        <p>THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA<lb />AT<lb />CHAPEL HILL<lb /><lb />August 9, 1990<lb /><lb />Dr. Kermit H. Hunter<lb />9004 Villa Park Circle<lb />Dallas, TX 75225<lb /><lb />Dear Dr. Hunter:<lb /><lb />In January of this year, I was fortunate enough to have been<lb />asked to follow Mark Sumner as the director of the Institute.<lb />I gratefully accepted the offer and, while much of the time<lb />here thus far has been spent learning the ropes, I have made<lb />several changes in the operations.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the most immediate is that we will be moving the site<lb />of the annual Managers, Directors and Promoters Conference<lb />from Chapel Hill. Although the meeting has been held in<lb />other locations in the past, including Boone, NC, Branson,<lb /><lb />MO, and Amarillo, TX, it has now been five years since weve<lb />met on the site of an operating company.<lb /><lb />So, this year we will gather in Cherokee and enjoy the<lb />hospitality of the Cherokee Historical Association. The<lb />dates are set for October 5-7.<lb /><lb />The programming of the Conference will also vary somewhat<lb />from that of previous conferences. There will be an emphasis<lb />on touring the CHA facilities, a performance of Tom DeTitta?Ts<lb />THE REACH OF SONG (an historical drama of the north Georgia<lb />mountains which opened in 1989), and a look at the<lb />relationship of the Cherokee culture to the play itself.<lb /><lb />Of course, we will continue to have workshops and panel<lb />sessions, but for this year, at least, there will be fewer<lb />than in the past. Those that we do have planned will include<lb />some of the newer faces in outdoor drama from across the<lb />country.<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00056147_0002" />
        <p>On Saturday evening, October 6, we are preparing a special<lb />program to follow an authentic Indian feast. It will be an<lb />informal presentation by individuals associated with UNTO<lb />THESE HILLS and several Cherokee, who will help us understand<lb />the relationship between Cherokee culture, the community and<lb />the play. Bill Hardy will serve as the Master of Ceremonies<lb />and I°ve asked Barry Hipps to help put together the program.<lb /><lb />A tentative program for the evening would include the<lb />following:<lb /><lb />Robert Bushyhead would join us to deliver the<lb />invocation in the Cherokee language.<lb /><lb />The dining hall would be decorated with many<lb />and varied Cherokee arts and crafts gathered from<lb />private collections around the reservation.<lb /><lb />Bill Hardy would relate some of his experiences<lb />with UNTO THESE HILLS over the years. I?Tve asked<lb />him to invite a member of the 1950s production<lb />company to pass on an anecdote or two from the<lb />early days of the show.<lb /><lb />I°m writing now to ask if you would join us for this special<lb />evening. As playwright of this benchmark outdoor historical<lb />drama, your experiences, particularly relating to the<lb />research involved in writing the play, and your relationship<lb />with the Cherokee and community leaders, would be of great<lb />interest to all of us.<lb /><lb />Further, your thoughts on outdoor historical drama and the<lb />unique challenge of writing for this genre would be<lb />especially helpful to those who are now in the process of<lb />planning and developing new outdoor dramas.<lb /><lb />As I remember, it has been several years since you?Tve been<lb />able to attend the annual meeting. Many of the "old hands"<lb />continue to come each year, of course; but there are more and<lb />more new people on the scene, including many who are<lb />currently planning dramas for their communities. My best<lb />guess is that the early and mid-90s will see a number of new<lb />productions up and running.<lb /><lb />Because it is now less than two months until the Conference<lb />itself, we are on the fast track in putting together the<lb />program for it. As soon as the entire program has been<lb />finalized, I will be sure you receive a copy.<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00056147_0003" />
        <p>I am embarrassed to say that the Institute cannot afford to<lb />meet your expenses in traveling to the Conference, but hope<lb />that, as you have been associated with our operation for many<lb />years, you will understand and forgive.<lb /><lb />If the dates of October 5, 6, and 7 are possible for you, we<lb />would be honored to have you join us in Cherokee for this<lb />special program. As soon as you have a chance to look at<lb />your schedule, I would be grateful to hear from you.<lb /><lb />Many thanks.<lb /><lb />Sincerely/,<lb /><lb />Director J<lb />ce. Frank aa<lb /><lb />¢<lb />pil Hardy Hipp<lb /><lb /></p>
