It was<lb />progress for blacks. And | think my<lb />election gave blacks motivation.TT<lb /><lb />She further explained that her victory<lb />showed that blacks are not at ECU only to<lb />attend classes, but also to participate in<lb />any part of the university they want to.<lb /><lb />After being crowned queen during<lb />halftime of the Homecoming football<lb />game, Barnes was not asked to sit in the<lb />ECU Chancellor's box as previous queens<lb />had been asked to do.<lb /><lb />Barnes said ECU Chancellor Leo W.<lb />Jenkins later explained to her that it was<lb />decided before the game the queen would<lb />not be asked to sit in the ChancellorT s box.<lb /><lb />Jenkins said the queens in the past<lb />were either uncomfortable in his box, or<lb />they preferred to sit with friends,<lb />according to Barnes.<lb /><lb />Ebony « Herald<lb /><lb />Circulation 2500<lb /><lb />EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY, GREENVILLE N.C./VOL. lil, NO. 3/OCTOBER 1976<lb /><lb />BasieTs Orchestra<lb />performs at ECU<lb /><lb />By JOYCE EVANS<lb />Staff Writer<lb /><lb />The Count BasieTs- Orchestra will<lb />perform at ECUTs Wright Auditorium<lb />Saturday night, Oct. 30 from 8:00 until<lb />12:00. Basie and his band<lb />played jazz with ~~that swingT across the<lb />country for decades.<lb />Seventy-two year old Basie has ac-<lb />hieved high merits in the jazz field today.<lb />His success came late, as do many Blacks.<lb />In 1974, Basie received an award for his<lb />work. New York critics, now, pay him<lb />respect; although heTs been dynamic for<lb />years.<lb /><lb />BasieTs extraordinary touch on the<lb /><lb />piano, combined with his orchestra, has<lb />created an explosive, jazzy sound--a<lb />heartbeat type of rhythm that never allows<lb />the audience to remain stationary.<lb /><lb />Modern jazz is a folk music that started<lb />with the blues. Jazz was born of the<lb />musical experience of the Black people in<lb />America. Into it went the highly complex<lb />rhythmic patterns and musical conceptions<lb />native to those sections of Africa from<lb /><lb />The best of the swing styles was clearly<lb /><lb />which the Black man came, the spirituals,<lb />blues and secular music developed in<lb />America following the social and psycho-<lb />logical experiences of minority group<lb />struggling for equality.<lb /><lb />The background was not common to<lb />whites, and critics and musicians kept the<lb />traditions of adhering to the standards of<lb />European music. They had little or no<lb />patience with African-rooted sounds and<lb />techniques which rebelled against every-<lb />thing they had been taught.<lb /><lb />Blacks had been playing jazz in and<lb />around New Oleans since the 1980's, but<lb />this revolutionary new music was not<lb />accepted until the Original Dixieland Jazz<lb />Band, a white outfit, came out of the South.<lb /><lb />Black bands such as those of Duke<lb />Ellington, Count Basie, Bennie Moten,<lb />Louis Armstrong, and anumber of others<lb />had been swinging mightily for years, but<lb />it was not until Benny Goodman based a<lb />big white band on Black style that swing<lb />became popular with white America.<lb /><lb />Soul and disco music became more<lb />acceptable to larger white audiences when<lb />hip white artists started picking up on it.<lb /><lb />In spite of all the problems, jazz grew,<lb /><lb />and became not only the music of the U.S.<lb />but of all sections of the world influenced<lb />by U.S. culture.<lb />_ Today, the Crusaders, Black Byrds,<lb />Earth, Wind and Fire, Ohio Players,<lb />Grover Washington, Ramsey Lewis,<lb />Donald Byrd, and the list gets longer; are<lb />enjoying wide acceptance from both races.<lb />And the great giants of jazz are now very<lb />famous and have contributed greatly to a<lb />music that, at one time, was cast aside by<lb />people out of sheer prejudice.