<p>HISTORY OF<lb /><lb />BARDSTOWN<lb /><lb />The Bardstown area, originally called Salem, was explored<lb />in the mid 1770s. In 1780, William Bard paid a visit to the area<lb />acting as agent for his brother David and John C. Owings. In<lb />1785, he ?olaid off?T Bardstown from an original land grant of<lb />1000 acres issued by the Virginia General Assembly. That<lb />same year, the first courthouse was built, made out of hewn<lb />logs. The town, originally called Baird?Ts Town (a variation of<lb />the family name), was designated Bardstown when<lb />incorporated in 1788.<lb /><lb />Bardstown, with a population of 7,300, is the county seat of<lb />Nelson County, named in honor of one-time governor of<lb />Virginia, Thomas Nelson. Nelson was the fourth county<lb />erected in the district (now state) of Kentucky.<lb /><lb />Bardstown is Kentucky?Ts second oldest city and plays host<lb />to many historic and popular attractions, including My Old<lb />Kentucky Home State Park. Following a visit to the mansion<lb />known as Federal Hill, the great composer Stephen Foster<lb />wrote the popular ballad, ?oMy Old Kentucky Home,? which is<lb />also Kentucky?Ts state song. ?oThe Stephen Foster Story? pays a<lb />musical tribute to Foster in an outdoor drama that includes<lb />more than 50 of his songs.<lb /><lb />Also known as the ?oBourbon Capital of the World,? the area<lb />in and around Bardstown once reflected 22 operating<lb />distilleries with distilling records dating back to 1776. Only<lb />four remain open, and three of these - Jim Beam, Heaven Hill<lb />and Maker?Ts Mark - offer tours and/or films of the distilling<lb />process.<lb /><lb />You can also get the feel for the importance that religion<lb />and education have played in Bardstown?Ts history by visiting<lb />Spalding Hall, a building of the old St. Joseph College and the<lb />adjacent St. Joseph Proto Cathedral, the first Catholic<lb />Cathedral west of the Allegheny Mountains.<lb /><lb />Attractions. Events. History. Bardstown is your open door<lb />to Kentucky's past.<lb /><lb /></p>
