UNC President addresses ECU faculty<lb />
Friday explains salary difference<lb />
ByNEILSESSOMS<lb />
Co-News Edita<lb />
William C. Friday, president<lb />
of the consolidated University of<lb />
Nath Carolina system, explained<lb />
Tuesday that the salary ceiling fa<lb />
faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill is<lb />
$4,400 mae than that fa ECU'S<lb />
professas because the universi-<lb />
ties are classed differently.<lb />
Friday addressed about 125<lb />
ECU faculty members in Men-<lb />
denhall Theater and fielded<lb />
questions fa nearly 30 minutes<lb />
afterward.<lb />
"The difference in the classes<lb />
is based on the doctaial level of<lb />
the institution said Friday while<lb />
responding to the question, did<lb />
he plan to eliminate the salary<lb />
difference?<lb />
He answered that he did.<lb />
In his address, Friday gave a<lb />
breakdown of the budget the<lb />
Advisay Budget canmittee will<lb />
recanmend to the legislature this<lb />
year.<lb />
He pointed out a proposed 10<lb />
per cent salary inaease fa ECU<lb />
professas each year fa the next<lb />
two years.<lb />
"This is the most we felt we<lb />
could ask fa said Friday.<lb />
When asked if any merit<lb />
qualifications would be attached<lb />
to the inaeases, Friday replied,<lb />
"We will have to wait and see<lb />
how much money we have to work<lb />
with<lb />
Accading to Friday, allot-<lb />
ments fa the ECU medical school<lb />
development will total $3.5 mil-<lb />
lion fa the first year and almost<lb />
$5.5 million the second.<lb />
He stated the budget would<lb />
include funds fa the improve-<lb />
ment of Pitt County Hospital and<lb />
The Wahl Coats Building.<lb />
Friday also mentioned the<lb />
replacement of Chancel la Leo<lb />
Jenkins when he retires at age 65.<lb />
He urged the faculty to take<lb />

Fayetteville Times editor<lb />
sets journalistic sights<lb />
By MONIKA SUTHERLAND<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
"Journalism is a basic insti-<lb />
tution in our country. It may not<lb />
always wak well, but it can wak<lb />
well. We (journalists) haven't<lb />
measured up to the qual ity we are<lb />
capable of achieving said Roy<lb />
Parker, Jr. edita of the Fayette-<lb />
ville Times.<lb />
Parker addressed journalism<lb />
classes during a two-day visit to<lb />
ECU earlier this week. Sponsaed<lb />
by the Wall Street Journal and<lb />
the Society of Collegiate Journal-<lb />
ists under a guest edita program,<lb />
Parker met with journalism stu-<lb />
dents and discussed trends in the<lb />
print media.<lb />
"New machines have made<lb />
writing on paper outdated. Now<lb />
type is done on computer key-<lb />
boards attached to scanners.<lb />
Even make-up can be done by<lb />
computer said Parker.<lb />
"Theaetically the process of<lb />
reporting and production is<lb />
speeded up giving newsroom<lb />
people mae time. It also replaces<lb />
people in the production area and<lb />
saves money<lb />
In five years 90 per cent of the<lb />
nation's newsrooms will be on<lb />
computer systems a in the<lb />
prooess of changing over to the<lb />
system, accading to Parker.<lb />
Because there is mae wak<lb />
fa reporters, there is a need fa<lb />
specialized knowledge.<lb />
"Repaters need to be spec-<lb />
ialists in a single field. The old<lb />
stay that a good repater can<lb />
cover anything and everything<lb />
doesn't always hold true now. It<lb />
takes specialists to give people<lb />
what they want Parker tad the<lb />

Anaher trend in the press<lb />
related to technological advance-<lb />
ment is the involvement of<lb />
businessmen.<lb />
"Many publishers are now<lb />
businessmen as they realize it is a<lb />
good investment. Newspapers<lb />
now make so much profit they<lb />
don't know what to do with it.<lb />
"I feel the money should be<lb />
spent in the newsroom. Print<lb />
journalism is an honaable but<lb />
low paying profession<lb />
Answering questions, Parker<lb />
told the group that consolidation<lb />
of papers helps but it can also<lb />
affect repating.<lb />
"We are at a recad low of<lb />
dailies in this country. Suburban<lb />
weeklies are growing. I don't<lb />
believe that they will replace<lb />
dailies, but dailies must improve<lb />
to compete said Parker.<lb />
"There is something to be<lb />
said fa both sides. Lack of<lb />
competitioi can affect quality<lb />
Parker founded the Fayette-<lb />
ville Times in a city which has an<lb />
afternoon paper owned by the<lb />
same publishers.<lb />
In responding to the question<lb />
does the press have too much<lb />
power in public affairs Parker<lb />
said "no<lb />
"I think the press has ?n<lb />
adinary job of presenting to the<lb />
public the realities of public<lb />
affairs. The press is a powerful<lb />
institution but it is not too<lb />
powerful. My writing hasn't<lb />
influenced the public, if anything<lb />
has it is the actions of those that I<lb />
cover<lb />
Parker is a graduate of the<lb />
University of North Carolina at<lb />
Chapel Hill. He has waked ai<lb />
the Hertford Herald, the Bertie<lb />
News and the Raleigh News and<lb />
Observer prior to becoming the<lb />

Dr. John East<lb />
Professor discusses<lb />
Republican convention<lb />
By SAM NEWELL<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Dr. John East, co-chairman of<lb />
the N.C. Republican party and<lb />
Political Science professor at ECU<lb />
last Tuesday night presented his<lb />
view of the Ford-Reagan fight at<lb />
the Republican National Convent-<lb />
ion and some problems faced by<lb />
the Ford campaign.<lb />
East, a Reagan delegate,<lb />
presented 15 of the 22 plans<lb />
eventually adopted in the Repub-<lb />
lican platform while he served on<lb />
the sub-committee on Foreign<lb />
Policy and Defense.<lb />
According to East, the in-<lb />
fluence of the Ford organization<lb />
was felt early in the convention<lb />
while the 'planks' were being<lb />
"tnrashed out" in sub-oornmtt-<lb />
tees. He said the Republican<lb />
National Committee decides who<lb />
is on the different committees and<lb />
thus has some initial control.<lb />
The Sub-committee on For-<lb />
eign Policy and Defense then had<lb />
to wait for a draft from the Ford<lb />
Organization and then could<lb />
change the wording if there were<lb />
enough votes.<lb />
The Foreign Policy and De-<lb />
fense Sub-committee was divided<lb />
with eight pro-Reagan and eight<lb />
pro-Fad members. The Ford<lb />
draft stood unless there were<lb />
enough Reagan votes to change<lb />
it, East said.<lb />
The main difference between<lb />
Ford and Reagan lies in Foreign<lb />
Policy considerations, East said,<lb />
such as the Panama Canal issue,<lb />
the Solzhenitsyn snub and Kiss-<lb />
inger.<lb />
East said the two camps were<lb />
basically united on domestic<lb />
issues except ERA and abortion.<lb />
"ERA is not a good example<lb />
because some Reagan supporters<lb />
were women for ERA East said.<lb />
"However the Ford camp was<lb />
generally supportive and the<lb />
Reagan forces were generally<lb />
opposed<lb />
East said the Reagan people<lb />
were anti-abortion and the Ford<lb />
people "were more lenient in<lb />
their attitude toward it<lb />
When asked if Reagan's at-<lb />
titude of legislating morality was<lb />
in oontradition with his desire to<lb />
curb government infringement in<lb />
private affairs, East replied that<lb />
Republicans "like individual<lb />
liberty people feel the govern-<lb />
ment has a right to protect them<lb />
and thus the fetus has a right to<lb />
protection from murder<lb />
In composing his planks East<lb />
said he retained some measure of<lb />
independence from the National<lb />
Reagan Organization.<lb />
"I came as an individual<lb />
delegate and did my own home-<lb />
work he said.<lb />
He said he was not at odds<lb />
with the Reagan National Organi-<lb />
zation because they were ail<lb />
working toward the seme end in<lb />
electing Reagan.<lb />
Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.<lb />
and a Reagan supporter) and the<lb />
North Carolina delegates appear-<lb />
ed before the Platform Committee<lb />
(106 delegates about evenly di-<lb />
vided in support) to ask that<lb />
East's proposals be seriously<lb />
considered.<lb />
According to East, the nomi-<lb />
nation of Sen. Richard Schweiker<lb />
as Reagan's running mate stop-<lb />
ped Reagan'scampaign "dead in<lb />
its tracks<lb />
East said that Reagan appeal-<lb />
ed to rank and file conservatives<lb />
because he is a man of integrity<lb />
who would "stick to his guns<lb />
East said the appointment of<lb />
Schweiker was at odds with<lb />
Reagan's image and was a' shock<lb />
treatment' designed to jar the<lb />
uncommitted delegates in hopes<lb />
they would approach his camp. It<lb />
was felt that after the committee<lb />
Reagan delegate! allowed their<lb />
dissatisfaction to cool "they<lb />
would settle down and work and<lb />
then the Pennsylvania delegates<lb />
would move" into the Reagan<lb />
forces, he said.<lb />
According to East, the move<lb />
backfired by allowing "soft con-<lb />
servative support (such as John<lb />
Connally, who was fearful of<lb />
Reagan's southern influence) an<lb />
excuse to move over to Fad.<lb />
FRIDAY<lb />