<lb /><lb />Presidential elections<lb /><lb />Black majorette<lb /><lb />HOMECOMING ISSUE<lb /><lb />page 2<lb /><lb />Read<lb /><lb />~~Dr. Jenkins apologized to me, and<lb /><lb />made an effort to accommodate me,TT said<lb />Barnes. ~~He asked me to sit in his box at a<lb /><lb />later game, but | didnTt accept that.TT<lb /><lb />She also said she refused to accept<lb />JenkinsT explanation because the Home-<lb />coming Steering Committee told the<lb /><lb />contestants, o~Dr. Jenkins will ask you to<lb /><lb />sit in the ChancellorTs box.<lb />emphasized that.<lb /><lb />They<lb /><lb />oIf achange was made, why didnTt they<lb /><lb />tell the Homecoming Steering Committee?<lb /><lb />oAlso, Dr. Jenkins showed a negative<lb />attitude (during the ceremonies). <p>2 EBONY HERALD/VOL. III, NO. 3/OCTOBER 1976<lb /><lb />: Jom Eamon and John East<lb /><lb />Blacks do have a choice in Nov.<lb /><lb />By KENNETH CAMPBELL<lb />Editor-in-Chief<lb /><lb />Blacks do have a choice for President in<lb />November, according to two ECI) political<lb />science professors.<lb /><lb />The candidates may have the same<lb />objectives, a prosperous America and<lb />peace around the world, but each is<lb />proposing different ways for obtaining<lb />them.<lb /><lb />Now that the debates are over, the<lb />candidates will depend on campaigning for<lb />a further discussion of the issues (if they<lb />can be further discussed).<lb /><lb />Prepared speeches and carefully plan-<lb />ned advertisements will be the bulk of the<lb />rest of the campaign. :<lb /><lb />Although at times the campaign may<lb />appear to present a well-balanced discus-<lb />sion of the issues, in each instance the<lb />material is-designed to gain votes for the<lb />candidate sponsoring it.<lb /><lb />The issues concerning blacks in the<lb />campaign are primarily domestic ones "<lb />like unemployment, and the foreign policy<lb />issue of the South African situation.<lb /><lb />Democratic presidential nominee<lb />Jimmy Carter has made it clear he<lb />supports a comprehensive national health<lb />care program, full employment, and peace<lb />at home and throughout the world, each<lb />important to blacks.<lb /><lb />President Ford is also concerned about<lb />such domestic issues too, according to Dr.<lb />John P. East, an ECU political science<lb />professor. But Ford doesnTt want to<lb />achieve them by big government spending<lb />as Carter does, said East.<lb /><lb />East isa Republican. He was a member<lb />of the platform committee at the National<lb />Convention in August.<lb /><lb />~*Grandiose and big spending programs<lb />are not the only way to attract black<lb />voters,TT said East. o~l think that is<lb />patronizing to blacks. Republicans put<lb />greater emphasis on the private sector.<lb />Our programs are not intended to<lb />discriminate.<lb /><lb />~The election of Asa T. Spaulding (a<lb />black) as the Republican candidate for<lb />Secretary of State shows that the Repub-<lb />lican party is not prejudiced.TT<lb /><lb />Eamon says<lb />Carter not a racist<lb /><lb />Referring to CarterTs programs, Tho-<lb />mas F. Eamon, ECU professor of black<lb />politics and a Democrat, said, ~~The<lb />programs may not be a cure-all, but Nixon<lb />and Ford policies have proven themselves<lb />bankrupt in so far as problems of the cities<lb />are concerned.T<lb /><lb />Eamon also attempted to dispell any<lb />rumors that Carter was or is a racist.<lb /><lb />Some things Carter is accused of doing<lb />while in local politics, such as supporting a<lb />pay raise for white teachers while not<lb />supporting a pay rise for black teachers,<lb />may appear to be racist acts, said Eamon.<lb />But Carter did them because he wanted to<lb />Stay in politics.<lb /><lb />In most instances where Carter is<lb />accused of racist acts, only half-truths are<lb />being reported, said Eamon.<lb /><lb />~oCarter since has changed,TT said<lb />Eamon referring to CarterTs present<lb />attitude on blacks.