death<lb />
of a salesman; grey porkpie hats<lb />
tucked over haircuts so short the<lb />
scalp gleamed through; ordinary<lb />
faces hidden partially by dark<lb />
sunglasses this was the look of<lb />
one group that hung tightly by the<lb />
bar for most of the evening.<lb />
Was there anything like this in the<lb />
'60s? Sure, the energy. Is there<lb />
anything even remotely like this here<lb />
in Greenville? No, not really. Not<lb />
yet, anyway.<lb />
The Atlanta crowd, like others all<lb />
over the U.S Britain, and beyond,<lb />
really lives the message carried in its<lb />
music: "It's better than pleasure<lb />
and it hurts more than pain Con-<lb />
tori your body and adjust your<lb />
soul" are the '50s-style instructions<lb />
to a dance song by James White and<lb />
The Blacks.<lb />
The energy of new wave is<lb />
reminiscent of the mid60s, when<lb />
that first British rock invasion<lb />
changed the look and heart of a<lb />
generation, and some fans contend<lb />
that the new music which in-<lb />
cludes more styles and sounds every<lb />
moment is just a revival of good<lb />
old rock 'n' roll.<lb />
One local band, All You Can Eat,<lb />
plays a sampling of the old '60s<lb />
tunes, cranking out familiar radio<lb />
classics like The Who's "Go to the<lb />
Mirror Boy but are at their best<lb />
when rendering current songs by<lb />
bands like The Police, Dirty Looks,<lb />
The Ramones, and Blondie. Here<lb />
one can listen to the pared-down<lb />
musical arrangements, the dissonant<lb />
guitar, the sometimes annihilating<lb />
beat, the steady bass-line, the<lb />
compressed-sounding voice of lead<lb />
vocalist Stacy Heller with its rich<lb />
edge trimmed off, the mingled wit<lb />
and cool despair of the lyrics.<lb />
So far All You Can Fat has battl-<lb />
ed at the constraints of Greenville's<lb />
Rathskeller but will move into JJ's<lb />
Music Hall this Friday and Saturday<lb />
night to play in conjunction with<lb />
Allan Handelman's "New Wave<lb />
Party The band's sound is<lb />
danceable and, appropriately<lb />
enough, there will be a dance con-<lb />
test on Friday night.<lb />
So, even in an area where disco<lb />
and beach music still hang in the air<lb />
as thick as the musk oil worn by<lb />
many of its followers, some local<lb />
bands are performing what is<lb />
undeniably music for the '80s, for<lb />

Student Ticket Pick-up Set f<lb />
f<lb />
t<lb />
f<lb />
A restructuring plan for I icklen<lb />
stadium has been announced by<lb />
East Carolina athletic director Ken<lb />
Karr. Included in the plan is a<lb />
system in which students will pick<lb />
up tickets (tree of charge) prior to<lb />
each home game.<lb />
Student will be sealed in the north<lb />
stands in sections 21-26. This<lb />
represents a change Irom past prac-<lb />
tices In the past students have been<lb />
allowed to sit anywhere in the north<lb />
stands that they desired.<lb />
1 he change came about, Karr<lb />
said, as a part o the athletic depart-<lb />
ment's attempt to create more<lb />
revenue<lb />
1 he ticket pick-up was brought<lb />
about to prevent hassles tor students<lb />
such as have been the case in the<lb />
past, when the) had to wait in long<lb />
lines on game dav to enter the<lb />
stadium with an ID and activity<lb />
card.<lb />
"That's the biggest change as tar<lb />
as the students arc concerned1 said<lb />
Assistant Athletic Director tor Pro-<lb />
motions Ken Smith in a meeting<lb />
with student leaders last week.<lb />
 1 hat should make things a lot<lb />
more hassle-tree on game days.<lb />
Now students will have a hard ticket<lb />
to get into the game<lb />
The entire plan as was linalied<lb />
last Iridav when Karr, Smith and<lb />
ticket manager Brenda l-dwards met<lb />
with student leaders tor a second<lb />
time is as follows:<lb />
. Students will sit in sections 21-26.<lb />
This area will he divided into two<lb />
different sections a Reserved<lb />
Seating section and a Reserved Sec-<lb />
tion.<lb />
Tickets to the Reserved Seating<lb />
section will put the students in a par-<lb />
ticular seat. These seats include all<lb />
of section 2b and Hal) of section 25.<lb />
I hese seats run from the 30-50-yard<lb />
line. Tickets to this section will he<lb />
distributed on a first-come, first-<lb />
served basis.<lb />
tickets to the Reserved Section<lb />
will seat students in any seat they<lb />
desire from the goal me to the<lb />
30-yard line.<lb />
(tor clarification on the locations oj<lb />
these two sections, see the stadium<lb />
diagram<lb />
2. Students may pick up their<lb />
tickets from Tuesday through<lb />
Thursday (during the week of a<lb />
Saturday home game) at 'he Minges<lb />
C oliseum ticket office or at the Cen-<lb />
tral Ticket OJJice at Mendenhalt<lb />
Student Center by showing their ID<lb />
and activity card.<lb />
Students MA Y MOT pick up<lb />
tickets on Fridays but will be allow-<lb />
ed to make late pick-ups oj tickets<lb />
remaining (ajter sales and earlier<lb />
pick-ups a. a special student win-<lb />
dow at Minges prior to the game on<lb />
Saturday. These tickets will be for<lb />
the Reserved Section only.<lb />
3. Each student will be allowed to<lb />
pick up their own ticket and one for<lb />
one other person by presenting the<lb />
ID and activity card of both in-<lb />
dividuals on pick-up days.<lb />
4. Each student will be allowed to<lb />
purchase one student guest ticket<lb />
per activity card for $4.50. (In the<lb />
past their was no reduced rate for<lb />
student guests) After purchasing the<lb />
one guest ticket the student may buy<lb />
as many other tickets as desired at<lb />
$9 each.<lb />
SPECIAL (iROUP PLAN<lb />
5. Student group seating will be<lb />
available in the Reserved Seating<lb />
section only. All groups (whether<lb />
fraternity, sorority, dormitory or<lb />
other) must register with the ticket<lb />
office, listing their intentions to take<lb />
part in the group seating plan prior<lb />
to the first home game.<lb />
Specific instructions will be<lb />
available at the beginning of the fall<lb />
semester.<lb />
A lottery system will be used<lb />
weekly to determine each group's<lb />
seating location.<lb />
Several gripes arose in the<lb />
meetings between Smith, Karr and<lb />
the students. The top area of con-<lb />
cern from the students pertained to<lb />
the goaline-to-50-yard line student<lb />
seating section.<lb />
Smith attempted to explain the<lb />
issue, noting that the remaining half<lb />
of the north stands would create<lb />
much-needed revenue.<lb />
"Students gripe, and for good<lb />
reason, about their student fees in-<lb />
creasing he said. "The only way<lb />
to curtail student fees is by finding<lb />
revenue someplace else. We hope<lb />
this new plan will make Ficklen<lb />
Stadium a much more profitable<lb />
place on Saturday afternoons<lb />