Aocading to Friday, the Se-<lb />
lection committee will consist of<lb />

dent of the Alumni Association,<lb />
the SGA president and the<lb />
chairperson of the Board of<lb />
Trustees who will serve as the<lb />
chairperson of the Selection ocm-<lb />
mittee.<lb />
Dr. A.K. King aooompanied<lb />
Friday and spoke briefly.<lb />
"The 100-plus maverick dele-<lb />
gates that tipped the balance<lb />
gave Fad the benefit of the doubt<lb />
because he was president<lb />
East said that Fad's incumb-<lb />
ency is helping him in his<lb />
campaign.<lb />
East feels the Fad campaign<lb />
has been basically successful in<lb />
attracting the famer Reagan<lb />
vote.<lb />
"This is because Fad was<lb />
never wholly unacceptable and<lb />
that if not fa Kissinger the<lb />
Reagan campaign would never<lb />
have gotten off square one East<lb />
said. "Also, the Reagan people<lb />
can see no purpose in boycotting<lb />
the election If Fad loess ail<lb />
they will have is a "pile of<lb />
ashes he said.<lb />
Aocading to some polls,<lb />
Mandate seems to be helping<lb />
Carter more than Dole is helping<lb />
Fad.<lb />
East said he felt Dole was a<lb />
good choice fa Fad and was a<lb />
"down to earth" person. He said<lb />
the polls may provide this re-<lb />
flection because Fad over-<lb />
shadows Dole who was less well<lb />

Pledge gets<lb />
bum wrap<lb />
College fraternities are noted for their mischievous<lb />
tricks and practical jokes. But, the incident early this<lb />
month in which several Kappa Alpha pledges are<lb />
suspected of rifling Aycock dorm for toilet paper goes<lb />
beyond simple pranksterism.<lb />
One fraternity pledge was apprehended during the<lb />
raid while several others who were in the suspect's car<lb />
escaped. The one pledge was caught because a<lb />
campus security offioer glimpsed the license number<lb />
on his car as he was driving away.<lb />
It would be difficult to prove to the judiciary of the<lb />
Interfraternity Council or to the Honor Council that the<lb />
others in the getaway car were without question also<lb />
KA pledges. Yet, considering the need that most<lb />
pledge classes have for extensive amounts of toilet<lb />
paper for rollng Sorority houses, it could be<lb />
reasonably concluded that it was a group effort. But<lb />
only one of the gang stands to take the guilty plunge.<lb />
Brotherhood carries different connotations for<lb />
various groups within the Ureek system, and this<lb />
incident seems to indicate that the KA's pledge class<lb />
of fall quarter 1976 has a pretty low regard for this<lb />
much-touted fraternity tenet.<lb />
Unless the others who were involved in the theft<lb />
'fess up to their crime, the one pledge apprehended<lb />
will face criminal punishment (according to reports,<lb />
the security officer was nearly struck by the suspect's<lb />
escape vehicle) if Security Chief Joe Calder decides to<lb />
press a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.<lb />
Bigger not better<lb />
The $.5 million remodeling of the Student Supply<lb />
Store, which is to begin this year will help to remedy<lb />
but one of the store'slimitations that is an aggravation<lb />
to students.<lb />
Just about anyone who has tried to sell books back<lb />
to the supply store has been confronted with abysmal<lb />
value placed on used books. Students are often told<lb />
they should be grateful they are getting anything back<lb />
for some " nonreusable" texts 50 cents for a $15<lb />
boiogy book? Let's be fair.<lb />
If that's not bad enough, the supply store will not<lb />
give full refunds on books after September 20 of the<lb />
fell quarter even thougn arop-add period does not end<lb />
intil October 7. Their rationale: it would require too<lb />
rruch administrative attention.<lb />
Before building a bigger bookstore, why not let's<lb />
serve students fairly in all aspects.<lb />

I am writing you to air my<lb />
personal feelings regarding a<lb />
photograph which appeared in<lb />
the new yearbook, on page 21.<lb />
The photograph shows an art<lb />
student (Gary Phillips) painting<lb />
on a canvas in the painting studio<lb />
in Jenkins Art building. The<lb />
problem is that the painting is not<lb />
his work, but mine. I am a<lb />
graduating senior in the painting<lb />
dept. and I am currently hanging<lb />
my senior show in Joyner Library<lb />
from (Oct. 17-24) and the painting<lb />
in the photograph is in my show.<lb />
For one thing, nobody should<lb />
paint on someone elses work of<lb />
art, for this is an insult to the<lb />
artist. Also they should know not<lb />
to submit to having their picture<lb />
taken in the act of painting on<lb />

I would like to comment on<lb />
Pegie Quinn's reply to Raymond<lb />
Neal Unville's letter concerning<lb />
the use of barbed wire on the<lb />
shrubbery around the campus.<lb />
Pegie Quinn has missed Mr.<lb />
Unville's point completely. Mr.<lb />
Linville is not against protecting<lb />
our shrubs, grass, flowers, etc.<lb />
His concern is that the method;<lb />
used to protect the plants (i.e<lb />
stringed barbed wire) does not<lb />
protect human life. This is an<lb />
example of "OVER KILL ana-<lb />
logous to dropping atomic bombs<lb />
on people to prevent jaywalking.<lb />
Pegie, I am as ooncerned about<lb />
our campus appearance as you<lb />
are, but I feel, as Mr. Linville<lb />
does, that the university's<lb />
methods of protecting the campus<lb />
grounds are exoessive. You could<lb />
also prevent people from walking<lb />
on the grass by hiring snipers to<lb />
mmmmmammmmmmmmm<lb />
shoot them, but this is not a<lb />
rational approach to solving the<lb />
problem, and neither is barbed<lb />
wire!<lb />
We do not have to enjoy our<lb />
feedom at the expense of mother<lb />
nature. We should not be forced<lb />
to enjoy mother nature at the<lb />
expense of human pain and<lb />
suffering caused by barbed wire.<lb />

