Summer Music Camp<lb />

in presently underway with<lb />
approximately 250 students<lb />
from junior and senior high<lb />
schools on the east coast.<lb />
The students have a rigorous<lb />
schedule that begins at 6:30<lb />
a.m and ends at 10:30 pin.<lb />
with lights out<lb />
From � a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m.<lb />
the students are involved in<lb />
both music class and practice.<lb />
The students are free from 3<lb />
to 5 p.m. tor recreation.<lb />
NEGATIVE COMMENTS<lb />
Evenings are usually busy<lb />
with auditions lor different<lb />
LMotips including a stage band.<lb />
movies at Wright uditorium,<lb />
recitals and concerts.<lb />
Uthough these students are<lb />
the best in then classes, it Vvas<lb />
rathei surprising to find that<lb />
many of them were not music<lb />
majors.<lb />
Many of the students thought<lb />
the food was very bad and they<lb />
disliked the restrictions.<lb />
One giil complained about<lb />
the curfew rules and the fact<lb />
that the students could not ride<lb />
in cars or leave the campus.<lb />
Another rule, that the<lb />
students must wear shoes and<lb />
identification pins, received<lb />
criticism.<lb />
SATISFACTION<lb />
The negative comments were<lb />
in the minority, howevei Mosl<lb />
students weie satisfied with the<lb />
camp.<lb />
The most favorable<lb />
comments- concerned the<lb />
instructors lhe students said<lb />
the instructors seemed to care<lb />
and weie understanding<lb />
The music camp will hold its<lb />

The raid on the Forbes Street<lb />
house in which the men resided<lb />
was made at 11:25 a.m. by a<lb />
joint city-county-state drug<lb />
investigating unit.<lb />
Two men. Charles A.<lb />
Capillary, 22. and David S.<lb />
Overman. 22. were taken into<lb />
custody on the scene. The third<lb />
man. Larry M. Ellis. 23. was<lb />
arrested later that afternoon.<lb />
Each man was placed under<lb />
S5000 bond. They were each<lb />
charged with illegal possession<lb />
of marijuana and illegal<lb />
possession of LSD.<lb />
The date for a preliminary<lb />
hearing in District Court was set<lb />

The drugs found and<lb />
confiscated included 302 tablets<lb />
of LSD and approximately five<lb />
pounds of marijuana. In<lb />
addition, 77 capsules believed to<lb />

along with THEIR NAMES, for<lb />
our own subversive purposes,<lb />
and refused to sign it, although<lb />
they agreed with what it said.<lb />

use it for SOMETHING"<lb />
remarked one suspicious young<lb />
man after we explained that it<lb />
was only for a survey; and that<lb />
their names would not be given<lb />
to the SBI, or the<lb />
administration, or anyone else.<lb />
Then a young lady said. "I'm<lb />
afraid someone will get ahold of<lb />
itI'm scared they'll think I'm<lb />
some kind of militant<lb />
Another said. "I won't sign<lb />
i t I'm skeptical I'm<lb />
apiehensive of this whole<lb />
place<lb />

interviewed didn't agree with<lb />
the ideas in the petition. They<lb />
thought tha. the part about the<lb />
right and duty to overthrow<lb />
abusive government (we<lb />
explained it was "throw off" in<lb />
the text) was too drastic and<lb />
radical.<lb />
A couple of argumentative<lb />
freshmen tried to pin us down<lb />
into a discussion of the<lb />
principles set forth in the<lb />
Declaration and whether or not<lb />
they could be applied today.<lb />
On the other hand, many<lb />
others expressed the opinion<lb />
that the Declaration is unclear.<lb />
"It doesn't say anything it's a<lb />
bunch of nothing said one<lb />
young man.<lb />
Of course the typical and<lb />
expected Apathetic Bloc was<lb />
present. About one fifth of the<lb />
freshmen turned away<lb />
unconcerned. One young man.<lb />
asked why he was leaving, said<lb />
"I don't like to commit<lb />
myself<lb />
Now all you upperclassmen<lb />
have a small sampling of the<lb />
views of our incoming freshmen.<lb />
What benefit you will gain, I do<lb />
not know. Maybe you should<lb />
pull out that old Declaration<lb />
and read it sometime.<lb />

leaving the love Valley Rock<lb />
festival. 1 met a reporter from<lb />
the Twin Forks Junction Daily<lb />
News Journal Express. We were<lb />
both caught in slow moving<lb />
traffic, and decided to pull o'(<lb />
to the side of the road and relax<lb />
lor a while in hopes that the<lb />
situation would improve.<lb />
"Elmer G an tree is the name<lb />
said the man. extending his<lb />
hand. I introduced myself and<lb />
complemented Mr. Gantree on<lb />
his line air conditioned<lb />
Oldsmobile and his sanforized<lb />
yellow plaid sports coat<lb />
�'Well thank you. I wanted to<lb />
weal something different so I<lb />
would look more like the kids<lb />
he said. "That's why 1 wore this<lb />
pink and green silk tie too. I was<lb />
going to wear my wife's wig, but<lb />
that might have been too<lb />
much<lb />
I agteed that he made a wise<lb />
decision, and after exchanging<lb />
more small talk, we compared<lb />
notes on the festival.<lb />

