          <lb />NEWS<lb />Oh, lookit�?Ts<lb />Oh, Kay!<lb /><lb />SAR ER ee ite ere<lb />RANK TAKES OVER MECCA<lb /><lb />Mecca Leisure PLC, the UK-<lb />based group of clubs, cafes, and<lb />other entertainment venues,<lb />has been acquired by the Rank<lb />Organisation for an approxi-<lb />mate $860 million. Mecca<lb />Leisure USA, the American<lb />subsidiary, with holdings such<lb />as the Hard Rock Cafe<lb />franchises, six central Florida<lb />restaurants and dinner theatres,<lb />and the Fun-n- Wheels go-cart<lb />park, is expected to operate<lb />without substantial change<lb />while Rank assesses its future<lb />activities.<lb /><lb />In the meantime, Rank has<lb />made several key staff and<lb />board of directors changes at<lb />UK Mecca: Sir Patrick Meaney<lb />has been appointed chairman of<lb />the board, Michael Gifford has<lb />been named chief executive,<lb />and N.V. Turnbull will be<lb />Mecca�?Ts finance director.<lb /><lb />With the acquisition, Rank<lb /><lb />has reorganized its multina-<lb /><lb />tional holdings into four main<lb />operating divisions. The film<lb />and television division, headed<lb />by James Daly, incorporates<lb />the Film and Television<lb />Services and Precision<lb />Industries businesses. Terence<lb />North heads the leisure<lb />division, which handles Mecca<lb />nightclubs and dinner theatres;<lb />Rank Ahnert; and Rank<lb />Leisure.