GREAT sets expansion sights<lb />
By BRENDA NORRIS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
A recommendation to expand<lb />
Greenville's "GREAT Transit<lb />
System was presented to the<lb />
City Council Wednesday, Oct. 13,<lb />
at 8 p.m. in City Hall.<lb />
"I expect us to have enough<lb />
information by then to make a<lb />
recommendation to the council<lb />
said Linda Hix, chairperson of the<lb />
Greenville Public Transportation<lb />
Commission. "Future plans will<lb />
largely be determined on the<lb />
thirteenth<lb />
According to Hix, Saturday<lb />
service and the extension of<lb />
evening hours until 7 p.m. and<lb />
top priorities for expansion plans.<lb />
Servioe to the east end is the<lb />
third priority said Hix. "But<lb />
that will oome later because it<lb />
requires buying another bus<lb />
"These expansion services<lb />
are considered first because we<lb />
have received more requests for<lb />
these three than any other said<lb />
Hix.<lb />
"If the City Council approves<lb />
Saturday and evening services<lb />
next Wednesday, the services<lb />
cannot be implemented until the<lb />
first of November said Hix.<lb />
"We need at least three weeks to<lb />
hire and train drivers, and to set<lb />
up schedules and pick-up<lb />
points<lb />
According to John Schofieid,<lb />
city planner, Alan M. Voorhees<lb />
and Associates, Inc is conduc-<lb />
ting the last of three studies on<lb />
the Greenville transit system.<lb />
"These studies are pre-<lb />
requisites for receiving federal<lb />
grants said Schofieid.<lb />
The Voorhees reports are<lb />
being financed through grants<lb />
from the U.S. Department of<lb />
Transportation, the Urban Mass<lb />
Transportation Administration<lb />
(UMTA), and in part by the city of<lb />
Greenville.<lb />
"So far, the 'GREAT' system<lb />
has been funded by revenue<lb />
sharing said Hix. "If the<lb />
council decides it cannot meet<lb />
funding out of non-tax revenues,<lb />
the funding will then have to go to<lb />
the citizens of Greenville in a<lb />
referendum<lb />
The first of the Voorhees<lb />
studies analyzed the needs for a<lb />
transit system in Greenville. The<lb />
second study suggested five<lb />
expansion alternatives.<lb />
"Of these five alternatives, I<lb />
think we will decide on one of the<lb />
first three, because the second<lb />
two dial-a-rides are too expen-<lb />
sive said Schofieid.<lb />
The first alternative would<lb />
add one bus to the present system<lb />
and would provide most of the<lb />
service west of downtown where<lb />
the needs are greatest.<lb />
The second alternative would<lb />
add two buses to the present<lb />
system and would provide radial<lb />
type ooverage to Greenville. The<lb />
system would extend past Nichols<lb />
Department Store, an area which<lb />
receives no servioe now.<lb />
The third system would add<lb />
three buses and incorporate the<lb />
ECU Student Government Asso-<lb />
ciation Transit System.<lb />
The Voorhees study provides<lb />
maps and lists benefits and costs<lb />
fa all these alternatives.<lb />
"We will probably recom-<lb />
mend a variation to the Vorhees<lb />
plans said Hix. "We are using<lb />
their proposals basically as a<lb />
guideline or a starting point to<lb />
decide where we go from here.<lb />
"If the council approves our<lb />
recommendations Wednesday,<lb />
then the Voorhees Commission<lb />
will write a final report containing<lb />
a draft of the federal grant. The<lb />
report then goes to UMTA and<lb />
they will decide if they will fund<lb />
the capital costs of the proposed<lb />
expansion plan<lb />
Capital oosts include the pur-<lb />
chase of new buses, signs,<lb />
shelters, garage facilities, and<lb />
spare parts.<lb />
"If the expansion plans are<lb />
approved by UMTA, Greenville<lb />
will recieve 80 percent of capital<lb />
costs from federal funds and 10 to<lb />
15 percent from state funds<lb />
said Schofieid. "This leaves a<lb />
relatively small amount for<lb />
Greenville to have to pay<lb />
Aocording to Hix, it will take<lb />
from six to 18 months to receive<lb />
the grants onoe the City Council<lb />
has approved an expansion plan.<lb />
"The study now being con-<lb />
ducted by the Voorhees Commis-<lb />
sion (Short Range Transportation<lb />
Development Program), refers to<lb />
a five year study on the growth of<lb />
Greenville. It looks at all the<lb />
different needs and aspects of the<lb />
city said Hix.<lb />
"This report will cover much<lb />
more information than the first<lb />

Gray, Dean of the ECU School of<lb />
Art.<lb />
"With the addition, the build-<lb />

the Dining Hall Building and<lb />
Phase I of the Jenkins building<lb />
said Gray.<lb />
"With this expansion, we will<lb />

Ford regrets losing Butz 'support<lb />
(LNS)ln one of my saddest<lb />
decisions President Ford was<lb />
forced to accept the October 4<lb />
resignation of Earl L. Butz after<lb />
the Agriculture Department Sec-<lb />
retary's violently racist and<lb />
sexist remarks made headlines<lb />
throughout the oountry.<lb />
Fords "sadness" may be<lb />
based on his heavy reliance on<lb />
Butz to help him stomp the<lb />
midwest for vital support from the<lb />
area's farmers in the pesidential<lb />
campaign.<lb />
In his statement to Ford, Butz<lb />
claimed that his "use of a bad<lb />
racial commentary in no way<lb />
reflects my real attitude But his<lb />
words leave no room for specula-<lb />
tion.<lb />
Although Butz'sexact phrases<lb />
were recorded in The Polling<lb />
Stone, the establishment press<lb />
generously paraphrased the<lb />
former official's words with such<lb />
phrases as "satisfying sex and<lb />
indoor plumbing<lb />
. However if the press cleanup<lb />
of Butz's language left any<lb />
questions as to their racist nature,<lb />
his activities while in offioe leave<lb />
no doubts. An October 5 article in<lb />
French language courses diverse,<lb />
offer black-French literature<lb />
Students in French language<lb />
courses at ECU are presently<lb />
learning about the cultures of<lb />
French-speaking nations in addi-<lb />
tion to their studies of the culture<lb />
of France itself.<lb />
This new diversity in empha-<lb />
sis is the result of "Franco-<lb />
phonie an approach to French<lb />
studies which examines the litera-<lb />
ture of French-speaking writers<lb />
not only of France but places<lb />
outside France.<lb />
"Recent French literature ori-<lb />
ginates from all parts of the<lb />
world said Dr. Nicole Aronson,<lb />
professor of French at ECU.<lb />
"Our curriculum is involved<lb />
not only with French culture, but<lb />
also the cultures of Belgium and<lb />
Switzerland, Vietnam, the Middle<lb />
East, northern African nations,<lb />
Canada and even the state of<lb />
Louisiana.<lb />
"All these regions have pro-<lb />
duced their own particular contri-<lb />
butions to French language and<lb />
literature, in serious prose, in folk<lb />
tales and fables, and in poetry.<lb />
"Students find more rele-<lb />
vanoe and gain a greater under-<lb />
standing of civilization when they<lb />
are exposed to the French lan-<lb />
guage of the millions of French-<lb />
speaking people outside of<lb />
France she said.<lb />
Perhaps the most exciting<lb />
discoveries to be made through<lb />
" Franoophonie" are the contem-<lb />
porary black writers of former<lb />
French colonies in the West<lb />
Indies and Africa-writers who, in<lb />
addition to their own native<lb />
tongues, have used their profi-<lb />
ciency in French to reach a wide<lb />
public.<lb />
During the winter quarter, Dr.<lb />
Aronson is scheduled to teach an<lb />
English-language course, "Black<lb />
French Literature in Transla-<lb />
tion which is designed to<lb />
introduoe students who do not<lb />
read French to the wealth of<lb />
recent black writing.<lb />
"The black literature course<lb />
will be offered by the foreign<lb />
language department as part of<lb />
ECU'S program in African Stud-<lb />
ies she noted. "We hope that it<lb />
will increase students' awareness<lb />
of the great beauty and profound<lb />
ideas to be found in the work of<lb />
modern black French literature<lb />
Literary works to be studied in<lb />
the course will portray the entire<lb />
range of the black experience:<lb />
violence and revolution against<lb />
slavery, lyric poetic tributes to<lb />
nature in tropical settings, and<lb />
thoughtful examinations of politi-<lb />
cal and social conditions in the<lb />
emerging black nations.<lb />
"We are pleased to be able to<lb />
offer the class as a step toward<lb />
closing an awkward gap in the<lb />
knowledge of most Americans.<lb />
With the recent increase of<lb />
awareness of black culture, the<lb />
time is right for serious study of<lb />
the rich abundance of material<lb />
written by French-speaking black<lb />
writers<lb />
the Los Angeles Times quoted<lb />
Agriculture Department sources<lb />
revealing that Butz held secret<lb />
meetings to advise state officials<lb />
and subordinates how to "get<lb />
around federal civil rights 'aws"<lb />
to avoid hiring blacks.<lb />
According to the L.A. Times,<lb />
Butz met twioe with officials from<lb />
seven states to advise them how<lb />
to get around discrimination laws<lb />
whose violation threatened the<lb />
cut-off of federal funds for state<lb />
farm-related services. The states<lb />
faced these cut-offs for maintain-<lb />
ing segregated dubs, employing<lb />
few blacks in positions of respons-<lb />
ibility, and paying blacks less<lb />
than whites for the same jobs.<lb />
A former member of the<lb />
federal Civil Rights Commission<lb />
was quoted in an article as saying<lb />
that under Butz, the Department<lb />
of Agriculture had "one of the<lb />
most appalling civil rights records<lb />
in the oountry<lb />
"I don't think that Butz is a<lb />
bigot said John A. Knebel,<lb />
acting Secretary of Agriculture<lb />
since Butz's ouster. "Frankly, I<lb />
think he is a patriot<lb />
Butz admitted to interviewer<lb />
Barbara Walters that he had told<lb />
the same "joke" many times to<lb />
farm groups.<lb />

