SCHOFIELD AND OWENS<lb />
VIE FOR SGA PRESIDENCY<lb />
Dear Fellow Students:<lb />
As election time draws near,<lb />
it is time for you, the students<lb />
of East Carolina University, to<lb />
evaluate each candidate and<lb />
make a responsible choice.<lb />
Since the movements of<lb />
government are very intricate,<lb />
you must not be apathetic or<lb />
indifferent, but make a definite<lb />
decision on the candidate that<lb />
you think is responsible and can<lb />
best serve your interest. It is<lb />
your Student Government<lb />
Association; take pride in it and<lb />
make it a more effective<lb />
organization to serve you, the<lb />
majority, not the minority elite.<lb />
Let us discuss a few<lb />
pertinent issues. In order for<lb />
this University to become a<lb />
more modern and productive<lb />
educational institution, it is<lb />
necessary to establish student<lb />
membership on all academic<lb />
and administrative committees.<lb />
I feel that this is necessary so<lb />
that the growing ne 's of the<lb />
students of this University will<lb />
have a voice in formulating and<lb />
working with the committees in<lb />
order that the students receive<lb />
the maximum from this<lb />
University.<lb />
11 is also necessary to<lb />
eliminate many handicaps to<lb />
the students and faculty by<lb />
revamping pre-registration; also<lb />
to have the SGA subsidize all<lb />
postage fees whereby all class<lb />
schedules will be mailed out to<lb />
each student rather than have<lb />
the student spend endi ss hours<lb />
picking it up. These are both<lb />
essential matters in updating<lb />
our University to better serve<lb />
and benefit the students.<lb />
It has been mentioned in the<lb />
past that there be a reading day<lb />
prior to all final examinations.<lb />
This I intend to make a reality.<lb />
I believe that you, the students,<lb />
would be better students and<lb />
also have better grades with one<lb />
day donated exclusively for<lb />
study. I also plan to have the<lb />
system of closed stu'ly for<lb />
freshman women investigated as<lb />
to the possible abolishment of<lb />
it.<lb />
I feel also that there arc<lb />
some things that should be<lb />
done for the monetary benefit<lb />
of all students. I plan to see the<lb />
reduction of the price of<lb />
student date tickets for<lb />
entertainment events and to<lb />
investigate the possibilities of<lb />
doing the same thing for<lb />
athletic events. I also plan to<lb />
see an increased subsidy for the<lb />
student loan fund so that more<lb />
students will be able to borrow<lb />
more money.<lb />
It will also be the purpose of<lb />
the SGA to initiate a tutorial<lb />
program where we will oversee<lb />
the bringing together of<lb />
students and tutor; also to<lb />
include a remedial studies<lb />
program. These will be for the<lb />
improvement and benefit of<lb />
any students who need these<lb />
services.<lb />
It is also my wish to<lb />
investigate the possibilities of<lb />
the creation of an<lb />
Afro American Studies<lb />
program. This will be<lb />
investigated thoroughly to<lb />
insure a program that will be of<lb />
the utmost benefit to all. Also,<lb />
it is my hope to initiate a plan<lb />
wherby all of the utmost<lb />
benefit to all. Also, it is my<lb />
hope to initiate a plan whereby<lb />
all<lb />
Space does not permit me to<lb />
discuss all of my plans. So I<lb />
have mentioned only the most<lb />
important. I will appreciate<lb />
your support and if elected, my<lb />
door is always open to you, my<lb />
constituents. I will try to serve<lb />
you in the betterment of East<lb />
Carolina University and your<lb />
SGA.<lb />
Thank you,<lb />
John Schofield<lb />
University Party<lb />
Candidate for President<lb />
Supporting letter for<lb />
John Schofield, cand-<lb />
idate for Presidency<lb />
Dear Fellow Students:<lb />
In the election next Tuesday<lb />
when we, the students of East<lb />
Carolina University, choose the<lb />
executive officers of the<lb />
Student Government<lb />
Association, we will be making<lb />
very important and far-reaching<lb />
decisions. For this reason I feel<lb />
it is very necessary that I<lb />
emphasize the importance of<lb />
the office of the President of<lb />
the Student Government, and<lb />
once again give the students the<lb />
outstanding qualification of<lb />
John Schofield for this office.<lb />
John is a history-political<lb />
science double major and urban<lb />
planning minor. I feel John<lb />
Schofield is highly interested in<lb />
helping East Carolina University<lb />
advance in any way possible.<lb />
John has shown this in his<lb />
continued efforts to represent<lb />
East Carolina University. This<lb />
past year he has server!<lb />
outstandingly as Secretary of<lb />
External Affairs. During John's<lb />
tenure. East Carolina attended<lb />
more conferences than any year<lb />
ever before. John's excellent<lb />
planning and co-ordination of<lb />
the delegations to these<lb />
conferences has greatly<lb />
increased our school's<lb />
reputation. I cannot emphasize<lb />
enough the competent job John<lb />
has done as Secretary of<lb />
External Affairs this past year.<lb />
For four years John<lb />
Schofield has been a delegate to<lb />
the State Student Legislature.<lb />
At these conferences he has<lb />
exhibited the type of leadership<lb />
required of the President of the<lb />
Student Government<lb />
Association. This year John<lb />
Schofield went as Chairman of<lb />
I asl Carolina's delegation to<lb />
SSL, and he led our delegation<lb />
to bring back the two most<lb />
outstanding awards, Best<lb />
Delegation and Best Bill Awards<lb />
for 1969. These honors show<lb />
the leadership ability of John<lb />
Schofield, and John is willing to<lb />
put all his abilities and energies<lb />
to work for the students of East<lb />
Carolina University as their<lb />
IS.G.A. executive officers<lb />
woman's judiciary, and<lb />
marshals will be chosen for the<lb />
next year in Tuesday's election<lb />
All poles will be open from<lb />
8:30 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. except<lb />
those in the Pamlico Room<lb />
lobby and the lobby of North<lb />
Cafeteria which will be open<lb />
until 6:30 p.m.<lb />
Candidates for offices of the<lb />
SGA will be as follows:<lb />
President John<lb />
Schofield,UP. Steve Owens, S.P<lb />
Vice-president Bob Whitley<lb />
S.P Brian Van Dercook, UP.<lb />
Secretary Carolyn<lb />
Breedlove, U.P. Peggy Sledd,<lb />
S.P.<lb />
Treasurer- Steve Sharpe, S.P.<lb />
Gary Gasperini, UP<lb />
Historian- Chris Smith, U.P<lb />
Sip Beamon, S.P. Marion Barick,<lb />
Independent<lb />
Members of Women's<lb />
Judiciary will also be elected.<lb />
Eleven of the thirty-five who<lb />
have applied will be chosen.<lb />
They will consist of two seniors,<lb />
two juniors, two sophomores,<lb />
and five members at large.<lb />
Marshalls will be elected from<lb />
a field of thirty. Sixteen will be<lb />
elected with the next two with<lb />
the highest number of votes<lb />
acting as alternates.<lb />
Dan Summers, elections<lb />
chairman, said he was<lb />
"extremely pleased with the<lb />
response of the number of<lb />
people who have filed for<lb />
offices<lb />
Summers also added that<lb />
there would be an election<lb />
official riding around campus<lb />
with a megaphone urging people<lb />
to vote.<lb />
SGA President.<lb />
John Schofield is not<lb />
running for the office of<lb />
President without<lb />
qualifications; neither is he<lb />
running without plans and<lb />
goals. John wants to investigate<lb />
the merit of the present closed<lb />
study system used for freshmen<lb />
girls. John anticipates working<lb />
with the Women's Residence<lb />
Council, Dr. George Weigand,<lb />
and other officials in finding<lb />
out for the girls of East<lb />
Carolina whether or not closed<lb />
study is to their advantage.<lb />
John also wants to<lb />
modernize the pre registration<lb />
system, and I am sure such<lb />
efforts would be appreciated by<lb />
every student and advisor at<lb />
East Carolina. John wants a<lb />
charier; to tiy to remedy<lb />
everyone's big "gripe" about<lb />
pre registration.<lb />
Along the same line, John<lb />
hopes to initiate an open day<lb />
for drop add in which classes<lb />
will not be held. During the<lb />
open day, students wishing to<lb />
drop or add courses would be<lb />
aided in knowing what courses<lb />
were open and closed by closed<lb />
circuit television. John also has<lb />
the student's benefit in mind<lb />
when he anticipates having our<lb />
class schedules mailed to us<lb />
rather than having to pick them<lb />
up on registration day.<lb />
Yes, these are the<lb />
qualifications which make John<lb />
Schofield the man for President<lb />
of our Student Government<lb />
Association in 1969 1970. As<lb />
you can see, John does have<lb />
plans for our Student<lb />
Government, and above all, he<lb />
is willing to work very<lb />
diligently to aid in the<lb />
continued advancement of our<lb />
growing school. If you want a<lb />
Student Government President<lb />
who will be willing to talk to<lb />
you about your problems and<lb />
ideas and who has dynamic<lb />
plans for our next college year,<lb />
I feel you must cast you vote<lb />
on Tuesday for John Schofield.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Phyllis Watson<lb />

of Broughton High School. am<lb />

member of Phi Kappa Tau<lb />

Drop add Complaints<lb />
Q: Many students have<lb />
complained about the<lb />
pre registration and drop a'<lb />
system here at East Carolina.<lb />
What is your program for<lb />
dealing with this?<lb />
A: Preregistration at ECU is<lb />
certainly an archaic system. It<lb />
should not take as much time as<lb />
it doe<lb />
I propose a drop add system<lb />
modeled after the political<lb />
science departments setup<lb />
Under this program, one<lb />
professor handles the entire<lb />
procedure for all the students in<lb />
the department. This eliminates<lb />
the problem of having to waste<lb />
time lookmg for youi advisor<lb />
Q: How do you feel about<lb />
the present student loan<lb />
program?<lb />
A: Under the present system<lb />
a student can borrow a<lb />
maximum of $25.00 for only a<lb />
short period of time. I would<lb />
like to see this increased, but it<lb />
will depend on the budget.<lb />
Black Studies<lb />
Q: What do you think of the<lb />
black student's demands for<lb />
campus reform?<lb />
A: I have been working hard<lb />
for the creation of a black<lb />
Studies program here at ECU<lb />
Also, I agree with the hiring of<lb />
black professors, provided they<lb />
are qualified.<lb />
Some of the demands cannot<lb />
be instituted by ECU, however.<lb />
For example, the demand to<lb />
(continued on paK 3)<lb />
M.imIi ;<lb />
alSe maintenan<lb />
supervisory posi<lb />

