1978 SGA ELECTIONS were held this<lb />
Tuesday. A relatively light voter turnout<lb />
was reported in most precincts.<lb />

SGA elections 'went smoothly<lb />
By JANE BIDDIX<lb />
Staff Reporter<lb />
Even with light voter turn out and the<lb />
dosing of one pott, thto year'a SGA tan<lb />
elections "went smoothly" as stated by<lb />
Elections Committee Chairperson and<lb />
SGA Vice President, David Cartwright.<lb />
According to the SGA Constitution,<lb />
the closing of a poll must be decided by<lb />
the legislature but because this was the<lb />
election to form the legislature, the<lb />
summer legislature, the Executive<lb />
Branch of SGA, acted on the situation.<lb />
According to Cartwright, the poll at<lb />
the Allied Health building was cancelled<lb />
because of a shortage of poll tenders.<lb />
Cartwright said a member of the<lb />
Elections Committee, Jaret Dunn,<lb />
contacted the PRC Club President, Di<lb />
Wortby to have the club man the polls, as<lb />
they had don the job so successfully last<lb />
spring.<lb />
Wortby assured Dunn that the club<lb />
could handle the polls.<lb />
Cartwright said Monday afternoon he<lb />
received word that 501? man hours<lb />
remained to be filled at the polls.<lb />
With the help of members of the PRC<lb />
Club and WRC enough people were<lb />
found to cover all but the Allied Health<lb />
precinct with approximately three other<lb />
precincts opening one hour late.<lb />
Cartwright regretted this action but<lb />
said nothing else could be done<lb />
Cartwright said he was pleased with<lb />
the way the elections went "especially<lb />
since no one on the Elections Committee<lb />
had ever worKed on an election before<lb />
Elections Committee members served<lb />
as ballot counters.<lb />
Members are: Chairperon (SGA V.P.)<lb />
- David Cartwright; Vice Chairperson<lb />
SGA Secretary) - Lynn Bell; Tondea<lb />
Jackson; Janet Dunn; (SGA Treasurer) -<lb />
Zack Smith; Jeff Fleming and Linda<lb />
Barber.<lb />
Dean Alexander and Dr. Tucker,<lb />
Administrative Advisors to the SGA put<lb />
in appearances showing their concern<lb />
and interest.<lb />
i bauewe the counting of ballots went<lb />
smoother and taster this year than n<lb />
years past said Dean Alexander.<lb />
He also sent "congratulations to the<lb />
winners and my sympathies to the<lb />
losers<lb />
Cartwright notified candidates who<lb />
were not present of the results by phone<lb />
following the final tally.<lb />
According to Cartwright, the returns<lb />
are not official until they have been<lb />
checked once more, which is scheduled<lb />
for Wednesday.<lb />
Carwright stated that there were<lb />
virtually "no problems" except that the<lb />
elections committee regrets the unfor-<lb />
tunate situation as a result of the<lb />
revocation of the reduced advertising<lb />
rates in FOUNTAINHEAD.<lb />
"I hope this didn't hurt any of the<lb />
candidates chances of being elected<lb />
said Vice Chairperson Lynn Bell.<lb />
Some of the candidates present had<lb />
these election comments and reactions:<lb />

A continuing debate on<lb />
the proposed campus radio<lb />
station WECU-FM and a<lb />
list of appropriations pre-<lb />
sented by Robert Swaim on<lb />
behalf of FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD highlighted yester-<lb />
day's Media Board meet-<lb />
ing.<lb />
The meeting began with<lb />
discussion over the present<lb />
status of the proposed FM<lb />
conversion of the campus<lb />
radio station WECU.<lb />
The board discussed<lb />
Chancellor Brewer's hiring<lb />
of an independent engineer<lb />
to do a study on the<lb />
proposed application to the<lb />
FCC to convert WECU to<lb />
FM.<lb />
Dean Alexander com-<lb />
mented that Dr. Brewer<lb />
wanted to examine the<lb />
situation as it pertained to<lb />
the license, since the li-<lb />
cense application has been<lb />
signed by Dr. Jenkins,<lb />
Brewer's predecessor.<lb />
Dr. Brewer hired Law-<lb />
rence Behr, a Greenville<lb />
engineer to double-check<lb />
the application.<lb />
According to Tommy<lb />
Joe Payne, Media Board<lb />
chairperson, Brewer had<lb />
some doubts about the<lb />
radio station, and he hired<lb />
an engineer to find out<lb />
what responsibilities the<lb />
university had to assume if<lb />
broadcast activity began.<lb />
Behr found several mis-<lb />
takes in the application. On<lb />
a topographic map, sent to<lb />
the FCC in Washington,<lb />
the location fo the studio<lb />
and transmitter is approx-<lb />
imately 1.8 milea off of its<lb />
actual location in Pitt<lb />
County.<lb />
According to Payne, the<lb />
mistakes will be corrected<lb />
by Mr.Edward Perry, who<lb />
is employed by FM Edu-<lb />
cational associates, the firm<lb />
which Is handling the li-<lb />
cense application.<lb />
According to Payne,<lb />
Perry said that mistakes on<lb />
license application are not<lb />
uncommon, and said they<lb />
are easily corrected.<lb />
He also said the original<lb />
mistakes would not jeo-<lb />
pardize the application at<lb />
all.<lb />
Dean Alexander said<lb />
there were still many que-<lb />
stions to be answered. He<lb />
said the radio station would<lb />
belong to the university,<lb />
and approval would have to<lb />
be sought on several mat-<lb />
ters.<lb />
Alexander said that<lb />
modifications to existing<lb />
buildings would have to be<lb />
approved. He said the<lb />
present site in Joyner li-<lb />
brary is to be used for the<lb />
studio, building modifica-<lb />
tions need to be approved.<lb />
He also said the pro-<lb />
posed antenna, slanted to<lb />
be construction on the roof<lb />
of Tyler Dorm, had not yet<lb />
been approved.<lb />
Alexander commented<lb />
further about proposals<lb />
which had not yet been<lb />
approved, saying that the<lb />
possible electric bill would<lb />
be high, and that, no one<lb />
had figured out where the<lb />
money would come from to<lb />
pay for it.<lb />
Alexander stressed the<lb />
need for a full-time pro-<lb />
fessional general manager<lb />
for the radio station.<lb />
He said a manager<lb />
would provide "continuity"<lb />
from year to year.<lb />
He said further that a<lb />
college radio station in<lb />
Pennsylvania had lost its<lb />
FCC license because of lack<lb />
of management, and he<lb />
thought a professional sta-<lb />
tion manager would pre-<lb />
vent that situation from<lb />
happening here.<lb />
Chairman Payne then<lb />
said the the general station<lb />
manager had nothing to do<lb />
with the license revocation<lb />
in the Pennsylvania case.<lb />
Alexander said that a<lb />
professional was needed<lb />
not only to provide guid-<lb />
ance for the station, but<lb />
also to provide an effective<lb />
liason between the media<lb />
board and WECU.<lb />
Dr. Tucker then stres-<lb />
sed the point that if Penn-<lb />
sylvania had taken reme-<lb />
dial action, the FCC license<lb />
would not have been re-<lb />
voked. Payne, quoted<lb />
Chancellor Brewer saying<lb />
that a general manager for<lb />
the station was not needed<lb />
as long as the station had a<lb />
low power rating, and did<lb />
not carry out of Pitt County.<lb />
Dean Alexander said<lb />
that Chancellor Brewer<lb />
does not want to run the<lb />
station that the chan-<lb />
cellor's main concern is<lb />
with excellence.<lb />
In the closing remarks<lb />
on the WECU debate, the<lb />
statement was made that<lb />
the FM conversion was still<lb />
a "long way off<lb />
In other business, Ro-<lb />
bert Swaim, advertising<lb />
manager for FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD brought forth a list<lb />
of requests for appropri-<lb />
ations.<lb />
Swaim told the board<lb />
that the telephone company<lb />
was requiring FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD to pay its local<lb />
phone bill a year in ad-<lb />
vance.<lb />
This item, according to<lb />
Swaim, was not anticiapted<lb />
in the original budget re-<lb />
quest. The board appro-<lb />
priated $559.20 for this<lb />
purpose.<lb />
Swaim also said tht last<lb />
May, a shipment of sup-<lb />
plies came to FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD, but that the bill was<lb />

Alumni Association<lb />
proposed to provide<lb />
acctdemic improvement<lb />
By JANE BIDDIX<lb />
Staff Reporter<lb />
The proposed ECU Stu-<lb />
dent Alumni Association<lb />
has been underway since<lb />
last spring, according to<lb />
Tommy Joe Payne. SGA<lb />
president.<lb />
Dr Charles Brown, Di-<lb />
rector of Institutional Dev-<lb />
elopment and Payne have<lb />
worked together with<lb />
Chancellor Brewer and Don<lb />
Leggett, head of the Al-<lb />
umni Association to devel-<lb />
op the idea ot a Student<lb />
Alumni Association.<lb />
The proposed Associa-<lb />
tion will orient students<lb />
with the Alumni program,<lb />
Payne said.<lb />
It will also provide<lb />
monies for the furtherance<lb />
of academics, student and<lb />
faculty research, better e-<lb />
quipment. and higher sal-<lb />
aries for deserving pro-<lb />
fessors.<lb />
According to Payne,<lb />
ECU has 35,(XX) Alumni to<lb />
date, and if each con-<lb />
tributed $10 to the alumni<lb />
association the university<lb />
could add $350,000 to the<lb />
improvement of the aca-<lb />
demic community.<lb />
To raise money it is<lb />
hoped that the association<lb />
can get seniors to pledge<lb />
$10 per year for 3 years<lb />
following graduation.<lb />
In addition to the<lb />
pledge, a telethon has been<lb />
suggested tentatively to be<lb />
held in October, in which<lb />
ECU alumni will be called<lb />
and asked for contribu-<lb />
tions.<lb />
Any gifts can be spe-<lb />
cified for use in a particular<lb />
area.<lb />
Structurally, the officers<lb />
and active members will<lb />
consist of the approx-<lb />
imately 50 presidents of the<lb />
major campus organiza-<lb />
tions.<lb />
Payne said it is open to<lb />
all interested students who<lb />
would like to work with the<lb />
association.<lb />
According to Payne,<lb />
other schools known<lb />
throughout the country for<lb />
their academic excellence<lb />
have private monies to<lb />
support their academic<lb />
standards.<lb />
At the present time<lb />
UNC-Chapel Hill is plan-<lb />
ning to raise their en-<lb />
dowment fund to $1 mil-<lb />
lion.<lb />
An organization!<lb />
meeting will be held in<lb />
Mendenhall Thurs Sept.<lb />
28 at 7 p.m. to elect officers<lb />
and set goals and guide-<lb />
lines for the association.<lb />
"I would like to return<lb />
in 10 years and see the<lb />
school improved Payne<lb />
said.<lb />
Many of the funds raised<lb />
will be sent to Memorial<lb />
Hospital in Chapel Hill for<lb />
the children.<lb />
The Greeks are a large<lb />
minority on campus. Along<lb />
with associating with mem-<lb />
bers of the organization,<lb />
they like to be heard on the<lb />
entire campus.<lb />
In order to do so, you<lb />
must get involved and send<lb />
your material into<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD to be<lb />
published. The deadline is<lb />
every Tuesday by Noon in<lb />
the Sigmas Box in Dean<lb />
Fulghum's office. All mat-<lb />
erial must be in list form,<lb />
preferably typed.<lb />
In order to have a good<lb />

