The normal procedure of<lb />

due tothe fact that the Screenings<lb />

Therefore, the legislature vo-<lb />

Gary Miller, SGA Transit<lb />

on the progress the transit system<lb />
has made this year and his hopes<lb />

Miller asked the legislature to<lb />

Shortly thereafter, the legisla-<lb />

the first attempt to several<lb />
reasons.<lb />
"We made a mistake in the<lb />

age.<lb />
"We asked all the faculty to<lb />
announce it and I believe that<lb />
maybe one out of 16 did<lb />
Farr added that the results of<lb />
the voting will be published in<lb />
survey form provided that the<lb />

Lost constituency<lb />
The crux of Chancellor Jenkins' decision to<lb />
override the SGA Legislature's vote fa a recall<lb />
election rested with his determination of who<lb />
represented the democratically expressed wishes of<lb />
the ECU student electorate: Sessoms and Warren,<lb />
winners in a legislatively authorized plurality election<lb />
for President and Vice President respectively; or the<lb />
SGA Legislature, which, although democratically<lb />
elected in the fall, becomes nearly 50 per cent<lb />
self-appointed by the spring.<lb />
The screening procedure by which the legislature<lb />
maintains its membership in the face of an<lb />
unfortunate turnover rate leaves questionable that<lb />
body's authority as a representative assembly of<lb />
students. Many have criticized the system which<lb />
gives a standing committee within the legislature the<lb />
authority to weed out or approve those candidates<lb />
whom it feels are most representative of the student<lb />
body. Among the "qualifications" which the<lb />
Screenings and Appointments Committee may seek<lb />
could be the candidates' acceptance of established<lb />
opinion within the legislature, thus allowing<lb />
the members of this committee a virtual stranglehold<lb />
over incoming ideas.<lb />
Under the present constitutional arrangement,<lb />
however, this procedure for filling vacancies is nearly<lb />
unavoidable. The only alternative would be to have a<lb />
permanently established election committee to<lb />
supervise interim balloting to fill vacant seats.<lb />
Considering the low turnout in the traditional fall and<lb />
spring SGA elections, this committee could hardly<lb />
expect its efforts to draw much student participation,<lb />
especially when most students never come into<lb />
contact with their representatives in student<lb />
government and others are unaware of what "SGA"<lb />
stands for.<lb />
There is an easy solution to the present morass<lb />
which allows a nearly one-half non-elected legisla-<lb />
ture to conduct student government business under<lb />
the guise of being the democraticalIy authorized<lb />
representatives of student opinion, as was the case in<lb />
the vote to establish and fund a recall election<lb />
committee. The answer is to alter the constituency of<lb />
the legislature. Instead of having "day" and "dorm"<lb />
students represented, legislators would be elected by<lb />
the members of the various departments and schools.<lb />
Besides the advantages of each "precinct"<lb />
having its own mechanism for interim elections, this<lb />
system would put students in closer touch with their<lb />
elected representatives.<lb />

