ECU Faculty considering collective bargaining<lb />
By BARBARA MATHEWS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
ECU faculty members may soon be<lb />
considering a proposal to enter into<lb />
collective bargaining, according to Dr.<lb />
Lloyd W Benjamin, chairman of the<lb />
Faculty Senate.<lb />
The results of a symposium held last<lb />
Friday concerning collective bargaining<lb />
procedures will be presented to the<lb />
Faculty Senate at its December meeting.<lb />
"Collective bargaining is an attempt<lb />
to unionize the faculty - to be<lb />
represented by an organization which<lb />
would be an intermediate in bargaining<lb />
for wages and fringe benefits according<lb />
to Benjamin.<lb />
"The purpose of the symposium was<lb />
to gather information and see the options<lb />
available to the faculty. No positive<lb />
actions, however, were taken he said.<lb />
According to Benjamin, ther eis a law<lb />
in North Carolina forbidding the state<lb />
from entering into collective bargaining<lb />
procedures.<lb />
The symposium provided information<lb />

Meeting conditions for allowing<lb />
alcohol on campus as set by the Board<lb />
of Trustees, "university policies concern-<lb />
ing the possession and consumption of<lb />
alcoholic beverages do not contravene<lb />
Federal. State, or Municipal law<lb />
regarding their purchase, possession or<lb />
consumption<lb />
No alcoholic beverages of any kind<lb />
may be purchased or sold pn campus.<lb />
This is prohibited by state law. The legal<lb />
age requirements for purchase and<lb />
consumption of alcohol will be upheld by<lb />
the university.<lb />
NO tudent activity fees shall be used<lb />
for purchase of alcoholic beverages, as<lb />
as to how to bypass the law by not<lb />
referring to the action sot be taken as<lb />
collective bargaining said Benjamin.<lb />
Three organizations provided inform-<lb />
ation at the symposium on collective<lb />
bargaining techniques: the American<lb />
Association of University Professors<lb />
(AAUP); the American Federation of<lb />
Teachers (AFT); and the National<lb />
Educational Association (NEA).<lb />
According to Dr. Fred D. Ragan,<lb />
president of the local AAUP chapter, the<lb />
AAUP is the collective bargaining agent<lb />
for 35 campuses across the nation.<lb />
"Collective bargaining is a feasible<lb />
idea - it works said Ragan.<lb />
"The AAUP has always argued that<lb />
the university is a community of<lb />
students, faculty, and administration,<lb />
and that there must be shared<lb />
responsibility in the governance of the<lb />
university<lb />
Ragan said the issues involved in<lb />
seeking collective bargaining go beyong<lb />
the wage and salary issues.<lb />
"Salary and fringe benefits have<lb />
generated recent interest, but they are<lb />
not the major concern<lb />
"The concern over the faculty having a<lb />
professional voice in governing the<lb />
university drives as many faculty<lb />
members towards collective bargaining<lb />
as the bread-and-butter issues he said.<lb />
According to Ragan, collective<lb />
bargaining may be a more successful<lb />
venture if it is used by the consolidated<lb />
university system as a whole.<lb />
"It would be better if various<lb />
campuses were to move forward<lb />
together. Advantages would accrue from<lb />
having the other universities as part of<lb />
any collective bargaining venture said<lb />
Ragan.<lb />
According to Dr Henry C. Ferrell.<lb />
chairman of the consolidated university<lb />
system's Faculty Assembly, an alter-<lb />
native plan has been recommended<lb />
within the past three years.<lb />
KENNY FOSCUfc OF THE GREENVILLE PEACE COMMITTEE PASSES OUT LEAFLETS<lb />

the American Civil Liberties Union the 753 page bill to reform the criminal justice<lb />
system is vaguely written and could seriously jeopardize freedom of dissent against<lb />
the government in times of "national emergency<lb />
stipulated by the Board of Trustees<lb />
Also in conjunction with state law, no<lb />
brown-bagging will be permitted at any<lb />
event on campus. Spirituous liquors<lb />
(containing more than 14 percent alcohol)<lb />
will not be allowed at any campus<lb />
function. Only beer and unfortified wines<lb />
will be permitted and then only in<lb />
designated areas of campus with<lb />

"The Faculty Assembly has recom-<lb />
mended a three-part plan First, a<lb />
minimum competency raise would be<lb />
given every two years, consisting of a<lb />
minimum raise of $300-$700. Second,<lb />
adjustment of salaries based on cost of<lb />
living increases would be made<lb />
"Third, a merit raise would be given<lb />
those who have achieved outstanding<lb />
accomplishments. This raise would be<lb />
funded by an institutional pool and<lb />
would not come from the individual<lb />
institutions themselves said Ferrell.<lb />
In addition, an attempt would be<lb />
made for parallel pay income throughout<lb />
the university system to equalize salaries<lb />
of similarly-qualified faculty members,<lb />
according to Ferrell.<lb />
"Even if the general administration<lb />
were to adopt the plan or one similar to<lb />
it. support would be required from the<lb />

Who's in charge?<lb />
In talking about government, any type be it local, state,<lb />
national, or even the student government, the old question<lb />
about "Who's in charge here is always asked.<lb />
It is a key to responsible government that the people who<lb />
elect officials know just who is running their government.<lb />
And. in the case of the student government and the<lb />
executive branch government at ECU that question of "Who's in<lb />
charge here" is becoming more and more appropriate as time<lb />
goes by.<lb />
To be sure, the executive is a leader, at least in name. One<lb />
that was elected by a vote of the student body last Spring.<lb />
It was the will of the student body then that this person<lb />
should demonstrate the power and ability of leadership over the<lb />
next 12 months.<lb />
But, in the last few months it has become increasingly clear<lb />
to students who view the workings of the executive branch up<lb />
close day-in and day-out that the man elected to lead is taking<lb />
more and more a back seat in the operations of the student<lb />
government.<lb />
And, in the place of the man elected, the role of the SGA<lb />
president is being assumed, more and more everyday, by an<lb />
appointed officialnot an elected official but an appointed<lb />
official.<lb />
This appointed official, who has the title of Assistant to the<lb />
President, or something like that, has assumed a greater role in<lb />
the running of the student government association during the<lb />
last few months.<lb />
That position of power and influence was increased ten fold<lb />
when the SGA vice-president took a leave of absence. And,<lb />
instead of holding elections to name a new VP, the president<lb />
simply turned over the powers of the VP office to his<lb />
assistantthe appointed official.<lb />
Since gaining the new position the appointed official has<lb />
known no bounds to his wheeling and dealing in the operations<lb />
of the student government.<lb />
We are sure he will seek the post of president this Spring,<lb />
and at least then he will hold the position in name-he already<lb />
holds that position in reality around the SGA office. Hopefully<lb />
the person tapped to serve as president will get a better grip on<lb />
his office before some appointed official steals it from under his<lb />
nose.<lb />
And, if he is not going to get a better hold on the office,<lb />
then maybe he should step down as the VP did-then there<lb />
would be absolutely no doubt about "Who's in charge here<lb />
Until either one of these options is taken one must still<lb />
wonder just who does run the show over on the second floor of<lb />
Mendenhall.<lb />
"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without<lb />
newspapers, or newspapers without government, I should not hesitate a moment to<lb />
prefer the latter.<lb />

