School of Music 'disappointed 'with SGA help<lb />
By SUSAN QUINN<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Performing organizations in the ECU<lb />
School of Music were appropriated $1.000<lb />
by the SGA Legislature January 14 From<lb />
this appropriation, $250 was granted<lb />
without conditions, the other $750 was to<lb />
be matched by an equal amount by the<lb />
Music School.<lb />
The $1.000 appropriated is a<lb />
considerable cut from the original request<lb />
on December 3 for $10.000$5.000 to be<lb />
used for scholarships and $5,000 to be<lb />
used for support of student performing<lb />
organizations.<lb />
This appropriation was probably one<lb />
of the most discussed and reviewed<lb />
appropriations that has been granted by<lb />
the legislature this year. On November 5,<lb />
Bobby Sullivan, representative for the<lb />
music students asked for the SGA's<lb />
Tax assist<lb />
is given<lb />
students<lb />
By BROWNIE WILSON<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Once again this year the Accounting<lb />
Society will be helping students and staff<lb />
members to complete their income tax<lb />
forms and answer any questions<lb />
concerning taxes.<lb />
For the second year, accounting<lb />
students will be lending this assistance<lb />
as a service project to the student body<lb />
and campus community. The project is<lb />
also valuable practical experience for the<lb />
Accounting Society.<lb />
"Our service is open to everyone on<lb />
campus for any reason, from answering a<lb />
question to completion of any income tax<lb />
form said Dave Englert. treasurer of the<lb />
Accounting Society.<lb />
According to Englert the project was<lb />
very successful last year both for the<lb />
students and staff members that took<lb />
advantage of the service.<lb />
"If things go smoothly this year we<lb />
hope to open a branch in the downtown<lb />
Greenville area to serve the townspeople<lb />
also next year, this would be a great asset<lb />
to the community said Englert.<lb />
"This is our service project to the<lb />
campus and student body, so we would<lb />
like anyone who needs assistance to<lb />
please use us in anyway possible stated<lb />
Englert.<lb />
Miss Gwen Potter, advisor of the<lb />
Accounting Society, made clear that this<lb />
was a student undertaking and that any<lb />
service rendered would be free of charge.<lb />
"All information will be held in<lb />
confidence also Englert went on.<lb />
The project started on February 1 and<lb />
will run until April 15 with a break over the<lb />
quarter.<lb />
The office will be in Room 305 of the<lb />
Wright Building on campus. The time will<lb />
be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m Monday<lb />
through Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to<lb />
12:00 noon on Saturday.<lb />
"We certainly hope everyone will use<lb />
said Englert. "because when they do<lb />
they not only help themselves, but they<lb />
help someone interested in accounting<lb />
support of the performing organizations<lb />
on campus.<lb />
On December 3. a bill was introduced<lb />
to the leg slature requesting that a tot<lb />
$1i 00 ' appropriated to support<lb />
stud' rt rn ii , organizations and<lb />
scholarship in the School of Music. Of<lb />
the total sum. $5,000 was to be matched<lb />
by the School of Music administration to<lb />
provide scholarships for music students.<lb />
The remaining $5,000 was to be used in<lb />
support of performing students organi-<lb />
zations, and to be allocated by the<lb />
Student Forum of the School of<lb />
Musk, This bill was sent to tl<lb />
iti i i ommittee to bed<lb />
 lui liei:<lb />
On December 10 when the appro;ri<lb />
ations committee met. 91 music students<lb />
were present but were asked to leave by<lb />
chairman Cindy Domme while the<lb />
mittee debated the bill. This proce-<lb />

DEAN EVERETT PITTMAN<lb />
Book thefts on campus<lb />
bring stiff penalties<lb />
By SUSAN SHERMAN<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The problem of book thefts on the<lb />
ECU campus is growing out of hand<lb />
according to Debbie Roe, chairwoman of<lb />
the ECU Honor Council.<lb />
Roe said that the Council usually<lb />
hears from two to four cases of book theft<lb />
each week. Most of the students brought<lb />
before the Council express the excuse, "I<lb />
didn't know it was stealing<lb />
The consequences for this type of<lb />
theft can be as stiff as three quarters<lb />
suspension from East Carolina according<lb />
to Roe. A first offense usually draws a<lb />
suspended suspension. This simply<lb />
means that if the student is prosecuted<lb />
for book theft again, his suspension will<lb />
immediately be effective.<lb />
Roe also stated that many students<lb />
do not realize that any books found lying<lb />
around can be turned in to the bookstore<lb />
of "lost and found" in the CU. They then<lb />
can be returned to the rightful owner.<lb />
The bookstore will prosecute if they<lb />
suspect the book is being sold for extra<lb />
money. Many of these books do not even<lb />
have the real owner's name in them.<lb />
The Honor Council stressed that<lb />
sutdents should remain aware of the<lb />
consequences for their actions before<lb />
they try to sell any book they might have<lb />
found lying around campus.<lb />
During the committee meeting on<lb />
December 10 Dean Everett Pittman of the<lb />
Music School said "we need the money in<lb />
order to continue to give ECU a national<lb />
reputation. The SGA has supported the<lb />
ic school before and we want that<lb />
ng back We have a music school<lb />
of real distinction competing with schools<lb />
that are funded otherwise, the Appala-<lb />
chian State University music school is<lb />
granted $19,000 by their student<lb />
government and UNC-Greensboro music<lb />
school is granted $10,000 from their<lb />
student government<lb />
Legislator Eric Ripper felt tnat the<lb />
music school should go elsewhere to ask<lb />
for money and said "I can't see giving<lb />
them any money The bill was tabled<lb />
until the next week so that further<lb />
research could be made about area<lb />
expenses that might possibly be cut.<lb />
The appropriations committee met<lb />
again on January 7 with music student<lb />
representative Bobby Sullivan and Dean<lb />
Pittman. Domme said that $5,000<lb />
for scholarships had been decided as<lb />
unfavorably by the committee and so the<lb />
remaining $5,000 for performing organi-<lb />
zations was a sum that had to be<lb />
cut. Ripper said that he was still against<lb />
giving the music school any money<lb />
because he felt that they could raise the<lb />
money or get it elsewhere.<lb />
Dean Pittman replied, "We recruit<lb />
musicians just as football players are<lb />
recruited and if we don't get out on tours<lb />
with our best performers where other<lb />
students can see them, then we don't get<lb />
the best musicians interested in out<lb />
school<lb />
The bill was tabled again until January<lb />
14. At this meeting it was decided that<lb />
$1,000 would be appropriated instead of<lb />
$5,000. An estimated 30 music students<lb />
attended this meeting and were almost<lb />
once again asked to leave. After the<lb />
students were finally allowed to stay in<lb />
the open meeting, Jim Honeycutt said<lb />
that he felt that the committee had wasted<lb />
a lot of time. "I don't mind giving money<lb />
for performances here on campus but I do<lb />
mind giving money for off-campus<lb />
performances he added.<lb />
Bill Beckner proposed that $1,000 be<lb />
granted to be matched by $1,000. A<lb />
friendly amendment was made that<lb />
guaranteed $250 and stating that only<lb />
$750 be matched. The committee also<lb />
inserted the stipulation that the money<lb />
should be used on campus and not on<lb />
tours as originally planned.<lb />
Approximately 45 music students<lb />
attended the legislature meeting January<lb />
14 and waited for the final decision to be<lb />
made on the appropriation. After 30<lb />
minutes of debate the $1,000 was<lb />
appropriated with the stipulations that the<lb />