Also, the<lb />

I'm all for an<lb />

program here at ECU.<lb />
agree with the hiring of<lb />
rofessors, provided they<lb />
ified.<lb />
a of the demands cannot<lb />
tuted by ECU, however.<lb />
ample, the demand to<lb />

, maintenance workers to<lb />
supervisory positions. This is<lb />
handled by the N.C State Civil<lb />
Service Commission, and we<lb />
have no control over them.<lb />
AS0 the demand that<lb />
black students recruit black<lb />
students under the same<lb />
conditions as the present<lb />
recruitment program for white<lb />
students" is unethical.<lb />
I'm all for an African studies<lb />
program, but I'm afraid grave<lb />
problems are going to be<lb />
encountered in finding qualified<lb />
professors.<lb />
Q What are your plans for<lb />
the Men's Residence Council<lb />
and the Women's Residence<lb />
Council?<lb />
A I would like to see a<lb />
representative from each of<lb />
these organizations on the<lb />
executive council of the<lb />
Student Government<lb />
Association. This would<lb />
increase communications<lb />
between these three bodies (the<lb />
SGA, MRC, and WRC), which is<lb />
currently lacking.<lb />
It is also my wish to<lb />
investigate the possibilities of<lb />
the creation of an<lb />
Ad o American Studies<lb />
program. This will be<lb />
investigated thoroughly to<lb />
insure a program that will be of<lb />
the utmost benefit to all. Also,<lb />
it is my hope to initiate a plan<lb />
whereby all of the laundry<lb />
transactions on the "Hill" shall<lb />
be done in Belk Dorm.<lb />
Curfew Hours<lb />
0 Do you plan to change<lb />
the women's curfew hours?<lb />
A: If elected. I plan to have<lb />
a poll taken to see how many<lb />
Regional Development<lb />
Q Do you have any special<lb />
off campus programs for<lb />
developing the region of<lb />
Eastern North Carolina?<lb />
A: Yes. I would like to see<lb />
the education department offer<lb />
a few senior graduate courses in<lb />
teaching illiterate adults how to<lb />
read and write.<lb />
Much concern has been<lb />
generated over the poor blacks<lb />
and whites in this region who<lb />
cannot read or write, or even<lb />
count money. They are left to<lb />
the mercy of the merchants,<lb />
who have sometimes exploited<lb />
them. Under the adult literacy<lb />
program, this problem could be<lb />
greatly diminished.<lb />
Q: Could you summarise the<lb />
main course of action that the<lb />
SGA would take under your<lb />
leadership?<lb />
A: Yes. I would try to get<lb />
the SGA involved in more<lb />
activities, both on and off<lb />
campus. It should look outward<lb />
as well as inward, to make for a<lb />
bigger and better ECU.<lb />
Steve Owens is a junior<lb />
majoring in business<lb />
administration. He is running<lb />
for SGA president on the<lb />
Student Party ticket.<lb />
Q: Steve, could you give us<lb />
some information about<lb />
yourself, such as hometown,<lb />
clubs and organizations, etc.?<lb />
A: I'm originally from<lb />
Plymouth, but currently live in<lb />
Greenville. I'm on the<lb />
Executive Committee of the<lb />
Student Party, a member of<lb />
Kappa Alpha social fraternity,<lb />
and a member of Phi Beta<lb />
Lambda business fraternity.<lb />
STEVEN OWENS<lb />
women really want to change<lb />
the curfew hours. Then we will<lb />
proceed from there.<lb />
Q How do you intend to<lb />
deal wth the campus<lb />
publicatk i ,?<lb />
A First, I would like to see<lb />
the "Course Guide" greatly<lb />
expanded. Last year there was<lb />
lst not enough coverage.<lb />
Second, I am well pleased<lb />
Wth the new quality of "The<lb />
East Carolinian" and hope to<lb />
e it published three times per<lb />
week in the near future.<lb />
Ttl"d. I think the "Rebel" is<lb />
iln excellent publication even<lb />
though I'm no poetry critic. It<lb />
Wll! continue to receive backing<lb />
support from the SGA if I<lb />
am elected<lb />
My career ambition is to<lb />
attend Carolina Law School.<lb />
Q What are some major<lb />
points in your program if<lb />
elected?<lb />
Pep Band<lb />
A I would like to have a<lb />
Spirit Committee Cheerleader, a<lb />
pep band for the basketball<lb />
games, and expand the External<lb />
Affairs Office to include more<lb />
students.<lb />
Also something needs to be<lb />
done with drop add. A lot of<lb />
students have griped about this,<lb />
and it seems to be a big<lb />
problem at this school.<lb />
Q How do you feel about<lb />
the black students' demands for<lb />
campus reform?<lb />
A: Black students should<lb />
have the right to express their<lb />
opinions. I don't agree with the<lb />
way they are going about these<lb />
demands, however.<lb />
I think that financial aid<lb />
should be given to the black<lb />
students, and maybe a black<lb />
studies program should be<lb />
looked into. I don't see<lb />
anything wrong with hiring<lb />
black professors, as long as they<lb />
are qualified.<lb />
Keep "Dixie"<lb />
Also, "Dixie" should not be<lb />
banned. To me, "Dixie" is an<lb />
emotional song about the<lb />
South, and has nothing to do<lb />
with slavery. The blacks should<lb />
be able to keep their songs and<lb />
culture if they want to.<lb />
Q: How do you feel about<lb />
black supervisors in<lb />
Maintenance Department?<lb />
A: Well, you have to have<lb />
supervisors, and I don't care if<lb />
they are black, as long as they<lb />
are qualified. Higher wages are<lb />
up to the administration, not<lb />
the SGA.<lb />
Q: Do you have any plan to<lb />
change drop add and<lb />
pre registration?<lb />
A: Yes. Professors should be<lb />
required to stay in their offices<lb />
more hours than they do now.<lb />
One of the main problems now<lb />
is chasing professors all over<lb />
campus for class cards, forms,<lb />
etc.<lb />
Also, I think we should have<lb />
a uniform procedure for<lb />
dropping courses in all the<lb />
departments. This would not<lb />
permit various departments to<lb />
set up different precedures<lb />
from the rest of the school,<lb />
such as the business department<lb />
has done.<lb />
Change Curfew<lb />
Q: What do you think about<lb />
the present women's curfew<lb />
hours?<lb />
A: There should be some<lb />
restrictions on the freshmen<lb />
and sophomores. But the<lb />
juniors and seniors should be<lb />
able to set their own hours,<lb />
with parental permission.<lb />
Q: What is your opinion of<lb />
campus publications?<lb />
A: I think they are all pretty<lb />
good. I would like to see a<lb />
column established in "The<lb />
East Carolinian" to let the<lb />
students know what is going on<lb />
in the SGA.<lb />
At the present time I have<lb />
no program for the "Rebel"<lb />
and "Key If they can show<lb />
that they need an increase in<lb />
the budget, and the money is<lb />
available, it will be increased.<lb />

