Disabled students hold<lb />
organizational meeting<lb />
By LARRY UEBERMAN<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Disabled Students Associ-<lb />
ation (DSA) held its first meeting<lb />
Wednesday night, Sept. 22.<lb />
The purpose of the organi-<lb />
zational meeting was to inform<lb />
students of the DSA.<lb />
It is not just for disabled<lb />
students; all interested students<lb />
are weloome, said Roy Pate,<lb />
temporary chairman.<lb />
The meeting was attended by<lb />
approximately 15 students of<lb />
which about half were disabled<lb />
students. Tim Sullivan, SGA<lb />
president, also attended the<lb />
meeting.<lb />
The DSA constitution was<lb />
read and problems faced by<lb />
disabled students were discuss-<lb />
ed.<lb />
The DSA's goals are to make<lb />
others aware that disabled stu-<lb />
dents have the same needs as<lb />
others, to aeate a research and<lb />
resource facility to upgrade all<lb />
members physically, socially and<lb />
psychologically, and to make DSA<lb />
services available to the univer-<lb />
sity.<lb />
A list is being completed of<lb />
architectural barriers which still<lb />
exist. One problem is that bikes<lb />
are often locked on aooess ramps<lb />
so that the wheelchair students<lb />
cannot get by.<lb />
Sullivan said the SGA will<lb />
allow the DSA to get an appro-<lb />
priation until the end of October<lb />
when the DSA's budget can be<lb />
presented.<lb />
Only two more organizational<lb />
meetings can be held before it is<lb />
recognized by the SGA.<lb />
The DSA urges all interested<lb />
students to attend the next<lb />
organization meeting Oct. 6, at<lb />
7:30, in Room 221 Mendenhall.<lb />

A group of approximately 100<lb />
people, consisting mostly of<lb />
Greenville citizens, met at J.H.<lb />
Rose High School Saturday,<lb />
September 25, as part of Town<lb />
Meeting '76.<lb />
Town Meeting '76 oonsists of<lb />
5,000 one-day community forums<lb />
attempting to encounter local<lb />
problems through a representa-<lb />
tive group of the population.<lb />
Town Meeting '76 is conduct-<lb />
ed by the Institute of Cultural<lb />
Affairs.<lb />
Saturday's meeting opened at<lb />
9 a.m. with registration, during<lb />
which refreshments were served.<lb />
This was followed by a weloome<lb />
at 9:30 by Rev. Jim Bailey,<lb />
ohairman of the Greenville town<lb />
meeting Steering Committee.<lb />
Don Francis, of Pittsburgh, Pa.<lb />
then gave a short speech noting<lb />
ways in which Town Meeting '76<lb />
had helped other communities.<lb />
The assembly then divided<lb />
into four groups to begin the<lb />
morning workshop, "The Present<lb />
Challenges The groups named<lb />
many issues oonoerning the citi-<lb />
zens of Greenville, one of which<lb />
was the lack of political response<lb />
to citizens' concerns.<lb />
The groups reassembled in<lb />
the cafeteria at 1230 p.m. for<lb />
lunch, which was provided by<lb />
local restaurants. Billy and<lb />
Sandra Stinson, a local singing<lb />
duo, entertained the assembly<lb />
during lunch.<lb />
At 1 :30 the group again<lb />
divided for the afternoon session,<lb />
"The Practical Proposals" work-<lb />
shop. Each of the groups was<lb />
presented with a specific area of<lb />
problems.<lb />
Group A received the econ-<lb />
omic challenges, group B the<lb />
political challenges, and group C<lb />
the cultural challenges. The task<lb />
of group D wastooompose a town<lb />
song, symbol, and story.<lb />
The groups onoe again as-<lb />
sembled at 3:30 to present their<lb />
proposals. Many of the proposals<lb />
conoerned the lack of citizen<lb />
participation in matters which are<lb />
pertinent to the welfare of the<lb />
town.<lb />
The meeting was concluded at<lb />
4:30 by Rev. Jim Bailey, who<lb />
summarized the day's activities.<lb />
Each participant in the event<lb />
received a bound report of the<lb />
workshops' results which was<lb />
prepared by representatives of<lb />

Sigma Nu social fraternity has<lb />
rented a vacant church at the<lb />
corner of Thirteenth and Cc-<lb />
tanche St.<lb />
 The house was a Pentecostal<lb />
Holiness Church that was vacant<lb />
for three years said David<lb />
Dulin, the fraternity's Lieutenant<lb />
Commander. "We started rent-<lb />
ing September 3, 1976.<lb />
"We found the church in early<lb />
August and made a deal with the<lb />
landlord to construct bedrooms<lb />
and bathrooms. We are painting<lb />
and cleaning up the house now<lb />
and it is not furnished said<lb />
Dulin.<lb />
"We have the option to buy<lb />
but we are not sure what we are<lb />
going to do. It's got potential to<lb />
be one of the best fraternity<lb />
houses but it needs a lot of work,<lb />
mostly painting and furnishing.<lb />
"We will have 18 members living<lb />
in the house by this weekend<lb />
said Dulin.<lb />
Sigma Nu established in the<lb />
spring of 1975 with 13 members<lb />
has now grown to 30.<lb />

Prewett.<lb />
"We sit in the lap of immense<lb />

Professors discuss debate<lb />
r<lb />
ByBRENDANORRIS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The outcome of the long<lb />
awaited Presidential debates was<lb />
discussed Friday by two ECU<lb />
professors.<lb />
According to Mrs. Janice<lb />
Faulkner, an ECU English 'pro-<lb />
fessor, "the debates were a<lb />
staged performance and the<lb />
candidates behaved like robots.<lb />
They acted like a couple of<lb />
presidential Barbie Dolls<lb />
Dr. John East, of the Political<lb />
Science Dept. agreed with<lb />
Faulkner's comments, saying he<lb />
believed the future debates will<lb />
be changed to a less rigid format.<lb />
Faulkner suggested a round<lb />
table discussion type format,<lb />
while East thought the candidates<lb />
should be sitting down with a<lb />
moderator between them.<lb />
Both professors did not think<lb />
the debates hurt either candidate<lb />
and that each had well prepared<lb />
information.<lb />
East, co-chairman fa the Fad<lb />
campaign in N.C said that the<lb />
was no real winner and the<lb />
stronger leader will not be<lb />
evident until after the next two<lb />
debates.<lb />
Faulkner, an active leader in<lb />
the Democratic party, said, "The<lb />
debates were to draw, everybody<lb />
lost<lb />
Faulkner said, "Both candi-<lb />
dates repeated themselves in<lb />
ader to get a point aaoss. Fa<lb />
example, Gerry Ford mentioned<lb />
three times that he had reduced<lb />
taxes for the lower income<lb />
families.<lb />
"Both had remarkable com-<lb />
mand of a lot of infamatioi, but<lb />
each candidate kept accusing the<lb />
other of distating the infamatioi<lb />
as the other used it said<lb />
Faulkner.<lb />
Both Faulkner and East<lb />
thought the questioning panel<lb />
was fair considering the format<lb />
they had to follow.<lb />
"The panel seemed mae in<lb />
oommand of the material than the<lb />
candidates said Faulkner.<lb />
"Ninety minutes is too long<lb />
fa a debate. They should be<lb />
shatened to 30 minutes a an<lb />
hour at the most said East.<lb />
East said that the audience<lb />
should not be shown on the<lb />
camera because concentration<lb />
should be only on the two<lb />
candidates.<lb />
On the other hand, Faulkner<lb />
said the live audience should be<lb />
shown because it would help hold<lb />
the attention of the home viewers.<lb />
Aocading to Faulkner, "If<lb />
you only saw the last 30 minutes,<lb />

