The Army recruiting<lb />
malpractice scandal has<lb />
shifted to the Raleigh<lb />
District where 11 re-<lb />

suspended from duty this<lb />

recruiting fraud investig-<lb />

"The Army officials<lb />

The Army began its<lb />
recruiting scandal probe in<lb />
Charlotte last May. So far,<lb />
182 recruiters have been<lb />
relieved of duty nation-<lb />
wide, including 32 in the<lb />
Charlotte district.<lb />

Work on the new<lb />
paved parking lots is going<lb />
"right according to sch-<lb />
edule says James<lb />
Lowry, director of Plant<lb />
Operations at ECU.<lb />
Work is scheduled to<lb />
be completed about Dec-<lb />
ember 14.<lb />
The paving of the<lb />
parking lots has been a<lb />
itroversial topic, espec-<lb />
ially between the faculty<lb />
and staff of the university<lb />
local nature enthus-<lb />
Many students<lb />
objected to the paving of<lb />
the parking lots because<lb />
trees would have to be<lb />
removed from the areas.<lb />
A compromise was<lb />
reached, and work began<lb />
earlier in the semester.<lb />
The dirt lots caused<lb />
difficulties for students<lb />
who had to use them, ac<lb />
mud was a major problem<lb />
when it rained.<lb />
The construction costs<lb />
are expected to run about<lb />
$230,000. All of the lots<lb />
are expected to be paved<lb />
at the same time.<lb />
At present the lots are<lb />
in use in order to pack<lb />
down the gravel and dirt<lb />
to make paving easier.<lb />
Charges leveled<lb />
against the recruiters who<lb />
have been relieved of their<lb />
duty include coaching<lb />
enlistees on the Army<lb />
entrance examination and<lb />
Army recruiters and 15<lb />
Army Reserve recruiters in<lb />
the Raleigh District, which<lb />
includes 48 Eastern North<lb />
Carolina counties.<lb />
The Army has pressed<lb />
charges only in the<lb />
Charlotte district where<lb />
nine soldiers face court<lb />
martial and four others<lb />
face administrative<lb />
charges.<lb />
A military court-martial<lb />
had been scheduled to<lb />
begin Thursday at Fort<lb />
Bragg for Sgt. 1st Class<lb />
Marshall B. Jackson, the<lb />
first of the Charlotte area<lb />
recruiters to go before a<lb />
trial board. The Army said<lb />
today, however, that Jack-<lb />
son's hearing was post-<lb />
poned. No reason was<lb />
given for the delay, nor<lb />
was a new date an-<lb />
nounced.<lb />
A lawyer for some of<lb />
the suspended recruiters<lb />
said Monday that two<lb />
more officers and three<lb />
non-commissioned officers,<lb />
four of them in the<lb />
Charlotte district, will be<lb />
charged with recruiting<lb />
abuses by recruiters<lb />
already implicated.<lb />
Meanwhile, an Army<lb />
spokesman Tuesday con-<lb />
firmed that North Car-<lb />
olinian Maj. Gen. Maxwell<lb />
Reid Thurman has been<lb />
chosen to head the Army's<lb />
Recruiting Command. Of-<lb />
ficial announcement of<lb />
Thurman's appointment is<lb />
expected Friday.<lb />
Thurman, 48, a High<lb />
Point native, succeeds<lb />
Maj. Gen. William Mun-<lb />

Mundie has been the<lb />
subject of criticism from<lb />
Sen. Robert Morgan, D-<lb />
N.C for his handling of a<lb />
malpractice investigation<lb />
in Raleigh late last year.<lb />
Then the current scandal<lb />
surfaced in Charlotte in<lb />
May of this year.<lb />
Mundie announced in<lb />

Beer policy discussed<lb />
A subcommittee of the<lb />
Campus Solicitation Com-<lb />
mittee met on Tuesday to<lb />
discuss changes in ECU's<lb />
beer consumption policy.<lb />
In their meeting, the<lb />
committee chose to make<lb />
several suggestions, ac-<lb />
cord in gtoCharles Sune,<lb />
president of the Student<lb />
Union.<lb />
The first suggestion<lb />
was to allow brown<lb />
bagging of beer in the<lb />
Mendenhall Student Cen-<lb />
ter. This suggestion would<lb />
only apply to recognized<lb />
organizations of the uni-<lb />
PARROT<lb />
continued from page 1<lb />
another enigma on the<lb />
ECU campus. Willie is<lb />
most famous for his<lb />
destruction of the Citadel's<lb />
flag at the Homecoming<lb />
game.<lb />
Coggins swears that<lb />
the destruction of the flag<lb />
was not planned, and he<lb />
commented, "Willie's a<lb />
dedicated ECU fan<lb />
According to Coggins,<lb />
Willie required very little<lb />
training. "He's just a<lb />
smart dog<lb />
Willie most recently<lb />
appeared at Lamba Chi<lb />
Field Day, and has been<lb />
invited to attend the<lb />
Second Annual Greenville<lb />
Tobacco Festival to be<lb />
held the first week in<lb />
November.<lb />
Willie is also well<lb />
dressed, since area or-<lb />
ganizations donate t-shirts<lb />
to Willie's wardrobe to<lb />
promote their organiza-<lb />
tions.<lb />
The parrot is presently<lb />
restricted to what it can do<lb />
while on the field. He has<lb />
been requested to sit near<lb />
the band during games or<lb />
to sit on the Pirate ship.<lb />
However, Coggins readily<lb />
admits that it is unlikely<lb />
he will be able to stay put<lb />
for very long.<lb />
Coggins asked that any<lb />
student who has sugges-<lb />
tions for routines for the<lb />
parrot, or for Willie, to<lb />
please suggest them to<lb />
him.<lb />
Coggins plans to attend<lb />
the upcoming UNC-Chapel<lb />
Hill-ECU game to cheer<lb />
for the team.<lb />
But Coggins commen-<lb />
ted, "When you walk out<lb />
on that field and you hear<lb />
those people applaud, it's<lb />
a great feeling<lb />
versity who notify the<lb />
center at least one week in<lb />
advance of their plans.<lb />
They also plan to<lb />
suggest brown bagging of<lb />
beer be allowed on the<lb />
mall again by recognized<lb />
organizations with a one<lb />
week advance notice to the<lb />
university. This also in-<lb />
cludes the field at the<lb />
bottom of College Hill<lb />
Drive, Wright Auditorium,<lb />
the Ledonia Wright Afro-<lb />
American Cultural Center<lb />
and the amphitheatre be-<lb />
hind Fletcher Dorm.<lb />
In the past, permission<lb />
for consumption of alco-<lb />
holic beverages in these<lb />
areas had to come directly<lb />
from the chancellor's of-<lb />
fice, according to Sune.<lb />
These are only sugges-<lb />
tions to the solicitation<lb />
committee, not final<lb />
changes. Changes must<lb />
first go through the board<lb />
of trustees before be-<lb />
coming operational.<lb />
HEARING<lb />
continued from page 1<lb />
before the committee to<lb />
give his version of the<lb />
incident. He told the<lb />
committee that he thought<lb />
he was a scapegoat victim<lb />
of circumstances, but ad-<lb />
mitted that he was travel-<lb />
ing 5 miles over the 25<lb />
mph speed limit on Fifth<lb />
Street. Folsom added that<lb />
the bus in question could<lb />
not make it up the hill on<lb />
Fifth Street unless it was<lb />
going 30 mph or more and<lb />
said that he was not<lb />
following the car ahead too<lb />
closely.<lb />
The committee then<lb />
debated what action to<lb />
take in the matter. Half of<lb />
the six-member committee<lb />
thought initially that no<lb />
action should be taken<lb />
against Folsom.<lb />
Further debate resulted<lb />
in the decision by Operat-<lb />
ing Manager Leonard<lb />
Fleming to issue Folsom a<lb />
written reprimand for<lb />
speeding. According to<lb />
Fleming, another charge<lb />
ofl speeding against Fol-<lb />
som would be grounds for<lb />
his dismissal from the<lb />
driver pool.<lb />
The committee simul-<lb />
taneously decided to begin<lb />
retraining all bus drivers,<lb />
since it Appeared that<lb />
incautious driving was a<lb />
general problem among<lb />
them.<lb />
Fleming said Wednes-<lb />
day that a timetable for<lb />
the retraining program is<lb />
forthcoming.<lb />
Members of the ad-<lb />
visory committee were Ed<lb />
Waiters, Colleen Flynn,<lb />
Jesse High, SGA Presi-<lb />
dent Brett Melvin, Chubby<lb />

