Real house<lb />
gets funds<lb />
from SGA<lb />
By BOB MARSKE<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The Real House, Pitt County's only<lb />
crisis intervention service, has received a<lb />
$1700 grant from the East Carolina<lb />
Student Government Association.<lb />
The grant, which was approved by the<lb />
SGA legislature shortly before Christmas<lb />
break, will go towards fulfilling the Real<lb />
House budget requirements for fiscal<lb />
1974. The budget, amounting to $6700,<lb />
will carry to June 30, 1974.<lb />
"Before we discovered the SGA<lb />
money said Skip Stansbury, a volunteer<lb />
at the Real House, "we had no idea where<lb />
any of the money would come from. After<lb />
receiving the $1700, however, we also<lb />
received $2500 each from the North<lb />
Carolina Drug Authority and the Local<lb />
Diocese of the Episcopal Church, and our<lb />
budget was complete<lb />
The budget represents payments for<lb />
general operating expenses for the next<lb />
six months, and an additional allotment<lb />
to provide for the hiring of a full time,<lb />
salaried director. "The expansion of our<lb />
staff to include a director said<lb />
Stansbury, "will serve to coordinate,<lb />
expand and generally improve our<lb />
programs<lb />
Mike Ertis, SGA Treasurer, termed the<lb />
money a donation rather than a<lb />
grant. "With a grant, there are generally<lb />
THE REAL HOUSE crisis intervention center<lb />
some strings, or obligations attached<lb />
said Ertis. "We did not include any<lb />
obligations The major opposition to the<lb />
Real House appropriation, according to<lb />
Ertis, is embodied in the belief of some<lb />
that "charity is not the SGA's<lb />
responsbility "However Ertis conclud-<lb />
ed, "the bill was backed by three or four<lb />
powerful legislators "That, he said, is<lb />
enough to make virtually any bill pass<lb />
on 14th and Evans received $1700 from me<lb />
The Real House is a non-profit service<lb />
which attempts to aid the ECU student<lb />
body and the Greenville public through<lb />
drug and problem counseling, abortion<lb />
referral, and other such services.<lb />
No fees are charged for their efforts,<lb />
and the majority of workers are<lb />
volunteers. "In fact said Stansbury,<lb />
"only two coordinators, who are paid $25<lb />
per week, and the new director receive any<lb />
SGA to help maintain Rears budget.<lb />
salary Volunteers answer telephones to<lb />
give advice and information, the primary<lb />
Real House function, and participate in<lb />
necessary maintenance and management<lb />
work.<lb />
"Eventually said Stansbury, "we<lb />
hope to move into a new house, closer to<lb />
the ECU population At present, the Real<lb />
House is located on the corner of<lb />
Fourteenth and Evans Street.<lb />
Thev can be solved<lb />
Traffic solutions studied by ECU ad hoc committee<lb />
By JOE VAUGHN<lb />
Special to the Fountainhead<lb />
Traffic congestion at ECU can be<lb />
solved through a comprehensive planning<lb />
study, according to Dr. Richard A.<lb />
Stephenson, faculty member of the new<lb />
ad hoc committee looking into traffic<lb />
problems.<lb />
The new ad hoc committee was<lb />
establish by the Faculty Senate upon<lb />
recommendation from the Faculty Welfare<lb />
Committee,It also recommended asking<lb />
James Lowry, director of physical plant,<lb />
and Joseph Calder, director of traffic and<lb />
security, for co-operation in the<lb />
study. The ad hoc committee consists of<lb />
both faculty and student members. Stu-<lb />
dents in ECU planning courses will gather<lb />
the information for the study.<lb />
"Students in planning courses offered<lb />
this quarter and next spring will be<lb />
working on the planning study which will<lb />
be completed in May Dr. Stephenson<lb />
said.<lb />
The planning students will be<lb />
collecting data to be used in decreasing<lb />
the volume of traffic on campus. By<lb />
obtaining information on areas of student<lb />
activity and their hourly transportation<lb />
needs, a transit system can take over<lb />
individual transportation on campus, Dr.<lb />
Stephenson says.<lb />
"The SGA-bus system can help, but if<lb />
the system is to operate efficiently we<lb />
have to have the planning study made<lb />
Dr. Stephenson said.<lb />
The U-shape of the campus plus its<lb />
being cut across by major city streets will<lb />
increase the difficulty for a planning<lb />
system to work, Dr. Stephenson<lb />
stated. He feels, however, that the basic<lb />
function of campus streets can be<lb />
changed from public use to service and<lb />
protection purposes.<lb />
"If they can block off the street<lb />
between Hawl and CU, they can do it with<lb />
other streets he stated.<lb />
Though ECU can not entirely become<lb />
an all-pedestrian campus, it can come<lb />
close to being one, Dr. Stephenson<lb />
says. An almost complete dependence on<lb />
a transit system and development of<lb />
central parking areas for day students<lb />
would decrease the traffic flow by 75<lb />
percent, Stephenson said.<lb />
"If we could get the day students in<lb />
large parking lots and increase faculty<lb />
parking and have staff parking close to<lb />
administration buildings at least naif the<lb />
streets on campus could be used by only<lb />
pedestrians Dr. Stephenson stated.<lb />
Day students who commute to campus<lb />
are the one's who will have to make the<lb />
sacrifice to relieve traffic congestion, Dr.<lb />
Stephenson says. But he also added that<lb />
day student parking would not be as<lb />
difficult to get, though central parking<lb />
lots would likely be located on the outer<lb />
edges of the campus.<lb />
"Now once a student gets to campus<lb />
he wants to park hir car the closest<lb />
possible to his class. Planning solutions<lb />
may be a little more inconvenient for<lb />
students, but it would decrease the<lb />
parking problem Dr. Stephenson said.<lb />
Good areas for university central<lb />
parking sites would be between 5th and<lb />
Reede Streets and near Allied Health<lb />
building, Stephenson says. Bus transit<lb />
would bring students from central parking<lb />
areas to classroom areas.<lb />
ECU'S traffic and parking problems are<lb />
no one's fault. They came about because<lb />
action was not taken in the past as the<lb />
problems developed, Stephenson stated.<lb />
But he also cites a previous lack of<lb />
response to trained faculty members'<lb />
insights into handling the traffic problems<lb />
as being one negative factor.<lb />
"One of the major problems Is that we<lb />
are supposed to have a campus long<lb />
range planning committee, but not a<lb />
faculty member is one the committee, and<lb />
now we have faculty members who have<lb />
backgrounds in planning Dr. Stephen-<lb />
son said.<lb />
Previously many planning suggestions<lb />
made by the faculty has gone by slightly<lb />
heeded or ignored, Stephenson says. On<lb />
several occasions the university has<lb />
turned to outside help in solving planning<lb />
problems which could have been given to<lb />
faculty personnel, Stephenson said.<lb />
"In 1963, my planning students<lb />
planned an extensive system to control<lb />
traffic, but the next year a planning firm<lb />
from New York was hired at a fee of about<lb />
$10,000 to do the same thing. Basically<lb />
we did it for free, but they did not even<lb />
adhere to the New York firm's plan,<lb />
Stephenson says.<lb />
Now the administration is more<lb />
receptive. The administration is aware of<lb />
the problem and it is fed up with the<lb />
problem, Stephenson said.<lb />
"I think we are on a new road, so to<lb />
speak. And the time is ripe to solve the<lb />
paking problem Dr. Stephenson says.<lb />
There is a trend getting away from cars<lb />
to bicycling and walking according to a<lb />
study made by the recreation department,<lb />
Dr. Stephenson says. And too, Dr.<lb />
Stephenson feels that with gas prices<lb />
increasing, economics may force an<lb />
all-pedestrian campus to come about.<lb />

