        <p>THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA<lb />Al<lb />CHAPEL. HILI<lb /><lb />The University of North Carolina<lb />CBF 3240, NCNB Plaza<lb /><lb />Chapel Hill, N.C. 27899-32.4¢<lb /><lb />August 1, 1990<lb /><lb />Ms. Jessica Andrews<lb /><lb />Director, Theatre Program<lb />National Endowment for the Arts<lb />1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW<lb />Washington, DC 20506<lb /><lb />Dear Jessica:<lb /><lb />I was delighted to meet you over the phone yesterday and<lb />greatly relieved to find that you don?Tt hold anything against<lb />me because I hail from...dare I say it...North Carolina.<lb />Truly, you must be a woman with the "milk of human kindness"<lb />running liberally through her veins. Bless you.<lb /><lb />This is to officially invite you to represent the Theatre<lb />Program of the National Endowment for the Arts at the Annual<lb />Managers, Directors and Promoters Conference of the Institute<lb />of Outdoor Drama, October 5, 6, and 7 in Cherokee, North<lb />Carolina. This is the only national meeting for those<lb />involved in the production, management or planning of outdoor<lb />drama.<lb /><lb />As I mentioned on the phone, it is a rather wide-spread<lb />field, numbering 75 companies (many with fully-paid casts and<lb />a sprinkling of union members), in some 30 states from Kodiak<lb />Island, Alaska, to St. Augustine, Florida and points in<lb />between. I am enclosing a list of outdoor drama companies,<lb />and page proofs from the forthcoming issue of U.S. Outdoor<lb />Drama (in press). Together, they should give you some idea<lb />of the scope of the outdoor drama movement nationally.<lb /><lb />Jessica, we think your presence at this national meeting will<lb />serve several important purposes. First and foremost, it<lb />will be an opportunity for the leaders of outdoor historical<lb />drama to meet personally with the the director of the NEA<lb />program which represents their profession. Secondly, it will<lb />give you a chance to get to know us and our end of the<lb />business. And finally, if you are willing to take part in<lb />the formal round-table discussion on "Ethics and Professional<lb />Theatre Practice," we will all benefit from your insight as a<lb />fellow professional.<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00056183_0002" />
        <p>The topics we plan to deal with during the round-table will<lb />be thought-provoking, hard-hitting and stimulating. Panel<lb />members will be presented with difficult ethical situations<lb />and will be asked to consider possible courses of action in<lb />hypothetical cases with no clear-cut solutions. There will<lb />be vigorous diffferences of opinion on some issues and on<lb />others, unanimous agreement. But, in general, I think we can<lb />anticipate an exciting session characterized by a healthy<lb />intellectual grappeling with important ethical issues.<lb /><lb />Dr. Dale Miller, chairman of the theatre department at Purdue<lb />University and artistic director of the outdoor drama The<lb />Battle of Tippecanoe (Lafayette, Indiana), will lead the<lb />round table. Members of the panel include Tony Walsh, dean<lb />of the Florida School of the Arts and artistic director of<lb />Cross and Sword (St. Augustine, Florida); David Mills, a Yale<lb />University graduate who currently serves as general manager<lb />of Viva El Paso! (El Paso, Texas); Margaret Bonamico, general<lb />manager of Trumpet in the Land (Dover, Ohio); and Dr. John<lb />Ahart, director of theatre at the University of Illinois in<lb />Champaign-Urbana, and playwright of Your Obedient Servant, A.<lb />Lincoln (Petersburg, Illinois).<lb /><lb />Jessica, I am embarrassed to say that the Conference does not<lb />have the resources to meet your expenses in attending this<lb />meeting. In asking you to attend, we hope that you might be<lb />able to include the Conference as part of a trip to the<lb />Southeast visiting other groups and theatres.<lb /><lb />As with all things, it seems, we are on the fast track<lb />putting together the program and anticipate going to press<lb />with the program very soon. I am sure your schedule is<lb />complex and travel plans effect others on your staff. We<lb />would be grateful to hear from you on this as soon as<lb />possible. If you are unable to meet with us, I am<lb />particularly eager to have the woman?Ts perspective on ethics<lb />represented on this round table and will concentrate my<lb />search with that in mind.<lb /><lb />Thanks again for returning my call on such short notice. Our<lb />thoughts and best wishes are with you as you, like Beowolf,<lb />take on Grendel. Beware, his cave is bloody and piled high<lb />with bones and money. We will do all we can from this end.<lb /><lb />a<lb />Aa iakr spot e :<lb /><lb />coOtt J. Parker<lb />Director<lb /><lb /></p>