Eating it to death<lb />
A study released Sundav by the International<lb />
Association of Chiefs of Police concludes that<lb />
overweight police officers who follow poor nutritional<lb />
practices and fail to get enough exercise cost<lb />
taxpayers extra money in disability benefits. These<lb />
practices, smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee<lb />
excessively often produce heart and circulatory<lb />
ailments which force many officers to retire early, the<lb />
report indicated. The results of this study are far-<lb />
reaching; they are applicable to the debate on<lb />
spiraling health care costs in this country.<lb />
America's culinary tradition, effectively promoted<lb />
by the advertising world, has become one of the fries,<lb />
a hamburger and a shake - and our changing medical<lb />
statistics are reflecting the trend. The "Forward Plan<lb />
for Health the second in a series of long-range<lb />
blueprints from the Department of Health, Education<lb />
and Welfare argues that the major killers are no<lb />
longer diseases like pneumonia, influenza and<lb />
tuberculosis that can be categorized as problems with<lb />
strictly medical solutions. Today, the prime health<lb />
concerns are heart disease, cancer and stroke which<lb />
could be prevented with proper nutritional habits.<lb />
Pumping dollars into physician-training programs will<lb />
only make the nation's health problems chronic by<lb />
keeping the poorly nourished, not necessarily<lb />
undernourished, alive. The only effective solution is<lb />
one of prevention, to create a national habit of proper<lb />
nutrition.<lb />
But in America food is not always considered for its<lb />
healthfulness, it must be FUN! At least that is what<lb />
the processed-food advertisers would have us believe.<lb />
Dr. C. Arden Miller, president of the American Public<lb />
Health Association, in a recent speech at the North<lb />
Carolina Health Convocation suggested government<lb />
control of the multimillion dollar promotion of "junk<lb />
food including ready-to-eat breakfast cereals,<lb />
sugary snack foods and fast food items sold at<lb />
roadside chain outlets. Miller said one tactic would be<lb />
to coeroe manufacturers to deposit one dollar in a trust<lb />
fund for nutritional advertising every time they spent<lb />
a dollar to advertise junk food. Although a forward-<lb />
thinking, rational approach to the health dilemma,<lb />
such a scheme would be instantly labeled "big<lb />
brotherish" or "Orwellian" by the pro junk-food<lb />
reactionaries.<lb />
But unless some positive action is taken to<lb />
reeducate those misled by the hucksters of hot dog<lb />
and soda pop diets, the costs for medical care will<lb />
continue to skyrocket as doctors spend their time<lb />
keeping alive those chronically afflicted with the<lb />
effects of nutritional self-abuse.<lb />

Constitution issue reviewed<lb />
mmm<lb />
m<lb />
m<lb />
m<lb />
wmm<lb />
During the past week the controversial SGA<lb />
Constitution has re-surfaced into quite an extensive<lb />
battle pitting the forces of the SGA versus the Student<lb />
Union. As the SGA advertises its strength in dollars<lb />
by being the second largest student government body<lb />
in the nation, it certainly is not advertising any<lb />
rational decision making abilities by trying to ratify<lb />
the proposed constitution nor by propelling the<lb />
additional controversy between the Student Union.<lb />
First, examine the Student Union controversy and<lb />
realize that the most efficient system of providing<lb />
entertainment for the ECU student body is to<lb />
incorporate a separate entertainment entity. The<lb />
cancellation of concerts is one area that the Student<lb />
Union cannot oontrol and as we see Student Union<lb />
President Barry Robinson use the legal system to the<lb />
fullest extent in settling contract disputes from the<lb />
past, we realize that the Union is simply not going to<lb />
take the cancellation problem sitting idly in<lb />
Mendenhall. The problem of cancellations does not lie<lb />
within the framework of the Student Union, but exists<lb />
in the failure of the various agents to properly handle<lb />
the oontract arrangements. This problem with the<lb />
agents is one that cannot be overcome by any one<lb />
single governing body, i.e. the SGA could probably<lb />
not do the job half as effectively as the Major<lb />
Attractions Committee is presently.<lb />
Secondly, note that the SGA is obviously trying to<lb />
take its oontrol into other areas besides the SGA, and<lb />
it is abusing its power and operational boundaries.<lb />
SGA President Tim Sullivan was probably correct<lb />
when he said in a " Letter to the Editor last week that<lb />
"Dean Rudolph Alexander has had far too great an<lb />
influence on the Union but look at the SGA and one<lb />
will notice that advisors, Dr. Jack Thornton and Dr.<lb />
Hans Indorf, have also had quite a bit of influence in<lb />
dedsion-making policies of the SGA. Sullivan should<lb />
look at the grass in his own backyard before trying to<lb />
mow down the neighbor's next door. Also note that<lb />
former Speaker of the House Ricky Price is basing his<lb />
legislature campaign on "Concerts instead of<lb />
Cancellations The power dwelling on second floor<lb />
Mendenhall is simply becoming so obvious that the<lb />
students had best beware of the entire revised<lb />
Constitution before they choose to vote on such an<lb />
important issue.<lb />
In last Thursday's "The Forum Monika<lb />
Sutherland, BUCCANEER Editor, made some crucial<lb />
observations about the proposed Constitution. Look at<lb />
Article III of the Constitution where it states that the<lb />
SGA shall have supreme student law. This article<lb />
alone documents the amount of power the SGA would<lb />
have if the Constitution were to be adopted. This one<lb />
article should call for student concern because of the<lb />
encroaching power on which the SGA could capitalize<lb />
in the future.<lb />
Secondly, note that the lack of representation<lb />
would be quite unfortunate for the Freshman Class<lb />
because they would be unrepresented for almost six<lb />
months before having a chance to run for the<lb />
Legislature. What a contradiction from two years ago<lb />
when Sullivan was a freshman legislator working<lb />
diligently to get "Operation Free Bird" and other<lb />
important legislation passed.<lb />
Thirdly, Ms. Sutherland makes a very valid point<lb />
when she mentions the correlation between the<lb />
February to February budgeting system and a<lb />
possible decline in student en.odment. If by some<lb />
chance the student enrollment was to drastically<lb />
decline, the SGA would obviously lose already<lb />
appropriated student fees. How can our system of<lb />
government propose annual budpets when they are<lb />
uncertain how much will be received the following<lb />
Fall quarter? The February to February budgeting<lb />
system simply will not work in the manner which the<lb />
authors of the Constitution have drawn up because<lb />
they will not be sure how much money is going to<lb />
oome in during the Fall and how much will be there<lb />
when the fiscal year ends.<lb />
Note, finally, one more obvious flaw in the<lb />
Constitution. During the summer legislature the only<lb />
members of the Executive Council with voting power<lb />
are the President of the SGA and the Speaker of the<lb />
House. There needs to be a third member of this<lb />
Council to offset a majority vote and to provide a third<lb />
check over the SGA during the summer months. If an<lb />
SGA President and the Speaker of the House allied<lb />
together on voting for summer appropriations, the<lb />
students oould be the financial loser from wasteful<lb />
appropriations.<lb />
Students, when you vote either Tuesday or<lb />
Wednesday take these factors into consideration and<lb />
choose fa yourselves whether you want a totally<lb />
'inchecked student government or do you want one<lb />
that is accountable to the needs of the students.<lb />