Need for Coliseum<lb />
A The action by the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and<lb />
Merchants Association to request a study on the feasibility of<lb />
building a conference center in Greenville is most appropriate<lb />
we feel. Apparently that study will center only on a facility that<lb />
will accomodate 750 people. Some officials already feel that<lb />
such a building would be more than adequate for the types of<lb />
programs that would be staged in it by various groups.<lb />
But, in light of the continuing growth of this university<lb />
athletically and in other forms we feel that studying the<lb />
feasibility of just a 700 person facility is a waste of time and<lb />
energy.<lb />
Any study to build a conference type facility in Greenville<lb />
should be tied directly to a coliseum type operation we believe.<lb />
The present ECU facility, Minges Coliseum, is totally<lb />
inadequate. To call the facility a coliseum is to demote the true<lb />
"coliseums" at Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte.<lb />
Minges is nothing more than a glorified high school gym.<lb />
The basketball facility has all the character of a warehouse, with<lb />
out bleachers.<lb />
In light of the push by the university to upgrade it's athletic<lb />
programs one has to wonder how long you can push for<lb />
improvement on the court with better players and programs<lb />
without having to push for a better court for the players to play<lb />
in.<lb />
Talk of expanding Ficklen has abounded for some time.<lb />
But, just as importantly is the need to expand Mingesor<lb />
replace it completely.<lb />
The "Pirates" basketball program showed marked<lb />
improvement last year and their is every reason to expect more<lb />
this year and in the future.<lb />
So, as the program upgrades itself surely we must look to<lb />
enlarge the facility to seat a minimum 10,000 people which<lb />
would allow the home scheduling of teams other than Georgia<lb />
Southern and South Carolina School for the Blind.<lb />
The study of a conference center is a good one. But, the<lb />
study group will miss a good opportunity if it can't see to link<lb />
such a conference center into a large coliseum that this<lb />
university needs.<lb />

Letter in UNC student newspaper cited<lb />
Ellis' opinion challenged<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
This letter is in response to the<lb />
reprint from the Daily Tar Heel from Mr.<lb />
Ralph Ellis. As one student who formerly<lb />
attended the almighty University of North<lb />
Carolina and who now attends school<lb />
here at East Carolina, I feel that the<lb />
opinions of Mr. Ellis are totally<lb />
unjustified. His opinion that Carolina has<lb />
class and that nothing like the Halloween<lb />
situation at East Carolina could happen<lb />
at Chapel Hill because of its class, is the<lb />
biggest piece of crap I have ever heard.<lb />
While attending Carolina, I found people<lb />
of all kinds; some had class (as<lb />
apparently Mr. Ellis assumes he himself<lb />
possesses) and some people had no<lb />
class whatsoever. Mr. Ellis-you have no<lb />
right to place such a degrading<lb />
generalization upon the students here at<lb />
East Carolina. Yes, I admit that we have<lb />
people here with no sacred class,<lb />
but-Mr. Ellis we also have people who<lb />
possess just as much and even more<lb />
class than the people at Carolina. I am<lb />
glad that we here at East Carolina have a<lb />
variety of people, not just one kind, even<lb />
if that one kind were to be those with<lb />
class, because it's the different types of<lb />
people who make up the world we have<lb />
to live in-and you've got to learn how to<lb />
Writer f c vors Pabst blue<lb />

Responding to the absurd letter by<lb />
Ralph Ellis in "The Daily Tar Heel" and in<lb />
the "Fountainhead a couple of Ralph's<lb />

make a few statements. Using Ralph's<lb />
opinion, If Carolina does have more<lb />

himself by visiting East Carolina on<lb />
Halloween night? We heard of no<lb />
complaints from him while he visited us.<lb />
Ralph was even dressed up as Sherlock<lb />

We would like to make a new division<lb />

Ralph, does the football score blind your<lb />

Student does not think<lb />
all letters should be signed<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
In reference to Mike Taylor's<lb />
proclamation concerning the necessity of<lb />
signing all correspondence to the<lb />
Fountainhead Forum: I believe that in<lb />
some cases, this identification is not<lb />
necessary nor desirable. One recent<lb />
example where I feel the signature should<lb />
have been omitted (and was) concerned<lb />
the last panty raid. Surely all will<lb />
remember the incident where a girl from<lb />
Tyler was treated rather badly by a group<lb />
of dudes in front of Beik dorm. She was<lb />
truly abused and insulted by them; and<lb />
she felt it necessary to write in to the<lb />
Fountainhead to express herself. I feel<lb />
she had a valid point to make and do not<lb />
feel it would have been strengthened with<lb />
the addition of her name and address. On<lb />
the contrary, she would have been<lb />
humiliated. Nobody expected to see her<lb />
name at the end of that letter.<lb />
As a general rule I am all for signing<lb />
your name to what you believe, but have<lb />
a heart, some view points should be<lb />
aired without a signature.<lb />

If I were you Mr. Ralph Ellis, I would<lb />
think twice about making such an<lb />
accusation about the students here at<lb />
East Carolina and about making such a<lb />
bold statement that nothing like that<lb />
would happen at Carolina-what are you?<lb />
A fortune teller? Anyway, you yourself<lb />
showed just as little class as anyone else<lb />
did Halloween here in Greenville. Why<lb />
did you come to Greenville for Halloween<lb />
in the first place, if not to have a good<lb />
time? Everyone downtown went for the<lb />
same reason-the episodes that followed<lb />
much drink and good time were in no<lb />
way any indication of the class of people<lb />
involved-merely a stimulated chain of<lb />
events that no one person, or just the<lb />
people from Greenville can be held<lb />
responsible for.<lb />
Come on, Mr. Ralph Ellis, different<lb />
strokes for different folks. I stayed in<lb />
Granville Towers myself, and the people<lb />
there are not different from people<lb />
anywhere else. But personally, I like the<lb />
people here better than at Carolina,<lb />
because they are not afraid to open up<lb />
and be the hell raisers that they are, or<lb />
the quiet mice they are-if they so choose.<lb />
So what if alot of people in Greenville<lb />
happen to be hell raisers and not quiet<lb />
mice (or any other quiet subdued<lb />
creature-no offensive to the mice of the<lb />
world)?? I bet if everybody at Carolina<lb />
went downtown on one specific night,<lb />
everybody, you might see just how much<lb />

To Fountainhead:<lb />
There is a need for the Gold Bus to<lb />
wait for the Purple Bus to arrive at the<lb />
stoplight at 10th & College Hill. I have to<lb />
ride the Purple Bus from Village Green to<lb />
Memorial Gym. On Tuesday and<lb />
Thursday I have a 12:30 P.E. class at<lb />
Minges which is on the Gold Bus<lb />
schedule. On the schedule it has the<lb />
Purple Bus departing Memorial Gym at<lb />
17 after the hour. The Gold Bus departs<lb />
10 & College Hill at 20 after the hour.<lb />
However, the Gold Bus leaves before the<lb />
Purple Bus gets there. All that is needed<lb />
is for the Gold Bus to wait for the Purple<lb />
Bus to arrive at the stoplight to see if it<lb />
has any passengers on the Purple Bus.<lb />
This way I, and others who have<lb />
expressed the same feeling, can make<lb />
our classes.<lb />

To Fountainhead:<lb />
We thought you might be interested<lb />
in a copy of the following letter that we<lb />
submitted to the editor of the Daily Tar<lb />
Heel at Carolina.<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
In response to the publication of the<lb />
letter by Ralph Ellis in the Tuesday,<lb />
November 11, 1975, issue of the Daily Tar<lb />
Heel, we find Mr. Ellis' remarks about the<lb />
East Carolina University student body<lb />
absolutely disgusting.<lb />
The riot of October 31, 1975, was not<lb />
induced by the students but was<lb />
instigated by overreaction on the part of<lb />
the Greenville Police Force. How can Mr.<lb />
Ellis base his judgment on the "class" of<lb />
the entire ECU student body on the<lb />
actions of a few enraged, intoxicated<lb />
persons, among which half were not even<lb />
ECU students?<lb />
We both were present and sober the<lb />
night the unfortunate Halloween incident<lb />
occurred in downtown Greenville.<lb />
Observing from a safe distance, we<lb />
witnessed undue force by the police; and<lb />
a very small minority of the crowd was<lb />
engaged in brick throwing and window<lb />
breaking.<lb />
Mr. Ellis' irrational statement regard-<lb />
ing the "class" of ECU students<lb />
obviously reveals his lack of good<lb />
judgment. How does he know that some<lb />
of the students at Carolina wouldn't<lb />
exhibit the same reactions as the unruly<lb />
few here when provoked by police under<lb />
the conditions of the situation present<lb />
here October 31?<lb />
If Mr. "High and Mighty" Ellis feels<lb />
he has such "class" that it is beneath his<lb />
dignity to associate with ECU students,<lb />
then he should stay the hell where he is!<lb />