<lb /><lb />He hired blacks on his Staff when he<lb />was governor of Georgia. Hiring blacks<lb />was not the thing to do at that time.<lb /><lb />Carter succeeded Lester Maddox, a<lb />segregationist, as governor.<lb /><lb />Carter is also making use of many<lb />blacks during his presidential campaign.<lb />They include Georgia state representative<lb />Andrew Young, Ben Brown, and Martin<lb />Luther King Sr.<lb /><lb />However, it must be noted that Carter<lb />does not have the support of all of<lb />GeorgiaTs blacks such as Georgia state<lb />representative Julian Bond.<lb /><lb />Bond, a democrat, and Carter have<lb />personality and ego clashes, according to<lb />Eamon.<lb /><lb />East said he believes Carter<lb />activist enough for Bond.<lb /><lb />Ford used few blacks as advisors or as<lb />appointees in important positions, accord-<lb />ing to Eamon. Eamon said he does not<lb />believe FordT s Secretary of Transportation,<lb />William Coleman, a black, is one of FordTs<lb />important advisors on problems of the<lb />cities.<lb /><lb />Other important blacks close to Ford, in<lb />one way or another, are Republican<lb />Senator Edward Brook of Massachusetts,<lb />and Pearl Bailey, entertainer and repre-<lb />sentative to the United Nations.<lb /><lb />FordTs approach in domestic issues is<lb />not a racist one, although it may appear to<lb />be so, according to East. Ford and the<lb />Republicans just do not believe in big<lb />government spending to create jobs as the<lb />Democrats do.<lb /><lb />oThere is such a thing as too much<lb />government,TT said East, ~~and the Repub-<lb />licans have fallen heir to wage that battle.<lb /><lb />~~Government spending does not pro-<lb />duce permanent and enduring jobs.TT<lb /><lb />Ford opposes<lb /><lb />employment bill<lb /><lb />The current unemployment rate for<lb />blacks if 12.7 percent, 7.5 percent for<lb />women, and 7.1 percent for whites. The<lb />overall national rate is 7.8 percent.<lb /><lb />The Humphrey Hawkins full employ-<lb />ment bill is a much talked about piece of<lb />legislation designed to cut the unemploy-<lb />ment rate to about three percent. _<lb /><lb />However, Ford opposes the bill.<lb /><lb />~Ford doesnTt support it,TT stated East.<lb />oIf it passes, the cost of carrying it out<lb />would be tremendous. Ford sees govern-<lb />ment spending as a last resort because it<lb />causes inflation which sets the stage for<lb />recession.T<lb /><lb />Carter supports the bill in principal,<lb />believes Eamon. But, he said, Carter<lb />probably prefers another approach. He<lb />would encourage the private sector more<lb />than the bill suggests.<lb /><lb />Getting the private sector moving is the<lb />crux of FordT s approach, according to East.<lb /><lb />~The PresidentTs emphasis is on the<lb /><lb />isnTt<lb /><lb />private sector. He wants to create a more<lb /><lb />productive and creative economy which<lb />will be helpful to both blacks and whites.<lb /><lb />o~Rather than big government financing<lb />and ~make-workT jobs which patronize<lb />blacks, Ford will provide tax incentives for<lb />business in an area where there is large<lb />unemployment. This will provide jobs for<lb />everyone.T E<lb /><lb />FordT s approach is sometimes criticized<lb />as providing tax relief for the middle class<lb />while neglecting the lower class.<lb /><lb />~~Carter will put a major emphasis on<lb />people in need, problems of the cities, and<lb />providing job opportunities,TT said Eamon.<lb />~Ford doesnTt claim he is going to do much<lb />in this area.<lb /><lb />~~Ford emphasizes tax relief for the<lb />middle income class, not programs for the<lb />needy.TT<lb /><lb />The principal problem of joblessness of<lb />black versus white is not attributable to the<lb /><lb />Ford administration, according to East<lb />The problem can be solved by getting<lb />blacks more involved in education. It can<lb />be eliminated by providing opportunities<lb />and jobs for blacks, rather than depending<lb />on ~~quick-fixTT big government spending<lb />programs of the Democrats.