Each one is<lb />unique in its focus, but all are alike in that they share a love for<lb />their park and care for its heritage. The others:<lb /><lb />Banks Vernonia Linear Parkway<lb />Cape Blanco (North Bend)<lb />ae Meares Lighthouse &amp; Wildlife Refuge<lb />(Oceanside)<lb /><lb />Collier (Klamath Falls)<lb />Elijah Bristow (Dexter to Eugene)<lb /><lb />Old Fort Stevens<lb />Shore Acres (North Bend)<lb />Silver Falls<lb />Tryon Creek (Portland)<lb />Vista House (Corbet)<lb />Yaquina Bay (South Beach)<lb /><lb />Institute of Outdoor Drama<lb /><lb />by Martha Maclver<lb /><lb />Lessons Learned At<lb />My Old Kentucky Home<lb /><lb />I've just returned from a dynamite conference. When 75<lb />managers and directors of outdoor drama get together there's only<lb />one topic of conversation from first cup of coffee in the moming<lb />until midnight: pageants, pageants, pageants.<lb /><lb />7 The conference was conducted by .the Institute of<lb />Outdoor Drama, of which Champoeg is a member, and it was<lb /><lb />hosted with genuine southern hospitality by the Stephen Foster<lb /><lb />Drama Association, in Bardstown, Kentucky.<lb /><lb />I felt a little like a freshman on campus. Not only was<lb />this my first outdoor drama conference, but Champoeg is one of<lb />the "baby" pageants. We're just ten years old and our attendance<lb />is modest. [By comparison, Ramona Pageant in Califomia has<lb />been around since 1923, and Texas! has an annual attendance in<lb />excess of 100,000!] But it was wonderful how all those veterans<lb />took this freshman under their wings, sharing their best ideas and<lb />offering welcome advice.<lb /><lb />The Paul Green Seminar in Theatre Production:<lb />Marketing Texas-Style, which was just one of the sessions in<lb />the four-day conference, was a step-by-step plan for promoting<lb />outdoor dramas. It was presented by the promotions team from<lb />Canyon, Texas. According to these experts, there are some<lb />things that we are doing just right, and some things that we are<lb />doing very wrong.<lb /><lb />As a result of this workshop, two managerial changes<lb />I'll institute at Champoeg for the 1992 season will be an<lb />emphasis on marketing about a day's drive from Champoeg so<lb />that we will be reaching tourists when they still have time to<lb />change their plans and come to the pageant, and we will begin<lb />taking telephone reservations so that people will know in<lb />advance that they have guarantecd seating.<lb /><lb />This is also the year we can move up to a four-color<lb />souvenir program. Fair warning to local businesses: we'll be out<lb />selling ads after the new year!<lb /><lb />Another of the sessions which stands out from the<lb />conference was one conducted by playwright/composer Billy Edd<lb />Wheeler. He walked us through the composition of a song from<lb />his musical play Young Abe Lincoln, beginning with the "idea"<lb />and then developing a melody, lyrics ??~and musical arrangement.<lb />Because he had taped some of his working sessions, we could<lb />actually hear the development of the song. |<lb /><lb />This is really just a tiny bit of what I learned. I hope<lb />that you'll be able to see the evidence of that learning in some<lb />exciting and successful changes at Champoeg.<lb /><lb />' - While in Kentucky I spent one day visiting every<lb />historic site in driving distance, trying to pick up additional ideas<lb />for historic interpretation that we can apply. And by the way, .<lb /><lb />_ there really is a "My Old Kentucky Home." It was once the _<lb /><lb />home of a second cousin of Stephen Foster and he wrote that<lb />famous song after visiting there. The home and its grounds are<lb />now part of the Kentucky State Park system and it is the<lb />showplace for the Stephen Foster Story outdoor musical drama.<lb /><lb />vo ??opent<lb />oF ep heren.<lb /><lb /></p>