December, which is already halfway<lb />
through the academic year? As a student<lb />
and contributor of my student fees to<lb />
this bungle, (what else can you call it?) I<lb />
urge others who cannot see the<lb />
seriousness of this error, and those who<lb />
do, to call for a chango in the SGA<lb />
concerning the Treasury Branch!<lb />
To pay student activity fees, as I and<lb />
over 11,000 others have done, and then<lb />
have them mismanaged as the SGA has<lb />
so proficiently done, is the height of<lb />
absurdity. This college cannot expect us<lb />
to pay so much a quarter for activity<lb />
fees, and then have the SGA<lb />
miscalculate the total amount! Was this<lb />
miscalculation a result of human error?<lb />
Or was it computer error, as those who<lb />
have had to go through drop-add will<lb />
admit CAN and DOES happen? A<lb />
computer error in itself is not the SGA's<lb />
fault. But why wasn't the $90,000<lb />
discrepancy discovered before now,<lb />
before the treasury was reduced to a<lb />
mere $15,000? This last question is a<lb />
clue to where the actual fault lay. With<lb />
the SGA for NOT discovering the error,<lb />
whether human or computer, before now!<lb />
Also, I cannot understand why,<lb />
according to SGA President Jimmy<lb />
Honeycutt, an error concerning a<lb />
discrepancy of $90,000 is "not as serious<lb />
as it could be How much more serious<lb />
can it be? One doesn't go around saying,<lb />

Are you also saying that all we will<lb />

An approved sponsor shall be present<lb />

Possession and consumption of<lb />
alcoholic beverages in the privacy of<lb />
dorm rooms has been allowed since a<lb />
ruling by then Attorney General Robert<lb />
Morgan about four years ago, said<lb />
Mallory. The ruling from Morgan declared<lb />
dorm rooms secondary residences with<lb />
the individual chancellors as landlords.<lb />
Use of alcohol in the rooms was<lb />
regulated from that time, by the<lb />
chancellors.<lb />
However, says Mallory, consumption<lb />
of alcohol must be in the privacy of the<lb />
room. In other words, he said, loud<lb />
partying and beer kegs in the rooms are<lb />
not allowed.<lb />
Alexander, Tucker and Mallory agreed<lb />
that no real problems with alcohol on<lb />
campus are forseen under the new<lb />
policies.<lb />
"We've been having beer blasts in the<lb />
residence hall basements for three or<lb />
four years and haven't had a bit of<lb />
trouble stated Mallory.<lb />
Alexander said, "Once the policies are<lb />
known I think there will be less<lb />
sneaking<lb />
However, all agreed that violators will<lb />
be apprehended<lb />
"We are not seeking violators said<lb />
Alexander, "but we are not going to turn<lb />
our heads either. We will enforce these<lb />
policies until the Board of Trustees<lb />
changes them he said.<lb />
The policies list public display,<lb />
profanity, obscenity, intoxication and<lb />
disorderly conduct as some examples of<lb />
violations.<lb />
"Drunkenness and disorderly conduct<lb />
may subject the offender to disciplinary<lb />
action andor arrest by law enforcement<lb />
personnel (Section B-4,c).<lb />
Since violations on campus will be<lb />
against university regulations, offenders<lb />
will be taken before the Honor Council<lb />
where actions could lead to fines and or<lb />
restrictions of certain privileges, said<lb />
Tucker. Violations in Mendenhall could<lb />

Corrections system<lb />
needs improvement<lb />
December &-12 is Corrections Week in<lb />
North Carolina.<lb />
ECU Dept. of Corrections Professor<lb />
Herman G. Moeller recently commented<lb />
on needed improvements in the N.C.<lb />
Corrections System.<lb />
Moeller pointed out that, although<lb />
most decisions made by judges are<lb />
subject to review, sentencing in North<lb />
Carolina is not subject to review. Also,<lb />
judges are not required to state the<lb />
reasons for the sentences they impose.<lb />
"The N.C. governor has appointed a<lb />
Studies Commission on sentencing<lb />
which I hope will make recommendations<lb />
leading to the requirement that judges<lb />
explain the reasons for their sentences<lb />
Moeller said.<lb />
In proportion to its population, North<lb />
Carolina confines more people than does<lb />
any other state, he added.<lb />
"To a large extent, this fact is the<lb />
result of our lack of alternatives to penal<lb />
confinement. There are no community-<lb />
based programs. We have just begun to<lb />
implement standards recommended by<lb />
the National Advisory Commission on<lb />
prison standards Moeller continued.<lb />
Among other alternatives to penal<lb />
confinement suggested by Moeller was<lb />
the need for the development of<lb />
community facilities, group homes for<lb />
juvenile delinquents, wider use of work<lb />
release for misdemeanors and reintegra-<lb />
tion centers needed for men and women.<lb />
Moeller, who has had 33 years<lb />
experience with the U.S. Bureau of<lb />
Prisons, based his remarks on studies<lb />
made over the past 40 years.<lb />
"The establishment of alternative<lb />
programs will make it less necessary to<lb />
rely on penal institutions Moeller<lb />
continued. He added that these services<lb />
were not cheap, but that the operation of<lb />
N.C. penal institutions was becoming<lb />
even more expensive.<lb />

arriving at these policies said Mallory.<lb />
"I hope the students will respect the<lb />
efforts of the students, faculty, and<lb />
administration in getting these he said.<lb />
FUTURE PROSPECTS<lb />
Dean Tucker said there had been no<lb />
problems surrounding alcohol on campus<lb />
thus far. "But, I think how the students<lb />
react within these regulations will<lb />
determine the policies of the future he<lb />
said.<lb />
ECU is self-governing where areas of<lb />
alcoholic consumption are concerned - as<lb />
long as the Board of Trustees agrees.<lb />
"You have to be realistic when dealing<lb />
with the Board of Trustees said<lb />
Mallory. "You can't go all the way now or<lb />
you will lose. You must go part of the<lb />
way now and eventually work up to more.<lb />
We prepared a policy that we could live<lb />
with, the Board of Trustees could live<lb />
with, and that wouldn't violate City<lb />
ordinances he said.<lb />
Alexander explained that, "Our<lb />
policies are about middle of the road.<lb />
We're about like Chapel Hill and<lb />
Greensboro<lb />
When asked about possibilities of<lb />
'getting beer on the mall Alexander said<lb />
it was something to be worked for, "in a<lb />

