Art auctioneer Fred Kessler pre-sided over the event, and art consul-tant Patricia Fuller discussed eachwork before it went for bid.The pieces included in the auctionwere presented by students, faculty,and alumni of ECU. Prominent NewYork City artist Cynthia Careson alsocontributed works, and private citizensdonated pieces as well.The art works were auctioned to~help fund student scholarship, tours ofmuseums and galleries, and visits withcontemporary artists. The increasedclassroom capacity is expec-ted to allow the university toschedule more classes duringthe popular 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.class time.The new addition to theECU campus houses theSchool of Business, the de-partment of foreign languages,the International Affairs andHonors Program, the BB&TInstitute for Leadership Devel-opment, and the English de-partment. In fact, the reloca-tion finally unites the Englishdepartment, the largest de-partment of campus, in onestructure. Previously, profes-sors of that area had beensplit between Austin buildingand Wichard Annex.The elegant and modernfacade also houses state ofthe art technology in the formof new equipment and learn-ing aides. Brother Eugenewas also part of the relay teamand qualified himself for the200-meters.Veteran coach Bill Carsonteamed speedy Kelvin Wrighton,Junior Robinson and Ike Robin-son with the McNeills to formthe 4 x 100-meter relay team.That relay team was impressivein a first-place finish at theIC4As at Yale in May.For Lee McNeill, theNCAAs were the beginning of a132"busy summer. Pirates on the Rebound !Nothing great isever accomplishedwithout enthusiasm�states a plaque in ECUs newbasketball coach, Mike SteelesOffice. ~~Enthusiasm is, shall wesay, the new Pirate Coachsmotto. Coach Mike Steele isEast Carolinas seventeenthhead basketball coach. Steelewas previously head coach ofnationally ranked De Paul Uni-versity.While at De Paul, Steeleturned a troubled basketballprogram, which had a 5-20 rec-ord one year before Steele tookover, to a program that had thehighest amount of wins in DePauls history. Steele took DePaul all the way to the NCAA fi-nals, all within six years.His hopes are to turn thePirates into a team that is ascompetitive as possible. Hav-ing good competition in eachgame, creates a ~team that thestudents and the communitycan be proud of.Steele says that ~~when ateam plays with enthusiasm, thefans become more interestedand enthusiastic, with supportfor the home team. He sayswith that, ~~the wins will come intime.� For example,� he says,a mere 50 people would showup when he started coachingat De Paul, ~~then at the end ofsix years, the games were soldout!�With ~Enthusiasm, hehopes that ~~the students willlook forward to the event.�Once this is accomplished, hehopes this will start a tradition.For four years Steeleplayed varsity basketball forPurdue University. He startedhis Junior year, and he servedas team captain his final sea-sonThrough his knowledge andexperience in the game, hefeels that, ~~the best thing aboutbeing a coach is | can appreci-ate what the players are goingthrough.�.Although Steele feels that ~athletics are a good learning | &device where people learn howto obey rules and regulations, 7*and learn a sense of responsi-bility, he also feels that ~~toomuch time is focused on athlet-ics. Steele feels people needto be involved in other activitiesas well. Steele places ~~lots ofemphasis on a degree, but helikes to ~~get them to participatein other activities. Despite thedisappointments, the team end-ed up tied for sixth place in theseven team league.First round conferencetournament action handed theLady Pirates a 81-71 defeat toGeorge Mason.Alma Bethea, the only sen-ior on the team was the leadingscorer averaging 13.4 pointsand 8.7 rebounds. Bethea fin-ished her career the fifth alltime leading scorer in schoolhistory with more than 1100points.The second leading scorerturned out to be Gretta Savageaveraging 10.7 points and 5.7rebounds.Head coach Pat Piersonhopes the future will be brighterfor the Lady Pirates with the en-tire team returning except AlmaBethea. The play directed by Terence Lamude,was a smash hit with the audience. With talented perfor-mances headed by Joseph Mascolo, and Jennifer Savidge,the night was sure to be promising.The first scene takes place in September with HarryBrock, a junk dealer, played by Mascolo, iaviave mom olU\Vaalway to the top of the economic ladder in which he is quitesuccessful. There is only one problem, his live in olislistsiarerBillie Dawn, played by Savidge. Shes a little Bimbo� andhas little education.To keep Billie out of the way, Harry hires a writer froma local newspaper, Paul Verral, played by former ECU stu-dent Steven Williford, to help teach her to become a littlemore respectable. Kennedy, campaigning for thepresidency. AlcoholMany of the students at ECU in the1987-1988 year were painfully facedwith the dilemma of being too young toconsume alcohol. When the state drink-ing age changed in 1986, many youngstudents watched the coveted privilegeslip a few years further out of reach.But this was not the first time inECU history that students were facedwith this problem. In the early 1960's,on campus drinking was forbidden re-gardless of age. In fact, a student foundguilty of driving while intoxicated OFFcampus was also subject to dismissal.In the later 60s, ECU relaxed theirdrinking policy somewhat to state thatthe university strongly disapproved ofalcohol consumption, but students wereallowed to drink in the privacy of theirown rooms as long as all dorm ruleswere obeyed.