Summer school sessions<lb />
'will be different' this year<lb />
By BROWNIE WILSON<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
To a number of East Carolina students<lb />
this year's summer school sessions will<lb />
be quite different from those experienced<lb />
in the past.<lb />
The difference will be the introduction<lb />
of two special four week sessions in<lb />
addition to the regular five and half week<lb />
programs. These four week sessions will<lb />
be overlapped by the usual sessions.<lb />
However, the new four week programs will<lb />
not apply to all students.<lb />
According to Dr. Susan J. McDaniel,<lb />
assistant provost, the sessions were<lb />
added to help public school teachers<lb />
working towards another degree or<lb />
re-certification in their field.<lb />
"Many teachers sign contracts for ten<lb />
months and are unable to attend the first<lb />
and last of the five and a half week<lb />
sessions said Dr McDaniel.<lb />
"The new four week program will allow<lb />
them to gain the same number of credit<lb />
hours in a shorter time, but the daily<lb />
classes will meet for a longer period of<lb />
the day she pointed out.<lb />
Dr. McDaniel went on to add that the<lb />
shortened courses would be mostly<lb />
education and methods courses.<lb />
Another change for summer school<lb />
will be in the Department of Speech<lb />
Pathology and Audiology. The depart-<lb />
ment will have one single eight week<lb />
session that will overlap the two four<lb />
week sessions.<lb />
"The amount of credit hours will total<lb />
15 instead of the usual twenty hours that<lb />
can be earned in the two five and a half<lb />
week sessions said Dr. McDaniel.<lb />
In an important change from the past<lb />
the Faculty Senate voted to have<lb />
no Saturday classes this summer. How-<lb />
ever, the student will still spend the same<lb />
amount of time in the classroom.<lb />
"During the week classes will meet a<lb />
little longer to make up for the time<lb />
missed by not having classes on<lb />
Saturday said Dr McDaniel<lb />

A rock hound<lb />
Parks: 'stones keep him happy'<lb />
By ELLERBE WILLIAMS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
What could a person do with 14<lb />
bushels of rocks7 Become a rock hound,<lb />
of course. At least that is what Dr Oral<lb />
Parks, political science professor at East<lb />
Carolina, did<lb />
Parks' wife inherited the rocks in 1953<lb />
from her father, who was a personal friend<lb />
of the men who discovered the Wyoming<lb />
jade fields He helped haul the jade for<lb />
the men and ultimately vound up with<lb />
quite a bit of the green rock himself,<lb />
which he passed on to n s daughter.<lb />
Rock collecting is a apidly increasing<lb />
nobby in the United States and has grown<lb />
in the last ten or fifteen years from 25,000<lb />
participants to between six and seven<lb />
million collectors.<lb />
Rock hounds may be divided into three<lb />
oasic groups, said Parks. Mineral hounds<lb />
collect rocks in their raw form and do not<lb />
cut or polish the stones. Hard-rock<lb />
hounds collect semi-precious gem stones<lb />
which they cut and polish to a smooth<lb />
finish. Gem stone collectors use such<lb />
stones as -ubies and sapphires which<lb />
they cut or facit into planes and<lb />
angles Gem stones allow light to reflect<lb />
through them whereas semi-precious<lb />
stones do not<lb />
There are approximately 17,000<lb />
-rent varieties of minerals and it is<lb />
necessary for a hound to specialize in a<lb />
certain type of stone. Parks is interested<lb />
in the hard-rock group, and is particularly<lb />
partial to Brazillian agate. "The agate is<lb />
ess expensive than many other stones<lb />
and is one of the most beautiful Parks<lb />
said<lb />
Parks uses the agate, which he buys<lb />
the pound, to make items such as<lb />
pookends. paperweights and . pendents.<lb />
He also uses jade and petrified wood but<lb />
fers agate because of its unique<lb />
at n Each piece is different but is<lb />
rally brown with steaks of red and<lb />
running through<lb />
Parks usually takes two trips yearly<lb />
across the United btates in search of<lb />
rocks. These trips concentrate primarily<lb />
on the western states where greater<lb />
supplies of rocks are found. Last year<lb />
Parks covered 8,300 miles and 17 states in<lb />
his search for rocks, but he pointed out<lb />
that North Carolina is also a good place to<lb />
hunt. "We have the most varied selection<lb />
of minerals here in North Carolina of all<lb />
the states. Unfortunately the eastern part<lb />
has nothing, but from the piedmont west,<lb />
we have over 3.300 different kindsinclud-<lb />
ing diamonds<lb />
' Commerci-11 mines are very popular<lb />
among rock t jnds. The collector buys<lb />
bock of muc which have already been<lb />
dug Tid c arches through it for<lb />
stones. The fee for these mines is about<lb />
$3 plus a dollar for five buckets of<lb />
mud. The buckets hold about a<lb />
gallon. Parks finds the commercial mines<lb />
a good source and the time and effort of<lb />
digging is also eliminated.<lb />
Parks is in the process of establishing<lb />
a rock hound club in Greenville. About<lb />
$600 would be needed to buy equipment<lb />
needed for cutting and polishing. A<lb />
diamond saw is used to cut the stones<lb />
into slabs The blade of this saw is<lb />
circular and is .04 inches in<lb />
width. Instead of teeth, the blade is split<lb />
and filled with diamond dust.<lb />
Parks owns a 12 inch bla hich sells<lb />
for around $33 wholesale, but sizes go up<lb />
to 36 inches which sell for $500. Parks<lb />
feels that a 16 inch blade would be<lb />
sufficient for the club. A trim saw is used<lb />
for finer cutting and grinding wheels are<lb />
used for the final polishing.<lb />
An attempt was made last year to<lb />
establish a lapidary course, the art of<lb />
cutting and polishing stones, at Pitt<lb />
County Technical Institute. Although<lb />
student response was favorable the<lb />
course had to be abandoned because no<lb />
one was available to teach it. Parks is<lb />
hopeful, however, that the club could<lb />
have its own class. "There have been<lb />
several people who have told me they are<lb />
interested in a club. All I have to do is get<lb />
' 'H, . .<lb />

-I<lb />
ROCK HOUNDS are on the increase according to Dr. Oral Parks, who is an avid rock<lb />
collector.<lb />
everyone together Parks said.<lb />
In conjunction with his interest in<lb />
rocks Parks hopes to someday take a trip<lb />
school<lb />
to Brazil. The supply of good rocks is<lb />
more plentiful there than in any other<lb />
country. "Rocks are so plentiful down<lb />
there that you have to kick them out of the<lb />
way to find dirt Parks stated Until he<lb />
gets there, however, the United States<lb />
still has enough stones around to keep<lb />
him happy.<lb />
Continued from page three.<lb />
average of three or four thousand<lb />
students usually attended summer school<lb />
and that no change in attendance figures<lb />
was expected.<lb />
"We hope to have a bulletin out within<lb />
the next couple of weeks giving complete<lb />
nformation concerning summer school<lb />

On The Road To Freedom<lb />

Staff Writer<lb />
ON THE ROAD TO FREEDOM<lb />
Alvin Lee and Mylon LeFevre<lb />
Columbia KC32729<lb />
After nearly seven years with Ten<lb />
Years After. Alvin Lee has broken out of<lb />
his stereo-type, and collaborated with<lb />
American gospel-folk-rock singer Mylon<lb />
LeFevre. on a refreshing new album.<lb />
Complete with all the trimmings of a<lb />
super star session. including the<lb />
assistance of Stevie Winwood. Jim<lb />
Capaldi and Rebop of Traffic, Ron Wood<lb />
of the Faces. Mike Fleetwood of<lb />
Fleet wood Mac. George Harrison, and<lb />
Mike Patto of Patto. Also included are<lb />
one song written by a thinly disguised<lb />
Han Georgeson. entitled "So Sad (no love<lb />
of his own) and one by Ron Wood, a<lb />
rocker called "Let 'Em Say What They<lb />
Will" with the rest of tne songs split<lb />
between and among Lee and LeFevre.<lb />
One unusual and outstandir aspect<lb />
of this album is Alvm Lee's noticeable<lb />
attempt at humbling himself, especially<lb />
when compared to his complete control,<lb />
of the limelight in Ten Years After. Even<lb />
though he wrote four of the songs<lb />
himself, and three in collaboration with<lb />
LeFevre. he only sings one, the title song,<lb />
by himself On the rest he lets LeFevre<lb />
take the vocal spotlight, and concerns<lb />
himself with the arrangements and<lb />
productions. An unexpected side effect<lb />
which comes from this is the aura of good<lb />
feelings which this album exudes. It is as<lb />
if Alvm Lee is so happy doing something<lb />
different that this affects everyone else<lb />
involved with the album. Mylon LeFevre<lb />
seems to be pleased with the attention<lb />
being shown him by these giants of the<lb />
business without lettinq it qo to his head.<lb />
This is not a high energy album at all.<lb />
with only three of the twelve songs which<lb />
can be considered "rocking It is,<lb />
however, a subtle, gentle pleasing album<lb />