To the students:<lb />
Election time has once again<lb />
come upon ECU, giving<lb />
students the opportunity to<lb />
express their desires as to the<lb />
type of government they want<lb />
for their campus. This is a very<lb />
necessary function in a<lb />
student's career. The SGA<lb />
spends approximately one<lb />
quarter of a million dollars of<lb />
the students' money for various<lb />
projects. This alone is a very<lb />
qood reason why each student<lb />
should show interest in his own<lb />
welfare and vote. The executive<lb />
officers can only be a product<lb />
of those who elect them.<lb />
Too often the SGA has been<lb />
thought of as a "do nothing-<lb />
organization. Promises are made<lb />
at election time, and for some<lb />
reason they are lost during the<lb />
year. Both parties must take the<lb />
responsibility for this. What is<lb />
needed to insure action is a<lb />
strong two-party system. The<lb />
Student Party is pledged to do<lb />
its part to make a strong<lb />
two-party system.<lb />
During the past year the<lb />
University Party has completely<lb />
dominated the Student<lb />
Legislature and controlled four<lb />
out of five executive offices.<lb />
Our position in the Student<lb />
Legislature has been greatly<lb />
handicapped by our inability to<lb />
oppose legislation which we felt<lb />
was being pushed through. The<lb />
leaders of the University Party<lb />
have not been forced to carry<lb />
through with their promises.<lb />
If I am elected I will<lb />
maintain good communications<lb />
between the SGA and the<lb />
student body. I would like to<lb />
establish a permanent column<lb />
in "The East Carolinian" to<lb />
inform the students of the<lb />
activities in the executive<lb />
branch.<lb />
I also hope to expand the<lb />
functions of the External<lb />
Affairs office to include<lb />
activities which will be<lb />
beneficial to more students.<lb />
During the past year, I<lb />
served on the Spirit Committee<lb />
as a cheerleader and have<lb />
realized the importance of spirit<lb />
to our teams. I hope to work in<lb />
cooperation with the athletic<lb />
department and SGA in<lb />
establishing a Pep Band for all<lb />
basketball games.<lb />
The Student Party platform<lb />
this year offers many needed<lb />
changes. Some of the most<lb />
outstanding are: (1) to extend<lb />
library hours and to provide<lb />
better service during these<lb />
hours, (2) to establish a<lb />
uniform procedure for dropping<lb />
a course, and (3) during<lb />
drop add and pre-registration all<lb />
instructors should be required<lb />
to be in their offices from 8<lb />
a.m. to 5 p.m. except during<lb />
classes and lunch hours. Also<lb />
included in the platform is (4)<lb />
the establishment of<lb />
student-faculty committees in<lb />
every department. We must<lb />
have these corrections with<lb />
such a fast growing student<lb />
body.<lb />
All these goals cannot be<lb />
met by the President alone. The<lb />
Student Party is offering the<lb />
best possible slate of<lb />
candidates. We are all dedicated<lb />
to carrying out the Student<lb />
Party platform. Bob Whitley,<lb />
Vice-President; Peggy Sledd,<lb />
Secretary; Steve Sharpe,<lb />
Treasurer; and Sip Beamon,<lb />
Historian, are all anxious to<lb />
develop a new enthusiasm for<lb />
student government on this<lb />
campus. Knowing each of them<lb />
as I do, I feel we can work<lb />
together for an SGA that each<lb />
student can be proud of.<lb />
The objectives which I have<lb />
proposed will be achieved<lb />
during the coming year;<lb />
however, certain problems exist<lb />
which must be solved in the<lb />
near future. The recent<lb />
demands of the Negro students<lb />
have caused much discussion. I<lb />
feel that some of these<lb />
demands, such as a proposed<lb />
black studies program and more<lb />
financial aid for Negro students,<lb />
are reasonable and can be met.<lb />
However, I disagree with the<lb />
proposals to ban "Dixie" and<lb />
remove Confederate flags from<lb />
buildings. I also feel that the<lb />
way to find progress is not in<lb />
demanding, but rather in<lb />
compromising.<lb />
Another problem is tne<lb />
proposed campus transit<lb />
system. The system is an<lb />
excellent idea and is needed at<lb />
East Carolina. However, the<lb />
system proposed by the<lb />
University Party lacks insight<lb />
into the needs of the students.<lb />
More than three buses will be<lb />
needed during the peak rush<lb />
hours to serve the students. Day<lb />
students should not be force to<lb />
finance a transportation system<lb />
which will not benefit them.<lb />
These and many other problems<lb />
in the system mi. be taken<lb />
care of before the SGA spends<lb />
$4800 for the trial period of<lb />
fifteen days of service.<lb />
These are just some of the<lb />
problems which will be faced<lb />
next year. I am confident that<lb />
with new leadership by the<lb />
Student Party, we can arrive at<lb />
successful conclusions. I ask for<lb />
your support, not only for<lb />
myself, but for all the Student<lb />
Party. Together we can build a<lb />
better SGA. I hope you will<lb />
consider each of the Student<lb />
Party candidates, and use your<lb />
vote on Tuesday, March 25.<lb />
Thank you,<lb />
Steve Owens<lb />
Supporting Steven Owens<lb />
To the students,<lb />
It has been my pleasure to<lb />
know Steve Owens, Student<lb />
Party candidate for President of<lb />
the SGA, for three years. We<lb />
first met when I was a hall<lb />
proctor in Jones Dormitory,<lb />
and Steve was a freshman. Steve<lb />
qu.ckly showed his ability by<lb />
obtaining a 2.8 average in his<lb />
first year while many of his<lb />
friends on the hall flunked out.<lb />
Steve always seemed to be able<lb />
to study when it was time to<lb />
study and enjoy the many card<lb />
games when he had time. He<lb />
soon got the reputation on the<lb />
hall as a leader and a "good<lb />
guv<lb />
Since that time, three years<lb />
ago, Steve has continued to<lb />
show his leadership ability and<lb />
enthusiasm for East Carolina.<lb />
He has been the ECU Pirate this<lb />
past year as well as a regular<lb />
member of the cheering squad.<lb />
He is a member of Phi Beta<lb />
Lambda business fraternity and<lb />
Kappa Alpha Order. In Kappa<lb />
Alpha, Steve has been an IFC<lb />
Representative, Athletic<lb />
Chairman, member of the<lb />
Prudential Committee, and is<lb />
presently serving as Treasurer.<lb />
He has worked with Summer<lb />
Orientation and is currently on<lb />
the Executive Committee of the<lb />
Student Party. After all this, he<lb />
has still maintained a good<lb />
average.<lb />
However, all this does not<lb />
tell you about Steve Owens as<lb />
an individual. Steve has the<lb />
kind of personality and drive<lb />
that a good SGA President must<lb />
have. Steve has had to work<lb />
each summer in a paper mill<lb />
just to be able to attend school.<lb />
He is not one to slide out of<lb />
work but accepts it and does an<lb />
outstanding job. I feel this<lb />
speaks for the type of character<lb />
Steve Owens has and is able tc<lb />
convey to others.<lb />
Thank you,<lb />

