The wooden base is made of two thin veneers of walnut. The upper one has an oval cut out of it with a bevel on the under side in order to act as a bezel setting for the cabochon. The lower veneer has two holes that allow the riveted ends of the ring shank to sink into it, so that there is a flat surface for the top veneer and cabochon to adhere to.