Football not to blame for soccer's fate<lb />
ToFOUNTAINHEAD:<lb />
I must take a different view on<lb />
the destruction of soooer at ECU.<lb />
Football can't be blamed. It sthe<lb />
money sport at ECU. The crowds<lb />
grow larger each year and the<lb />
revenue in turn increases each<lb />
year. The stadium, fortunately, is<lb />
being financed through contribu-<lb />
tions separate from Athletic De-<lb />
partment funds. The coaches, in<lb />
my opinion, deserved the bonus<lb />
money, for they did a great job.<lb />
The problem goes deepei than<lb />
football. I feel like an expert on<lb />
the subject of the destruction of<lb />
ECU athletic teams because in<lb />
1972 I rowed on the Crew Team<lb />
and my roommate played la-<lb />
crosse. One must look at other<lb />
schools suffering the pains of<lb />
inflation and higher costs. The<lb />
destruction of sports is simply not<lb />
taking place at any other school in<lb />
SGA ex-officer had best intentions<lb />
ToFOUNTAINHEAD:<lb />
To me this whole thing started<lb />
with the best of intentions. I<lb />
wanted to oontinue to work for the<lb />
Ft-head. And when my head hit<lb />
brick walls in that area I decided<lb />
to try my hand at serving students<lb />
in SGA.<lb />
Believe it or not students, the<lb />
people who I worked with in SGA<lb />
cared about you. I never saw a<lb />
single student who came to our<lb />
offices get put off. The doors were<lb />
never locked to any student.<lb />
But now I have been accused<lb />
of not caring about international<lb />
programs on campus, an office I<lb />
created and offers many diverse<lb />
services to ECU students. This<lb />
was said because I resigned from<lb />
the Sessoms administration-and<lb />
was signed by people I have never<lb />
met or heard of.<lb />
Believe me, I didn't want to<lb />
write another letter to Ft-head.<lb />
When I resigned I explained<lb />
myself very clearly in writing to<lb />
Neil and collected his word that<lb />
my offioe would not be forgotten.<lb />
I have repeatedly offered my help<lb />
to anyone who chooses to work<lb />
in that offioe.<lb />
I started serving the students<lb />
with my good intentions but had<lb />
to say something about what I<lb />
considered misuse of student<lb />
money. I continuously hit brick<lb />
walls. But now I have changed. I<lb />
now see that poor Ft-head cannot<lb />
serve students to the best of their<lb />
ability if SGA ex-officers continue<lb />
to attack their improprieties. I am<lb />
truly sorry and wish Ft-head luck<lb />
in serving the ECU community<lb />
fairly and objectively.<lb />
And so students, govern your-<lb />
selves. We have the second<lb />
largest SGA in the nation and<lb />
they use your money. Climb those<lb />
stairs and offer your help, but<lb />
don't look for me up there. I'm<lb />
tired of fighting.<lb />
Your friend,<lb />
Kent Johnson<lb />
N.C. as it is here. As ECU'S<lb />
sports funds grow each year, one<lb />
would assume the university<lb />
should be able to add sports, not<lb />
cut them, and Title IX is NOT to<lb />
blame, either. Other schools are<lb />
adjusting without cutting out<lb />
men's sports.<lb />
Look at ECU'S football schedule<lb />
in 1969 and now realize in the last<lb />
two years we have won the SC<lb />
championship, been on regional<lb />
T.V and beaten three ACC<lb />
opponents. Quite an achieve-<lb />
ment.<lb />
The only other possible an-<lb />
swer seems to be mismanage-<lb />
ment of funds. Handling a big<lb />
athletic program is quite a job. If<lb />
our current staff cannot make<lb />
ends meet without cutting sports<lb />
out left and right, then I propose<lb />
that Dr. Jenkins clean house in<lb />
Mingesfrom Athletic Director on<lb />
down and get a staff in here that<lb />
can do the job with our athletics.<lb />
ECU students, fans and alumni<lb />
deserve it.<lb />
The purpose of this University<lb />
is NOT to have one sport that is a<lb />
national champ, a direction in<lb />
which ECU seems headed. The<lb />
students and friends deserve to<lb />
have lacrosse, soccer, handball,<lb />
fencing, any sport they desire. If<lb />
it were not for students, ECU<lb />
would probably be a maze of<lb />
tobacco warehouses. If the stu-<lb />
dents of ECU want soccer, or<lb />
lacrosse, or crew, or whatever,<lb />
please call Dr. Leo Jenkins at<lb />
757-6212. It could make the<lb />
difference in life or death for ECU<lb />
soooer.<lb />

New Pitt County hospital<lb />
receives first 103 patients<lb />
By CINDY BROOME<lb />
Assistant News Editor<lb />
The move of 103 patients from<lb />
the old Pitt County Memorial<lb />
Hospital to the new one Saturday,<lb />
April 30 went smoothly, accord-<lb />
ing to Jack Richardson, hospital<lb />
director.<lb />
"As far as I'm concerned, it<lb />
went beautifully Richardson<lb />
said.<lb />
"The uniqueness of the whole<lb />
group - doctors, nurses, students,<lb />
everyone - was great. It was just<lb />
one effort together<lb />
Richardson said he was<lb />
pleased to have been a part of the<lb />
move.<lb />
"The two hours and 52<lb />
minutes it took to move the<lb />
patients was the most beautiful<lb />
part he said.<lb />
"We had been told by others<lb />
who have been involved in patient<lb />
moves that the actual move would<lb />
be the smoothest<lb />
Richardson also said the com-<lb />
munity involvement was great.<lb />
"We asked that the visitors<lb />
not visit on moving day, and they<lb />
were very cooperative<lb />
Jean Owens, administrator fa<lb />
nursing and in charge of the<lb />
patient move, said the move went<lb />
"fantastically well<lb />
"I don't believe you'll find<lb />
anybody who thinks it didn't go<lb />
well said Owens.<lb />
"I don't think anything could<lb />
have been better. I wouldn't have<lb />
changed a thing.<lb />
"That's a pretty good<lb />
record Owens said of the time it<lb />
took to move the patients.<lb />
"I think everybody at Pitt<lb />
County Memorial Hospital can be<lb />
proud of that move she said.<lb />
Ths hospital staff began mov-<lb />
ing equipme-1 about 5 a.m and<lb />
the first patient was admitted<lb />
around 7 a.m.<lb />
The three-hour move ended<lb />
when the last patient was admit-<lb />
ted about 10 a.m.<lb />
The move from the old<lb />
hospital to the new was rather sad<lb />
for some hospital staffers,<lb />
especially for Mabel Baker and<lb />
Vera Smith, R.N.s.<lb />
Both had moved from the old<lb />
Pitt County General Hospital to<lb />
the "new" Pitt County Memorial<lb />
Hospital in 1951.<lb />
"We're sad to leave this old<lb />
building said Smith, "but<lb />
we're excited about the new<lb />
one<lb />
"This old facility has out-<lb />
grown its purpose and we know<lb />
the new facility is necessary with<lb />
the growth of the community<lb />
Baker said.<lb />
In comparing the two patient<lb />
moves, they agreed that this<lb />
move was much more organized<lb />
due to long-range planning. They<lb />
said patients were moved more<lb />
rapidly.<lb />
The recent move only took<lb />
about three hours, but the 1951<lb />
move took approximately eight<lb />
hours.<lb />
The new hospital has 370<lb />
beds, in comparison to the 205<lb />
beds of the old hospital.<lb />