"There's no law against it said<lb />
Mallory.<lb />

Feeling sick?<lb />
It's 'flu' time again<lb />
By DENNIS C. LEONARD<lb />
Have vou been feeling tired and run<lb />
down lately and you know that Speech<lb />
125 could no' have possibly been that<lb />
nauseating this early in the quarter? The<lb />
proper label for this nausea (contrary to<lb />
popular belief) is probably influenza, the<lb />
dreaded illness that retards one's<lb />
motivation and disrupts normal body<lb />
functions. To find out more information<lb />
about the subject, Fountamhead retreat-<lb />
ed to the bowels of the student infirmary<lb />
and interviewed ECU's leading medical<lb />
authority, Dr. C.F. Irons.<lb />
According to Dr. Irons, "There is<lb />
probably a slight increase in the number<lb />
of cold and flu cases outside of the<lb />
mmm<lb />
university, but in comparison to last<lb />
year, the number of cases have dropped<lb />
considerably Dr. Irons further noted<lb />
that "There is a new, more severe strain<lb />
of influenza that is supposed to reach the<lb />
U.S. later on this year but he was not<lb />
quite positive of the proper name for this<lb />
new type. Dr Irons also added that no<lb />
cases of this new flu strain have been<lb />
reported at the ECU infirmary as of the<lb />
present. The major symptoms noted were<lb />
tired, aching muscles, an elevated<lb />
temperature, and reduced motivation. Dr.<lb />
Irons personally feels that the easiest<lb />
way to avoid the often inevitable flu is to<lb />
"avoid loss of sleep, avoid excessive<lb />
body fatigue, and avoid contact with<lb />
those persons who are sick with the flu<lb />
Remember also that the flu is a highly<lb />
communicable disease and can be easily<lb />
contrived through contact with infectious<lb />
persons.<lb />
Dr. Irons most importantly suggests<lb />
that "plenty of rest" is the prime remedy<lb />
in fending off the flu this year. Dr. Irons<lb />
urges those students who may have<lb />
aching muscles and high temperatures to<lb />
report immediately to the infirmary so<lb />
that it can be properly treated by the<lb />
infirmary's medical staff. Good luck in<lb />
fighting off those flu viruses and may<lb />
your bacterial defenses always be strong.<lb />
4) You have been receiving cards in the mail because:<lb />
a) your name is on the Greenville Women's club mailing list.<lb />
b) your name is on the Hollywood Porno Co. mailing list.<lb />
c) the IRS is afraid you're going to audit them.<lb />
d) all the male professors who have propositioned you heard you've been<lb />
conferring with the Dean of Women.<lb />
5) EZU has scheduled a long break because:<lb />
a) there's a nasty rumor circulating that the powers that be have decided to make<lb />
Pitt a dry county for the rest of 1975. jfc<lb />
b) Chancellor Jenkins has been invited to star in the biograprry of Sam Ervin.<lb />
c) SGA legislators need the time off to earn the money Larry (Keep the big boys<lb />
honest) Chesson thought they had.<lb />
d) an enormous supply of EXLAX was accidentally dropped into the city water<lb />
supply.<lb />
6) Your girlfriend has been carrying mistletoe on dates bemuse:<lb />
a) it is part of her psoriasis therapy.<lb />
b) she has to , as part of her sorority initiation.<lb />
c) she can communicate better with parasitic plants than she can with you.<lb />
d) it's part of a new Oriental sexual fad.<lb />
7) O. Tannenbaum is:<lb />
a) your Jewish psychology prof.<lb />
b) Greenville's newest head shop.<lb />
c) Greenville's only disco.<lb />
d) a new obscene Phrase (O. Tannenbaum! I locked my keys in the car).<lb />
If this quiz has served to indicate that you are indeed lacking in holiday<lb />
enthusiasm, you may try one of several things to gain that pizazz you lack.<lb />
You can get that sentimental lump in your throat by volunteering to be a guinea<lb />
pig for the Greenville Police Dept. riot training seminar.<lb />
You can go to the SGA to borrow the money for a two-week vacation in the<lb />
Caribbean.<lb />
You can purchase cans of spray paint and literally "paint the town red" (and<lb />
green).<lb />
If nothing works, and you still scowl at the Salvation Army Santa Clause, we<lb />
suggest you contact Ebeneezer Scrooge, president of OOHHA (Organization of<lb />

director suggested that Mendenhall start<lb />
another club.<lb />
According to Mendenhall, "we are<lb />
dividing the club into three groups at<lb />
present; the advanced players, those<lb />
who are above average, and the average<lb />
players.<lb />
"We have plans to establish a fourth<lb />
group, for beginning players, in the<lb />
future. The more experienced club<lb />
members will provide instruction for the<lb />
novices he said.<lb />
Until now the club's activities have<lb />
been limited to round robin playing with-<lb />
in the group. The organization will begin<lb />
competition with other schools starting<lb />
with a warmup tournament with Rose<lb />
'SsSSSS"S 'SSSS.<lb />
High Saturday.<lb />
Their first intercollegiate tourney will<lb />
take place in January at Virginia<lb />
Polytechnic Institute.<lb />
According to Mendenhall, the club<lb />
meets each Wednesday at 7:30 in room<lb />
14, Mendenhall Student Center. Anyone<lb />
interested in chess, whether from a<lb />
beginner's standpoint, or as an<lb />
experienced player, is urged to attend the<lb />
meetings.<lb />

Steve Bickley is currently holding a<lb />
senior art show in the Kate Lewis<lb />
Gallery Whichard Building.The show has<lb />
three aspects: "mail" art, or conceptual<lb />
art, sculpture, and drawing.<lb />
The "mail" art is, in Steve's words,<lb />
"a concept;a response; a tangible reality<lb />
which people can relate to and create an<lb />
individual response that differs from my<lb />
original concept<lb />
For this exhibit Bickley has sent off<lb />
many letters to famous people with tags<lb />
torn from pillows, which is a violation of<lb />
the law. He asks the receiver to make a<lb />
comment and to send him something in<lb />
return. His most interesting reply came<lb />
from Richard Nixon who returned a form<lb />
letter.<lb />
Bickley is challenged by his<lb />
involvement in sculpture. He comments,<lb />
"Many people think art is only<lb />
two-dimensional, but in sculpture there<lb />
is a whole new dimension. One can see<lb />
and feel the space-form relationship. The<lb />
sculpture I create la the result of a totally<lb />
personal relationship between the steel<lb />
and myself. I have tried to become one<lb />
with the steel<lb />
An example of Bickley's work can be<lb />
found in front of the library. The piece is<lb />
yellow and represents the largest<lb />
encounter of space Steve has dealt with.<lb />
It works with the concept of<lb />
maneuverability and is so large that one<lb />
person cannot move it. The sculptor has<lb />
to think of ways to put it together and to<lb />
move it, sometimes involving the use of<lb />
people or machines.<lb />
Like the mail art and the sculpture,<lb />
Bickley's drawings represent intense<lb />
feelings. He believes that if he cannot<lb />
make art 24 hours a day he cannot fulfill<lb />
himself as an individual or an artist.<lb />
Bickley also feels a responsibility to<lb />
expose people to conceptual art<lb />
This fall he won a $500 purchase<lb />
award at the Southeastern Contemporary<lb />
Artist Association Show held in<lb />
Winston-Salem, NIC. His future plans<lb />
include going to Italy this summer for a<lb />
sculpture workshop, or attending<lb />
graduate school in Georgia.<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
Robert Altman's Nashville is a<lb />
landmark in film-making. Even the<lb />
occasional movie-goer can recognize it as<lb />
one that will set new trends for years to<lb />
come. To begin with, a script by Joan<lb />
Tewekesbury is made up almost<lb />
completely of sub-plots. Each individual<lb />
in the story becomes a complete<lb />
character. Altman does this by giving<lb />
almost all of the characters equal time<lb />
and importance on the screen and, with a<lb />
touch of genius, easily ties all of them<lb />
together in a startling climax. Another<lb />
innovation is that almost all of the songs<lb />
performed were written by the singers<lb />
themselves. This creates a much deeper<lb />
relationship between performer and song,<lb />
which is in turn transferred to the viewer.<lb />
In Nashville. Altman is trying to do<lb />
the same thing that he did in M.A.S.H.<lb />
He succeeds here, I think, beyond his<lb />
wildest hopes. What he has really shown,<lb />
in a satirical form, is America. Even<lb />
though we do not want or like to admit<lb />
it, that is what America is all about. The<lb />
story could be set in almost any city in<lb />
America and. except for the country<lb />
music atmosphere, would be the same.<lb />
Very simply, Nashville deals with the<lb />
lives of its twenty-four characters and<lb />
what they live, feel and experience during<lb />
a five day period.<lb />
The action runs concurrently with a<lb />
huge political campaign for presidential<lb />
hopeful Hal Phillip Walker. These events<lb />
are emphasized on an equal basis with<lb />
their underlying causes and the people<lb />
involved<lb />
The performances are all excellent<lb />
NV-50-6 Lilv Tomlin<lb />
NV-237-6A Henry Gibson<lb />
NV-R-139-9 Karen Black<lb />
NV-R-21M0 Ronee Bjakley<lb />
and many of the actors are either<lb />
unknown or are making a dramatic<lb />
appearance for the first time. There are,<lb />
however, outstanding performances that<lb />
need to be recognized. Pay particular<lb />
attention to Karen Black, Barbara Harris,<lb />
Keith Carradine, Geraldine Chaplin, Gwen<lb />
Welles, Henry Gibson and Lily Tomlin. It<lb />
must be said, however, that the movie<lb />
'belongs' to Ronee Blakley as Barbara<lb />
Jean. She is in real life a country<lb />
singer-composer and this marks her<lb />
screen debut. The performance she gives<lb />
is completely overwhelming and without<lb />
a doubt one of the greatest ever put on<lb />
film. If she is not awarded the Oscar this<lb />
year, I will have completely lost my faith<lb />
in the Academy.<lb />
The music that is performed,<lb />
fortunately does not fit exactly into the<lb />
country-western style. Listen to the lyrics<lb />
that Karen Black wrote in "Memphis" and<lb />
"Rolling Stone These along with Henry<lb />
Gibson's "200 Years" and "For the Sake<lb />
of the Children" and Keith Carradine's<lb />
"I'm Easy" and "It Don't Worry Me" fits<lb />
the characters and the movie perfectly.<lb />
Once again, Ronee Blakley is tops in this<lb />
category. Her songs, "Tapedeck in His<lb />
Tractor "One I Love You "Idaho<lb />
Home and "Dues along with all of the<lb />
others are what Nashville is all about<lb />
and they all reflect the singers who<lb />
perform them, remarkably well.<lb />
Nashville will be a forerunner to<lb />
movies of the future, especially in this<lb />
particular genre. I suspect it will forever<lb />
remain a clasoic along side such greats<lb />
as King Kong and Citizen Kane.<lb />
Without a doubt, Robert Altman has<lb />
made his movie, and easily secured his<lb />
place in the history of cinema.<lb />

