In our desire to be<lb /><lb />peacemakers obedient to<lb />the teachings of Jesus<lb /><lb />Christ, the Executive Board<lb /><lb />issues this statement to the<lb /><lb />churches of North Carolina<lb />and to all people<lb />throughout the state.<lb /><lb />The evidence shows that<lb />the underlying cause of the<lb />conflicts in El Salvador and<lb />Guatemala is the desire of<lb /><lb />_ the people to be free of<lb /><lb />military dictatorship, to<lb />have freedom from terror<lb />for their families and<lb />enough land and food to<lb />sustain them. Because of<lb />their commitment to the<lb />poor in ElT Savador,<lb />Guatemala, and Honduras,<lb /><lb />the churches and _ their<lb /><lb />workers have also become<lb />targets of repression.<lb /><lb />United States resources<lb />should not be directed.<lb /><lb />toward the repression and<lb />killing of people in Central<lb />America. ©<lb /><lb />Union is<lb /><lb />Below is the statement prepared for<lb />North Carolina Religious Leaders. "<lb /><lb />Many Latin American<lb /><lb />_ churches and church leaders<lb /><lb />have repeatedly stated dur-<lb />ing the last decade that ex-<lb />ternal subversion is not the<lb />primary cause of the ~con-<lb /><lb />flict in their countries. The.<lb /><lb />dominant challenge is inter-<lb />nal: perennial conditions of<lb /><lb />wretched poverty and the<lb /><lb />denial of basic human<lb /><lb />_ rights. To interpret the pro-<lb /><lb />blems in Central America<lb />primarily in terms of the<lb />competition between the<lb />United States and the Soviet<lb />profoundly<lb />mistaken. The primary<lb />issues are justice and the<lb />participation of the popula-<lb />tion in shaping the society.<lb /><lb />Inspired by our faith in a<lb />God who leads people to<lb /><lb />freedom and human fulfill-.<lb />ment and by the witness of<lb /><lb />the suffering Christian<lb />community<lb /><lb />the poor in the search for<lb />justice and mercy, we seek<lb />to deepen our own<lb />understanding of the Cen-<lb />tral American crisis and to<lb />accept the opportunities for<lb />witness which it presents to<lb /><lb />us. It is our faith that leads<lb /><lb />us to examine the present<lb /><lb />policies of our government<lb />toward Central America<lb />- and to protest them. We<lb /><lb />cannot condone the crass -<lb />and consistent disregard of.<lb /><lb />internationally recognized<lb />rights nor the<lb />ruthless slaughter of tens of<lb />thousands of civilians each<lb />year.<lb /><lb />Nicaragua is-. of - special<lb />concern.         <p>Do You Know?<lb /><lb />By S.L. CHERRY<lb /><lb />Staff Writer<lb /><lb />Do you know where youTre going |<lb /><lb />to? Do you like the things that life is<lb />showing you? Where are you going<lb />to? Do you know? Does it all sound<lb />familiar to you--it should if you saw<lb />Mahogany or maybe even think<lb />about Diana Ross and her list of<lb />songs. ITm not really sure how long<lb />this song remained popular, but if<lb />you think about the words to it,<lb /><lb />youTll get a challenging message,<lb />that if taken to heart will yield an<lb /><lb />abundance of success.<lb /><lb />This theme from Mahogany, in<lb />conjunction with a few other things,<lb />should be blueprinted heavily within<lb />some of us according to the way we<lb /><lb />carry on. You probably would be |<lb /><lb />surprised to find out about a lot of<lb />attitudes on this campus and the<lb />hedonistic approaches people take.