Hardee's founder<lb />
begins new chain<lb />
By MICHAELFUTCH<lb />
Assistant Trends Editor<lb />
Many Greenville citizens are<lb />
unaware that the original fast<lb />
food Hardee's hamburger stand<lb />
was built in their hometown.<lb />
These same iersons are also<lb />
probably unaware that the man<lb />
responsible fa the national chain-<lb />
store which bears his name, as<lb />
well as other restaurants in the<lb />
area, is very much alive and is<lb />
now attempting to establish<lb />
another fast food chain.<lb />
"This is my last chain said<lb />
Wilbur Hardee, 58, a Greenville<lb />
resident.<lb />
According to Hardee, Beef<lb />
and Shakes has been very suc-<lb />
cessful. In fact, he said, another<lb />
restaurant is now being construct-<lb />
ed north of the Tar River where<lb />
the old North Side Lumber<lb />
Company originally stood.<lb />
"I have a lot of studying and<lb />
thinking to do before I go too<lb />
far Hardee said when referring<lb />
to his new restaurant venture. "I<lb />
wrnt to get a sound footing before<lb />
I branch out<lb />
This sounds a bit ironic for the<lb />
man who is responsible for<lb />
Hardee's Hamburgers, The Little<lb />
Mint, Greenville's Three Steers,<lb />
and the unsuccessful Wilbur's.<lb />
But Hardee's business moves<lb />
have not always worked out for<lb />
the best.<lb />
"Looking back on things I've<lb />
been into while making other<lb />
people rich, I know today that if<lb />
you take one good thing and stick<lb />
with it, things will be better<lb />
remarked Hardee.<lb />
"That's what I'm trying to do<lb />
today "<lb />
Wilbur Hardee was born in<lb />
Pitt County, on Washington<lb />
Highway, on Aug. 15, 1918.<lb />
Hardee quite school in the<lb />
eighth grade after attending<lb />
Hamilton Elementary and Bell<lb />
Arthur High School.<lb />
He became involved in the<lb />
restaurant business in 1940, in<lb />
Parmele, N.C.<lb />
"I began in business at the<lb />
age of 13 with my brother-in-<lb />
law said Hardee.<lb />
"I ran a service station with a<lb />
hot dog business<lb />
Later, Hardee joined the Navy<lb />
in 1941, just after Pearl Harbor<lb />
was attacked, and spent four<lb />
years in the service. He served<lb />
two years in the southwest Pacific<lb />
and left the service as Chief Petty<lb />
Officer.<lb />
Hardee has lived in Greenville<lb />
since 1945. Besides the restau-<lb />
rant business, Hardee has worked<lb />
in other fields.<lb />
"I've been in real estate<lb />
said Hardee. "I ran some service<lb />
stations, grocery stores, a bowl-<lb />
ing alley, and a pool room<lb />
Hardee first began his restau-<lb />
rant business in Greervville with<lb />
the Silo Restaurant, now known<lb />
as Three Steers. One of his<lb />
daughters now manages the<lb />
restaurant.<lb />
"I started with the fast food<lb />
business in September of 1960<lb />
with Hardee's said Hardee. "I<lb />
patterned myself after a Mc-<lb />
Donald's restaurant which I saw<lb />
in Greensboro in 1959.<lb />
"The charcoal broil idea was<lb />
different. We also used fresh<lb />
ground beef in the first restau-<lb />
rants<lb />
According to Hardee, he<lb />
started the first apple turnover<lb />
factory on the East ooast in 1961.<lb />
The factory was located in Ayden,<lb />
N.C.<lb />
"I had a contract to sell six<lb />
million turnovers to Hardee's<lb />
Hardee said.<lb />
Hardee then brought in Jim<lb />
Gardner and Leonard Rawls when<lb />
the Hardee's restaurant was just<lb />
getting off the ground. He later<lb />
sold them the rights to Hardee's<lb />
in 1962, which they later made<lb />
into a national chain.<lb />
Hardee said he sold the<lb />
restaurant for a profit. He has no<lb />
stock in Hardee's today, but said<lb />
that he should have held the<lb />
rights of one-eigth of one percent<lb />
of the gross international take-in.<lb />
Hardee also created the Little<lb />
Mint Chain of 1964, and opened<lb />
the chain to the public in 1969. He<lb />
remained president of the chain<lb />
from 1964 to 1973.<lb />
Hardee had some financial<lb />
difficulty with his two Wilbur<lb />
restaurants in Greenville. These<lb />
restaurants dosed in 1976 after a<lb />
loss.<lb />
Now Hardee is attempting a<lb />
new fast food empire with Beef<lb />
and Shakes.<lb />
"The opportunity today is just<lb />
as good as it was in the '60s with<lb />
the right food and system said<lb />
Hardee.<lb />
"The trouble with most small<lb />
chainstoday isthat they will open<lb />
a lot of locations at once and lots<lb />
of them make no money. They<lb />
then go broke<lb />
Hardee believes he was a<lb />
early front-runner in the fast-food<lb />
business. He feels that his first<lb />
efforts have been copied over the<lb />
years.<lb />
When asked about the stigma<lb />
that is placed on fast food, some-<lb />
times called junk food, Hardee<lb />
admitted that there is a lot of<lb />
room for upgrading the food.<lb />
"I've started something here<lb />
(Beef and Shakes) with a better<lb />
grade hamburger, milkshake, and<lb />
french fries said Hardee. "The<lb />
day is coming when the burger<lb />
will be made as the customer<lb />
wants it<lb />
So Wilbur Hardee has started<lb />
what he calls his last chain. With<lb />
one Beef and Shakes already<lb />
operating on the oorner of Green-<lb />
ville's Fifth and Reade St and<lb />
another on the way, Hardee oould<lb />
have the ultimate success he has<lb />
often let escape for him.<lb />
"The future holds a lot of hard<lb />
work as does the past said<lb />
Hardee. "There are a lot of<lb />
systems to be studied, and I have<lb />
to make sure each location makes<lb />
money<lb />
CHILLY STUDIES HAVE been the name of the<lb />

