          <lb />MINOTITY PUBLICATION OF EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY<lb /><lb />YOU DECIDE:<lb /><lb />By DONNA CARVANA<lb />| EDITOR<lb /><lb />Recently it has come to<lb />the attention of the Ebony<lb /><lb />Herald staff that there is a<lb /><lb />need to upgrade our paper<lb />and to produce more issues<lb />of the Ebony Herald. There<lb />are alot of ways this could<lb />be done such as hiring more<lb />english majors,which would<lb />improve the paperTs writing<lb />style, or we could ask for<lb />our current budget to be in-<lb />creased to enable us to pro-<lb />duce more papers (a task<lb />that would draw heated<lb /><lb />- emotions from other<lb /><lb />medias competing for the<lb />same funds). The general<lb />feeling that I am confronted<lb />with everyday is that you<lb />the minority students don~t<lb /><lb />really care what happens to |<lb /><lb />the Ebony Herald;I do not<lb />now or will I in the future<lb />believe this.The time has<lb />come for something to be<lb />done and I need to know if<lb /><lb />you the students are ready "<lb /><lb />to help me to do work on<lb />this . problem.<lb />The solution to our pre-<lb />sent delima is not an easy<lb />_one it requires a great deal<lb />of work and support from<lb />you the readers of the<lb />Ebony Herald.I have made<lb />a proposal to the media<lb /><lb />board (which decides all<lb /><lb />issues concerning ECU<lb />medias)to incorporate the<lb />Ebony Herald into the<lb />EAST CAROLINIAN.The<lb />effect of this action would<lb />cause the EAST CAROLI-<lb />NIAN to increase the size of<lb />their paper to include a<lb /><lb />minority section.This<lb /><lb />would mean that there<lb />would be no Ebony Herald<lb />publication but you the<lb />minority students would be<lb />given equal representation<lb />in the EAST CAROLI-<lb />NIAN.By taking this action<lb />the minority students could<lb />get more coverage and have<lb />more recent news articles<lb />because the minority sec-<lb />tion would come out each<lb />time the paper was<lb />printed.But if at any time<lb />the minority section was to<lb />be deleted from the paper<lb />the Ebony Herald would<lb />automatically be put back<lb />into circulation. The staff of<lb />this section would consist of<lb /><lb />minority students and they "<lb /><lb />would have jounalistic<lb /><lb />freedom as to the subjects<lb /><lb />to be covered.They would<lb />however be under the con-<lb />troll of the editor of the<lb />EAST CAROLINIAN,but<lb />this would not create a large<lb />problem. This is only a brief<lb />discussion of some of the<lb />aspects of the proposal to<lb />give you the students a<lb />general idea of the issue at<lb /><lb />hand.<lb /><lb />This topic is extermely<lb />contraversal,the new editor<lb />of the EAST CAROLI-<lb />NIAN is totally against the<lb />idea, he has told this<lb />member of the Ebony<lb />Herald staff that it would<lb /><lb />_ be o~segregation~~ to have a<lb /><lb />minority section in the<lb />paper.I ask you the readers<lb />of the Ebony Herald do you<lb />feel we are now being<lb /><lb />segregated by having a<lb />separate paper for<lb /><lb />minorities!<lb />However it is not the<lb />EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />editor who decides this<lb />issue, but you the minority<lb /><lb />- students. The media board<lb /><lb />has informed me that if it is<lb />the wishes of the minority<lb /><lb />students to have this section |<lb /><lb />in the EAST CAROLI-<lb /><lb />-NIAN then it shall be done,<lb /><lb />but first I must precent<lb />facts to prove the minority<lb /><lb />- students feelings.<lb /><lb />The time has come for<lb /><lb />- you, the students to voice<lb />your feelings about an issue |<lb /><lb />that deeply concerns you,<lb />please donTt let this oppor-<lb /><lb />tunity pass you by.<lb /><lb />NOVEMBER 1983<lb /><lb />WOULD YOU LIKE TO<lb />KNOW MORE ABOUT<lb />THE PROPOSAL TO PUT<lb /><lb />_ THE EBONY HERALD<lb /><lb />IN THE EAST CAROLI<lb />NIAN.: .<lb /><lb />YES: NO:<lb /><lb />HOW DO YOU FEEL<lb /><lb />ABOUT THE PROPOSAL |<lb />AT THIS. POINT®:<lb /><lb />HOW WOULD YOU<lb />VOTE 3 es<lb /><lb />NOW - 2S YES:!<lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>NOVEMBER 1983<lb /><lb />BEHIND THE MASS<lb /><lb />By Wray Bobbit<lb />Contributing Writer<lb /><lb />You are probably familar with<lb />the name ~Terry Long.TT In re-<lb />cent years, the name has been<lb />synonymous with awesome, a<lb /><lb />word that well describes the 280<lb /><lb />pound pirate offensive guard. "<lb />Long has been billed as the<lb />Strongest Football Player in<lb /><lb />AmericaTT predcicated on his first<lb />weightlighting competition ever,<lb />this summer when the Columbia,<lb />S.C. native lifted a combined<lb />totgal of 2,203 pounds to win the<lb />championship.