Police Blow Their Cool<lb/>
Poor taste and disgraceful behavior are never excusable,<lb/>
and the Greenville Police Department put themselves squarely<lb/>
in both categories Saturday afternoon with their actions to-<lb/>
ward alcoholic beverages among the student body at the foot-<lb/>
hn.11 ffimp<lb/>
It is true that North Carolina law forbids the "public dis-<lb/>
play" of intoxicating beverages at athletic contests. It is equal-<lb/>
ly true that some East Carolina students were guilty of viola-<lb/>
tion of that statute. But when members of the Greenville-<lb/>
police force began making personal searches, drink sampling,<lb/>
and breath smelling, they overstepped their bounds in law<lb/>
enforcement.<lb/>
It may never have occurred to these officers that some<lb/>
of the people they were so readily checking may not have been<lb/>
guilty of any violation of the law. Those who were thus false-<lb/>
ly scrutinized may justifiably feel persecuted, and as such<lb/>
might not be willing to overlook the offense.<lb/>
The biggest complaint of many students who were thus<lb/>
checked is that such action takes on the appearance of a double-<lb/>
standard, for few, if any, of the spectators on the opposite<lb/>
side of the field from the students were thus checked.<lb/>
The question is not a question of the morality of the ally for she has been on either the JJJ candSates ywho<lb/>
consumption of alcholic beverages at athletic contests; it is Deans List or the HomMiiW the university Par<lb/>
rather a question of the legality and reasonableness of sue)<lb/>
searches by city police officers.<lb/>
If such displays of wanton disregard for the rights of<lb/>
the individual continue, the Greenville police force will give<lb/>
itself an unmendable bad name, and might well provoke an-<lb/>
tagonistic reaction on the part of some persons who were thus<lb/>
unreasonably searched.<lb/>
Most sudents are willing to admit the need for some form<lb/>
of legal authority at such mass gatherings as football games,<lb/>
but when that authority takes the form it took at Saturday's<lb/>
game, reasonable minds agree that the time has come for a<lb/>
change.<lb/>

Dear Juniors,<lb/>
When most of us first came to<lb/>
East Carolina College two years<lb/>
ago, we were wide-eyed and naive<lb/>
to the new way of,life which was<lb/>
waiting for us. Now many things<lb/>
have changed. We are more mature<lb/>
and aware. We are assimilated.<lb/>
East Carolina has also changed. It<lb/>
is progressive and rapid-changing.<lb/>
It is a University. Two years ago,<lb/>
he University Party was young<lb/>
nd inexperienced but, like East<lb/>
Carolina and ourselves, it has pro-<lb/>
gressed rapidly, in these two years,<lb/>
we have realized privileges which<lb/>
many never thought possible. The<lb/>
University Party has been quite in-<lb/>
trumental in this progression and<lb/>
change. As their candidate for Jun-<lb/>