medium tempo numbers. "The World is<lb />
Changing" and "Fallen Angel" and the<lb />
fast 34 title song, together with the<lb />
rockers, "Let 'Em Say What They Will"<lb />
and "Rocking til the Sun Goes Down" all<lb />
combine in a well balanced manner. Also<lb />
included inside the cover are the lyrics to<lb />
9 of the songs, some of which are really<lb />
nice.<lb />
The strong point of this album lies in<lb />
the quiet strength which is evident in<lb />
many of the songs, and in the gentle<lb />
maturity displayed by the performers<lb />
themselves. Mylon LeFevre seems quite<lb />

'The Way We Were A Real Love Story<lb />
Friday night. I sauntered in to see<lb />
what I was sure was another tear-jerking,<lb />
strictly sickly sentimental, boy-meets-girl-<lb />
fall-m-and-then-out-of-love sort of story.<lb />
Two hours later. I stumbled out, dazzled,<lb />
pemiexed. moved, to join the ever-<lb />
growing bandwagon who are hailing "The<lb />
Way We Were" as one of THE Movies of<lb />
The Year.<lb />
Barbara Streisand, portraying the<lb />
deadly serious, ambitious, politically<lb />
involved Jewish girl, and Robert Redford<lb />
as the independent, physical, talented<lb />
young writer, are both fantastically<lb />
believable, tangible. Indeed, they make<lb />
the movie. Streisand, in this movie, is<lb />
one of the most beautiful women to be so<lb />
ugly that I have ever seen. As she.<lb />
herself, says to Redford: "I know I'm<lb />
attractive-sort of Streisand's great<lb />
appeal lies in her vitality, her love affair<lb />
with life (at one point in the movie she<lb />
holds eleven different jobs at once), and<lb />
her unswerving, blind love for and loyalty<lb />
to Redford. Streisand is magnificent.<lb />
pitiful, and almost embarrassingly moving<lb />
in her attempts to snare the man she<lb />
desperately wants.<lb />
Redford, recently proclaimed by<lb />
Newsweek to be "the logical successor to<lb />
Marlon Brando and Paul Newman as the<lb />
most charismatic American male presence<lb />
on the screen today" penetrates the movie<lb />
with his presence. Utilmately, he<lb />
dominates the movie as he does the<lb />
impressionable Streisand But rightly<lb />
so. Redford has a style of acting that is<lb />
best explained by the director of "The<lb />
Way We Were Sydney Pollack. He said<lb />
of Redford's work "It's very uncerebral.<lb />
unacademic. purely gut level " Comment-<lb />
ing on Redford's performance as a<lb />
budding young author in the movie whose<lb />
work has for the first time been read out<lb />
loud in class. Pollack analyzes "Bob's<lb />
(Redford's) face conveyed a superb<lb />
combination of emotions He was<lb />
embarrassed, and full of pride, and young<lb />
and wanting to cry and not wanting to cry<lb />
at the same time I agree Redford uses<lb />
restraint in his work, yet he is powerfully<lb />
potent<lb />
Nostalgia is on the boom with today's<lb />
movie-goers, and so the 40s and 50s<lb />
setting of this movie is thus lucrative I,<lb />
for one. find a sort of fascination with the<lb />
war days when patriotism was at a fever<lb />
level (exemplified beautifully by Streisand<lb />
in her role), and FDR was the idol of<lb />
all. The McCarthy witch hunt for<lb />
"Commies" is also examined, as a<lb />
Hollywood writer Redford is under<lb />
investigation, and the movie throws out<lb />
some serious indictment of the American<lb />
system.<lb />
Basically, however. Streisand and<lb />
Redford's movie is a painfully accurate<lb />
story of two people who love the hell out<lb />
of each other, but have different values,<lb />
perspectives. and opinic is which<lb />
ultimately drive them apart. Love does<lb />
not conquer all. opposites may attract but<lb />
shouldn't marry, and babies will not help<lb />
a sinking man age For once, someone<lb />

that Mr. Ertis' attempt to safeguard student funds was correct. Further, Fountainhead<lb />
feels that Mr. Bodenhamer's absurd and questionable actions have made him<lb />
inoperative, and we invite someone, anyone, to inject sense into the SGA. Mr. Ertis<lb />
has. at least, tried.<lb />

