ECU Forum<lb />
A letter in today's Forum complains about the Popular-<lb />
Entertainment Committee's selection of concerts saying: that<lb />
the poor reception given to many entertainers by student-<lb />
is because of the poor quality of the entertainments.<lb />
The author cites a few examples to prove his point, con-<lb />
cluding that the SGA should forget all kinds of concerts ex-<lb />
cept those presented by "sure-fire Male vocalists.<lb />
Several misconceptions prevail throughout this attempl<lb />
to provide insight into the quality of East Carolina concerts.<lb />
First none of the shows booked by the Popular Enter-<lb />
tainments Committee are perfect for every student on cam-<lb />
pus. As long as people are people, tastes will van- Not every<lb />
student likes soul; not every student enjoys the classics. Uw<lb />
Entertainments Committee attempts to provide a show for<lb />
every taste on campus.<lb />
Every student on this campus either knows, or can easily<lb />
learn, what type of music each entertainer offers. The stu-<lb />
dent can know before he picks up his ticket if the entertain-<lb />
ment offered caters to his taste. And if, on the very outside<lb />
chance that he does not, he will know by intermission if he<lb />
is enjoyine the show. That is the best time to leave, it neces-<lb />
sary.<lb />
No, the walkouts that plague many of the East Carolina<lb />
concerts are not the result of student discontent with the qual-<lb />
ity of the shows. They are for entirely different reasons . .<lb />
reasons like haste to leave the parking lot, or hast, to gel<lb />
downtown for a beer.<lb />
The author of this letter indicates that he feels this is<lb />
the accepted way of showing dissatisfaction with a perform-<lb />
ance. It is the hope of this Editor that he is speaking facetious-<lb />
ly, for such behavior has never been, and is not now. the<lb />
East Carolina University way.<lb />
The statement that the SG'A should forget all but -sure-<lb />
fire male vocalists" is equally fallacious. The SGA Enter-<lb />
tainment Committee has the duty of serving the entire Eas1<lb />
Carolina University student body. If the guidelines set by<lb />
this critic were followed by the committee, this responsibility<lb />
to the entire student body would be overlooked.<lb />
And if the poll taken by the Entertainment Committee is<lb />
any indication, the student body wants something besides<lb />
"sure-fire male vocalists witness the votes received by<lb />
Sergio Mendes and Brasil '6(5. Roger Williams. Simon and<lb />
Garfunkel, and The Four Tops.<lb />
There are problems for the Entertainment Committee:<lb />
problems like a lack of funds Lo draw the most popular<lb />
groups to this campus, and the unwillingness of some per-<lb />
formers to play college concerts. There is also the problem<lb />
students who walk out on performers while the show is<lb />
progress.<lb />
No Mr. McCorkel, the major problem with the concerts<lb />
presented on this campus is not the fault of the Popular En-<lb />
tertainment Committee. The blame must fall on the students<lb />
who fail to care enough to observe courtesy to the performs<lb />
on the stage. Such courtesy is the East Carolina University<lb />
way, regardless of whether or not the performance is es-<lb />
pecially interesting to the individual spectator.<lb />

To Whom it May Concern:<lb />
It appears to me that the choice<lb />

it is pointed out that "Life on<lb />
the Mississippi River . . . was a<lb />
curious combination of fun an<lb />
work"? ' . . curious combination<lb />
"indeed: the whites had all<lb />
the fun. while the blacks toiled in<lb />
the fields from sunup to sundown.<lb />
On one of the floats, there was a<lb />
scene depicting a restaurant or<lb />
gambling parlor on what I think<lb />
was a rlverboat. Good, white peo-<lb />
ple sat about playing cards or<lb />
drinking. One white man. though,<lb />
did neither. He had charcoal smear-<lb />

What went through their minds?<lb />
My basic p mt here is not mere-<lb />
ly thai the people responsible for<lb />
this showed the insensitivity of<lb />
which I have already spoken, but<lb />
that they missed an opportunity to<lb />
show that East Carolina is not still<lb />
living in the past but has moved<lb />
forward to the point of recogniz-<lb />
ing that all human beings have<lb />
feelings and that university stu-<lb />
dents have become more sensitive<lb />
tthe feelings of others than those<lb />
no1 privileged to have a university<lb />
education. Intsead of merely ac-<lb />
cepting the values of the surround-<lb />

a chance this past weekend to be<lb />
a leader m helping to shape con-<lb />
structive reform by showing that<lb />
educated men and women do. in-<lb />
deed, recognize the problems fac-<lb />
ing our nation today and are will-<lb />
ing to deal with them in a humane<lb />
and intelligent manner. What if<lb />