To Fountainhead:<lb />
The enlargement of Ficklen<lb />
Stadium is far too important to be<lb />
treated as it was in the last issue<lb />
of Fountainhead.<lb />
As the only student member<lb />
of the ECU Board of Trustees, it<lb />
is vitally important to me to see<lb />
how the students feel about using<lb />
Reserve Funds to help enlarge<lb />
the stadium.<lb />
Election folly<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
While scanning through the<lb />
FOUNTAINHEAD, I observed a<lb />
proposal to make the Student<lb />
Union President a position the<lb />
students oould elect. That way,<lb />
the president would be the<lb />
people's choice. Correct?<lb />
Wrong There is a lot more to it<lb />
than meets the eye. The Presi-<lb />
dent's job is so tough, that<lb />
students with experience in the<lb />
Union find it very challenging.<lb />
We, at the Student Union, don't<lb />
envy his position due to the<lb />
responsibility involved.<lb />
The appointment by the Board<lb />
of Directors is done with respect<lb />
to ability and experience. This<lb />
position can't be turned into one<lb />
which depends on popularity. If<lb />
one wishes to be the Pres. of the<lb />
Union, become involved. We<lb />
need you and your ideas. When<lb />
you gain experience, run for the<lb />
Presidency! It's open to every-<lb />
one.<lb />
As a matter of interest, the<lb />
S.G.A their constitution, wants<lb />
to appoint a Treasurer to head<lb />
finances so they get an experi-<lb />
enced man in control. Doesn't<lb />
that sound a lot like the reasoning<lb />
behind the appointment of the<lb />
Union President?<lb />
Further, isn't it rather para-<lb />
doxical that the S.G.A. would<lb />
sponsor a resolution to change the<lb />
President's selection policy while<lb />
in the midst of a controversy<lb />
between Barry Robinson, S.U.<lb />
President, and Sullivan over the<lb />
Constitution.<lb />

Flicks okay<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
Upon reading Tim Sullivan's<lb />
comments concerning the choice<lb />
and quality of free flicks I became<lb />
very distraught and upset. I<lb />
happen to enjoy the films shown<lb />
especially those on Wednesday<lb />
night at Mendenhall Student<lb />
Center and it does not matter to<lb />
me who selected the film and why<lb />
because they are all good. If Tim<lb />
Sullivan wants proof of this fact<lb />
he should try finding a seat after<lb />
8:00, when the shows regularly<lb />
begin.<lb />
In conclusion, I feel that<lb />
Sullivan should not gripe about<lb />
such matters in which he knows<lb />
virtually nothing and I'm sure<lb />
that my statements speak for a<lb />
much larger majority!<lb />
Polly Fussell<lb />
With that in mind, plus<lb />
knowing that the chances of the<lb />
Board voting on this issue this<lb />
year are great, Jim Elliott, editor<lb />
of Fountainhead, and I met with<lb />
Vice-Chancellor C. G. Moore. We<lb />
went to (1) find out if a vote in the<lb />
future on this was a possibility,<lb />
and (2) to find out what the<lb />
Reserve Fund was so he oould<lb />
inform the students of the facts<lb />
and I oould prepare a referendum<lb />
question on it.<lb />
Mr. Moore is extremely<lb />
bl tint, not always polite, but he<lb />
has never misled me or other<lb />
student leaders he deals with. He<lb />
can be counted upon to give a<lb />
direct answer. Mr. Elliott and I<lb />
grilled him for over an hour on the<lb />
Fund, how it would affect stu-<lb />
Green-handed<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
At the end of each day, we felt<lb />
it necessary to bring our plants in<lb />
from outside for fear they would<lb />
be stolen. During the break was<lb />
the only time we felt safe leaving<lb />
them out at night.<lb />
Damned if someone hasn't<lb />
stolen two diffenbachias and a<lb />
window box from the wall in front<lb />

personal property - not depart-<lb />
mental. Just another incident to<lb />
destroy our faith in people.<lb />

To Fountainhead:<lb />
We, the members of the<lb />
Women's Residence Council, feel<lb />
compelled to support the Student<lb />
Union's opposition to Article III,<lb />
Section 1 of the proposed Student<lb />
Government Association Con-<lb />
stitution. We believe this Article,<lb />
stating that the SGA shall be<lb />
supreme student lawhaving<lb />
precedence over any other stu-<lb />
dent originated chartersand re-<lb />
gulations to be contradictory<lb />
to the independence of other<lb />
campus organizations such as<lb />
ours.<lb />
We feel the SGA should not<lb />
have license over independent<lb />
organizations nor should our final<lb />
decisions be subject to SGA<lb />
approval.<lb />
If it is not the SGA's intention<lb />
to regulate all decisions of<lb />
separate organizations, it should<lb />
be so stated dearly in Article III,<lb />
Section 1 of their constitution.<lb />

dents if it was used fa the<lb />
enlargement of Ficklen, and what<lb />
other purposes it oould serve.<lb />
Several times he was asked to<lb />
clarify points-which he did.<lb />
Moore did not at any time refuse<lb />
to answer a question.<lb />
The next I knew - or saw - was<lb />
an editorial by Mr. Elliott stating<lb />
that the referendum question<lb />
should be defeated "if for no<lb />
other reason than at the present<lb />
time students are not familiar<lb />
enough with the University Re-<lb />
serve Funds and its uses<lb />
I am not yet in favor, nor am I<lb />
opposed, to the use of those funds<lb />
to make Ficklen larger, but it is<lb />
vital that the student who vote<lb />
know what they are doing - a job<lb />
that Mr. Elliott should have done.<lb />
How can you criticize something<lb />
on one hand because the students<lb />
don't know enough, when you<lb />
are the one who can and should<lb />
inform them? You can't have your<lb />
cake and eat it too.<lb />
It seems to me that as of last<lb />
Tuesday Mr. Elliott had the<lb />
necessary information from<lb />
Moore on the use of Reserve<lb />
Funds, and by failing to print up<lb />
an explanatory article he led me<lb />
to believe he would print, has<lb />
given a totally negative impres-<lb />
sion on the referendum question.<lb />
If there were unanswered ques-<lb />
tions in Mr. Elliott's mind, they<lb />
were there because he didn't ask.<lb />
The students are not served<lb />
by this deliberate censorship of<lb />
information, and I may not get the<lb />
objective response I need to vote<lb />
for this student body should this<lb />

