The duties of the<lb />Sweethearts are to work with the fraternity<lb />and to represent the fraternity in certain<lb />functions.<lb /><lb />The Kappas also sponsor a Miss Kappa<lb />Alpha Psi.<lb /><lb />The national chapter of Kappa was<lb />founded January 1911 at Indianna Univer-<lb />sity. Prominent national members of<lb />Kappa are Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Authur<lb />Ashe, Rev. She met an untimely death in<lb />June.<lb /><lb />The resolution will now be presented to<lb />the Board of Directors of the Cultural<lb />Center, according to Dalton Nicholson,<lb />SOULS President.<lb /><lb />The Board will decide what steps need<lb />to be taken.<lb /><lb />Nicholson said the idea to name the<lb />Center in memory os Mrs. Wright came<lb />about during the Summer immediately<lb />after her death.<lb /><lb />He told the students supporting the<lb />idea to wait until Fall quarter before taking<lb />any action so all black students would have<lb />a chance to consider it.<lb /><lb />Now that the resolution has been<lb />accepted by the students, the Board must<lb />act.<lb /><lb /></p>

<p>Page 4<lb /><lb />Ebony Herald<lb /><lb />SPORTS<lb /><lb />Pirates survive Indians scare<lb /><lb />By BILLY DAVIS<lb />Sports Editor<lb /><lb />The William and Mary Indians seemed<lb />well prepared for the arrival of the East<lb />Carolina Pirates to town, as the Indians<lb />provided the Pirates with the most<lb />formidable contest of the season, with the<lb />Pirates emerging as the 20-19 victors,<lb />thanks to the leg of Pete Conaty. The<lb />Pirates extended their winning streak to<lb />ten games, but had to arise at keypoints<lb />during the game to stop the IndiansT<lb />attack. Ernest Madison made the big play<lb />of the day by picking off a William and<lb />Mary quarterback Tom Rozandz pass with<lb />less than a minute to go, to preserve the<lb />victory for the Pirates. It seemed rightfully<lb />fitting for an ECU secondaryman to gain<lb />some glory, for Rozantz and his Indians<lb />had a very successful day passing the ball.<lb />But in-all fairness to the ECU secondary,<lb />they were involved in some very contro-<lb />versial calls, and William and Mary had<lb />luck riding on its side, as several times<lb />during the game Pirate defenders swatted:<lb />the ball with the Indian receiver being able<lb />to come up with the ball.<lb /><lb />The Pirates drew first blood as<lb />Raymond Jones plundged over from the<lb />one yard line, capping off a 41 yard drive<lb />on the PiratesT first possession. William<lb /><lb />and Mary tied it right back at seven all, as<lb />Rozandz hit right end Ken Cloud on a 13<lb />yard scoring play. The Pirates struck right<lb />back as big Zack Valentine, the lanky<lb />sophomore defensive end continued his<lb />outstanding play by breaking through on<lb />fourth down to block a William and Mary<lb />punt, with Fred Chavis recovering the ball<lb />on the Indian 11-yard line.<lb /><lb />Raymond Jones continued his act<lb />taking it over from the one, scoring the<lb />final ECU touchdown of the day. The<lb />Indians scored again in the second quarter<lb />making the score 14-13, missing the<lb />extra point which proved to be the crucial<lb />mishap in the game for the Indians. All the<lb />other Pirate scoring in the second half was<lb />a field goal by Pete Conaty of 35-36 yards.<lb />William and Mary also had two second half<lb />field goals.<lb /><lb />As the second half progressed the<lb />Pirate defense was sternly tested by<lb />William and Mary, and the Greenville<lb />gang met the challenge, and brought home<lb />victory number three for the Pirates.<lb /><lb />OUTSTANDING PIRATES<lb />ERNEST MADISON<lb /><lb />The senior right cornerback of the<lb />Pirates made the play of the day against<lb />William and Mary by snagging his first<lb />(Bingo) interception of the year stopping<lb /><lb />ERNEST MADISON, ECUTs ~super quickT<lb />defensive back.