The East Carolinian<lb />
nian ' I <lb />
editorials<lb />
& Opinions<lb />
Thursday, October 25, 1979 Page 4<lb />
Greenville, N. C.<lb />
Marlin Perkins:<lb />
where are you?<lb />
The editorial board of The East<lb />
Carolinian has noticed the existence of<lb />
several endangered species on campus,<lb />
and we felt it our responsibility as<lb />
working journalists to let the students<lb />
know exactly what is going on.<lb />
Unfortunately, we could not get an<lb />
interview with any members of these<lb />
species, as they are inanimate objects.<lb />
We can, however, identify the<lb />
predator. Like hunters and hydroelectric<lb />
projects, SGA buses are responsible for<lb />
making several species scarce. Several<lb />
victimized groups have been seen late<lb />
at night talking about their adventures,<lb />
and the pervading fear in the university<lb />
community. Despite frequent pleas from<lb />
the working press, as well as local<lb />
environmentalists, the buses continue<lb />
their rampage unchecked. The en-<lb />
dangered few huddle in garages and<lb />
near curbs, hoping that a bus will pass<lb />
without incident.<lb />
We have heard that the following<lb />
species are endangered at East Carolina<lb />
University:<lb />
Volkswagens (germanus beetlebug).<lb />
This small, lovable creature, which<lb />
originally comes from Germany, cer-<lb />
tainly does not pose any threat to an<lb />
SGA bus, which outweighs it by<lb />
approximately seven tons. Without<lb />
warning, the SGA buses have been<lb />
known to leap across entire inter-<lb />
sections in a single bound (like the<lb />
campus police jump on unregistered<lb />
vehicles).<lb />
State owned vehicles (bureaucratis<lb />
daytrip automobileus). This creature,<lb />
despite its great numbers and total lack<lb />
of movement, actually runs little risk of<lb />
becoming an endangered species.<lb />
However when feeding at a gasoline<lb />
pump, the brown Belchfire-8 runs the<lb />
risk of being backed into by an SGA<lb />
JACK ANDERSON &JOE SPEAR<lb />
bathroomus).<lb />
its outward<lb />
active social<lb />
passive and<lb />
bus a surprise tactic which usually<lb />
works.<lb />
Fire hydrants (canine<lb />
This creature, despite<lb />
appearance of being an<lb />
climber, is really very<lb />
quiet. It shakes and trembles whenever<lb />
it sees an SGA bus approaching, as well<lb />
it should. Its feet are sunk in concrete,<lb />
and its rear end is a water main, which<lb />
unfortunately do not make possible a<lb />
quick getaway.<lb />
Trees (droppitus leavus). This creature<lb />
is the only one who has had a chance of<lb />
defending itself against a bus. In a<lb />
recent foray, for the first time, the<lb />
vulnerable front end of the bus was<lb />
shattered by a hard left hook from a big<lb />
one, allegedly an elm, who had taken<lb />
karate training while serving as a<lb />
hospital-tent pole in Korea. Unfor-<lb />
tunately, droppitus leavus children have<lb />

WEEKLY SPECIAL<lb />
By Jack Anderson<lb />
and Joe Spear<lb />
WASHINGTON The<lb />
Bermuda Triangle is a phe-<lb />
nomenon! that mystifies<lb />
many scientists unable to<lb />
explain the high rate of air<lb />
navigation disasters occur-<lb />
ring there. But even more<lb />
puzzling is the Bahama Tri-<lb />
angle that runs from fugi-<lb />
tive crooked financier, Rob-<lb />
ert Vesco, to an oil-rich<lb />
Arab dictator, Libya's<lb />
Muammar Qaddafi, and<lb />
thence to the doorstep of<lb />
Jimmy Carter's White<lb />
House.<lb />
Vesco, a Wall Street buck-<lb />
etshop operator, did a moon-<lb />
light flit from this country<lb />
to find refuge in the Carib-<lb />
bean from federal charges<lb />
of fiduciary finagling. He<lb />
took with him millions of<lb />
dollars bilked out of inves-<lb />
tors and escaped extradition<lb />
efforts by the U.S. govern-<lb />
ment. We have evidence that<lb />
Vesco is luxuriating at a<lb />
tropical hideaway in the<lb />
Bahamas.<lb />
From Vesco, the next line<lb />
of the triangle runs to<lb />
Qaddafi, the fanatic Libyan<lb />
strongman who is using his<lb />
country's OPEC oil as a<lb />
whip to promote his obses-<lb />
sive Arab" nationalistic<lb />
dreams. Qaddafi channels<lb />
his petrobuck millions into<lb />
terrorist groups around the<lb />
world, surreptitiously seeks<lb />
to obtain nuclear weapon<lb />
cipability for the Islamic<lb />
cause and is relentless in<lb />
advocating a war to the<lb />
death against Israel.<lb />
His Arab neighbors are<lb />
chary about setting off the<lb />
dynamite keg of war in the<lb />
Middle East, so the hawk-<lb />
like Qaddafi is resorting to<lb />
Bahama Triangle Includes<lb />
Vesco, Qaddafi and Billy<lb />
economic warfare to bring<lb />
the Jewish state and its<lb />
allies to their knees.<lb />
We've learned from a<lb />
secret intelligence report<lb />
that Vesco and Qaddafi have<lb />
had an unholy alliance since<lb />
the early 1970s to help the<lb />
Libyan dictator's economic<lb />
warfare. Both found com-<lb />
mon cause in their animosi-<lb />
ty to the United States<lb />
government.<lb />
Vesco, the report relates,<lb />
has provided financial<lb />
advice to the Libyan leader<lb />
on how to manipulate oil<lb />
production and prices in<lb />
ways that will keep the<lb />
American dollar hostage to<lb />
Qaddafi demands.<lb />
Sources from the intelli-<lb />
gence community tell us<lb />
that Qaddafi is driving the<lb />
dollar down by using his oil<lb />
wealth to buy gold. Libya<lb />
was the first OPEC govern-<lb />
ment to announce it was<lb />
raising the price on its sore-<lb />
ly needed petroleum. This<lb />
threatens to set off another<lb />
.disastrous round of OPEC<lb />
oil hikes for the free world.<lb />
From the canny financial<lb />
schemer Vesco and the<lb />
fierce Arab leader Qaddafi,<lb />
the triangle leads to two of<lb />
Carter's most intimate asso-<lb />
ciates - Brother Billy, and<lb />
White House chief of staff,<lb />
Hamilton Jordan.<lb />
Billy Carter has become<lb />
so closely involved with the<lb />
Libyans that he could be<lb />
considered a kissing cousin.<lb />
A federal grand jury in New<lb />
York is looking into his ties<lb />
with both Qaddafi and Vesco<lb />
on a warpiane deal.<lb />
A Vesco move to reach<lb />
Carter's ear and end<lb />
Washington's extradition<lb />
proceedings against the con-<lb />
victed swindler was aimed<lb />
at Jordan's inner sanctum. A<lb />
Jordan subordinate listened<lb />
to a Vesco emissary who had<lb />
been offered a million dollar<lb />
commission to get the<lb />
Carter administration to<lb />
lower the heat. Another fed-<lb />
eral grand jury is looking<lb />
into this.<lb />
"Legitimate" Crime:<lb />
More and more law-abiding<lb />

