RANK TAKES OVER MECCA
Mecca Leisure PLC, the UK-
based group of clubs, cafes, and
other entertainment venues,
has been acquired by the Rank
Organisation for an approxi-
mate $860 million. Mecca
Leisure USA, the American
subsidiary, with holdings such
as the Hard Rock Cafe
franchises, six central Florida
restaurants and dinner theatres,
and the Fun-n- Wheels go-cart
park, is expected to operate
without substantial change
while Rank assesses its future
activities.
In the meantime, Rank has
made several key staff and
board of directors changes at
UK Mecca: Sir Patrick Meaney
has been appointed chairman of
the board, Michael Gifford has
been named chief executive,
and N.V. Turnbull will be
Mecca�?Ts finance director.
With the acquisition, Rank
has reorganized its multina-
tional holdings into four main
operating divisions. The film
and television division, headed
by James Daly, incorporates
the Film and Television
Services and Precision
Industries businesses. Terence
North heads the leisure
division, which handles Mecca
nightclubs and dinner theatres;
Rank Ahnert; and Rank
Leisure. This division will also
be responsible for Rank�?Ts
partnership in Universal
Studios Florida. The other two
areas are the holidays and
hotels division and the
recreation division.
At present, Mecca USA is
developing two 800-seat
dinner theatres in California for
possible 1991 openings, as well
as a musical theme park near
Universal City in southern
California.

Richard Rodgers Theatre on
October 25. The book of the
1926 George & Ira Gershwin
musical comedy has been
reworked from its original
Long Island yachting crowd
milieu, moving the locale toa
Harlem speakeasy and
incorporating a black cast.
The revival, directed and cho-
reographed by Dan Siretta
(who originated the new
concept for Oh, Kay! at
Goodspeed Opera House in
1989), features costumes
designed by Theoni V.
Aldredge, sets by Kenneth
Foy, and lighting by Craig
Miller. Oh, Kay! is the 88th
show produced by David
Merrick.