Dvered to be totally accurate. The<lb />
ation of seeing honorable, if not<lb />

There were flaws in this show of both<lb />
frivolity and conscience. Unfortunately as<lb />
when something is excellent, as the<lb />
show generally was, the flaws appear like<lb />
mud on stained glass. Leslie Steward as<lb />
Abigail Adams was one of these darts of<lb />
mud. Though a strikingly beautiful<lb />
woman, her voice lacked both the range<lb />
and the sincerity to sing the high notes<lb />
of devotion required of "Till Then" and<lb />
"Yours, Yours, Yours She is co-<lb />
producer of this show and there is no<lb />
doubt that it was this position that<lb />
enabled her, at least in part, to be more<lb />
readily acceptable for the role. At the risk<lb />
ofsounding chauvinistic, it was the other<lb />
female lead that was a resounding weak<lb />
ness of the show. Her voice, reminiscent<lb />
of the Bronx was far too airy on the high<lb />
notes and the words were lost. It was the<lb />
vitality of Kressen and Perkins that<lb />
pulled her through the song. At this<lb />
point, for the only time in the show, the<lb />
choreography breaks down slightly as<lb />
she flitters about (either like Scarlet<lb />
CHara on broken glass or unnecessarily;<lb />
your opinion B.T.). Thankfully, her<lb />
appearance on the stage was brief.<lb />
Not as notable as the above, but<lb />
equally uninspired was the performance<lb />
of T.J. Though he had a booming voice<lb />
there was no passion in his words that<lb />
one must assume a man who could write<lb />
like Jefferson, had. He was stiff and<lb />
seemed almost uncomfortable on stage.<lb />
The directorial strokes were, for the<lb />
most part, excellent. Though Adams<lb />
begins the musical apart from the throng,<lb />
when the curtain is lifted and he enters<lb />
the assembly, they fall together like<lb />
leaves, softly and without conscious<lb />
effort.<lb />
The Congress blended together well<lb />
as a group. Their background, which<lb />
could have been easily cacophonious was<lb />
melodious and well tempered. The<lb />
interplay between the Delaware delegates<lb />
was delightful, yet not distracting. The<lb />
m absorbing Hopkins added to the<lb />
le humanity of the congregation.<lb />
Perhaps the most poignant scene in<lb />
the show was at the end with the reading<lb />

the haunting cries of Secretary<lb />

Sociology retreat discusses<lb />
major misconception<lb />
By JOHN DAYBERRY<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Twenty undergraduate students pre-<lb />
sent at the recent sociology-anthropology<lb />
retreat at Atlantic Beach were highly<lb />
concerned with whether or not students<lb />
are really benefiting from college<lb />
experience, according to ECU sociology<lb />
professor John Maiolo.<lb />
The retreat, sponsored by the SGA,<lb />
was attended by 10 ECU faculty<lb />
members, and 11 graduate students, in<lb />
addition to the undergraduates.<lb />
The students showed a lot of<lb />
concern about job opportunities, and<lb />
with the job-counseling services they are<lb />
receiving on campus said Maiolo.<lb />
"It seems that certain advisors on<lb />
campus are saying that jobs in<lb />
sociology-related fields are simply not<lb />
available.<lb />
"But a Purdue study showed that<lb />
unemployment among sociology gradu-<lb />
ates was only one percent, which<lb />
compares quite well with the unemploy-<lb />
ment rate for all jobs.<lb />
"It is also a disservice to students to<lb />
tell them that they cannot get a job in<lb />
anthropology, because they can said<lb />
Maiolo.<lb />
Among 24 suggestions presented by<lb />
the students to the faculty were six<lb />
dealing with employment opportunities,<lb />
including a departmental bulletin board<lb />
for jobs, and a departmental brochure<lb />
informing prospective employers of skills<lb />
of the ECU graduate.<lb />
"Students want somebody to care<lb />
about their in-class experiences, and<lb />
their special educational needs said<lb />
Maiolo.<lb />
"They feel alienated from their<lb />
professors, and hesitate to let their<lb />
special needs be known.<lb />
"The sociology-anthropology depart-<lb />
ment plans to do something about this,<lb />
as we feel that the students, as paying<lb />
constituents have the right to have their<lb />
needs met<lb />
The students attending the retreat<lb />
asked for undergraduate representation at<lb />
the departmental level, a better fit<lb />
between catalog course description and<lb />
course itself, and a channel for student<lb />
problems and complaints in the<lb />
sociologyanthropology club.<lb />
The students asked for more<lb />
enthusiasm for teachers, unstructured<lb />
exams and term papers, and more<lb />
opportunity to develop writing skills.<lb />
"All of these suggestions will be<lb />
acted upon said Maiolo.<lb />
"I think the retreat was a total<lb />
success for the students and faculty of<lb />
this department.<lb />
"Students should invest the time and<lb />
energy to plan retreats in other<lb />
departments.<lb />
"A retreat is a perfect opportunity to<lb />
let down the barriers between students<lb />
and faculty, which must be done if<lb />
communication is to be achieved<lb />
CBS hunting special<lb />
labeled a 'cheap shot'<lb />
CBS' "Guns of Autumn a<lb />
controversial television examination of<lb />
hunting in the U.S. has been labeled a<lb />
"cheap shot" by more than one critic who<lb />
has objected to the program's telescoped<lb />
focus on animal killings that few would<lb />
describe as representative examples of<lb />
hunting. But if the CBS report failed<lb />
dismally as an objective journalistic<lb />
endeavor, the waves of controversy it<lb />
generated could not have been more<lb />
successful in suggesting both the growth<lb />
of the anti-hunting debate as a national<lb />
issue and the complexity of people's<lb />
attitudes toward hunting.<lb />
In a survey of hunters, non-hunters,<lb />
and anti-hunters in Michigan, researcher<lb />
William W. Shaw found that people do<lb />
not favor or oppose hunting for any<lb />
single reason, let alone any isolated<lb />
assessment of the "facts Instead,<lb />
hunting attitudes are formed from a wide<lb />
range of experiences that each individual<lb />
builds up and integrates over the years.<lb />
Not so surprisingly, where you grow up,<lb />
the kinds of experiences you have with<lb />
bloodshed, and the years of formal<lb />
education you accumulate all play<lb />
important roles in determining how you<lb />
look at hunting as an adult.<lb />
That is a fact which Shaw believes<lb />
should not be overlooked. For if either<lb />
side of the hunting debate thinks it is<lb />
m<lb />
going to win over the other with rhetoric<lb />
and stereotyping - and the extremists on<lb />
both sides certainly try - they are bound<lb />
to be disappointed. As Shaw explains,<lb />
when attitudes toward hunting are<lb />
developed over the years of personal and<lb />
educational experiences so that they<lb />
come to rest on a broad-based personal<lb />
philosophy, attacking any one element of<lb />
that philosophy is not going to change<lb />
anyone's mind.<lb />
s far as Shaw is concerned, that fact<lb />
creates a special challenge for the<lb />
wildlife management profession to open<lb />
up its ranks to individuals who are<lb />
responsive to new popular attitudes<lb />
toward wilflife. For the anti-hunting<lb />
movement continues to grow in strength.<lb />
Popular attitudes toward wildlife are<lb />
equally significant. In Shaw's survey,<lb />
hunters as well as anti-hunters gave<lb />
greater value to simply seeing wildlife,<lb />
knowing that thev exist, and recognizing<lb />
their role in the ecological balance than<lb />
they did to the opportunity for hunting<lb />
they provide.<lb />
As the country continued to urbanize<lb />
and popular views of wildlife change, the<lb />
wildlife management profession, Shaw<lb />
believes, must broaden its scope of<lb />
activities to include more attention to the<lb />
non-hunting values of wildlife if it is to<lb />
maintain and broaden its base of public<lb />
support.<lb />