Students who have attended<lb />

Through the relatively new<lb />

10 ECU oo-eds were placed this<lb />
summer in various office posi-<lb />

"summer money these girls<lb />
also obtained valuable work ex-<lb />
perience as they observed and<lb />
participated in the operation of<lb />
government agencies.<lb />
Of the 10 girls who worked in<lb />
Washington this summer, five<lb />
worked with NASA. Annette<lb />
Franke, a business education<lb />

department of NASA, and was<lb />
partly involved in plans<lb />
sucn as designing and imple-<lb />

all the position descriptions at<lb />
NASA headquarters. Annette al-<lb />

She was first placed with NASA<lb />

Maria said her oo-op experi-<lb />

could gear my courses to the job I<lb />
would, like to be employed in<lb />
she said.<lb />
"Before I worked with NASA,<lb />
I was a German major, now I'm<lb />
majoring in political science al-<lb />
so<lb />
Lynn Hanold also worked with<lb />
the Office of International Affairs<lb />
at NASA headquarters. Lynn, a<lb />
French major, said her summer<lb />
job was so varied that it is difficult<lb />
to answer that often asked<lb />
question, "What did you do?"<lb />
"One minute I would be<lb />
arranging for an interpreter to be<lb />
at one of our meetings with the<lb />
Soviets, then I would be off to a<lb />
meeting to learn what NASA's<lb />
involvement with another inter-<lb />
national agency is, and then I<lb />
would be writing a report on the<lb />
scientific experiments launched<lb />
on a particular spacecraft she<lb />
said.<lb />
Since her summer work ex-<lb />
perience Lynn has graduated and<lb />
was hired by NASA.<lb />
Robin McKee, a student in the<lb />
Department of Foreign Lang-<lb />
uages and Literature, worked at<lb />
the Pentagon this summer in a<lb />
position equivalent to an intern-<lb />
ship in business administration.<lb />
This position is designed to help<lb />
recruit college students for<lb />
government work. Robin felt she<lb />
got an overview of the Air Force's<lb />
systems for filing, distribution,<lb />
and correspondence.<lb />
Susan Mize and Susan Huf-<lb />
ford were both employed by the<lb />
Naval Air Systems Command.<lb />
Susan Hufford, a psychology<lb />
major, worked with the Air-<lb />
launched Guided Missiles Branch<lb />
in the Department of the Navv.<lb />
Diane Harris was aJso grad-<lb />

NASA. SHe worked with the<lb />
Public Affairs Division where she<lb />
was responsible for organizing<lb />
invitations to guests to attend the<lb />
first telecasts of the Viking<lb />
landing. She also arranged for<lb />
appearances by the astronauts<lb />
and organized and filed letters<lb />
from citizens who wanted inform-<lb />
ation about NASA and its pro-<lb />
grams.<lb />
Linda McLawhorn, a business<lb />
education major, was graduated<lb />
also and is currently a business<lb />
teacher in Tarboro, N.C. Linda<lb />
participated in the NASA co-op<lb />
job this summer because she said<lb />
she felt the office experience<lb />
would be valuable to her teach-<lb />
ing.<lb />
Jan Masters "co-opped" this<lb />
summer in the Department of<lb />
Health, Education and Welfare.<lb />
Jan, an office administration<lb />
major, performed such secretarial<lb />
duties as taking dictation, typing,<lb />
distributing mail in the office,<lb />
setting up appointments,<lb />
answering phones, using xerox<lb />
machines and running errands.<lb />
"I mainly interviewed appli-<lb />
cants and reviewed applications<lb />
for secretarial positions at NASA.<lb />
I also sat on panels to rank and<lb />
rate highly qualified candidates<lb />
for final selection she said.<lb />
Susan Mize, a senior psycho-<lb />
logy major, worked fa Civilian<lb />
Personnel in the Department of<lb />
the Navy. Her duties included<lb />
typing, answering phones and<lb />
sending out appraisals to former<lb />
supervisors. "One big skill I<lb />
picked up was learning how to<lb />
program and use a oomputer<lb />
terminal she said.<lb />
Due to her job experience,<lb />
Susan also came to form some<lb />
rather critical opinions of the way<lb />
government works. "The biggest<lb />
faults I could see were associated<lb />
with the lack of communication,<lb />
poor organization, and extreme<lb />
and senseless waste of everything<lb />
-material and manpower she<lb />
said<lb />
Janet Helbig, a senior in off ioe<lb />
administration, had a somewhat<lb />
different experience from the<lb />
other Washington girls by<lb />
working in the office of Congress<lb />
man Walter B. Jones of North<lb />
Carolina. Her main responsibi-<lb />
lities were taking dictation and<lb />
transcribing, filing, answering<lb />
the phone, and operating a mag<lb />
card machine, a piece of equip-<lb />
ment which types at the speed of<lb />
325 words per minute, she said.<lb />
Though not one of this sum-<lb />
mer's Washington crew, Nancy<lb />
Buzzelli has the distinction of<lb />
being the first business education<lb />
student to represent ECU in a<lb />
co-op slot in the Personnel<lb />
Division of NASA. Nancy's posi-<lb />
tion, she explained, was a secre-<lb />
tarial recruiterplacement trainee.<lb />
Vaccine<lb />
Shots<lb />
available<lb />
Students may receive the<lb />
Swine Flu vaccination in the ECU<lb />
infirmary as long as the supply<lb />
lasts, according to Dr. Fred Irons,<lb />
,Head of Student Health Services.<lb />
"There is a limited supply for<lb />
high risk students with disabling<lb />
illnesses, such as chronic lung<lb />
disease, heart disease, paralysis,<lb />
etc said Irons.<lb />
"As long as we have the<lb />
supply, we will be glad to give. It<lb />
is given on a first-oome, first-<lb />
serve basis<lb />
According to Irons, there is no<lb />
danger involved in receiving the<lb />
vaccination. "We were told to go<lb />
ahead with it Irons said.<lb />
There are certain precautions<lb />
involved, however. Students who<lb />