be participation. Get busy<lb />
and let the campus know<lb />

elected. The only step remaining before they<lb />
may hold business is a perfunctory swearing in<lb />
ceremony. This year's legislature is made<lb />
primarily of fresh blood. Few legislators have<lb />
returned from last year but those who did<lb />
belong to both factions which have split the<lb />
SGA for the past three years. The time has<lb />
come to set aside the differences of the past<lb />
and to work as one body for the welfare of all<lb />
students.<lb />
Every organization needs a steady influx of<lb />
fresh opinions and ideas and the predominant-<lb />
ly rookie makeup of the legislature should<lb />
serve to rejuvenate the SGA. Undoubtedly<lb />
some of these new members will drop out;<lb />
others, people will wish they would drop out.<lb />
We are confident however that the majority<lb />
will be intelligent, objective legislators who<lb />
will devote their efforts to the present and not<lb />
dredge up dead issues from the past and waste<lb />
the legislature's valuabe time.<lb />
The next few weeks are crucial in<lb />
determining the success or failure of this<lb />
year's legislature for the next few weeks will<lb />
be devoted to deciding which organizations<lb />
should be funded and how much money they<lb />
should get. The bulk of the budget will go to<lb />
such traditionally large recipients as the<lb />
Transit System, the Marching Pirates, the<lb />
Visual Arts Forum, student loans, and the<lb />
legal service.<lb />
Generally, these budgets are voted on early<lb />
in the year and organizations who submit their<lb />
budgets or appropriation requests later will not<lb />
have as good a chance of getting everything<lb />
they wanted. Since each bill is sent through the<lb />
appropriations process in the order it is<lb />
received the earlier bills have an inordinate<lb />
advantage over bills which are important but<lb />
which came in after most of the money had<lb />
been given out.<lb />
One way to eliminate this unfairness would<lb />
be to establish a deadline for new budget bills<lb />
and then see how much money is needed and<lb />
how much is at hand to fulfill those needs. This<lb />
way each bill would have a more or less equal<lb />
chance of getting its fair share of the total SGA<lb />
budget and not just the fat of early fall or the<lb />
crumbs of winter.<lb />
The future looks promising for this year's<lb />
SGA. We look forward to a cordial relationship<lb />
with the legislature and hope they meet the<lb />
challenge before them in the wise expenditure<lb />
of approximately $150,000 in student fees.<lb />

Dorm life: 24 hour<lb />
By LUKE WHISNANT<lb />
The following column is<lb />
reprinted from<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD'S Oct.<lb />
20, 1977 issue.<lb />
Last week during the<lb />
cold weather, someone who<lb />
lives in Jarvis told me that<lb />
the dorms were on a strict<lb />
energy rationing program:<lb />
one aay there was hot water<lb />
and no heat, and the next<lb />
day the Neat was on but the<lb />
showers were arctic. I was<lb />
sympathetic. I remember<lb />
dozens of nights in Jones<lb />
when I was jerked awake as<lb />
the heat came on at 4 a.m<lb />
so loud you'd swear some-<lb />
one downstairs was beating<lb />
on the pipes with a ball-pen<lb />
hammer. I remember the<lb />
energy shortage last year,<lb />
too: Virginia Power and<lb />
Light sent memos around to<lb />
every room saying that one<lb />
of their generators was<lb />
down and if students did<lb />
not voluntarily conserve<lb />
power, they would have to<lb />
shut down the whole<lb />
University. Minutes after<lb />
the memo was distributed,<lb />
everyone on my hall<lb />
plugged in hotplates,<lb />
guitars, irons, 'electric<lb />
pencil sharpeners, TVs,<lb />
radios, razors, and hot-<lb />
combs. Every light in my<lb />
room was on; the stereo<lb />
was going full blast; and<lb />
my roommate was in the<lb />
hall yelling, "Waste power!<lb />
Let's go home "<lb />
Anytime I think of the<lb />
dorms now, I thank God I'm<lb />
out. I spent my required<lb />
two years there, and I<lb />
enjoyed a lot of it, but now<lb />
you couldn't get me back in<lb />
with a shotgun. Ask<lb />
anybodyeven the people<lb />
who live there-dorm life is<lb />
24-hour insanity.<lb />
The dormsrwhere you<lb />
can stand in the hall and<lb />
drink beer from a glass with<lb />
no hassle, but if it's in a<lb />
can, the hall advisor will<lb />
confiscate it. Where your<lb />
next-door-neighbor plays<lb />
his stereo at volume 9 but<lb />
you're not allowed to play<lb />
your acoustic guitar. Where<lb />
they fine you $5 for taking<lb />
the screen off your window.<lb />
Where it's legal to have<lb />
women guests at 1259 but<lb />
one minute later they can<lb />
be arrested for trespassing.<lb />
The dormswhere I ate<lb />
out every night because I<lb />
couldn't cope with cooking<lb />
on my tiny hotplate, which<lb />
kept short-circuiting any-<lb />
way. Where I learned in<lb />
the shower to duck when-<lb />
ever someone flushed the<lb />
toilet. Where I discovered<lb />
the true value of sleep.<lb />
Two years in a row I was<lb />
the only person on our hall<lb />
who got along with his<lb />
roommate. That meant<lb />
everyone else, who hated<lb />
their roommates, hung out<lb />
in our room. Lots of times I<lb />
locked the door and<lb />
pretended to be outlack of<lb />
solitude is definitely a<lb />
problem when you live in<lb />
the party room.<lb />
I never got anything<lb />
done in the dorms.The pace<lb />
was just too hard to live<lb />
with. Everything was so<lb />
laid-back, and at the same<lb />
time, so frantic, that it was<lb />
a real problem deciding<lb />
what to do when you<lb />
weren't in class. (Usually<lb />
your hall mates decided for<lb />
you.) And if you ever<lb />
settled down to an evening<lb />
of serious study, someone<lb />
was sure to start a panty<lb />
raid.<lb />
You could always find a<lb />
party in the dorms. I<lb />
remember standing in the<lb />
shower on my first morning<lb />
at ECU, talking with the<lb />
guy beside me about the<lb />
semi-annual perpetual<lb />
hangover of registration<lb />
week. We were both<lb />
impressed with the quan-<lb />
tity of partying the average<lb />
dorm student could tol-<lb />
erate, but I told him I was<lb />
sure things would be much<lb />
quieter during exam week.<lb />
"Hell he said, "these<lb />
people don't stop for<lb />
nothing. You wait and<lb />
COO <lb />
SOU.<lb />
He was right. No one in<lb />
the dorms is immune to<lb />
party fever, and exam week<lb />
just provided more free<lb />
time for getting wrecked.<lb />
The hyper people O.D.ed<lb />
on No-Ooze, crammed dur-<lb />
ing the day and partied all<lb />
night. The laid-back people<lb />
set up lawn chairs in the<lb />
shower, sat there and drank<lb />
beer under the cool water<lb />
all afternoon, and later<lb />
slept or crashed through<lb />
their exams. So many<lb />
people on our hall dropped<lb />
out after exams that LeRoy,<lb />
our janitor, commented,<lb />
"Livin' in these dorms will<lb />
drive you crazy. I know I<lb />
couldn't stand it<lb />
The dorms: where there<lb />
is always something to tear<lb />
up if you get bored. In<lb />
Aycock they put M-80's in<lb />
the commodes and literally<lb />
demolished the bathroom<lb />
fixtures. In Jones they<lb />
leaned 30-gallon garbage<lb />
cans full of water against a<lb />
door and waited for the<lb />
occupant to come out.<lb />
Every night there were<lb />
shaving cream fights and<lb />
trash can burnings. People<lb />
threw furniture out the<lb />
windows, kicked holes In<lb />
glass panels. One night I<lb />
watched a guy take an axe<lb />
to his chair-he smashed it<lb />
to kindling, too, without<lb />
batting an eye. My room-<lb />
mate that year was a<lb />
pyromaniac: he lit long<lb />
trails of lighter fluid in the<lb />
halls and burned announce<lb />
ments off the bulletin<lb />
board. Then he learned to<lb />
blow 12-foot fireballs from<lb />
his mouth and every night<lb />
during Homecoming week<lb />
he walked around College<lb />
Hill "treating" the dorms<lb />
to a fireshow.<lb />
To FOUNTAINHEAD<lb />
This is the season for<lb />
county fairs all over the<lb />
state of North Carolina.<lb />
They bring with them the<lb />
gyp-artistthe carnival<lb />
huckster.<lb />
His game may change<lb />
slightly from year to year,<lb />
or take on new trimmings,<lb />
. but its basic purpose<lb />
remains the same-to make<lb />
as much money as possible<lb />
in the short time available.<lb />
With such innocent<lb />
titles as football, cat-throw,<lb />
milk-bottle-throws, and<lb />
dish games, mouthed by a<lb />
fast-talking huckster capi-<lb />
talizing on the strong<lb />
appeal of something for<lb />
nothing, there is little<lb />
difficulty in finding enough<lb />
suckers.<lb />
Some of the games are<lb />
simple and produce income<lb />
at a slow but steady rate.<lb />
The old milk-bottle-throw<lb />
game is such a game. The<lb />
object of the game is to<lb />
knock a pyramid of bottles<lb />
off the stand with two balls.<lb />
The bottles are weighted-<lb />
we'll say one, two and six<lb />
pounds.<lb />
To produce a winner all<lb />
the operator has to do is<lb />
place the light bottles on<lb />
the bottom and the heavy<lb />
ones on top. After a little<lb />
encouragement wih lesser<lb />
prizesand perhaps addi-<lb />
tional attraction of a side<lb />
bet the fleecing begins.<lb />
The heavy bottles are<lb />
now placed on the bottom<lb />
and the light bottles end up<lb />
on top of the pyramid.<lb />
More complicated games<lb />
?re the big money-makers;<lb />
ones involving rolling a<lb />
number of small balls or<lb />
marbles on the board with<lb />
numbered holes. A chart<lb />
displays all the possible<lb />
totals, giving each total a<lb />
specific point value, usually<lb />
from zero to eight.<lb />
For SI, the victim is<lb />
given three rolls to make 10<lb />
points and win a prize. His<lb />
first three rolls add up to<lb />
21. Upon checking the<lb />
chart, he sees that his point<lb />
value is four.<lb />
He rolls again and<lb />
comes up with a 19, which<lb />
draws the point value of<lb />
two. Now he is informed<lb />
that he has hit the "jack-<lb />
pot and if he is willing to<lb />
put up $2.50 and roil again<lb />
for 10 points, he has a<lb />
chance to win not only the<lb />
prize, but $26 to-boot.<lb />
Now, untie the rules of<lb />
the "new game the<lb />
victim "cannot lose" un-<lb />
less he quits, but now each<lb />
roll will cost him an addi-<lb />
tional $2.50. Every time he<lb />
rolls the "jack-pot" num-<lb />
ber, it will cost him double<lb />
for the next roll- and the<lb />
"jack-pot" also doubles.<lb />
The victim's first roll in<lb />
the new game produces a<lb />
point value for which the<lb />
house pays double what the<lb />
victim Daid for the roll. On<lb />
his next roll, the player<lb />
draws 19; the "jack-pot"<lb />
jumps to $50 and the cost<lb />
per roll doubles. Another<lb />
roll turns up a "bonus<lb />
number' for which the<lb />
house adds $25 to the<lb />
"jack-pot<lb />
The process continues<lb />
until the "jack-pot" stands<lb />
at $250 and each roil is<lb />
costing the victim $10.<lb />
With the stakes high, quick<lb />
retrieving of the balls,<lb />
rapid "and inaccurate"<lb />
adding, and an abundance<lb />
of distracting chatter by the<lb />
operator, the accumulation<lb />
of points becomes more and<lb />
more difficult.<lb />
Before long the victim is<lb />
forced to quit, but not until<lb />
he has exhausted all his<lb />
funds and probably a sub-<lb />
stantial amount borrowed<lb />
from his buddies.<lb />
Go to the County Fair,<lb />
enjoy the rides, stay away<lb />
from the games.<lb />