NATO troubled<lb />
By BARRY GOLDWATER<lb />
Our friends in Europe are deeply<lb />
troubled, and with good reason.<lb />
Rapidly moving developments have<lb />
suddenly rendered the NATO alliance<lb />
seriously weakened.<lb />
Nations of Europe, dependent for their<lb />
military security upon an American<lb />
nuclear shield, worry about our new<lb />
relationship with the Soviet Union and a<lb />
policy of detente which is being<lb />
developed through two-way negotiations.<lb />
At the same time, Europe is dependent<lb />
economically upon Arabian oil, which has<lb />
suddenly become a political pawn used by<lb />
Middle East nations attempting to<lb />
mobilize outside nations against Israel.<lb />
Whether we like it or not, the United<lb />
States is a long way from the time when<lb />
Europe's troubles will not be our<lb />
troubles. At a time when the Soviet Union<lb />
is building its military forces in all areas,<lb />
NATA finds itself distressed on two<lb />
important counts: Soviet nuclear wea-<lb />
pons are more numerous than our own<lb />
and her navy is rapidly becoming one of<lb />
the largest in the world-extending armed<lb />
might into every strategic waterway of the<lb />
world.<lb />
Our allies in Western Europe also<lb />
understand that the Soviet Union has<lb />
enormous manpower and conventional<lb />
weapons available for use in Europe<lb />
should the leaders of the Kremlin decide<lb />
on aggressive action. They take some<lb />
comfort, as do officials in the United<lb />
States, from the belief that the Soviet<lb />
Union is presently too concerned with the<lb />
threat posed by an increasingly powerful<lb />
China to risk committing any large<lb />
amounts of its conventional strength in an<lb />
aggressive move toward Western Europe.<lb />
Regardless, our NATO allies have to<lb />
wonder what kind of detente we are<lb />
negotiating with the Soviet Union when<lb />
the Russians are obviously bent on<lb />
surpassing the United States in all areas<lb />
of military might. They also have to be<lb />
concerned with the second round of the<lb />
Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT-II)<lb />
which began last year in Geneva,<lb />
Switzerland. The talks involve negoti-<lb />
ations between the United States and the<lb />
Soviet Union on ways and means of<lb />
restricting the kinds and numbers of<lb />
offensive strategic neclear weapons. For<lb />
our part, the concern will be over what<lb />
kinds of quantities of weapons the United<lb />
States would need to deter the Sovier<lb />
Union from launching an all-out nuclear<lb />
war.<lb />
Secretary of Defense James R.<lb />
Schlesinger has already indicated what<lb />
the Pentagon's attitude is on this<lb />
question. He has issued a blunt appeal<lb />
for the development by the United States<lb />
of new and better strategic weapons<lb />
systems. His recommendation counter-<lb />
acts to some degree the position of<lb />
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who<lb />
continues to argue for negotiations based<lb />
on an assumption of mutual interest<lb />
rather than new arms. However, even<lb />
Secretary Kissinger is now admitting that<lb />
the United States has fallen behind as the<lb />
Russians push ahead with building up<lb />
their nuclear arsenal.<lb />
The irony in this siutation is the fact<lb />
that most of the developments which are<lb />
bothering our friends in Europe took place<lb />
during 1973, which the Nixon Adminis-<lb />
tration had designated as "the year of<lb />
Europe but which actually turned out to<lb />
be "the year of the Middle East<lb />
WORLD WAR III<lb />
Some thoughtful military and<lb />
economic Washington experts are<lb />
beginning to believe that the nations of<lb />
the globe are, at this moment, closer to<lb />
World War III than at any time since the<lb />
Axis was defeated.<lb />
The cause of this peril is, of coursefl<lb />
the worldwide energy crisis. The factors,<lb />
both international and domestic, now<lb />
coming to light make it plain that the<lb />
conference on Feb. 11 in Washington of<lb />
oil consuming nations may just turn out<lb />
to be "the last best hope on earth<lb />
Unless the leaders of the affected<lb />
nations develop a program of co-operation<lb />
reaching around the entire world, massive<lb />
industrial and economic dislocations will<lb />
occur and perhaps move some nations to<lb />
drastic remedies.<lb />
Official Washington has just begun to<lb />
absorb the awful truth about what the<lb />
Arab oil producers can do to Europe,<lb />
Japan and the United States if they<lb />
continue to use their oil supplies for<lb />
international political purposes. From the<lb />
actions already taken or talked about, it is<lb />
possible to see a financial crisis<lb />
developing that could destroy the<lb />
economy of the entire Western World.<lb />
In fact, the Arab nations which contain<lb />
only a tiny proportion of the world's<lb />
population hold a powerful monopoly.<lb />
Some of the price rises talked about in<lb />
producing areas such as Kuwait and<lb />
Saudi Arabia could siphon off most of the<lb />
world's currency. They could load Swiss<lb />
bank accounts maintained by members of<lb />
the Arab oil countries will billions of<lb />
dollars while depression, massive<lb />
unemployment, and widespread suffering<lb />
swept over areas which are presently<lb />
dependent upon the Arab nations for the<lb />
energy to turn their wheels, heat their<lb />
home and run their industry. Many<lb />
military men and economists cannot<lb />
visualize a situation in which Europe and<lb />
Japan would meekly submit to economic<lb />
choas and destruction? As one observer<lb />
commented, "The Arabs have oil, but<lb />
don't forget France, Britain and the United<lb />
States have the nuclear bomb<lb />
The danger of World War III is<lb />
astounding in a number of respects. The<lb />
cause of the peril is so irksome and so<lb />
personal to all individuals that the world's<lb />
population hasn't yet tumbled to the<lb />
gravity of what is taking place. Quite<lb />
understandably, people are more worried<lb />
about how to get gasoline, stay warm and<lb />
keep their jobs than to do more than<lb />
engage in a bitter and furile attempt to<lb />
place the bla.ne for th shortage. They<lb />
don't yet see the Arab oil embargo,<lb />
compounded by price increases and<lb />
political demands involving Israel, for<lb />
what it is-the international match which<lb />
could tough off a conflagration.<lb />
As the winter progresses and the crisis<lb />
deepens, more and more is being heard<lb />
about what some writers refer to as "the<lb />
unthinkable solution<lb />
What they mean is a solution based on<lb />
force; on the assumption that before they<lb />
submit to wrecking their economies, their<lb />
political systems, their positions in the<lb />
world, the countries that desperately need<lb />
oil will resort to military power to take it<lb />
away from the Arabs.<lb />

White Ball<lb />
To Fountain head:<lb />
I must be coming up in the world! I<lb />
know of no other time when a letter to the<lb />
editor received a rebuttal in a "news"<lb />
story. My letter concerning the APO's<lb />
White Ball did just this.<lb />
There are, however, a few things that<lb />
need to be said. First, due to the fact that<lb />
the last paragraph of my letter was not<lb />
printed, some misunderstanding has<lb />
arisen. My mention of a young lady<lb />
receiving a one hundred dollar bill was<lb />
meant only to show that large sums of<lb />
money were involved. This was a minor<lb />
point. My last paragraph (the one not<lb />
there) made the major point - that groups<lb />
and individuals who contribute to White<lb />
Ball have a right to be reasonably assured<lb />
that the money they contribute will indeed<lb />
go to a worthy cause. The APO's<lb />
assertion that an "outsider" who oversaw<lb />
the counting could lead to a leak in the<lb />
individual totals does not alter this fact.<lb />
Now we come to point two. This year<lb />
the counting of the contributions was<lb />
witnessed by a Superior Court<lb />
Judge. Well, maybe my letter did some<lb />
good, for now those groups and<lb />
individuals who contributed are reason-<lb />
ably assured that the counting was on the<lb />
level (of course we still don't know what<lb />
happened to those containers of coins<lb />
and paper before they were handed to that<lb />
judge).<lb />
Now point number three slaps us in<lb />
the face. We find out that a "mere"<lb />
$337.28 was used to buy flowers and<lb />
finance a party. So, all that money which<lb />
was collected for a worthy cause did, in<lb />
fact. NOT go to that cause. They had a<lb />
party! I hope that those groups and<lb />
individuals who contributed and were not<lb />
allowed to attend said party aren't too<lb />
upset - they might not contribute next<lb />
year. I wonder what the members of a<lb />
group who contributed, say, only about<lb />
$300 are thinking today, realizing that<lb />
their money went to the financing of a<lb />
party and not to the Easter Seals<lb />
Association. No wonder White Ball has<lb />
been such a hush-hush affair in the past.<lb />
Indeed, I am glad that my letter to the<lb />
editor was rebutted in a "news"<lb />
story. Now we know what goes on. And<lb />
this is not meant to imply that I am<lb />
against fund raising for worthy<lb />
causes. However, I do have some<lb />
suggestions for the APO's. If they are<lb />
concerned with collecting money for a<lb />
worthy cause and not for a party why<lb />
don't they collect it in locked boxes that<lb />
only a Superior Court judge has the key<lb />
for. Why don't they give ALL the money<lb />
to that cause and finance the plaque, the<lb />
roses and the party out of their own<lb />
pockets. That would show that they,<lb />
indeed, are concerned with the cause and<lb />
not the money.<lb />
Finally, (and this is my last<lb />
paragraph), it those that contributed are<lb />
really concerned with the cause and not<lb />
with being the winner of a non-contest,<lb />
why don't they just eliminate the<lb />
middleman and give the money director to<lb />
the Easter Seals Association. One more<lb />
thing I wonder how many of those<lb />
crippled children who could have<lb />
benefited from that $337.28 were invited<lb />
to the party.<lb />

About dorm<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb /><lb />
Dear Unfortunate Companions:<lb />
(Actually this letter has no real<lb />
objective other than letting out steam.) I<lb />
am an upperclassman-type person who is<lb />
currently living in a freshman dorm due<lb />
solely to convenience of location, size of<lb />
rooms and a sink. I cannot name the<lb />
dorm, but I trust the girls will recognize<lb />
me. This particular dormitory has a<lb />
currently fashionable problem, that of a<lb />
fanatical dorm administrator. At th is<lb />
point, I can't decide which is worse .and<lb />
administrator that "administers" with an<lb />
overzealousness leading to unpopularity<lb />
with the girls, or one that abuses<lb />
confidences, slanders, is sometimes an<lb />
obnoxious drunk and plays favoritism to<lb />
an unbelievable extent. Some choice,<lb />
huh?<lb />
I know this letter sounds one-sided<lb />
but for once I would like to be heard<lb />
without having to put up with a lot of<lb />
sweet-talking and lies from either our<lb />
president (who is a worm) or tne<lb />
administrator herslef (who is chief slug).<lb />
Something ought to be done about the<lb />
problems we seem to have, but if y'all<lb />
understood what the girls in here are up<lb />
against, you would understand why there<lb />
is absolutely no one-believe me, we've<lb />
checked - NO ONE who could help us<lb />
work them out. But anyway, this is our<lb />
suggestion: a survey given to all<lb />
dormitory residents pertaining to the<lb />
reliability and ability of the dorm<lb />
administrator to carry out her obligations<lb />
to the girls and the staff. This survey<lb />
would call not only for ratings of the<lb />
performance of duties but also would ask<lb />
for comments on general attitudes and<lb />
suggestions for improvement. Then with<lb />
these firmly in hand, maybe somebody<lb />
would wake up and realize that these<lb />
people should be replaced .or moved to<lb />
a location less harmful to one's health.<lb />
If this same crap just goes on and on<lb />
like it has tor two solid years now, uoa<lb />
knows I and my fellow inmates pity the<lb />
poor girls who will be assigned here to<lb />
live under this kindly humane soul that<lb />
runs everything and everybody - including<lb />
d.f. - once she knows what she can get<lb />
away with.<lb />
Thanks,<lb />

