        <p>THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA<lb />AT<lb />CHAPEL HILL<lb /><lb />Institute of Outdoor Drama The University of North Carolina at Chapel! Hill<lb />CB# 3240, NCNB Plaza<lb /><lb />May 29, 1991 Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-3240<lb /><lb />(919) 962-1328<lb /><lb />Mr. Ray Raillard, Executive Vice President<lb />Texas Musical Drama<lb /><lb />Box 268<lb /><lb />Canyon, TX 79015<lb /><lb />Dear Ray:<lb />This note is also intended for Margaret and Patty:<lb /><lb />For the last several years, the Paul Green Foundation has been undergoing<lb />review by its board of trustees. As the Vice President, I've been chairing<lb /><lb />a committee looking at areas the Foundation should support. We're looking<lb /><lb />at human rights groups, civil rights causes and of course, outdoor historical<lb />drama.<lb /><lb />Today, several hours after Margaret and I talked about economic impact and<lb />marketing, my committee had its third meeting, and Texas was one of the<lb />major topics.<lb /><lb />The Foundation wants to do whatever it can to help outdoor drama as a whole,<lb />and individual theatre companies. There are a number of ways it can do that,<lb />and one of them is to assist in audience development. Thats where you guys:<lb />come in, because we can't think of anyone who does a more splendid job at<lb />marketing then you. But, as Margaret pointed out to me on the phone, your<lb />approach is somewhat different than most of the other dramas. Your direct<lb />mail campaigns are unique, the quality of your promotional pieces, photos,<lb />news stories, etc., are all top drawer.<lb /><lb />Heres the point: if the Paul Green Foundation established an annual award<lb /><lb />to support a hands-on, in depth workshop at the annual outdoor drama conference<lb />each October, would you guys entertain the idea of receiving the first award?<lb />It would mean flying all three of you to the annual conference (this year in<lb />Bardstown, KY, home of The Stephen Foster Story, October 24-26, 1991), where<lb />we would block out a significant amount of conference time during which you,<lb /><lb />as a team, would explain your marketing philosophy, present your campaign<lb />outline, distribute samples of your printed materials, and field questions<lb /><lb />from workshop particpants. This would be more than the usual panel presentation.<lb />It would last two to three hours and be considered a major element of the<lb />conference.<lb /><lb />The good news is that this could be entirely funded by the Paul Green Foundation<lb />(all your expenses, plus an honorarium for Texas). And, our current thinking<lb />is that this would be publicized as the first annual Paul Green Seminar in<lb />Theatre Management. The idea behind this is to honor management teams who<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00056280_0002" />
        <p>have achieved significant success in theatre management (you), and in sharing<lb />your philosophy and skills, help train other teams in the business.<lb /><lb />The Foundation committee considering this idea is on the fast track, hoping to<lb />have a formal proposal to give to the board before very long. In fact, we've<lb />been meeting every week for some time. Our next meeting, Monday, June 3,<lb /><lb />we would like to nail down this idea of the Annual Paul Green Seminar in<lb />Theatre Management. If you all would be receptive to this idea, I feel<lb /><lb />sure the committee will recommend to the board that we adopt it officially,<lb />and consider the Texas management team to be the first recipient.<lb /><lb />How much money are we talking about? Well, expenses for the three of you<lb />to travel to and attend the annual conference in Bardstown. Then, we would<lb />like to present the Heritage Foundation with an honorarium. We haven't<lb />pinpointed an amount, but I suspect it would be in the neighboorhood of<lb />$500, perhaps more.<lb /><lb />So, this is short notice, and all conjecture at this point; but I would like<lb />to call you on Monday if I may, to get your reaction. The committee meets<lb />Monday afternoon at 4:00pm (our time). If you feel positive about this idea,<lb />I would like to report that to the committee so that it can put an official<lb />proposal together for the board. All I'm looking for is a general reaction<lb />from you; no firm commitments. If you would entertain this idea, I think<lb />the committee will more forward. If it does not feel right for you, I would<lb />need to know that also.<lb /><lb />Sorry for the short notice, but sometimes good ideas sneak up behind without<lb />much warning.<lb /><lb />Hope everyone is well. Margaret: thanks again for your call today. I am<lb />going to revaluate our formula and also quiz Mark on what he has?~done in<lb /><lb />cott..J. Parket<lb />Director<lb /><lb /></p>