New Federal rulings<lb />
School press protected by First Amendment<lb />
By TINNEY S. CLARK<lb />
Historically, many colleges have<lb />
treated their student-run newspapers<lb />
more as extensions of their institutions<lb />
than as full-fledged members of the<lb />
press. Student journalists have been free<lb />
to report and comment so long as they<lb />
did not dishonor or disgrace the<lb />
institution.<lb />
However, the benevolent paternalism<lb />
under which many campus newspapers<lb />
have operated in the past is yielding.<lb />
During the past six or seven years, a<lb />
number of federal courts have been<lb />
interpreting the "freedom of the press"<lb />
clause of the First Amendment to the<lb />
U.S. Constitution to include student<lb />
publications.<lb />
Many college journalists and adminis-<lb />
trators do not yet realize the extent of the<lb />
changes, says the Bulletin of the Center<lb />
for the Rights of Campus Journalists, a<lb />
student-run oprganization that assist<lb />
college papers: "Censorship and harass-<lb />

right does not 'materially and sub-<lb />
stantially interfere with requirements of<lb />
appropriate discipline in the operation of<lb />
the school<lb />
"The state is not necessarily the<lb />
unrestrained master of what it creates<lb />
and fosters a federal district judge said<lb />
in a case involving Fitchburg State<lb />
College in Massachusetts. "Having<lb />
fostered a campus newspaper, the state<lb />
may not impose arbitrary restrictions on<lb />
the matter to be communicated<lb />
"The law requires that the school<lb />

One entire edition of The Windmill, a<lb />

On Saturday, the Wildcats will come<lb />
here to Greenville to help the Pirates<lb />
open their home schedule.<lb />
Despite his inability to gather fouls,<lb />
Gerdy is the Wildcats' scoring leader with<lb />
a 21.7 average in the first three games.<lb />
Gerdy has also been the 'Cats' leading<lb />
scorer in each of the games so far.<lb />
Dore's stamina is not an isolated<lb />
problem, as the Wildcats have been<lb />
forced to run players in and out all<lb />
season to keep a fresh squad in.<lb />
Consequently, the leading Wildcat<lb />
rebounder, Eppa Rixey, is averaging only<lb />
six rebounds a game.<lb />
Rixey, whose father was a Hall of<lb />
Fame pitcher for tne Cincinnati Reds, is<lb />
also the team captain this year. Before<lb />
the season, Rixey had hoped Dore, at<lb />
7-2, would be a big help in the<lb />
rebounding. Last year a lot of pressure<lb />
was put on Rixey to produce, as the<lb />

men. We are going to have to be able to<lb />
rebound to build up our game.<lb />
"We have a team on the court that<lb />
averages 6-7 and if three of our big men<lb />
play together we could be awesome. It<lb />
will be a matter of working on different<lb />
groups until we have a set team to work<lb />
with<lb />
The Wildcats are still doing that,<lb />
searching for the right combination. That<lb />
is also basically what ECU was trying to<lb />
do in its early games.<lb />
So when Davidson travels to Minges<lb />
this weekend, it will mean the matchup<lb />
of two teams who are still searching for<lb />
the best team. One of them will come a<lb />
bit closer to that goal than the other.<lb />

Sports<lb />
Carson optimistic<lb />
 If<lb />
Bill Carson, entering his tenth year as<lb />
d coach of the two ECU track and<lb />
;ld team, optimistically anticipates<lb />
f to be his finest indoor track season.<lb />
;m Carson attributed his optimism for the<lb />
n to the outstanding athletes on the<lb />
squad, many returning from last<lb />
n, who are necessary to compete in<lb />
conference. He said the recently<lb />
cted NCAA legislation restricting the<lb />
ber of athletes a school may include<lb />
its traveling squad will be an<lb />
tage to the ECU team in that now,<lb />
so than in the past, the strength of<lb />
must lie in the quality of its<lb />
etes rather than in the size of the<lb />
71.<lb />
"ECU has always had class athletes<lb />
ing to Coach Carson, "but not as<lb />
y as other schools in the<lb />
ference<lb />
As stated by the NCAA limitations, as<lb />
iy as twenty-two members of the<lb />
ng team are allowed to compete in<lb />
events. The hosting team, in<lb />
trast, may enter no more than<lb />
nty-seven athletes in competition.<lb />
While considering the ECU indoor<lb />
k personnel, Carson approaches the<lb />
n from the events in which he feels<lb />
team will most likely excel in the<lb />
rthern Conference, to the accomplish-<lb />
its of which the team may gain<lb />
xjnition on the national level, and<lb />
My to the events in which the team<lb />
weakest.<lb />
Of the events in which East Carolina<lb />
uld excel, Coach Carson foresees the<lb />
to dominate the 60 yard dash this<lb />
son. Carter Suggs led the squad with<lb />
overall best time of 6.1, followed by<lb />
Austin and Robert Franklin each of<lb />
m maintain a 6.2 clocking, and<lb />
rice Huntley with a time of 6.3.<lb />
son plans to run Al Washington,<lb />
vin Alston, Donny Mac, and Marvin<lb />
kens in this event, also.<lb />
The 440 yard dash is another area of<lb />
strength in the indoor events. Carson<lb />
expects to run Maurice Huntley and<lb />
Robert Franklin exclusively in the<lb />
quarter, along with Carter Suggs and<lb />
Charlie Moss, an ECU football player.<lb />
In the 600 yard run and the 880 yard<lb />
run, East Carolina anticipates displaying<lb />
its dominance in distance running. Ben<lb />
Duckenfield and his brother, Mel, each<lb />
received considerable recognition in the<lb />
600 yard run last season, and, as<lb />
ut upcoming in<lb />
returning sophomores they will lead the<lb />
team in this event.<lb />
In addition to the Duckenfield<lb />
brothers, Carson will run James<lb />
Freeman, Jody Deloach, Keith Urguhart,<lb />
and Val Dez Charvis.<lb />
Carson expects an outstanding<lb />
season for the 880 yard run by featuring<lb />
Charles Avery whose overall best time is<lb />
1:53.1, and Jim Wlllet with a 1:53.6<lb />
clocking.<lb />
Two field events, the long jump and<lb />
 III<lb />
r track<lb />
high hurdles, are other areas of fine<lb />
performance expected of the ECU track<lb />
team during the indoor track season.<lb />
East Carolina's outstanding long jumper,<lb />
Willie Harvey, will be returning this year<lb />
after an injury in the 1975 season.<lb />
Carter Suggs, the outdoor long jump<lb />
champion of the 1975 season along with<lb />
George Jackson, Al McCrimmon, and<lb />
Keith Allamong will each compete in this<lb />
event.<lb />