STUDENT GOVERNMENT<lb />
4<lb />
i<lb />
K<lb />
treasurer<lb />
Fellow Voter,<lb />
A concerned voter will vote<lb />
for the most qualified<lb />
candidate. As a concerned<lb />
voter, I will be voting for the<lb />
person that I feel is most<lb />
qualified for the office of<lb />
treasurer, Gary Gasperini, on<lb />
Tuesday, March 25.<lb />
Gary Gasperini has been<lb />
active in student government<lb />
activities which are related to<lb />
the office of treasurer since his<lb />
freshman year here. As a<lb />
freshman, he first began S.G.A.<lb />
work as the Assistant Public<lb />
Defender of the Men's Judiciary<lb />
and as Chairman of the Student<lb />
Polls Committee. He later<lb />
served as Chairman of the Rules<lb />
Committee of the legislature,<lb />
where during summer school he<lb />
aided im making many financial<lb />
appropriations to campus<lb />
organizations. <lb />
His sophomore year also<lb />
gave him a vast amount of<lb />
training in the duties of the<lb />
office of treasurer: serving as<lb />
President of the Sophomore<lb />
class and as a member of the<lb />
Executive Council, both of<lb />
which have many dealings with<lb />
financial problems. Some of his<lb />
experience in monetary affairs<lb />
has been obtained by serving as<lb />
the Executive Committee<lb />
Chairman of the transit system<lb />
which will begin its trial period<lb />
in the next few weeks.<lb />
A complete knowledge of<lb />
the S.G.A. is the first<lb />
requirement for a person to be<lb />
an effective treauurer. Not only<lb />
does Gary Gasperini meet this<lb />
first requirement by his<lb />
experience on the legislative,<lb />
executive, and judicial branches<lb />
of the S.G.A but he also<lb />
satisfies the second requirement<lb />
by being a business major.<lb />
As the outgoing Treasurer of<lb />
the Student Government<lb />
Association, I endorse Gary<lb />
Gasperini as the most qualified<lb />
candidate for the office of<lb />
treasurer.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Buford Davis<lb />
Fellow Students:<lb />
Your money should be<lb />
handled with care. The funds of<lb />
the Student Government<lb />
Association are your money<lb />
since the S.G.A. is financed by<lb />
you and a servant to you. The<lb />
Treasurer of the S.G.A. has the<lb />
responsibility to see that your<lb />
money, which is entrusted to<lb />
him is managed properly, 'n<lb />
order to do this, there must be<lb />
a responsible and<lb />
knowledgeable Treasurer, so<lb />
that the various activities and<lb />
appropriations of campus<lb />
organizations are most<lb />
beneficial to you.<lb />
The responsible and<lb />
knowledgeable person to<lb />
manage your money should<lb />
have a knowledge of the<lb />
legislative, executive, and<lb />
judiciary branches of your<lb />
S.G.A. of which I have served<lb />
in all branches. He should also<lb />
have a knowledge of accounting<lb />
procedures and economic<lb />
thought similar to what I have<lb />
learned by being an Economics<lb />
major.<lb />
The most important person<lb />
here at East Carolina University<lb />
is you. You, being important,<lb />
should be made aware of where<lb />
your- money is being spent.<lb />
After all, it is your S.G.A. If<lb />
elected, my plans are to make a<lb />
monthly statement to you<lb />
every month which would be<lb />
printed in "The East<lb />
Carolinian" immediately after<lb />
such a statement was prepared.<lb />
If you wished to know of<lb />
certain expenditures made by<lb />
the S.G.A. before the statement<lb />
was printed in the newspaper, I<lb />
would always be happy to<lb />
answer any of your questions or<lb />
hear any of your opinions by<lb />
keeping the office door open to<lb />
you.<lb />
On Tuesday, March 25th,<lb />
please take a close look at the<lb />
office of treasurer before you<lb />
vote. The position of treasurer<lb />
is extremely important in that<lb />
he advises the executive<lb />
legislature and other<lb />
organizations on the financial<lb />
workability of the S.G.A.<lb />
programs.<lb />
Thank you,<lb />
Gary Gasperini<lb />
STEVEN SHARPE<lb />
GARY GASPERINI<lb />
Dear Fellow Students,<lb />
On March 25, we will go to<lb />
the polls and select our SGA<lb />
executive officers, including the<lb />
Treasurer. I would like to<lb />
submit for your consideration<lb />
Steve Sharpe as our next SGA<lb />
Treasurer. Steve has, in my<lb />
opinion, the four qualities that<lb />
I deem necessary for any<lb />
successful executive officer <lb />
leadership, responsibility,<lb />
experience, and enthusiasm. I<lb />
have worked with Steve in the<lb />
SGA since he was a freshman<lb />
and can attest to his interest,<lb />
concern, and ability to serve the<lb />
student body.<lb />
For example, during his<lb />
freshman year Steve was elected<lb />
to the Legislature where he<lb />
served on the Budget and Rules<lb />
Committees. He also served on<lb />
the Internal Affairs Committee<lb />
and as the Campus Co ordinator<lb />
of CHOICE '68. In the spring<lb />
he was chosen by the members<lb />
of the Student Party to be its<lb />
Vice-Chairman.<lb />
This year, Steve was again<lb />
elected to the Legislature where<lb />
he n ow assu mes the<lb />
co-chairmanship of the<lb />
powerful Rules Committee. He<lb />
is also the chairman of the<lb />
"Red Tape" Committee which<lb />
is trying to reform such matters<lb />
as drop-add, plus serving his<lb />
fellow students by working in<lb />
the Popular Entertainment<lb />
Committee, Public Relations<lb />
Committee, and the Family<lb />
Life Committee. Steve is<lb />
presently Chairman of the<lb />
Student Party.<lb />
Steve's other activities<lb />
include the Sigma Chi Delta<lb />
fraternity where the brothers<lb />
have elected him during his two<lb />
years in the fraternity as<lb />
Corresponding Secretary,<lb />
Pa r I i a m e n tarian, and<lb />
Vice-President.<lb />
Extracurricular activities can<lb />
demonstrate leadership and<lb />
enthusiasm, but in selecting a<lb />
Treasurer we need more. The<lb />
Treasurer will be responsible for<lb />
dispersing nearly a quarter of a<lb />
million dollars to nearly thirty<lb />
different student sponsored<lb />
organizations. Steve is a<lb />
Business Administration major<lb />
and has worked closely with<lb />
many of the organizations that<lb />
receive SGA money. It is<lb />
imperative that we have a<lb />
Treasurer who has had working<lb />
experience with these<lb />
organizations in determining<lb />
whether their budgetory<lb />
requests are valid. Because of<lb />
this factor and his<lb />
demonstrated capabilities and<lb />
hard work in the Legislature, I<lb />
am voting for Steve Sharpe for<lb />
Treasurer. I hope that you will<lb />
join me. Thank you.<lb />
Bill Richardson<lb />
Dear Students:<lb />
For the past two years it has<lb />
been my priviledge to serve you<lb />
in the Student Government<lb />
Association Legislature. I have<lb />
been deeply aware of the<lb />
responsibility that has been<lb />
entrusted to me and it has been<lb />
my purpose to devote all my<lb />
time, effort, and energy to the<lb />
representation of the students<lb />
of East Carolina University.<lb />
In previous campaigns, I<lb />
pledged that I would represent<lb />
the students in a fair manner. I<lb />
firmly believe that I have done<lb />
this. It is also my firm belief<lb />
that if representative<lb />
government is to be successful,<lb />
it must have the fullest possible<lb />
participation by all the<lb />
students. Therefore, I am asking<lb />
the students of East Carolina<lb />
University to support and elect<lb />
me treasurer of the SGA.<lb />
Qualifications are important<lb />
in any election and I feel it is<lb />
necessary for me to introduce<lb />
to the students of ECU some of<lb />
my qualifications. I am a<lb />
business administration major.<lb />
During my freshman year I<lb />
served on the Internal Affairs<lb />
Committee, i.i the Legislature,<lb />
on the Rules Committee of the<lb />
Legislature, and on the<lb />
Budget-Checking Committee,<lb />
all SGA related activities. Also I<lb />
served as Campus Coordinator<lb />
of the National Choice '68<lb />
Elections and as vice-chairman<lb />
of the Student Party.<lb />
This year I have served you<lb />
on the Popular Entertainment<lb />
Committee, in the Legislature,<lb />
as Chairman of the "Red Tape"<lb />
Committee, and as a member of<lb />
the Public Relation and Family<lb />
Life Committees. I am<lb />
presently serving as Chairman<lb />
of the Student Party. have<lb />
served Sigma Chi Delta<lb />
Fraternity as Parliamentarian<lb />
and Vice President.<lb />
I have tried to represent all<lb />
the students fairly and in a<lb />
manner I would want to be<lb />
represented. It has also been a<lb />
source of great satisfaction to<lb />
me that I have been able assist<lb />
the students in the SGA.<lb />
I want to continue my work<lb />
in the SGA for the students of<lb />
ECU and I am grateful for the<lb />
encouragement I am receiving<lb />
in this campaign. It is my hope<lb />
that you elect me treasurer of<lb />
the SGA on Tuesday, March 25.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Steven L. Sharpe,<lb />
Candidate for Treasurer<lb />
secretary<lb />
Fellow Students,<lb />
I seldom have the<lb />
opportunity to publicly express<lb />
my opinion about a candidate,<lb />
and I rarely have the chance to<lb />
write for someone who is as<lb />
qualified for the position they<lb />
are seeking as Carolyn Breelove,<lb />
who is seeking the office of<lb />
Secretary of our SGA.<lb />
In my three years of<lb />
association with Carolyn, she<lb />
has always been conscientious<lb />
and dependable. She has an<lb />
interest in our university and its<lb />
betterment that is shown in her<lb />
hard work on such committees<lb />
as the Homecoming Committee<lb />
and the Red Tape Committee,<lb />
of which she is secretary.<lb />
Carolyn is willing to work for<lb />
what she believes in. This is<lb />
evident when you consider that<lb />
she is a marshal and Public<lb />
Relations Secretary.<lb />
In the coming election you,<lb />
the voter, have a choice; why<lb />
not choose the best? If you<lb />
want a conscientious secretary,<lb />
vote for Carolyn Breedlove. If<lb />
you want a secretary with your<lb />
interests in mind, vote for<lb />
Carolyn Breedlove. Your vote<lb />
for Carolyn will be a vote in<lb />
your favor.<lb />
Voting for Carolyn,<lb />
Dan Bland<lb />
Dear Students,<lb />
It's Spring and again as in all<lb />
ECU Spring Quarters the trees<lb />
have come alive, not with<lb />
leaves, but with colorful<lb />
banners and posters. Even with<lb />
all their color and smiles these<lb />
posters signify something quite<lb />
serious to the future of East<lb />
Carolina. They indicate that<lb />
next Tuesday we must decide<lb />
which five people will assume<lb />
the leadership responsibilities<lb />
necessary for a successful and<lb />
effective Student Government.<lb />
As the University Party's<lb />
candidate for SGA Secretary, I<lb />
feel very strongly that our<lb />
decisions must be given careful<lb />
consideration. We should set up<lb />
a system of values by which we<lb />
choose upon personal merit. To<lb />
choose by any other means<lb />
would be to cheat ourselves of<lb />
the best leadership.<lb />
I have had a great deal of<lb />
experience with the SGA for<lb />
the past two ye<lb />