Jones gives reasons for Medical school here<lb />
Rep. Walter B. Jones, ON.C, advised<lb />
ECU officials today that "significant<lb />
federal assistance" has been "and, in my<lb />
judgement, will be available to new and<lb />
developing medical schools<lb />
Jones, of Farmville, said "I want to set<lb />
the record straight on this aspect of the<lb />
ECU medical school question that has<lb />
been virtually ignored up to now<lb />
Jones' statement said:<lb />
"My office looked into this matter, by<lb />
contacting the responsible agency of the<lb />
United States Public Health Service, the<lb />
Division of Physician and Health<lb />
Professions Education. This Division<lb />
administers the several federal grant<lb />
programs of the Health manpower<lb />
Training Act of 1971 which I am certain<lb />
will be renewed during our upcoming<lb />
congressional session<lb />

SGA approves<lb />
money for<lb />
minorities<lb />
By SUSAN QUINN<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
An appropriation of $1,000 for two<lb />
Minority Recruitments booklets was<lb />
passed by the SGA Legislature<lb />
Monday. This money will be used by<lb />
student volunteers interested in minority<lb />
affairs to compile two booklets; one to be<lb />
used as an orientation publication and the<lb />
other as an informative publication<lb />
concerning all minority affairs and<lb />
activities on the ECU campus. p<lb />
The sum of $1,900 was appropriated to <lb />
the ECU delegation to the North Carolina o<lb />
Student Legislature (NCSL). The appro- -<lb />
priation will be used to pay expenses of m<lb />
the 24 ECU delegates at the NCSL March<lb />
6-10 in Raleigh.<lb />
The Legislature also added Minges,<lb />
Allied Health and the Croatan as precincts<lb />
for voting in campus elections by<lb />
changing general election rules. Legis- '<lb />
lator D. D. Dixon explained that the<lb />
precincts were added as a convenience to<lb />
students whose classes are centralized in<lb />
the Minges or Allied Health areas and<lb />
those who do not frequently visit the<lb />
student union.<lb />
Patrice Langdon of Fleming dorm and<lb />
Vem Bean of Aycock dorm were sworn in<lb />
as new legislators by judiciary council<lb />
member, Bill Phipps.<lb />
It was also announced that there is a<lb />
vacancy for a day student representative<lb />
and that final screenings would be held<lb />
January 24 at 5 p.m. in 306<lb />
Wright. Applications may be picked up in<lb />
303 Wright or from the following members<lb />
of the screening committee: Jane<lb />
Noff singer, Nancy Rogerson, Rick<lb />
Garrett, Caki King, Mimi Whiteside and<lb />
John Davis.<lb />
is eligible to apply for federal funds to<lb />
assist in its establishment, its facilities,<lb />
and its operations. The new school must<lb />
have reasonable assurance1 of accredit-<lb />
ation which I personally view as not<lb />
difficult if a state authorizes the<lb />
development of the medical school and<lb />
provides for adequate basic funding for<lb />
facilities and for faculty and staff<lb />
"The developing medical school then<lb />
is eligible automatically for a direct<lb />
Capitation Grant based on the number of<lb />
students enrolled. I understand that the<lb />
East Carolina School of Medicine received<lb />
a proportionate share last year through<lb />
the University of North Carolina-Chapel<lb />
Hill Medical School, based on the 20<lb />
medical students enrolled at East<lb />
Carolina. With the change implemented<lb />
in the administration of the East Carolina<lb />
University program this year I understand<lb />
that no capitation funds have been<lb />
transferred to East Carolina for use during<lb />
this current year<lb />
"A second grant program, Start-Up<lb />
Assistance, provides federal funds each<lb />
year for up to four years for new medical<lb />
schools beginning even the year before<lb />
any students are enrolled. The specific<lb />
amount authorized is $10,000 per student<lb />
initially, dropping to $2,500 for each<lb />
student in the fourth year of the start-up<lb />
granting period; the new school must<lb />
plan to enroll at least 24 students in its<lb />
first year of teaching.<lb />
"Another fetiuMl program, Special<lb />
Project Grants, pit ides funds to medical<lb />
schools for exa nple to innovate, to<lb />
establish family practice programs, to<lb />
increase enroll nent from rural areas and<lb />
from minority or low-income groups, and<lb />
to train physical assistants.<lb />
Center finds jobs<lb />

By GLENN HARGETT, JR.<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
January and the next three months are<lb />
the prime job recruiting times for spring<lb />
graduates, according to Fumey K. James,<lb />
director of the ECU Placement Service.<lb />
Last year over 83 percent of the<lb />
students listed with the service found<lb />
jobs. James added in a recent interview<lb />
that the placement office provides a<lb />
service almost indispensible to the senior<lb />
seeking a job.<lb />
In order for the service to work for a<lb />
student, the studeii must come by the<lb />
placement office and get a placement<lb />
package. The placement office makes<lb />
available to the listed senior interviews<lb />
ith prospective employers.<lb />
Such firms and companies as Planter's<lb />
National Bank, Sears, Roebuck & Co<lb />
Wachovia Bank & Trust Co and Riot Life<lb />
Insurance Co. have been a part of the<lb />
January interview schedule. Others for<lb />
January have included over seven school<lb />
systems including Greensboro City,<lb />
Norfolk City, and Winston-SalemForsyth<lb />
County schools.<lb />
James emphasized that there was still<lb />
time for spring graduates to sign up for<lb />
this prime recruiting time.<lb />
"And in spite of comments I have<lb />
heard or read these past two years t" the<lb />
contrary there are still federal funds<lb />
appropriated and available to assist in the<lb />
construction of facilities for a new<lb />
medical school. These funds, as well as<lb />
Start-Up and Special Project funds, are<lb />
not automatically doled out: applications<lb />
for them must be made and reviewed in<lb />
competition with applications from other<lb />
medical schools<lb />
"My point is simply that a new and<lb />
developing medical school is eligible to<lb />
apply for federal funds to supplement the<lb />
basic state funds appropriated to it. Let<lb />
me ei .iasize however that the<lb />
developing medical school must reach<lb />
independent status to receive the<lb />
maximum funds possible. This is one<lb />
more reason for action leading to an<lb />