All the<lb />
President's<lb />

By PA T COYLE<lb />
Trends Edita<lb />
In case you didn't know, we are going to elect the President of the<lb />
United States in just a few weeks. (If you DIDN'T know, you should be<lb />
ashamed of your semi-oollege educated self.) I've tried very hard to be<lb />
well-infamed about the two maja candidates, to read everything I oould<lb />
about them to be on top of the issues.<lb />
The only problem is the fact that there are no issues, a at least none<lb />
that are what oie might call vital. This campaign seems to be based on<lb />
some pretty bizarre " maja faetas like whose kids are the cutest, and<lb />
whose wife can dance best.<lb />
Anyone who followed the Democratic Conventioi was faoed to<lb />
spend literally hours looking at little Amy Carter, and listening to Miss<lb />
Lill'in and Rosalynn saying "Jimmy is a good may-un, he will be good<lb />
fa the You-nited States<lb />
The Republicans were a tiny bit less campy, but still on the same<lb />
basic track. It was a real political landmark to see Betty Fad doing the<lb />
hustle with Tony Orlando, in front of the country's most important<lb />
GOP's.<lb />
The question this brings us to is: just how impotant is the<lb />
candidate's family in a political campaign? Does it really matter where<lb />
Jack Fad (who I think is adaable) parts his hair? Does America care to<lb />
see Amy Carter ripping off netwak newsmen at her lemonade stand?<lb />
Could this nation identify with a candidate who either has no family<lb />
whatsoever, a who chooses to leave them at home while he works<lb />
toward the presidency?<lb />
If you ask me, the answer is no. When you get down to basics,<lb />
politics are a pretty dull affair. The issues make fa good bedtime<lb />
reading, ESPECIALLY if you've been having trouble with insomnia. The<lb />
only viable means of getting any significant number of the populus<lb />
involved in the campaign is to interest them, and to give them something<lb />
with which to identify. If you keep this in mind, you can understand why<lb />
the families of candidates are such an obvious selling point fa aspiring<lb />
pditicos.<lb />
The campaign really puts a strain on the families, without a doubt.<lb />
They are expected to look their very best anytime the're in public. Betty<lb />
and Susan can hardly run to the oaner grocery in their Goody rollers,<lb />
and Rosalynn has the monumental job of making sure Amy's nose is<lb />
never running on the podium.<lb />
The Fad kids can never hang around at McDonalds, trying to get in<lb />
on a little action, and NOBODY can smoke a cigarette if there's even a<lb />
vague chance of being seen by the nosy cameras of newspapers and<lb />
net woks.<lb />
The candidates and their families have to watch their tongues at all<lb />
times. When they make an appearance at a football game, they must<lb />
abstain from throwing obscenities at the opposing team. In fact, they<lb />
can't even root fa any team in particular.<lb />
Life in the public eye has a lot of advantages, no doubt about it. It<lb />
would be fun to be treated like a VIP everywhere you go. It would be nice<lb />
to have a staff of aides willing to go get you a Coke and a Moonpie<lb />
whenever you so desire.<lb />
As glamourous and exciting as the whole deal is, I don't really think<lb />
I'd do well as a candidate o as a candidates relative. I'd hate to give up<lb />
my const it utional right to wear a bandanna when I am too lazy to wash<lb />
my hair, and I'll never have the self-control it takes to smile fa 17 hours<lb />
straight.<lb />

Byrd Trio lacks dynamic<lb />
expression during concert<lb />
By SAM COLLIER<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Charlie Byrd Trio played<lb />
to a near-capacity audience in<lb />
Mendenhall Theatre last Thurs-<lb />
day night, in a concert lavishly<lb />
endowed with picked guitar<lb />
notes. Unfortunately, there is<lb />
more to music than noes.<lb />
The first half of the concert<lb />
consisted of pop music played by<lb />
the entire trio in the distinctive<lb />
Charlie Byrd style. This style is<lb />
familiar to anyone who has been<lb />
in a department stoe, restaurant,<lb />
a shop where background music<lb />
plays. This music is programmed<lb />
to have few changes in dynamic<lb />
level because customers aren't<lb />
supposed to be oonsciously aware<lb />
of the music.<lb />
In a concert, however, the<lb />
main focus is on the music, and so<lb />
v<lb />
SWEET JUDY BLUE EYES will appear in ooncert tonight at 8.00 at<lb />
Minges Coliseum. All tickets at the door are $5, a small price to pay<lb />
fa an evening with the finest and purest music around. Get there<lb />
early, so you can get a good seat!<lb />
the role of dynamic levels is the<lb />
music. The Byrd Trio lacked the<lb />
expression with dynamics needed<lb />
fo a captivating concert. Each<lb />
member of the trio also took a few<lb />
turns at running away with the<lb />
tempo, Byrd speeding up on the<lb />
most demanding guitar passages.<lb />
The first half ended with each<lb />
member of the trio perfoming<lb />
interesting solos. The bass guitar-<lb />
ist incopoated a passage of<lb />
string harmonics into his solo,<lb />
and the drummer played his solo<lb />
first with just his hands, then with<lb />
one hand and one stick, then with<lb />
both sticks. The effect was great,<lb />
despite the sympathetic ainges of<lb />
pain the audience felt when the<lb />
drummer slapped a cymbal.<lb />
Charlie Byrd began the se-<lb />
cond half by playing classical<lb />
guitar solos. Although his expres-<lb />
sion here was better than in the<lb />
first half, he lacked sensitivity<lb />
needed to really express the<lb />
delicate classical woks.<lb />
Byrd made a smooth transi-<lb />
tion from a Villa-Lobos Etude to<lb />
the Hoagy Carmichael tune from<lb />
the 1930s "Stardust which<lb />
Byrd picked in a slightly classical<lb />
style. The other members of the<lb />
trio having returned to the stage,<lb />
he moved into '70's music with<lb />
Moris Albert's "Feelings" and<lb />
then to a Charlie Byrd standard,<lb />
"Goin' Out of My Head<lb />
It wasaconcert quite soothing<lb />
to savage beasts. The people<lb />
there enjoyed it also, though few<lb />
were totally enthralled.<lb />