Big week for flicks<lb />
For perhaps the first time in the history of Greenville cinema there<lb />
is not a loser in the bunch.<lb />
This week in Greenville there is a plethora of fine movies. Two of<lb />
the best films of '76 are in town with the others being "Young<lb />
Frankenstein and a recent release, "The Child This reviewer feels<lb />
that this is the finest collection of films in Greenville this year and this<lb />
week's column will be a brief synopsis of each.<lb />
Network: In the opinion of this reviewer, but for "Small Change"<lb />
and "Faces this is the best movie of '76. It is the finest cinematic<lb />
example of satiric humor.<lb />
The action of the film revolves around the Network exploitation of<lb />
Howard Beale (Peter Finch), a neurotic newsman whose televised<lb />
rhetoricturnshiminto"TheMad Prophet of the Airways The film is<lb />
pure satire, at the expense of itself, and therein lies its genius and its<lb />
flaw.<lb />
The film, in the effort to be true to its intent, constantly satirizes<lb />
itself. The screenplay lends itself to the perceptions that much of this<lb />
movie, of life, is little more than the stuff soap operas are made of.<lb />
This continual self-effacement turns the movie from a production to the<lb />
cumbersome stumbling of a symbolic giant. It is awkward, yet vivid.<lb />
Much has been made of the performances in this film and it<lb />
contains some of the best acting of '76. Faye Dunaway is excellent as<lb />
the hyper though fragile female production manager and Robert<lb />
DuVall is fine as the epitome of the company man.<lb />
I do not agree with the premise of this film. I do not think that<lb />
television is the all-pervasive force Chayevsky would have us believe,<lb />
but Networks are affecting and powerful. And so is the movie. Three<lb />
and one half stars-Now appearing at Pitt Theater through Thursday.<lb />
Rocky: One of the top of five films of this year. The film revolves<lb />
around the attempt of a young man to garner self-respect in the only<lb />
means he can truly understand. It is a film about media exploitation,<lb />
the morality of money, and the world where men beat each other up for<lb />
$41. Sylvester Stallone gives a convincing, if single-faceted<lb />
performance, as Rocky, the underdog, good natured street kid. The<lb />
movie is murky and slow at the start yet finishes with energy and<lb />
sincerity. It is an amusing film that is blatant and strong. Three and<lb />
one half starsHeld over at Plaza Two through Thursday.<lb />
Young Frankenstein: This is the usual Mel Brooks set of affairs, replete<lb />
with slapstick and Jewish jokes and puns. The movie brings together<lb />
the grandson of Frankenstein (Gene Wilder), Igor (Marty Feldman),<lb />
and the monster (Peter Boyle).<lb />
Gene Wilder is the new Dr. Frankenstein and the funniest scenes<lb />
are with his fiancee (Madeleine Kahn) and the teaching sessions with<lb />
the monster (Peter Boyle). Marty Feldman is Igor, his is perhaps the<lb />
best performance of the lot. The film is abundant with the Mel Brooks<lb />
sytle of humor. It is raucous, yet subtle, like leprosy, but it has<lb />
some excellent moments. Three starsPlaza One through Thursday.<lb />
The Child .Taking advantage of the recent surge of supernatural horror<lb />
flicks, thisNovack release is a young "Carrie" who calls upon demons<lb />
and natural forces to annihilate those who annoy her. It is occasionally<lb />
suspenseful. The plot and acting are average. In a normal week in<lb />
Greenville, this would be the pick of the litter. Two starsPark<lb />
Theater through Thursday.<lb />