New face at Memorial Gym<lb />
Assistant intramural director joins staff<lb />
By JOHN EVANS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
There is a new face around<lb />
Memorial Gym these days. She is<lb />
Rose Mary Adkins, the new<lb />
Assistant Intramural Director at<lb />
East Carolina University.<lb />
Ms. Adkins is a graduate of<lb />
Southeastern Louisiana Univer-<lb />
sity where she received a<lb />
bachelor's degree in Health,<lb />
Physical Education, Recreation<lb />
and Safety. She also earned a<lb />
Masters Degree from the Univer-<lb />
sity of Southern Mississippi.<lb />
Born and raised in Louisiana,<lb />
Rose Mary came to East Carolina<lb />
for several reasons.<lb />
"The job here was a good<lb />
opportunity for me to expand my<lb />
experience in the field of recre-<lb />
ation and since I love outdoor<lb />
sports it was a good, central<lb />
location tot me said Adkins.<lb />
"I had heard nothing but good<lb />
things about the school and the<lb />
town and I knew the intramural<lb />
program here was one of the best<lb />
in the southeast and one of the<lb />
fastest growing. For that reason it<lb />
has a lot of opportunities and<lb />
advantages for me<lb />
Rose Mary assisted the South-<lb />
ern Mississippi women's basket-<lb />
ball coach and worked in the<lb />
intramural department as a Grad-<lb />
uate Assistant.<lb />
While at Southeastern she<lb />
was a student director of intra-<lb />
muralsand played on the volley-<lb />
ball team. Se is also an avid lover<lb />
of softball, basketball and gym-<lb />
nastics. While at SE Louisiana<lb />
she helped with public relations<lb />
work for the U.S. Olympic<lb />
gymnastics team and travelled<lb />
with the team to exhibitions.<lb />
"I really enjoyed working with<lb />
them says Rose Mary, "but I'm<lb />
afraid I am not that good myself. I<lb />
am a little too tall (5-11) to really<lb />
be good. Most of the time my legs<lb />
get in the way<lb />
But Rose Mary's varied in-<lb />
terests and hobbies show she is<lb />
well-rounded, both recreational I y<lb />
and academically.<lb />
For recreation she likes to do<lb />
the things an outdoors woman<lb />
would. She likes to fish, swim, go<lb />
camping, play tennis and go<lb />
bicycle riding.<lb />
Her other hobbies she de-<lb />
scribes are "interests in history<lb />
Utilities commission<lb />
issues new policy<lb />
By BECKY SWART<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Greenville Utilities Com-<lb />
mission has issued a new cus-<lb />
tomer policy which can increase<lb />
customer deposit as high as $80<lb />
for electricity, water and gas<lb />
service.<lb />
The new policy affects resi-<lb />
dential, commercial and in-<lb />
dustrial customers.<lb />
In a policy forum dated Aug.<lb />
1, 1976, the policy is described<lb />
as a method designed to prevent<lb />
loss to the Commission from non-<lb />
payment of utility bills<lb />
The new policy requirements<lb />
are "based on historical revenue<lb />
oss factors affecting the Com-<lb />
mission's operations according<lb />
o the forum publication.<lb />
The Commission's only other<lb />
alternative to this required initial<lb />
deposit would be an increase in<lb />
utility rates, according to Curtis<lb />
Howell, business manager.<lb />
Prior to Aug. 1, the deposit<lb />
policy implied that after twelve<lb />
months of residential customer<lb />
utility use with "good" pay<lb />
history, the commission would<lb />
refund the initial deposit at two<lb />
percent interest.<lb />
The new policy, however,<lb />
dictates that for the same period<lb />
of "good" customer pay history,<lb />
the deposit will be refunded at<lb />
five per cent interest.<lb />
The deposit will also be<lb />
applied to negligent payments<lb />
with the balance refunded to the<lb />
customer with the five percent<lb />
interest still in tact, according to<lb />
Howell.<lb />

"I am big-hearted and gulli-<lb />
ble says Rose Mary. "I think<lb />
everyone is honest and it gets me<lb />
in trouble a lot. I enjoy meeting<lb />
people and I like to travel.<lb />
Greenville is in a good location to<lb />
do all the things I enjoy doing<lb />
Her duties in the intramural<lb />
department deal with the co-<lb />
recreational and women's intra-<lb />
mural programs, the recreational<lb />
swimming program and life-<lb />
guards. In addition she teaches<lb />
service courses in tennis and<lb />
swimming this quarter.<lb />
"I am especially interested in<lb />
improving the co-rec program<lb />
here says Rose Mary. "I like<lb />
the relaxed atmosphere of the<lb />
program in that a person has a<lb />
chance to play without an em-<lb />
phasis on winning and the intense<lb />
competitiveness of the other<lb />
programs. Enjoyment is the main<lb />
idea behind the oo-recreational<lb />
program.<lb />
"The things we can do here<lb />
are almost limitless and I look<lb />
forward to teaching as well as<lb />
learning some more about the<lb />
program<lb />
As a long-range goal Ms.<lb />
Adkins plans to get her Doctorate<lb />

'77 fall semester registration<lb />
date changed to August<lb />
ByLOUISTAYLOR<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Next Fall semester, ECU<lb />
students will register on Aug. 23<lb />
and dasses will begin on Aug. 25.<lb />
Last year, the ECU Calendar<lb />
Committee, established to submit<lb />
a semester calendar for 1977-78,<lb />
was changed for an early semester<lb />
by the ECU Faculty Senate so<lb />
final exams could be oompleted<lb />
before Christmas.<lb />
According to the Committee,<lb />
the August starting date was<lb />
necessary for the nearly 75 dass<lb />
week days before Christmas since<lb />
the ECU calendar induded about<lb />
150 dass days.<lb />
The 1975-76 Calendar Com-<lb />
mittee submitted calendars<lb />
through academic year 1980-81<lb />
for approval. The final proposal<lb />
had 1980 ECU students register-<lb />
ing on August 19 to begin dasses<lb />
on Aug. 21. According to then<lb />
Calendar Committee Chairman<lb />
Dr. Edgar W. Hooks the Commit-<lb />
tee had used Monday as a<lb />
starting base causing the date to<lb />
move around.<lb />
 In an unprecedented move,<lb />
SGA President Tim Sullivan<lb />
asked to address the April 27,<lb />
1976 Faculty Senate meeting<lb />
which considered the calendar<lb />
proposals. He informed the<lb />
Senate that the SGA had passed a<lb />
resolution the previous night<lb />
which oppose an early date.<lb />
Sullivan stressed that many stu-<lb />
dents held jobs in agriculture or<lb />
resorts which continued into late<lb />
August. He said that the local<lb />
dimate, coupled with the absence<lb />
of dormitory air conditioning,<lb />
might not be condudve to good<lb />
student performance.<lb />
Sullivan then asked that the<lb />
Senate consider the students<lb />
before voting and that they<lb />
postpone the vote to allow for<lb />
student input on the matter.<lb />
As a result of Sullivan's plea<lb />
and support from various Sen-<lb />
ators, a motion to accept the<lb />
calendars from 1978-79 to 1980-81<lb />
as information only waspassed.<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
East Carolina Playhouse Fri-<lb />
day announced open auditions for<lb />
the Shakespeare tragedy,<lb />
RICHARD II. The auditions are<lb />
scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 30<lb />
at 7:00 p.m. in the ECU Studio<lb />
Theatre.<lb />
RICHARD II is based on the<lb />
actual story of King Richard and<lb />
how he lost the English crown to<lb />
Henry IV.<lb />
In choosing the play, Edgar R.<lb />
Loessin, director of the play, cited<lb />
the many likenesses between<lb />
Richard II and ex-President<lb />
Richard M. Nixon.<lb />
. " I bel ieve Richard faces many<lb />
of the same problems that all<lb />
leaders must face added Loes-<lb />
sin.<lb />
"So many times, Richard II is<lb />
noted as being a weak king, and I<lb />
don't necessarily see him that<lb />
way. I want to do the play and<lb />
find out what his problems really<lb />
are. His complexity interests<lb />
me ooncluded Loessin.<lb />
According to Loessin, the<lb />
show includes a large cast of men<lb />
and women in major, minor and<lb />
non-speaking roles.<lb />
Scripts for RICHARD II are on<lb />
reserveat the ECU Joyner Library.<lb />
Interested persons are encour-<lb />
aged to read the play and, if<lb />
possible, prepare a speech a a<lb />
scene of approximately three<lb />
minutes. Residents from the<lb />
oommunity and university are<lb />
urged to audition.<lb />
The production is slated fa<lb />
Dec. 8-11 and 13-16<lb />
On Saturday evening, alumni<lb />
may choose between two featured<lb />
events scneduled to begin at 8<lb />