anxious for the chance to serve<lb/>
our class and East Carolina Uni-<lb/>

Debbie Sheehan<lb/>
Dear Members of the Junior Class,<lb/>
In your forthcoming election of<lb/>
class officers, it is imperative that<lb/>
you choose candidates with both<lb/>
qualifcations and experience.<lb/>
As a class, you are entitled to a<lb/>
treasurer wno can handle your fi-<lb/>
nancial obligation accurately and<lb/>
expediently. With these necessities<lb/>
in mind, I endorse Debbie Sheehan,<lb/>
Student Party Candidate for Jr.<lb/>
Class Treasurer.<lb/>
Dear Editor:<lb/>
My wishes are that each student<lb/>
had a fine summer and is now-<lb/>
ready for a very prosperous year<lb/>
I would like to ask each student<lb/>
to start right now and become<lb/>
involved in his student govern-<lb/>
ment by supporting the candidates<lb/>
for office in this Wednesday's leg-<lb/>
islative and class officer elections.<lb/>
The questions of who are the<lb/>
candidates, what are the issues,<lb/>
and which party is he affiliated<lb/>
with, are major deciding factors<lb/>
in this election. It is my privilege<lb/>
to present to you a complete slate<lb/>
are running on<lb/>
University Party Ticket. These<lb/>
fifty two candidates are united to<lb/>
one purpose, and united behind a<lb/>
very progressive platform!<lb/>
The University Party executive<lb/>
officer slate was elected last spring<lb/>
and in the l2 months of the spring<lb/>
term, completed 4 of the 10 plat-<lb/>
form goals. Later hours for wo-<lb/>
men students, the establishment of<lb/>
a secretary of Instiutional Im-<lb/>
provement, the appointment of a<lb/>
Secretary of Public Relations, and<lb/>
the formation of a committee to<lb/>
increase foreign students enroll-<lb/>
ment, were the four planks com-<lb/>
pleted.<lb/>
It is necessary for the executive<lb/>
officers of the SGA to have com-<lb/>
plete support from the SGA legis-<lb/>
lators and class officers in order<lb/>
to continue the progress and com-<lb/>
plete the high goals of the Uni-<lb/>
versity Party for ECU. We, as stu-<lb/>
dents of a growing student Uni-<lb/>
versity do not have the time to<lb/>
spend on the petty differences and<lb/>
arguments that would arise if the<lb/>
opposing party candidates were<lb/>
elected to the SGA.<lb/>
If you, the jtudents, support the<lb/>
progress already demonstrated by<lb/>
the University Party, then I urge<lb/>
you to support the continuation of<lb/>
this progress by electing the Uni-<lb/>
versity Party slate of officers pre-<lb/>
sented in this election.<lb/>
Please do not fail to call on me<lb/>
if I may be of help to any one of<lb/>
you.<lb/>
David R. Lloyd<lb/>
President of the SGA<lb/>
Experience Counts<lb/>
To the Editor,<lb/>
I would like to urge the students<lb/>
at East Carolina University to vote<lb/>
in the up-coming election. This is<lb/>
perhaps the first time in the history<lb/>
of East Carolina when so many are<lb/>
running for so much and saying<lb/>
so little. As potential voters, you<lb/>
will hear, "I support the Student<lb/>
Bill of Rights, vote for me "I<lb/>
believe in student power, vote for<lb/>
me 'T stand up for law and or-<lb/>
der, vote for me "I am against<lb/>
radical hippy students, vote for<lb/>
me<lb/>
It is the old problem. Everyone<lb/>
is interested in getting elected, and<lb/>
and very few are Interested If<lb/>
talking about concrete program<lb/>
and ideas that they have, that they<lb/>
would like to put through. And, even<lb/>
more important, very few are in-<lb/>
terested in talking about their quali-<lb/>
fications. And if they are not quali-<lb/>
fied, their ideas will get nowhere<lb/>
fast.<lb/>
In light of this, In the hope that<lb/>
the qualifications of the few W?<lb/>
not be drowned out by the many-<lb/>
would urge the students at Ea<lb/>
Carolina to look at the qualifica-<lb/>
tions of the candidates.<lb/>
Personally, I would like to en-1<lb/>
dorse every candidate who was I<lb/>
member of the legislature. Thetf<lb/>
people worked hard on their com-<lb/>
mittees last year, and as le&is'<lb/>

that he will execute his duties<lb/>
with pioficiency. I had the privi-<lb/>

To the editor,<lb/>
I see the office of president as<lb/>
a challenge and an opportunity.<lb/>
A challenge in the sense that it<lb/>
brings great responsibility upon the<lb/>
holder of office. An opportunity<lb/>
where the holder would be able to<lb/>
put into practice his ideals for the<lb/>
job.<lb/>
I believe the sophomore class<lb/>
should be the focal point of more<lb/>
responsible interest and service both<lb/>
to and for East Carolina Univer-<lb/>
sity.<lb/>
My ideal is to make the stu-<lb/>
dents aware that only through<lb/>
their interest and support will the<lb/>
University serve them best.<lb/>
As a voter myself, I want an<lb/>
active president not one who seeks<lb/>
only the name of the office. I feel<lb/>
as if I could and would be an ac-<lb/>