<lb /><lb />Continued from page 2.<lb /><lb />Advantages and disadvantages of pledging<lb />discussed by frat and sorority members<lb /><lb />~1 joined a fraternity because of the<lb />brotherhood,TT Avery proudly exclaimed.<lb />oIt teaches one how to get along with<lb />others.<lb /><lb />~~There are no disadvantages to being a<lb />member of a fraternity!T :<lb /><lb />After reiterating the typical fraternity<lb />philosophy--brotherhood and a sense of<lb />belonging--Brian Kelsey offered another<lb /><lb />not so typical explanation.<lb /><lb />~There are advantages,T stated Kelsy.<lb />~o~Eor example, there is a study which<lb />proves that members of Greek organi-<lb />zations have a better chance to graduate<lb />from college,TT revealed Kelsey.<lb /><lb />~oAlso, being in a fraternity gives me<lb />the chance to experience pledging--unique<lb />in itself--to discipline myself and to work in<lb />the community on social problems.T<lb /><lb />Kelsey also said people can loose their<lb />identity after joining a fraternity.<lb /><lb />~~Many times a fraternity member may<lb />be branded or stereotyped,TT commented<lb />Kelsey. ~~He may loose friends or he may<lb />become ~a walking Kappa Mchine,T or a<lb />walking machine of whatever Greek<lb />organization he belongs to.<lb /><lb />~~In other words, the Greek organi-<lb />zation controls his every move and<lb />thought.<lb /><lb />oA fraternity member may be thought<lb />of as a Kappa and not a Brian Kelsey, for<lb /><lb />example,TT he explained. ~~These things<lb />may be considered disadvantages to<lb />someone who is planning to become a<lb />Greek.TT<lb /><lb />Another Kappa, Nick Bullock, said he<lb />joined a fraternity because of the social<lb />aspects. In stating advantages he has<lb />incurred from being in a fraternity, Bullock<lb />said he forsees good career prospects<lb />because of the influential members of the<lb />fraternity and also because he has met<lb />some influential people while a Kappa.<lb /><lb />~You are always in close contact<lb />because brothers are everywhere,T em-<lb />phasized Bullock. Bullock is an ECU<lb />football player.<lb /><lb />Joe Durham, another Kappa, explained<lb />his reasons for joining a fraternity.<lb /><lb />~~| had ended my athletic career,TT said<lb />Durham. ~~| needed a new outlet for my<lb />energies. Also, | wanted to experience this<lb />thing called brotherhood.T<lb /><lb />Durham also admitted that peer<lb />pressure played a part in his decision.<lb /><lb />~~The advantages lie in brotherhood--<lb />the unique closeness of fraternity mem-<lb />bers.<lb /><lb />~~The disadvantage is being classed as<lb />rowdy or stereotyped.T<lb /><lb />No Omega Psi Phi members were<lb />available for comment.<lb /><lb />So, there you have it. To join and not to<lb />join. That is your decision!<lb /><lb />the William and Mary drive with less than<lb />a minute remaining in the game. Although<lb />this was ErnestTs first bingo of the year, it<lb />wasnTt by far his first big play. Madison<lb /><lb />RAYMOND JONES, ECUTs ~speedyT full-<lb />back.<lb /><lb />was responsible for breaking up the pass<lb />intended for Elijah Marshall against N.C.<lb />State, the result being an interception by<lb />Jim Bolding. Madison is a hitter and heTs<lb />really been sticking people, and heTs been<lb />playing the run and pass well. Ernest is<lb />just playing his way to achieve many<lb />post-season honors, which the senior from<lb />Norfolk, Va. deserves. Keep sticking Tem,<lb />Ernest.<lb /><lb />RAYMOND JONES<lb /><lb />The versatile Pirate fullback recorded<lb />his best game to date of the season against<lb />William and Mary. The speedy fullback<lb />from Norfolk, Va. carried the ball 22 times<lb /><lb />for 109 yards and scored two touchdowns.