Even though John Q. Citizen<lb />

A classified report from<lb />

The report gives this stark<lb />
picture: "Organized crime<lb />

wide variety of businesses<lb />
that encompass almost eve-<lb />

a wide variety of basic data<lb />
on illicit drug traffickers<lb />
identified at least 500 busi-<lb />

partially owned by orga-<lb />

The underworld's Fortune<lb />
500 list doesn't consist of<lb />
corner speakeasies or bookie<lb />
joints. The DEA has found<lb />
the heirs of Al Capone own-<lb />

insurance companies and<lb />
real estate ventures. Their<lb />
secret domain extends to<lb />
trucking companies, con-<lb />

auto repair shops.<lb />
The Mafia's portfolio also<lb />
includes bars, clubs, cafes<lb />
and restaurants; retail<lb />
stores and service indus-<lb />

labor union interests.<lb />
With the muscle of the<lb />

Reader defends 'show'<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
As I turned through<lb />
the pages of Tuesday's<lb />
issue of the East Caro-<lb />
linian I came across an<lb />
article concerning a Greek<lb />
Fraternity Block Show in<lb />
which my fraternity per-<lb />
formed and I myself had<lb />
participated in. The article<lb />
contained criticism that<lb />
would have normally pro-<lb />
ducted immediate anger<lb />
and resentment but due to<lb />
the writer's appearent dull<lb />
knowledge of Black Greek<lb />
Fraternities I found it<lb />
quite amusing.<lb />
Later I found out that<lb />
the writer of the article<lb />
was a member of another<lb />
Black Fraternity on cam-<lb />
pus. This did not amuse<lb />
me. He himself had<lb />
participated in Block<lb />
Shows but not of such<lb />
outstanding quality. His<lb />
fraternity by chance hap-<lb />
pen to be the first Black<lb />
Fraternity to establish a<lb />
charter on this campus<lb />
and the first to perform a<lb />
block show this semister.<lb />
I'm sure that his article<lb />
did not represent the<lb />
collective opinion or efforts<lb />
of his fraternity. Being a<lb />
foreign student he ex-<lb />
pressed the views of "At<lb />
least the way it look from<lb />
here" himself.<lb />
This rebuttal is not<lb />
to discredit the writer's<lb />
personal opinion because<lb />
we all have one, but to<lb />
explain to him and others<lb />
what members of Black<lb />
Fraternities have tried to<lb />
explain for the last five<lb />
years.<lb />
The<lb />

Block Shows have been<lb />
an activity of Black<lb />
fraternities as early as<lb />
1920. They are designed to<lb />
coincide with the stereo-<lb />
types and trademarks<lb />
gathered by individual<lb />
fraternities throughout the<lb />
years. They serve as<lb />
entertainment, attraction<lb />
mechanisms for potential<lb />
pleadges, and a means of<lb />
Fraternity competition.<lb />
The most important<lb />
thing that should be said<lb />
is that Block shows are<lb />
just that "Shows They<lb />
do a very poor job at<lb />
projecting the personalities<lb />
or ideas of the individuals<lb />
that perform them and this<lb />
should be taken into<lb />
consideration. The Three<lb />
Black Fraternities on this<lb />
campus are comprised of<lb />
very fine young men who<lb />
have beyond any doubt<lb />
contributed their share to<lb />
promoting social and ser-<lb />
vice activities on this<lb />
campus and the sur-<lb />
rounding community.<lb />

WASHINGTON (AP)<lb />
A federal official who<lb />
played a key role in the<lb />
government's desegrega-<lb />
tion battle with the<lb />
University of North Car-<lb />
olina has resigned.<lb />
David S. Tatel of the<lb />
Health, Education and<lb />
Welfare's Office for Civil<lb />
Rights since 1977, re-<lb />
signed to return to private<lb />
law practice. His resign-<lb />
ation is effective Oct. 31.<lb />
Tatel said earlier this<lb />
year he would leave the<lb />
federal agency. And he<lb />
said Monday he was hot<lb />
resigning because of a<lb />
publicized rebuke from<lb />
HEW Secretary Patricia R.<lb />
Harris, who reportedly<lb />
called Tatel politically<lb />
insensitive.<lb />
Concerning the UNC<lb />
HEW dispute, Tatel told<lb />
The News and Observer of<lb />
Raleigh that he did not<lb />
believe further desegreg-<lb />
ation of the state's 16<lb />
campus system could be<lb />
achieved without elimin-<lb />
ation of some of the<lb />
duplicate programs at<lb />
nearby predominantly<lb />
white and predominantly<lb />
black schools.<lb />
"You need something<lb />
affirmative, something<lb />
positive to dismantle the<lb />
dual system. And the<lb />
heart of the dual system is<lb />
identical programs for<lb />
blacks and whites. That's<lb />
true aM over the South<lb />
Tatel said.<lb />
Program duplication<lb />
has been the main sticking<lb />
point in the negotiations.<lb />
When university officials<lb />
rejected HEW's call for<lb />
elimination of the similar<lb />
programs on nearby cam-<lb />
puses, the negotiations<lb />
broke down and HEW<lb />
began administrative pro-<lb />
ceedings to cut off por-<lb />
tions of the near $90<lb />
million the university<lb />
system receives annually<lb />
in federal funds.<lb />
Tatel said he believed<lb />
the dispute could be<lb />
settled through negotia-<lb />
tions rather than in court.<lb />
His successor has not<lb />
been named.<lb />
The procedures for getting an SGA<lb />
loan have changed, according to a<lb />
memorandum from Elmer E. Meyer, vice<lb />
chancellor for student life, to Joy Clark,<lb />
student fund accounting manager.<lb />
Effective immediately, SGA loan<lb />
applications will be available from both<lb />
the Student Fund Accounting office and<lb />
the office of Student Financial Aid.<lb />
Also loans can now be approved by<lb />
either the SGA president (currently Brett<lb />
Melvin) or the SGA secretary.<lb />
In the past, students had to go to<lb />
Whichard building to get signatures for<lb />
loan applications and then return to the<lb />
student center.<lb />
Also according to the memo, Melvin<lb />
will be developing an information sheet<lb />
which will explain such things as the<lb />
amount of the loan, the eligibility<lb />
requirements, terms of repayment and<lb />
enforcement procedures.<lb />
At the present time, there is no extra<lb />
charge for the loans; that is if the student<lb />
pays back the same amount that he or she<lb />
borrows.<lb />
However, Melvin has brought the idea<lb />
of charging $1 for each of the loans before<lb />
the SGA so that the student government<lb />
could regain some of the money it loses<lb />
each year through default.<lb />
The matter of a service charge on the<lb />
loans is expected to come up again at a<lb />
later SGA legislative meeting.<lb />

Flu shots will be<lb />
available for students in<lb />
the ECU Infirmary, before<lb />
the upcoming flu season,<lb />
according to Kay Van-<lb />
Nortwick, administrative<lb />
assistant to the infirmary.<lb />
A small fee will be<lb />
charged for the shots.<lb />
VanNortwick stressed<lb />
the fact that students who<lb />
have chronic ailments,<lb />
such as asthma, diabetes,<lb />
chronic bronchitis, emphe-<lb />
sema and heart disease<lb />
and also paralytics (per-<lb />
sons who use wheelchairs)<lb />
should get the shots as<lb />
soon as possible.<lb />
The shots are available<lb />
from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.<lb />
daily except Saturday and<lb />
Sunday.<lb />
People under the age<lb />
of 26 will have to have a<lb />
back-up shot about one<lb />
month after the first<lb />
in order for it to be<lb />
effecitve.<lb />
People over the age of<lb />
26 will only require one<lb />
shot, and those who had<lb />
the shot last year will need<lb />
a booster this year.<lb />
Students beyond 26<lb />
years of age and those<lb />
who require boosters- will<lb />
be charged $1.50 for the<lb />
shot. Students under the<lb />
age of 26 will pay $2.50.<lb />
Normally, January and<lb />
February are the months<lb />
when most students get<lb />
the flu, according to<lb />
VanNortwick, but getting<lb />
the ihots early helps to<lb />
prevent having the illness<lb />
in the early months of the<lb />
year.<lb />
Students are strongly<lb />

Rick James is one of the most intense<lb />
forces in Black music and is beginning to<lb />
manifest an even stronger impetus in all<lb />
popular music. He and George Clinton<lb />
live out their fantasy world through their City 'The city high in your mind<lb />
music. Musically, Fire It Up is a vibrant<lb />
Moreover, the create an idyllic world endeavor ranging from hard driving funk<lb />
force of Fire It Up, and indeed all of funk,<lb />
is to liberate oneself from this limiting<lb />
environment. Rick James' last album was<lb />
Busting Out Of L Seven. To break out of<lb />
"L Seven" is to cease to be "a square, a<lb />
roid in a closed box Only if you bust out<lb />
of L Seven can you proceed to reach Stone<lb />

times. Each is a platinum recording artist;<lb />
they have sold two million or more of one<lb />

Rick James is the driving force of punk<lb />
funk. "What in the world is punk funk?"<lb />
some may ponder. "This punk is bad<lb />
to mellow, sophisticated ballads. An<lb />
impressive facet of this album is Rick<lb />
James' ability to shift easily from the<lb />
slow-tempo love music to frenetic dance<lb />
ditties that will drive you to the stainless<lb />
steel floor. The horn arrangements on this<lb />
album are excellent, at times breaking<lb />
enough, but what's this punk funk jive?" into solos that have a distinct jazz flavor,<lb />
Punk funk is "To be one with yourself; To and the strings support the gentle<lb />