I have qualifications, but I don't<lb/>

know them I would gladly take<lb/>
time to tell them.<lb/>

To be candid, there was much to<lb/>

These are the things the students<lb/>

Steve Davis<lb/>
s jphomores,<lb/>
Many of you already know who I<lb/>
am and my reasons for running<lb/>
for Sophomore Class Vice-Presi-<lb/>
dent, but. of course, many do not.<lb/>
My purpose for writing this letter<lb/>
is to acquaint you with these facts.<lb/>
My name is Steve Davis; I'm<lb/>
from Raleigh and I'm a hard-core<lb/>
Southern Baptist. I want to be con-<lb/>
sidered as your candidate for of-<lb/>
fice because of my advocacy of a<lb/>
strong student government. It is<lb/>
extremely important that there be<lb/>
a liaison between the SGA and<lb/>
the students, and it is Imperative<lb/>
that such a link exist if the stu-<lb/>
dents are to be represented equal-<lb/>
ly and justly. I offer myself as<lb/>
just such a liason based on my<lb/>
experience as Freshman Class<lb/>
Vice-Presiednt. I learned a great<lb/>
deal last year, and now I want<lb/>
to apply this knowledge for the<lb/>
benefit fo the Sophomore Class.<lb/>
The reasons for my candidacy.<lb/>
however, go far beyond personal<lb/>
desires and ambitions. I am also<lb/>
a staunch believer in school tra-<lb/>

- Two Candidates Speak Out<lb/>
For Freshman President<lb/>
FRESHMAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES<lb/>
Charles Tursdale<lb/>
To Whom It May Concern:<lb/>
Fellow freshmen of East Caro-<lb/>
lina University, I would like to<lb/>
toll you a little about myself and<lb/>
my policies.<lb/>
My first objective is to win tne<lb/>
-upport of every student no mat-<lb/>
ter which party they represent.<lb/>
I'm an independent and I don t<lb/>
have to answer to any of the Par-<lb/>
ties policies, only to the policies of<lb/>
the Freshman students. This puts<lb/>
the leadership into the hands of<lb/>
the students to be guided by the<lb/>
officers. A more unified class would<lb/>
be the result.<lb/>
I suggest, for our class, a Fresh-<lb/>
man Class Council. In this council<lb/>
representatives, chosen by the stu-<lb/>
dents and the Executive Council<lb/>
would discuss problems and ideas<lb/>
to work out solutions for the bet-<lb/>
terment of the Freshman Class.<lb/>
I am candidate for Fr. Class pres-<lb/>
ident because I feel I can institute a<lb/>
strong and meaningful government<lb/>
for the Freshmen at ECU. I serv-<lb/>
ed on the Student Council all four<lb/>
years in High School. The Student<lb/>
Co-Operative Association of Vir-<lb/>
ginia my Junior year, and Sr. Class<lb/>
Three Enter Election Race<lb/>
For Sophomore Class Secretary<lb/>
Patricia Thompson<lb/>
My Fellow Sophomores,<lb/>
Mv only wish is that there were<lb/>
some way I would share with you<lb/>
my sincere desire to serve you as<lb/>
your Stophomore Class Secretary.<lb/>
In this hustling academic year, it<lb/>
seems strange to think of people<lb/>
as being sincere in their emotions<lb/>
and desires. But I could not be<lb/>
more truthful when I state that<lb/>
I want to serve you and serve you<lb/>
well.<lb/>
In the past, I have held numer-<lb/>
our campus capacities which will.<lb/>
without a doubt, augment my abili-<lb/>
ties to serve you best. For these<lb/>
reasons, I respecfully request that<lb/>
you support me in the up-coming<lb/>
campus elections.<lb/>
Thank you.<lb/>
Patricia Thompson<lb/>
Sue Dashill<lb/>
In the upcoming election, it is<lb/>
important that each voter be in-<lb/>
formed of each candidate's quali-<lb/>
fications so that he may make his<lb/>
choice wisely.<lb/>
Last Monday night, Sue Dashill<lb/>
was selected by members of the<lb/>
Student Party to run for the office<lb/>
of Sophomore Class Secretary. The<lb/>
Student Party is composed of peo-<lb/>
ple who are representative of the<lb/>
voting student body. Surely these<lb/>
people have a reason for selecting<lb/>
Sue Dashill as their candidate. S'ue<lb/>
Dashill was chosen because she is<lb/>
qualified for the job. This qualifi-<lb/>
cation is illustrated by her record<lb/>
of leadership and participation in<lb/>
high school and her freshman year<lb/>
in college. She was editor in chief<lb/>
of her high school yearbook, presi-<lb/>
dent, of Virginia Industrial Clubs<lb/>
of America and a member of the<lb/>
National Honor Society. She re-<lb/>
ceived numerous awards on both<lb/>
local and state levels for talent<lb/>
and capability. As a freshman at<lb/>
East Carolina, Sue was vice-presi-<lb/>
dent of Buccaneer Courts. Building<lb/>
3, she headed an S.G.A. Commit-<lb/>
tee to study day student griev-<lb/>
ances and the possibility of form-<lb/>
ing a Day Student Council similar<lb/>
to the WRC. Sue was also a mem-<lb/>
ber of the Spirit Committee and<lb/>
helped prepare for the MAR Dele-<lb/>
gation to the Model UN.<lb/>
As you can see, S'ue Dashill is<lb/>