Fellow Students,<lb />
You as the voting students<lb />
of this school are fortunate to<lb />
have two qualified candidates<lb />
running for the office of SGA<lb />
secretary. In the election next<lb />
week, you have a choice to<lb />
make. The Student Party<lb />
candidate, Peggy Sledd, has the<lb />
skill and qualities necessary for<lb />
the office of secretary. Peggy<lb />
has participated on several<lb />
student government committees<lb />
and therefore has a knowledge<lb />
of the way your SGA works. In<lb />
addition to her experience,<lb />
Peggy has two years left in<lb />
school to serve the student<lb />
government. She is familiar<lb />
with the responsibilities of this<lb />
office and is eager to accept<lb />
these responsibilities.<lb />
Because of her experience,<lb />
skill, and desire to serve, we<lb />
urge you to vote for Peggy for<lb />
your Student Government<lb />
Secretary.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Jean Harvey<lb />
Dear Students,<lb />
Being a transfer student<lb />
from Stratford College is a<lb />
handicap for me because I have<lb />
not met many of you - much<lb />
less worked in East Carolina's<lb />
Student Government. However,<lb />
I would not have accepted the<lb />
nomination to run as the<lb />
Student Party's candidate for<lb />
historian had I not felt<lb />
qualified.<lb />
While attending Stratford I<lb />
served as Secretary of Judicial<lb />
Board and was a member of the<lb />
Executive Board. Tracing back<lb />
further to high school, I was a<lb />
member of student council,<lb />
served as Assembly Chairman of<lb />
Ways and Means; and lastly, I<lb />
was elected President of the<lb />
Student Cooperative<lb />
Association. Here at East<lb />
Carolina University, I am a hall<lb />
proctor, member of House<lb />
Council and Student Party<lb />
Publicity Chairman. But, just<lb />
because I have been active in<lb />
student government in the past<lb />
doesn't mean that I would be a<lb />
good historian, right? Right!<lb />
Because a good historian should<lb />
be creative and should enjoy<lb />
her work, for she has to make a<lb />
scrapbook composed of all<lb />
student government activities.<lb />
A good historian should also be<lb />
efficient, for she is to "compile<lb />
an annual report of student<lb />
activities and submit this report<lb />
to East Carolina University<lb />
President and Dean of Student<lb />
Affairs<lb />
Experience counts, but my<lb />
being initiative, dependable,<lb />
and imaginative are of extreme<lb />
importance, too.<lb />
I would like very much to<lb />
serve East Carolina University<lb />
as historian, but I can't fulfill<lb />
this desire without your<lb />
support.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
"Sip" Beamon<lb />
Candidate for Historian<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
Sip Beamon is my favorite<lb />
candidate for SGA Historian<lb />
and I hope that she will be<lb />
yours. Sip is one of the most<lb />
enthusiastic and<lb />
hardest-working girls I have had<lb />
the pleasure to know. As a<lb />
member of Executive Council,<lb />
Sip will be an asset to a stronger<lb />
student government and an<lb />
outstanding representative of<lb />
East Carolina.<lb />
Sip's ability to assume<lb />
responsibility dates back to<lb />
high school in Suffolk, Va<lb />
where she was President of the<lb />
Student Body. Sip is a junior<lb />
transfer student from Stratford<lb />
College. At Stratford she was<lb />
secretary of the Judicial Board,<lb />
which is similar to our Honor<lb />
Council, and she was voted one<lb />
o f seven outstand ing<lb />
sophomores. A physical<lb />
education major, Sip was<lb />
captain of the tennis and<lb />
basketball teams.<lb />
Though Sip has been at East<lb />
Carolina a short while, she has<lb />
jumped into campus activities.<lb />
She is Publicity Chairman for<lb />
the Student Party, a member of<lb />
Phi Epsilon Mu, a member of<lb />
House Council in Fletcher, and<lb />
a pledge of Alpha Delta Pi<lb />
Sorority.<lb />
Please remember Sip<lb />
Beamon at the polls March<lb />
25th.<lb />
Marty Almon<lb />
In addition, I feel that both of<lb />
these parties have exceptional<lb />
qualities: however, they also<lb />
have weak points. I hope that I<lb />
can discriminate between the<lb />
strong and weak points of these<lb />
two parties and as an individual<lb />
represent the combined<lb />
strengths.<lb />
For my platform, I propose<lb />
the following:<lb />
To list in the 1969 70 Key<lb />
the Qualifications and Duties of<lb />
the Historian. These are:<lb />
Qualifications:<lb />
- The Historian shall have<lb />
been in attendance as a student<lb />
at East Carolina University for<lb />
at least three (3) consecutive<lb />
quarters proceeding his<lb />
elect'on.<lb />
- The Historian shall have<lb />
and maintain a "C" average.<lb />
Duties:<lb />
- To keep an up to-date<lb />
record of all recognized<lb />
organizations sponsored by the<lb />
SGA and of their constitutions.<lb />
- To maintain the official<lb />
student government scrapbook,<lb />
which shall be available and<lb />
up-to-date at all times.<lb />
- To compile an annual<lb />
report of student activities for<lb />
the President of East Carolina<lb />
University and the Dean of<lb />
Student Affairs.<lb />
- To perform all other<lb />
duties of such an office.<lb />
I hope to display the<lb />
scrapbook from the preceeding<lb />
MARION BARICK<lb />
SIP BEAMON<lb />
Dear Students<lb />
of East Carolina University:<lb />
I, Marion Barick, am running<lb />
as an Independent candidate fot<lb />
SGA Historian. I feel that<lb />
having represented you as<lb />
Secretary of Freshman Class,<lb />
legislator, chairman of the<lb />
Steering Committee for the<lb />
Faculty SGA Administration<lb />
Forum, chairman of the<lb />
Legislative Committee, member<lb />
of Budget Committee, and<lb />
member of the Election<lb />
Committee, I am able to<lb />
effectively serve the students of<lb />
East Carolina as Historian.<lb />
I do not represent the<lb />
University or Student Party.<lb />
Why? Primarily I hope to<lb />
represent the student body as a<lb />
whole, NOT a party or<lb />
particular segment of the body.<lb />
year in the library for the<lb />
students' use.<lb />
I, if elected, plan to hold<lb />
regular office hours as other<lb />
SGA Executives.<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />
Marion Barick<lb />
Candidate for Historian<lb />
Dear Students,<lb />
I have been asked to give<lb />
you my opinions concerning<lb />
the qualifications of Marion<lb />
Barick, candidate for SGA<lb />
historian. Marion Barick is not a<lb />
candidate from either political<lb />
party of campus and yet she has<lb />
undertaken to be elected to an<lb />
executive position. This to me<lb />
is commendable. It indicates an<lb />
individuality and determination<lb />
seldom found in the average<lb />

IA Sense 01 Style I<lb />
by Don Pierce . <lb />
"La Dolce Vita" not as advertised<lb />
"I went to Philadelphia<lb />
once, it was closed<lb />
He hated dogs, children,<lb />
nagging wives. He was a<lb />
constant drinker, an eternal foe,<lb />
of the establishment. W.C.<lb />
Fields was a revolutionary of<lb />
another era.<lb />
There are thousands of<lb />
stories about Fields; most are<lb />
true. It is true that he used to<lb />
drink two double martinis every<lb />
day before breakfast, and that<lb />
he slept on a pool table instead<lb />
of in a bed. However, despite<lb />
his many social faults and odd<lb />
habits, W.C. Fields has emerged<lb />
as perhaps the greatest all-time<lb />
comic.<lb />
It is a trait of style that style<lb />
is a personal thing, the finishing<lb />
"touch" on a person. Style is<lb />
something that is instantly<lb />
recognized as belonging to only<lb />
one particular person. One's<lb />
style is never the style of<lb />
another. So it was with Fields.<lb />
The mannerisms are familiar<lb />
enough: the flowery speech, the<lb />
bulbous red nose, the rasping<lb />
monotone that invoked such<lb />
lines as: "Women are like<lb />
elephants to me, I like to look<lb />
at them, but I wouldn't want to<lb />
own one<lb />
Fields was a rebel. Even in a<lb />
Hollywood filled with zany<lb />
personalities. Fields stood out<lb />
as one of the most colorful<lb />
personalities. Field's<lb />
relationships with people were<lb />
constantly enriched by his<lb />
maniacal sense of humor.<lb />
Fields had a dwarf named<lb />
Blanche who was his comic<lb />
"stooge When the dwarf came<lb />
to work for Fields, he did not<lb />
have any teeth. Fields bought<lb />
Blanche a set of false teeth.<lb />
Soon there was trouble.<lb />
Whenever the dwarf would<lb />
refuse to do as Fields had<lb />
ordered, W.C. would wrestle<lb />
Blanche to the ground, pull out<lb />
the false teeth, and hold them<lb />
as ransom until Blanche did as<lb />
ordered.<lb />
Fields off-screen was exactl<lb />
like Fields on-screen. His<lb />
running feud with child star<lb />
Baby Leroy is movie legend.<lb />
Fields once put gin into Baby<lb />
Leroy's milk bottle after the<lb />
kid had been stealing scenes<lb />
from him. Baby Leroy passed<lb />
out for the day, and Fields<lb />
continued to film with all<lb />
attention on himself.<lb />
Fields' drinking habits are<lb />
well known. When he was in<lb />
vaudeville, earning five<lb />
thousand dollars a week as a<lb />
star juggler, he carried with him<lb />
three large wooden trunks, tvo<lb />
of costumes, one of liquor.<lb />
One night Fields and writer<lb />
Gene Fowler were prowling the<lb />
back country of the deep south,<lb />
when their car became wedged<lb />
on a railroad crossing. They<lb />
tried to push it out, but the<lb />
stubborn car refused to move.<lb />
A train was coming, and Fowler<lb />
began to jettison props and<lb />
costumes.<lb />
Fieldsgrabbed his liquor<lb />
trunk, paid no attention to his<lb />
juggling props,andheand<lb />
Fowler sat down for a drink. As<lb />
the train ran through the<lb />
crossing, Fieldsand Fowler<lb />
were just finishing their first<lb />
double martini. (Next week,<lb />
Fields: Part 2.)<lb />
by James Boswell<lb />
"La Dolce Vita" was<lb />
advertised at a local motion<lb />
picture house as "uncensored"<lb />
and "uncut The film was cut,<lb />
atrociously cut, mangled<lb />
beyond belief.<lb />
Fellini's film quickly became<lb />
controversial when it was<lb />
released in 1961. Many critics<lb />
regard itasa masterpiece.<lb />
Masterpieces have been ruined<lb />
before by foolish cutting, but<lb />
to advertise a serious work of<lb />
art as unabridged when it has<lb />
been considerably altered is an<lb />
inexcusable deception of the<lb />
public and a travesty against the<lb />
film's creator.<lb />
I saw the film seven years<lb />
agoanditsvividvisual<lb />
impressions remain. Originally,<lb />
the movie opened with a shot<lb />
of a large statue of Christ being<lb />
transported beneath a<lb />
helicopter high over Rome. It<lb />
was a visual effect not soon<lb />
forgotten, but is entirely absent<lb />
from this version.<lb />
Originally, a very important<lb />
part of the movie concerned a<lb />
sensitive intellectual who finally<lb />
commits suicide. He completely<lb />
disappears from this butchered<lb />
version. Also missing from the<lb />
film: the attempted suicide of<lb />
Marcello's mistress, the sham<lb />
religious miracle, and three<lb />
sequences concerning Steiner,<lb />
Marcello's intellectual friend.<lb />
These ep isodes were not<lb />
excised accidentally. Nor was<lb />
there an attempttocensor<lb />
"salacious" sections. (The<lb />
sect ions in question are far<lb />
from salacious.) The cu s<lb />
represent rather a brut, i,<lb />
callous attempt to shorten the<lb />
film and sell it as a sex<lb />
spectacular (which it is not) at meaninglessness and revolted by<lb />
let nature<lb />
take its course<lb />
you may fail yours,<lb />
You were supposed to cram for<lb />
calculus tonight, but somehow 35-21-35<lb />
looked more appealing than the<lb />
derivative of x3.<lb />
And now it's 1 a.m. And nature can<lb />
play some pretty mean tricks on a guy<lb />
at 1 a.m.<lb />
Relax, take a couple of NoDoz<lb />
and stop relaxing.<lb />
NoDoz has the strongest stimulant<lb />
you can buy without a prescription.<lb />
And it's not habit forming.<lb />
NoDoz will help you resist<lb />
nature, at least until the next $M&<lb />
time a cold hard fact loses<lb />
out to a soft warm one<lb />
the expense of some of its most<lb />
sensitive material.<lb />
Marcello Rubini isa<lb />
third-rate reporter in Rome,<lb />
caughtupinthemad,<lb />
competitive whirl of yellow<lb />
journalism. The society which<lb />
supplies him with his scandal<lb />
stories is made up of bored<lb />
sophisticates and pseudo-artists,<lb />
despairing intellectuals, deviates<lb />
of all kinds, a listless aristocracy<lb />
which has plumbed the depths<lb />
of degeneracy, and all the<lb />
jackal-hyena types who prey<lb />
around the famous. The film is<lb />
a welter of episodes, varying<lb />
from uninhibited debauchery to<lb />
screaming hysteria to poignant<lb />
and pathetic wist fulness.<lb />
Marcell, smothered in<lb />
the inhuman tendency of his<lb />
life, can nonetheless find no<lb />
recourse but to immerse himself<lb />
still further in depravity.<lb />
One leaves the film feeling<lb />
that he has participatd in a<lb />
deuauchery which jadesand<lb />
alienates from innocence.<lb />
Marcello "can't understand" a<lb />
young girl whosmilingly<lb />
beckons him away from his<lb />
coterie of acquaintances. Her<lb />
innocent, questioning smile<lb />
ends the film even as the benign<lb />
face of Christ opened it. And all<lb />
between is madness.<lb />
(Note: The local theater<lb />
disclaims responsibility for the<lb />
cutting, which shortened the<lb />
film from a scheduled 180<lb />
minutes to 140.)<lb />