"how indefinite adjectives lead to<lb />
imprecision of language then he should<lb />

Mr. Mentha would then begin to<lb />

Bike reply<lb />
John Schofield<lb />
City Planner<lb />
Greenville, N.C. 27834<lb />
Dear Mr. Schofield:<lb />
The article contained in the Janua.y<lb />
24th issue of the Fountainhead entitled<lb />
"Bicycle Paths Are Planned Here" has<lb />
raised several questions.<lb />
I would like to take this opportunity to<lb />
clarify a couple of points concerning the<lb />
article. A reference made to a joint effort<lb />
on behalf of the Student Government with<lb />
the city of Greenville, in fact any other<lb />
organization, in planning a bike path<lb />
system was a misunderstanding.<lb />
The fact is, any plans which I am<lb />
associated with only concerns on-campus<lb />
bike paths. I do hope however, that a<lb />
cooperative effort with the city of<lb />
Greenville in a joing on-campus and<lb />
off-campus bike trail system can be<lb />
achieved.<lb />
The second point I would like to clarify<lb />
concerns cost. The approximate cost of<lb />
$75,000 to $100,000 for the construction<lb />
of bike paths on and off-campus was only<lb />
a rough estimate and was meant to be<lb />
only that.<lb />
In closing, I would like to say we are<lb />
and will continue to move forward in<lb />
establishing a bike path system for East<lb />
Carolina University.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Bill Bodenhamer<lb />
President, SGA<lb />
Basketball<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
I know I am not the only one who has<lb />
this following complaint concerning the<lb />
atrocious calibre of officiating in the<lb />
Men's Intramural Basketball Program. I<lb />
am certain I have the support of the<lb />
majority of the participants.<lb />
First, I would like to compliment the<lb />
fine job of the Director of Intramurals in<lb />
securing very competent officials for this<lb />
past fall's Intramural Football league.<lb />
They were really great and appeared to<lb />
have their stuff together, but the officials<lb />
in the basketball program are exactly the<lb />
opposite. I'll admit there are a few who<lb />
really know how to officiate a game, but<lb />
for the most part, the others are not<lb />
worthy of calling a "bush league"<lb />
game. These obviously have not been<lb />
associated with the game for long, and all<lb />
they know is what they see on the NBA<lb />
game of the week, which they probably<lb />
watch only once a month anyhow. I<lb />
realize the referees hace a hard job and<lb />
catch a lot of back-talk and lip, but there<lb />
never has been a ref that did not. Most of<lb />
it comes as a result of lousy calls<lb />
anyhow. Why can't the Director under-<lb />
stand that a lot of us take a lot of pride<lb />
and seriousness in our little intramural<lb />
games the same way Danny Kepley takes<lb />
his linebacking position serious when he<lb />
dons the purple and gold on fall Saturday<lb />
afternoon in Ficklen Stadium. You may<lb />
think that it's "just a game" and we are<lb />
stupid for taking it serious, but like I said<lb />
a lot us take pride in it. But there is no<lb />
way we can take pride in a game that<lb />
incompetent officials turn into a big joke.<lb />
I think the Director should review the<lb />
criteria involved in selecting basketball<lb />
officials in the future. Why let this ruin an<lb />
otherwise excellent and praise-worthy job<lb />
done by the Director of Mens Intramurals.<lb />

"Historical Controversies of the<lb />
Seventeenth Century" will be discussed<lb />
by William H. Cobb of the ECU history<lb />
faculty at the Wed Feb. 6 meeting of<lb />
Phi Sigma lota, the ECU Romance<lb />
Languages honor society.<lb />
The public is invited to attend the<lb />
meeting, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. in<lb />
room 201 of the Student Union.<lb />
Dr. Cobb's lecture will be a brief<lb />
critique of several of the major issues<lb />
among historians of the 17th century,<lb />
with emphasis on the political problems<lb />
of France and Spain at the time.<lb />
(CPS)The severe paper shortage, which<lb />
is putting the squeeze on many<lb />
newspapers across the country, has<lb />
stimulated backward response from<lb />
several major paper manufacturers-they<lb />
are dropping their recycles lines.<lb />
According to the International Institute<lb />
for Environmental Affairs, major paper<lb />
producers are quoted as saying recycled<lb />
paper "hasn't caught on" because large<lb />
buyers have found it just as expensive as<lb />
virgin paper.<lb />
In addition, the Institute reported<lb />
paper manufacturers are cutting back on<lb />
production of lighter, less expensive<lb />
stocks, because they can get more money<lb />
by selling only the heavier, more<lb />
ecologically wasteful varieties.<lb />

When asked later if he was satisfied<lb />
with the appropriations Dean Pittman<lb />
replied, "I was disappointed primarily<lb />
because in this state we're competing<lb />

Toastmasters come to Greenville<lb />
By GLENN HARGETT<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
Toastmasters, who claim to be able to<lb />
help anyone in oratory and leadership<lb />
abilities, have come to Greenville.<lb />
A group of local businessmen,<lb />
professors, and students are currently<lb />
forming a branch of the internationally<lb />
acclaimed group.<lb />
The Toastmasters prepare its members<lb />
for today's communication and leadership<lb />
demands. By using Toastmaster's pro-<lb />
grams the participants improve their<lb />
ability to say what they are thinking and<lb />
learn to think about what others are<lb />
saying.<lb />
Toastmasters learn to evaluate the<lb />
ideas of others and hear what they listen<lb />
(o. By working together the members<lb />
develop the ability to accept evaluation<lb />
Gets 'blanket' billing<lb />
and to give it. This ability hopefully will<lb />
carry over to his job and to his friends.<lb />
Together the Toastmasters learn to<lb />
prepare themselves for conducting and<lb />
participating in meetings. The group<lb />
attempts to obtain this by trying to<lb />
improve their use of humor, listening<lb />
abilities and their parlimentary procedure.<lb />
Members work to try to rid themselves<lb />
of the butterfly syndrome, that uneasy<lb />
feeling before one speaks.<lb />
In Greenville this group was begun<lb />
through the efforts of Chris Hay, a<lb />
present student at ECU. Hay was<lb />
formerly a member of Toastmasters in<lb />
another city. He felt that Toastmasters<lb />
iave "helped me a great deal<lb />
An organizational meeting was held<lb />
Jan. 23 with the results hopeful. The<lb />
group will be meeting next Feb. 5 at 7<lb />
p.m. at the Bonanza Sirloin Pit.<lb />
Hay adds that one can gain from the<lb />
"exchange of ideas" that exists when<lb />
such a diverse group comes together for<lb />
self-improvement.<lb />
Toe shortage?<lb />
(CPSZNS)-The small toe is disappearing<lb />
from the human race.<lb />
According to Dr. Phillip Tobias of the<lb />
University of Witwatersrand in South<lb />
Africa, people's small toes are slowly<lb />
growing smaller. He said this is<lb />
happening because shoes are cramping<lb />
human feet-and someday, in the<lb />
not-too-distant-future, small toes may be<lb />
gone forever.<lb />
Dr. Tobias reported small toes aren't<lb />
the only things being threatened, but<lb />
because the foods we eat are cooked and<lb />
soft, wisdom teeth are on the way out.<lb />