think, your vote will be cast for<lb/>
Sue Dashill as Sophomore Class<lb/>
Secretary. Thank you.<lb/>

Suzanne Jenkins<lb/>
To the Editor:<lb/>
I would like to take this oppor-<lb/>
tunity to express my reasons for<lb/>
supporting Suzanne Jenkins as a<lb/>
candidate for Soplv.more class<lb/>
treasurer.<lb/>
Suzanne is well qualified for this<lb/>
position. A Chi Omega, Suzanne<lb/>
served as treasurer of her pledge<lb/>
class and knows the responsibili-<lb/>
ties of the position. Her sorority<lb/>
sisters renewed their confidence in<lb/>
Suzanne by electing her Assistant<lb/>
House Manager this year. Suzanne<lb/>
showed her enthusiasm for E.C.U.<lb/>
as one of the most energetic J.V.<lb/>
cheerleaders last year. She is a<lb/>
member of the ECU Young Demo-<lb/>
crats' Club and a fine representa-<lb/>
tive of East Carolina at many func-<lb/>
tions of uor sate and local govern-<lb/>
ments. She has maintained a 2.5<lb/>
average.<lb/>
Suzanne and I served together<lb/>
as Pagettes in the North Carolina<lb/>
Senate in 1965. Working with her,<lb/>
I became aware of her interest and<lb/>
concern in state as well as stu-<lb/>
dent politics.<lb/>
Having corresponded and ex-<lb/>
changed visits with Suzanne since<lb/>
that, time, I have come to know<lb/>
the value of a true friend. Our<lb/>
friendship means a lot to me, but<lb/>
it is not simply because of this<lb/>
friendship that I endorse her. I<lb/>
believe, knowing Suzanne as I do,<lb/>
that her sincerity, honesty and her<lb/>
involvement with her fellow stu-<lb/>
dents can and will be generated<lb/>
into our student government if we,<lb/>
the Sophomores of East Carolina<lb/>
University, elect and support Su-<lb/>
zanne Jenkins as our class Treas-<lb/>
urer.<lb/>

Fellow Students:<lb/>
I am running lor your ire.sh-<lb/>

1 easons. First of all I want to put<lb/>
the power in the students' hands;<lb/>
not the legislature. Most of all 1<lb/>
would like to see the freshman<lb/>
class looked upon as o?xe of the<lb/>
most important classes in the Uni-<lb/>

I feel that I am quite capable<lb/>
of taking on the leadership and re-<lb/>
sponsibilities required for the of-<lb/>
fice. I WU vice-president of my<lb/>
freshman class in high school. I<lb/>
have been on the student council<lb/>
all four years and have worked<lb/>
with the North Carolina S.C.A.<lb/>
convention. I have been chairman<lb/>
of various committees such as pub-<lb/>
licity, social, safety patrol, and fu-<lb/>