<lb /><lb />~oSome people have a_ paternalistic<lb />attitude about blacks,TT said East. ~oThey<lb />seem to believe blacks wonTt make it. So<lb />they say, letTs give it to them.T<lb /><lb />East said he feels jobs created: by big<lb />government spending reflects that<lb />attitude.<lb /><lb />Black unemployment can be reduced to<lb />that of whites without the Humphrey-<lb />Hawkins bill and other such legislation or<lb />government programs, said East. Blacks<lb />and all minorities benefit from enduring<lb />and satisfying jobs created by a productive<lb />economy which is a result of putting<lb />emphasis on the private sector.<lb /><lb />Republicans support<lb /><lb />black capitalism<lb /><lb />~Republicans support black capit-<lb />alism,TT according to East. ~~It puts<lb />emphasis on blacks being in the private<lb />sector as employees and employers.<lb /><lb />~oThatTs where they ought to be. ThatTs<lb />Republican philosophy.TT<lb /><lb />Eamon said if Carter has done anything<lb />wrong in the campaign, he has over-<lb />promised. Balancing the budget is an<lb />example.<lb /><lb />~| donTt think either Ford or Carter can<lb />balance the budget in the period they are<lb />talking about,TT said Eamon. ~~l think<lb />Carter can be a better manager of federal<lb />bureaucracy.T<lb /><lb />East explained that England is an<lb />example of what can happen when a<lb />government overpromises.<lb /><lb />~~England is an example of where the<lb />government has overpromised,TT said\East.<lb />~oEngland has 13.6 percent unemployment<lb />and the country is not producing.T<lb /><lb />The Ford administration doesnTt know<lb />where it is going, according to Eamon.<lb /><lb />oFord often accuses Carter of being<lb />fuzzy on the issues,TT explained Eamon.<lb />~Ford has been in office two and one-half<lb />years, and after two and one-half years, |<lb />still do not Know where he.stands on many<lb />foreign and domestic issues.TT<lb /><lb />Eamon said Ford has absolutely no<lb />program to improve ghetto conditions, and<lb />his record is poor on quality-of-life type<lb />issues.<lb /><lb />He said Ford reversed himself on<lb />American foreign policy toward Israel after<lb />Carter attacked his stance.<lb /><lb />Ford just responds. to immediate<lb />challenges. Carter will have long range<lb />plans,TT said Eamon.<lb /><lb />American foreign policy should have a<lb />Special meaning to blacks during this<lb />election because of the recent develop-<lb />ments in Angola and Rhodesia.<lb /><lb />Presently, both candidates favor<lb />majority rule in Rhodesia.<lb /><lb />However, the Nixon and Ford adminis-<lb />trations went seven and one-half years<lb />favoring white minority rule there.<lb /><lb />Did Ford change his stand to attract<lb />votes?<lb /><lb />~~Ford changes his stand because of<lb />changes in administrative thinking,TT said<lb />East. ~~lt was not a move to get votes.T<lb /><lb />lf it was a move to get votes, it<lb />backfired, said East.<lb /><lb />~~The move has alienated more voters<lb />than it has gained for Ford,TT said East.<lb /><lb />Since Carter has not been in federal<lb />office, he can only be judged in foreign<lb />policy on the basis of what he says on the<lb />issue.<lb /><lb />~* Judging from what Carter has said, he<lb />is more intersted in black majority rule in<lb />Rhodesia,T said Eamon, ~~than in the<lb />protection of the white minority regime.<lb /><lb />~*Sure he is interested in the way whites<lb />are treated after black rule.T<lb /><lb />Candidates want same<lb /><lb />in Africa Rhodesia<lb /><lb />Ford wants majority rule with the<lb />protection of minority rights according to<lb />(Secretary of State Henry) Kissinger,TT said<lb />East. ~~Kissinger seems to be the<lb />spokesman on foreign policy.