'Away With Words'good, but overrated<lb />
By JOHN EVANS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
"And God Bless The Beatles<lb />
For Being<lb />
One doesn't have to be a<lb />
Beatles fanatic to appreciate and<lb />
agree with this statement from<lb />
the presentation "The Beatles: A-<lb />
way With Wads" which played<lb />
fa two shows at Wright Aud-<lb />
itoriurn Wednesday.<lb />
But to appreciate fully the<lb />
work of Howard Ragland and<lb />
Chris Marshall we think you<lb />
would have to be a true die-hard<lb />
Beatles fan.<lb />
To begin with, let's get the<lb />
record straight. I am no Beatle<lb />
fanatic. I appreciate the four<lb />
Liverpoolians fa their contribu-<lb />
tions and innovations to the wald<lb />
of rock and roll music and I<lb />
recognize the affect that they may<lb />
have had on society in the sixties<lb />
and early seventies, but I must<lb />
apologize fa na having been<lb />
what in those days was called a<lb />
beatlemaniac"<lb />
Fa that reasoi, perhaps, I<lb />
didn't hang oi every piece of<lb />
Beatle film footage oontained in<lb />
the multimedia presentation a<lb />
swoon at every Beatle song, but<lb />
nonetneless I felt the show had its<lb />
finer points - as well as its lower<lb />
points.<lb />
True Beatle fans may rant and<lb />
rave at me when I say the show as<lb />
at times very dull and unenter-<lb />
taining, but at the same time I<lb />
must oommend Mr. Marshall and<lb />
Mr. Ragland fa their production<lb />
and direction job. Likewise, tech-<lb />
nician Dennis Debruhl and sound<lb />
directa Steve Firestone are to be<lb />
uxnmended.<lb />
These individuals did a good<lb />
job in their choice of film footage<lb />
and musical accompaniment to<lb />
the selected footage, but the<lb />
action and movement of the<lb />
 Away<lb />
was well-done showing the hustle<lb />
and bustle of the pre-Beatle era,<lb />
the Beatles era and typing them<lb />
in the musicians of the time (Elvis<lb />
et al) and finally into the Beatles,<lb />
the maturing Beatles. And just as<lb />
we think the film portion of the<lb />
production is showing society's<lb />
change along with the Beatles'<lb />
change we get the credits and the<lb />
title portion.of the film. How<lb />
with words<lb />
presentation just did not remain<lb />
consistent enough.<lb />
As so often happens when we<lb />
search fa keys to reviewing such<lb />
a production, we found ourselves<lb />
being caught off guard several<lb />
times.<lb />
The introduction of the film<lb />
annoying that was.<lb />
But those responsible fa the<lb />
presentation did divide the<lb />
themes well, even if they didn't<lb />
seem to live up to the billing<lb />
given "Away with Wads<lb />
Using "Sargeant Pepper's" to<lb />
open the maja part of the film,<lb />
the sound experience was appro-<lb />
priate. The use of "When I'm65"<lb />
to show the different changes in<lb />
the group's appearance also was<lb />
done well.<lb />
Other sound-imagery success<lb />
was achieved with the segments<lb />
put to "Fool On A Hill dealing<lb />
with Beatle rumas and if we<lb />
figured it right, partly with the<lb />
rumored death of McCartney; and<lb />
the carryover from "Nowhere<lb />
Man" to "Revolution showing<lb />
the revolutionary phase of the<lb />
wald during the Beatles fama-<lb />
tive years. The Beatles them-<lb />
selves were revolutionaries of<lb />
sat.<lb />
Fran there the peace theme<lb />
was stressed, with segments set<lb />
to "Give Me Love, Give Me<lb />
Peace "My Sweet Lad" and<lb />
 Give Peace A Chance<lb />
Other segments showed the<lb />
metamaphasis of the Beatles<lb />
individually and as a group,<lb />
spiritually and physically, and<lb />
ultimately with the segment<lb />
"HeyJude<lb />
I noted the audience reaction<lb />
to the shat-haired (by today's<lb />
standards) gentleman with<lb />
glasses who was dapping along<lb />
with the Beatles on the segment.<lb />
The aowd laughed, but the man<lb />
looked very much like the Beatles<lb />
did when they first appeared from<lb />
Great Britain. By chance this was<lb />
meant to show the change of the<lb />
times aeated and experienced by<lb />
the Beatles and young society in<lb />
the early seventies.<lb />
Finally the presentation ends<lb />
with "Let It Be" and aocompan-<lb />
ing film dips. What else could<lb />
have been used?<lb />
My reaction to the whole<lb />
experience was varied. I wasn't<lb />
overly entertained by the show<lb />
and I did feel a certain bit of<lb />
disappointment towards the final<lb />
product and the buildup it<lb />
received. But it did stop and mate<lb />
you think and make you<lb />
remember. And in the long run I<lb />
believe that was the real idea<lb />
behind the whole thing<lb />
Had the sound reprodudion in<lb />
' acoustically-perfect" Wright<lb />
Auditorium been better and had I<lb />
not had to strain to see ova the<lb />
constantly moving parade in front<lb />
of me .and strain to hear ova the<lb />
constant play-by-play of whispa-<lb />
ing voices behind me I might have<lb />
enjoyed it mae. Please if you go<lb />

MARQUEE<lb />
The Sailor Who<lb />
Fell From Grace<lb />
With the Sea<lb />
By DAVID R. BOSNICK<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
When the marquee of a movie reads Like the act of love, this movie<lb />
must be experienced from beginning to end I have my doubts as to the<lb />
depth of emotion to be depicted. (It is faintly reminiscent of "don't tell<lb />
your friends how this pictureetc"). This movie is like the act of love,<lb />
only in the sense that, when rushed and pretentious, they are both<lb />
disappointing. This is the flaw in Lewis Carlino's "The Sailor who Fell<lb />
from Grace With the Sea<lb />
The novel, by Ykio Misnima, obviously does not translate well into<lb />
English. Misnima is a Japanese poet who committee hari-kari in the late<lb />
sixties. This novel was his last complete wk, and is associated with the<lb />
note he left pinned to his door for all is as air<lb />
The director, Lewis John Carlino, never realizes that the focus of the<lb />
novel is that there is nothing honest or heroic enough to justify mere<lb />
existence. This misinterpretation of the crux of the novel causes the<lb />
movie to degenerate into a static "Lord of the Flies with occasional<lb />
soft-core porno scenes.<lb />
The movie revolves around the actions of a group of five precocious<lb />
British boys in a seaside village. Anne Osbome's (Sara Miles) son John,<lb />
(John Kahn) is a member. The focus of the group is that all of the adult<lb />
world is twisted and evil, yet such is their leader's preoccupation with it<lb />
that their meetings are adult imitations. The leader is an unrealistically<lb />
precocious cigar smoker (Earl Rhodes) who lectures the group on the<lb />
essence of life as he disects his cat to find its "core<lb />
John is the fatherless romantic of this little group and is fascinated by<lb />
the beauty and "perfect order of the sea It is the fear that Mr.<lb />
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmfmmmmmmmm<lb />
Cameron (Kris Kristoferson) has ruined that order that leads him to<lb />
believe that the chief is right, that Mr. Cameron must be saved from<lb />
himself.<lb />
John's mother is a thirty year old widow who, among the selling of<lb />
her antiques, lives in her memories of her husband. We observe, (with<lb />
John, who is agonizing through puberty), her masturbatory fantasy and<lb />
are left with the image of a lonely, thoughtful woman.<lb />
It is a major incongruity that this private woman suddenly decides to<lb />
sleep with Mr. Cameron. Their introductory dinner together is<lb />
punctuated with tired lines like;<lb />
"I've never spoken like this to anyone and "We're all searching<lb />
Mr. Cameron's dream of a grey shark, fin shining as it moves<lb />
towards the ship one night is absurd and never explained, yet it leads<lb />
Mrs. Osborne to the final (and ridiculous) "Mr. Cameron, would you<lb />
please sleep with me tonight?"<lb />
The best dramatic moments are during the erotic scene where M iles<lb />
expresses with her eyes and lips the needs of a lonely widow. Generally,<lb />
however, she is guilty of overacting, perhaps attempting to compensate<lb />
for Kristoferson who looks like a macho schnauzer, but doesn't act<lb />
nearly as well.<lb />
The movie is a flaccid interpretation of Misnima's belief that there is<lb />
nothing to believe in. It'sastarvehide with occasional erotica. I give it<lb />
a star and a 12 on the basis of Miles' occasional adequacy and an<lb />
excellent soundtrack. It is now playing through Thursday at the Plaza<lb />