It looks as if American<lb />

came up with something called<lb />
"Wild in the Streets" which, by<lb />
some small miracle, sold at the<lb />

The film is handled as<lb />
tastefully as possible, but no<lb />

nothing but a cheap sex-romp<lb />

Playhouse's 'Summer tree'<lb />
whimsical, tragic, and vita<lb />
by Jim Slaughter<lb />
drama instructor<lb />
Some urgently vital personal<lb />
problems of our time are<lb />
explored in "Summertree the<lb />
next production by the East<lb />
Carolina Playhouse, which opens<lb />
for a four-night run March 26 in<lb />
McGinnis Auditorium.<lb />
The play was one of the most<lb />
acclaimed plays of the year in<lb />
New York in 1968, when its<lb />
author, Ron Cowen, was 22<lb />
years old.<lb />
"Summertree" looks wryly<lb />
upon the war in Vietnam, upon<lb />
the sense of frustration in many<lb />
young people today over an<lb />
inability to accomplish their<lb />
goals in a conventional society,<lb />
and upon the anguish of parents<lb />
and children who, though loving<lb />
each other, find themselves in<lb />
conflict with each other - all<lb />
this through a dramatized series<lb />
of a young man's reveries as they<lb />
swing back and forth through<lb />
past memories, present fears and<lb />
a future doom in a war the<lb />
young man abhors.<lb />
Whimsical and Tragic<lb />
In a play that is whimsical,<lb />
funny and tragically sad, these<lb />
memories lip across the young<lb />
man's mind - and are bodied<lb />
forth on the stage - as in one of<lb />
the day dreams he once indulged<lb />
on lazy summer afternoons<lb />
beneath a beloved big tree in his<lb />
family back yard.<lb />
Here, in his mind as he sits in<lb />
the shade of the tree, come his<lb />
doting mother, his father who<lb />
loves him but wants him to<lb />
become another kind of person,<lb />
his affectionate sweetheart who<lb />
understands him, and a<lb />
personification of himself as a<lb />
child - all helping him replay<lb />
the story of his life.<lb />
A dimension of reality that<lb />
seems realer-than- real, as if seen<lb />
at the moment of dying,<lb />
envelopes these characters, who<lb />
have no names and could be all<lb />
of us.<lb />
Critical Success<lb />
"Summertree" was one of the<lb />
most warmly praised plays to<lb />
reach New York in several<lb />
seasons.<lb />
Critics welcomed it as being<lb />
eloquent, universal, compelling,<lb />
perceptive and intelligent.<lb />
It was presented in 1968 as<lb />
part of a series introducing new<lb />
young playwrights,<lb />
supplementary to the main "big<lb />
season" of the Repertory<lb />
Theatre of Lincoln Center, and<lb />
it was scheduled for a four-week<lb />
run.<lb />
The play, however, drew such<lb />
thronging audiences that it was<lb />
continued for sixteen weeks, and<lb />
it was given a Drama<lb />
Desk Vernon Rice Award as<lb />
being one of the outstanding<lb />
productions of the season.<lb />
Under the direction of Zara<lb />
Shakow, E.C.Us guest<lb />
director in residence, the cast<lb />
Loan program<lb />
fares decline<lb />
(ACP) Federal<lb />
contributions to the National<lb />
Defense student loan program<lb />
will drop for the first time since<lb />
the program was started 10<lb />
years ago if Congress adopts the<lb />
proposed budget for next year.<lb />
The budget for fiscal 1970<lb />
would provide about $31.5<lb />
million less money for 44,000<lb />
fewer loans than in the current<lb />
year.<lb />
Reduction of budget<lb />
obligations for the National<lb />
Defense loans from $193.4<lb />
million this year to $161.9<lb />
million in 1970 is anticipated.<lb />
The number of students<lb />
receiving these loans would<lb />
drop from about 442,000 to<lb />
398,000.<lb />