Bring-your-own-blanket that is. The<lb />
new Playhouse production of INDIANS<lb />
will openJriday, February the 8th at 8:15<lb />
in the Studio Theatre. This production<lb />
will have a unique staging and seating<lb />
arrangement: the action will surround the<lb />
audience and everyone will sit on a<lb />
padded carpet. The seating will make it<lb />
easier to follow the action of the<lb />
show. Everyone is invited to bring a<lb />
blanket for extra padding.<lb />
INDIANS promises to be an exciting<lb />
evening in the theatres. The show is a<lb />
great polemic about the American<lb />
penchant for war and violence, but it is<lb />
also a gaudy, noisy wild west show. The<lb />
real hero of INDIANS is Chief Sittina<lb />
Bill. His message delivered to Buffalo<lb />
Bill, is the dramatic representation of 19th<lb />
century land aggrandizers.<lb />
"You took from us by force what you<lb />
could have obtained by love. We didn't<lb />
need all that land and you didn't either<lb />
Donald Biehn is directing INDIANS<lb />
and Russell Chesson will play Sitting<lb />
Bill. Cody is played by Gregory Smith.<lb />
Students are urged to get their tickets<lb />
early. The seating area is small. To-make<lb />
more seats available the run of the show<lb />
will be extended form the 8th through the<lb />
20th, except Sundays. Tickets are on sale<lb />
at the Drama Department office and on<lb />
performance nights at the Studio Theatre<lb />
box office.<lb />

Election Reform<lb />
is a major issue<lb />
The question of "election reform"<lb />
promises to be a major issue in the<lb />
months ahead, with the possibility that<lb />
new laws governing financing of political<lb />
campaigns may be effective in time for<lb />
the 1974 elections.<lb />
Out of the Watergate mess have come<lb />
insistent demands for the mandatory use<lb />
of tax revenues doled out to political<lb />
candidates to finance federal election<lb />
campaigns. Ostensibly, evils and abuses<lb />
of private campaign funding would end.<lb />
This drastic plan is traveling under the<lb />
guise of "election reform<lb />
Thanks to U.S. Sen. James B. Allen of<lb />
Alabama and his recent filibuster, fina<lb />
action on such Treasury raids was put oft<lb />
until the current session of Congress.<lb />
Americans now will have a choice<lb />
between such new schemes and genuine<lb />
reform.<lb />
In the forefront of efforts to strengthen<lb />
present laws in order to eliminate abuses<lb />
such as revealed by Watergate is the<lb />
Chamber of Commerce of the United<lb />
States. After careful study of numerous<lb />
proposals, it favors these positive election<lb />
reform actions:<lb />
-Limitations on private contributions<lb />
to individual candidates, with identifi-<lb />
cation of contributors. (It believes $3,000<lb />
would be a 'reasonable' limitation.)<lb />
-Limitations on expenditures by<lb />
candidates.<lb />
-Reasonable tax deductions and<lb />
credits for contributions, in order to<lb />
encourage smaller contributors.<lb />
-Use of $1 and $2 contributions under<lb />
the tax checkoff laws, because it is<lb />
voluntary.<lb />
-Establishment of an independent<lb />
agency to enforce the new law.<lb />
-Requirement that contributions in<lb />
excess of $50 be by check.<lb />
-Strict identification of all contributors<lb />
of $100 or more.<lb />

To-Morrow's Sports<lb />
By JACK MORROW<lb />
Sports Editor<lb />
DID YOU REALLY MEAN IT, DOC?<lb />
For those of you who missed Channel Six's sports news a few Saturdays ago, I<lb />
shall brina you up to date on what happened.<lb />
Our illustrious Chancellor, Dr. Leo Jenkins, proposed on this program a new<lb />
athletic conference which would be called the Mid-Southern Conference. The schools<lb />
hesuggested to compose the conference were: East Carolina, William ancI Mary,<lb />
Richmond the University of South Carolina, West Virginia and any team in the Atlantic<lb />
Coast Conference which felt that the conference was overwhelming them.<lb />
This is a very sound proposal and a very good league should resul . The reason that<lb />
this idea came about is due mainly to the fact that Davidson College announced a<lb />
retrenching policy in football. The Wildcats have stopped scheduling the big powers in<lb />
the conference namely Richmond, William and Mary and East Carolina<lb />
Dr Jenkins feels that in order for a conference to be a conference, all schools mus<lb />
play one another if they have a team in that sport. By only choosing the schools that<lb />
thpv want to Dlav this only serves to weaken the conference.<lb />
MOr Jenkins continued in his interview, he was very much in favor of the Pirates<lb />
olavinq as many ACC teams as possible. However, the Chancellor did slip upon one<lb />
statement He stated that the East Carolina varsity swimmers swim only one ACC team<lb />
anc S the other teams in the ACC will not swim them. Dr. Jenkins let me ask you to<lb />
cheVk the 1973-74 swimming schedule where you will find that the East Carolina<lb />
swimming team competes against four ACC squads this year, namely: UNC N<lb />
State, Maryland and the University ofVirginia. No other sport on campus can make that<lb />
StaTh??ootball team played two ACC teams, basketball played two, soccer played<lb />
three N C State is the only ACC team with the intestinal fortitude to wrestle us, and of<lb />
course lacrosse and crew used to schedule as many ACC teams as possible until the<lb />
administration took their sport away from them.<lb />
Now fwou W seem thatif the Chancellor of our University is so "gung-ho" on our<lb />
becoming a member of the ACC "pie in the sky" program, that we would be promoting<lb />
ttese sports rather than disbanding them. Further, he would be suggesting and<lb />
allowinghe coaches involved in scheduling, that they do all possible to play ACC<lb />
teatSall starts at the top. The good executive passes his suggestions down to his<lb />
subordinates who in turn carry out his desires. Dr. Jenkins, since you have now been<lb />
SfSub kSJSon stating your views, I assume that you are passing these viewpoints<lb />
din though your staff, the athletic department and coaches involved to carry out your<lb />
washes As head of this University this is your prerogative, your job and your<lb />
responsibility to the students. <lb />
Allegheny College had a swimming meet scheduled with Kenyon College, which<lb />
had auite a few of their swimmers out with the 24-hour virus.<lb />
Thev recovered quickly enough, but coach Sam Freas did not want to subject his<lb />
sJrebuspiro Meadville, Pa. to Gambler, Ohio. St. I he did<lb />
not wt to clncelThe meet. The'result? The meet was held, even though both teams<lb />
reS worTeTout a deal with Kenyon coach Dick Sloan, and each team swamin their<lb />
own SS Times in each event were compared over the phone and Allegheny, virus and<lb />
aTvTI-iimes were not as fast as in head-to-head competition, even though<lb />
both teams had the home pool advantage.<lb />