Pirates squeak by Indians, 20-19<lb />
By STEVE WHEELER<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
Many times when a football<lb />
game has just been won or lost,<lb />
the coaches say it was the kicking<lb />
game that made the difference.<lb />
That was the case Saturday as<lb />
East Carolina pulled out a<lb />
squeaker over William and Mary,<lb />
20-19, on the Indians' home turf,<lb />
Cary Field.<lb />
A missed extra point by Steve<lb />
Libassi spelled the difference as<lb />
Pete Conaty kicked a field goal<lb />
with just 322 left in the contest to<lb />
give the Pirates their initial<lb />
oonferenoe victory of the season.<lb />
ECU is 3-0 overall, while the<lb />
Indians fell to 1-1 in the Southern<lb />
and 2-1 in all games.<lb />
"Our kicking game definitely<lb />
won the game for us stated<lb />
head coach Pat Dye following the<lb />
contest. "I'm tremendously<lb />
proud of our kids for their kicking<lb />
game. We had a blocked punt and<lb />
Conaty had those two field goals.<lb />
You know, he's 7-7 (on field<lb />
goals) fa the season<lb />
Even after the field goal by<lb />
Conaty, it took a big defensive<lb />
play to salter the game into the<lb />
win column. After the kickoff,<lb />
William and Mary picked up a<lb />
couple of first downs and moved<lb />
to their 45 yard line. On first<lb />
down, quarterback Tom Rozantz<lb />
went back to pass. His throw to<lb />
the left side was intercepted by<lb />
cornerback Ernest Madison to<lb />
give the Pirates the ball back with<lb />
just ever a minute left in the<lb />
game. ECU then ran the clock out<lb />
fa the win.<lb />
To get the deciding points, the<lb />
Pirates drove the ball down the<lb />
field much like they did against<lb />
State the previous week. Quarter-<lb />
back Mike Weava moved the<lb />
team up the field with authaity,<lb />
much as he did against the<lb />
Wolfpack, to pick up the winning<lb />
field goal. Starting at their 32<lb />
yard line, the Pirates took 11<lb />
plays to get in position for<lb />
Conaty's three-pointer.<lb />
The big play in the drive was<lb />
Weaver's keeper on third-and-<lb />
eight at the ECU 49. The play<lb />
netted ten yards and kept the<lb />
drive going. Finally, on fourth-<lb />
and-four at the Indian 19 Conaty<lb />
came on to hit seventh field goal<lb />
of the season and provide the<lb />
Pirates with the margin of victay.<lb />
"I've ga to be proud of our<lb />
kids fa oaning back and showing<lb />
class to win it said Dye. "But,<lb />
I've got to believe our kids were<lb />
unemotional and na very en-<lb />
thusiastic. We are not good<lb />
enough to play without emaion<lb />
and enthusiasm.<lb />
"Just maybe the best team<lb />
and best prepared team didn't<lb />
win today Dye added. "Coach<lb />
(Jim) Root did a super job, had a<lb />
good game play and his team was<lb />
ready to play today. He and his<lb />
players did not get what they<lb />
deserved today. They played hard<lb />
Bill Keyes<lb />
AH really a champ?<lb />
How can athletes who participate in team spats be scaned fa<lb />
demanding high salaries when Mohammed Ali makes millions fa what<lb />
he does? Tonight Ali fights Ken Natoi at Yankee Stadium with $6<lb />
millioi guaranteed him.<lb />
Professional spats teams rake in loads of money from their high gate<lb />
receipts, radio and TV contracts, and food and souvenir sales. Loads of<lb />
money! So, I figure, why should the owners be the ones who pocket so<lb />
much when it is the players who the fans come to the stadiums a turn ai<lb />
their TV sets to watch. Put the money in the pockets of the people who<lb />
are earning it.<lb />
Also, we must admit that when we go to a professional football game<lb />
- even if it's the Kansas City Chiefs versus the New Orleans Saints- we<lb />
are usually gonna see a good ball game. We're entatained, anyway.<lb />
Is that always true of a Mohammed Ali fight? There is so much<lb />
hoopla which psyches people into expecting a great spectacle. (Pay<lb />
Howard Cosell a million.) But if we're aitical, we realize that if Ali is in<lb />
the ring fa fifteen rounds, he might actually fight fa three a four. I can<lb />
understand why boxing people would consider the rope-a-dope good<lb />
strategy, just as I can understand why basketball coaches use the stall,<lb />
but it baes me to death. And I just don't think five minutes of real<lb />
boxing is wath the millions Ali collects. Enough said about the financial<lb />
end.<lb />
Then there is the matter of the man's offensive personality. Many of<lb />
the athletes whom I admire and respect are really outrageous characters. I<lb />
can even identify with their arroganoe, their audacity, their braggadocio.<lb />
But Ali's verbosity is too much. I find it distasteful fa him to exclaim<lb />
on national television, "I'm bigger than boxing And I feel it is<lb />
intolerable fa him to declare himself out of the reach of boxing's<lb />
governing bodies' jurisdiction.<lb />
Quite possibly, Ali will beat Ken Natoi to a pulp at Yankee Stadium<lb />
and oonvinoe you that he really is bigger than boxing. But this<lb />
prejudiced writer would be mae than happy to see it the other way<lb />
around.<lb />
and deserved to win. And I think<lb />
that quarterback they have<lb />
(Rozantz) is the best we've seen<lb />
in three years and the best<lb />
prepared<lb />
Fullback Raymond Jones had<lb />
an outstanding game fa the<lb />
Pirates. The senia rushed 22<lb />
times fa 109 yards, most coming<lb />
right up the middle with second<lb />
effat to break tackles.<lb />
Raymond Jones is one hell of<lb />
a playa praised Dye. "He<lb />
probably won the game fa us<lb />
today, along with the kicking<lb />
game<lb />
The Pirates started the game<lb />
as if they were going to run the<lb />
Indians out of their own stadium.<lb />
William and Mary took the kickoff<lb />
and started from the 20. Afta<lb />
three plays gained nahing on the<lb />
Pirate defense, punter Joe Agee<lb />
had trouble handling the pass<lb />
from osnter and got off only a 21<lb />
yard kick, giving ECU excellent<lb />
field position at the Indian 41 yard<lb />
line.<lb />
East Carolina took nine run-<lb />
ning plays to go the distance as<lb />
Jones bulled over from the one.<lb />
Conaty's point after put the<lb />
Pirates up 7-0 just six minutes<lb />
into the game.<lb />
But, William and Mary came<lb />
right back. Starting from their 17<lb />
after the kickoff, the Indians<lb />
drove down to the ECU five<lb />
befae a fourth down pass fell<lb />
incomplete.<lb />
The Pirates could do nahing<lb />
and punted to the Indians at their<lb />
48. William and Mary,took just<lb />
seven plays to scae, mixing their<lb />
running and passing game per-<lb />
fectly, with Rozantz passing to<lb />
tight end Ken Cloud fa the<lb />
touchdown from 13 yards out.<lb />
Steve Libassi added the extra<lb />
point to tie the game.<lb />
After stopping the Pirates<lb />
following the kickoff, the Indians<lb />
drove to the 50 befae the Pirates<lb />
faced them to punt. ECU put on<lb />
a tremendous rush and Zack<lb />
Valentine blocked the punt back<lb />
up the field. Defensive end Fred<lb />
Chavis, substituting fa injured<lb />
Cary Godette, fell on the fumble<lb />
at the William and Mary 11 yard<lb />
line.<lb />
In three plays, the Pirates<lb />
scaed en Jaies' one yard plunge<lb />
and East Carolina went up 14-7<lb />
after Conaty's conversion.<lb />
The Indians stayed tough as<lb />
they took the kickoff and drove 62<lb />
yards to paydirt behind the arm of<lb />
Rozantz. The touchdown came on<lb />
a 14 yard pass from Rozantz to<lb />
Ken Cloud. The ball was tipped<lb />
by ECU'S Jim Bdding befae<lb />
Cloud caught it. Libassi's extra<lb />
point attempt was wide and the<lb />
Pirates took a 14-13 lead into the<lb />
locker room at halftime.<lb />
The Pirates took the second<lb />
half kickoff, but Mike Weava<lb />
fumbled on the second play and<lb />
the Indians took ova on Rolfe<lb />
Carawan's reoovay at the ECU<lb />
34 yard line. William and Mary<lb />
picked up one first down but<lb />
faced a fourth-and-five at the<lb />
ECU 18. They then called on<lb />
HAROLD RANDOLPH led the Pirates' defense against William and<lb />
Mary with 16 tackles and 11 assists.<lb />
Libassi fa a 35 yard field goal<lb />
attempt. The little sidewinda put<lb />
the ball through the goal posts to<lb />
give the Indians their first lead at<lb />
16-14.<lb />
But, East Carolina was na to<lb />
be without the lead fa long. They<lb />
took ova afta the kickoff at their<lb />
28 and on the first play Weava<lb />
hit setback Eddie Hicks with an<lb />
aerial along the sidelines and<lb />
Hicks turned it into a 29 yard<lb />
gain. Afta picking up three mae<lb />
first downs on the running of<lb />
Jim Kruis led the Indians with<lb />
57 yards in 16 carries, while<lb />
Rozantz completed 16 of 28 fa<lb />
179 yards. His leading receiva<lb />
was split end Tom Butla, who<lb />
had eight receptions fa 95 yards.<lb />
Defensively, the Pirates were<lb />
led by Harold Randdph with 16<lb />
primary tackles, 11 assists, and<lb />
one quarterback sack. Zack<lb />
Valentine had six tackles and five<lb />
assists, while Fred Chavis had<lb />
eight tackles and three assists.<lb />