Mildred Lewis bring a wealth of<lb />

many of Hollywood's most im-<lb />

"Grand Prix among many<lb />
others.<lb />
Mildred Lewis became in-<lb />

her husband agreed to produce<lb />

became her next project, followed<lb />
by the current "Brothers<lb />
Predisposed towards films<lb />
dealing with social issues and<lb />
events, Edward and Mildred<lb />
Lewis found themselves involved<lb />
in the struggle fa prison refam,<lb />
characterized in recent years by<lb />
explosive events which were<lb />
given tremendous media ex-<lb />
posure in prisons such as Attica<lb />
and Soledad.<lb />
"We live in California<lb />
Mildrew Lewis explains, "and the<lb />
case of the Soledad Brothers<lb />
received a lot of press. We<lb />
followed the stay, not with the<lb />
intention of doing a film, but<lb />
mae in terms of curiosity and<lb />
information. We soon found<lb />
ourselves absabed however, and<lb />
the issues involved became very<lb />
important to us<lb />
"This was in conjunction with<lb />
other things that were going on<lb />
Edward Lewis adds, "such as<lb />
Attica and other violations of<lb />
rights, particularly of blacks. That<lb />
was really the thing we were<lb />
zeroing in on. There was a series<lb />
of incidents that you would hear<lb />
about on radio or watch on<lb />
television that collectively pro-<lb />
vided a drive to tell a stay.<lb />
"I think it's important that<lb />
people understand that this is not<lb />
meant to be the Soledad Brothers<lb />
stay because if we wanted to do<lb />
that we would have made a<lb />
documentary. This picture is<lb />
fiction, although many of the<lb />
incidents and many of the char-<lb />
acters are derived from the actual<lb />
events of the times<lb />
An aiginal saeenplay soon<lb />
emerged from their collective<lb />
effats, with Mildred Lewis gain-<lb />
ing additioial insight by watching<lb />
Angela Davis in classroom<lb />
situations.<lb />
"I started reading ,the auto-<lb />
biography of Angela Davis be-<lb />
cause I had attended some of her<lb />
classes at UCLA and although I<lb />
wasn't really ever part of the class<lb />
I was struck by this woman's<lb />
ability to practically mesmerize<lb />
an audience. She is a very<lb />
impressive person, and, of<lb />
course, in the book there is the<lb />
stay of her relationship with one<lb />
of the Soledad Brothers, which we<lb />
incaporated into our film<lb />
The actual shooting of the<lb />
movie took place within Nath<lb />
Dakota State Penitentiary, which<lb />
aeated a few problems fa the<lb />
cast and aew.<lb />
"The biggest problem<lb />
Edward Lewis explains was the<lb />
mechanical limitation on space<lb />
and the strict budgeting of time<lb />
because we had to build our<lb />
schedule around their routines,<lb />
such as meals, exercise periods<lb />
and so fath. We thought security<lb />
would be a big problem, but it<lb />
wasn't, although the warden, the<lb />
day befae we started, got all of<lb />
the cast and aew together and<lb />
passed around releases that<lb />
everyone had to sign. He then<lb />
made a speech in which he<lb />
infamed us that should anyone<lb />
be taken hostage the state would<lb />
not allow any prisoner out the<lb />
front doa under any circum-<lb />
stances. They would do every-<lb />

thing they oould to see that no<lb />
injuries occurred and that tear<lb />
gas would be used first, but<lb />
ultimately the state would not<lb />
assume responsibility in this<lb />
instance. Everyone signed the<lb />
piece of paper to this effect and<lb />
they were all very uptight. It was<lb />
a strange way to begin a film, but<lb />
everything oouldn't have waked<lb />
out better<lb />
Perhaps the central issue<lb />
involved with "Brothers" is the<lb />
concept of an indeterminate<lb />
sentence fa oanmitting a aime.<lb />
Edward and Mildred Lewis were<lb />
opposed to this idea from the very<lb />
outset of their film.<lb />
"Fatunately, the indetermi-<lb />
nant sentence has been just<lb />
recently repealed in Califania,<lb />
although it is probably the ctux of<lb />
our whole stay Edward Lewis<lb />
pointsout. "We almost called the<lb />
movie 'One To Life' because of<lb />
this device which allows prison<lb />
authaities, in the most brutal<lb />
fashion, to oontrol the behavia of<lb />
their prisoners. For a minor<lb />
sentence, like the young man in<lb />
our stay, a prisoier oould be kept<lb />
fa the remainder of his life a<lb />
until such time as the penal<lb />
authaities felt he was ready to be<lb />
freed, based on his behavia. It<lb />
was simply a way of facing<lb />
people to adhere to the arbitrary<lb />
standards of the individual pri-<lb />
son. Thus the men who are<lb />
serving time had no idea as to<lb />
how long they will be in prison<lb />
and this generates tension and<lb />
resistance which we demonstrate<lb />
in our film<lb />
Mildred Lewis summarizes<lb />
the goals and objectives in the<lb />
picture which she and her hus-<lb />
band have written and produoed,<lb />
giving special emphasis to the<lb />
feelings which she hopes they<lb />
have effectively portrayed.<lb />
"I think that it's a tremend-<lb />
ously uplifting naion that a man<lb />
can be put into a cell, have all of<lb />
his liberties taken away from him,<lb />
be treated like an animal and still<lb />
find the fatitude and resolve to<lb />
emerge a heroic figure. Befae he<lb />
goes into jail, our character is<lb />
essentially illiterate. By the time<lb />
he emerges as a leader, however,<lb />
he has become a far more<lb />
educated human being, able to<lb />
involve himself with a woman<lb />
with whom he has never been<lb />
alone, and share a love with her<lb />
based on an idealism, mutual<lb />
respect, and humanity. I think<lb />
this is a tribute to the potential<lb />
within us all and I find that<lb />