Admission is 50 cents.<lb />
His music has been<lb />
described as a cross<lb />
between Jethro Tull and<lb />
Jackson Browne. Perform-<lb />

repertoire, Leopold has<lb />
toured extensively in the<lb />
U.S opening for acts<lb />
such as Supertramp, Janis<lb />
Ian, Daryl Hall and John<lb />
Oates, Cheech 'n' Chong,<lb />
Firefall, The Outlaws,<lb />
Jerry Garcia, The Nitty<lb />

aries with its powerful appeal and drive, of goodtime party music with such deeply<lb />
This album is for 'Roids: All y'all, personal statements, but perhaps it is an<lb />
attribute not uncommon in Black music.<lb />
The concepts behind James' music are<lb />
deeply rooted in black consciousness, and<lb />
therein lies its appeal to all individuals<lb />
concerned with these ideals.<lb />
Rick James is the supreme being in his<lb />
fantasy world presented in Fire It Up in<lb />
that he handles the major tasks in the<lb />
presentation of the album. James writes<lb />
all the music, renders the superb<lb />
arrangements, and manages the produc-<lb />
tion chores on Fire It Up. Would you let<lb />
anybody funk with your fantasy?<lb />
Once again, one of the major trends of<lb />
the seventies is a flight from the harsh<lb />
reality of an increasingly complex<lb />
environment through various methods of<lb />
fantasy. Rick James attempts to free<lb />
individuals from their restrictive in-<lb />
fluences and allow them to visit his<lb />
fantasy world of Stone City, and the gift<lb />
of love that is his can become yours, too.<lb />
As Rick says:<lb />

Humor<lb />
Good morning, you groggy-eyed creatures.<lb />
I'm working on the assumption that all of vou have<lb />
mothers who have told you a thousand times to get<lb />
plenty of rest. The training of our formative years<lb />
supposed to remain with us. My only question, then, is<lb />
why the hell do college students make a habit of pulling<lb />
all-nighters?<lb />
Admittedly, I'm one of the worst offenders of the<lb />
"early to bed" rule T have a terrible habit of finding<lb />
myself hunched over the books at ungodly hours of the<lb />
morning, and even though I hate myself for it. I'm<lb />
continually repeating the process.<lb />
What process, you may ask.<lb />
Aw, come on. The system by which we all put things<lb />
off until we realize at midnight before a mid-term that<lb />
hey, there are only eight more study hours until the big<lb />
moment. So, we always find ourselves pulling out the<lb />
musty texts at the witching hour, with the adrenalin of<lb />
pure panic pushing us onward.<lb />
Frankly, I'm getting sick and tired of greeting 4:00<lb />
and 5:00 in the morning with coffee cup and highlighter<lb />
in hand. I begin to value the beauty of uninterrupted<lb />
sleep at moments like that and tend to lose sight of my<lb />
studies.<lb />
The other day 1 decided to get entirely caught up so I<lb />
wouldn't have to pull any more all-nighters. After losing<lb />
two nights of sleep trying to catch up. 1 gave up and<lb />
resigned myself to the'fact that 1 will be welcoming the<lb />
dawn before every test of this semester.<lb />
I would really like to meet the genius who invented<lb />
No-Doze. The man must be a millionaire by now who<lb />
can probably sleep all day if he so chooses. I like to<lb />
visualize him as an apathetic college student, much like<lb />
mvself, who many years ago got tired of guzzling coffee<lb />
to'stav awake while studying for finals. I see him at 3:00<lb />
a.m mind wandering from Darwin's theory<lb />
evolution, thinking, "There's got to be a better way<lb />
I mean, if vou think about it, you lose an awful lot of<lb />
time tracking 'back and forth to the bathroom, relieving<lb />
vourself of vour liquid eye opener. So I see this guv<lb />
thinking, "Eureka! I'll put caffeine in a pill He drop<lb />
out of school, makes and markets his pill and sleeps<lb />
soundly all the way to the bank. I really hate that guy. If<lb />
he'd given me time, could have thought of putting<lb />
caffeine in a pill.<lb />
And hey guys, what would the vast majority of us do<lb />
if we didn't have cigarettes to keep us company? 1 d<lb />
lose my mind without them. I did, in fact, try to pull an<lb />
all-nighter without cigarettes once. I craved a shot of<lb />
nicotine all night and ended up flunking a test due to<lb />
lack of concentration. The pack I bought and smoked<lb />
after the test made me feel much better though.<lb />
I think one of my fondest memories of my college<lb />
years will be that of myself nodding off over a pile of<lb />
books at 6:00 a.m. with my mouth tasting like a dust<lb />
bowl. Yes, I'll remember the over-flowing, still<lb />
smoldering ashtray and the coffee cup, half-filled with<lb />
stone-cold liquid and, of course, the over-turned<lb />
bottle of No-Doze.<lb />
I'll never forget those precious moments when I<lb />
confronted my professors with blood-shot eyes and<lb />
apologized profusely for falling asleep in mid-lecture;<lb />
nor will I forget the after-test sessions with professors<lb />
who couldn't decipher my shakey handwriting. Yes, I<lb />
have a lot of great memories of dozing off during<lb />
post-final parties and sleeping Christmas break away.<lb />
Because of my years at ECU, I think I've learned<lb />
how wonderful going to bed at a decent hour really is,<lb />
and when I graduate, I may try it for a while.<lb />

'Rocket' Hinson sprints to victory at race<lb />

Sunday's warm temp-<lb />
eratures brought bicycle<lb />
racers from several states<lb />
to compete in the 4th<lb />
Annual Greenville Criteri-<lb />
um.<lb />
The event was or-<lb />
ganized and sanctioned in<lb />
a scant iwo weeks by the<lb />
East Carolina Road Club,<lb />
in an effort to have the<lb />
race for the fourth con-<lb />
secutive year. Prizes and<lb />
cash donated by numerous<lb />
Greenville merchants drew<lb />
riders from Virginia, South<lb />
Carolina and Georgia to<lb />
compete in the 40-mile<lb />
Senior I and II race. The<lb />
one-half mile race course<lb />
on 1st, Reade, 2nd and<lb />
Washington Streets pre-<lb />
sented a test of handling<lb />
and strength, accelerating<lb />
at 320 corners in the<lb />
course of the race.<lb />
Many riders held the<lb />
lead at various points,<lb />
including Boyd Fusic<lb />
(CVC), Mike Throop<lb />
(Team Toyo), Pat Day<lb />
(CVC), and Jack Lassiter<lb />
(James River Schwinn),<lb />
but the man who took the<lb />
lead when it mattered<lb />
most was Ronnie "The<lb />
Rocket" Hinson, of Ral-<lb />
eigh (CVC).<lb />
Hinson rode away from<lb />
the field early in the race<lb />
and led by as much as 20<lb />
seconds at one time. He<lb />
looked sure to lap the pack<lb />
on the half-mile course.<lb />
The heat cut him short,<lb />
however, and he drifted<lb />
back into the group by the<lb />
halfway point.<lb />
He collected several<lb />
prizes for being the leader<lb />
in given laps.<lb />
From past experience,<lb />
Hinson knew that he<lb />
almost certainly had the<lb />
best sprint of the field.<lb />
Even though the other<lb />
riders were fully aware of<lb />
Hinson's spring, there was<lb />
nothing they could do<lb />
about it in the last lap.<lb />
Hinson roared out of<lb />
the last corner into the<lb />
lead a couple of seconds<lb />
before teammate Pat Day<lb />
reached the line, arms<lb />
lifted high and face full of<lb />
exhaustion. Boyd Fusic of<lb />
Raleigh took third.<lb />
Hinson has been used<lb />
to winning races since he<lb />
was 15, usually racing in a<lb />
category above his own.<lb />
He was the North Carolina<lb />
State Road Champion in<lb />
1978 and is one of the ten<lb />
racers in the area who<lb />
carry a Senior I license.<lb />
Besides being an ex-<lb />
cellent athlete, Hinson is<lb />
one of the best racers a<lb />
sponsor could have. He<lb />
never forgets to thank<lb />
sponsors, promoters and<lb />
even the crowd for having<lb />
a race.<lb />
Hinson presently rides<lb />
a graphite fiber and<lb />
aluminum bicycle manu-<lb />
factured by the Exxon<lb />
Chemical Corporation. As<lb />
with most racing bikes<lb />
today, the bicycle is<lb />
equipped with Campag-<lb />
nolo super Record com-<lb />
ponents, including several<lb />
parts made of titanium.<lb />
The 12-speed bike weighs<lb />
about 18 lbs. and is worth<lb />
over $1,500.<lb />
The possibility of land-<lb />
ing a spot on the United<lb />
States Olympic Road Team<lb />
is not out of range for<lb />
Hinson, who has another<lb />
year to go at North<lb />
Carolina State before<lb />
graduation. To be com-<lb />
petitive in the Olympic<lb />
trials, a racer must do a<lb />
minimum of 20 to 30 hours<lb />
a week of riding or 2000 to<lb />
3000 miles a month.<lb />
Unlike most athletes,<lb />
bicycle racers physically<lb />
peak in their mid-to-late<lb />
twenties, being able to<lb />
take more stress and push<lb />
hard for longer times as<lb />
they accumulate milage<lb />
over the years. At 21,<lb />
Hinson has nowhere to go<lb />
but up.<lb />