"You stayed here that<lb />
just to write a story on<lb />

I admitted that I had.<lb />
"Boy, let me give you some<lb />
helpful advice about covering<lb />

there was to cover an event than<lb />

For instance you know that all<lb />
the hippies are going to be<lb />
there. It's also good policy to<lb />
say the music was loud. That<lb />
creates an authentic feel like<lb />
you were really there<lb />
I told him that it seemed to<lb />
me that there were more<lb />
straight, short-haired,<lb />
beer-drinking people at Love<lb />
Valley than long hairs, and that<lb />
the music, although loud, was<lb />
pretty much second rate and<lb />
horing.<lb />
"That might be true, my boy.<lb />
but you're not going to make a<lb />
n<lb />
good reporter if you clutter up<lb />
youi articles with that kind of<lb />
information Mr. Gantree said.<lb />
"People don't want to read<lb />
about beer drinking. They want<lb />
to read about hippies. You got<lb />
to give the people what they<lb />
want to read. That's the<lb />
democratic way<lb />
I assured Mr. Gantree that I<lb />
certainly didn't want to be<lb />
undemocratic.<lb />
"I'm just trying to help you<lb />
out. son. and show you the right<lb />
way to do things. Now another<lb />
thing the people want to read<lb />
about is how badly the whole-<lb />
thing turns out. So you make up<lb />
"You must be new<lb />
a spapei business<lb />

ickled. "Why. everyone<lb />
nows about the standard rules<lb />
in festival coverage<lb />
I admitted my ignorance, but<lb />

a headline saying the whole<lb />
thing was a mess, and then in<lb />
the first few paragraphs of your<lb />
story, you report all the bad<lb />
things. In order to keep your<lb />
readers interested, you say some<lb />
of the hippies were nude. People<lb />
like to read about the nude<lb />
body, or think about what it<lb />
must have been like to see all<lb />
kinds of girls with no bras on.<lb />
They also like to read about<lb />
drugs, so you say all the hippies<lb />
were using all sorts of illegal<lb />
drugs. After these introductory<lb />
statements, you should say<lb />
something about how mad the<lb />
local people are about all the<lb />
hippies. This also gives your<lb />
story an on-the-spot feeling. It's<lb />
a good idea to say some of the<lb />
hippies were arrested. Readers<lb />
like to think that ther's law and<lb />
order, and no real danger ofthe<lb />
hippies taking over<lb />
1 admitted to Mr. Gantree<lb />
that 1 was planning on writing<lb />
about how bonng the whole<lb />
event was. about how<lb />
everybody came expecting some<lb />
big name groups who never<lb />
showed up. and about how-<lb />

While torrents of rain fell<lb />
Thursday evening, hundreds<lb />
squeezed into Wright<lb />
Auditorium to watch the First<lb />
Edition perform. Originally<lb />
scheduled as an outdoor concert,<lb />
the performance was an<lb />
outstanding success despite the<lb />
inclement weather.<lb />
Known for its remarkably<lb />
poor acoustics. Wright<lb />
Auditorium did not deter the<lb />
First Edition from giving the<lb />
audience an enjoyable evening.<lb />
While the group eased through<lb />
their songs interspersed with<lb />
some refreshingly original<lb />
humor, members of the<lb />
audience sat on the floor, lined<lb />
the walls, and generally tried to<lb />
get as comfortable as the<lb />
facilities allow. At the end of<lb />
the performance, however,<lb />
everyone left feeling that they<lb />
had been treated to a night of<lb />
fun. For, if anything<lb />
characterized the concert, it was<lb />
a feeling that all appreciated the<lb />
change from �heavy"<lb />
self-conscious entertainers to<lb />
ones who were relaxed and<lb />
enjoyed their work.<lb />
DOWN-HOME FEELING<lb />
The music had a down-home<lb />
feeling that spoke of good times<lb />
and bad times. There were<lb />
melodies f love and there were<lb />
hand-clapping, sing-along gospel<lb />
numbers. From the beginning to<lb />
the end. the First Edition had<lb />
the audience in the palms of<lb />
candidates and parties would<lb />

In) the audience gave a<lb />
well-earned standing ovation.<lb />

Though the streets outside<lb />
were covered with water and the<lb />
opportunity to enjoy a concert<lb />
seated in the grass was lost, the<lb />

out-of-doors, there was too<lb />