Southern wants ECU<lb />
East Carolina and William and Mary have been asked to reconsider<lb />
their plans to withdraw from the Southern Conference at the end of the<lb />
current school year.<lb />
Dr. Frank Bonner, president of the league, announced Friday at a<lb />
Charleston, S.C. news conference that "the Southern Conference<lb />
presidents have asked that the conference forward letters to the<lb />
presidents of William and Mary and East Carolina and stress to them<lb />
that we want both schools to remain as members of our league<lb />
Both William and Mary and East Carolina indicated last spring that<lb />
they would leave the Southern at the end of the 1976-77 school year.<lb />
Both schools will compete as independents.<lb />
Bonner said the conference was hopeful both schools would stay<lb />
with the conference.<lb />
With East Carolina and William and Mary apparently leaving, eight<lb />
schools will be left: The Citadel, Furman, Davidson, Appalachian<lb />
State, Western Carolina, VMI, Marshall and Tennessee-Chattanooga.<lb />
For the conference to survive, it will have to provide better<lb />
promotion of the league members in the future and also secure more<lb />
publicity for the conference.<lb />
Whether ECU will turn around and stay in the league is up to the<lb />
Board of Trustees.<lb />
DYE WANTS DUKE ON SCHEDULE<lb />
Duke University announced a couple of weeks ago that they have<lb />
suspended their four game football series with Penn State. The games<lb />
were slated to be played in 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1982.<lb />
Pat Dye, ECU'S head football coach, said last Wednesday night<lb />
after a speaking engagement in Durham, that he would like East<lb />
Carolina to fill the open date on Duke University's schedule next fall.<lb />
"It would mean a great deal to us and to the state of North<lb />
Carolina Dye said. "I would give anything if I could do something,<lb />
buy a contract or something, so we oould play Duke<lb />
Duke now has an open date for Sept. 10, while East Carolina has<lb />
Texas-Arlington scheduled for that date. Duke has been trying to<lb />
schedule Villanova for the open date, but Athletic Director Carl James<lb />
said the date is still open.<lb />
" As of now, we don't have a game James said We hope to have<lb />
an announcement in a few days. We plan to play on Sept. 10 and East<lb />
Carolina has a game on that date<lb />
The Piratesare slated to play their home opener on Sept. 10 against<lb />
Texas-Arlington, but Dye said it'snot too late to change the schedule if<lb />
Duke is interested.<lb />
SCHAEDEISALL-AMERICA<lb />
Frank Schaede, 150 pound freshman on the East Carolina wrestling<lb />
team, was named to the third team of Amateur Wrestling News<lb />
freshman all-America team last Tuesday.<lb />
Schaede finished 19-9 on the season and competed in the NCAA<lb />
Championships for East Carolina.<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD congratulates Schaede for this honor.<lb />
RECRUITING GOOD IN ALL SPORTS<lb />
East Carolina has had its best recruiting 'oar for all sports this year<lb />
thus far.<lb />
Coach Pat Dye's football team had probably its best recruiting<lb />
effort ever, signing one of the best players in North Carolina in James<lb />
(Tootie) Robbinsof Bertie Central High School. Dye signed six players<lb />
with heights of 6-4 or better. He also has several freshman coming in<lb />
next year that weigh 250 and over.<lb />
New basketball coach Larry Gillman has already signed two<lb />
national blue-chipper sand is expected to sign a big man soon. There's<lb />
not a team in the nation that didn't want Oliver Mack of San Jacinto<lb />
Junior College in Texas. Marquette wanted Wisconsin all-stater<lb />
Walter Moseley very much, but Gillman signed him also. Both players<lb />
are originally from Queens, N.Y.<lb />
Catherine Bolton, coach of the Lady Pirates basketball team, signed<lb />
Lydia Rountree of Elm City, who many feel is the best prepster in<lb />
North Carolina this year. Bolton has also signed Marcia Girven of<lb />
Northern Virginia.<lb />
Cynthia Averett, new coach of the women's tennis team, has signed<lb />
Debbie Spinazzolaof Pennsylvania, one of the top prep players in the<lb />
four state region, encompassing Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey and<lb />
Delaware.<lb />
Bill Carson has signed James Field of New Bern, probably the<lb />
cream of North Carolina sprinters this year.<lb />
Wrestling and swimming are on the verge of signing blue-ohippers<lb />
in their respective sports.<lb />