"The Prisoner of Second Avenue A<lb />
Night of Biting Humor<lb />
By PATSY HINTON<lb />
STAFF WRITER<lb />
Last Wednesday night the hus-<lb />
band-wife team of King Donovan and<lb />
Imogene Coca delignted a packed<lb />
audience at McGinnis Auditorium with<lb />
their superb, sensational, satirical<lb />
rendition of "The Prisoner of Second<lb />
Avenue<lb />
From Mel Edison's (King Donovan's)<lb />
first "Oh, God; Oh God, God, God" to the<lb />
final scene of the Edison's preparing to<lb />
battle the snow and their neighbors with<lb />
gigantic snow shovels, the play was<lb />
fantastically funny. Definitely a spoof of<lb />
New York City, the play showed life in the<lb />
"concrete jungle" at its worst, from<lb />
air-conditioning that overworked to<lb />
garbage collectors tnat occasionally<lb />
worked and effective policeman that did<lb />
not work at all.<lb />
King Donovan portrayed a haggard,<lb />
middle-aged executive who was fired as a<lb />
result of his company's "economic<lb />
cutback (familiar line of the times, no?),<lb />
vho then subsequently suffered a nervous<lb />
breakdown. Imogene Coca as Edna<lb />
Edison, Mel Edison's emotionally strong<lb />
wife, played the one stable force in her<lb />
husband's shaky grip on reality, until near<lb />
the end of the play, she.too, was finally<lb />
beaten in the rat-race.<lb />
Now, this little plot does not seem<lb />
funny in the least, but the style in which<lb />
the play was presented (coupled with the<lb />
outstanding funny lines of King Donovan<lb />
and Imogene Coca) lifted the play out of<lb />
what could have been a rut of depression<lb />
and really made the viewer laugh, while<lb />
perhaps inwardly vowing he would never<lb />
live in New York.<lb />
This play is a comedy by Neil Simon,<lb />
who also wrote the dialogue for the film,<lb />
"The Out-Of-Towners another spoof on<lb />
New York City which starred Jack<lb />
Lemmon and Sandy Dennis ("Oh my God,<lb />
we're being robbed). "The Prisoner of<lb />
Second Avenue" was originally directed<lb />
by Mike Nichols, who has also directed<lb />
the award-winning movies, "Catch-22<lb />
"The Graduate and "Carnal Knowledge<lb />
That "The Prisoner of Second Avenue"<lb />
could command the attention of such a<lb />
director speaks well indeed of the play.<lb />
And now, a word on Imogene Coca<lb />
and King Donovan, the indisputable stars<lb />
of the night. Imogene Coca has appeared<lb />
on the television shows of such stars as<lb />
Danny Kaye, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin,<lb />
and Ed Sullivan. She first came into the<lb />
theater when she was only eleven years<lb />
old. In her life-time career, she has<lb />
appeared nationwide in a variety of plays,<lb />
for example, "Once Upon a Mattress<lb />
"Thurber Carnival "No, No, Nanette"<lb />
and many others. To me, Imogene Coca<lb />
seems a Carol Burneu minus the silly<lb />
bumps and grinds that often makes the<lb />
latter seem a bit risque. Like Burnett,<lb />
Coca is not an outstandingly beautiful<lb />
woman, but her vitality, her poise and her<lb />
abundant charm pave the way for her<lb />
command of any stage. Coca was<lb />
enthusiastically applauded by the<lb />
audience on, her first appearance at the<lb />
beginning of the play; her husband<lb />
Donovan on the other hand, received no<lb />
such ovation.<lb />
King Donovan, in his role as Mel<lb />
Edison, was nonetheless outstanding.<lb />
His physical metamorphosis from a shaky<lb />
but still respectable executive into a<lb />
jobless, mental wreck wearing tennis<lb />
shoes and a sloppy houserobe was<lb />
superb. Mr. Donovan, who has been in<lb />
the theater since the age of fifteen, is a<lb />
product of television's "The Bob<lb />
Cummings Show" and more recently,<lb />
"Please, Don't Eat the Daisies He has<lb />
appeared with his wife in more than<lb />
eighteen theatrical productions, including<lb />
"You Know I Can't Hear You When The<lb />
Water's Running "Never Too Late and<lb />
"You Can't Take It With You<lb />
Alan North, playing the role of Harry<lb />
Edison, Mel's practical, no-nonsense,<lb />
older brother, also rendered a magnificent<lb />
performance even though his role was<lb />
minor when compared with Coca and<lb />
Donovan.<lb />
Thelma Lee, Karen Ford, and Patricia<lb />
Ripley, who played Peart, Jessie and<lb />
Pauline, respectively, added to the biting<lb />
humor in their prune-faced roles as Mel<lb />
Edison's gossipy, prim, stingy, older<lb />
sisters.<lb />
The audience (composed mainly of<lb />
older people) was very responsive and<lb />
enthusiastic. I was disappointed, how-<lb />
ever, that more ECU students did not<lb />
make the effort to engage in a night of<lb />
rare talent and entertainment. Now come<lb />
on gang, a little bit of culture ain't gonna<lb />
kill nobody!<lb />

the credit for today's surge of interest in<lb />

wonder why no one has thought of<lb />
making a million off blue-grass before<lb />
now; after all, rock-and-roll is a child of<lb />
mountain music, and everyone knows of<lb />
the fortunes that have been grossed from<lb />

Eari Scruggs, though, allegedly one of<lb />
the best banjo players in the world, has<lb />
discovered the magic appeal of blue-grass<lb />
(or created an appeal), and is playing 'The<lb />

the same, though, and while this<lb />
foot-stompinbanjo-pickinguitar-<lb />
pluckin' tune can grab the attention<lb />
initially, can it sustain the interest, the<lb />
enthusiasm, it generates? Judging by the<lb />
crowd's reactions at Minges Thursday<lb />
night, I think not.<lb />
When Scruggs, Inc. first appeared, the<lb />
crown reacted with a standing ovation,<lb />
complete with foot-stomping, whistling,<lb />
cheering and abundant clapping. Then<lb />
The Revue responded by digging into their<lb />
mountain music. Gradually, the crowd<lb />
sat down, the foot-stomping stamped out,<lb />
and the whistling, cheering and clapping<lb />
came in sporadic spurts, usually at the<lb />
beginning or the end of a number. Maybe<lb />
the audience was really trying to listen, to<lb />
"get into" the music, as the vernacular<lb />
goes. But judging by the numbers that<lb />
constantly streamed out to the lobby<lb />
(some not returning) l doubt there were<lb />
any great efforts on the parts of most<lb />
people to concentrate on Scruggs' style.<lb />
Earl Scruggs and his blue-grass<lb />
music, like overalls and brogans, really<lb />
appealed only to a few people. The<lb />
majority of ECU students, I'm afraid, like<lb />
programmed robots, simply responded as<lb />
they have seen the tenny-boppers do on<lb />

By SENATOR BARRY GOLDWATER<lb />
For months now, Administration<lb />
critics have lectured us about abuses ol<lb />
power in the White House and other parts<lb />
of the executive branch.<lb />
I suggest the time has come to take a<lb />
look in the other direction. It is time to<lb />
examine how well the legislative and<lb />
judicial branches handle power, especiahy<lb />
power given them to investigate the<lb />
Watergate situation and related matters.<lb />
The Senate investigating committee,<lb />
for example, made great use of the power<lb />
to subpoena witnesses and then abusea<lb />
that power, in many instances, by leaking<lb />
entire transcripts of what they were told<lb />
to the news media.<lb />
Then we have the classic example of<lb />
former special prosecutor Archibald<lb />
Cox He used the unusual powers of his<lb />
office to obtain a confidential statement<lb />
from a former attorney general of the<lb />
United States and then went directly to a<lb />
meeting where he informed two Democrat<lb />
senators and their staffs of the contents<lb />
of that confidential communication.<lb />
Needless to say, that material in Cox s<lb />
possession quickly found its way onto the<lb />
front page of the New York Times.<lb />
BAD ENOUGH<lb />
Using material obtained through<lb />
the power of subpoena to get news<lb />
headlines is bad enough, but using it for<lb />
the amusement of guests at a Christmas<lb />
party tops everything else we have heard<lb />
about irresponsibility and the abuse of<lb />
power among people investigating the<lb />
Watergate irregularities and legal actions<lb />
based on those incidents.<lb />
But that is exactly what happened<lb />
recently when an attorney for PN30<lb />
and several consumer groups used the<lb />
power of subpoena to obtain a<lb />
presidential tape recording and played rt<lb />
for the amusement of a group gathered at<lb />
a party. The attorney, William A.<lb />
Dobrovir, obtained the tapt in connection<lb />
with a civil suit challenging the Nixon<lb />
Administration's actions in increasing<lb />
milk price supports.<lb />
Dobrovir, in a meeting with U.b.<lb />
District Court Judge William B. Jones,<lb />
acknowledged playing the tape during<lb />
what he described as "an impulsive five<lb />
minutes" at the Georgetown home of a<lb />
woman friend. He said it all started when<lb />
he bragged to his friends that he had the<lb />