the possibility of initiating a<lb />

This would make pos-<lb /><lb />

Three reading clinics offered here<lb />
By A RAH VENABLE<lb />
Staff Reporter<lb />
The Ecu School of Ed-<lb />
ucation presently sponsors<lb />
and finances three reading<lb />
clinics, according to Dr.<lb />
Mabel Laughter, director of<lb />
the education department.<lb />
The clinics are: (1)<lb />
university level clinic, (2) a<lb />
summer clinic for student<lb />
grades 1-12, and for (3)<lb />
teachers.<lb />
Dr. Keith Holmes star-<lb />
ted the clinics 24 years ago,<lb />
according to Laughter.<lb />
The university level<lb />
clinic is designed to dem-<lb />
onstrate diagnostic testing<lb />
procedures used with old-<lb />
er students, basically col-<lb />
lege freshman, and to train<lb />
teachers who are planning<lb />
to work on a two to four<lb />
year college program as<lb />
specialist.<lb />
Laughter said this year<lb />
approximately 200 fresh-<lb />
men are involved. The<lb />
particiapting freshmen are<lb />
Dart of the Special Studies<lb />
Program administered by<lb />
General College.<lb />
"The scope of the pro-<lb />
gram is to strengthen basic<lb />
reading skills and to help<lb />
them develop the most<lb />
efficient study proce-<lb />
dures, as well as speed-<lb />
reading techniques used in<lb />
university level work<lb />
When a student enters<lb />
the program, he or she is<lb />
pre-tested to determine the<lb />
overall reading skills a-<lb />
chievement level, weak-<lb />
nesses within those skills,<lb />
attitudes toward study,<lb />
study habits, and study<lb />
work skills (actual study<lb />
skills used).<lb />
The presently existing<lb />
program was designed by<lb />
Laughter and a team of<lb />
four teachers. Victoria<lb />
Westbrook, Nancy Tyson,<lb />
David Hamm,<lb />
Huffman.<lb />
and David one semester is required.<lb />
Laughter said each stu-<lb />
dent has a personal con-<lb />
ference with a teacher, and<lb />
together, they decide what<lb />
type of program is needed.<lb />
After the consultation,<lb />
the curriculum is complete-<lb />
ly individualized based on<lb />
the students' wants and<lb />
needs.<lb />
The university level<lb />
clinic providesa study skills<lb />
lab in addition to regular<lb />
instruction.<lb />
Laughter said that any-<lb />
one participating will be<lb />
able to use the labs by<lb />
Oct.4.<lb />
At the end of training,<lb />
each pupil is evaluated on<lb />
the advancement that has<lb />
been made.<lb />
The program operates<lb />
on a two-semester basis<lb />
according to Laughter, ana<lb />
If a pupil enters during<lb />
the fall term, and demon-<lb />
strates adequate develop-<lb />
ment in reading skills, he's<lb />
released from the program,<lb />
Laughter said.<lb />
"Twenty to thirty hours<lb />
is usually sufficient for the<lb />
university level student to<lb />
build his skills said<lb />
Laughter. "The second<lb />
semester is optional for<lb />
him<lb />
"If the student does not<lb />
show adequate growth, he<lb />
must return for more train-<lb />
ing. Indepth training is<lb />
given in addition to what is<lb />
taught the previous sem-<lb />
ester<lb />
A similar program is<lb />
operated simultaneously<lb />
with the hearing impaired<lb />
students.<lb />
"Any regular student<lb />
who wishes to discuss his<lb />
reading andor study prob-<lb />
lems should contact me<lb />
said Laughter.<lb />
The materials used in<lb />
the university level have<lb />
been specially developed<lb />
by Laughter and her staff.<lb />
The summer clinic is<lb />
designed specifically to<lb />
provide diagnostic clinical<lb />
training for in-service tea-<lb />
chers (employed by school<lb />
system).<lb />
The in-service teachers<lb />
are introduced to special<lb />
instructional techniques<lb />
used only with severe read-<lb />
ing disability cases.<lb />
The training is applied<lb />
in laboratory work with<lb />
students in grades 1-12,<lb />
who have the disability.<lb />
The director has to<lb />
certify that the student<lb />
can do what he should and<lb />
at what level, said Laugh-<lb />
ter.<lb />
r1t ei tl noltnn-vjih lt<lb />
Every teacher must<lb />
complete a 6-hour se-<lb />
quence, and is then eval-<lb />

"The students come<lb />
from all over Eastern North<lb />
Carolina said Laughter.<lb />
An exit criteria is re-<lb />
quired for reading speciali-<lb />

Every student, then, is<lb />
evaluated by Laughter.<lb />
Such an evaluation is used<lb />
by the state of N.C. to<lb />
determine what teacher<lb />
shall be granted certifi-<lb />
cation for reading speciali-<lb />