Debbie Freeman led the Pi-<lb />

Alston, Britt selected as<lb />
Athletes-of-the-Month<lb />
By STEVE WHEELER<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Editor'snote: This will be the<lb />
last Athlete-of-the-Month for<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD this year.<lb />
Mickey Britt and Calvin Alston,<lb />
leaders of Southern Conference<lb />
Championship teams in baseball<lb />
and track, respectively, tied for<lb />
the honor for the month of April.<lb />
On Thursday FOUNTAINHEAD<lb />
will announce the top star of each<lb />
spring sport and FOUNTAIN-<lb />
HEAD'S Athlete-of-the-Year will<lb />
be announced in next Tuesday's<lb />
year-ending issue. <lb />
The voting for April's top<lb />
athlete was very close among all<lb />
of the nominees. Baseball's<lb />
Mickey Britt and track's Calvin<lb />
Alston came out at the top of the<lb />
list with eight and one-half votes<lb />
apiece to tie for the honor.<lb />
Sonny Wooten, also of baseball<lb />
picked up three votes for third<lb />
place, while Henry Hostetler of<lb />
tennis was fourth with two. Pete<lb />
Conaty of baseball and Mitch<lb />
Pergerson of tennis picked up one<lb />
vote each as each nominee<lb />
received at least one vote.<lb />
Britt led the East Carolina<lb />
pitching staff with a 9-0 record.<lb />
The freshman from Hope Mills,<lb />
N.C. had a 6-0 record for the<lb />
month of April, including the title<lb />
clinching 3-2 victory over The<lb />
Citadel on April 30.<lb />
The 6-3 righthander had eight<lb />
appearances for the month, with<lb />
six being starts and five of the<lb />
starts resulting in complete<lb />
games. He ended up leading the<lb />
Southern Conference in earned<lb />
run average with a sparkling 1.50<lb />
mark.<lb />
Britt ended up with the second<lb />
best number of victories in the<lb />
league and gave up the least<lb />
number of walks of any leading<lb />
pitcher.<lb />
He did not use overpowering<lb />
pitches to get his batters out, as<lb />
his 26 strikeouts show, but rather<lb />
used a wide array of pitches and<lb />
good control. A characteristic<lb />
game for Britt would show more<lb />
than two-thirds of opponents'<lb />
outs being groundouts to the<lb />
infielders, as he had good oontrol<lb />
around the batters' knees.<lb />
In 72 innings of pitching, Britt<lb />
did not give up a home run.<lb />
A LSTON SHINES IN LEA GUE<lb />
MEET<lb />
For Alston, it was, the con-<lb />
ference meet which was his<lb />
biggest accomplishment for the<lb />
month. Earlier in the month,<lb />
Alston led the ECU 440 yard relay<lb />
team to a new school record with<lb />
a 40.4 time.<lb />
But it was the conference meet<lb />
in which Alston really came<lb />
through. The 5-7 dynamo won the<lb />
sprinter's dream double, the 100<lb />
and 200 meters, as well as<lb />
starting off the mile relay team to<lb />
a new conference record.<lb />
In the 100 meters, Alston<lb />
upset favorite John Burson of<lb />
Western Carolina in winning in<lb />
10.5. Alston thought he had run a<lb />
faster time than he was given.<lb />
In the 200 meters, Alston<lb />
qualified for the NCAA<lb />
Championships next June by<lb />
being clocked in 20.8.<lb />
Alston ran a 47.3 opening leg<lb />
in the mile relay to propel the<lb />
Pirates to the record of 3:12.6.<lb />
He also started off the 440<lb />
relay in 10.17, which is consider-<lb />
ed a super leg, especially coming<lb />
out of the starting blocks, but the<lb />
Pirates were later disqualified<lb />
when Otis Melvin stepped out of<lb />
his lane on the anchor leg.<lb />
Alston earned two big honors<lb />
by virtue of his performances. He<lb />
was the overwhelming choice for<lb />
the meet's outstanding performer<lb />
and was named by the Greens-<lb />
boro Daily News as the Athlete-<lb />
of-the-Week in the state of North<lb />
Carolina, winning the award over<lb />
NBA all-pro David Thompson,<lb />
who is a native of North Carolina.<lb />
These two athletes are two of<lb />
the most deserving of the honor<lb />
given them by FOUNTAINHEAD<lb />
as they came through with the<lb />
performances needed by their<lb />
respective sports to gain the<lb />
conference championships.<lb />