<lb />A lot of the things that we hear<lb /><lb />_everyday and even now are things<lb /><lb />that weTve already heard. Contrary<lb /><lb />to belief, on college campuses, all "<lb /><lb />~would seem to suggest that<lb />everything is or will be consistent in<lb />terms of everyday living. You may<lb />try to generalize by saying that, ~~if I<lb />can just make it out of ECU,<lb />everything will be alright, then; if I<lb />only had a job and could be in-<lb />dependent, I could be happy then.TT<lb />The fine print to the whole thing is<lb />the ending word, then. This word<lb />projects future probability and<lb />something indefinite. It may be<lb />good to think about the future and<lb />what you would like to do but how<lb />can you evolve a good future then<lb />when youTre not producing a com-<lb />fortable now to live in. You only get<lb /><lb />out of something what you put into "<lb /><lb />it. Yeah, I know youTve heard that<lb />before too, but can you afford not<lb />to take heed to reality? I donTt know<lb />all of this from experience because I<lb /><lb />havenTt gone that far down the "<lb />road, but I know it through com-.<lb /><lb />mon ability that we all have the<lb />ability to reason.<lb /><lb />Do you like the things that life is<lb /><lb />showing you? Whatever your<lb /><lb />response may be, it still can stand.<lb /><lb />some improving because you and no<lb />one else wants to be complacent in<lb />an ever changing world. However, if<lb />you do or arenTt really bettering<lb />yourself, then sit back and watch<lb />yourself become extinct. ItTs your<lb />life and you make the decisions for<lb /><lb />changing it. Sometimes weTll even<lb /><lb />take things for granted, namely our<lb />very beings- our life. When we hear<lb />about mishaps occuring elsewhere<lb />we will easily say, ~~Oh well, another<lb /><lb />freak accident of robbery,TT Big deal _<lb /><lb />huh?<lb />No, not really because when it hits<lb /><lb />home all of a sudden everybody gets.<lb /><lb />so tense. It may be poor taste to<lb />speak of it, but the incident that<lb /><lb />happened at Villiage Gren is a prime<lb /><lb />example. That explosion probably<lb />caused a lot of us to take inventory<lb />about ourselves and our lives. Some<lb /><lb />will tell you that life is the pits, but |<lb /><lb />thatTs not so either, life is precious<lb /><lb />and not to be taken lightly. Life can<lb /><lb />be more than these few years youTll<lb />spend here on earth, it can be full of<lb />unconditional love and everlasting<lb />life; John 3:16 is my witness. BOSGAR<lb />Staff Writer<lb />War is full of experience<lb />and strange happenings. No<lb />matter the nature, one in-<lb />evitable result is loss of in-<lb />nocent lives. War to many<lb />people is only like a televi-<lb />sion show; to others it is a<lb /><lb />time of suffering and<lb /><lb />bloodshed.<lb /><lb />It was a Monday morning<lb />in August 1968. The place, I<lb />cannot remember. I was<lb />walking down the street<lb /><lb />_with a bug in my hand. I<lb /><lb />had crossed the second<lb /><lb />- street just to enter the<lb /><lb />supermarket when the<lb /><lb />alarm began. People were |<lb /><lb />running helter-skelter.<lb />o~What is it?T I asked. ~~Air<lb />raid,TT someone yelled. I<lb />started running, looking up<lb />at the sky. ~~Oh!, my godTT I<lb />said as I saw a chain of<lb />bombs being released by ten<lb />jet bombers and ten jet<lb />fighters, as near as I-could<lb />count. I immediately<lb /><lb />- Jumped inside the trench in<lb /><lb />front of an old movie<lb />theatre. In three minutes<lb /><lb />the whole town was in .<lb /><lb />disarray.<lb /><lb />The supermarket roof<lb />was gone, the-whole place<lb />was in smoke. I was shiver-<lb />ing. My nerves were near<lb />the breaking point and my<lb />body was covered with<lb /><lb />sweat. I could not believe it. ©<lb /><lb />A corpse without a. head<lb />was beside me. His head<lb />had been chopped off by<lb />the bomb blasts. An hour<lb />before, I had crossed the<lb />primary school playground,<lb />but what I now saw were<lb />dead bodies of innocent<lb />children. Three alive were<lb />shouting and calling for<lb /><lb />_ mommy and daddy. Along<lb /><lb />the street people were lying<lb />dead. The Red Cross, fire<lb />service, soldiers, and the<lb />police placed the dead<lb /><lb />bodies into a van.. Many<lb /><lb />houses were burnt to ashes.