"The outlook is ex-<lb />

He's always performing<lb />
Kreskin:<lb />
By STEVE BACHNER<lb />
Trends Editor<lb />
What is the secret, the mystery, of a successful<lb />
former? Well, according to this generation's only<lb />
xessful hypnotist (he prefers the appellation "mental-<lb />
The Amazing Kreskin, there is no mystery at all<lb />
Exclusive attention to the audience is very important<lb />
Not ngis so flatter.ng as that. In this sense, Kreskin is an<lb />
extremely outward performer.<lb />
As a mentalist Kreskin invests more creative vigor<lb />
n audience participation than any other entertainer. Small<lb />
nder that the most talked about portion of his stage<lb />
ow !he second half in which Kreskin utilizes his<lb />
astounding power of suggesion to overcome his partici-<lb />
ts. requires the greatest number of volunteers.<lb />
s gift for getting co-operation affords him the<lb />
?cessary means to alternately invigorate an audience and<lb />
put them at ease.<lb />
Physically, Kreskin is a small man but his stage<lb />
resence describes a man of uncalculable proportions.<lb />
f-stage his disposition changes very little. He is<lb />
rgetic. wide-eyed,and alert.<lb />
,reskin did some 500 shows during his world tour last<lb />
He has made numerous television appearances<lb />
eluding 80 guest spots on The Tonight Show) and has<lb />
?cently published a book about his experiences called The<lb />
azing World of Kreskin,<lb />
The following interview was hastily conducted about an<lb />
our after his performance at the Mendenhall Student<lb />
iter Kreskin's road manager has just informed us that<lb />
will be touring until May of '79 and that they will be<lb />
eaving for New Jersey at 6 the following morning.<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: Before we get started, will you be<lb />
king any television appearances in the near future?<lb />
Kresk "I've already taped a (Mike) Douglas show.<lb />
- 'or it on a Tuesday in the afternoon. I don't know what<lb />
lay but you've got to see the show. The guests were<lb />
i M oreno and Anthony Newley. She go scared because I<lb />
ed an idea that she could not escape from throughout<lb />
entire demonstration<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: understand that you became<lb />
ested in magic at the age of nine.<lb />
Kreskin: Well, magic was about five or six. I was<lb />
'ormmg as a magician when I was nine years old. I was<lb />
a magic show back then. It's an interesting thing<lb />
third grade teacher. Miss Curtis, gave me<lb />
iission to perform every Friday for fifteen minutes in<lb />
And everything I did I made up. I never saw a<lb />
: an until I was in my mid teens. But in the back of<lb />
I think because my imagemy conceptof what I<lb />
: mg to do was the Mandrake character in the comic<lb />
did have a definite notion of where I was going.<lb />
Mandrake really wasn't a magician in spite of movies<lb />
ave been made and so forth he really wasn't a<lb />
magician. If you read him carefully you'll find that he was a<lb />
er who would gesture hypnotically and things would<lb />
en So m a sense, even then, I was dealing with the<lb />
ind always I was searching for things that I could do<lb />
area of the mind. Some of the things that I do today I<lb />
jght of doing when I was a kid.<lb />
Now when I was about eleven I was performing and<lb />
- then I was known as a magician and a hypnotist. The<lb />
. York Times did an article on me and I was supposed to<lb />
e youngest in the world. Interestingly enough, even<lb />
ugh I have changed my whole concept and really no<lb />
onger believe in any way. shape or form that there is a<lb />
pnotic trance, by the time I had graduated from high<lb />
school practically all my teachers had been volunteers on<lb />
stage and that's pretty unusual for a kid of 15, 16 years old<lb />
to have them volunteer as subjects.<lb />
Then I found out much later that teachers that I'd had<lb />
grade school and junior high had sent letters to the high<lb />
school faculty that my abilities were to be encouraged and<lb />
cultivated So I never knew that; they had kept that from<lb />
me<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: How did your parents; immediate<lb />
family react to all of this7<lb />
Kreskin My father encouraged it. He was enamored<lb />
with a man named Thurston who was a great stage<lb />
musician and a much better magician than Houdini ever<lb />
28 September 1978 FOUNTAINHEAD Page 7<lb />
'amazing<lb />
was even though Houdini really wasn't known as a<lb />
magician in his life. My father was very encouraging. My<lb />
mother was quite frightened. My father's side of the family<lb />
was very encouraging and I had an aunt whom I did a show<lb />
for every Friday night for about four years<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: In what capacity were you<lb />
performing during this period?<lb />
Kreskin: "I was performing then as a magician and<lb />
then when I was in my teens I was performing as a magician<lb />
and a hypnotist and I was really interested in various forms<lb />
of extra-sensory perception. You see, the thing is, I had no<lb />
standard from which to work.<lb />
"When I was in the fourth grade, the adult department<lb />
of my library, in Caldwell, which I lived across the street<lb />
from, gave me special permission to use the library. So by<lb />
the time I was in the eighth grade I had read every book in<lb />
the psychology and sociology departments of the library.<lb />
They had extraordinarily good departments in these fields.<lb />
The librarians would buy books basically because they felt<lb />
they would be good for me and they would put them in their<lb />
respective sections<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: In the course of your reading did<lb />
you ever concentrate on any particular group of people?<lb />
Kreskin: I was very interested in the lives of famous<lb />
people from every walk o life: Einstein, Edison, show<lb />
people. I wanted to know what made them function so<lb />
extraordinarily in their specialization as well as what made<lb />
them communicate so well with others. I was interested in<lb />
theevangelists; I was interested in people like Arthur<lb />
Godfrey.<lb />
"I was very much interested in him because he, in my<lb />
childhood, was constantly being made the subject of cover<lb />
stories in national publications. You have to realize that<lb />
while Jacqueline Kennedy was for years on the cover of<lb />
most magazines, Arthur Godfrey was on the cover of more<lb />
magazines, as Edward R. M urrow the newspaper columnist<lb />
said, than any other person in the forties and fifties and I<lb />
wanted to know how he had this ability to communicate so<lb />
well. Now psychologists wrote about him in many<lb />
publications in the early fifties and said that Arthur Godfrey<lb />
was a hypnotist but never knew it<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: So when we say that a performer<lb />
has "charisma" or "presence we might also include a<lb />
clause about some form of hypnotic phenomenon?<lb />
Kreskin: "That's right. But not hypnosis. The<lb />
phenomenon that we describe as hypnosis really isn't<lb />
related to any form of trance or trance-like state. It's an<lb />
ability to tap or create deep feeling from a suggestion. The<lb />
most effective form of It really defies description. It is the<lb />
kind of ability that has no real technique. It seems to come<lb />
from the person. Today we call it charisma. In the thirties<lb />
my father told me that certain people, people in show<lb />
business, had an "it" quality. It has been called many<lb />
things. In the fifties it was called a chemistry. No one really<lb />
knows what it is.<lb />
"Unfortunately, it is almost like humor. As Steve Allen<lb />
said, when you try to write about humor and analyze it, it is<lb />
no longer funny Some people try the same lines and just<lb />
don't get the same response. But because I had no<lb />
restriction and no formula and no structure, I found my own<lb />
way. I didn't know how to do what I did because I never saw<lb />
anybody do what I did. I was very lucky because I had<lb />
nothing to imitate but fiction and fantasy<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: Were you ever looked upon as<lb />
"different" or get more than your share of ribbing as a<lb />
boy?<lb />
Kreskin: "No I didn't because my friends, however I<lb />
got them to do it, would play games with me that dealt with<lb />
this and in some of the games where we used to play there<lb />
would always be an interlude where I was performing and<lb />
imagining that I was performing before a very large<lb />
audience. I was always doing thought reading experiments.<lb />
When I was seven years old I mastered a very interesting<lb />
experiment which a friend of mine, one Walter B. Gibson<lb />
who knew Houdini intimately and Thurston and Blackstone,<lb />
said that it was a test that had been tried some years ago.<lb />
"I would take ten cards and I would lay them face down<lb />
on a table. I would have relatives come and stand on my<lb />
right and just think of any card and all I would do was move<lb />
I<lb />
1 v .v- t 5u<lb />
THE AMAZING KRESKIN performed astounding feats of<lb />
mental telepathy and suggestion at his appearance Tuesday<lb />
my hand back and forth over the cards. After about twenty<lb />
seconds my hand would start to dip over the card that they<lb />
were thinking of. I was doing this when I was seven years<lb />
old<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: Can you remember your first<lb />
experience with this type of phenomenon7<lb />
Kreskin: "Yes. I believe I was about eight years old.<lb />
The first time it happened that I didn't think it was a game,<lb />
that I was sure it was pure thought transference. I<lb />
remember that I was at a party with a group of my friends<lb />
and I said 'think of a movie you saw in the past year' and a<lb />
really uncanny thing happened. I called out each of the<lb />
movies that each of them was thinking of. But I wasn't<lb />
surprised. And, I don't know, after awhile they got used to<lb />
the fact that I could do this. M y immediate family was quite<lb />
surprised!<lb />
"Still, they didn't treat me as strange and consequently<lb />
it did not put me in an uncomfortable light. When I went to<lb />
Bethlehem, my first shows were in my aunt's home in<lb />
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, my aunt would invite some forty<lb />
or fifty people over and they would sit there and see me do a<lb />
two hour program. By the time I was twelve I was<lb />
performing before audiences as large as 300 people'<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: Can you ever think of any time that<lb />
you haven't been performing in one capacity or another?<lb />
Kreskin: "I can't think of any time that I haven't felt as<lb />
if I've been on stage<lb />
night in Mendenhall before a crowd of more than 8O0<lb />
For a pictorial review, see p 10. Photoby John H Grogan<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD: Have you learned anything from<lb />
your experiences as a mentalist that might benefit others?<lb />
Kreskin: "I'll tell you something, which I think people<lb />
should remember no matter what kind of work they are<lb />
going into. I want to make this point especially for people<lb />
who are going into communications. Something has come<lb />
out of all of this. I have never said this before in my life. I<lb />
am not a nightclub performer; I am not a university<lb />
performer; I am not a stage performer; I am not a televiston<lb />
performer and I have to say. and I don't mean this<lb />
egotistically. I have learned to apply my art to any audience<lb />
conceivable. Whether it be an audience of the president and<lb />
his family, an audience of the queen of England. 8000<lb />
people in North Dakota, or the private party of Jonathan<lb />
Winters or Jill St. John. I know of no audience that this<lb />
doesn't work with and it no longer worries me<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD And you feel that all these qualities<lb />
are inherent in other people but they lack the knowledge<lb />
necessary to tap them7<lb />
Kreskin: "Yes. but I can't train people to become a<lb />
mentalist. I can train people to tap their inner minds. I<lb />
believe that the only way one can ever fully live up to his<lb />
potential is to have a mistress in his life and I don't mean<lb />
that the way it sounds. What I mean is that one must devote<lb />
hisentire life tothis mistress and, for me. this mistress has<lb />
become my work<lb />

Tar River Poetry an 'impeccable journal of poems'<lb />
By JEFF ROLLINS<lb />
Assistant Trends Editor<lb />
Dr Peter Makuck has edited an impeccable journal of<lb />
poetry. Both in its literary quality and its handsome format<lb />
Tar River Poetry stands on a par with most small magazines<lb />
of poetry in the country.<lb />
Poems by William Stafford, Lyn Lifshin, LukeWhisnant<lb />
and Susan Fromberg Schaeffer highlight this Falls issue of<lb />
Tar River Poetry (formerly Tar River Poets).<lb />
This semester's edition features poetry by such<lb />
nationally prominent poets as Stafford and Schaeffer along<lb />
with excellent work by Greenville and East Carolina poets,<lb />
Luke Whisnant, Gerda Nischan and Brenda Little among<lb />
others.<lb />
Stafford's poems begin this season's selection. His<lb />
"Flaubert at Croisset" delves with marvelous insight into<lb />
the way the French master must have felt while living in his<lb />
provincial Croisset and writing his masterpiece.<lb />
The wind would veer, and over the sound<lb />
I would hear their talk; so many slant<lb />
remarks, the slur. Sometimes I died,<lb />
being one of them-sometimes it was all<lb />
I could bear They would fight over women; they<lb />
stumbled when they thought; they cheered diches.<lb />
I carried home to my room every night<lb />
a treasure-the residue of stupid encounters<lb />
all over town, and wrote them like<lb />
a cage around a pair of hopeful<lb />
like me. Bovary, I called them-blundering<lb />
because one believed patterns alone<lb />
would work people say it is so,<lb />
it is soI'm Charles Bovary<lb />
and happily married and the other also<lb />
myself-craving everything good,<lb />
sense-drugged, lost, impatient. Often<lb />
often, listing to them I died:<lb />
I died for every word.<lb />
In his "With Thanks for the Gift of a Jar of Patchouli"<lb />
Stafford communicates the memories and sensations<lb />
awakened in him by the scent of patchouli. "Never" and<lb />
Forever are concepts in love that are as ephemeral as the<lb />
scent of patchouli given off by the jar that his lady has<lb />
accidently left at his house.<lb />
Stafford deals with the passage of time and generations<lb />
in his "Crossing the Campus with a New Generation This<lb />
sensitive poem begins, "Practising how to lose and<lb />
continues on to examine the inevitable sense of having to<lb />
"leave home" continually throughout life.<lb />
Brenda Little, a senior in the writing program at East<lb />
Carolina, has three poems in Tar River Poetry. Her "Pt. of<lb />
View" examines the situation of a girl who has an unwanted<lb />
pregnancy.<lb />