<lb /><lb />~~Ideally, Ford would like to see a<lb />bi-racial rule in Africa. The importance of<lb />rights of the minority must apply in Africa<lb />as in America.TT<lb /><lb />As far as foreign policy in general,<lb />Carter would put more emphasis on the<lb />interest and sensitivity of developing<lb />nations. He canTt be but so specific now,<lb />said Eamon.<lb /><lb />Carter has allowed Andrew Young to<lb />shape his foreign policy ideas on Africa,<lb />according to Eamon.<lb /><lb />Both candidates are offering the same<lb />ends -- jobs as well as national and<lb />international peace. But each has different<lb />means for achieving the desired ends.<lb /><lb />Carter appears intent on fighting<lb />joblessness now.<lb /><lb />Ford wants to fight inflation now, thus<lb />providing jobs as inflation slows.<lb /><lb />On foreigh policy, both the candidates<lb />share the same philosophy.<lb /><lb />Letter to the editor<lb /><lb />Would you believe there are more than<lb />600 blacks at East Caroina University? Not<lb />so, if you were to judge by the number who<lb />take an active role in SOULS (Society of<lb />United Liberal Students) and other organi-<lb />zations here.<lb /><lb />Of course, | realize the main reason for<lb />the lack of participation is little or no<lb />communication among us.<lb /><lb />How can we get better communication?<lb />The problem can be solved only if you and |<lb />are willing to help ourselves.<lb /><lb />A good start would be to attend<lb />SOULS meetings which are held the second<lb />Thursday night of each month. <p>EBONY HERALD/VOL. III, NO. 3/OCTOBER 1976 3<lb /><lb />As majorette<lb />Clark serves<lb />fourth year<lb /><lb />By TIM JONES.<lb />Staff Writer<lb /><lb />Linda Clark, a senior from Chesapeake,<lb />Va., isthe first and only black majorette on<lb />the East Carolina squad. She is serving her<lb />fourth year.<lb /><lb />Since high school at Indian River High<lb />in Cheaspeake, Clark has marched on the<lb />fields and in parades as a majorette.<lb /><lb />Remembering her first year at ECU,<lb />Clark said she had not intended to audition<lb />for the squad, thinking it would only prove<lb />to be a disappointing effort accompanied<lb />by frustration.<lb /><lb />Encouragement from her band director<lb />led her to the tryouts and on to the honor of<lb />being ECUTs first black majorette.<lb /><lb />Clark said that she felt pressured when<lb />she first began as an ECU majorette, but<lb />during her years here she has learned to<lb />relax and easily concentrate on her<lb />performance.<lb /><lb />Expressing a desire for more black girls<lb />on the squad, Clark said that black girls<lb />seem uninterested in becoming a major-<lb />ette. During her four years of auditions she<lb />has seen only two other blacks try out.<lb /><lb />Being a majorette, Clark enjoys the<lb />advantages of publicity, and an opportun-<lb />ity to exemplify her years of training and<lb /><lb />Are blacks pawns of ECU?<lb /><lb />There are federal regulations which<lb />State that a certain percent of students at<lb />an institution that receives federal money<lb />should be minorities. So to keep federal<lb />money the minorities have to be catered to,<lb />right? Wrong! The regulation states that<lb />the institution should have minorities but<lb />nothing requires that they be made happy.<lb /><lb />Sometime in the history of this<lb />university, or any predominately white<lb />school, a plan was devised (of course there<lb />is no concrete proof but it is conceivable).<lb />The plan had three main points. Une, tne<lb />school wanted federal money. Two, the<lb />white school had to remain predominately<lb />white. Three, open discrimination had to<lb />be avoided. All three statements had to be<lb />made to work to the advantage of the<lb />institution. So, this was accomplished<lb />through Conditioning, Eliminating and<lb />Maintaining.