Mother's Protest<lb />

I want to register a protest. It<lb />
seems that the judges of our<lb />
House Decorations prefer "paper<lb />

imagination, work, and thought on<lb />
our theme of the year (Mississippi).<lb />
Why?<lb />
I do not mind your using my<lb />

"My men" worked so hard to<lb />

In your Nov. 12 issue, you criti-<lb />

in this country today it Is com-<lb />

So what is the SGA to do?<lb />
Look at the facts:<lb />

Platterssecond rate soul 'many<lb />

I don't think we should consider<lb />
the Lemon Pipers, because of their<lb />
technical difficulties- and they pre-<lb />
ceded Neil Diamond.<lb />
Therefore. I think that In the<lb />
future we should get some 'top-<lb />

Dear Editor:<lb />
At the outset of this letter I<lb />
would like to make it very clear<lb />
that the following is written in all<lb />
seriousness in order to call your<lb />
attention to a situation which might<lb />
otherwise go unnoticed.<lb />
Since the day of Monday. Oc-<lb />
tober 14, all the chewing gum ma-<lb />
chines have been refilled with stale<lb />
gum. Stale chewing gum can be<lb />
recognized by its uneven, bulgy<lb />
shape and the white splotches in<lb />
its crust, (these splotches arc most<lb />
in evidence on the green and orange<lb />
balls When bitten, the coating of<lb />
stale gum will crack into a few<lb />
large pieces instead of blending<lb />
with the inside, making the whole<lb />
mish-ma-sh very tough and hard to<lb />
chew. This, in addition to the flat<lb />
and somewhat sour taste, assures<lb />
a most unpleasant experience for<lb />
the unwary chewer. Here, I would<lb />
also like to point out that the ?um<lb />
of which I am writing is that of<lb />
the round variety; the square kind<lb />
is usually fresh, but there is only<lb />
one machine on campus, has it.<lb />
The nature of the gum Is bad<lb />
enough, but my friends and I have<lb />
noticed'that while the gum on cam-<lb />
pus is always stale, that bo be<lb />
found in the machines uptown !<lb />
invariably FRESH! Must ECU suf-<lb />
fer this indignity? It is, therefore,<lb />
my suggestion that the SGA re-<lb />
quest the Lion s Club or the com-<lb />
pany which services the machines,<lb />
if such be the case, tl.<lb />
start refilling the campus e<lb />
chinu with fresh gum. Thank yot'<lb />
very much.<lb />
Sincerely your<lb />

Miss Dolores Boaz, a 1968 graduate of Eastaroliiu University, has<lb />
accepted a commission as a nurse in the V. S. Air Force.<lb />
Major L. D. Bunn, Jr commander of Air Force recruiting activities<lb />
in Central and Eastern North Carolina, auiinistered the oath of office<lb />
to Miss Boaz recently in her hometown of Fairmont. She has a bachelor<lb />
of science degree in nursing the field in which she received a two-year<lb />
com mission.<lb />
Give your<lb />
contact lenses<lb />
a bath<lb />
tonight<lb />
In order to keep your contact lenses as<lb />
comfortable and convenient as they were<lb />
meant to be, you have to take care of<lb />
them. But until now you needed two or<lb />
more separate solutions to properly<lb />
prepare and maintain your contacts. Not<lb />
with Lensine. Lensine is the one lens<lb />
solution for complete contact lens care.<lb />
Cleaning your contacts with Lensine<lb />
retards the buildup of foreign deposits on<lb />
the lenses. And soaking your contacts in<lb />
Lensine overnight assures you of proper<lb />
lens hygiene. You get a free soaking case<lb />
on the bottom of every bottle of Lensine.<lb />
It has been demonstrated that improper<lb />
storage between wearings may result in<lb />
the growth of bacteria on the lenses.<lb />
This is a sure cause of eye irritation and<lb />
in some cases can endanger your vision.<lb />
Bacteria cannot grow in Lensine which is<lb />
sterile, self-sanitizing, and antiseptic.<lb />
Just a drop or two of Lensine, before you<lb />
insert vour lens, coats and lubricates it<lb />
allowing the lens to float more freely in<lb />
the eye's fluids. That's because<lb />
Lensine is an "isotonic" solution,<lb />
which means that it blends with<lb />
the natural fluids of the eye.<lb />
Let your contacts be the<lb />
convenience they were<lb />
meant to be. Get<lb />