Gym. All meetings will last from 430 p.m. to 530 p.m.<lb />
The ECU Rugby and Football dubs opened their seasons this past<lb />
weekend. Results will be given when we receive them.<lb />
By JOHN EVANS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The administrative responsi-<lb />
bility fa all dub spats has been<lb />
taken over this year by the ECU<lb />
Intramural department, accord-<lb />
ing to Intramural Directa Wayne<lb />
Edwards.<lb />
Along with the administrative<lb />
responsibility fa all dub sports,<lb />
Dr. Edwards said the intramural<lb />
department will provide limited<lb />
funding fa six dub spats in<lb />
1976-77.<lb />
The six dubs to be funded will<lb />
be football, karate, rugby, weight<lb />
training, volleyball and skiing.<lb />
"These are the only dubs wve<lb />
can help to fund this year said<lb />
Edwards. "In the future we hope<lb />
to help other dubs, but fa<lb />
budgetary reasons it is impossible<lb />
fa us to fund any other sports<lb />
this year.<lb />
"We will accept new dubs<lb />
during the year, though, if they<lb />
meet the criteria. No dub we<lb />
approve this year after Sept. 1<lb />
will be funded until next year<lb />
(1977-78). The six dubs we are<lb />
funding now were chosen because<lb />
they were the only ones that had<lb />
constitutions approved by the<lb />
SGA and who submitted requests<lb />
to us to be funded<lb />
The funding of the six dub<lb />
sports is based on the need of<lb />
each dub according to the nature<lb />
of travel, activity and basic needs.<lb />
"The funding won't be ex-<lb />
tensive said Edwards. "Each<lb />
club will be responsible fa<lb />
supporting their program by<lb />
raising money through dues a<lb />
admission. We are just giving<lb />
them a little extra to help them<lb />
out. Fa instance if we were to<lb />
completely fund the dub football<lb />
program it would take $30,000<lb />
and we don't have the money<lb />
available to do that.<lb />
"We should be able to help<lb />
fund the clubs through the<lb />
student intramural fees. This<lb />
should benefit the dubs greatly<lb />
and thaefae the student body,<lb />
by allowing more dubs to be<lb />
established. It won't raise intra-<lb />
mural feea<lb />
"In addition we will be able to<lb />
schedule facilities, trainer's<lb />
coverage and assistance through<lb />
our department. We can also help<lb />
them purchase equipment be-<lb />
cause we can get it at reduced<lb />
rates<lb />
Dr. Edwards said that along<lb />
with the funding of the dubs, the<lb />
intramural department will also<lb />
administrate the dubs and ap-<lb />
prove their schedules and mem-<lb />
bership.<lb />
"Every member of the dub<lb />
must sign a waiver of risk fam in<lb />
case of injury said Edwards.<lb />
"In addition, every member has<lb />
to show evidence of a physical<lb />
examination in the last 12 months<lb />
and have a hospitalization in-<lb />
surance policy<lb />
In addition, Edwards said only<lb />
ECU students can be membas of<lb />
the dubs. A Club Sports Coundl<lb />
will preside over the administra-<lb />
tion of the dub spats.<lb />
The coundl will be made up of<lb />
each dub's President, a repre-<lb />
sentative of the SGA as appointed<lb />
by the SGA President, Rose Mary<lb />
Adkins, assistant intramural di-<lb />
reda, and Dr. Edwards.<lb />
"Thiscoundl will be in charge<lb />
of policy-making fa the dubs.<lb />
We will have mandatay meetings<lb />
every month and if the presidents<lb />
do not attend then the funds fa<lb />
the dub will be frozen said<lb />
Edwards.<lb />
The dub sponsaing by the<lb />
intramural department is a new<lb />
experiment this year and one Dr.<lb />
Edwards thinks will be fa the<lb />
best. It will help to insure more<lb />
aganization fa the dubs, as well<lb />
as better the oppatunity fa<lb />
scheduling and partidpatiai.<lb />