He further acknowledged that the<lb />

OIL CRISIS<lb />
Iran - a beautiful, modem city -<lb />
capital of a nation which has been the<lb />
target of foreign conquerors since the day<lb />
Mohammed and the site of the famous<lb />
F D R -Churchill-Stalin conference in<lb />
1943-has suddenly become a major focal<lb />
point for a world in crisis.<lb />
mere can be no way of overestimating<lb />
its present importance to an energy-hun-<lb />
gry United States. In fact, I believe that<lb />
all of us - from gasoline-shy truck farmer<lb />
in Arizona to the business tycoon in New<lb />
York - can give thanks for a far-sighted<lb />
U.S. policy which backed the exceptional-<lb />
ly brilliant Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi,<lb />
who presently governs Iran.<lb />
I came here at the invitation of the<lb />
Shah and at the cost of missing important<lb />
business in the U.S. Senate because of<lb />
the deep concern over the gasoline crisis<lb />
which I found in my home state. Like<lb />
many Western states, Arizona is<lb />
especially dependent upon adequate<lb />
gasoline supplies because of the long<lb />
distances which exist between its<lb />
populated communities.<lb />
The Shah of Iran, once regarded by<lb />
Americans as a somewhat distant and<lb />
colorful figure of no importance, could<lb />
easily become one of the key factors in<lb />
producing an anangement that would<lb />
once again send oil in unlimited<lb />
quantities to Europe, the United States<lb />
and Japan. This is because he moved<lb />
quickly, with our help, to fill the vacuum<lb />
in one of the most strategic areas of the<lb />
world when the British withdrew as<lb />
dominant force some years ago. Thus, in<lb />
this rugged rock-strewn country halfway<lb />

American aid dollars are paying a<lb />
handsome dividend-not only for the<lb />
people in my native state but for the<lb />
whole North American continent and the<lb />
remainder of the free world<lb />
.<lb />
It is my belief that this man Is<lb />
destined to become one of the great<lb />
leaders of our time, and it is fortunate<lb />

"EXCEPTIONAL ?!? CHILDREN"<lb />
-comment pertaining to article entitled<lb />
"Student Council Formed for Exceptional<lb />
Children Fountainhead No. 2510 Jan.<lb />
74.<lb />
I quote Sarah Mickey, Vice President<lb />
of the Student Council for Exceptional<lb />
Children (SCEC):<lb />
"Exceptional children include the<lb />
emotionally disturbed, mentally retarded,<lb />
learning disabled, those deficient in<lb />
hearing and speech and gifted children<lb />
Classification of infirm, deformed, and<lb />
mentally retarded along with the gifted is<lb />
both morally repulsive and obscene,<lb />
("obscene offensive to the rational<lb />
mind .definition mine.)<lb />
To elevate the dregs of genetic<lb />
accident, the liabilities of mankind, to the<lb />
same status as the gifted highly<lb />
intelligent assets (or more likely, to<lb />
achieve the opposite) is essentially<lb />
classifying mankind into two groups<lb />
"normal" and "non-normal<lb />
You have used the term "exceptional"<lb />
in its broadest dictionary definition:<lb />
uncommon, extraordinary (American<lb />
Heritage Dictionary). What you do not<lb />
seem to realize is that you have perversely<lb />
removed a necessary distinction between<lb />
the fortunate accident of intellectual<lb />
giftedness, and the unfortunate accident<lb />
of physical or mental impairment.<lb />
By removing the distinction, and along<lb />
with it the old categories of identification,<lb />
between favorable and unfavorable<lb />
mutation, you are inevitably forming a<lb />
new structure where all mutation, good or<lb />
bad, will be looked upon with disfavor for<lb />
being non-normal. This is already<lb />
prevalent in public schools where gifted<lb />
children are condemned for failure to<lb />
conform to classroom standards.<lb />
Please do not misunderstand my<lb />
intention do not disfavor or<lb />
disapprove aid to the handicapped or the<lb />
impaired. I disapprove of the physically<lb />
and mentally disabled being given equal<lb />
status with, classified with, and<lb />
associated with their gifted, productive<lb />
counterparts.<lb />
This classification is representative of<lb />
the lack of essential ethical convictions<lb />
and value judgement ability on behalf of<lb />
those individuals associated with the<lb />
formation of SCEC, and those who<lb />
complacently observe this abrogation of<lb />
value judgement. This situation stems<lb />
from the lack of conscious, volitionaily<lb />
acquired, philosophical consistency be-<lb />
hind individual actions.<lb />
I am reminded of a bad joke about<lb />
ccmmitties which I will adapt here<lb />
(student) councila body with six or<lb />
more legs but no head (brain).<lb />
Perhaps you concerned students<lb />
honestly believe that the gifted have an<lb />
intrinsic defect which must be bred<lb />
out the fact that they are superior and<lb />
do not conform to current social<lb />
standards labeled normal. If this is your<lb />
concern, then the new categorization of<lb />
non-normal effectively screens out, at an<lb />
early age, that faction of men which<lb />
"normalcy" is ill equipped to control.<lb />
This faction consists of the men who have<lb />
the ability to volitionaily hold rational<lb />
intellectual convictions.<lb />
Yes, gentlemen and ladies, whether by<lb />
unknowing accident or carefully planned<lb />
subtle subversion, your group classifi-<lb />

Music Funds<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
In the Jan. 15. issue of the<lb />
Fountainhead, there was an article with<lb />
the headline "SGA cuts music fund<lb />
request Why? In the article there were<lb />
no reasons for this action. It merely said<lb />
they were "appropriated $1,000.00 by the<lb />
SGA legislature and I got the impression<lb />
that only $250.00 of this is guaranteed.<lb />
Being a lover of music, and feejing that<lb />
the music department of ECU fulfills this<lb />
love more than adequately, I'M very<lb />
disappointed in this cut of funds.<lb />
The music department is one of the<lb />
better departments here at ECU and it<lb />
seems foolish to put a damper on it. I<lb />
want some reasons why the sga cut the<lb />
funds of the performing organizations<lb />
within the music department and I hope<lb />
they are better than some of the reasons<lb />
given for some of the other actions taken<lb />
by this body. By the way, by now you<lb />
probably think I am a music major. Sorry<lb />