Clapton has No Reason to Cry<lb />
By MICHAELFUTCH<lb />
Assistant Trends Editor<lb />
There is an existing history<lb />
idea that history repeats itself.<lb />
This idea might apply for the<lb />
sudden re-appearance of many of<lb />
the "music heavies" of the '60s.<lb />
Those musicians which had such<lb />
a large influence socially as wellas<lb />
musically in the transformative<lb />
last decade, have productively<lb />
re-emerged from their stalemate<lb />
condition.<lb />
Whether for personal and<lb />
economic reasons anda the<lb />
realization of just how terrible the<lb />
contemporary music that's being<lb />
recycled to the blind audience and<lb />
a self-made goal to improve the<lb />
state, it is not important.<lb />
What is important is that<lb />
they have become productive<lb />
again.<lb />
Bob Dylan is releasing music<lb />
at a torrid pace, four LPs (2 live)<lb />
since '74. He has also appeared<lb />
on two television programs in as<lb />
many years.<lb />
George Harrison is reliably<lb />
now releasing an album a year.<lb />
He also made a '73 US tour, as<lb />
did his former band associate,<lb />
Paul McCartney, in '76.<lb />
Neil Young may be taking it to<lb />
extremes by flooding the market<lb />
with music. Since his release of<lb />
ON THE BEACH in the summer<lb />
of '74, he's hurled four LPs at us,<lb />
and also has enough tape in the<lb />
can to make Reprise millions if he<lb />
should ever cease to function.<lb />
The Grateful ead continue to<lb />
exist and release solo and projects<lb />
as well as group work. Garcia and<lb />
company will probably still be<lb />
with us when San Francisco takes<lb />
back its music center crown.<lb />
This takes us to Eric Clapton,<lb />
the white blues guitarist's guitar-<lb />
ist, amply matter of fact, he was<lb />
and still isthe master. The man is<lb />
a legend and can still play with the<lb />
authority of a great blues man.<lb />
When seen alive, he has that<lb />
presence which only a few<lb />
possess. He grasps your attention<lb />
from the moment he makes his<lb />
stage debut to the final encore.<lb />
It's an aura of unbelievable<lb />
human talent. Clapton grabs,<lb />
hurts, burns and elevates one all<lb />
at different times. The man has<lb />
the knack for making his guitar<lb />
ay and it don't come easy.<lb />
Eric Clapton has been around<lb />
for a long time. He's come a long<lb />
way since learning to play his first<lb />
tune, Chuck Berry's "Little<lb />
Queenie He has also played<lb />
with some of the best along the<lb />
way: John Mayall, Jack Bruce<lb />
and Ginger Baker, Steve Win-<lb />
wood, Howlin' Wolf, Champion<lb />
Jack Dupree, The Beatles (espec-<lb />
ially linked with Harrison),<lb />
Duane Allman, Freddy King and<lb />
the list could goon.<lb />
Clapton has also hit stride and<lb />
released a lot of music since his<lb />
self-inflicted isolation due to<lb />
smack. Since 1974, 'slow hands'<lb />
has given the world three studio<lb />
LPs and a brilliant live blues<lb />
album, EC WAS HERE. None<lb />
have been a LA YLA, but none will<lb />
ever match its perfection.<lb />
LA YLA, always to be compared to<lb />
his other work is simply the<lb />
definite bluesrock album; a<lb />
masterpiece in a masterpiece<lb />
rarity music field.<lb />
It is ironic that Clapton<lb />
produces his finest material when<lb />
under pressure from stiff com-<lb />
petition or when associating with<lb />
equal talent: Clapton and Harri-<lb />
son on "Badge" and "While My<lb />
Guitar Gently Weeps Clapton<lb />
and Mayal! on BLUESBREAK-<lb />
ERS, Clapton and Allman on<lb />
LAYLA, Clapton and Windwcod<lb />
on " I n the Presence of the Lord<lb />
Clapton and Bramlett on "Let It<lb />
Rain and Clapton and Cream on<lb />
"Crossroads" and "White<lb />
Room<lb />
This'pressure' evaded him on<lb />
his first two post-smack studio<lb />
albums. There were flashes of<lb />
brilliance only to be juxtaposed<lb />
with evident weaknesses. 461<lb />
OCEAN BOULEVARD and<lb />
THERE'S ONE IN EVERY<lb />
CROWD were good, but yet not<lb />
so good. Critics blasted him from<lb />
holding back with guitar extrava-<lb />
gance. "The Clapton" responded<lb />
with the weighty live LP that gave<lb />
his audience what thev wanted<lb />
and more. Now, with his new<lb />
studio effort, NO REASON TO<lb />
CRY, Clapton returns to an<lb />
overall laid back style as before,<lb />
but without the reggae influence.<lb />
The man definitely has no<lb />
reason to ay here. Clapton has a<lb />
little help from his friends: Dylan,<lb />
The Band, Ron Wood of The<lb />
Stones, session man Jesse Ed<lb />
Davis and a cast of thousands,<lb />
besides his reliable touring band<lb />
of '74 and '75. The influence is<lb />
there for a brilliant album;<lb />
however, it falls short of this<lb />
achievement and rests comfort-<lb />
ably in an above average position.<lb />
Strange, Clapton sheds regu-<lb />
lar Tom Dowd of the production<lb />
work on this LP in favor of Rob<lb />
Fraboni, in association with long<lb />
time bass player Carl Radle and<lb />
himself. This is the first depart-<lb />
ure from Dowd since the weak<lb />
and unnecessary RAINBOW<lb />
CONCERT album.<lb />
The Band influence is evident<lb />
on the opener, "Beautiful<lb />
Thing Could this possibly be<lb />
due to their assistance on this<lb />
number and due to the fact that it<lb />
was co-written by Richard<lb />
Manuel and Rick Danko? The<lb />
ever-present Band style with<lb />
organ filler emerges here. Clap-<lb />
ton relies on slide and trades licks<lb />
with whom could either be Robbie<lb />
Robertson, Ron Wood, or even<lb />
himself tracked over.<lb />
"Carnival" is a Clapton rock<lb />
er that grabs from the first. The<lb />
lyrics are trite but the rhythm<lb />
carries on. Yvonne Elliman and<lb />
Marcy Levy add some female<lb />
background as they did on the<lb />
first number. The percussion is<lb />
very much intact on the track and<lb />
the guitar work deserves a gold<lb />
star; there are some fine guitar<lb />
licks mixed down for intentional<lb />
reasons.<lb />
Bob Dylan wrote and appears<lb />
on "Sign Language the third<lb />
cut on the album. It makes me<lb />
wonder why "Clapper" even<lb />
included this number. Clapton<lb />
played on the original version of<lb />
"Hurricane" off Dylan'sDESIRE<lb />
album; Dylan saapped it for the<lb />
released version. The vocals by<lb />
Clapton and Dylan are primitively<lb />
mixed together and at times<lb />
difficult to understand. It is a<lb />
good song and deserves ap-<lb />
pearance, not just because of its<lb />
writer and his vocal contribution.<lb />
Dylan's choppy guitar work is<lb />
mixed well against acoustic slide<lb />
by Clapton.<lb />
"County Jail Blues" fails to<lb />
go anywhere. Clapton delivers an<lb />
nusuallydeep vocal on this song.<lb />
He lays down some slide that<lb />
goes nowhere until the end and it<lb />
consequently fades out.<lb />
Clapton gives Buck Owens<lb />
some stiff competition on "All<lb />
Our Past Times The tune was<lb />
co-written bv Clapton and Danko<lb />