Women's golf outlook good<lb />
By STEVE WHEELER<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
With one returning player off<lb />
last year's team, women's golf<lb />
ooach Mac McLendon is most<lb />
encouraged of the squad's chan-<lb />
ces for the upcoming season. The<lb />
lady golfers open their season<lb />
today in the Blue Ridge Ladies<lb />
Golf Tournament in Boone.<lb />
McLendon has the right to be<lb />
happy with the team, for the<lb />
player coming back is the defend-<lb />
ing state collegiate individual<lb />
champion, Marsha Person. She<lb />
also has a supporting cast that<lb />
will be fighting hard for the state<lb />
team title.<lb />
"I am very encouraged at this<lb />
point McLendon said. "Last<lb />
year, ECU had the individual<lb />
state champ (Person), but had<lb />
just two playet 5 on the team, and<lb />
therefore, was not elgible for the<lb />
team title. We should have a good<lb />
shot at the team championship<lb />
this year, but we lack exper-<lb />
ience<lb />
Other than Person, McLendon<lb />
has Heather Jones, Jill Carney,<lb />
Lynn Copeland, Morri Chambliss,<lb />
and Dawn Williamson on the<lb />
team. None have college exper-<lb />
ience, but McLendon is high on<lb />
quite a few of them.<lb />
Jones was the runner-up in<lb />
the state high school champion-<lb />
ships last year, and was a<lb />
"pleasant surprise" to McLen-<lb />
don. A native of Raleigh, Jones<lb />
has a "solid all-around game"<lb />
and has been right with Person in<lb />
practice on the Brook Valley<lb />
layout.<lb />
"Heather will get better with<lb />
experience McLendon added.<lb />
She has a great attitude and has<lb />
the potential to be a class golfer<lb />
Another top golfer will be Jill<lb />
Carney. A freshman from Green-<lb />
ville, Carney is a "long hitter,<lb />
hits it a ton Carney is the<lb />
defending Brook Valley ladies<lb />
champion.<lb />
"Jill hits it real good off the<lb />
tee, around 225 yards or more<lb />
stated McLendon. "And she is<lb />
real good around the green, but<lb />
she tends to be a little inconsis-<lb />
tent. She is a middle 80 player<lb />
now, but with a little work she can<lb />
shoot consistently in the high<lb />
70's<lb />
Lynn Copeland is a junior<lb />
from Ahoskie, N.C. and has<lb />
shown a good hitting stroke in<lb />
practice.<lb />
"Lynn is a mid 80 shooter and<lb />
is a real competitor McLendon<lb />
stated. "She has played for five<lb />
years but has not played in<lb />
competition<lb />
Morri Chambliss is a mid 90<lb />
shooter from Aberdeen, Ohio.<lb />
She has had a little trouble<lb />
putting and with her swing play,<lb />
but she is "ooming around real<lb />
fast<lb />
Morri has real good poten-<lb />
tial McLendon said. "She has<lb />
real good determination and I'm<lb />
sure she'll oome around and help<lb />
us<lb />
Dawn Williamson, a senior<lb />
from forfolk, Va. rounds out the<lb />
team. She has been shooting in<lb />
the 80's at the Brook Valley<lb />
oourse. Although McLendon has<lb />
not seen Williamson play, he said<lb />
her score cards look real good<lb />
Williamson is also the chief<lb />
cheerleader this season.<lb />
McLendon thinks with a little<lb />
experience the team can be real<lb />
good.<lb />
"We have just two players<lb />
that have played competitively in<lb />
their lives. But the others look<lb />
real good. We have excellent<lb />
potential, but pressure is the key.<lb />
Once you have the skill, the<lb />
pressure can still beat you. After<lb />
we get some experience, I think<lb />
we'll be alright<lb />
With just six players, depth<lb />
can be a problem. Coach McLen-<lb />
don said tryouts would be held if<lb />
anyone else wanted to go out for<lb />
the team. Anyone interested in<lb />
playing should call 757-6408.<lb />
Coach McLendon would also<lb />
like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Harold<lb />
Thomas at Brook Valley Country<lb />
Club fa the use of the oourse for<lb />
practice.<lb />

ECU's soocer team journeyed<lb />
up to Norfolk, Va. last weekend to<lb />

two losses and finished fourth in<lb />
the tourney.<lb />
In the opener, the Pirates fell<lb />
to Old Diminion, 4-0. The Monar-<lb />

the first half, but ooach Curtis<lb />
Frye changed goalies in the<lb />
second half, favoring freshman<lb />
Hal Bullock over Waye Burrow.<lb />
Bullock allowed just one goal<lb />
in the second half.<lb />

ECU coach Ellen Warren was<lb />
encouraged over the play of her<lb />
squad this past week.<lb />
"Against St. Mary's we made<lb />
a strong comeback by sweeping<lb />
the doubles matches said War-<lb />

will be ready. I'm pleased with<lb />
the way the team came back and<lb />

at halftime by 3-1. Frye inserted<lb />

half and the Pirates caught up as<lb />
Bullock held the AU team score-<lb />
less. But, the overtime period,<lb />
AU was in much better condition<lb />
and scored three goals.<lb />
"I was proud of the way the<lb />
guys played this weekend Frye<lb />

Bullock, since he had never<lb />
played goalie in his life. We really<lb />
played well. We were in a<lb />
tournament with four of the better<lb />
teams in the east<lb />
The losses dropped the Pirat-<lb />

Diminion is 3-1, losing only to<lb />
strong Maryland, while Princeton<lb />

ECU-UNC<lb />
game<lb />
sellout<lb />
About 100 a so die-hard ECU students braved the rain Sunday night<lb />
to get their tickets fa the Carolina game to be held on Oct. 23, making<lb />
the game a complete sellout.<lb />
The tickets went in about two hours on Monday maning.<lb />
There has been talk at campus that Carolina gave us less tickets this<lb />
year than last. Not so. According to the Business Manager fa Athletics,<lb />
Earlene Leggett, UNC sent ECU the same amount of tickets this year as<lb />
last. "But, last year, we had to send some back. We didn't sell them all.<lb />
This year we needed mae but so did they. They've got a winner this<lb />
year too<lb />
The allocation of tickets fa the Carolina game were on the same<lb />
percentage as fa the State game. This means that the same percentage<lb />
were allowed fa students and general public as fa the State game.<lb />
There ended up being a few mae tickets than Initially expected as<lb />
Athletic Directa Bill Cain visited Chapel Hill oi Thursday and came<lb />
back with about 500 mae.<lb />
The Pirates Club had the same problem, na enough tickets.<lb />
Acoading to Gus Andrews, executive directa, the Pirates Club<lb />
aiginally received 5,000 tickets, but had to go back fa sane mae.<lb />
On the second try, they received 600 mae.<lb />
"We have sane good contributas that cannot see this game<lb />
Andrews said.<lb />
This will be band day for Carolina and there will be tempaary<lb />
seating put in fa the bands to sit in.<lb />
"This is a good thing in the reasoning that there is so much interest<lb />
in our program by students, alumni, and the general public Leggett<lb />
said. "But it's a shame fa the people who want to see it not being able<lb />
to<lb />
A paper in Richmond calls the contest "the game of the year in Nath<lb />
Carolina<lb />
There is a distinct possibility that the game will be on regional<lb />
television. That Saturday is held open by ABC fa regiaial broadcasting<lb />
and this game should be one of the top games in the South fa that day.<lb />
There is oie thing fa sure, there has never been this kind of<lb />
reaction to any spating event at ECU.<lb />

ECU's women's field hookey<lb />

excellent performances in the<lb />
UNC-G Sportsday Invitational last<lb />
Saturday in Greensboro.<lb />
The Lady Pirates lost a tough<lb />
match in the morning to the<lb />
Washington (D.C.) Club, 2-1, but<lb />
came in the afternoon to dominate<lb />
Catawba, 3-0.<lb />
Against the Club, the Pirates<lb />
faced a team which has three<lb />
former and two current members<lb />
of the U.S. National squad.<lb />
Neither team scored in the first<lb />
half as the defenses dominated.<lb />
In the second half the Club<lb />
picked up one goal on a good<lb />
play, but the Lady Pirates came<lb />
back to tie the game at 1-1. But,<lb />
the Club came back to score the<lb />
winner late in the match. Cathy<lb />
Zwigard scored the Pirates' goal.<lb />
The two teams were evenly<lb />
matched all the way. Washington<lb />
had 11 shots on goal as opposed<lb />
to nine for the Bucs, but the Lady<lb />
Pirates had the ball in their<lb />
offensive end of the field for<lb />
about two-thirds of the match.<lb />
Coach Laurie Arrants was a bit<lb />
concerned about this.<lb />
"We played a super team<lb />
game, but we did not get the best<lb />
of our breaks. We had the ball an<lb />
awful long time to score no more<lb />
than one goal. But their (Wash-<lb />
ington's) defense was super<lb />
In the afternoon oontest, the<lb />
Lady Pirates manhandled the<lb />
Catawba girls. The Pirates had 13<lb />
shots on goal to just two fa<lb />
Catawba.<lb />
Cathy Zwigard picked up two<lb />
goals for the Pirates, while Linda<lb />
Christian added another. Arrants<lb />
was pleased with Zwigard's play.<lb />
"Cathy is the kind of fresh-<lb />
man you like to see. She's very<lb />
aggressive and really plays the<lb />
rvne hard.<lb />
"The whole team played real<lb />
well Arrantsadded. "I justcan't<lb />
say enough about them<lb />
The Lady Pirates will be in<lb />
action again Saturday when they<lb />
travel to an Invitational at Duke.<lb />
They will face the Durham Club in<lb />