Furman edges Pirates<lb />
By STEVE TOMPKINS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Pirate's basketball team continued<lb />
to play cliff-hangers, as two baskets<lb />
separated defeat from victory last week.<lb />
Wed. night Old Dominion, sixth<lb />
ranked in the APsmall college poll,<lb />
defeated the Pirates 80-78 and Saturday<lb />
afternoon Furman edged by 72-70.<lb />
On Wed. at Minges Coliseum the<lb />
Monarchs were able to win at the foul<lb />
line, as they hit 20 of 26 shots while the<lb />
Pirates only went to the foul line three<lb />
times in the entire game.<lb />
In contrast ECU outscored Old<lb />
Dominion by 16 points from the field.<lb />
The Pirates found themselves behind<lb />
for almost the entire second half, until<lb />
Donnie Owens led a late charge to bring<lb />
ECUback from a 17 point deficit.<lb />
Roger Atkinson opened the game with<lb />
a field goal, and scored the Pirate's first<lb />
six points.<lb />
The Pirates moved out to a lead of 16-8<lb />
on a basket by Larry Hunt. Hunt replaced<lb />
Nicky White who had a slight knee injury,<lb />
and did a fine job by contributing 12<lb />
points and 13 rebounds.<lb />
After Reggie Lee hit two straight<lb />
jumpers making the score 22-14, Old<lb />
Dominion changed gears and dominated<lb />
the rest of the half.<lb />
Joel Copeland, the leading scorer in<lb />
the game for the Monarchs with 24 points,<lb />
scored on a three point play and after a<lb />
Pirate basket led the Monarchs' to 13<lb />
straight points.<lb />
Jay Roundtree of Old Dominion hit<lb />
two straight jumpers to make the lead<lb />
40-26, and the Pirates found themselves<lb />
down 48-34 at halftime.<lb />
The Monarchs continued their<lb />
rampage in the second half, as they<lb />
extended their lead to 19 points at 63-44<lb />
and appeared to be running the Bucs out<lb />
of the gym.<lb />
Owens wasn't quite a believer yet and<lb />
hit a long jumper, the first of his eight<lb />
straight baskets from long range.<lb />
Using a pressing defense the Pirates<lb />
forced the Monarchs into numerous<lb />
turnovers until Hunt hit a basket trimming<lb />
the lead to one at 77-76 with 2:08<lb />
remaining.<lb />
The Pirates couldn't put the added<lb />
touch into their effort as they turned the<lb />
ball over once and missed on another<lb />
opportunity to take the lead.<lb />
For ECU Owens led the scoring with<lb />
20 points, followed by Atkinson with 16,<lb />
and Lee, Hunt and Robert Geter with 12<lb />
Saturday afternoon on regional<lb />
television against Furman the Pirates<lb />
dominated the game but lost making their<lb />
overall record 9-9 and their conference<lb />
record to 5-4 for a third place standing.<lb />
Leading the entire game until four<lb />
minutes into the second half, the Bucs<lb />
lost due to 20 turnovers compared to<lb />
Furman's nine and the presence of 71"<lb />
Fessor Leonard.<lb />
Leonard, reinstated after a short<lb />
disciplinary period invoked by Coach Joe<lb />
Williams, came into the game midway<lb />
through the first half and rallied the<lb />
Paladins from a 23-12 deficit.<lb />
The Pirates, with White and Geter<lb />
dominating the defensive boards, jumped<lb />
out into an eight point lead before the<lb />
"Moose" appeared.<lb />
Leonard continually stopped ECU from<lb />
breaking the game open. Combining with<lb />
freshman Bruce Grimm's long range<lb />
jumpers Leonard brought the Paladins<lb />
back to within one at 38-37 at halftime.<lb />
The lead exchanged hands in the<lb />
second half until Reggie Lee put ECU into<lb />
its final lead with a baseline<lb />
jumper. Seconds later Furman's Clyde<lb />
Mayes tapped in a missed shot giving<lb />
Furman the lead for good with 16 minutes<lb />
remaining.<lb />
The Pirates didn't quit and stayed<lb />
close all the way.<lb />
The turning point in the game seemed<lb />
to come when Leonard smashed Owens<lb />
sending him sprawling and the ball out of<lb />
bounds. No foul was called and Furman<lb />
took possession. Leonard then hit a<lb />
decisive turn-around jumper for the<lb />
paladins giving them a 72-68 lead.<lb />
The Bucs still weren't through though<lb />
as Owens hit two foul shots and the<lb />
Pirates stole the ball. A last second shot<lb />
by Owens failed and Furman enhanced its<lb />
first place in the conference with a 7-1<lb />
record.<lb />
Nicky White led the Pirate scoring with<lb />
18 points, followed by Geter and Lee with<lb />
12 each and Atkinson and Owens with 10<lb />
apiece.<lb />
The Pirates return home Wed. night to<lb />
face Buffalo State University at 8:00 in<lb />
Minges Coliseum.<lb />
MINGES NATATORIUM will be the site of the nineteenth annual Atlantic Seaboard<lb />
Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet begins Saturday<lb />

Swimmers gain two big victories<lb />
Coach Ray Scharf's varsity swimmers<lb />
really put it all together this past weekend<lb />
as they travelled to Virginia. The Pirates<lb />
swamped Richmond University, 70-42 on<lb />
Friday afternoon, and then on Saturday<lb />
the tankers came through in many a<lb />
clutch situation to defeat the University of<lb />
Virginia, 65-48.<lb />
East Carolina won 9 of 13 events<lb />
against Richmond, who was considered<lb />
o be one of the top contenders for the<lb />
Pirates' Southern Conference crown.<lb />
Even though Scharf experimented by<lb />
swimming a few swimmers in events<lb />
which they have not been accustomed to,<lb />
the margin of victory was still quite<lb />
Paul Schiffel and Ross Bohlken carried<lb />
the flag for the Bucs as they were both<lb />
double winners. Schiffel captured the<lb />
200-yard individual medley and the<lb />
200-yard butterfly event, while Bohlken<lb />
was victorious in the 50 and the 500-yard<lb />
freestyle events.<lb />
Other East Carolina first place<lb />
finishers were turned in by the 400-yard<lb />
medley relay (Ron Hughes, Charlie Kemp,<lb />
Mike Bretting and Steve Ruedlinger), Jim<lb />
Hadley won the 100-yard freestyle, Greg<lb />
Hinchman captured the 100-yard back-<lb />
stroke event, Kemp was a winner in the<lb />
200-yard breastroke and Jack Morrow<lb />
easily captured three-meter diving<lb />
competition.<lb />
The Spiders were a much improved<lb />
team from last year, but East Carolina's<lb />
depth and experience was too much to<lb />
contend with.<lb />
Against the University of Virginia a<lb />
packed house at University Hall<lb />
Natatorium and an upset-minded band of<lb />
Cavaliers awaited the Pirate tankers. East<lb />
Carolina responded by turning in their<lb />
finest performance of the season to down<lb />
the Wahoos.<lb />
A happy Ray Scharf called the<lb />
contest, "An exciting meet all the way<lb />
through and he had loads of praise for<lb />
his squad.<lb />
Jack Morrow and Ross Bohlken were<lb />
double winners for East Carolina. Bohl-<lb />
ken was victorious in the 100 and 200-yard<lb />
freestyle events and Morrow was<lb />
triumphant in both the one and the<lb />
three-meter diving events.<lb />
The Pirates' 400-yard medley relay<lb />
(Hinchman, Kemp, Bretting and Rued-<lb />
linger) led the meet off in thrilling fashion<lb />
as they were given first place on a judge's<lb />
decision over the Cavaliers.<lb />
Paul Schiffel and Larry Green swam<lb />
tremendous races to finish second and<lb />
third in the 1000-yard freestyle event<lb />
behind Virginia's heralded Mark Berna-<lb />
dino.<lb />
Bohlken and Ron Schnell finished first<lb />
and third respectively in the 200-yard<lb />
freestyle race with Schnell recording his<lb />
best time ever in that event.<lb />
Jim Hadley survived a slow start to<lb />
come back and finish second in the<lb />
50-yard freestyle and Schiffel and Kemp<lb />
finished second and third in the 200-yard<lb />
individual medley to give the Bucs a 24-19<lb />
lead going into the diving event.<lb />
Morrow and Ken Morin finished first<lb />
and second to up the advantage to 32-20.<lb />
The 200-yard butterfly event was the<lb />
key to the Cavaliers' comeback as they<lb />
finished first and second. Pirate Mike<lb />
Bretting, recovering from a year-long<lb />
intestinal problem, swam a great race, but<lb />
still finished third.<lb />
Bohlken came back to take the<lb />
100-yard freestyle event and then Schiffel<lb />
and Greg Hinchman finished first and<lb />
third in the 200-yard backstroke event.<lb />
Schiffel had to put on a last 50-yard sprint<lb />
to pull out his victory.<lb />
Larry Green managed to get a second<lb />
place in the 500-yard freestyle event and<lb />
Kemp swam a fine race to finish second<lb />
in the 200-yard breastroke race. This set<lb />
the stage for the divers. All East Carolina<lb />
had to do was finish first and second in<lb />
the three-meter diving events, then victory<lb />
would be theirs.<lb />
The "M and M Boys" (Morrow and<lb />
Morin) went back to work and they put on<lb />
a fine show for the large crowd and<lb />
wrapped up the victory.<lb />
The 400-yaid freestyle relay (Hadley,<lb />
Hinchman, Ruedlinger and Bohlken) put<lb />
the icing on the cake as they edged the<lb />
Cavaliers, whose cheers of "Number eight<lb />
would be great" (U. Va. was looking for<lb />
their eighth win of the year) turned to<lb />
"Number eight will be late<lb />
The Pirates, presently 4-4 on the<lb />
season will next travel to Washington,<lb />
D.C. to face Catholic University on<lb />
Saturday, February 16.<lb />