Mrs. Little is a poet with a remarkable eye for<lb />
significant detail, as becomes obvious in her "Distant<lb />
Thunder" which is a poem after the famous painting by<lb />
Andrew Wyeth of a woman lying in a Maine field looking up<lb />
at her farmhouse in the distance.<lb />
In her "At the Public Burying Grounds in Tarboro"<lb />
Mrs. Little deals with the sad inevitability of death and<lb />
relates these old graves to the new ones that will be dug for<lb />
herself and her husband.<lb />
LukeWhisnant is a senior in the writing program at East<lb />
Carolina and is currently editor of the The Rebel, East<lb />
Carolina's literary-arts magazine. He is also a young man<lb />
who writes poetry with surprising grace and facility. His<lb />
poems elucidate the paradoxical beauty pathos of life.<lb />
Whisnant writes a lyrical poem of love in his "Sails<lb />
using a sail-boat and its journey as a metaphor for a love<lb />
relationship. In "The Moment" the speaker catches a fish<lb />
and weighs "the moment which hooked us examining the<lb />
paradox between man's dominion of the animals and the<lb />
innate cruelty of killing. Somehow, one feels that deep in<lb />
the poem there is a statement about human relationships as<lb />
well.<lb />
Whisnant's "Snowblind" is one of the finest, most<lb />
well-executed poems in the book, a startingly bright vision<lb />
of the depth of the soul.<lb />

Clouseau returns in The Revenge of the Pink Panther<lb />
By DA RREN BERGSTEIN<lb />
Assistant Trends Editor<lb />
Just when you thought<lb />
it was safe to go back to the<lb />
movies<lb />
Cute that the producers<lb />
of Revenge of the Pink<lb />
Panther should use that<lb />
particular line. Could it be<lb />
coinoendental that it truly<lb />
applies?<lb />
Well, applicable or not,<lb />
Revenge of the Pink Pant-<lb />
her is one helluva funny<lb />
film, not to mention a<lb />
helluva lot of fun. Peter<lb />
Sellers once agin provides<lb />
the laughs as the bumbling<lb />
yet brilliant Chief Inspector<lb />
Clouseau, outdoing himself<lb />
in this, the fifth entry in the<lb />
Pink panther series.<lb />
This time, mobsters are<lb />
out to get our hero, trying<lb />
to eliminate the man who<lb />
escaped 16 assassination<lb />
attempts. They are elimina-<lb />
ting him for the sake of<lb />
proving their respectability<lb />
to a big gang boss in New<lb />
York.<lb />
Clouseau manages to<lb />
escape from the first two<lb />
tries, the second time un-<lb />
knowingly clubbing a<lb />
muscleman who he as-<lb />
sumes is his inscrutable<lb />
manservant Cato, who is<lb />
always planning surprises<lb />
on the Parisian detective.<lb />
Finally the mobsters<lb />
think they have indeed<lb />
ridden themselves of<lb />
Clouseau when it is report-<lb />
ed that his car mysteriously<lb />
struck a tree and exploded.<lb />
Even Chief Inspector<lb />
Dyrefuss, who had been<lb />
committed to a psychiatric<lb />
center because of<lb />
Clouseau's ineptness, is<lb />
overcome with relief when<lb />
he learns of Clouseau's<lb />
"death<lb />
What did happend was<lb />
that a transvestite had<lb />
hijacked the detective's car<lb />
and was gunned down by<lb />
the mobsters instead of<lb />
Clouseau. The inspector<lb />
has a hard time explaining<lb />
this to police and the<lb />
medical authorities when<lb />
they apprehend him and try<lb />
to oommit him also.<lb />
While running away<lb />
from the authorities,<lb />
Clouseau avoids their cap-<lb />
ture by hiding in Dreyfuss'<lb />
room, the former inspector<lb />
unaware of Clouseau's pre-<lb />
sence. When he does find<lb />
him, however, it is by<lb />
opening the closet door.<lb />
Clouseau waved at him and<lb />
smiles; Drey - promptly<lb />
rolles his eyes and faints.<lb />
PETER SELLERS IS,Clouseau again in "The Revenge of<lb />
the Pink Panther<lb />
As in the other films in<lb />
the series, Sellers' Clouseau<lb />
is a parody of itself, slap-<lb />
stick while trying not to be.<lb />
Sellers' comedy, a la "The<lb />
Three Stooges is achiev-<lb />
ed via pratfalls, gangsters<lb />
flying through windows and<lb />
walls, or Cato being yanked<lb />
off his feet and sent sprawl-<lb />
ing into a river.<lb />
While there is nothing<lb />
wrong with this, Sellers<lb />
seems to have to rely on<lb />
this to make this film work<lb />
and that shouldn't be.<lb />
What does alleviate it,<lb />
however, is his irreparable<lb />
fumbling of worlds. "I'm<lb />
Cheif Inspector Clouseau of<lb />
the Leer he says to Dyan<lb />
Cannon - during a break in<lb />
the murder scenes, switch-<lb />
ing to a littie quiet scene.<lb />
You can guess what<lb />
happens next.<lb />
"Of the Leer?" she asks<lb />
perplexed.<lb />
"Correct he acknow-<lb />
ledges. "Of the Leer<lb />
"The what?" She is<lb />
now confused. "The Leer?<lb />
What is the Leer?"<lb />
Of course Clouseau<lb />
means the lawand he doe<lb />
it again when a bomb jS<lb />
deposited in his lap. He is in<lb />
a disguise shop, and the<lb />
proprietor asks him, "What<lb />
have you got there, Inspec-<lb />
tor?"<lb />
"A bermb he answers<lb />
"A what?"<lb />
"A bermb. A bermb,<lb />
you fool! A bermb<lb />
"A what?" the proprie-<lb />
tor asks againthen he<lb />
notices the bomb "Ah A<lb />
bomb! Throw it away<lb />
The last 45 minutes of<lb />
the film marks its highest<lb />
tone. Clouseau poses as the<lb />
New York Mob boas in an<lb />
attempt to capture the man<lb />
responsible to trying to<lb />
have him killed. Dow ha<lb />
thwart it. and indeed capt-<lb />
ure the perpetrators? You<lb />
could say thatbut it's not<lb />
quite that simple.<lb />
DePatie and Frelengs<lb />
animation sequence for the<lb />
opening titles is once again<lb />
marvelous. Matches with<lb />
Henry Mancini's jazz score.<lb />
See CLOUSEAU. p. 9<lb />

The lenses which cover his eyes<lb />

Sun flares off the glaze of the trail<lb />
so bright it could blaze down the i. ees<lb />

The boy who has never seen snow<lb />

a hundred times brighter than summer<lb />
lifts off his glasses to see<lb />
the side of a mountain afire<lb />
and the trees in the sun doing nothing<lb />
but shining and slowly refreeling:<lb />
branches have coated themselves<lb />
with perfect shells of ice<lb />
which rattle and chime in the wind<lb />
until the whole mountain is singing<lb />
Slitting his eyes to cut down<lb />
the acres of snow-brightened light,<lb />

he knows that the risk is no greater<lb />
than the need to keep looking into<lb />
the utter aloneness of ice.<lb />
The Eskimo tell of a man<lb />

when they found him.<lb />
His vision returned one night<lb />
in the artic dark of an igloo.<lb />
Only that man could know<lb />
how far north in your life you can go<lb />
until eyes begin to burn out<lb />
from looking too long at nothing;<lb />
why a boy has sat down among shells<lb />
of ice at the edge of a cliff<lb />
he has thrown the green glasses over.<lb />
Gerda Nischan's poetry makes two admirable appear-<lb />
ances in Tar River Poetry. "Then" is a poem about two<lb />
young women who are friends and the turn their<lb />
relationship takes. "Your House" speaks of a house that is<lb />
haunted with the ghosts of bitterness, hate and divorce.<lb />
Susan Fromberg Schaeffer has published four volumes<lb />
of poetry. Her Granite Lady was nominated for a National<lb />
Book Award and her first novel, Falling was one of Time<lb />

For those of you who<lb />
are still here. Farmer's<lb />
work has punched it into<lb />
new directions for over 26<lb />
vears He was the origina-<lb />
tor of explicit eroticism in a<lb />
previously neutered genre<lb />
Novels and short stories,<lb />
such as The Lovers Flesh,<lb />
The inside Outside. Image<lb />
of the Beast and Blown<lb />
ave all elicited controversy<lb />
within and outside of the<lb />
spec fiction field.<lb />
He is an extremely<lb />
steal bookmaker, and<lb />
some of his most cerebral<lb />
moments are encoded in<lb />
the language and processes<lb />
of sexuality. There are male<lb />
sexual symbols, Lord<lb />
"vger female sexual sym-<lb />
bols r'Mother" and "The<lb />
Shadow of Space") and<lb />
sexless sexual symbols,<lb />
( A Bowl Bigger than<lb />
Earth")<lb />
Hot stuff? Certainly.<lb />
But there is much more to<lb />
Farmer than sex. Of course<lb />
he is a nasty old man, but<lb />
what seperates him from<lb />
other nasty old men is that<lb />
he is a multi-leveled writer,<lb />
the fun kid, whose stories<lb />
one can peel like an onion<lb />
to reveal deeper meanings.<lb />
 n his mainstream novel<lb />
Free and The Night he<lb />
demonstrated his belief<lb />
that sex and religion are<lb />
two sides of the same coin.<lb />
This theme, in various<lb />
permutations, has surfaced<lb />
again and again in his<lb />
work.<lb />
SUPERHEROES<lb />
Farmer's accounts of<lb />
pulp-type superheros de-<lb />
pict a personified fusion<lb />
between godhood (super-<lb />
heroes and superheroines<lb />
are always well-endowed<lb />
and anxious to prove it). A<lb />
typical Farmer hero could<lb />
be envisioned as a sex-<lb />
crazed Batman with a halo.<lb />
As Leslie Fiedler has<lb />
pointed out in his study of<lb />
Philip Farmer, his heroes<lb />
are more often blown by<lb />
their own men that laid.<lb />
Farmer seems to see oral<lb />
sex as an apolcalyptic real-<lb />
ization of the sexual<lb />
regions.<lb />
Macrocosmicaliy, there<lb />
is the River world series:<lb />
it's basic piotline is that<lb />
everyone whoever lived and<lb />
died on Earth is resurrected<lb />
long the banks of a never-<lb />
ending river. You can walk<lb />
30 feet on the Riverworld<lb />
and see a 16th century<lb />
aborigine, a 12th century<lb />
Eskimo (if they were<lb />
around back then), a<lb />
Spanish musician, and<lb />
Dwight D. Eisenhower.<lb />
SEX AND RELIGION<lb />
Here sex and religion<lb />
meet with a frenzy - an<lb />
afterlife the ultimate goal<lb />
among true believers of<lb />
most western religions, is<lb />
inhabited by all these<lb />
people, saints as well as<lb />
sinners, who spend the first<lb />
night of their resurrection<lb />
engaged in a planetwide<lb />
orgy. (Man with all his<lb />
basic drives, is admitted<lb />
through the pearly gates).<lb />
This plot, and most of<lb />
his other storylines, comes<lb />
dangerously close to<lb />
garbagehood. What makes<lb />
Farmer such a skilled word-<lb />
smith is that he can tread in<lb />
literary trash and come out<lb />
smelling like a fresh bottle<lb />
of after-shave.<lb />
Farmer often plays with<lb />
sex and religion on a<lb />
subliminal level, interweav-<lb />
ing them into a homogen-<lb />
ous fabric that serves as the<lb />
curtain behind the stage.<lb />