Grapplers to meet Oregon State, Lehigh<lb />
By SAM ROGERS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
After a lengthy three week layoff, the<lb />
East Carolina wrestling team swings back<lb />
into action this weekend when the Pirate<lb />
matmen travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to face<lb />
nationally ranked Lehigh and Oregon<lb />
State along with Indiana State in a<lb />
quadrangular meet.<lb />
East Carolina will meet Oregon State<lb />
Friday night and will battle Lehigh<lb />
Saturday afternoon and Indiana State<lb />
Saturday night.<lb />
"We just feel real fortunate to be able<lb />
to wrestle agains teams of this caliber<lb />
said Pirate head coach John Wei bom.<lb />
"Lehigh and Oregon State are both truly<lb />
outstanding teams loaded with talent and<lb />
I hope we don't overlook Indiana State<lb />
because they also have a fine team. But<lb />
we're looking forward to competing<lb />
against all three teams and I think we<lb />
will give a good account of ourselves<lb />
Lehigh finished fifth in last year's<lb />
NCAA Tournament while Oregon State<lb />
was right behind the Engineers in<lb />
seventh place. Both teams are definite<lb />
contenders for this year's national<lb />
championship.<lb />
Lehigh is led by NCAA champion<lb />
Mike Lieberman (177 or 190), Don<lb />
McCorkel (Hwt.), and Lance Leonhardt<lb />
(118-126). Mike Frick who won the NCAA<lb />
title at 134 last year and was named the<lb />
Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament<lb />
is academically ineligible and will sit out<lb />
the entire 1975-76 season.<lb />
Oregon State's top performer is Larry<lb />
Bielenberg who won the heavyweight<lb />
division in the NCAA Tournament. The<lb />
Ducks also have Bob Ziebart who placed<lb />
fifth in the 150 pound weight class in the<lb />
nationals.<lb />
While Lehigh, Oregon State and<lb />
Indiana State boast some of the top<lb />
wrestlers in the country, the Pirates have<lb />
'enty of outstanding performers which<lb />
s. ould fare well this weekend.<lb />
The Pirates' fearsome foursome of<lb />
Mik Radford, Ron Whitcomb, Phil<lb />
Mue er and Tom Marriott have a<lb />
combined record of 42 wins and only<lb />
three losses between them. Radford, a<lb />
senior from Morehead City, N.C. has<lb />
swept three tournament titles this season<lb />
at the 190 pound weight class and has an<lb />
overall record of 11-0. Whitcomb, a<lb />
senior from East Rochester, N.Y. who<lb />
wrestles at 177, also has three<lb />
tournament championships to his credit<lb />
with an overall record of 11-0. Marriott, a<lb />
senior from Herkimer, N.Y. has one title<lb />
and a second place finish along with a<lb />
10-1 slate.<lb />
Phil Mueller, a transfer from the<lb />
University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point<lb />
boasts a 10-2 overall record in the 167<lb />
pound weight class and received the<lb />
Outstanding Wrestler Award in the North<lb />
Carolina Invitational Tournament.<lb />
The Pirates will also get plenty of<lb />
help from senior Paul Ketcham (126),<lb />
sophomores Paul Osman (134), Paul<lb />
Thorp (150), along with freshman<lb />
sensation James Kirby (126). Ketcham<lb />
and Thorp are both 9-3 for the year while<lb />
Osman has a fine 9-4 record and Kirby is<lb />
8-2.<lb />
Jeff Curtis (118), Clay Scott (134),<lb />
Paul Prewitt (158), John Williams (Hwt.)<lb />

There comes a time when a columnist must take a stand on a controversial issue.<lb />
At other times, a simple declaration of fact will suffice.<lb />
This is one of those other times.<lb />
Located within the depths of Minges Coliseum are two little rooms which are<lb />
robably the most used rooms in the entire structure, which stretches from the end of<lb />
the basketball area to the end of the swimming pool.<lb />
Two variations of one game are played in the two rooms. The game variations are<lb />
played by college citizens through the middle age in the respect of years. The tall, the<lb />
thin, the thick and the short all take part.<lb />
The only limitation put on the number of people who participate in racquetball and<lb />
handball is that there are only two rooms in which to play. Of course, there are only<lb />
24 hours in the day. too, which in itself restricts participation somewhat.<lb />
Dear readers, this is the most competitive individual game in town. If you don't<lb />
lieve this, try it some time.<lb />
PATTON'S PIRATES<lb />
After reading the quotes which spewed forth from the Pirate locker room following<lb />
Saturday night's loss to VMI, one would think Dave Patton to be slightly out of his<lb />
mind<lb />
But after closer examination of the game reports and box scores, the Ashland,<lb />
Ky flash has the right idea.<lb />
Berating his team after three losses would be somewhat akin to striking a match<lb />
to see if there was gas in the tank. The team consists of 10 individuals who, whatever<lb />
their common motives are, usually have one thing in common:<lb />
They are not going on the court purposely to lose. Their efforts are going towards<lb />
winning. Patton knows this and will continue to show the team prescribed methods of<lb />
winning.<lb />
THE PIRATE SPORTS NETWORK<lb />
This writer had the opportunity to listen in part to the VMI game Saturday.<lb />
Aside from the screaming in the background, the results should be and were<lb />
positive in that the announcers kept up with the game as good or better than any<lb />
heard in the area.<lb />
Considering that there isn't much immediate competition in the area, that could<lb />
sound like a backhanded compliment. But this includes the two Big Brothers (come<lb />
people spell the last word differently) up the road.<lb />
CONGRATULATIONS ONCE AGAIN<lb />
Saturday night the Pirate football team will be honored in Minges Coliseum.<lb />
Among the honorees will be Jim Bolding, Jimbo Walker and Cary Godette, who were<lb />
named to Associated Press All-America teams recently.<lb />
There are all-conference performers in those three and Ken Strayhom, Harold<lb />
Randolph and Ernest Madison.<lb />
These are all outstanding people who deserve all the credit they can get. Come<lb />
give them a hand Saturday night.<lb />

