Parker<lb />Director<lb /><lb />SUBJECT: 1996 Mark R. Sumner Award<lb /><lb />DATE: July 5, 1996<lb /><lb />On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Outdoor Drama, it is my<lb />pleasure to invite you to submit nominations for the 1996 Mark R. Sumner Award.<lb /><lb />The Sumner Award was established in 1990 to honor the lifetime contribution of the<lb />Institute's director emeritus and recognizes the significant contribution of an<lb />individual to a specific drama or to the outdoor historical drama movement as a<lb />whole, in areas including, but not limited to, playwriting, choreography, direction,<lb />dance, acting, design, theatre architecture, patronage, scholarship, musical<lb />composition, technology and innovation, production and administration. The<lb />Sumner Award exemplifies the highest standards of American outdoor drama and is<lb />the only national award to do so.<lb /><lb />The following individuals have received the Award:<lb /><lb />1991 Bert Ballard General Manager, The Stephen Foster Story (Bardstown, KY)<lb />1992 Raymond Raillard General Manager, ?oTEXAS? (Canyon, TX)<lb /><lb />1993. Kermit Hunter Playwright, 43 outdoor historical dramas<lb /><lb />1994 Josef Meier Founder, The Black Hills Passion Play (Spearfish, SD)<lb /><lb />1995 William W. Patton Executive Director, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Ashland, OR)<lb /><lb />The 1996 Sumner Award will be presented on Saturday evening, October 5, at the<lb />National Conference on Outdoor Drama in St. George, Utah.<lb /><lb />(over)<lb /><lb />Email: outdoor@unc.edu Home Page: http://www.unc.edu/depts/outdoor/<lb /><lb /></p>

<p>The nomination and selection process are administered by the Board of Directors of<lb />the Institute of Outdoor Drama, which is a nine-member body at the University of<lb />North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Board will reach a decision early in September<lb />at which time all nominators will be notified regarding their nominations. In the<lb />past it has usually been possible to present the award at the National Conference<lb />without notifying the recipients beforehand because they were expected to attend the<lb />conference in any event. Only the nominator was aware of the impending<lb />presentation. If circumstances permit for 1996, we will operate in a similar manner,<lb />however, if the individual selected to receive the award is not expected to attend the<lb />conference as a matter of course, we will, with the cooperation of the nominator,<lb />notify the recipient in early September in the hopes that he or she will be able to<lb />make plans to attend the conference in St. George, Utah. Unfortunately, the<lb />Institute does not have funds available to support the travel of the recipient to the<lb />conference.<lb /><lb />More than one nomination may be submitted by an individual or organization.<lb />Each nomination must be accompanied by a separate nomination form, a copy of<lb />which is attached, and may be reproduced as necessary. All nomination forms must<lb />be typed to facilitate reading and duplication.<lb /><lb />The Institute encourages the submission of support materials for each nominee,<lb />which may include letters of recommendation, copies of newspaper clippings,<lb />video/audio tapes, and other information which will be helpful to the IOD Board.<lb />Not all members of the Institute?Ts Board may be acquainted with the<lb />accomplishments of the nominees, and so complete documentation of each<lb />nomination is encouraged.<lb /><lb />Nominations must be postmarked no later than Monday, August 12, 1996.<lb /><lb />NOTE: Those interested in nominating someone who has been<lb />previously nominated are encouraged to do so. Submission of<lb />the 1996 nomination form and support material may not be<lb />necessary. Please contact the Institute for advice.<lb /><lb />Nominations should be sent to:<lb /><lb />The Institute of Outdoor Drama<lb />Sumner Award Nominations<lb />The University of North Carolina<lb />CB# 3240, NationsBank Plaza<lb />Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3240<lb /><lb />This is an opportunity to recognize and to pay national tribute to those who have<lb />excelled in and supported outdoor drama. We look forward to hearing from you.<lb /><lb /></p>