Long anticipated albums bomb<lb />
By CHRIS FARREN<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
EARTH, WIND& FIRE<lb />
SPIRIT<lb />
After much anticipation and<lb />
weeks of false release dates,<lb />
Earth Wind and Fire's latest,<lb />
SPIRIT, finally made it to the<lb />
reoord oounters much to the<lb />
excitement of the general public.<lb />
However, while Earth Wind and<lb />
Fire continues to reign as Ameri-<lb />
ca's premier soul band, I'm not<lb />
sure the album was really worth<lb />
the wait.<lb />
Earth Wind and Fire's music<lb />
centers around rhythm as evi-<lb />
denced by the seven percussion-<lb />
ists in the band. However,<lb />
previously the thing that had<lb />
separated Earth Wind and Fire<lb />
from every other soulful rhythm<lb />
band around had been their use of<lb />
more oomplex melodies and chord<lb />
structure. Subsequently, while<lb />
the rhythmic syncopation, vocal<lb />
harmonies, and tight production<lb />
prevail on SPIRIT, the songs lack<lb />
the melodic uniqueness that had<lb />
onoe blessed Earth Wind and<lb />
Fire's music.<lb />
This is not to say that the<lb />
album is filled with nine rhythm-<lb />
ically solid but melodically boring<lb />
songs. There most definitely is<lb />
some first rate material on the<lb />
album. Listen to the clarity of the<lb />
vocals on "Imagination" or just<lb />
the general production of "Burn-<lb />
ing Bush" and try to classify<lb />
them as something other than<lb />
superb. However an album can-<lb />
not be carried by a couple of good<lb />
songs. Whereas previous<lb />
material by Earth Wind and Fire<lb />
was equally at home in the disoos<lb />
or on the living room turntable,<lb />
SPIRIT belongs on the dance<lb />
floor, and tends to make Earth<lb />
Wind and Fire sound like just<lb />
another soul band, which both<lb />
you and I know they are not.<lb />
J.J. CALE-TROUBADOUR<lb />
J.J. Cale is alive and picking.<lb />
His extended absence from the<lb />
music business had led many of<lb />
us to believe he had decided to<lb />
pursue a new career, and after<lb />
listening to his latest effort,<lb />
TROUBADOUR, maybe that<lb />
wouldn't have been such a bad<lb />
idea. It must be noted that Caie's<lb />
appeal has never been wide-<lb />
spread and those who have liked<lb />
him will probably always like him.<lb />
However, no aspect of his latest<lb />
effort could be labeled a success.<lb />
The album is oomposed of<lb />
twelve blues cuts which vary very<lb />
little stylistically. The songs are<lb />
not strong enough to stand alone,<lb />
and J.Js whining vocals are of<lb />
little help to their cause. Whereas<lb />
in his previous efforts J.J. was<lb />
able to salvage much of his work<lb />
with some fine guitar solos,<lb />
TROUBA DOUR oontains very few<lb />
guitar leads at all, and the ones<lb />
that are there are not particularly<lb />
flattering to Cale. The product-<lb />
ion , while in some cases is about<lb />
the only effective device on the<lb />
album, often borders on being<lb />
sloppy, thus losing any leverage it<lb />
might have gained. Yes, J.J. Cale<lb />
is back with a new album, but<lb />
don't get too excited.<lb />
CLAPTON<lb />
Continued from page 10.)<lb />
and is one of the highlights on<lb />
this Dylan Band influenced side<lb />
one. Clapton gives us a oountry<lb />
side never shown before and gets<lb />
away with it: "I don't care how<lb />
much I've lostYou know I don't<lb />
oount the lossas long as I can see<lb />
your face again<lb />
Side two opens with the<lb />
single, "Hello Old Friend<lb />
Another Clapton rocker of sorts, it<lb />
relies a great deal on organ and<lb />
percussion. Elliman and Levy<lb />
again add the needed female<lb />
touch on background.<lb />
"Double Trouble an Otis<lb />
Rush tune, is the definite spark<lb />
on this incoherent album. I oould<lb />
swear it was taken from the John<lb />
M aval I BLUESBREAKER LP that<lb />
was released in January of 1967,<lb />
back when Clapton played only<lb />
the blues. It starts out with a rush<lb />
and never lets up. The back-up<lb />
organ, played by Dick Sims, and<lb />
the piano work shine here along<lb />
with Clapton's beautiful guitar<lb />
tour de force. The man sings with<lb />
true conviction on the form of<lb />
music he excels in like few whites<lb />
can. It brings to mind the<lb />
statement that was onoe made,<lb />
that one oould oount the great<lb />
white blues guitarists on one<lb />
hand, with two fingers missing<lb />
(Clapton, Duane Allman, Mike<lb />
Bloomfield). Clapton, the master,<lb />
shines here as he always does on<lb />
stage.<lb />
"The Clapton lets part of his<lb />
traveling road show portray her<lb />
vocal versatility on "Innocent<lb />
Times Marcy Levy gives a<lb />
strong performance on this gospel<lb />
inclined tune co-written by her<lb />
and Clapton. Clapton adds some<lb />
tasteful slide while the band fails<lb />
to lag behind on this arrange-<lb />
ment.<lb />
"Hungry" is a blockbuster of<lb />
a tune with vocal interchanc by<lb />
Clapton, Levy and Elliman. Qap-<lb />
ton again cuts loose with ,ull force<lb />
on this LevySims composition.<lb />
Its Specta sound mix adds to the<lb />
overall effect as the band rocks in<lb />
the fasion that Clapton can when<lb />
he desires to. This would be an<lb />
incredible live number with Clap-<lb />
ton soaring at the end.<lb />
Clapton fittingly ends the LP<lb />
with the moving, Black Summer<lb />
Rain Its beauty lies in the<lb />
overall arrangement and brings to<lb />
mind "Opposites" from the<lb />
THERE'S ONE IN EVERY<lb />
CROWD album. Clapton vocals<lb />
are sincere and flow into some<lb />
delicate and punctual guitar<lb />
work. Its ending seems to arrive<lb />
sooner each time it is played, a<lb />
romantic finale on his fifth aofo<lb />
LP.<lb />
There is no concept on NO<lb />
REASON TO CRY and therefcrt<lb />
remains at most, a collection of<lb />
songs. Clapton has shedded his<lb />
reggae influence on this album<lb />
for an experimentation into a<lb />
oountry style. His music interests<lb />
change as much as his appear-<lb />
ance and they always emerge on<lb />
his work. NO REASON TO CRY is<lb />
definitely no LAYLA, but there<lb />
will never be another LAYLA.<lb />
Clapton has no reason to ay here;<lb />
he has released a good album in<lb />
the midst of period of poa music<lb />

Pirates face Tar Heels<lb />
mm<lb />
AP GRID POLL'<lb />
By BILL KEYES<lb />
Assistant Sports Editor<lb />
When ECU Football coach Pat<lb />
Dye was asked about this week's<lb />
game against the Tar Heels of<lb />
UNC, he said, "This should bean<lb />
enotional game for both sides.<lb />
Last year's game has to be a very<lb />
big motivating factor as far as<lb />
Carolina is conoerned<lb />
But last year's game will be a<lb />
big motivating factor as far as<lb />
ECU is concerned as well. This<lb />
Saturday, pride and ego of two<lb />
fine football teams and student<lb />
bodies are on the line at Kenan<lb />
Stadium in Chapel Hill. This is<lb />
'The Game of the Year<lb />
Coach Dye continues, "This<lb />
years game has more at stake<lb />
than last year, I think, for both<lb />
teams. Both teams were strug-<lb />
gling when we played last year.<lb />
But at this point this year, we<lb />
both are having a fairly successful<lb />
season<lb />
While the Pirates have reeled<lb />
off six straight wins (one of them<lb />
against N.C. State who beat<lb />
Carolina 21-13 last week) and<lb />
earned for themselves national<lb />
ranking in this week's Associated<lb />
Press Top 20 poll, the Heels<lb />
have oompiled an impressive 4-0<lb />
record, winning against Florida,<lb />
Miami of Ohio, Northwestern and<lb />
Army and losing on the last two<lb />
outings to nationally-ranked Mis-<lb />
souri and arch-rival N.C. State.<lb />
But the records are forgotten this<lb />
week. All to be considered is ECU<lb />
versus UNC.<lb />
ECU assistant coach Frank<lb />
Or gel prepared the scouting<lb />
report this week. "Their defense<lb />
is stronger physically than . ny<lb />
other team on our schedule.<lb />
Sideline Chat<lb />
with Steve Wheeler<lb />
Well, sports gans, it's finally here. You can cut the electricity on<lb />
campus with a knife. Everybody, including this writer, is as excited as<lb />
they'll be all year.<lb />
It's ECU versus UNC and you can throw out the records, rankings,<lb />
and anything else that means anything. These two teams are rivals.<lb />
vSays Pirate coach Pat Dye, This should be an emotional game for<lb />
botn sides. Last year's game has to be a very big motivating factor as far<lb />
as Carolina is concerned.<lb />
"We re still growing at East Carolina. We've never been to some<lb />
places we want to go.<lb />
I really believe our football program has grown to where we can line<lb />
up against anyone and play and not be embarrassed<lb />
UNC coach Bill Dooley: "East Carolina is one of the best teams we<lb />
will play all season. Their talent is the calibre of that of Missouri and<lb />
Florida. I'm extremely impressed with Mike Weaver. He's an excellent<lb />
wishbone quarterback. Although everyone talks about their offense, the<lb />
thing you must keep in mind is that East Carolina has an excellent<lb />
defense<lb />
Almost all the psychological edges in this game are in Carolina's<lb />
oorner. ECU oomes in undefeated; the Pirates 'embarrassed' UNC last<lb />
year; and the Pirates are now tied for 20th in this week's AP footbal I pol I.<lb />
Last year, East Carolina had most of the psychological edges - the<lb />
main one being the death of Coach Stas - and the Pirates won 38-17. One<lb />
prominent Carolina fan gave the crude remark that "if you sacrifice a<lb />
loved one around the football program every Friday you'd win on<lb />
Saturday<lb />
Most people not associated with ECU called last year's win a fluke,<lb />
saying Carolina was down after dropping close games with Notre Dame<lb />
and State. They also said ECU was winning for Coach Stm and was up<lb />
trying to beat their big sister 'nstitution.<lb />
Well, this year's contest cannot, in any way, be categorized as such.<lb />
ECU comes in with a powerful machine that is now ranked in all phases<lb />
of NCAA stats and now in one of the wire polls.<lb />
Coach Dye commented on being ranked.<lb />
This ranking can be great. But only as long as you keep it in proper<lb />
perspective. We've got to get ready to play a football game. Also, the<lb />
poll thing can be a one-week deal<lb />
If you are going to the game, it would advisable to leave early. There<lb />
will be three major oollege games within 25 miles of each other all<lb />
starting at 1 30 p.m. Also, the State Fair will be going on and President<lb />
Gerald R. Ford will be there Saturday morning. A crowd of 135,000 is<lb />
expected for the State Fair, including the 40,000-plus for the<lb />
State-Clemson game. 35,000-plus is expected in Durham for Maryland<lb />
versus Duke, while UNC officials are forecasting around 50,000 for the<lb />
ECU-UNC game.<lb />
So, when the players buckle up the chin straps and start the hard<lb />
hitting on Saturday afternoon, there will be plenty of action and both<lb />
teams will be trying salvage the pride that comes with victory in a game<lb />
of this magnitude.<lb />
They've done different things<lb />
from week to week. But we expect<lb />
them to show us a five-man front,<lb />