There has been talk<lb />

He pointed out that the<lb />

Middle Ages and the<lb />
Renaissance period, and<lb />
that even of the size,<lb />
location and boundaries of<lb />
modern nations are the<lb />
results of a chain of events<lb />
which began during these<lb />
crucial centuries.<lb />
"Modern education has<lb />
tended toward specializat-<lb />
ion in one field, producing<lb />
graduates with a rather<lb />
narrow vision of the<lb />
world he noted.<lb />
"An interdisciplinary<lb />
program such as this will<lb />
involve the student in a<lb />
learning process which<lb />
sheds light on the overlap-<lb />
ping influences people and<lb />

In this program, a stud-<lb />

Modern finance can be<lb />

early capitalism, and to-<lb />

are traceable to such med-<lb />

A special seminar<lb />
course at the end of the<lb />
program enables the stud-<lb />

he or she has learned and to<lb />
pursue subjects of particu-<lb />

"In addition to course<lb />

said Herndon.<lb />
"Right now, we are<lb />

"And we also intend to<lb />
sponsor re-enactments of<lb />
medieval fairs and festivals<lb />
here on campus, complete<lb />
with the costumes, music,<lb />
games, ceremonies and en-<lb />
tertainment typical of the<lb />
times he said.<lb />
entative of this, and part-<lb />
icularly interesting because<lb />
on this same unconscious<lb />
plane, the desire for<lb />
sexualreligious fulfillment<lb />
becomes the desire for<lb />
conquest of the same.<lb />
The hero is a detective<lb />
named Harold Childe (Yep.<lb />
Lord Byron). He looks like<lb />
Byron, and even walks with<lb />
a limp. He is drawn, while<lb />
investigating a murder,<lb />
into a cult of extraterres-<lb />
trials with superior powers.<lb />
These powers enable<lb />
them to adopt human form<lb />
and behave like sexual<lb />
perverts with some pretty<lb />
bizarre twists. (Again: Far-<lb />
mer is one of the few<lb />
writers who can get away<lb />
with such a stupid plot.)<lb />
HAROLD CHILDE<lb />
Childe discovers the<lb />
nature of these beings, and<lb />
loathesthem, tries to whip<lb />
them at their own game. In<lb />
the Farmerian context, this<lb />
is rather like a man becom-<lb />
ing a priest in order to<lb />
defeat his god.<lb />
There is an interplay of<lb />
sex and religion here, in<lb />
that the creatues are dec-<lb />
isively attracted to Childe's<lb />
Byronic looks, and their<lb />
vast superiority over, and<lb />
influence in the life of the<lb />
unfortunate detective. He<lb />
fears them, but pursues<lb />
them, not to understand<lb />
but to destroy.<lb />
The god(s) also take on<lb />
the form of the enemy in<lb />
the Riverworld novels: Bur-<lb />
ton and his shipmates have<lb />
no love for the ethicals<lb />
and seek them out. But, in<lb />
keeping with the major<lb />
body of Farmer's work,<lb />
they seek to understand<lb />
rather than defeat, though<lb />
they are somewhat biased<lb />
from the beginning.<lb />
At his best, Philip Jose'<lb />
Farmer is a barroom brawl<lb />
of a writer, capable of<lb />
smashing the reader over<lb />
the head with a beer-bottle<lb />
many times in the course of<lb />
a novel. He doesn't take<lb />
himself too seriously, which<lb />
is important in contempor-<lb />
ary fiction. Unpredictable,<lb />
and sometimes eccentric to<lb />
the point of infuriating his<lb />
readers, he is an establish-<lb />
ed 'experimental author,<lb />
and much of his writing is<lb />
not unlike thinking aloud<lb />
(though the fact that he has<lb />
had to write frequently, and<lb />
under pressure, may have<lb />
something to do with this).<lb />
Farmer is inconsistent<lb />
and knows it - revels in it,<lb />
in fact. He is prone to throw<lb />
away some excellent ideas<lb />
(the kind many authors wait<lb />
around for years to hit<lb />
them), into a junkheap of a<lb />
book, and call it a literary<lb />
joke. He has even satirized<lb />
his own more serious work.<lb />
Hisrep doesn't suffer how-<lb />
ever. His readership has<lb />
come to expect this sort of<lb />
thing from him.<lb />

ECU returns home to face Movin9 Mavs<lb />
ByCHARLESCHANDLER<lb />
Assistant Sports Editor<lb />
For the first time this season ECU head coach Pat Dye<lb />
can brag about the Pirate offense, simply because of the<lb />
irates 38-9 shelling of Southwestern Louisiana last<lb />
Saturday night, that included a 35 point first half.<lb />
I think we have finally got our point across to the<lb />
offensive team said Dye at his weekly press luncheon<lb />
Wednesday -l think it all started in the Carolina game. We<lb />
seemed to gam confidence after that<lb />
After three games of missed assignments, fumbles, and<lb />
other erroneous mistakes. Dye said the Pirates finally got<lb />
good execution in the USL game.<lb />
Offensively, most all of our players graded out winning<lb />
performances Dye said. This was the first time all year<lb />
that our offensive backs have blocked well. We looked like<lb />
the old ECU again. We hadn't gone out and hit like we<lb />
should For the first time, we actually had fun playing<lb />
offer.ae<lb />
Dye praised several individuals in the Pirate backfield.<lb />
Eddie Hicks was outstanding noted Dye. "His blocking<lb />
was superb. He graded out an 86 blocking rating. Mike<lb />
Hawkins has been a pleasant surprise. He's playing really<lb />
good football. Hesdoing it all, blocking and running<lb />
The superb performance of quarterback Leander Green<lb />
was also praised by Dye. "Leander had by far his best game<lb />

Plenty of Wishbone in Ficklen<lb />
TEXAS-ARLINGTON and ECU are only two of the nine<lb />
schools in me NCAA this year who operate from the<lb />
Wishbone Although the Movin'Mavs have not won a game<lb />
his season they are currently ranked 14th in the nation in<lb />
rushing with an impressive 264.5 yard average per game.<lb />
TneJvlavs are also averaging 103 yards through the air and<lb />
have produced at least 21 points in every game this season<lb />
except agajnst West Texas State when they only scored 10<lb />
points. Quarterback Roy Dewalt makes the offense go. The<lb />
junior from Houston, Tex, has rushed for 302 yards this<lb />
season and has passed for another 383 yards including two<lb />
touchdowns.<lb />
The PIRATES and the Mavs have one common<lb />
opponent among themselves this season, the Ragin Cajuns<lb />
from Southwestern Louisiana. ECU lost to USL 9-7 late last<lb />
season, but returned to Lafayette last week and destroyed<lb />
the Cajuns 38-20 last year The Mavs will face USL Oct. 14<lb />
at home in Arlington.<lb />
ECU SPLIT END Terry Gallaher continues to rewrite<lb />
Pirate receiving records. Last week against Southwestern<lb />
Louisiana. Gallaher caught his first two touchdown passes<lb />
of the season but the two TD receptions were his 12th and<lb />
13th career grabs which breaks the all-time ECU record.<lb />
The Warner Robbins. Ga. native already holds the all-time<lb />
receiving yardage record which now stands at 1,351 yards<lb />
and has an excellent chance of catching Dick Corrada's all<lb />
time record of 79 receptions in a career. Gallaher currently<lb />
has 61 career catches.<lb />
QUARTERBACK LEANDER GREEN, had his finest<lb />
game of the season last week against USL. Green threw<lb />
three touchdown passes and directed the Pirates offense<lb />
flawlessly "Leander had by far his best game of the<lb />
season said head coach Pat Dye. "And as I look back, I<lb />
think he might have had his best game at ECU last week<lb />
Once again. Green hit his old high school teammate Billy<lb />
Ray Washington for one of ECU'S touchdowns. Green has<lb />
now completed 16 of 39 passes for 316 yards and four<lb />
touchdowns this season.<lb />
ANOTHER PLEASANT SURPRISE in Saturday's<lb />
contest against Southwestern Louisiana was the play of<lb />
safety Gerald Hall. Kail returned four punts for 108 yards<lb />
against the Cajuns and played well in the secondary. The<lb />
Edenton native returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown in<lb />
the second quarter but the play was called back because of a<lb />
clipping penalty on the three yard line.<lb />
TEXAS-ARLINGTON head coach Bud Elliott had an<lb />
interesting comment about his Mavs at his weekly press<lb />
conference Monday. "There seems to be a fine line<lb />
between winning and losing for us. A winner thinks about<lb />
what he can do to his opponent, but we seem to be worrying<lb />
about what the opponent is going to do to us Elliott now<lb />
in his fifth season at Texas-Arlington has a 15-33 overall<lb />
record<lb />
THE WEEK'S BEST QUOTE comes from Georgia<lb />
Sports Information Director Dan Magill. Magill was<lb />
recently talking about a hiighly touted prep recruit who<lb />
couldn't get into school because of his grades. "The kid<lb />
could do everything with the ball Magill said. "Except<lb />