ECU's Crew team opened<lb />
their '69 season over quarter<lb />
break with four meets in<lb />
Florida<lb />
Their first race was with the<lb />
University of Tampa, which the<lb />
Bucs won easily by six boat<lb />
lengths, or 24 seconds.<lb />
The JV lost by two lengths.<lb />
The team then traveled to<lb />
Lakeland, Florida, for a meet<lb />
with Florida Southern. Facing a<lb />
40 mph wind, the varsity<lb />
competed, while the JV won by<lb />
forfeit when the Fla. Southern<lb />
coach decided it was too rough<lb />
for his team to row.<lb />
The varsity lost by four<lb />
seconds. Winter Park, Fir was<lb />
the team's next stop, for a<lb />
contest with Rollins Collegs,<lb />
one of the top six schools at<lb />
last year's Pod Vail Regatta.<lb />
Again the team took a loss, and<lb />
again by four seconds, but they<lb />
scored a much better time for<lb />
the race than their previous<lb />
one, and it later turned out to<lb />
be the best time they had while<lb />
in Florida, at 6:12. Rollins<lb />
recorded a 6:08. The JV took<lb />
their contest by six to eight<lb />
lengths.<lb />
Jacksonville was the team's<lb />
last stop, meeting two teams in<lb />
the University of Jacksonville,<lb />
and the University of Alabama.<lb />
East Carolina downed both<lb />
the teams, with a fine spirit,<lb />
after they had trailed until that<lb />
time. In the JV contest, East<lb />
Carolina lost to Alabama, and<lb />
beat the Univ. of Jacksonville<lb />
by a few seats.<lb />
The Citadel will be the<lb />
team's next competition, March<lb />
29, at Charleston.<lb />
This year's team is composed<lb />
of, cox'n Steve Mable, a three<lb />
year man; stroke, Dennis<lb />
Mountcastle, a two year man;<lb />
Brown Mins, two years; Dick<lb />
Fuller, two years; Dave<lb />
Williams, two years; Hank<lb />
Milligan, 1st year. Bob Fuller,<lb />
two years; John Findley, three<lb />
years, and Rick Logan, 1st year.<lb />
The only previously<lb />
experienced men on the team<lb />
are Bud Alexander who rowed<lb />
for George Washington High<lb />
School, John Findly, who<lb />
rowed for Washington and Lee<lb />
High School, and Rick Logan,<lb />
who rowed for Clark<lb />
University.<lb />
by John Lowe<lb />
Wayne King fired a<lb />
three hitter and Roy Taylor and<lb />
Ken Graver supplied the<lb />
firepower as East Carolina<lb />
downed the Ithaca College<lb />
Bombers by 3 0 in their home<lb />
opener. The win evened the<lb />
Perates' record at 11.<lb />
Taylor got the Pirates on the<lb />
way with the first home run of<lb />
the year for East Carolina in the<lb />
second inning to give King a 1 0<lb />
lead, which, as it turned out<lb />
was all he needed. Ken Gravei<lb />
gave the Jacksonville native two<lb />
more insurance runs with a<lb />
two run homer in the seventh<lb />
inning to wind up the Pirates'<lb />
GOLF<lb />
East Carolina's golf team<lb />
finally opened their season<lb />
Tuesday with a match against<lb />
Atlantic Christian College,<lb />
downing the Bulldogs by 16-2,<lb />
with the Bucs taking all but one<lb />
match.<lb />
The Buc's first scheduled<lb />
match, against Campbell<lb />
College, was postponed. A<lb />
make-up date has not yet been<lb />
set.<lb />
The Bulldog's John<lb />
McDustrell, the only ACC<lb />
player to win, downed Mike<lb />
Schlueter, the Buc's number<lb />
one man. McDustrell defeated<lb />
Schlueter, 2 1.<lb />
The remainder of the match<lb />
went as follows:<lb />
Jack Williams, (ECU),<lb />
defeated Joey Gilbert, 3 0;<lb />
Marshall Utterson, (ECU),<lb />
defeated Bill Hackett, 3 0;<lb />
Vernon Tyson, (ECU), defeated<lb />
Danny Brown, 3 0; Joe Tyson,<lb />
(ECU), defeated Harry McKaig,<lb />
3-0; and Vance Whicker, (ECU),<lb />
defeated Ray Wooten, 3 0.<lb />
East Carolina's next match<lb />

Meanwhile, King was keeping<lb />
the Bombers in check as he<lb />
struck out 11 while only<lb />
walking three. In only one<lb />
inning, the seventh, did he not<lb />
strike out at least one batter.<lb />
Joseph Lapierre pitched a<lb />
good game for Ithaca, but he<lb />
made two mistakes and they<lb />
both cost him. Lapierre went<lb />
seven full innings before retiring<lb />
for a pinch hitter. He struck out<lb />
six and walked two during his<lb />
stay. Gail Wrighter mopped up<lb />
for the Bombers, striking out<lb />
two of the three men he faced.<lb />
Ithaca threatened in the first<lb />
inning when Richard Miller<lb />
walked after two were out and<lb />
Jerry Gardner reached base on<lb />
Jimmy Lanier's error at third,<lb />
but King settled down to get<lb />
Richard Goodwin out on a fly<lb />
to center.<lb />
East Carolina then moved<lb />
ahead 10 as Taylor drove one<lb />
far over the left centerfield<lb />
fence in the bottom of the<lb />
second.<lb />
The Bombers got a man to<lb />
third base in the third as Dale<lb />
Dirk doubled after two were<lb />
out and then moved up on a<lb />
wild pitch. However, he was left<lb />
standing there as King struck<lb />
out Miller to retire the side.<lb />
In the sixth, Keith Kurowski<lb />
opened the frame with a single<lb />
to right for Ithaca. Miller<lb />
walked one out later and both<lb />
runners moved to third on a<lb />
ground out. King then got<lb />
Richard Goodwin on a fly to<lb />
center to retire the side.<lb />
East Carolina, meanwhile,<lb />
was having problems with<lb />
Lapierre's curve ball, as they<lb />
weren't able to put men on<lb />
base.<lb />
In the seventh, the roof<lb />
caved in foi Lapierre as Taylor<lb />
opened the inning with a single<lb />
down the third base line to left.<lb />
Graver then followed,<lb />
unloading his first hit of the<lb />
year far over the left field<lb />
fence, making it 3 0. Jerry<lb />
Rawls walked, but Ithaca got<lb />
out of the inning as Len Dowd<lb />
popped to the pitcher and King<lb />
hit into a double-play to end<lb />
the inning.<lb />
Ithaca got men on base in the<lb />
eighth and ninth, but could not<lb />
get them around.<lb />
Taylor was the only Pirate to<lb />
get two hits, with his homer<lb />
and single. Len Dowd and Stu<lb />
Garrett each got singles in<lb />
addition to Graver's homer for<lb />
the five East Carolina hits.<lb />
For Ithaca, Dirk had a<lb />
double, Kurowski a single, and<lb />
pinch hitter Robert Borowicz<lb />
also got a single for their three<lb />
hits.<lb />
The Pirates, now with a 1-1<lb />
mark, will face Ithaca again<lb />
today at 3 p.m. North Carolina<lb />
comes in for a 3 p.m. game on<lb />
Friday while Virginia comes in<lb />
over the weekend for single<lb />
games on Saturday and Sunday.<lb />

The Eastern Carolina Classic, which was held this<lb />
past December for the first time, may not be<lb />
continued. It seems that the financial loss incurred by<lb />
poor attendance has just about discouraged the<lb />
University from trying again.<lb />
That would indeed be a shame since it took three<lb />
years for the Dixie Classic to make money. East<lb />
Carolina officials should give the Classic, which<lb />
brought exceptionally fine basketball to this area,<lb />
another year or two before throwing out a potentially<lb />
great classic.<lb />
While the official decision has not yet been<lb />
announced, it would seem that the Classic should be<lb />
continued next year, if not only to honor the signed<lb />
contracts for the field already selected for next year.<lb />
Classic coordinators should be able to strengthen the<lb />
weaknesses evident in the premier event to eliminate<lb />
a loss, or to cut any loss down to a very small<lb />
amount.<lb />
There are good ways to promote the Eastern<lb />
Carolina Classic and make it pay off, it only remains<lb />
to be seen if the East Carolina athletic officials who<lb />
make the decision will look at it objectively. If so,<lb />
they will see the boundless ways to help make the<lb />
Classic successful.<lb />
Not only will the Classic give the people of eastern<lb />
North Carolina some outstanding basketball, it will<lb />
give the East Carolina basketball program the big<lb />
boost it needs to continue the development shown in<lb />
the past few years even though it is on what could be<lb />
called a Carolinas Conference budget.<lb />
The Classic can enhance the overall athletic picture<lb />
here at East Carolina, but to do so, it must first be<lb />
given a second chance!<lb />
Baseball Pirates Lose Opener<lb />

The grapplers th is year<lb />
finished with a 9-2 record in<lb />

coming on close decisions that<lb />
could have gone either way.<lb />
The Bucs had two members<lb />

with Tim Ellenberger taking his<lb />

capturing a first in the<lb />

In order to effectively cover<lb />

sections.<lb />
First, the vice president is<lb />
the S.G.A. officer in charge of<lb />
selecting and advising the<lb />
cheerleader squad. Also, he is<lb />
the S.G.A. coordinator for the<lb />
Spirit Committee. With such an<lb />
impressive sports complex as<lb />
Minqes Coliseum and a rising<lb />
basketball team, I think we<lb />
need bigger half time<lb />
productions.<lb />
Second, the vice-president is<lb />
in charge of the Homecoming<lb />
Parade. By directing the<lb />
building of a winning float, and<lb />
by being involved in the overall<lb />
planning of Isast year's parade, I<lb />
have a thorough working<lb />
knowledge of the problems and<lb />
improvements needed.<lb />

Fourth, the vice-president is<lb />
the Chairman of the Honor<lb />

holds the deciding vote between<lb />
three students and three faculty<lb />
members on this, the highest<lb />
judicial body on campus. I have<lb />
served on the Review Board and<lb />
I propose that at least one of<lb />
the students and one of the<lb />
faculty members be women.<lb />
Fifth, the vice-president is<lb />
more than an advisor,<lb />
coordinator or chairman. He<lb />
must also have a broad<lb />
perspective of the S.G.A. as a<lb />
whole. He is the second highest<lb />
officer in the government and<lb />
must understand the many<lb />
parts that comprise it. I can<lb />
fulfil this requirement. In<lb />
addition to being the top aid to<lb />
the vice-president, I have<lb />
assisted the treasurer on the<lb />
Budget Committee and have<lb />
been a consultant-advisor for<lb />
the president.<lb />

The election for the five<lb />
SGA executive offices will be<lb />
held on Tuesday, March 25. As<lb />
a student I understand the<lb />
predicament of many of the<lb />
voters in the election. That is,<lb />
they are not familiar with many<lb />
of the candidates and find<lb />
themselves just voting for a<lb />
name or a party.<lb />
I feel that this year the<lb />
Student Party has provided a<lb />
strong and much-needed<lb />
platform which carries with it<lb />
the spirit of change which is so<lb />
needed in our student<lb />
government. It would be my<lb />
goal, as vice-president, to help<lb />
bridge the gap between the<lb />
SGA and the average East<lb />
Carolina student, and to make<lb />
everyone, not just a chosen few,<lb />
a functioning part of the SGA.<lb />
The present drift of the SGA<lb />
away from the students of ECU<lb />
should not continue, for this<lb />
has caused much of the<lb />
disinterest in student<lb />
government present on our<lb />
campus.<lb />
I am not so much asking for<lb />
support now as I am asking for<lb />
openmindendness and<lb />
consideration in the upcoming<lb />
election. As stated above, I will<lb />
attempt to meet as many<lb />
students as I can, and through<lb />
this to find what the student<lb />
body, not just the few elected<lb />
leaders, wants in its student<lb />
government. . .<lb />