<lb /><lb />Students who go to white institutions<lb />confront conditioning first. It starts in<lb />English |. The instructor asks the class to<lb />write a paper on a topic of their choosing.<lb />The black student writes a paper exemply-<lb />ing black greatness, in the form of Rev.<lb />Jessie Jackson, Charels Drew, Jackie<lb />Robinson, exc. The students receives his<lb /><lb />- paper back with a grade of D. He looks at ,<lb />~ awhite friendT s paper and sees a B plus. He<lb />reads it. Ked, white and blue is the central<lb />theme. So, the black student who is no fool<lb />writes his next paper about how beautiful<lb />the campus is and how grateful he is to be<lb />at the school. However if he is stubborn, he<lb />persists with his pro-black papers and<lb />flunks the course.<lb /><lb />This brings us to Eliminating. ItTs<lb />obvious that if you are to return to school<lb />each year a grade point average has to be<lb /><lb />LINDA CLARK, Majorette<lb /><lb />discipline of a beautiful art. Through her<lb />position on the squad Clark has come in<lb />contact with many people. She enjoys<lb />performing for an audience and hopes to<lb />become a professional performer one day.<lb /><lb />She urges black girls to audition for<lb />majorette. According to Clark being a<lb />majorette requires a lot of practicing and<lb />experience before auditioning.<lb /><lb />~~Not only is twirling a necessity,TT she<lb />said, ~~but matching showmanship, co-<lb />ordination of feet and arms, and body lines<lb />and positions are just as important.T<lb /><lb />maintained. There is only one way to get<lb />good grades. Do what the instructor wants,<lb />you to. If you donTt itTs impossible to have<lb />the grade point average necessary to<lb />return. This isthe most effective method of<lb />removing potential trouble makers (black<lb />radicals as they are called).<lb /><lb />Now that the black ~students have been<lb />conditioned and trouble makers elimi-<lb />nated, they have to be kept at a controlable<lb />number - maintaining a hypothetical:<lb />example makes it clear. Year 1976-77 400<lb />minorities are accepted. The total number<lb />of minorities now equals 600 (400 old plus<lb />200 new). Year 1977-78 400 minorities are<lb />accepted. The total now equats'600. Wait!<lb />ShouldnTt that be 600 plus 400 minus 30<lb />that graduated to equal 970? There is no<lb />regulation that states that a school has to<lb />increase the total number of black students<lb />from year to year so the school doesnTt. ItTs<lb />a known fact tht the more people you have<lb />the more you will have to list out to them..<lb /><lb />The three methods, Conditioning,<lb />Eliminating and Maintaining work for the<lb />institutions. Conditioning and eliminating<lb />keeps the white institutions white. While<lb />maintaining keeps federal money coming<lb />and makes the school appear non-<lb />discriminatory.<lb /><lb />There is a white saying, ~~You can fool<lb />some of the people some of the time, but<lb />you canTt fool all the people all the time.T<lb />It can also be stated, ~o~You can use some<lb />black people some of the time, but you<lb />canTt use all black people all the time.T<lb /><lb />A new generation is emerging!<lb /><lb />DALTON NICHOLSON, .<lb />President of SOULS<lb /><lb />EBONY HERALD ST AFF<lb /><lb />Editor-in-chief -- Kenneth Campbell<lb />Feature Editor -- Tim Jones<lb /><lb />Sports Editor -- William Davis<lb /><lb />Artist -- Barry Jones<lb /><lb />CARE worker speaks<lb /><lb />By JERRY SIMMONS<lb />Staff Writer<lb /><lb />Mass starvation, disease and death are<lb /><lb />three undeniable realities prevalent<lb /><lb />throughout the world.<lb /><lb />Al Sondej, a C.A.R.E. worker, travels<lb />around the world trying to get aid for<lb />starving and underprivileged peoples of<lb />the world.<lb /><lb />Speaking to Sociology 110 classes<lb />recently, he told of people dying from<lb />starvation and disease.