Coming from another di-<lb />

Allen's tribute to Ing-<lb />

Allen's study in<lb />
"beiges and earth tones"<lb />
is the ultimate midcult<lb />
American movie of the<lb />
seventies; it shares all of<lb />
the pluses of that bour-<lb />

Fifteen years ago,<lb />
when the reigning Ameri-<lb />

Philistine, Interiors<lb />
wouldn't have been given<lb />
a second thought by most<lb />
critics, who might have<lb />
dismissed it out of hand as<lb />
some "egghead" non-<lb />

the dominant cultural sen-<lb />

level, Interiors is a<lb />
masterpiece.<lb />
It is clearly well made.<lb />
The colors used in the film<lb />
are very effective shades<lb />
of muted browns, tans and<lb />
grays, and the cinema-<lb />

throughout.<lb />
As far as subject<lb />
matter is concerned, "ser-<lb />

inappropriate appellation.<lb />
The tenuous possibility<lb />
exists that Interiors was<lb />
meant as a grand burles-<lb />
que, a parody of cosmic<lb />
proportions. Even if Allen<lb />
didn't mean it as such,<lb />
this remains one of the<lb />
many ways that audiences<lb />
can view the film. Who<lb />
knows? In twenty years<lb />
Interiors may well be<lb />
regarded as ultra-camp.<lb />
One way or the other, the<lb />
film warrants its attention.<lb />
our time.<lb />
In some strange way,<lb />
Woody Allen's own opera-<lb />
tion as a performer is<lb />
Kafkaesque he accepts<lb />
the gross dangers of the<lb />
world with a terrified<lb />
innocence disguised as<lb />
comic equanimity.<lb />
One of his funniest<lb />
club routines is an account<lb />
of his inidvertent abduc-<lb />
tion by th s Ku Klux Klan<lb />
(Allen says he recognized<lb />
the Grand Dragon because<lb />
"he was the one wearing<lb />
the contoured sheet"). As<lb />
the Klansmen are about to<lb />
hang this Yankee Jewish<lb />
interloper, his life passes<lb />

himself as best director,<lb />
for Allen and co-writer<lb />
Marshall Brickman as best<lb />

for Diane Keaton as best<lb />

doubt one of the most<lb />
successful funny-men of<lb />
before his eyes. "I saw<lb />

being an urban Jew.<lb />
He is greatly fond of<lb />
his parents, who had to<lb />
scramble in various busi-<lb />
nesses during the Depres-<lb />
sion and are now retired.<lb />
He hated school and was<lb />
kicked out of New York<lb />
University and the City<lb />
College of New York and<lb />
knew that hurt his par-<lb />
ents. His way of handling<lb />
this was to say: "My<lb />
mother is a sensitive<lb />
woman. When I was<lb />
thrown out of college she<lb />
locked herself in the<lb />
bathroom and took an<lb />
overdose of mah-jongg<lb />
tiles<lb />
Whatever the real<lb />
cause of the depressions<lb />
and visions of death that<lb />
beset him as a kid he can<lb />
still joke about the whole<lb />
thing: "I was in analysis<lb />
for years because of a<lb />
traumatic childhood. I was<lb />
breast-fed through fals-<lb />
ies<lb />
Allen has been in<lb />
analysis for more than half<lb />
his life. More than analy-<lb />
sis, it's been the women in<lb />
his life that have most<lb />
helped to form him. He<lb />
married his first wife,<lb />
Harlene, when both were<lb />
teen-agers. His second<lb />
wife, Louise Lasser, who<lb />
had appeared in some of<lb />
his films, went on to<lb />
become the celebrated<lb />
"Mary Hartman Allen<lb />
says that "She's one of<lb />
the brightest, wittiest<lb />
women I've ever known<lb />
Of course, the most<lb />
important woman in his<lb />
life has been actress Diane<lb />
Keaton. Keaton came into<lb />
her own with her perfor-<lb />
mance (based on her own<lb />
character) in Allen's Annie<lb />
Hall and in Richard<lb />
Brook's Looking for Mr.<lb />
Goodbar.<lb />
Keaton has influenced<lb />
Allen on a more personal<lb />
level. Allen agrees with<lb />
Camus that women are all<lb />
we know of paradise on<lb />
earth. Like most modern<lb />
artists, he finds art itself<lb />
an embarrassment: "Art is<lb />
the intellectual's Catholi-<lb />
cism. It's the promise of<lb />
an afterlife. Of course it's<lb />
all fake<lb />
Discussing Interiors,<lb />
Allen says "When you do<lb />
comedy, you're not sitting<lb />
at the grownups' table,<lb />
you're sitting at the<lb />
children's table Allen<lb />
has the guts to get up and<lb />
sit at the grownups' table.<lb />
"It deals he says, "with<lb />
the spiritual turmoil, the<lb />
floating unrest that can<lb />
only be traceable to the<lb />
bad choices in life. Also<lb />
the apotheosis of the artist<lb />
beyond his real worth.<lb />
And how a lover can<lb />
possess the loved one as<lb />
an object he can control<lb />
But Allen's first tra-<lb />
gedy is inevitably still an<lb />
Allen movie. He is des-<lb />
perately afraid of being<lb />
pretentious or banal.<lb />
While making Interiors, he<lb />
watched a lot of soap<lb />
operas on television, to<lb />
make sure he wasn't doing<lb />
"As the World Turns"<lb />
without knowing it.<lb />
If Allen jumped off a<lb />
cliff in search of himself<lb />
with Interiors, he finally<lb />
and definitively found<lb />
himself with his latest<lb />
film, a bittersweet love<lb />
story and comedy, Man-<lb />
hattan.<lb />
Certainly the drive for<lb />
greater simplicity in one's<lb />
statements of complex<lb />
artistic truths is the mark<lb />
of the maturing artist, as<lb />
the work of Allen's idol,<lb />
Bergman, testifies. Man-<lb />
hattan is, thus, his best<lb />
film to date.<lb />
But, all things being<lb />
equal, the comic vision is<lb />
more intelligent and wiser<lb />
than the tragic, and in the<lb />
end more powerful and<lb />
useful. This is why it is<lb />
still important to be funny.<lb />
Filmmakers like Ingmar<lb />
Bergman may let us know<lb />
how it feels, but we know<lb />
that, to some extent,<lb />
already. Filmmakers like<lb />
Woody Allen the comic<lb />
Woody Allen help us to<lb />
deal with it.<lb />
At the end of the<lb />
beautiful Annie Hall,<lb />
AllenAlvy comes on again<lb />
to deliver one of the great<lb />
monologues of all time:<lb />
Allen uoos Keaton in 'Annie Hall<lb />
"Doc, my brother is<lb />
crazy. He thinks he's a<lb />
chicken<lb />
The Doc says, "Why<lb />
don't you turn him in?"<lb />
"I would, but I need<lb />