Although no official statistics or scores<lb />
were recorded, the University of Maryland<lb />
finished first ahead of many of the top<lb />
teams in the country.<lb />
Together with the high finish, the<lb />
Pirates put together some team<lb />
highlights which indicate a promising<lb />
season In two of the events, the 000<lb />
freestyle and 400 freestyle, new varsity<lb />
team records were established.<lb />
In the2,000reestyle, the team of John<lb />
Tudor,Thomas Palmgren, Bill Thorne, and<lb />
Stewart Mann broke a previous record<lb />
with a time of 20:13.25. Mann swam the<lb />
fastest leg finishing in 4:53.7.<lb />
Ross Bohlken, Steve Ruedlinger, John<lb />
McCauley, and Thorne teamed together<lb />
in the 400 to establish a 3:12.87 record.<lb />
In these two events the Pirates<lb />
finished fifth and third, respectively.<lb />
The Pirates' best finish was in the 500<lb />
yard crescendo when Ruedlinger,<lb />
Bohlken, Tudor, McCauley, and Alan<lb />
Clancy placed second with a time of<lb />
4:05.0.<lb />
In other relay events the Pirates<lb />
finished among the top six teams in five<lb />
of the remaining events as follows: Fifth<lb />
in the 200 yard free relay in which John<lb />
Clancy swam a fast 21.12 leg: third and<lb />
sixth, respectively in the 400 butterfly<lb />
(3:39.4) and 400 individual relay (3:53.9).<lb />
Despite the Pirates fifth place finish,<lb />
ECU was only eight points away from<lb />
mird place. No divers were taken to the<lb />
meet and had the Pirates had this added<lb />
competition they could have been<lb />
attributed a higher finish.<lb />

m<lb />
tme-Out<lb />
By JOHN EVANS<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
Greenville Sports Club Is A Good Idea<lb />
lecently a group of East Carolina boosters, as well as members of the Athletic<lb />
irtment began a weekly luncheon, which has become known as the "Greenville<lb />
ts Club The idea of this weekly event is to promote athletics not only at East<lb />
ina, but in the Greenville area in general. This writer feels it is about time such<lb />
peration was undertaken and hopes it will be a huge success. rf<lb />
rincipally responsible for the organization of the weekly luncheon are Joe Hallow,<lb />
ie Vincent and Athletic Director Bill Cain.<lb />
he idea of a "sports club" for the Greenville area evolved out of the desire by the<lb />
es Club for an organized Greenville chapter of the Pirates Club and the desires<lb />
area fans to have such an operation similar to those at larger schools.<lb />
en members of the Athletic Department and some of the local media asked<lb />
jt the feasibility of having a press luncheon for the media, to bring the media to<lb />
jnville, and not Greenville to the media, the stage was set.<lb />
incent and Hallow met with Cain and the final arrangements were made where<lb />
3 would be a weekly luncheon at the Ramada Inn at which the ECU coaches and<lb />
sports figures would be speakers and the media would attend free of charge.<lb />
o bring in the public, the Greenville Sports Club set up a buffet lunch for $3.00<lb />
opened it to the public<lb />
he first two meetings have gone over well, with about 100 attending. The majority<lb />
lese people were from the Greenville public and not from the media.<lb />
his writer feels there is a definite need for such a move in the Greenville area to<lb />
promote not only the University's athletics, but also the fine programs at Rose<lb />
School, D.H. Conley and North Pitt High Schools. In addition, the weekly<lb />
neon may well be used as a sports "get together" for the entire Northeast area of<lb />
tate.<lb />
here is some chagrin with the good intentions, though. Even though he was of<lb />
help at the outset with publicity, East Carolina Sports Information Director Ken<lb />
fh has not really supported the program with the time and attitude this writer feels<lb />
hould. After all, isn't promoting East Carolina athletics what Smith's job is all<lb />
(jf This reporter has begun to wonder sometimes if Smith is not so much<lb />
Urned with promoting ECU athletics, as he is in trying to keep his coat tails clean<lb />
anything innovative.<lb />
erhaps it is good that for the most part the SID has stayed out of the<lb />
inization of this affair and that the citizens of Greenville, Hallow and Vincent the<lb />
;t prominent, have been the ones instrumental in promoting this experiment in<lb />
tern North Carolina.<lb />
o Joe Hallow, Charlie Vincent and Bill Cain, and the others who helped form this<lb />
, my hat is off to you for a job well done.<lb />
o those who are interested, the next luncheon will be on January 6 at 12:30.<lb />
r that date, the luncheons will be held every Tuesday for the rest of the year. My<lb />
wishes for its continued success.<lb />
ROSE WINS YET ANOTHER STATE 4-A TITLE<lb />
light around the corner from East Carolina University it appears that Greenville's<lb />
Ie Hiah School is building an athletic program of matchless quality.<lb />
ast Friday, Rose High won the State 4-A football championship by defeating<lb />
. Mecklenberg, 14-13. The win gave Rose another State 4-A championship, the<lb />
jipants having won the State baseball championship this past fall.<lb />
Rose also fields fine teams in other sports, but this feat of winning two State<lb />
js in the same year is, indeed, one which very few schools have been able to<lb />
Itch. Now if the coaches at hast Carolina can only sway some of these athletes<lb />
)ss the street to Minges Coliseum and Harrington Field.<lb /><lb />
CarSOn continued from page 13.<lb />
In the 60-yard high hurdles, Coach<lb />
Carson anticipates Sam Phillips, the<lb />
school record holder in this event, to be<lb />
excellent again this season. In addition<lb />
to Phillips, Marvin Rankins, who, as a<lb />
senior at Bertie High School ran the<lb />
second fastest low hurdle race ever<lb />
recorded in competition, should become<lb />
a primer in this event.<lb />
Although it is still early, Coach<lb />
Carson predicts that Carter Suggs, Larry<lb />
Austin, Sam Phillips, Willie Harvey,<lb />
Herman Mclntyre, and George Jackson<lb />
will have the best chance of entering<lb />
events in the national level during the<lb />
conclusion of the indoor track season of<lb />
1976.<lb />
When considering East Carolina's<lb />
weakest areas, Carson listed the mile<lb />
distance run, pole vault and the distance<lb />
medley relay as the team's downfall in<lb />
the upcoming year.<lb />
Looking ahead, Coach Carson<lb />
predicts William and Mary, who has won<lb />
the conference championship for nine<lb />
consecutive years, will be East Carolina's<lb />
toughest rival in the Southern Con-<lb />
ference.<lb />
The indoor track team will be in its<lb />
first meet this weekend against VMI,<lb />
Appalachian, Richmond and Virginia.<lb />
Albrittain shines in state meet<lb />
CHAPEL HILLClare Albrittain pla-<lb />
ced at least sixth in five different events<lb />
as she led the way in a fifth-place finish<lb />
for East Carolina's swimmers at the<lb />
North Carolina Association for Intercol-<lb />
legiate Athletes for Women (NCAIAW)<lb />
swim meet here last weekend.<lb />
Ms. Albrittain was the brightest spot<lb />
on an ECU squad which beat only two<lb />
schools, Meredith and UNC-Greensboro,<lb />
in the seven team field. The host team of<lb />
women from UNC-Chapel Hill dominated<lb />
the meet.<lb />
The Carolina women were led by<lb />
Olympic swimmer Ann Marshall. Ms.<lb />
Marshall set a new AIAW mark in the<lb />
200-yard freestyle during the competition.<lb />
Ms. Albrittain, though, was the star<lb />
for ECU. She placed third in the 100<lb />
freestyle, fourth in the 200 individual<lb />
medley, fifth in both the 200 medley relay<lb />
and 50 freestyle, and sixth in the 100<lb />
individual medley.<lb />
Bev Osborn and Jeanette Inmann also<lb />
placed in the top ten for the Lady<lb />
Pirates. Ms. Osborn placed in the top ten<lb />
in three events and Ms. Inmann placed<lb />
there in two events.<lb />
Ms. Osborn was seventh in the 200<lb />
freestyle and eighth in the 100 butterfly<lb />
and the 500 freestyle. Ms. Inmann was<lb />
fourth in the 50 backstroke and eighth in<lb />
the 100 breast stroke.<lb />
The meet rounded out the competition<lb />
for the Pirates as a team this year.<lb />
Relays continued from paae 14.<lb />
The year looks very promising for this<lb />
Pirate team consisting of five freshman.<lb />
These swimmers, Dave Moodie, Keith<lb />
Wade, Joe Kushy, John Tudor, and<lb />
Stewart Mann, did well in the;r first<lb />
intercollegiate meet.<lb />
The Pirates' next meet is with<lb />
Appalachian State in Boone this<lb />
weekend.<lb />