Woman's place<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
The Michigan Technological University<lb />
at Houghton, Michigan some time ago<lb />
distributed among its women students a<lb />
questionnarie on the women's liberation<lb />
movement, including the subjects of birth<lb />
control and working wives.<lb />
A classic answer written by a wife and<lb />
mother of six, because of its thought<lb />
provoking contents follows:<lb />
"I find most of the questions on the<lb />
enclosed questionnaire irrevelant to me,<lb />
as I am not a full-time student on this<lb />
campus, not in the same age range as I<lb />
presume you are. However, since you<lb />
have included me in your survey, I am<lb />
taking the liberation of expressing my<lb />
opinion on the "Women's Liberation"<lb />
movement in general.<lb />
"I do not agree that being a member of<lb />
the female sex is a detriment in any phase<lb />
of life, i do not feel that I have been<lb />
discriminated against at any time. If<lb />
anything, i feel that I have been<lb />
"discriminated for in other words,<lb />
protected, respected, and admired. I had<lb />
a few years of a career, but I gladly traded<lb />
it to marry and raise a family.<lb />
"I feel that as a wife and mother I have<lb />
a key role in the development of a portion<lb />
of our society. I have played an important<lb />
part in helping my husband to succeed in<lb />
his career, and I am rewarded by his<lb />
gratitude, respect and love.<lb />
"I am shaping the lives of six future<lb />
adults by instilling in them a feeling of<lb />
security by having been raised in a home<lb />
where they are loved and wanted, guiding<lb />
them in the character traits which will<lb />
enable them to become successful and<lb />
responsible citizens. For this I will be<lb />
regarded with the satisfaction of seeing<lb />
them grow and head families of their own<lb />
and secceed in the world, and am again<lb />
rewarded by their love and appreciation.<lb />
To suppose that every worthwile job has<lb />
to be repaid by a monetary salary is<lb />
foolish and untrue.<lb />
"I do not view marriage as a career,<lb />
but as a part of the total person-an<lb />
opportunity for a woman to become whole<lb />
and fulfill her most desirable role in<lb />
life. The fact that housework can become<lb />
mundane is a challenge to keep your eyes<lb />
on the total picture of what you are<lb />
accomplishing and to work out your own<lb />
personal time schedule so you can<lb />
include other interesting and growth-<lb />
including activities. (My enrollment at<lb />
Tech is only one of such activities.)<lb />
"You have asked about whether<lb />
contraceptives should be available, and I<lb />
assume you are pushing the legalizing of<lb />
abortion. Haws you ever considered going<lb />
in the other direction? How about a<lb />
movement to promote chastity both<lb />
before and after marriage? How about a<lb />
movement to erase the double<lb />
standard-not in the way it is going,<lb />
toward promiscuity among women, out<lb />
teach men to be virtuous? Did you know<lb />
there are thousands of men and women<lb />
who are able to live by this principle?<lb />
"As for those women who must work<lb />
to sustain themselves or their families, I<lb />
do agree that "equal pay for equal work"<lb />
sounds like a fair rule. However, I<lb />
seriously question that a woman can in<lb />
every case do equal work.<lb />
"I feel that if more women were<lb />
devoting their time and efforts to<lb />
strengthening the home, doing commu-<lb />
nity service, helping their neighbors when<lb />
they are in trouble, and teaching their<lb />
cnildren to be good citizens instead of<lb />
trying to go out and compete with men<lb />
economically and in prestige, our society<lb />
would have a better chance of surviving<lb />
the stresses to which it is subjected.<lb />
"Unless we fortify ourselves from the<lb />
inside, no laws, regulations or<lb />
institutions can save us from chaos and<lb />
destruction. How about worrying about<lb />
that instead of where you're going to find<lb />
an Tampax or why you can't be admitted<lb />
to the varsity tennis team?"<lb />
Women who seek to "free" themselves<lb />
from the assignment God gave them, as<lb />
wives and mothers charged with rearing<lb />
the next generation in good character and<lb />
righteousness, fail to understand their<lb />
true destiny.<lb />

White Ball<lb />
To Fountainhead:<lb />
As everyone probably knows by now,<lb />
the APO"s are in the process of holding<lb />
their annual selection of the White Ball<lb />
Queen. To aid in the selective process,<lb />
one has only to drop a penny in the<lb />
bucket which represents his choice. Then<lb />
What? Supposedly all the money goes to<lb />
charity, and maybe it does. Then again,<lb />
maybe it doesn't.<lb />
Two years ago, I, as an official of the<lb />
SGA, was asked to supervise the counting<lb />
of the money - I mean ballots. It seems<lb />
that there is a law or rule or something<lb />
somewhere that says there must be an<lb />
official of the SGA present to insure that<lb />
no dishonesty arises. A necessary<lb />
precaution I assumed and went down to<lb />
do my duty. However, when the buckets<lb />
were opened, I was instructed that I was<lb />
only there for show and in no<lb />
circumstances was I to see the actual<lb />
counting of the money (ballots!). I was<lb />
told that I was supposed to stay on the<lb />
other side of the room from the counters,<lb />
APOs all. Even from my far comer,<lb />
though, I was able to see the joy on the<lb />
APO's faces when one of them discovered<lb />
a $100 bill in one of the buckets.<lb />
After I had thus insured all the<lb />
candidates and ail the voters that no<lb />
wrongdoing had been done, I talked with<lb />
another official of theSGA. It seems that<lb />
he also had been through the same thing.<lb />
I do not claim that, in fact, any<lb />
dishonesty showed through the unbiearn-<lb />
ished surface of any APO that evening;<lb />
and I will not say so; however, I do sty<lb />
that the young lady who received a<lb />
one-hundred dollar bill in addition to all<lb />
that other money failed to receive enough<lb />
money (votes) to win the contest.<lb />

3 cents a bottle<lb />
Home brew made easy with a kit<lb />
(CPS)-Ever since the ancient Egyptians<lb />
handed down their original recipe, people<lb />
have been brewing beer. Today it Is<lb />
possible for everyone to make cheap,<lb />
organic beer in their own kitchens for as<lb />
little as 3 cents per bottle.<lb />
As with any other endeavor home<lb />
brewing is not a foolproof task,<lb />
sometimes the product is less than<lb />
potable. But once you have made the<lb />
initial investment in necessary equipment<lb />
and tried a couple of batches you will be<lb />
reluctant to return to the watery,<lb />
chemical-laden commercial variety.<lb />
To begin the beer making operation<lb />
the brewer needs a beer hydrometer,<lb />
which indicates when the sugar has<lb />
turned to alcohol and the beer is ready to<lb />
bottle; or a sacchrometer serves the same<lb />
purpose but has an extra scale which<lb />
measures the alcoholic percentage of the<lb />
beer. You will also need an adjustable<lb />
bottle capper, bottle caps, a crock or<lb />
plastic trash can, a rubber syphon and a<lb />
supply of soft drink or beer bottles. Do<lb />
not get the twist-off variety because they<lb />
cannot be capped with conventional bottle<lb />
caps. The total outlay for this equipment,<lb />
excluding the bottles, will be under<lb />
$15. The bottles can usually be gotton<lb />
from friendly bar or store owners or by<lb />
ransacking old sheds or garages.<lb />
These supplies will last you<lb />
indefinitely and the replenishable supplies<lb />
you will need are brewer's yeast, white<lb />
sugar and a can of hop flavored malt<lb />
extract syrup. Although some brewers<lb />
vouch for baker's yeast it is advisable to<lb />
get brewer's yeast at any wine and beer<lb />
supply store and the malt syrup can be<lb />
bought at any supermarket.<lb />
The following recipe is for an eight<lb />
batch, although you can go lower or<lb />
higher depending on the size of your<lb />
crock or trash can. For the eight gallon<lb />
batch you need eight gallons of water,<lb />
eight pounds of sugar, a packet of yeast<lb />
and a 3 pound can of malt. If you desire<lb />
stouter beer, add a couple more pounds<lb />
of sugar, if weaker beer is desired use up<lb />
to two pounds less sugar.<lb />
Purists insist the entire eight gallons<lb />
of water be boiled first, but palatable beer<lb />
can be made from tap water. Take about a<lb />
half gallon of water from your crock and<lb />
bring it to a boil, add the sugar and boil<lb />
mixture until it is a thin, clear syrup.<lb />
Dissolve the malt syrup in a quart or so of<lb />
hot water (this makes it easier to add to<lb />
the crock.) Add both the sugar and malt<lb />
syrups to the crock and stir thoroughly.<lb />
At this point, if you have a<lb />
the<lb />
the<lb />
sacchrometer you can insert it into<lb />
crock and get a reading of what<lb />
alcoholic content of your beer will be.<lb />
Then dissolve the yeast in a half cup<lb />
of lukewarm water and add it to the<lb />
crock. Caution: be sure the water in your<lb />
crock is below 90 degrees Fahrenheit or<lb />
the yeast will be killed. Stir the mixture<lb />
again thoroughly. Insert your hydrometer<lb />
or sacchrometer and tie a plastic covering<lb />
firmly around the crock and let it stand<lb />
7-12 days. Check your hydrometer<lb />
periodically and when it has reached its<lb />
red line or reads one half percent, the beer<lb />
is ready to be bottled.<lb />
Use the rubber syphon to transfer the<lb />
beer from the crock to the bottles. Cap it<lb />
immediately and put it in a cool, dark<lb />
place for two weeks, the longer it is<lb />
stored the better its flavor will be.<lb />
Care must be exercised when pouring<lb />
a bottle of home brew because of a slight<lb />
amount of harmless sediment that forms<lb />
on the bottom of the bottle. The beer<lb />
should be poured slowly, the entire bottle<lb />
at once, in order not to disturb the bottom<lb />
residue.<lb />
The yeast at the bottom of your crock<lb />
can be scraped out, saved in a tightly<lb />
covered jar and refrigerated for use in your<lb />
next batch. It can be reused several times<lb />
until you feel like buying new yeast.<lb />
Purists also insist the crock and<lb />
bottles should be sterilized with boiling<lb />
water at each use. While the crock should<lb />
be sterilized to prevent bacteria and wild<lb />
yeasts from attacking your beer yeast; the<lb />
bottles need only a good washing in hot<lb />
water, without soap.<lb />
The legality of beer making is<lb />
questionable. A statute in the Internal<lb />
Revenue Code, Section 5222 (a) (2) (B)<lb />
says "No mash, wort or wash fit for<lb />
distillation shall be produced It<lb />
adds that an exception to this prohibition<lb />
will be allowed in the case of an<lb />
"authorized brewery Yet home-brewing<lb />