Pirates face 15th-ranked UNC Saturday<lb />

Pirate fumble al I INC in 78<lb />
By CHARLES CHANDLER<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
To the East Carolina football team and head coach<lb />
Pat Dye, this Saturday's football game with 15th ranked<lb />
North Carolina is not just any other game.<lb />
"It's a big game, there's no doubt about that said<lb />
Dye. "People were calling it a big game way back in<lb />
July and August<lb />
But back then ECU fans had invisioned the Pirates<lb />
going into this game with an undefeated record, and a<lb />
3-0 slate against Big Four schools. Such is not the case.<lb />
As a matter of fact, the Pirates are 0-3 against the Big<lb />
Four.<lb />
so Saturday's game is not to gain a sweep of the<lb />
in-state Atlantic Coast Conference schools, but rather to<lb />
avoid a sweep by them.<lb />
"With a win at Chapel Hill Saturday we have a<lb />
chance to save a little face said Dye. "For that reason<lb />
we have probably put more significance on the game.<lb />
But nothing can erase those three losses<lb />
The losses came in close games at N.C. State and<lb />
Wake Forest and in an error-prone one at Duke.<lb />
"We're a much better team now than we were in<lb />
any of those games, said Dye. "Our two open dates<lb />
have helped tremendously<lb />
The open dates Dye spoke of came on Oct. 6 and<lb />
Oct. 20. In between the two off-weeks the Pirates<lb />
manhandled The Citadel 49-7 on Oct. 13.<lb />
"The open date before the Citadel game was a big<lb />
help said Dye. "I hope the one last week will prove to<lb />
be also<lb />
When asked at his weekly Wednesday press<lb />
luncheon whether or not he thought the Pirates had had<lb />
too much time off lately, Dye replied, 'That's hard to<lb />
sav until Saturday. But I don't think that will be a<lb />
problem, maybe against a lesser opponent but not<lb />
Carolina. We have had no problem keeping the players'<lb />
attention over the last two weeks<lb />
One thing the two open dates have done is allow two<lb />
injured stars to heal. Offensive tackle Joe Godette and<lb />
defensive tackle Noah Clark are both expected back in<lb />
action Saturday against the Tar Heels, though neither is<lb />
slated to start. Both suffered knee injuries last month.<lb />
"I don't know how much they'll play right now<lb />
said Dve. "It's just hard to tell how far they've come<lb />
back <lb />
One thing about the contest that must concern Dye is<lb />
the home field advantage that the Heels will enjoy. "I<lb />
hope the ball will bounce our way a time or two he<lb />
said. "Usually if the football bounces in Kenan Stadium<lb />
it ends up in the hands of someone in a blue shirt<lb />
Dye thinks the Pirates are ready for the Tar Heels,<lb />
both mentally and physically. "I don't think our team is<lb />
going up there scared. At least I hope not. If we do we<lb />
will have some big, big problems<lb />
"I would like to think we can make it a good football<lb />
game, and maybe even come away with a win<lb />
Dye must feel confident about the ability of the<lb />
Pirate offense to move the ball on the UNC defense.<lb />
ECU ranks seventh in the nation in total offense, fourth<lb />
in rushing offense and 14th in scoring offense.<lb />
"We've moved the ball all year said Dye, "even in<lb />
the loss to Duke. A big key for our offense, though, is<lb />
that our defense make some things happen<lb />
As for the nationally ranked Tar Heels, who are 5-1,<lb />
Dye knows they will be impressive.<lb />
"They're playing better than at any time last<lb />
year he said. "Carolina has no weaknesses that we<lb />
can detect. They're just a sound, very talented,<lb />
well-coached football team<lb />
Kickoff time is slated for 1 p.m. at Carolina's Kenan<lb />

Odom made it clear<lb />

"I tried to get in touch<lb />

Crum, Tar Heels wary of Pirate wishbone attack<lb />
a<lb />
By JIMMV DuPREE<lb />

f a spectacular 35-21 triumph over the<lb />
fpacl Mate, it would appear that all is well<lb />
tor the Tar Heels of North Carolina.<lb />
id coach Dick Crum and the rest of his<lb />
ipel Hill contingent had no rest before they had to<lb />
e for the invasion of the Pirates of East Carolina<lb />
Saturday at Kenan Stadium.<lb />
"East Carolina will be the quickest team we have<lb />
d all season said Crum. "I am happy to be<lb />
playing a team of East Carolina's caliber at this point in<lb />
the -eason.<lb />
"You usually play up to the caliber of the opposition<lb />
i with playing someone below your levd, you're likelv<lb />
to lose some momentum<lb />
The Heels possess the top-ranked rushing defense in<lb />
the Atlantic Coast Conference, which could upset the<lb />
basically run-oriented wishbone of the Pirates.<lb />
"Leander Green is as good a wishbone quarterback<lb />
a- I've seen said Crum. "East Carolina is a better<lb />
I a-ing team than most wishbone teams, too<lb />
The passing defense of the Tar Heels showed signs<lb />
of breakdowns against State at Carter-Finley Stadium,<lb />
and East Carolina must capitalize on those mistakes.<lb />
Wolfpack quarterback Scott Smith repeatedly<lb />
contacted with tight end Lin Dawson, his second for the<lb />
Pack's first touchdown of the contest. Smith later hit<lb />
split end Mike Quick on a bomb to bring State to within<lb />
a touchdown of the floundering Heels.<lb />
"It's just one of those things explained Crum.<lb />
"Smith got excellent protection and he found a<lb />
receiver<lb />
The Pirates will have to establish a running attack<lb />
early and mix in passes to keep UNC off guard.<lb />
"We must avoid mistakes and turnovers says ECU<lb />
assistant Al Kincaid.<lb />
"Last year we turned the ball over to them six times.<lb />
We can ill afford to do that this year<lb />
Kincaid considers the Heels' linebackers to be<lb />
stronger than those of the Wolfpack, with Buddy Curry<lb />
(6-3, 221) and Darrell Nicholson (6-2, 223) "the key to<lb />
the defense<lb />
"Carolina plays a scheme where they try to protect<lb />
the linebackers so they can run from side to side said<lb />
Kincaid. "Carolina's defense is a lot like State's was at<lb />
the first of the year<lb />
Head coach Pat Dye states that "Carolina has no<lb />
weaknesses that we can detect.<lb />
"At most places they have exceptional depth he<lb />
said. "Their two inside linebackers are the best we've<lb />
ever played against<lb />
Offensively, the picture gets no better for East<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
"Famous" Amos Lawrence will probably not start<lb />
due to a continuing pulled groin muscle, but he will<lb />
figure into the Heels' game plans extensively.<lb />
Lawrence leads the team with 135 carries for 613<lb />
yards (4.5 yards per carry, 102.2 per game), even<lb />
though seeing limited action the past two outings.<lb />
Fullback Doug Paschall filled in at tailback against<lb />
State and is scheduled to start at that position against<lb />
the Bucs, with junior Billy Johnson lining up at fullback.<lb />
Quarterback Matt Kupec has connected on 64 out of<lb />
112 passes, including 10 touchdowns and only three<lb />
interceptions.<lb />
"They're going to run over us, around us, through<lb />
us and if that doesn't work, they're going to pass said<lb />
ECU assistant Wayne Hall.<lb />
"Kupec can throw well and he's an excellent<lb />
scrambler. Paschall gives them a real strong running<lb />
attack along with Billy Johnson. With those two in the<lb />
backfield, Carolina has a powerful running attack.<lb />
"Then they'll bring in Lawrence who's great on the<lb />
sweeps. They have two completely different offenses,<lb />
depending on who's in the backfield.<lb />
"It's going to be a real physical game he added.<lb />
"Carolina has an excellent offensive line. (Steve)<lb />
Junkman, (Ron) Wooten, and (Rick) Donnalley form a<lb />

Billy Johnson bulls his way<lb /><pb facs="00057226_tn_0010" /><lb />

The fact that the<lb />

a tribute to their dedi-<lb />

Mackovic and his staff.<lb />
They have taken the same<lb />

Foremost among them<lb />
is Saturday's meeting with<lb />
13th-ranked Auburn. The<lb />

the underdog, although<lb />

On Tuesday, the IOC<lb />

Rivalry<lb />
Cont'd from p. 9<lb />
the Pirates and Heels has not grown to the point where<lb />
it ranks with the Duke-Carolina and State-Carolina<lb />
rivalries.<lb />
"The East Carolina game just doesn't mean quite as<lb />
much to our students as the Duke and State games<lb />
said UNC Sports Information Director Rick Brewer.<lb />
"The tradition is the big thing in those games. We<lb />
haven't been playing ECU that long whereas we've been<lb />
playing Duke and State since way back when<lb />
Brewer does believe, though, that Carolina fans<lb />
want, and want badly, to beat the Pirates Saturday. "So<lb />
many of our students here have friends at ECU. They<lb />
would surely like to be able to go home with bragging<lb />
rights<lb />
And brag is exactly what the Tar Heels will do, says<lb />
ECU junior Frank Thornton. "The students there talk an<lb />
awful lot of junk said Thornton. "Last year when they<lb />
beat us, they talked like they'd just won World War HI<lb />
or something<lb />
From a player's point of view, Pirate offensive guard<lb />
Matt Mulholland thinks Saturday's contest is more thar<lb />
just any other game.<lb />
"It's always special to play in Chapel Hill said<lb />
Mulholland. "There's a lot of tradition there.<lb />
"There is definitely a big rivalry between the two<lb />
schools. The so Called 'hate factor' is generated by the<lb />
schools themselves. For example, East Carolina people<lb />
consider Carolina uppity while East Carolina people and<lb />
the school are called ECTC and stuff like that. I guess<lb />
it's sort of like the farmers playing the city boys<lb />
As game time draws near, the chatter about the<lb />
contest will grow. The stands will be full of hate talk<lb />
come Saturday. And no matter who wins, one can be<lb />
sure that the talk will not cease after the game is over.<lb />