<lb /><lb />Despite his dazzling perfor-<lb />mance LongTs love for the iron re-<lb />mains exceeded by his love for<lb /><lb />the gridiron. The three year letter-<lb /><lb />man has anchored a highly |<lb /><lb />respected offensive line this year<lb />and is an All-American as well as<lb />a candidate for the Outland<lb /><lb />Trophy, given annually to col- |<lb /><lb />legiate footballTs premier lineman.<lb />_ But in our crucible for a better<lb /><lb />understanding of Terry Long we<lb />found tht in order to see him clear-<lb />ly we had to look at the man<lb />beneath the mass. and Terrv<lb /><lb />Long generously consented to<lb /><lb />_ grant an exclusive and candid in-<lb /><lb />terview to the Ebony Herald.<lb />E.B.: Tell us who Terry Long is.<lb /><lb />T.L.: ITm an easy-going person, a<lb /><lb />very religious person and<lb /><lb />somewhat introverted.<lb /><lb />E..B.; What more would you like<lb />to see the pirate football team ac-<lb />complish this year?<lb />T.L.: I'd like for us to go to a<lb />bowl. But I think that the "<lb />two top teams at the end of the<lb /><lb />year should settle the issue.<lb /><lb />E.H.: Where would you rank the<lb /><lb />pirates nationally?<lb />T.L.: Good question. It<lb />is nice entertainment but for the<lb />~average person who wants io<lb />know what real karate is like, one<lb />needs not look any further than<lb />ECUTs Karate Club under Bill<lb />McDonald.<lb />One such student of this school<lb />is James White, who is a first<lb />degree black belt. James is the<lb />perfect example that karate is for<lb />everyone. He is only five foot<lb />seven inches tall and 142 pounds.<lb /><lb />oI started my senior year in<lb />high school because I was too<lb />short to play basketball or foot-<lb />ball. Karate was unique and dif-<lb />ferent. In fact it was tailor made<lb /><lb />for the Elizabeth City native. He<lb />found that his talent was in an in-<lb /><lb />credibly flexible body and<lb /><lb />through only three years of<lb />dedication became a black belt<lb /><lb />__ (the average time is four years). It<lb /><lb />wasn t easy at first, however. o~It<lb />wasnTt what I expected, not like<lb /><lb />the movies. The Elizabeth City .<lb /><lb />School of Karate has a shitoryu<lb />style and I got beat up a lot<lb />because I had an instructor that<lb /><lb />~ treined very hard and drove us<lb /><lb />nard. But I stayed because there<lb /><lb />_ were only two blacks there and |<lb /><lb />wanted to assert myself.TT James<lb /><lb />wa: able to relate to a group of<lb />peovle ordinarily he couldnTt<lb />because of his talent. Z<lb /><lb />oI saw myself becoming aware<lb />of myself physically, becoming<lb />unique.<lb /><lb />Karate is many things to dif-<lb />ferent people, a sport, recreation<lb />or means of protection. But to<lb />James karate is mostly an art form.<lb />oI see karate as a ballet dancer<lb />sees ballet. Jah eae eis<lb /><lb />~ alike.<lb /><lb />James enjoys the Gojushorin<lb /><lb />style that the ECU karsate club<lb />offers because it gives him more<lb />freedom and is more sports<lb /><lb />oriented, which James enjoys the _<lb /><lb />most. His former en style<lb /><lb />was more oriented toward protec-<lb />ting yourself.<lb />Karate gives the little guy an<lb /><lb />image and a chance to get involv-<lb />~ed in sports. James makes the<lb /><lb />most of it, participating in com-<lb />pétition whenever possible.<lb />~The tournaments, at different<lb /><lb />skill levels (green, white, brown, -<lb />and black), down into semi-<lb /><lb />contact (two minute matches) and<lb />kata, a dance routine where you<lb />are judgesd on form, balance,<lb /><lb />grace and technique.<lb /><lb />Black belt competition is<lb />themost intense and is on a profes-<lb />sional level. They compete for<lb />prizes and ratings in national<lb /><lb />magazines. |<lb /><lb />What makes karate different is<lb />that a technique can never be<lb />mastered (take that Bruce Lee!).<lb />James insists that ~~its who works<lb />the hardest on a given day that<lb />decides whoTs better at a techni-<lb />que THAT day.<lb /><lb />This year James won the 1983<lb />Alamance Open in Burlington,<lb /><lb />N.C., taking first place in the<lb />super lightweight division.