<lb />The last couple of games Raymond has<lb />begun to shine as the Pirates outside<lb />threats Hawkins and Hicks has been<lb />slowed down a little. Raymond has been<lb />called on to carry the load and he has<lb />responded well being the most consistent<lb />back in the first three games.<lb /><lb />Indians stain<lb /><lb />William and Mary experienced a very<lb />successful afternoon against the ECU<lb />Pirates, offensively and defensively. The<lb />Pirates won but the Indians made several<lb />dents and recorded several firsts, in the<lb />Pirates statistics for the season.<lb /><lb />The Indian defense held the Pirates to<lb />278 total yards, the least for the Bucs in<lb />three games, and their first game under<lb />300 yards total offense. The Pirates also<lb />were unable to complete a pass to a<lb />wide-receiver. The offensive unit just<lb />wasnTt as sharp as in the previous games.<lb /><lb />The defense unit again proved to be the<lb />strong point of the team, but it also had its<lb />vunerable spots as the Indians were able to<lb />amass 333 total yards, the most given up<lb />by the defense to an opponent this season.<lb />William and Mary had a very balanced<lb />attack against the Pirates, being fairly<lb />successful passing the ball.<lb /><lb />ECU pass rush was very weak<lb />throughout the game, though on several<lb />occasions the Pirates put good pressure on<lb /><lb />RozantzT. The lack of a good rush can be<lb /><lb />Hawkins and Hicks are super backs,<lb /><lb />but the man running and blocking in front<lb />of them is a Super Brother, and is a break-<lb />away threat to be reckoned with alone, by<lb />opponents. So Keep on TruckinT, Ray.<lb /><lb />HAROLD RANDOLPH<lb /><lb />Harold ~~Too SmallT? Randolph is a<lb />junior linebacker from Greenville, N.C. It<lb />is hard to say anything else about him or<lb /><lb />the nickname he has picked up since being<lb />at ECU.<lb /><lb />Harold was in on 27<lb />tackles and just hitting and getting after<lb />people as an All-Conference and possibly<lb />All-American linebacker should. Harold<lb />Randolph is in aclass of his own, his speed<lb />and quickness, and the desire to play the<lb />game makes him one of the best at his<lb /><lb />HAROLD RANDOLPH, ECU's ~hard-<lb />hittingT linebacker.<lb /><lb />position and one of the finest linebackers<lb /><lb />ever to play for ECU. So Eat Tem Up, Too<lb />Small.<lb /><lb />ZACK VALENTINE<lb /><lb />Zack Valentine, the lanky sophomore<lb />defensive end from Edendon, N.C., started<lb />for his second year and is really<lb />progressing super. He surely isa winner as<lb />Coach Pat Dye calls his starters. Zack<lb />continues his fine play as he blocked a punt<lb />and had numerous tackles and _ assists.<lb />Zack had a little extra load in the William<lb />and Mary game due to the absence of Cary<lb />Godette, but he arose to the occasion well,<lb />and made a fine effort for the Pirates.<lb /><lb />Pirates stats<lb /><lb />partially attributed to the absence of<lb />All-American defensive end candidate<lb />Cary Godette. Godette who is recovering<lb />from a knee injury against N.S. State<lb />dressed for the game, but didnTt see any<lb />action.<lb /><lb />GodetteTs absence was missed in<lb />stopping the Indian running game also, but<lb />most of all his leadership was missed. Cary<lb />is definitely the leader of the defensive<lb />gang, and ateam leader. He exemplifies to<lb />the upmost the senior leadership which<lb />coach Dye stresses for his team. Godette<lb />will be ready for The Citadel this week.<lb /><lb />The Pirates were severely tested by<lb />William and Mary, and in all honesty, the<lb />game won't be considered one of the finer<lb />performances of the year, by the coaches or<lb />players. But the fact remains we won when<lb />we played bad, which is a bright spot, and<lb />a good team has the character and class to<lb />do this. Coach DyeTs bunch showed they<lb />had a lot of both as they arose to the<lb />occasion to hand William and Mary its first<lb />defeat of the season.<lb /><lb /></p>