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)<lb />
 If the University of<lb />
South Carolina trustees<lb />
fire basketball Coach<lb />
Frank McGuire, as news<lb />
reports indicate they plan<lb />
to do, they'll also have to<lb />
come up with a new team.<lb />
All 14 team members<lb />
told trustees Wednesday<lb />
they will not play for<lb />
anyone but McGuire,<lb />
South Carolina's coach for<lb />
the past 15 years.<lb />
"It is rumored that at<lb />
the board of trustees<lb />
meeting this Friday, Oct.<lb />
2b, enough votes will be<lb />
received not to renew<lb />
Frank McGuire's contract<lb />
as head basketball coach<lb />
unless he agrees to take a<lb />
job as vice president for<lb />
public relations next<lb />
year the team said in a<lb />
tatement.<lb />
"The team unanimous-<lb />
ly agrees that if Coach<lb />
McGuire is fired we will<lb />
not play.<lb />
"Our team is angered<lb />
by the way the board of<lb />
trustees has seeminly gone<lb />
out of their way to<lb />
embarrass Coach McGuire<lb />
and demoralize our team<lb />
on the eve of a season we<lb />
know will be a highly<lb />
successful one the<lb />
statement said.<lb />
Captain Mike Doyle,<lb />
who issued the statement<lb />
on behalf of the team, told<lb />
The Associated Press,<lb />
"This was the team's<lb />
idea. Our coach had<lb />
nothing to do about it<lb />
Doyle said McGuire<lb />
was told of the statement<lb />
and "he's real proud of<lb />
us. He's happy we're<lb />

 Frank Luca, manager-<lb />
trainee of heavyweight<lb />
boxer Earnie Shavers, says<lb />
an eye injury suffered on<lb />
Sept. 28 during his loss to<lb />
World Boxing Council<lb />
champion Larry Holmes<lb />
has not placed his career<lb />
in jeopardy.<lb />
Luca, a resident of<lb />
Canton, was concerned<lb />
because published reports<lb />
suggesting that Shaver's<lb />
career might be over<lb />
because of a torn retina.<lb />
"Earnie is just fine<lb />
Luca said Tuesday. "It's a<lb />
very minor situation.<lb />
Earnie got thumbed in the<lb />
third round of the Holmes<lb />
fight, and from that round<lb />
on he was having trouble<lb />
with double vision. So he<lb />
had eye surgery.<lb />
"He had a pinhead<lb />
tear of the retina. But the<lb />
operation was a total<lb />
success and Earnie will be<lb />
back in the gym sparring<lb />
i.i six weeks. In fact, I'd<lb />
love to get a fight with Big<lb />
John Tate for the World<lb />
Boxing Association title<lb />
Luca added.<lb />
The boxer's stay in<lb />
Baltimore's Johns Hopkins<lb />
Hospital after his 11th<lb />
Columbia radio station<lb />
WSCQ on Tuesday said.<lb />
McGuire had rejected a<lb />
demand by the USC<lb />
trustees that he agree by<lb />
Friday to step down as<lb />
coach and accept a public<lb />
relations job at the uni-<lb />
versity.<lb />
McGuire was unavail-<lb />
able for comment Wed-<lb />
nesday. But he said<lb />
Tuesday he had no<lb />
knowledge that he would<lb />
be fired, adding that he<lb />
expects to coach at least<lb />
through next season.<lb />
University President<lb />
James B. Holderman said<lb />
the broadcast report was<lb />
based on "unfounded<lb />
rumor and trustees<lb />
chairman R. Markley<lb />
Dennis said the board had<lb />
issued no "ultimatums" to<lb />
McGuire.<lb />
A Columbia newspaper<lb />
reported Wednesday that<lb />
McGuire turned down the<lb />
trustees' offer of a<lb />
$75,000-a-year job as spe-<lb />
cial assistant to Holder-<lb />
man. According to The<lb />
State, McGuire also was<lb />
told he could conduct<lb />
basketball camps at USC's<lb />
Columbia and Conway<lb />
campuses and could re-<lb />
ceive profits from those<lb />
ventures.<lb />
Doyle said he wrote the<lb />
statement because "I<lb />
wanted everybody to know<lb />
about this. The team is<lb />
confused over this. We're<lb />
behind Coach 1,000 per-<lb />
cent<lb />
He said the team is<lb />
"going to stand behind<lb />
him (McGuire) all the<lb />
way no matter who is<lb />
considered by the uni-<lb />
versity as a successor.<lb />
WSCQ reported that Phi-<lb />
ladelphia 76er assistant<lb />
coach Chuck Daly was<lb />
among those being con-<lb />
sidered by USC officials.<lb />
The statement was<lb />
signed by Kevin Dunleavy,<lb />

McGuire is the only<lb />
college coach to win more<lb />
than 100 games at three<lb />
schools. A member of the<lb />
National Basketball Hall of<lb />