is already miserable enough?<lb />
There aren't any easy<lb />
answers to these questions-<lb />
even for a Paulist. But he knows<lb />
that today's world desperately<lb />
needs people who are commit-<lb />

search for peace of mind and<lb />
country, happiness, love and<lb />
brotherhood, we are really<lb />
seeking meaning-a reason<lb />
for being.<lb />
The Paulist doesn't feel the<lb />
world is dying; he rejoices in<lb />
the signs of hope around him<lb />
any problems. According to the owner of<lb />
one store in Montana, nobody has ever<lb />
been arrested for making, selling, buying,<lb />

love. Men like the Pulists<lb />

love for Him includes and<lb />

or the parish house, on campus<lb />
or in ghettos . . . whether he<lb />
communicates with the spoken<lb />

Paulist is talking about what<lb />

Intramurals offer chance for involvement<lb />
By BROWNIE WILSON<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
To a great many students at East<lb />
Carolina the intramural sports program on<lb />
campus provides an outlet for recreation<lb />
and a chance to compete in a physical<lb />
activity.<lb />
This is an important part of a college<lb />
student's life because intramurals stress<lb />
participation and involvement for every-<lb />
one, not just those fortunate enough to<lb />
compete in varsity sports.<lb />
According to Dr. Edgar Hooks,<lb />
chairman of the Department of Health and<lb />
Physical Education, the function of the<lb />
intramural sport on campus is to provide<lb />
"an activity for every student and a<lb />
student for every activity<lb />
This is a working idea because this<lb />
year the intramural department offers a<lb />
variety of fifteen sports ranging from<lb />
football to horseshoes. Programs are<lb />
offered for both men and women to<lb />
provide all with a chance to compete.<lb />
John Bobo, student director of men's<lb />
intramurals, has been involved in the<lb />
program for three years. Since that time<lb />
hundreds of students have taken part in<lb />
the sports offered to them. Bobo feels<lb />
that the project will continue to grow and<lb />
prosper with more and more students<lb />
taking an active part.<lb />
"I've seen a change over the past three<lb />

competition associated with intramurals<lb />
said Bobo. "People are becoming more<lb />
reliable with a greater interest in the<lb />
program, there very few forfeits and they<lb />
care more about winning than before<lb />
"Winning is not the most important<lb />
thing of course, but it does help<lb />
stimulate competition pointed out<lb />
Bobo.<lb />
He said the greatest problem facing<lb />
intramural sports is the scheduling of<lb />
events so that they are convenient to the<lb />
most people. This is a problem because<lb />
with classes and studies some nights are<lb />
very hard to work into the schedule.<lb />
Bobo went on to say that more people<lb />
benefit from intramurals than just those<lb />
involved with the sport. Many people<lb />
enjoy coming out and watching their<lb />
friends play, this helps to create a more<lb />
community-like spirit among the partic-<lb />
ipants.<lb />
Intramurals also provide a job<lb />
opportunity to students on campus. Each<lb />
game has student referees to call the<lb />
action, each referee earns $1.80 a game<lb />
said Bobo. There is no charge to compete<lb />
in intramurals but the salary for the<lb />
referees and some of the equipment<lb />
comes from students' fees.<lb />
"Sometimes the officiating isn't the<lb />
best in the games but everyone tries and<lb />
in general the results have been quite<lb />
good said Bobo.<lb />
"The most important thing is to<lb />
remember that intramurals are a form of<lb />
relaxation and exercise, not varsity<lb />
athletics said Bobo. "<lb />
"We want everyone to be involved and<lb />
enjoy themselves, if the intramural<lb />
department fulfills this need, then it will<lb />
be a success<lb />

Why cats purr?<lb />
(CPSZNS)-Doctor Paul Layhausen of the<lb />
Mac Planck Institute in West Germany,<lb />
has been working on a problem that has<lb />
puzzled scientists for centuries: he's<lb />
been trying to find out what makes a cat<lb />
purr, and why.<lb />
Layhausen reported that after studying<lb />
thousands of cats and the purring sounds<lb />
they make, he has discovered purrs are<lb />
very complex habits. Cats, he said,<lb />
usually purr for the same reasons that<lb />
people smile-because they are happy and<lb />
r-p I oy qt<lb />
However, the doctor added that some<lb />
cats use their purrs to wrangel a little<lb />
extra food from unsuspecting humans:<lb />
these felines purr loudly when people are<lb />
around, and are usually awarded for their<lb />
purrs with tasty treats.<lb />
Other cats, Layhausen said, have<lb />
actually developed a kind of "high-class"<lb />
or "snobbish" purr which makes them<lb />
aristocrats among their fellow cats. The<lb />
doctor explained these aristocratic purrs<lb />
are developed to gain attention from<lb />
people when other cats are around. The<lb />
doctor said that when people leave the<lb />
room, however, aristrocratic cats often<lb />
drop their "snobbish" purrs and revert to<lb />
normal purring just to prove to other cats<lb />
that they are really just ordinary felines.<lb />

National Student Association President<lb />
Larry Friedman called for the resignation<lb />
of President Richard M. Nixon on the<lb />
grounds of "moral bankruptcy and mental<lb />
instability<lb />
Friedman noted that while some<lb />
inquiries dealt with the practical matter a<lb />
"surprising majority" asked about the<lb />
rationality of the nation's chief executive.<lb />
According to the student leader, there<lb />
is ample, indeed overwhelming, moral and<lb />
legal basis for a resignation. "It is a bitter<lb />
irony that this administration was elected<lb />
on a platform calling for respect for law<lb />
and its first chief law enforcement officer,<lb />
John Mitchell, is now under multiple<lb />
felony indictment. Mitchell's three<lb />
successors have also been forced to<lb />
resign; Mr. Kleindienst for what he did,<lb />
and Mr. Richardson and Mr. Ruckelshaus<lb />
for what they would not do' Friedman<lb />
Citing the events of last weekend as<lb />
"overwhelming evidence not only of<lb />
defiance of the law, but of mental<lb />
instability as well Friedman said, "there<lb />
has been little doubt until now about the<lb />
skill and intelligence of Nixon the<lb />
politician. But the desperation of the acts<lb />
of last weekend and the predictable<lb />
outrage of the American people leads one<lb />
to question the decision-making ability of<lb />
this once-rational man<lb />
He added, "The most powerful nation<lb />
in the world dare not continue to trust its<lb />
leadership to a chief executive who acts in<lb />
such a peculiar, if not psychologically<lb />
questionable, manner Friedman specu-<lb />
lated that the inexorable course of the<lb />
Watergate investigation coupled with the<lb />
strain of the Middle East war, the energy<lb />
crisis, inflation and other national<lb />
problems, had unbalanced the President.<lb />