and Calvert Hall in a triple dual meet at<lb />
3:30 p.m. in Minges Pool this Friday prior<lb />
to the ASISDC on Saturday.<lb />

power North Carolina State. Friday night,<lb />
the Pirates return to Minges Coliseum for<lb />
an 8:00 contest with conference<lb />
challenger William & Mary.<lb />
Tht Pirates, while seeking to boost<lb />
Southern Conference prestige at the<lb />
expense of the State Wolfpack, face a<lb />
more important task when William & Mary<lb />
Lady Cagers break even<lb />
comes to town.<lb />
The Indians, sporting an impressive<lb />
line-up of individual stars, have<lb />
steamrolled to a 9-2 record, losing only to<lb />
Clarion State (4th in the NCAA in 1973)<lb />
and powerful Maryland, which has won<lb />
the ACC championship for the past<lb />
twenty years.<lb />
With Appalachian State already<lb />
disposed of by the Pirates, 36-4, in East<lb />
Carolina's last outing, William & Mary<lb />
figures to be the chief threat to ECU'S bit<lb />
to claim a third consecutive conference<lb />
championship.<lb />
"As in past years, William & Mary has<lb />
another very strong team cautions Pirate<lb />
Coach John Welborn. "Pending the<lb />
outcome of our match with N.C. State,<lb />
they represent the biggest obstacle in our<lb />
path to another undefeated season.<lb />
"They match up with us very closely<lb />
man-for-man Welborn adds. "Without<lb />
doubt, they will be out toughest<lb />
conference challenger. We also look for<lb />
them to extend us in the conference<lb />
tournament<lb />

The Lady Pirate basketball squad<lb />
broke even this week by bowing to Elon<lb />
54-53 and downing Frances Marion 63-50.<lb />
Thursday night found the ECU women<lb />
on the road to play an undefeated Elon<lb />
team. The match was a heartbreaker with<lb />
numerous fouls and an overtime telling<lb />
the story in favor of Elon.<lb />
At halftime the score was an even<lb />
24-24. Third quarter action saw ECU pull<lb />
into the lead behind the scoring of<lb />
Sheilah Cotton and Lu Ann Swain.<lb />
Early in the fourth quarter with ECU<lb />
enjoying a nine point lead co-captain<lb />
Susan Manning fouled out. The scoring<lb />
gap began to close when Cotton joined<lb />
Manning on the bench later in the final<lb />
quater.<lb />
Without the two key players ECU was<lb />
caught by Elon and went into overtime<lb />
with the score 51-51. ECU gained only<lb />
two points in the overtime from<lb />
one-and-one foul line situations. Elon<lb />
bettered the Pirates with two field goals<lb />
and stalled play until the clock ran out.<lb />
The high scorer for the game was<lb />
Cotton with 26 points followed by Swain<lb />
with 16. ECU shot 40 per cent from the<lb />
floor and capitalized on 64 per cent of<lb />
theri free throws.<lb />
Things went differently for the women<lb />
on Friday night in Memorial Lmnasium<lb />
when they downed a hustling Frances<lb />
Marion team from South Carolina, 63-50.<lb />
ECUhad a hard time warming up, but<lb />
freshman Lu Ann Swain kept scoringfrom<lb />
inside while her teammates gathered<lb />
steam. The first quarter ended with ECU<lb />
down by one point, 15-14.<lb />
Second quarter play was sparked by<lb />
the short but sure Sharon Smith and<lb />
Lollie Edwards. Smith stole the ball and<lb />
scored at a critical moment while Edwards<lb />
made some clutch shots from the comer.<lb />
Cotten sent ECUinto the locker room<lb />
with a two point lead by taking the last<lb />
shot of the half off a jump ball at center<lb />
court. The score was 29-27.<lb />
The third quarter saw the Lady Pirates<lb />
widen their lead by 11 points. With 2:44<lb />
remaining in the quarter, Swain left the<lb />
court with an injured thigh. Smith took<lb />
the final point of the third quarter from<lb />
the foul line to widen the lead to nine<lb />
points.<lb />
In the fourth quarter it was ECU<lb />
passing, rebounding and scoring like the<lb />
state and regional champs of last.<lb />
"Everyone played well. Tonight they did<lb />
what they were capable of doing said<lb />
Catherine Bolton about the effort against<lb />
Frances Marion.<lb />
High scorer for the game was Cotton<lb />
with 17 points, followed by Swain with 11<lb />
and Manning with 10. Manning lead the<lb />
team in rebounding with nine.<lb />
The Lady Pirates shot 41 per cent from<lb />
the floor and 58 per cent from the foul<lb />
line.<lb />
In the J.V game against UNC-W, Myra<lb />
Modlin lead the victorious Pirates with 15<lb />
points. The score was 58-48.<lb />

The East Carolina Women's Gymnastic<lb />
team participated in two meets last week<lb />
and met disappointing defeats each time.<lb />
On Friday, the girls traveled to Chapel<lb />
Hill for a meet with UNC and Winthrop<lb />
College. The ECU squad apparently had<lb />
won a narrow victory over the Tar Heels,<lb />
but a rules technicality cost the Bucs a<lb />
penalty which gave UNC a 55.8 to 55.6<lb />
victory. Winthrop placed third with 21.65<lb />
points.<lb />
Joan Fulp placed in three events with<lb />
a first in the uneven bars and second<lb />
place finishes in the floor exercises and<lb />
balance beam. Gail Phillips placed<lb />
second on the bars and third on the floor<lb />
exercises. Freshman Linda Lane's out-<lb />
standing performance in vaulting brought<lb />
her a first place.<lb />
Wednesday night, the women Pirates<lb />
traveled to Duke, where they placed a<lb />
disappointing third to Appalachian State<lb />
and Duke. Hampered by injuries, the girls<lb />
placed only one girl in the top threein any<lb />
event. Miss Fulp placed third on the<lb />
balance beam.<lb />

Lady tankers split<lb />
Last Friday afternoon the women's<lb />
swimming team journeyed to Columbia,<lb />
S.C. to participate in a double-dual<lb />
meet. The lady Pirates lost to Florida<lb />
State 88-51, but defeated weak Columbia<lb />
College 111-18.<lb />
The women did not swim under the<lb />
best of conditions. They left Greenville at<lb />
nine o'clock Friday morning and arrived in<lb />
Columbia at three thirty. They hardly had<lb />
time to get their feet wet before the start<lb />
of the meet at four.<lb />
Two of the lady Bucs were double<lb />
winners in spite of the situation. Linda<lb />
Smiley was first in both the 50 and<lb />
100-yard butterfly. Beverly Osborn tri-<lb />
umphed in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle<lb />
events.<lb />
Coach Eric Orders awarded the Gold<lb />
Award, symbolic of outstanding per-<lb />
formance, to Misses Smiley and Osborn.<lb />
The Gold Award, given in recognition<lb />
of outstanding effort, was won by Jan<lb />
Masters for the third consecutive week.<lb />
The lady swimmers close out their<lb />
season at the National meet to be held<lb />
March 14, 15 and 16 at Penn State.<lb />