Students, from these qualifica-<lb/>

I feel I could do the best possible<lb/>

Dear Classmates:<lb/>
I have decided to run for the<lb/>
office of Freshman Class Treasu-<lb/>
? It is for you, the Freshman<lb/>
Class of 1972, that I am running.<lb/>
T firmly believe in this statement,<lb/>
and I am willing to undertake the<lb/>
possibility of upholding it. <lb/>
I think I have gained some ex-<lb/>
perence in High School that will<lb/>
help me to respond to such an ob-<lb/>
ligation. This experience has come<lb/>
from participation in Beta Club,<lb/>
Student Council, Annual Staff,<lb/>
FBLA. Monogram Club, Glee Club,<lb/>
Athletics, Boys' State, and school<lb/>
projects. I have found that partici-<lb/>
pation in groups such as these is<lb/>
very interesting and worthwhile.<lb/>
The Freshman Clp s is my main<lb/>
concern at the moment. I want<lb/>
to do everything I can to make it<lb/>
the greatest Freshman Class that<lb/>
was ever at East Carolina Univer-<lb/>
sity. I am laying my assistance<lb/>
down before you, the Class of 1972.<lb/>
As Treasurer, I would be delighted<lb/>
to be the Class' right-hand man in<lb/>

as other beneficial matters.<lb/>

To Whom It May Concern:<lb/>
As a candidate for Secretary of<lb/>
the Freshman class at East Caro-<lb/>

you why I think I am qualfled to<lb/>
hold this position.<lb/>
I have great Interest in the gov-<lb/>
ernment of my class and the opera-<lb/>
tion of East Carolina University.<lb/>
In high school, I held homeroom<lb/>
Hces and was active in the Young<lb/>
- emocrats Club, Teen-Dems, and<lb/>
worked extensively in various politi-<lb/>
cal and social organizations.<lb/>
I became involved this past year<lb/>
in Eugene McCarthys political<lb/>
campaign, both in New Hampshire<lb/>
and North Carolina, and visited the<lb/>
Chicago convention, with the op-<lb/>
portunity of seeing how govern-<lb/>
ment worked, in practice. I work-<lb/>
ed in McCarthy headquarters<lb/>
there, and learned much about or-<lb/>
ganization.<lb/>
If I am elected, I will be re-<lb/>
sponsible to my office, to the Stu-<lb/>
dent Government Association, and<lb/>
to the Freshman class.<lb/>
Betsee Sanford<lb/>
Randy Longworth<lb/>
I feel I can work to make the<lb/>
class more than Just freshmen.<lb/>
Such work would include fostering<lb/>
freshmen interest in campus activi-<lb/>
ties and arousing school spirit. If<lb/>
the class of '72 is to evolve with<lb/>
the potential to secure objectives,<lb/>
the class must begin to speak now.<lb/>
In order for it to be heard, the<lb/>
class must have its spokesmen. As<lb/>
a class officer I pledge to voice<lb/>
the desires of the freshman in be-<lb/>
half of the university.<lb/>
If past records are sufficient evi-<lb/>
dences for fuutre accomplish-<lb/>
ments, I can provide such a list.<lb/>
Not only was I involved with the<lb/>
students, tut I was able to voice<lb/>
opinion to the faculty. When not<lb/>
serving in the student government,<lb/>
I was active on the schools student<lb/>
vestry and participated in athletics.<lb/>

I might have braces, stringy<lb/>
hair, and big feet, but somewhere<lb/>
between those "number nines"<lb/>
and the "Mop" there is a great<lb/>
big heart. This heart covets one<lb/>
thing, and this is to serve you, my<lb/>
friends, and my class, and my<lb/>
school, to the best of my ability.<lb/>
I am proud to be a member of the<lb/>

As Secretary of the Freshman<lb/>

much time and hard work to this<lb/>