Cagers surprise Indians<lb />
By STEVE TOMPKINS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The ECU basketball team defeated<lb />
William and Mary Saturday night 70-67<lb />
and took over second place in the<lb />
conference behind Furman.<lb />
The Pirate's are now 4-2 in the<lb />
conference and 7-6 overall, and have won<lb />
their last three conference games.<lb />
Donnie Owens again was the key spark<lb />
for the Pirate's as he hit all six free throws<lb />
he sho; in the final minute of play to give<lb />
ECU the victory.<lb />
Willian. and Mary, who because of the<lb />
flu and postponements were playing their<lb />
first game since Dec. 22, seemed<lb />
anything but sluggish.<lb />
The Indians out rebounded the Pirates<lb />
42-40, had less turnovers 22-12 but shot<lb />
poorer from the field with 38.5 percent<lb />
compared to ECU'S 45.9 percent.<lb />
In the initial half the lead changed<lb />
hands frequently. Nicky White hit a 15<lb />
foot jump shot and Roger Atkinson hit a<lb />
jumper to give ECU a 15-10 lead, but<lb />
William and Mary quickly closed to 20-19<lb />
on Rod Musselman's shot.<lb />
Robert (Jeter's shot gave the Bucs a<lb />
34-32 halftime lead.<lb />
Nicky White hit a turn around jumper to<lb />
give the Pirates the lead for good at 58-57<lb />
with 6:22 remaining. White followed with<lb />
a three point play, Greg Ashom hit a free<lb />
throw and Owens ended the game with<lb />
his accuracy at the free throw line.<lb />
The Piates were led by White's 16<lb />
points. Atkinson added 14, Geter 12, and<lb />
Buzzy Braman 11. Geter led the Bucs in<lb />
rebounding with 13.<lb />

In the world of track, East Carolina<lb />

his title. The race covered 26 miles, 385<lb />
yards and Hereford's time was 2:24.44,13<lb />
minutes better than his closest<lb />
competitor. For Hereford, the compet-<lb />
ition was another step closer to possibly<lb />
qualifying for the 1976 Olympics.<lb />
"There were 40 competitors from seven<lb />
different states running said Hereford.<lb />
"The course was hilly. I believe I could<lb />
have run under 2:20.00 on a flat course<lb />
According to Hereford, marathon<lb />
runners who break 2:20.00 are of world<lb />

Coach Eric Orders gives two awards to<lb />
his swimmers following each meet. The<lb />
"Gold Award" is given in recognition of<lb />
outstanding performance, and the "Purple<lb />

"I gave the Gold Award to Linda<lb />

"I gave two Purple Awards Orders<lb />
said. "One to Jan Masters for her work in<lb />
the 100-yard IM, 50 and 100 free. And the<lb />
other to Sue Bingham for her diving in the<lb />
one and three-meter events<lb />
Against ODU Beverly Osborn, Smiley,<lb />
Angela Pennine Peggy Toth, and<lb />
Bingham were all double winners. Osborn<lb />
took the 200 and 400-yard freestyle,<lb />
Smiley the 100-yard IM and the 100-yard<lb />
butterfly, Pennino the 50-yard freestyle<lb />
and backstroke, Toth the 50-yard butterfly<lb />
and 100-yard freestyle and Bingham both<lb />
diving events.<lb />
Barbara Strange and Linda Schull<lb />
added depth to the Bucs win over<lb />
ODU. Strange was part of ECU'S<lb />
victorious 200-yard medley relay team,<lb />
and took second place in the 200-yard<lb />
freestyle, 50-yard breastroke, and<lb />
100-yard breastroke. Schull was also on<lb />
the 200-yard medley relay, took first in the<lb />
100-yard backstroke, and second in the<lb />
50-yard backstroke.<lb />
"Both teams had beaten us last year in<lb />

to beat Old Dominion<lb />
"We defeated Carolina in our<lb />

Orders. "That more or less gave us the<lb />

Preparing for this meet was extremely<lb />
difficult for the women.<lb />
"We had four weeks off for Christmas<lb />
without practice Orders commented.<lb />
"That's really like us swimming tw<lb />

Against Carolina, Bingham was the<lb />
lady Bucs lone double winner, taking both<lb />
diving events. Strange won first place in<lb />
the 50-yard breastroke and Toth took first<lb />
in the 50-yard butterfly. ECU'S 200-yard<lb />
freestyle relay team of Pennino, Osborn,<lb />
Toth and Smiley accounted for the final<lb />
Pirate victory.<lb />
Saturday's split gives the ladies a 4-1<lb />
mark on the season, as they had<lb />
previously defeated Appalachian State,<lb />
Duke, and UNC-Greensboro. This leaves<lb />
them with three more meets before the<lb />
Nationals.<lb />
"We are planning to take six people to<lb />
the Nationals said Orders. "They should<lb />

relay was victorious.<lb />
The ship was turned around against<lb />
the Cadets, however, as Army captured 11<lb />
of 13 events from the Pirates. Hadley and<lb />
Morrow were the only winners for East<lb />
Carolina. Hadley captured the 50-yard<lb />
freestyle and Morrow won the one-meter<lb />
diving event.<lb />
A despondent Coach Scharf had very<lb />
few words of praise for his weary<lb />
squad. "It would be quite easy for me to<lb />
blame our poor showing on the long trip,<lb />
but I am not going to do that because we<lb />
have traveled under more adverse<lb />
conditions before and performed much<lb />
better said Scharf.<lb />