<lb />Some were still on fire as I<lb />ran to my home.<lb /><lb />The war had started and<lb />there was no going back to<lb />the peace table. The able<lb /><lb />youths were conscripted in-.<lb /><lb />Memories of War<lb /><lb />to the army. I could hear<lb />them chanting as they mar-<lb />ched past. I wanted to fight<lb />and vanquish our enemy,<lb />but I was too young to join.<lb />My little heart boiled with<lb />anger and tears streamed<lb />down my face as I<lb />remembered the air raid. I<lb />knelt down and prayed to<lb />God, ~~may it not happen<lb />again.TT Little did I know <lb />that after one year of<lb />serious fighting in a<lb />neighboring town, that my<lb />town .would become the<lb />next battle ground. One<lb />night my Dad drove in from<lb />the war front. He told<lb />everyone in the family- to<lb />enter the vehicle without<lb />delay and that the enemy<lb /><lb />had entered our town. I<lb /><lb />stayed behind with him.<lb />The following morning,<lb />there was another air raid.<lb />Many homes were set<lb />ablaze by the cannons of<lb />our enemyTs jet fighters. "<lb /><lb />My father told me that:<lb />five battalions of the enemy<lb />army were inside my town.<lb />Since he was one of the war<lb />plummers, my Dad told me<lb />that none of them would<lb />escape from our soldiers.<lb />The battle began with shell-<lb />ing and bombing. After six .<lb />hours of shooting, the<lb />whole town became clear<lb /><lb />~again. People were called "<lb /><lb />from the next town to come<lb />and bury dead bodies. For<lb /><lb />_the first time in my life, I<lb /><lb />Saw corpses by the<lb />thousands. I couldnTt stand<lb />looking at the scene. My<lb />father said, ~~Be a man my<lb />son-life is full of strange<lb /><lb />happenings -and_ ex-<lb />-periences.<lb /><lb />b ath.<lb /><lb />The war<lb />lingered for. three years.<lb />People died like rats that<lb />had been poisoned. On<lb />December 20th of that year,<lb />both sides called for a cease<lb />fire. An agreement was<lb />reached for a peaceful set-<lb />tlement. The war ended<lb /><lb />with the loss of my family<lb /><lb />members: two of my uncle<lb /><lb />~and a cousin.<lb /><lb />From the experience, I<lb />know that most of the<lb />mysteries of this world were<lb />caused by war.<lb /><lb /></p>

Thousands of in-<lb />nocent people have been<lb />killed senselessly. United<lb />States military aid to the<lb />small nation is being used to<lb />help aid the Salvadoran<lb />- government troops, who<lb /><lb />are often being accused of<lb /><lb />human rights violations.<lb /><lb />The violence and death is<lb /><lb />not only isolated to El<lb />Salvador. In the other Cen-<lb />tral American countries of<lb />Guatemala, Nicaragua, and<lb />Honduras, there is also<lb />much unrest. The United<lb />States is again supporting<lb />right-wing military govern-<lb />ments in both Guatemala<lb />and Honduras. On that ~<lb /><lb />day we remember the<lb />crucifixion of Jesus Christ.<lb />It is commonly known as<lb />Good Friday. For many of<lb /><lb />us Good Friday is just.<lb /><lb />another day, nothing<lb />special. Many people donTt<lb />really take the time to<lb />reflect on the deeper mean-<lb />ing of what really happened<lb /><lb />on Good Friday almost |<lb />_ 2000 years ago.<lb /><lb />: .<lb /><lb />All Ye Who Enter Here<lb /><lb />On that day, according to<lb />reports in the Scriptures,<lb />Jesus Christ, the Son of<lb />God, was hung on a cross<lb /><lb />till death to save us from<lb /><lb />our sins.<lb />When I think of sins, I<lb /><lb />think of actions that run<lb /><lb />contrary to the dictates of<lb />God. While on earth, Christ<lb />often spoke in parables to<lb />the people.. He spent his<lb />time living simply, comfor-<lb /><lb />ting the poor, the sick and .