<lb /><lb />He told the classes about Nuns who<lb /><lb />_have to fight off the healthy people who are<lb /><lb />hungry in order to feed the sick.<lb /><lb />Eventually the healthy people became<lb />sick, and the Nuns can no longer fight them<lb />off. <p>4<lb /><lb />EBONY HERALD/VOL. III, NO. 3/;0CTOBER 1976<lb /><lb />TERRUMGS GE ae<lb /><lb />Pirate reserves show talent too<lb /><lb />With the ECU Pirates enjoying one of<lb />their most successful seasons in recent<lb />years, the success can be attributed to<lb /><lb />many factors, one of great emphasis is the "<lb /><lb />depth of this yearTs team, which is one of<lb />the most talented in the state.<lb /><lb />For the last eight weeks youTve<lb />probably become accustomed to hearing<lb />the named Ford, Godette, Randolph,<lb />Hawkins, Hicks and the other Pirate stars.<lb /><lb />The last couple of years the Pirates<lb />have had very successful recruiting years,<lb />bringing many heralded names from the<lb /><lb />prep ranks to Greenville. In 1976 the .<lb /><lb />Pirates were fortunate enough to recruit<lb />most of the finest talent in the state, such<lb />as Mike Brewington, Leander Green, Noah<lb />Clark, Roffin McNeil, Nate Adams,<lb />Charley Carter, and others who'll wear the<lb />purple and gold for the next three years,<lb />and all stars of the future.<lb /><lb />We like for you to meet some of the Top<lb />Pirate Reserves.<lb /><lb />MITCHELL SMITH<lb /><lb />Mitchell Smith -- Big Mitch has really<lb />made himself a fine football player, while<lb />not starting he has seen alot of action this<lb />season, being first alternate at both<lb />offensive tackle positions. The 6-4, 240<lb />sophomore hails from Southern Pines,<lb />N.C. and played at Pinecrest High where<lb />he was a stand-out performer.<lb /><lb />It looks almost a sure thing that he will<lb />be a starter next year for the Pirates, for he<lb />is a tested and proven performer, and has<lb />the potential to become one of ECUTs best<lb />offensive linemen ever.<lb /><lb />SAM HARRELL<lb /><lb />Fred Chavis -- (Freddie ~~JTT) maybe the<lb />best all-around athlete on the ECU football<lb />team. The 6-0, 195 defensive end, a<lb />sophomore from Dunn, N.C., has alot of<lb />natural ability.<lb /><lb />Fred is making tremendous contri-<lb />butions to the PiratesT defense unit this<lb />season, being a starter on various<lb />occasions being the heir to Cary Godette at<lb />strong end position. His speed has proven<lb />to be one of his greatest assets, and next<lb />may become one of the premier players in<lb />the country at his position.<lb /><lb />Sam Harrell -- a sophomore from<lb />Ahoskie, N.C. has really made great<lb />progress toward becoming a great of-<lb />fensive halfback at ECU. Sam is currently<lb />listed as second team right-halfback, but<lb />has the talent and ability to be first team.<lb /><lb />He was a highly recruited athlete in<lb />high school as he led Ahoskie High to the<lb />state 3-A football championship. He<lb />possesses excellent speed and quickness<lb />and all he needs is playing time, which is<lb />hard with Hawkins and Hicks. Rest<lb /><lb />assured Sam will be ready when his time<lb />arrives to perform for the Pirates.<lb /><lb />Leander Green -- The speedster from<lb />Jacksonville, N.C. was one of the most<lb />highly recruited athletes in the state. in<lb /><lb />1975. A quarterback Lee hasnTt seen too<lb /><lb />much action this season with three<lb />veteran quarterbacks ahead of him. With<lb />the graduation of Weaver and ConatyT it<lb />looks like Lee will be in a battle with Jimmy<lb />Southerland for the No. 1 position next<lb />year. Leander maybe the quickest and<lb />fastest quarterback ever to play for ECU,<lb />and with his ability he is destined to<lb />become a great player.<lb /><lb />HAROLD FORT<lb /><lb />Harold Fort - over-shadowed by the<lb />outstanding play of his side-kick, line-<lb />backer Harold Randolph. Mr. Fort has<lb />definitely come to light. The senior from<lb />Raleigh has really played well this year,<lb />from his weak-side linebacker position.