Three Trackmen take silver medals<lb />
By STEVE TOMPKINS<lb />
Staff Writer<lb />
The East Coast Track Invitational, with<lb />
an abundance of Olympians and NCAA<lb />
champions on hand, saw East Carolina's<lb />
indoor track take three silver medals and<lb />
UNC's Tony Waldrop set another record.<lb />
The meet on Saturday night was<lb />
sponsored by the Chesterfield Jaycees<lb />
and held in Richmond, Va.<lb />
Sam Phillips, ECU'S outstanding<lb />
hurdler who is fast reaching national<lb />
prominence, took the silver medal in the<lb />
"open" 60 yd. high hurdles. The Open<lb />
events bring together athletes of<lb />
exceptional ability, consequently most of<lb />
the meet's headliners participated in<lb />
them.<lb />
Phillips, with a 7.5 second time just<lb />
missed qualifying for the nationals at 7.3,<lb />
hit the last three hurdles yet still just<lb />
missed bearing William and Mary's<lb />
Charles Dodson who ran 7.4.<lb />
Watson Brown<lb />
joins grid staff<lb />
Watson Brown, former Vanderbilt<lb />
University quarterback and graduate<lb />
assistant coach at Vanderbilt, has been<lb />
added to the staff of new head football<lb />
coach Pat Dye.<lb />
Brown joins three other newcomers<lb />
announced last week: Frank Orgel, Larry<lb />
Norris and Ben Grieb and one holdover<lb />
from the Sonny Randle staff, Henry<lb />
Trevathan, who has been assigned duties<lb />
as assistant head coach.<lb />
Brown is a native of Cookeville, Tenn<lb />
where he played high school football and<lb />
was named to numerous Tennessee<lb />
all-state teams and several prep all-Ameri-<lb />
can teams.<lb />
At Vanderbilt, he won the starting<lb />
quarterback position his sophomore year<lb />
and led the Commodores to their last<lb />
victory to date over Alabama, a nationally<lb />
ranked powerhouse.<lb />
Brown battled injury problems<lb />
throughout his collegiate career but did<lb />
letter for all three seasons. Following his<lb />
days of playing eligibility, he was added<lb />
to the staff of new head coach Steve<lb />
Sloan. This past season, Brown coached<lb />
the defensive backfield and helped with<lb />
the quarterbacks following the completion<lb />
of the Jayvee season.<lb />
"I am really excited about this job here<lb />
at East Carolina Brown said. "I had<lb />
never met Pat Dye until he called about<lb />
the job. I suspect Coach Sloan had<lb />
something to do with me being here. I<lb />
went to Alabama to be interviewed and<lb />
after that, talked to many football people<lb />
who had nothing but good things to say<lb />
about Coach Dye.<lb />
"This is such a fantastic opportunity<lb />
for me because I wanted to start out in<lb />
coaching as a winner. Coach Dye is a<lb />
winner, he has winning ideas and this<lb />
program has already been established as<lb />
a winner.<lb />
"I am very confident about the job<lb />
because I will be coaching a position I<lb />
know the most about (quarterbacks). I am<lb />
very familiar with the option style of<lb />
offense because it is the only thing I have<lb />
ever run.<lb />

Captain of the cricket team.<lb />

"I thought the race was really<lb />
slow. My start was slow and it needs a<lb />
lot of work. When the Conference meet<lb />
rolls around though, Dodson's going to be<lb />
seeing the back of my shirt said<lb />
Phillips.<lb />
Larry Malone, co-captain of the team,<lb />
took the silver in the long jump with a<lb />
leap of 24'2 14<lb />
After having led the competition<lb />
throughout the evening, Malone made the<lb />
finals only to see Hubert West of UNC<lb />
leap 24' 3 11 A" on his first leap.<lb />
Malone fouled on his first two jumps<lb />
in the finals and in trying not to foul on<lb />
his last jump took off too far behind the<lb />
board.<lb />
"I thought the competition was pretty<lb />
tough. I couldn't get everything together<lb />
and fouled on three jumps. On the last<lb />
jump I was trying to concentrate on<lb />
charging the board and not foul. I didn't<lb />
start off as hard as I should and jumped<lb />
way behind the bo?. Before the meet if<lb />

The Lady Tarheels exploded to a 31-20<lb />

women could not close the gap.<lb />
The Pirates had the game's leading<lb />
scorer in Sheilah Cotton who poured in 26<lb />
points.<lb />
The women are now 0-1 as they travel<lb />

you'd asked if I'd be satisfied with 23 feet<lb />
I would have agreed. 24 feet is a pleasant<lb />
surprise<lb />
Malone's jump bettered the old ECU<lb />
indoor mark.<lb />
Gerald Klas took the other silver medal<lb />
in the closely contested college mile.<lb />
Klas hit the tape at the same time as<lb />
Duke's Richard Schwartz but was given<lb />
the silver medal on a judge's<lb />
decision. His time was 4:15.8.<lb />
Tony Waldrop in the invitational mile<lb />
run ran the feature race of the evening,<lb />
breaking the meet record in running a<lb />
fantastic 3:59.5.<lb />
Juris Luzens of the Florida track club<lb />
led until the 1320 mark, when Waldrop<lb />
overtook him with a powerful burst of<lb />
speed which saw him jump out into a ten<lb />
yard lead. Waldrop was not contested in<lb />
the last 200 yards, which leads observers<lb />
to wonder if he had been pressed if he<lb />
could have challenged Jim Ryun's NCAA<lb />
indoor record of 3:58.6 set in 1967.<lb />
Meet director Dr. Joseph Tolerwhen<lb />
interviewed said Waldrop's time was the<lb />
fastest recorded in the world this year<lb />
indoors.<lb />
Track and Field News, the Bible of the<lb />
sport of track, has said Waldrop should<lb />
dominate the college mile this year, and<lb />
his performance in Richmond certainly<lb />
added credence to that statement.<lb />
Though not winning medals several<lb />
other Pirates competed and performed<lb />
well.<lb />
Art Miller cleared 14' in the pole vault<lb />
and just missed on his last try to clear<lb />
14'6 Palmer Lisane ran a fine 600 yd.<lb />
dash and the best leg on the mile relay.<lb />
Ariah Johnson made the final in the 60<lb />
yd. dash as did Bill McRee in the 60 yd.<lb />
college hurdles. Tom Watson and Ivey<lb />
Peacock threw 46'5" and 447" respectively<lb />
in the shotput.<lb />
The Pirates travel to Chapel Hill this<lb />
week to take on several area teams at<lb />
UNC's fieldhouse.<lb />
Special nights planned<lb />
East Carolina University Athletic<lb />
Department officials have taken a unique<lb />
approach to attract new fans to Pirate<lb />
home basketball games this winter.<lb />
According to Sports Information<lb />
Director John Evenson, plans have been<lb />
made to accomodate certain groups or<lb />
individuals at reduced rates for specially<lb />
designated games. These "special<lb />
nights" will be in effect for eight of East<lb />
Carolina's remaining nine home games.<lb />
"The purpose of these special nights<lb />
is to give a wide cross-section of people a<lb />
real bargain in sports entertainment<lb />
said Evenson, "and, hopefully, to attract<lb />
prospective fans from throughout eastern<lb />
North Carolina who have not attended<lb />
Pirate basketball games in the past. Once<lb />
they see the calibre of basketball played<lb />
in the Southern Conference, we feel they<lb />
will come back many times<lb />
The first of these special nights took<lb />
place Monday, Jan. 14, when East<lb />
Carolina hosted conference rival Appala-<lb />
chian State in Minges Coliseum. For that<lb />
game and two other home games later in<lb />
the season (Jan. 28 vs. Furman and Feb.<lb />
23 vs. The Citadel), the price of tickets for<lb />
any group or organization of 25 persons or<lb />
less was set at $25. Larger groups are<lb />
charged one dollar for each additional<lb />
person. The normal ticket price for ECU'S<lb />
home basketball games is $2.50.<lb />
Also planned, according to Evenson,<lb />
are "family nights "ladies' night" and<lb />
"team night On family nights (Jan. 23<lb />
vs. St. Peter's, Feb. 6 vs. Buffalo State<lb />
and Feb. 20 vs. Richmond), any family of<lb />
four or more can purchase seats together<lb />
for one dollar per person.<lb />
"Ladies' night" is scheduled for Jan.<lb />
26, when East Carolina hosts Virginia<lb />
Military Institute, and all ladies<lb />
accompanied by a paying spectator or not<lb />
will be admitted free.<lb />
On "team night" (Feb. 9 vs. William &<lb />
Mary), any organized school athletic team<lb />
under supervision will be admitted free'as<lb />
a group.<lb />
"Our ultimate goal is to fill all of<lb />
Minges Coliseum's 6,500 seats for every<lb />
home game says Evenson. "That would<lb />
be the type fan interest we need for our<lb />
program to reach the level we are striving<lb />
, for<lb />