Conference round-up<lb />
ECU, Appalachian St.<lb />
showdown inevidable<lb />
By JOHN EVANS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Recognition for Southern Con-<lb />
ference football at last.<lb />
After years of being deemed<lb />
one of the weakest major-oollege<lb />
conferences in the nation, the<lb />
Southern Conference has finally<lb />
broken into the Top Twenty -<lb />
thanks to East Carolina's Pirates.<lb />
The Pirates, despite a tough<lb />
17-3 victory over VMI last week,<lb />
leaped into the top twenty by<lb />
tying with Mississippi State for<lb />
20th place in the Associated Press<lb />
wire poll. And to look at what lies<lb />
ahead for the Pirates a higher<lb />
ranking oould be in the offing.<lb />
East Carolina takes qn 4 he most<lb />
formidable opponent of any SC<lb />
team this week when it travels to<lb />
Chapel Hill to play the North<lb />
Carolina Tar Heels, a team which<lb />
had been ranked as high asthetop<lb />
fifteen before back-to-back losses<lb />
to Missouri and North Carolina<lb />
State. A win over the 4-2 Tar<lb />
Heels oould move the ECU team<lb />
farther uo in the ratings.<lb />
"This s certainly cur biggest<lb />
game of the year so far said<lb />
ECU coach Pat Dye, "and things<lb />
will be a lot different this time<lb />
than they were last year (when<lb />
ECU upset the Tar Heels,<lb />
38-17)<lb />
And Dye tninks the fact<lb />
that the Heels have a score to<lb />
settle oould make it tougher for<lb />
the Pirates this time around.<lb />
"They have a lot to make up<lb />
for after we beat them last year<lb />
said Dye, "and this is always a<lb />
big game to begin with<lb />
For a change the Pirates have<lb />
more to lose than the Tar Heels.<lb />
Most important is their national<lb />
ranking and their 6-0 record.<lb />
Other factas to consider are the<lb />
Pirates' national rankings in<lb />
NCAA team statistics. For<lb />
example, the Pirates are fifth in<lb />
the nation in rushing offense,<lb />
second in total defense with 190.2<lb />
yards a game, sixth in rushing<lb />
defense, sixth in scoring defense<lb />
and third in punt returning. In<lb />
short, the Pirates have put<lb />
toqether one of the finest defens-<lb />
ive units in the nation and one of<lb />
the most prolific running attacks.<lb />
Against UNC both will be chal-<lb />
lenged.<lb />
"We're still growing at East<lb />
Carolina and all these things<lb />
mean a lot to us said Dye. "We<lb />
still haven't been a lot of places<lb />
we'd like to go and I believe our<lb />
program has grown to where we<lb />
can line up with anyone and play<lb />
without being embarrassed<lb />
But the rest of the conference<lb />
can't be ignored - especially<lb />
Appalachian State and William<lb />
and Mary. Despite the loss of<lb />
first-string quarterback Robbie<lb />
Price, Appalachian romped past<lb />
winless Lenoir Rhyne 45-7 last<lb />
week to stay unbeaten in the<lb />
conference, but a 14-14 tie with<lb />
Furman means the Apps' only<lb />
chance in the conference is if East<lb />
Carolina loses a game and they<lb />
win the rest of theirs.<lb />
Both are unlikely. First, the<lb />
Mountaineers still have William<lb />
and Mary and The Citadel left to<lb />
play, both teams that ECU has<lb />
already played and defeated. In<lb />
addition, the Pirates have only<lb />

one game left in the conference<lb />
before a season-ending Nov. 20<lb />
home showdown with Appala-<lb />
chian State.<lb />
If the Prates win their con-<lb />
ference game on Nov. 13 against<lb />
Furman and ASU should manage<lb />
to beat both the Indians and<lb />
Bulldogs, the Nov. 20 showdown<lb />
should be the conference title<lb />
game. Neither team, however,<lb />
can look that far ahead.<lb />
This week there will be no<lb />
conference matchups as all ten<lb />
current and future league teams<lb />
play non-oonference games. Next<lb />
week, though, Appalachian meets<lb />
The Citadel, 1-1 and 4-2, and<lb />
must face William and Mary, 1-1<lb />
and 4-2, the following week. Then<lb />
in their final game of the year the<lb />
Mountaineers will play ECU after<lb />
a week off.<lb />
We have our season ahead of<lb />
us still said ASU coach Jim<lb />
Brakefield. "We've had a suc-<lb />
cessful season so far except for<lb />
the disappoints at South Carolina<lb />
(a loss) and against Furman. But<lb />
we're 5-1-1 and that isn't bad. As<lb />
far as the conference is conoerned<lb />
we still have our toughest games<lb />
ahead of us in the coming<lb />
weeks<lb />
The quest for the conference<lb />
title won't be any easier for the<lb />
Indians or the Bulldogs, who<lb />
share the distinction of losing to<lb />
the Pirates. For either team to<lb />
have a chance at the title outright<lb />
ECU would have to lose its final<lb />
two league games and they would<lb />
have to go undefeated. Since the<lb />
two teams meet Nov. 13 in<lb />
Williamsburg that doesn't seem<lb />
likely. With Appalachian State<lb />
still on their schedule the best<lb />
they can hope for is to play the<lb />
spoiler's role.<lb />
That pretty well leaves a<lb />
two-team race between Appala-<lb />
chian State and the nationally-<lb />
ranked Pirates. Both have visions<lb />
of a post-season bowl appearance<lb />
which would be the first for the<lb />
conference since Richmond play-<lb />
ed in the Tangerine Bowl in 1971.<lb />
For now, it looks like the final<lb />
game on Nov. 20 will be the<lb />
conference championship game.<lb />

Students and Patrons<lb />
The Greenville Nightclub Association is making plans for the upcoming Homecoming<lb />
and Halloween weekend the last of this month. We have decided voluntarily that w wish to<lb />
close Sunday night in order to promote and support what we believe to be a really exciting<lb />
event being planned near Stokes-10 miles from Greenville. The First Annual Halloween<lb />
M usic Festival will start at noon on Sunday and run until midnight. Six non-stop, great bands<lb />
and a $250 first prize for the bestor-worst Halloween costume-should make for a terrific<lb />
last day of the Homecoming weekend.<lb />
The club owners have asked the City to work with them to insure a fun and safe weekend<lb />
for students, guests and residents of Greenville. It's really a matter of trust and common<lb />
sense for all of us. Just think about it and help us help you.<lb />
Saturday night we will be open until our regular hours, but we have decided to stop our<lb />
refreshment sales at midnight. The City has agreed to block off to traffic Fifth and Cotanche<lb />
Streets between Fourth Street and Reade Circle and Evans and Reade. Each club manager<lb />
and four of his employees will be outside to help you have a safe and enjoyable evening.<lb />
You'll recognize them because of the distinctive arm bands they'II be wearing. They'II expect<lb />
you to conduct yourself as ladies and gentlemen.<lb />
We are doing all this out of concern for you. It's your Homecoming and we want to show<lb />
the City, people of Greenville and ourselve that we can have a really nice weekend and a<lb />
really good time.<lb />
We're serious about it though and have given it a lot of thought. Please think about it too<lb />
and help us and yourself.<lb />

we're a wishbone team helps our<lb />

we have to go against in practice.<lb />
They've got speed, strength, and<lb />

they're an l-formation team that<lb />