last Carolina athletic director<lb />
Ken Karr announced this past<lb />
weekend that the Pirate football<lb />
team will be (raveling to Big Eight<lb />
power Missouri for games in 1982<lb />
and 1983.<lb />
Earlier, Karr had announced that<lb />
the Bucs would travel to West<lb />
Virginia and Florida State in '82.<lb />
The West Viginia series starts this<lb />
fall in Morgantown with the Moun-<lb />
taineers scheduled to come to<lb />
Cireenville in 1987 and 1988.<lb />
The Florida State series covers<lb />
three years with 1982 and 1988 con-<lb />
tests in Tallahassee and a 1987 game<lb />
set for Cireenville.<lb />
Missouri finished last season with<lb />
an 8-3 regular season record before<lb />
going on to face Purdue in the<lb />
1 iberty Bowl, falling 28-25.<lb />
The Pirates will be taking on their<lb />
first Big Eight opponent ever in the<lb />
'82 game with the Tigers.<lb />
Handball Tryouts Set<lb />
fourth and fifth innings<lb />
and added three in the<lb />
seventh and two in ihe<lb />
eighth to breeze by the<lb />
Pirates.<lb />
The Pirates scored<lb />
two in the seventh when<lb />
Mark Shank scored on<lb />
an error and Mike Sor-<lb />
rell crossed home plate<lb />
on a fielder's choice.<lb />
The Bucs added one<lb />
more run in the ninth.<lb />
ECU had no extra<lb />
base hits in Sunday's<lb />
game, which dropped<lb />
its overall record to<lb />
28-13. The Seahawks<lb />
moved to 29-14.<lb />
One of two tryouts<lb />
for the south all-star<lb />
handball teams will be<lb />
held at ECU's<lb />
Memorial Gym this<lb />
Saturday from 8 a.m.<lb />
to 6 p.m. Both men and<lb />
women's tryouts are<lb />
being held.<lb />
The other location<lb />
where tryouts for the<lb />
south squad are being<lb />
held is in College Sta-<lb />
tion, Texas. Players<lb />
selected will represent<lb />
the south against the<lb />
north, east and west in<lb />
the 1981 National<lb />
Sports Festival, to be<lb />
held in Syracuse, N.Y.<lb />
July 23-29.<lb />
ECU Intramural<lb />
Director Wayne Ed-<lb />
wards noted that the<lb />
tryouts were not just<lb />
for members of the<lb />
Pirate handball team,<lb />
that any student was<lb />
welcome to tryout.<lb />
Edwards added that<lb />
several members of the<lb />
two ECU handball<lb />
teams had received high<lb />
marks from coaches<lb />
before and that they<lb />
have excellent chances<lb />
of making the south<lb />
squad.<lb />
"1 think we have a<lb />
real chance of having<lb />
some last Carolina<lb />
students to represent us<lb />
in New York he said<lb />
"Many of our players<lb />
have been looked at<lb />
real closely<lb />
Among the men who<lb />
are rated high chances<lb />
of making the squad<lb />
are Stan Reams,<lb />
Gerald Hall and Carl<lb />

have been impressive<lb />

and Shirley Brown.<lb />
Graduates Stuart Briley<lb />
and Gail O'Bnant also<lb />
will tryout with better<lb />
than average chances ol<lb />
making the squad.<lb />
Edwards explained<lb />
that the third National<lb />
Sports festival would<lb />
include 32 sports and<lb />
over 2,600athletes. The<lb />
festival, held twice<lb />
previously in Colorado<lb />
Springs, Colo is held<lb />
every non-Olympic<lb />
year and brings<lb />
together the finest<lb />
amateur athletes in the<lb />
country.<lb />
Edwards noted that<lb />
the 1980 U.S. Olympic-<lb />
hoc key team was<lb />
chosen from the<lb />
athletes participating at<lb />
the 1979 festival.<lb />
"This is a very<lb />