<lb /><lb />Well Harold has always been known for<lb />his hard hitting, but in several games this<lb />year heTs been doing some hard running.<lb /><lb />He has had three interceptions this season,<lb />returning one for a touchdown against<lb />Southern IIlinois, and played very well in<lb />the N.C. State and Carolina games.<lb /><lb />Carolina loss disappointing, but gamea classic<lb /><lb />Last SaturdayTs 12-10 loss to Carolina<lb />was a great disappointment to the ECU<lb />team and fans, but the game was truly a<lb />classic. It was the biggest game for the<lb />Pirates in recent years.<lb /><lb />The Pirates showed alot of class and<lb />character as they fought the battle to the<lb /><lb />RAZZ JAZZ<lb />~ RECORDS ©<lb /><lb />bitter end, only to come up a little short,<lb />but you have to admire them for they kept<lb />coming back, a sign of a great team.<lb /><lb />The defeat to the Tarheels will be<lb />mostly felt by the seniors who have made<lb /><lb />their last trip to Chapel Hill wearing the<lb /><lb />purple and gold for the Pirates.<lb /><lb />Another victory over Carolina was a<lb />tremendous goal for the team, one that<lb />wonTt be met, but they still have the<lb />Southern Conference championship at<lb />hand, with the Pirates on top with a perfect<lb />3-0 mark.<lb /><lb />He presently is second on the team in<lb />individual tackles. Harold has been<lb />freaking in anew way, and ina way no one<lb />can complain about, and thatTs just playing<lb />ee hard-nose football. So freak on Mr.<lb /><lb />ort.<lb /><lb />Pirates<lb />come home<lb /><lb />ItT Il be homecoming indeed as the ECU<lb />Pirates return home from a hard two-game<lb />road trip, and play their part in the<lb />Homecoming festivities, by hosting the<lb />Western Carolina Catamounts, who hope<lb />to repeat victory in the same form as last<lb />when the Pirates shutout the Cats 48-0.<lb /><lb />Things maybe a little different year.<lb />You bet they came to town to avenge what<lb />happened last year. WCU has a 5-3 record<lb />thus far and an upset of the mighty Pirates<lb />would be the highlight of their season.<lb /><lb />The Catamount are another one of the<lb />young and rising teams in the state. They<lb />have avery young team, and naturally this<lb />brings about the problem of inexperience.<lb /><lb />But they do have several outstanding<lb />players, with the most noted being<lb />half-back Darrell Lipford who rushed for<lb />over 700 yards a year ago. They have fine<lb />receivers in Randy Tolkson and Craig<lb />Meadows, while quarterbacks Keith<lb />Scugging or Kent Briggs have the ability to<lb />get the ball to them.<lb /><lb />Defensively, the starter linebackers are<lb />Mike Wade and Frank Wilson, and upfront<lb />tackles are Ty Smith and Bobby Mason.<lb /><lb />Overall the Catamounts are not very<lb />big, but they execute very well, with<lb />emphasis on speed, quickness and aggres-<lb />siveness,<lb /><lb />Well the Pirates will go mostly with the<lb />same lineups offensively and defensicvely,<lb />with Noah filling in for Wayne Poole as<lb />defensive tackle, and Gary Newell and<lb />Billy seeing action at split end if Terry<lb />Gallaher is not ready to play.<lb /><lb />If the game gets out of hand tike last<lb />year, Chances are you'll get to see many of<lb />the talented Pirate reserves who will be<lb />anxious to perform in from of the home<lb />folks.<lb /><lb />}SOULS membership dues are being<lb /><lb />collected daily in the Cultural Center from<lb />8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays<lb />and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on<lb />Tuesdays and Thursdays.<lb /><lb />Dues are $2 a quarter of $5 a year.<lb /><lb />6.98 LIST ALBUMS 4 99<lb /><lb />HEAD EQUIPMENT, JEWELRY, &amp; MORE<lb /><lb />COTANCHE ST.