<lb />The hightlights of competing<lb /><lb />for James is when the club goes to<lb /><lb />Atlanta's Omni. oTinet and talk-<lb /><lb />ed to Bill Wallace, Chuck Norris<lb />and all the superstars and tops in<lb /><lb />- my field. ItTs great.T<lb /><lb />Karate is for everyone. ~~I<lb />teach six year olds through people<lb /><lb />forty years old, everything from<lb /><lb />dentists to juveniles.TT However it<lb />means self control, Dicipline with<lb />a capital D and practice, practice,<lb />and more practice. James runs<lb />three times a week and practices<lb />techniques two days a week.<lb />However karate is not hard for<lb /><lb />the average person. In fact it is.<lb /><lb />FOR the average Joe on the<lb />street. Most donTt get involved<lb />with competition because itTs ex-<lb />pensive to travel and thereTs very<lb /><lb />~ little pay. Does: i<lb /><lb />your desire to succeed have any bearing on<lb />the aforementioned questions? Believe it or<lb /><lb />not, your level of success effects you daily. We<lb />ST hee cai peste (ik aeniiny 00 the dab 7<lb />ly struggles that come with obtaining a col-<lb />lege education: we all want to succeed in<lb />life.<lb /><lb />What is meant by ~~success depends<lb />upon an individual's definition of the word.<lb />A happy reality is, that your future is an<lb />outcome of what you are presently. If for<lb />any reason you are presently unhappy with<lb />your life and find that it is not a life, you<lb />have the force necessary to start your new<lb />life now. .<lb /><lb />Surprising as it may seem, to change your<lb /><lb />future you must change yourself. Its a fact "<lb /><lb />MINORITY PANHELLIC<lb /><lb />- By GAIL MONROE<lb />Feateres Editor :<lb />oItTs (Minority Panhellic Society) long<lb />overdue, stated Ken , adviser<lb /><lb />for the newly organized society and pro-<lb />gram director at ECUTs student center.<lb /><lb />oWe've been trying to get a society of this<lb /><lb />type for a long time, and it looks as though<lb />we will succeed.<lb />For the past month representatives of the<lb />black greeks at ECU have been meeting to<lb />formalize a Phanhellic Society. The basic<lb />purpose is to establish unity betwen the<lb />- black greeks. Originally the society was<lb />up by the SOULS committe.<lb />oWe will be working with Souls, pro-<lb />stated Debra Nunn, member of the Zeta Phi<lb />Beta Sorority. ooWe hope to constitute with<lb />other schools with their Panhellic Socities .<lb />ooAt our next meeting, our represen-<lb />tatives will up date us on other schools<lb /><lb />societies, basically the black colleges,<lb /><lb />responded Nunn. .<lb /><lb />the student body.<lb /><lb />oWorking as a unit, we(greeks) will take<lb />part in campus activities such as Homecom-<lb /><lb />| that the outcome of the things today turn out<lb /><lb />as they do as a result of the pre-planning and<lb />priority-setting done yesterday. =<lb />To take control of your life e.g., your<lb />social life, sex life,and academic life simply<lb />start to shape it now with a little discipline.<lb />Along with a little discipline come alot of<lb />motivation. Motivation is the key to getting<lb />you what you want,and is easily obtainable<lb />if you want it. With a little positive motiva-<lb /><lb />tion you start a process that will change the<lb /><lb />o~selfT? and will alter your mental -<lb /><lb />characteristics and thought processes.<lb />Realize that the things that come about in<lb />your life come about as a result of what you<lb />do or fail to do, and things will start to hap-<lb />pen. Get excited about you mind and the<lb />ee ee ee<lb /><lb />you have about you responsbilities as a per-<lb />son and a student; rid yourself of them.<lb />Dwarft and stunted thoughts do nothing for<lb />the conditioning process that is guaranteed to<lb /><lb />one community service project per semester.<lb />When the society becomes actively in-<lb />volved, next semester, it will consist of two<lb />representatives from each black greek.<lb />Hammond and Nunn both agree that they<lb />hope the society will have a name. They<lb /><lb />_ will decide in the future meetings.<lb /><lb />According to Hammond, this is the first<lb />formal attempt to establish the society. In<lb />~the past, not all the greeks were willing to<lb /><lb />participate. |<lb /><lb />_ oThave a positive feeling about the socie-<lb />ty, mainly the kind of people who are in-<lb /><lb />volved. The white. fraternaties<lb />make up the Interfraternal Society.