Campbell College<lb />
By DAVID MARIEADY<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Hoping to avenge last<lb />
year's, four overtime, 2-1<lb />
loss to Campbell College,<lb />
ECU'S soccer team will<lb />
again meet the Camels<lb />
Saturday afternoon at<lb />
MingesSoccer Field. Game<lb />
time is slated for 2 p.m.<lb />
The Pirate soccer team<lb />
will battle a well establish-<lb />
ed Camel soccer team<lb />
whose overall record last<lb />
year was 7-7. The Pirates<lb />
hope to tack a victory onto<lb />
their disappointing 1-3-1<lb />
start which includes losses<lb />
to Duke, N.C. State, and<lb />
highly touted UNC. '<lb />
ECU head coach Brad<lb />
Smith will rely heavily on<lb />
an inexperienced, yet high-<lb />
ly talented group of fresh-<lb />
men led by Brad Winched.<lb />
Winchell now holds the<lb />
all-time record for most<lb />
goals scored in a single<lb />
game after his four goal<lb />
tally against Catawba.<lb />
Other standouts in recent<lb />
games include; Jeff Karp-<lb />
ovich, Kevin Tyus, Jeff<lb />
Kluger, Duane Bailey, and<lb />
Phil Martin. The Pirate<lb />
soccer team is hoping to<lb />
bounce back from a heart<lb />
breaking 3-2 overtime loss<lb />
to UNC-Charlotte last Sun-<lb />
day.<lb />
"We've got to put to<lb />
ball in their net said<lb />
Smith, "and keep it out of<lb />
ours<lb />
A total of 13 goals have<lb />
been scored by the Pirates<lb />
this season and 17 have<lb />
been scored against them.<lb />
of the year Dye said He was as respoonsible as anybody<lb />
for the great offensive showing. His throwing was near<lb />
perfect. He is a super athlete. The way he can run the<lb />
option, and throw the ball makes our offense tick. When<lb />
he's playing as well as he did Saturday, we're hard to<lb />
stop<lb />
The Pirate offensive line in the USL game also was<lb />
pleasing to the fifth year Pirate coach. He said the entire<lb />
line graded out winning performances, while playing their<lb />
best game of the season.<lb />
Dye had special praise for guard Mitchell Johnson.<lb />
"Mitchell did a super job said Dye. "He's come a long<lb />
way since he's been here. He is the perfect example of what<lb />
hard work will do. M itchell also exemplifies how rewarding<lb />
coaching can be for me, watching an individual grow from a<lb />
below average player who had excuses for everything to a<lb />
super offensive lineman with no excuses whatsoever. Right<lb />
now, Mitchell is as outstanding an offensive lineman as we<lb />
have on the squad<lb />
Dye continued his praise for the offense by noting that<lb />
ends Terry Gallaher and Billy Ray Washington both had<lb />
their best performances of the season Saturday.<lb />
The Pirate defense, which has played superbly all<lb />
season, was not forgotten by Dye. "We had yet another<lb />
great game defensively said Dye. "The entire line played<lb />
well. Oliver Felton and John Morris had an excellent game.<lb />
And Mike Brewington did it again. He seems to get better<lb />
and better. He's probably the most physical linebacker<lb />
we've ever had here. Gerald Hall (safety) played like his old<lb />
self again<lb />
Dye mentioned that though the Pirate defense was not<lb />
loaded with superstars, they had become a good unit<lb />
because of togetherness.<lb />
The Pirate coach also said that the defense would have<lb />
to continue their stellar effort in the upcoming game this<lb />
Saturday against Texas-Arlington.<lb />
Texas-Arlington hasn't won yet, but they have a lot of <lb />
talented offensive people said Dye. "They have a great<lb />
quarterback, who can really run, and some excellent<lb />
offensive backs. Their offense is averaging 368 yards<lb />
per game. Their overall average per rush is 4.9 yards.<lb />
That's very impressive. The offensive line is big and strong.<lb />
They will def inately present us with some problems<lb />
"Defensively, they feel they have the three best<lb />
linebackers on any one team in Texas noted Dye. "The<lb />
defensive line is big and strong. We don't know what to<lb />
expect from them as they have to run against an option, like<lb />
we run. But I feel they surely have a capable defensive<lb />
football team<lb />
Dye said that he felt the Pirates needed to improve on<lb />
their punting and kick-off coverage before meeting Texas-<lb />
Arlington.<lb />

TERRY GALLAHER, LEANDER GREEN<lb />
ECU's Gallaher<lb />
continues record<lb />
touchdown pace Pirate defensive tackle<lb />
By SAM ROGERS<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
The University of<lb />
Texas-Arlington and ECU<lb />
have quite a few similar-<lb />
ities among themselves.<lb />
Both the Movin' Mavs and<lb />
the Pirates run the Wish-<lb />
bone and both teams have<lb />
compiled some impressive<lb />
offensive statistics during<lb />
their first four games.<lb />
Turnovers? Like ECU,<lb />
Texas-Arlington has pro-<lb />
duced plenty of them in just<lb />
four games. The Mavs have<lb />
fumbled the ball away 12<lb />
times this season and have<lb />
had three passes inter-<lb />
cepted while the .Pirates<lb />
have committed a whop-<lb />
ping total of 19 turnovers in<lb />
four games.<lb />
But the bottom line,<lb />
otherwise known as the<lb />
won- loss column is where<lb />
all similarities between the<lb />
Pirates and the Mavs a-<lb />
bruptly en.1s. ECU brings a<lb />
2-2 record into Saturday<lb />
night's contest while<lb />
Texas-Arlington is0-4.<lb />
Texas-Arlington lost to<lb />
Drake in its season opener<lb />
25-23 and dropped three<lb />
straight contests since<lb />
then. Last week the Mavs<lb />
went right down to the wire<lb />
against Louisiana Tech, but<lb />
once again turnovers cost<lb />
them a norrow 28-21 set-<lb />
back.<lb />
"We won another stati-<lb />
stical battle said Texas-<lb />
Arlington head coach Bud<lb />
Elliott at his weekly press<lb />
conference Monday after<lb />
noon. "We had more yards<lb />
on total offense and we held<lb />
Louisiana Tech to under<lb />
150 yards passing. But two<lb />
penalties really hurt us.<lb />
"And those turnovers<lb />
continue to plague us. It's<lb />
something we're going to<lb />
have to work on in practice<lb />
this week. But we have just<lb />
got to start winning. There<lb />
is nothing that we need<lb />
more right now<lb />
Probably eyen more<lb />
surprising about Texas-<lb />
Arlington's 0-4 record are<lb />
it's offensive statistics. The<lb />
Mavs rank 14th in the<lb />
nation in rushing with, 264.5<lb />
yards per game and are<lb />
averaging just over 100<lb />
yards a game passing.<lb />
Quarterback Roy Dewalt<lb />
leads the Mavs in four<lb />
offensive categories and<lb />
has thrown two touchdown<lb />
passes and scored four<lb />
times himself. The 6-2<lb />
junior from Houston, Tex.<lb />
has rushed 64 times for 302<lb />
yards and has completed 27<lb />
of 61 passes for another 383<lb />
yards.<lb />
The Mavs also have a<lb />
host of capable running<lb />
backs. Philip Jessie carried<lb />
the ball eight times for 55<lb />
yards and grabbed four<lb />
passes for 27 yards last<lb />
week against Louisiana<lb />
Tech. Bill McClesky. a<lb />
junior from Staton. Tex<lb />
has rushed 38 times for 164<lb />
yards this season while<lb />
Tony Feider has 20 carries<lb />
for 121 yards.<lb />
"Our offense didn't<lb />
play one of its best games<lb />
but at times they did play<lb />
well Elliott said. "We<lb />
were pretty beat up in the<lb />
game but none of the<lb />
injuries appear to be really<lb />
serious<lb />
Jessie was voted the<lb />
Mavs top offensive per-<lb />
former against Louisiana<lb />
Tech while linebacker Cliff<lb />
Odom was the top defen-<lb />
sive player with 14 tackles<lb />
and a fumble recovery.<lb />
Despite the Mavs suc-<lb />
cess on offense, Elliott is<lb />
Roy Dewalt<lb />
well aware of the Pirates<lb />
offensive attack and its<lb />
superb defensive showing<lb />
in four games this season.<lb />
"From looking at the<lb />
films, ECU is the best<lb />
football team I have seen<lb />
this season Elliott said.<lb />
"They have excellent team<lb />
speed and run more of a<lb />
multiple offense with the<lb />
triple option<lb />
"If our offense can<lb />
continue to move the ball as<lb />
it has. we will be all right<lb />
there, but our defense has<lb />
got to work harder and<lb />
make the big plays<lb />
ECU Sports<lb />
Information Office<lb />
Being neither seen nor<lb />
heard by his defenders<lb />
might be the best motto for<lb />
ECU split end Terry Gal-<lb />
laher, but the compact<lb />
receiver is certainly hard to<lb />
overlook this fall and is<lb />
making a lot of noise in the<lb />
Pirate attack.<lb />
He opened his senior<lb />
season already ranked as<lb />
the top receiver in the<lb />
history of the school with<lb />
1,214 yards, but he wasn't<lb />
satisfied with that total.<lb />
Heading into Saturday's<lb />
game against Texas - Ar-<lb />
lington, the 5-9 wide re-<lb />
ceiver from Warner Robins,<lb />
Ga. has accumulated 1,351<lb />
yards and snared 13 touch-<lb />
down passes during his<lb />
career, also a school record.<lb />
"I can enjoy the game<lb />
whether I catch a pass or<lb />
not explained the sure-<lb />
fingered Gallaher. "Of<lb />
course it makes it a lot more<lb />
fun if I can catch a few,<lb />
though. But, what I really<lb />
enjoy is seeing ECU win, no<lb />
matter what my role<lb />
Gallaher's coaches rate<lb />
him a winner because of his<lb />
unselfish contributions to<lb />
the team effort with tireless<lb />
blocking and steady pass<lb />
receiving.<lb />
"If you only have one<lb />
receiver out there, like<lb />
most wishbone teams do<lb />
most of the time ex-<lb />
plained Pirate coach Pat<lb />
Dye, "Then Terry is the<lb />
type you want<lb />
With Gallaher in the<lb />
game all the Pirates have is<lb />
a man who always get in<lb />
position to make a block,<lb />
almost never misses any-<lb />
thing thrown close to him,<lb />
and is a threat to score from<lb />
anywhere on the field.<lb />
"My blocking is a little<lb />
different than most. I don't<lb />
overpower a whole lot of<lb />
people Gallaher explain-<lb />
ed, flashing a wide, toothy<lb />
smile that would easily rival<lb />
President Carter's grin. "I<lb />
sort of have to sneak up on<lb />
people to block them.<lb />
Sometimes just running<lb />
them far enough away from<lb />
the play accomplishes the<lb />
same thing as a bone-<lb />
crushing block<lb />
Gallaher make light of<lb />
his dimunitive stature when<lb />
it comes to the blocking<lb />
wars, but he uses good<lb />
technique and tenacity to<lb />
overcome any shortcomings<lb />
a 170-pounder might be<lb />
expected to have.<lb />
"I think his competi-<lb />
tiveness is his best asset<lb />
said receiver coach Henry<lb />
Trevathan of his star pupil.<lb />
 Herealizeshis assignment<lb />
is important to the team on<lb />
every down and he plays<lb />
just that way like the<lb />
success of each play and<lb />
the game rested on his<lb />
effort<lb />
Ask Appalachian State<lb />
if he isn't a deep threat.<lb />
The wily Gallaher caught<lb />
scoring passes of 82, 77 and<lb />
59 yards against that team<lb />
in 1975, a feat which gave<lb />
him a 72.7-yard average<lb />
catch for the game and<lb />
earned him a spot in the<lb />
NCAA record book which<lb />
he still retains.<lb />
Clark is ECU's Mr. McGoo<lb />
By SAM ROGERS<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
Probably one of the more amusing player photograph's<lb />
in the 1978 ECU football press guide is Noah Clark's.<lb />
"You ought to see that picture joked teammate<lb />
Jeffery Warren after practice Tuesday afternoon. "Noah<lb />
looks more likeMr. McGoo'<lb />
Clark, the likeable Pirate defensive tackle, leaned back<lb />
against his locker, shrugged his shoulders and smiled.<lb />
"They gave me that nickname because of those glasses I've<lb />
got on when I had the picture made<lb />
"I don't wear glasses during the game explained<lb />
Clark. "But then I started jumping offsides a few times and<lb />
everybody thought I was seeing things. That's when they<lb />
really started kiddin' me<lb />
Off the field Clark may carry the "Mr. McGoo" label<lb />
but on the field he's recignized by his teammates as<lb />
"Gutbuster Little wonder. Clark along with the rest of his<lb />
defensive cohorts have performed brilliantly during the first<lb />
four games of the season.<lb />
The Pirates have allowed only five touchdowns in four<lb />
games and in last week's 38-9 victory over Southwestern<lb />
Louisiana, the ECU defense limited the Cajuns to just 161<lb />
total yards and eight first downs.<lb />
'f don't wear glasses during the game.<lb />
But then I started jumping offsides a few<lb />
times and everybody thought I was seeing<lb />
things. That's when they really started<lb />
kiddin ' me.Noah Clark<lb />
"We play together as a unit out there Clark said.<lb />
"They're no individuals. When somebody makes a good<lb />
play we slap him on the beck and let him know we all<lb />
appreciate it.<lb />
"We set goals each week. We went to try to limit each<lb />
team to less than 100 yards rushing and 100 yards passing.<lb />
We accomplished our goal against Southwestern Louisiana,<lb />
bu coach Dye makes sure we take one game at a time.<lb />
The 6-1, 225 pounder from Robersonville currently<lb />
ranks sixth on the team in tackles with 23 and has also been<lb />
credited with two quarterback tacks and a caused fumble.<lb />
However, Clark says a pre-season hand fracture has<lb />
continuedto bother him and that his best performances<lb />
still lie ahead.<lb />
"I haven t played the type game I'm supposed to. but<lb />
I'm gradually coming back Clark said. "The injury<lb />
bothered me for awhile and I was really dragging around in<lb />
practice. I'm still not playing that well, but things will get<lb />
better<lb />
More often than not, fumbles have put the defense in<lb />
holes in several crucial situatons this season which may<lb />
have stirred some grumbles from the other side of the line<lb />
but Clark says it forces the Pirates to work even harder<lb />
"Everyone's been down on the offense this season, but<lb />
not us explained Clark. "If they can't put together a<lb />
scoring drive or can't pick up a first down1, it forces us to<lb />
work harder. We want to get them that turnover that can<lb />
turn things around.<lb />
"Then when they come up with a big play or a<lb />
touchdown, it's our job to go out there and protect the lead<lb />
for them. When they're playing well it makes us go out<lb />
there and try to play even better<lb />
Saturday the Pirates will face the University of<lb />
Texas-Arlington another team which runs the wishbone and<lb />
does it quite well. The Movin Mavs are averaging over 250<lb />
yards on the ground and over 100 yards through the air.<lb />
"They've got a big offensive line and they come off the<lb />
ball real well from what I've seen in the films, noted<lb />
Clark. "Even though they're 0-4 we cant look at them that<lb />
way. It could be a turning point in their season if they beat<lb />
us.<lb />
"The wishbone is a tough offense to defend against, but<lb />
since we've seen it all the time on our practice fieid it may<lb />
be a little easier to work against. But we cant afford to<lb />
relax against any teams the rest of the year. We've been<lb />
working iust as hard this week as we did the last two weeks.<lb />
Like the rest of his teammates, Clark has now put the<lb />
losses to North Carolina and N.C. State behind. Certainly<lb />
they're games the Pirates might have won, but neither one<lb />
of the setbacks have ended ECU'S season.<lb />
"We knew we could have beaten North Carolina or N.C.<lb />