Campus elections prove<lb />
crucial as students move<lb />
to end current apathy<lb />
ecu forum<lb />
To the ditoi<lb />
Lam pus elections for Student Government<lb />
Association officers are to be held next Tuesday,<lb />
March 25 The offices to be filled are president,<lb />
vice president, treasurer, and historian.<lb />
The importance of these SGA offices cannot be<lb />
over emphasized. During the past few years we have<lb />
seen the SGA grow into a strong institution of<lb />
self government, concerned with the welfare of each<lb />
student on this campus.<lb />
Many students are apt to laugh at campus<lb />
elections, or belittle them in some way. They believe<lb />
that the SGA is of little consequence, and thai the<lb />
officers will do Only as the administration directs<lb />
them to<lb />
But this is not the case at ECU. The SGA officials<lb />
here are not lackeys, or puppets of the<lb />
administration. This has been demonstrated by the<lb />
long list of responsibilities given to the SGA to deal<lb />
with, and the confidence placed in them by the<lb />
administration. Also, the competence and capability<lb />
of the SGA to handle campus problems should be<lb />
noted.<lb />
The present day SGA at ECU is one of the<lb />
strongest in the nation. This year, in excess of<lb />
$320,000 of your money was spent by them. Most of<lb />
this money comes from the student activity fee that<lb />
all students pay each quarter, some of it comes from<lb />
ticket fees from concerts, and part of comes from<lb />
newspaper ads.<lb />
During the past few years we have seen the SGA<lb />
institute a complete judicial system, put on numerous<lb />
concerts and popular entertainment programs, bring<lb />
top notch speakers and movies to the campus, deal<lb />
with student rights, finance campus publications (e.g<lb />
"Course Guide "The East Carolinian the 'Rebel<lb />
the "Key and the "Buccaneer"), support athletic<lb />
events, improve the beauty of the campus, finance a<lb />
student loan program, and deal with many other<lb />
wide ranging problems.<lb />
Most important, however, the Student<lb />
Government Association represents you, the students<lb />
both on and off campus.<lb />
Therefore, the SGA needs your support in the<lb />
election next Tuesday. This will be demonstrated by<lb />
your vote. The candidates have worked many long<lb />
hours making up posters, placecards, speeches, and<lb />
marshalling support for the election. They are serious.<lb />
They will be representing ECU throughout the<lb />
following school year.<lb />
Before voting next Tuesday, ask the candidates<lb />
valid, meaningful questions. Make them give you a<lb />
satisfactory answer. Find out how they stand on the<lb />
issues. Then help combat ECU's number one<lb />
problem: apathy. Vote for the candidates of your<lb />
choice.<lb /><lb />
<lb />
Of the many things we have<lb />
done to democracy in the past,<lb />
the worst has been the indignity<lb />
of taking it for granted. <lb />
MAX LERJSER<lb />
I nnumei abl i appi opi iate<lb />
comments might be made about<lb />
the demands submitted by the<lb />
black students of ECU, but<lb />
because of r ecentcampus<lb />
disruptions within the state and<lb />
because of the general racial<lb />
sen t i ment of eastern North<lb />
Carolina t h e f o 11 o w i n g<lb />
comments seem, to me,<lb />
especially appropriate.<lb />
First, them e m be r s o f<lb />
SOULS are aware that some of<lb />
the demands are not clearly<lb />
s t a t ed and have released an<lb />
e laboration.Noreal<lb />
under standing of what these<lb />
d e m ands are is other wise<lb />
possible, and thus no judgment<lb />
about the demands ought to be<lb />
m a d e w i thout h a vin g<lb />
considered these elaborations.<lb />
Secondly, e v e n w i t h the<lb />
elaborations in hand it is<lb />
difficult to understand the<lb />
intentions behind the demands.<lb />
An understanding of the<lb />
mot ivations which prompted<lb />
these demands and the spirit in<lb />
which they are submitted is<lb />
possible only t h rough an<lb />
acquaintance with those<lb />
persons who authored them. I<lb />
have worked on various projects<lb />
with the members of SOULS<lb />
during the past year and have<lb />
found the black students at<lb />
ECU to b e r e a s o n a b I e ,<lb />
fair-minded people. Of course,<lb />
as with any group of a hundred<lb />
or so students, some are<lb />
immature and sometimes speak<lb />
impetuously an action of<lb />
which most everyone is<lb />
sometimes guilty. But this does<lb />
not prevent me from accurately<lb />
d esc r i b i n g I he membei s of<lb />
SOU L S as very personable<lb />
individuals. They are not<lb />
fanatics, extremists or<lb />
separatist, but because of their<lb />
sk in co101 they aremor e<lb />
sensitive than most about some<lb />
areas in which a free democratic<lb />
society has not been f u 11 y<lb />
realized. I would suggest that a<lb />
person's evaluation of these<lb />
demands be preceded by an<lb />
ear nest attempt to become<lb />
acquainted with some of our<lb />
SOUL brothers and sisteis.<lb />
Ilindly, when the demands<lb />
are understood in the context<lb />
of then ela bo ration a nd<lb />
m n t i v a 11 o n t h e y a r e n o I<lb />
unreasonable. There is no<lb />
demand of which will result in<lb />
t he es t a bI ish m e nl of a<lb />
"privileged class" for black<lb />
students. Indeed, most of the<lb />
demands are such that their<lb />
fulfillment will be beneficial to<lb />
all ECU students, present and<lb />
future.<lb />
Fourth. Hopefully t h e<lb />
administration will be able to<lb />
produce actions to support the<lb />
encouraging reports cited in the<lb />
local newspaper. Nothing is<lb />
more important at the present<lb />
time than the establishment of<lb />
good faith bet weent h e<lb />
administration and SOU L S<lb />
Presumably, nothing but action,<lb />
or good evidence of plans for<lb />
action, will suffice.<lb />

Later operating hours for the<lb />
Joyner Library?<lb />
"Probably not in the near<lb />
future according to Vendell<lb />
Smiley, chief of library<lb />
operations.<lb />
This answer was in response<lb />
to an interview with Smiley<lb />
concerning the possibility of<lb />
obtaining later operating hours<lb />
for the Joyner Library, thereby<lb />
giving students more time in<lb />
which to use the facilities there.<lb />
Several students have<lb />
requested that the library be<lb />
open until 11 p.m. on<lb />
weekdays, open earlier on<lb />
Sundays, and remain open on<lb />
Saturday nights.<lb />
"But this is impossible at the<lb />
present time because of the lack<lb />
of funds. More money would be<lb />
needed in order to hire the<lb />
student and professional help<lb />
which would be needed to run<lb />
the library said Smiley.<lb />
According to Smiley, the<lb />
library's budget is controlled by<lb />
the North Carolina State<lb />
Legislature, and the library has<lb />
little control over<lb />
appropriations. "Whatever they<lb />
recommend, we get he said.<lb />
He pointed out this is the<lb />
reason the students have to<lb />
stand in line: "It's because<lb />
we're understaffed. We need<lb />
about six additional<lb />
professional people and 10<lb />
more student employees. But<lb />
because of the present budget<lb />
situation we are unable to hire<lb />
these additional employees<lb />
One plan that the library is<lb />
currently considering is closing<lb />
on Friday nights and increasing<lb />
operating hours on Sundays.<lb />
Under this plan, the library<lb />
would open Sundays at 1 p.m.<lb />
and close at 11 p.m.<lb />
Right now the library staff is<lb />
investigating how much the<lb />
facilities are actually used on<lb />
Friday nights.<lb />
"A few Friday nights<lb />
commented Smiley, "we have<lb />
more employees in the library<lb />
than we have students. Until<lb />
more students indicate they<lb />
want to use the library on<lb />
Friday nights, we will certainly<lb />
not consider opening on<lb />
Saturday nights<lb />
But he thinks the idea of<lb />
staying open to 11 o'clock on<lb />
weeknights ia good idea.<lb />
"Since the budget is under<lb />
the control of the Governor and<lb />
state legislature the necessary<lb />
increases will have to come<lb />
from them. The library gets a<lb />
'line appropriation' directly<lb />
from Raleigh for their operating<lb />
expenses. Frequently we get<lb />
extra money for books, but<lb />
hardly ever for extra help he<lb />
said.<lb />
The prospects for the future<lb />
do not seem to favor any large<lb />
increase in the library's budget.<lb />
Smiley noted that Governor<lb />
DanK. Moore, before leaving<lb />
office, did not recommend any<lb />
increase in the budget.<lb />
To SOULS<lb />
I found your list of demands<lb />
most interesting, such as the<lb />
proportioning of instructors If<lb />
you obtain black instructors in<lb />
the same ratio as white<lb />
instructors to white students<lb />
you will have 5.22 instructors<lb />