Veteran Durham leads Pirates<lb />
There is only one man on the<lb />
current East Carolina baseball<lb />
team that was around for the last<lb />
Southern Conference champion-<lb />
ship, in 1974. He now can lay<lb />
claim to the fact that he played on<lb />
two championship teams in his<lb />
ECU career. The man is Pikes-<lb />
ville's Terry Durham.<lb />
Although Durham did not<lb />
personally have one of his best<lb />
ever years at ECU, he did come<lb />
through with a couple of top-<lb />
notch performances when it was<lb />
absolutely neoessary.<lb />
The biggest of the season was<lb />
the second game of a double-<lb />
header against Western Carolina.<lb />
The Pirates had dropped the first<lb />
game by an 8-4 score, and were in<lb />
jeopardy of falling from first place<lb />
in the Southern Conference<lb />
standings. Terry had experienced<lb />
a couple of bad outings, but was<lb />
given the starting assignment for<lb />
the second game.<lb />
"I was really glad to get that<lb />
start admitted the ECU senior<lb />
pitcher I had not pitched well in<lb />
several games, but I was deter-<lb />
mined to do well he said.<lb />
He was facing a team that was<lb />
batting over .300 and playing on<lb />
its own home fields. "Pop as he<lb />
is known to his teammates, came<lb />
up with 1 run, six hit performance<lb />
as East Carolina defeated West-<lb />
ern Carolina4-1, to remain on top<lb />
and eventually goon to clinch the<lb />
championship of the Southern<lb />
Conference.<lb />
PIRATE PITCHER LARRY Durham will lead his team when they<lb />
compete in the Atlantic Regionals of the NCAA tournament.<lb />
"I knew we had to win that<lb />
game Durham related. "Being<lb />
a senior, I wanted to contribute<lb />
something to the team this<lb />
season, and I figured I oould do<lb />
the job that day. As it turned out,<lb />
Gillman signs prep<lb />
standout Moseley<lb />
New head basketball coach<lb />
Larry Gillman has announced the<lb />
signing of Walter Moseley to a<lb />
grant-in-aid with ECU. This<lb />
marks the second signee within a<lb />
week for Gillman.<lb />
Moseley is a 6-1 V4, 175-pound<lb />
point guard from St. John's<lb />
Military Academy in Delafield,<lb />
Wis. He's originally from<lb />
Queens, N.Y same home as<lb />
Oliver Mack, the all-America<lb />
guard that signed last week at<lb />
East Carolina.<lb />
As a senior at St. John's<lb />
Military Academy, Moseley led<lb />
his team to a second place finish<lb />
in the state tournament and a 20-5<lb />
record. As a junior, St. John's<lb />
finished 19-3 on the year.<lb />
Moseley was named all-<lb />
conference, all-state, all-county,<lb />
all-metro and was mentioned on<lb />
several ail-American teams as a<lb />
senior. He led his team in scoring<lb />
with 24.4 points per game. Post-<lb />
season honors also included Most<lb />
Valuable Player for the Lanoers,<lb />
Most Valuable Player in his<lb />
conference and Most Valuable<lb />
Player in the country.<lb />
As a junior, Moseley was<lb />
named all-conference and all-<lb />
county in basketball, as well as,<lb />
all-conference, all-oounty and all-<lb />
state as a tailback in football,<lb />
breaking schc records in rush-<lb />
ing and sooring.<lb />
"Walter Moseley to me was<lb />
one of the finest prep point<lb />
guards available in the country<lb />
this year said Gillman. "I was<lb />
very impressed with Walter's<lb />
poise and leadership ability.<lb />
"Among the schools seeking<lb />
Walter were national champion<lb />
Marquette, Iowa, the University<lb />
of Arizona and Wisconsin.<lb />
we won that game, and I pitched<lb />
pretty well<lb />
For the year, Durham's record<lb />
stands at 5-3, with an E.R.A. of<lb />
2.70. He feels this championship<lb />
team is better than the '74 squad.<lb />
"We're much deeper in pitch-<lb />
ing than we were then he<lb />
stated. "There are four proven<lb />
starters this year, and a good<lb />
bullpen, whereas in '74, we had<lb />
basically a three man pitching<lb />
staff.<lb />
"There is also much more<lb />
team speed he added. "We<lb />
have been able to do many more<lb />
things at bat because of our<lb />
speed, it's incredible.<lb />
Durham says that although<lb />
this is the second time he has<lb />
been involved with a champion-<lb />
ship baseball team at East<lb />
Carolina, the title means more to<lb />
him this year.<lb />
"Since I am a senior related<lb />
Durham, "this championship is<lb />
always going to be special. I can<lb />
look back in future years and<lb />
remember that my last ECU<lb />
baseball team won the Southern<lb />
Conference championship.<lb />
"In 1974 he continued, "I<lb />
was just a freshman, and did not<lb />
get a great deal of playing time.<lb />
We went 12-2 in conference that<lb />
year and won the title going<lb />
away. This year, though, the<lb />
entire conference is much strong-<lb />
er. We had to win 15 out of 16<lb />
games just to win the conference<lb />
by one game<lb />
Even though the Pirates are<lb />
preparing to enter the NCAA<lb />
tournament with a 30-10 record,<lb />
there was a time when things did<lb />
not seem so rosy fa ECU. After<lb />
13 games, the team record was<lb />
7-6, and Monte Little's squad was<lb />
heading for a streak of 10 games<lb />
in 10 days.<lb />
"We all did a lot of re-<lb />
examining of ourselves at that<lb />
point reflected the tall right-<lb />
hander. "All of us knew that we<lb />
were better than 7-6, so the<lb />
seniors on the squad got together<lb />
and decided we'd lead by<lb />
example<lb />
They set a fine example for<lb />
the others, as the Pirates then set<lb />
off on a 14 game winning streak,<lb />
setting a new school record for<lb />
most consecutive wins. The<lb />
eventuality was the current 30-10<lb />
mark, and a berth in the Atlantic<lb />
Regionals of the NCAA tourna-<lb />
ment.<lb />