them off Clark said. "But you've got to pick things up<lb />

in a week filled with upsets<lb />
as he posted an 8-4 record<lb />
By CHA RLES CHA NDLER<lb />
Assistant Sports Editor<lb />
The national Football<lb />
League continued its drive<lb />
toward a totally strange<lb />
season last week. After last<lb />
week's games, the highly<lb />
touted Cincinnati Bengals<lb />
had an 0-4 record. The<lb />
same was true for O.J.<lb />
Simpson's San Francisco<lb />
49ers. The powerful Oak-<lb />
land Raiders stood at 2-2,<lb />
much below their ultra-high<lb />
standards. Meanwhile, the<lb />
"lowly" New York Giants<lb />
were 3-1. The Tampa Bay<lb />
Buccaneers had an unusual<lb />
-ly respectable 2-2 record.<lb />
The story goes on and on.<lb />
Will this week continue<lb />
this strange trend? No one<lb />
knows. Here's a glance at<lb />
the games:<lb />
HOUSTON 17<lb />
CLEVELAND 16<lb />
These two teams may<lb />
battle it out for wild-card<lb />
playoff spot. Both have<lb />
played great football so far.<lb />
The Oilers get the nod but<lb />
only by a "razor's" edge.<lb />
OAKLAND 24<lb />
CHICAGO 13<lb />
The Bears have run into<lb />
the difficult part of their<lb />
schedule. The Raiders' loss<lb />
to New Engalnd will not<lb />
help Chicago at all. John<lb />
ladden should have his<lb />
group brewing. This spells<lb />
out TROUBLE to the Bears.<lb />
NEW YORK GIANTS 17<lb />
ATLANTA 14<lb />
The Falcons are<lb />
another one of those disap-<lb />
pointments of '78. The<lb />
Giants, on the other hand,<lb />
have performed well under<lb />
the direction of quarterback<lb />
Joe Pisarcik. The Giants<lb />
improve their record to 4-1<lb />
with this victory.<lb />
MINNESOTA 24<lb />
TAMPA BAY 14<lb />
The Buccaneers upset<lb />
the Vikes two weeks ago.<lb />
But Fran Tarkenton and<lb />
company rebounded with a<lb />
biggin over Chicago last<lb />
Monday night. Now the<lb />
Vikings feel they have a<lb />
matter to settle with the<lb />
Bucs. They should be cele-<lb />
brating after the game.<lb />
DALLAS27<lb />
WASHINGTON 24<lb />
This is by far the most<lb />
important game of the<lb />
week. The Cowboys, simpiy<lb />
must win. A loss would<lb />
drop them two games be-<lb />
hind the Redskins. The<lb />
Redskins are undefeated<lb />
and playing well. Joe<lb />
Theisman is having a super<lb />
year, as is John Rigglns.<lb />
The game is being played<lb />
in Washington, but look for<lb />
Dallas to win what should<lb />
bean extremely exciting<lb />

NEW ORLEANS 14<lb />
The Rams have adjust-<lb />
ed well to all their coaching<lb />
changes. Now they are<lb />
ready to fulfill all the<lb />
promise they have had for<lb />
the last several years. New<lb />
Orleans should find them<lb />
very hard to handle.<lb />
BALTIMORE 24<lb />
PHILADEPLPHIA 17<lb />
The Eagles are playing<lb />
better than the Colts at this<lb />
point. But the feeling here<lb />
is that the Colts will come<lb />
through once more In the<lb />
clutch for coach Ted Mar ich-<lb />
broda. If Bert Jones ever<lb />
returns, the Colts will be<lb />
better than just the second-<lb />
rate team they have shown.<lb />
PITTSBURGH 31<lb />
NEW YORK JETS 7<lb />
The Steelers shoulo<lb />
get a big boost from their<lb />
thrilling overtime win over<lb />
Cleveland last week. The<lb />
Jets receive an opposite<lb />
affect due to the injury to<lb />
quarterback Richard Todd,<lb />
who suffered a broken bone<lb />
in last week's game with<lb />
Washington. The Steeler<lb />
defense is solid, and Terry<lb />
Bradshaw always seems to<lb />
come through in the clutch.<lb />
He needn't worry about a<lb />
comeback this week,<lb />
though.<lb />
BUFFALO 24<lb />
KANSASCITY21<lb />
This is more of aguess<lb />
than anything else. Both<lb />
teams have had off and on<lb />
moments thus far. Look for<lb />
Joe Ferguson's passing to<lb />
pull the Bills away victor-<lb />
iously.<lb />
DENVER 17<lb />
SEA TTLE 14<lb />
Jim Zorn will give the<lb />
"Orange Crush" a lot to<lb />
worry about Yet theyshould<lb />
be up to it. The Bronco<lb />
offense always seems to<lb />
score just enough points to<lb />
win. This week is no<lb />
exception.<lb />
MIAMI 20 ST. LOUIS 17<lb />
Miami was soundly bea-<lb />
ten by Philadephia last<lb />
week. This doesn't sit very<lb />
well with Dolphin coach<lb />
Don Shula. It's too bad<lb />
he'll have to take out his<lb />
frustrations on a nice guy<lb />
like Bud Wilkinson.<lb />
NEW ENGLAND 24<lb />
SAN DIEGO20<lb />
The Patriots have play-<lb />
ed inconsistently thus far.<lb />
They have lost to Washing-<lb />
ton and Baltimore. Yet they<lb />
upset mighty Oakland 21-<lb />
14 last week. They should<lb />
get things in order against<lb />
the disappointing (yes, yet<lb />
another one) Chargers, who<lb />
are only 1-3.<lb />
CINCINNATI 21<lb />
SAN FRANCISCO 17<lb />
Both teams are bitter<lb />
disappointments to their<lb />
managements at this time.<lb />
The Bengals simply have<lb />
too much talent to continue<lb />
in their losing ways. San<lb />
Francisco should become<lb />
their first victim of the<lb />
year.<lb />
GREEN BAY 21<lb />
DETROIT 14<lb />
Seahawk quarterback<lb />
The Packers are a big<lb />
surprise thus far with a 3-1<lb />
record. Detroit is off to a<lb />
horrendous start. Both pat-<lb />