Odom focuses on intensity<lb />
By CHARLES CHANDLER<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
"The word is intensity<lb />
This is the law according to Odom. Dave Odom, that<lb />
is, the new East Carolina head basketball coach.<lb />
And intense is the approach that he is taking as he<lb />
tries to turn around the fortunes of a weak Pirate<lb />
basketball program.<lb />
Intense is also the way Odom will have his players<lb />
approach each and every game. "There is no room for<lb />
the weak noted Odom with authority.<lb />
Odom has been a very busy man since he was<lb />
chosen for the East Carolina post this past March 23.<lb />
Other than recruiting, one of the first pieces of<lb />
business that Odom set out to take care of was the<lb />
situation of academics. When Odom arrived at ECU, five<lb />
of the nine returning Pirate lettermen were academically<lb />
ineligible for the 1979-80 season.<lb />
These players had, for the most part, taken a<lb />
nonchalant attitude, to say the least, toward academics.<lb />
They attended very few classes and therefore had very<lb />
little success within the courses. Odom took immediate<lb />
action as he tried to get across to the players how<lb />
important it was for them to enter summer school and<lb />
do well. It was of vital importance not only to the<lb />
individual players but to the team as well.<lb />
Well, summer school has ended and Odom's first<lb />
dealing with a crisis ended with a booming success. All<lb />
five players did quite well in summer school and will be<lb />
eligible for play when basketball season rolls around.<lb />
"We are tremendously pleased in the change of the<lb />
attitude: of our players regarding academics said<lb />
Odom. "We've spent much time working in this area<lb />
and will continue to work hard. I want all the players to<lb />
move towards graduation. I'd like to see them all leave<lb />
with a diploma<lb />
While Odom was solving the problem of his<lb />
ineligible players, another problem crept up on him.<lb />
During the summer, the East Carolina basketball<lb />
program was placed on probation for one year by the<lb />
NCAA because of accused violations during the<lb />
recruitment of sophomore center Al Tyson.<lb />
Odom, ever the optimist, looks at the problem in<lb />
a positive manner. "The thing I hate about being on<lb />
probation is that we are ineligible for post-season<lb />
tournaments. I'm sorry for our seniors in that respect.<lb />
But the way we will look at the probation is that we<lb />
want to be so good that it will be the NCAA's loss that<lb />
they will be unable to invite us<lb />
The ex-Wake Forest assistant noted that he was<lb />
pleased with the efforts put forth by University officials<lb />
in the basketball program's behalf during the NCAA<lb />
investigations. "I feel like everything that could have<lb />
been done was done he said.<lb />
"Student attendence is the atmosphere, the degree<lb />
of excitement staged by the fans. From the students is<lb />
where the atmosphere must originate<lb />
To the avid basketball fan, Odom would appear to be<lb />
very organized in his quest to bring supremacy to the<lb />
Pirate roundball program. And organized he is.<lb />
Organization has been the name of the game with<lb />
Odom throughout his coaching career. How else could<lb />
he have moved from a high school coach in Durham to<lb />
head coach at a major university in four short years?<lb />
As for his sudden rise, Odom simply stated that it<lb />
was a matter of being ready.<lb />
"I've been very fortunate to meet many, many<lb />
people who have given me some great opportunities.<lb />
The key thing in life is so much in seeing an opportunity<lb />
when it arises and being prepared for it. So many don't<lb />
prepare. I've been lucky enough to have been ready<lb />
"Lucky enough to have been ready he says. The<lb />
same can be said for the East Carolina basketball<lb />
program when hearing of the availability of a man<lb />
named Odom.<lb />
Football played at Temple<lb />
By<lb />
HERSCHELNISSENSON<lb />
AP Sports Writer<lb />
Quick, who's the coach<lb />
at Temple University?<lb />
No, it's not Harrv<lb />
J<lb />
Litwack, although he was<lb />
the basketball coach there<lb />
for 21 sears, winning 373<lb />
games, and it's not Josh<lb />
Cody, his predecessor,<lb />
who won 122 games in 10<lb />
seasons.<lb />
You might be halfway<lb />
right if you said Don<lb />
Casey, but he's the<lb />
current basketball coach.<lb />
We're talking about the<lb />
itbail coach.<lb />
You mean Temple has<lb />
a football team? Isn't<lb />
Temple a basketball<lb />
school?<lb />
Yes, and a good one,<lb />
but it's a pretty good<lb />
i'H'tball school, too. The<lb />
legendary Pop Warner<lb />
coached there from 1933-<lb />
38 and Ray Morrison,<lb />
famed as the architect of<lb />
Southern Methodist's<lb />
aerial circus of the '20s<lb />
and '30s, coached there<lb />
from 1940-48.<lb />
The current coach, in<lb />
his 10th season, is Wayne<lb />
Hardin, the same Wayne<lb />
Hardin who led Navy to a<lb />
38-22-2 record from'1959-<lb />
64 and coached the 1960<lb />
and 1963 Heisman Trophy<lb />
winners, Joe Bellino and<lb />
Roger Staubach.<lb />
Temple University was<lb />
founded in 1884 as a non-<lb />
sectarian institution de-<lb />
signed to serve able and<lb />
deserving students of lim-<lb />
ited means. More than 90<lb />
years later, Temple, which<lb />
has been a Common-<lb />
wealth of Pennsylvania<lb />
university since 1965, has<lb />
a widely diversified stu-<lb />
dent body of some 33,000.<lb />
The university is the<lb />
largest employer in the<lb />
North Philadelphia area,<lb />
with some 9,500 persons<lb />
employed at the main<lb />
campus and the Health<lb />
Sciences Center.<lb />
But, says Hardin,<lb />
There are people in<lb />
Philadelphia who don't<lb />
even know we're in<lb />
Philadelphia<lb />
If they don't, they're<lb />
learning.<lb />
Temple has posted<lb />
seven winning seasons<lb />
under Hardin, who has<lb />
become the school's win-<lb />
ningest football coach ever<lb />
with a 63-32-3 mark,<lb />
including 6-1 this year, the<lb />
only setback a 10-9 loss to<lb />
12th-ranked Pitt.<lb />
"We get kidded about<lb />
our short, fat kids<lb />
Hardin says. "They may<lb />
be 6-2 and 270 pounds but<lb />
we don't check 'em in the<lb />
40. They may not be too<lb />
fast over 40 yards, but<lb />
from here to there they're<lb />
not too bad, and that's all<lb />
we ask of 'em.<lb />
"Our players are great<lb />
kids. They work their butts<lb />
off. They weren't highly<lb />
recruited, they're not guys<lb />
everybody wanted, so<lb />
they've got something to<lb />
prove<lb />
So does Hardin. He<lb />
has this wild dream of<lb />
Temple going to the sugar<lb />
Bowl and he reminds one<lb />
and all that the Owls<lb />
played in the first Sugar<lb />
Bowl game, losing 20-14 to<lb />
Tulane on Jan. 1, 1935.<lb />
"Aww Hardin says,<lb />
"that's 10 years away, if<lb />
it's that. Let's be realistic<lb />
we're still Temple<lb />
When it comes to<lb />
picking bowl teams, it's<lb />
not only whether vou win<lb />
or lose but where you play<lb />
the game, not necessarily<lb />
how.<lb />
For example, Florida<lb />
State is one of the few<lb />
remaining unbeaten-untied<lb />
teams but don't hold your<lb />
breath waiting for the<lb />
Seminoles to be invited to<lb />
the Orange Bowl, even if<lb />
they go 11-0.<lb />
The Orange Bowl, like<lb />
any other bowl, wants<lb />
teams whose followers will<lb />
arrive well before the<lb />
game say a week or two<lb />
 and spend lots of<lb />
money. The Orange Bowl<lb />
people are afraid the<lb />
Florida State supporters<lb />
will drive down from<lb />
Tallahassee on game day<lb />
and leave shortly after the<lb />
final gun.<lb />
If the Orange Bowl<lb />
frowns on Florida State,<lb />
how do you think the<lb />
Sugar Bowl feels about the<lb />
possibility of having<lb />
thrice-beaten Georgia as<lb />
the host team instead of<lb />
No. 1-ranked Alabama?<lb />
It could happen. In-<lb />
deed, it will happen if<lb />
Georgia wins its remaining<lb />
Southeastern Conference<lb />
games against Kentucky,<lb />
Florida and Auburn, even<lb />
if the Bulldogs lose non-<lb />
conference games to Vir-<lb />
ginia and Georgia Tech<lb />
and wind up with a 6-5<lb />
record.<lb />
If Georgia and Ala-<lb />
bama finish with 6-0 SEC<lb />
logs, Georgia goes to New<lb />
Orleans because Bama<lb />
went last year.<lb />
"I voted for the current<lb />
rule says Tennessee<lb />

out on the field, whether I<lb />
make $12,000, as I did at<lb />
Cincinnati in 1965 when I<lb />
got 209 hits, or whether I<lb />
make $800,000 or $900,000<lb />

208. I never see my<lb />

Rose can't be considered a<lb />
model athletic specimen,<lb />
at 38 he is getting long on<lb />
the tooth as ball players<lb />
go. Critics say he can't<lb />
run or throw.<lb />
"I know how to run. I<lb />
know how to throw. But<lb />
nobody says I can't hit. I<lb />
always could hit. As for<lb />
my age, I've seen some<lb />
guys over the hill at 28<lb />
and others good at 40 like<lb />
the Cy Young winner last<lb />
year Gaylord Perry. Look<lb />
at me. I've got strong<lb />
arms and strong legs.<lb />
They're my assets. They<lb />
say the legs are the first to<lb />
go. I ought to have three<lb />
or four years left<lb />
Did Rose think the<lb />
Firing of Phillies manager<lb />
Danny Ozark was justi-<lb />
fied?<lb />
"When I put on my<lb />
uniform, it doesn't say<lb />
'Sparky Anderson 'Dave<lb />
Bristol' or 'Danny Ozark'<lb />
across the chest. It says<lb />
'Phillies I don't play for<lb />
the manager. I play for a<lb />
team, the city and the<lb />
fans.<lb />
"But the one thing I<lb />
regretted going to Phila-<lb />
delphia was that I had to<lb />
be a part of Danny getting<lb />
fired. It wasn't Danny's<lb />
fault. Every man on the<lb />
team was responsible. I<lb />
was responsible<lb />
Rose, who erased an-<lb />
other of Cobb's records by<lb />
getting 200 hits in his 10th<lb />
season and who was on<lb />
base more than 300 times<lb />
counting walks, showed<lb />
his true character when he<lb />
was presented the Aqua<lb />
Velva Cup for compiling<lb />
the year's longest hitting<lb />
streak 23 games. The<lb />
award carried a cash prize<lb />
of $23,000 $1,000 for<lb />
each game.<lb />
"I gave that away<lb />
weeks ago Rose said. "I<lb />
gave it to the coaches, the<lb />
trainers and clubhouse<lb />
crew. Just as I gave away<lb />
nine Jeeps to guys in<lb />
Cincinnati when I left<lb />
there. Those guys don<lb />