<lb />' the outcasts<lb /><lb />of society,<lb />speaking the truth and shar-<lb />ing the Good News.<lb /><lb />Christ told his people to<lb /><lb />Pas wroyws<lb /><lb />"410 Evans St. Mall<lb />wrawasscorrersssrrerenh<lb /><lb />be peacemakers, to be<lb />generous and to treat others<lb />as they would like .io be<lb />treated themselves. He<lb />spoke often about the suf-<lb />ferings of the poor. Christ<lb />told His people to relieve<lb />their sufferings. But today,<lb />there are more poor in our<lb /><lb />- world than ever before.<lb />starvation |<lb />- Claim the lives of thousands<lb /><lb />Hunger and<lb />daily.<lb /><lb />Christ also told His peo-<lb />ple to ~~love their enemiesTT<lb />and to ~~turn the other<lb />cheek.TT But today the<lb />world is still flowing with<lb /><lb />ae aero<lb /><lb />WEW YORE<lb /><lb />Your Number 1 Discount Store<lb /><lb />in TodayTs Fashions<lb /><lb />20 Percent Discount to all<lb />ECU Students with ID<lb /><lb />=<lb />i<lb />4<lb />:<lb />:<lb />\<lb />,<lb /><lb />.<lb />N<lb />N<lb />4<lb />8<lb />N<lb />N<lb />N<lb />\<lb />N)<lb />N<lb />4<lb />N<lb />8<lb />N<lb />N<lb />N<lb />N<lb />N<lb />N<lb />A<lb />Q<lb />.<lb />N<lb /><lb />;<lb /><lb />violence. Wars are going on<lb /><lb />right now - many for<lb />religious reasons - in many<lb />places throughout the<lb />world. Perhaps the epitomy<lb />of this violence is the<lb />nuclear arms race which<lb /><lb />-could potentially destroy all<lb /><lb />of GodTs world.<lb /><lb />The suffering of the poor<lb /><lb />and the violence of war are<lb /><lb />the byproducts of a human<lb /><lb />society that has opted to<lb /><lb />_ disobey the teachings of<lb /><lb />Jesus Christ. For me, the<lb />day of ChristTs death has a<lb />dual meaning. It is the day<lb />when I remember the suf-<lb />fering He went through on<lb /><lb />- the cross, but Good Friday<lb /><lb />is also a day that reminds<lb />me of the continued suffer-<lb />ing of. Christ. Because His<lb />people have not heeded His<lb />message, Christ is still dying<lb />today. His death is repeated<lb />each time one of our sisters<lb />or brothers dies from star-<lb />vation or is killed in war.<lb />The plans for nuclear<lb />mega-death are drawn up in<lb />the Kremlin and the Pen-<lb />tagon. These buildings have<lb />been constructed as sym-<lb />bols of almost 2000 years of<lb />disregard for the message of<lb />Christ.<lb /><lb />On Good Friday, I go to<lb />the Pentagon - as an<lb />American citizen who cares<lb />about the sufferings of the<lb />poor - as a Christian who<lb />wants to follow God and as<lb />a person who wants to<lb />clearly articulate to other<lb /><lb />&amp; .<lb /><lb />children of God that this<lb /><lb />building is about death, not<lb />life and has no God pen<lb />right to exist.<lb /><lb />I stand on the steps of the<lb />Pentagon on Good Friday<lb />speaking to workers as they<lb />go inside to spend yet<lb />another day working in the<lb />o~Temple of Death.TT I tell<lb />them to turn back - go<lb /><lb />home - donTt work for<lb />- death. I hold a large banner<lb /><lb />that - reads: ~o~Abandon<lb />Hope All Ye Who Enter<lb />Here.T |<lb /><lb />My message of Peace is<lb />for everyone who works at<lb />the Pentagon, from<lb />Defense Secretary, Caspar<lb />Weinberger down to the<lb />janitors who sweep the<lb />floors. To stop the gears of<lb />death from. turning, we<lb />must have a unified effort.<lb />Since most Americans pay<lb />taxes, we too, all play a<lb />direct role in the workings<lb />of government. Every<lb />dollar that goes to the<lb />preparation of war is one<lb />less dollar that can go to<lb />help the poor of our world.<lb />Unity was the spice of the<lb />Civil Rights Movement in<lb />the 1950Ts and 60Ts. Today<lb />we need a unified effort for<lb /><lb />~peace in our world and<lb /><lb />fulfillment of the call of the<lb />~~Prince of Peace.TT<lb /><lb />Ad/<lb />SS<lb /><lb /></p>
