          <lb />THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA<lb />AT<lb />CHAPEL HILI<lb /><lb />utdoor Drama Phe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<lb />1328 CB# 3240, NCNB Plaza<lb /><lb />Chapel Hill. N.C. 27599-3240<lb />August 1, 1990<lb /><lb />Mr. Billy Edd Wheeler<lb />P.O. Box 7<lb />Swannanoa, NC 28778<lb /><lb />Dear Mr. Wheeler:<lb /><lb />Good to talk with you on the phone yesterday. I was<lb />delighted to hear that there is a possibility of your<lb />coming to Cherokee to participate in the Institute?Ts<lb />Annual Managers, Directors and Promoters Conference,<lb />October 5-7.<lb /><lb />As I mentioned, we plan to move the Conference around the<lb /><lb />?ocountry from time to time, giving everyone an Opportunity to<lb />explore the different amphitheatres and support facilities of<lb />the various dramas. Going to Cherokee will allow us to look<lb />at a fine example of an older facility which has been<lb />maintained in excellent condition.<lb /><lb />Each year, there are a number of individuals attending the<lb />Conference who are in the business of planning new outdoor<lb />dramas. They come to the meeting armed with specific<lb />questions about how to put together a production. They want<lb />to talk with playwrights, directors, managers, composers,<lb />architects and designers. So, with that in mind, were<lb />organizing a blue ribbon panel that will address many<lb />questions from these planning groups. The panel is<lb />tentatively titled: "Open Forum: The Planning and<lb />Development of a New Outdoor Historical Drama."<lb /><lb />Bob Britton, director of Trumpet in the Land, will serve as<lb />moderator of the panel. Others on the panel will be Carl<lb />Hayden from Mark Twain (Elmira, New York), Melanie Patterson<lb />from The Life and Times of Jesse James (Smithville, Missouri)<lb />and Don Baker from Stonewall Country (Lexington, Virginia).<lb />I?ove suggested to Bob that he ask each panel member to<lb />briefly give some background on his or her involvement in<lb />outdoor drama, say a few words on a specific aspect of<lb />planning, and then to leave the bulk of the meeting open for<lb />questions from the floor.<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00056192_0002" />
        <p>You are obviously well-qualified to address story-line<lb />development, playwrighting and composition of the musical<lb />score, and we would be very grateful if you would join us for<lb />the session, scheduled for Saturday, October 6, from 1:30pm<lb />until 3:00pm.<lb /><lb />Of course, there will be other panels, workshops, facility<lb />tours, performances and informal social gatherings, and as<lb />soon as the printed program is off the press, I will be sure<lb />you receive a copy. In the meantime, I am enclosing page<lb />proofs from the forthcoming issue of U.S. Outdoor Drama (in<lb />press) which gives a brief synopsis of the meeting.<lb /><lb />As with all things, it seems, we are on the fast track in<lb />putting together the program and anticipate going to press<lb />with the brochure very soon. I am sure your schedule is<lb />complex and travel plans effect many others in your life.<lb />We would be most appreciative to hear from you on this as<lb />soon as possible. If you are unable to attend, we will<lb />certainly understand and hope to meet another time.<lb /><lb />I hope all went well for you in Nashville.<lb /><lb />/<lb />Sincerely,<lb /><lb />Scott J. Parker<lb />Director<lb /><lb /></p>
