Appropriates Finances<lb />
The first session of the 1968<lb />
Summer School SGA Legislature<lb />
met on Thursday, June 27th to dis-<lb />
cuss and vote on the many issues<lb />
facing the students on this campus.<lb />
The first item on the agenda which<lb />
was very full was the election of<lb />
the speaker. Steve Michael defeat-<lb />

in a very close election. Mr. Cherry<lb />
Stokes installed the speaker and<lb />
the meeting was continued with an<lb />
amendment to the canaWtution<lb />
stating that the Treasurer elected<lb />
in the spring will also be the Trea-<lb />

was done in order that the books<lb />
would be kept by the same person,<lb />
therefore, having less errors and a<lb />
more systematic bookkeeping sys-<lb />

bo the Rules Committee for one<lb />
week which is the standard pro-<lb />

Mr. Buford Davis, SGA Treasur-<lb />
er, moved to appropriate the follow-<lb />
ing budgets: Photography, ID<lb />
Cards, Popular Popular en-<lb />
tertainment, FuU-time salaries, and<lb />
SGA Executive Council. There was<lb />
much discussion on each of the<lb />
budgets, but they passed with a<lb />
minimum of changes. Gary Gas-<lb />
perini moved that Jack Hart, Ace<lb />
Atkins, and Lee Blackwell be ap-<lb />
proved by the legislature for the<lb />
President's Cabinet. They were ap-<lb />
proved. Dean Alexander proposed<lb />
that the SGA appropriate $75.00 to<lb />
purchase three flags for Ficklen<lb />

three of a set of Conference flags<lb />
which we already have. This was<lb />
approved by a large majority.<lb />

addition to the motive of simple patriotism, most of<lb />
the 81 .dents (in this campus need a holiday, especially sinc<lb />
there is no such thing between summer sessions.<lb />
certainly seems a shame that when so many of the<lb />
students on this campus both want and nevd to take a day ofl<lb />
for a national holiday, the calendar runs straight through.<lb />
with no break, yet leaving almost two weeks vacant at the end<lb />

After discussion with several ol<lb />
the participating students, no for-<lb />
um has been planned for this sum-<lb />
mer, due to several reasons.<lb />
First, the short period of time<lb />
during summer school requires<lb />
more tune on the part of students<lb />
for study if they want to obtain<lb />
good grades<lb />
Second, the changeover of stu-<lb />
dents from session to session doe<lb />
not allow us to form any type of<lb />
agenda committee thai would carry<lb />
over through the fall. If we formed<lb />
an agenda committee this summer.<lb />
we would ut our people who will<lb />

making it virtually Impossible to<lb />

Roaches, Rats Run<lb />
In Dorm Invasion<lb />
By CHLOE CRAWFORD<lb />
Ahhhhh Run for your lives<lb />
The roaches are racing with the<lb />
rats to invade Garrett. These pests<lb />

torn-down Jarvis Dorm. A few roa-<lb />

roaches have been spotted as<lb />
far down campus as Fletcher.<lb />

have been pretty lrowded for so<lb />
many years in a three story dorm<lb />
when it takes now a three story<lb />
and a seven story dorm to acdom-<lb />

However, the worse is yet to<lb />

when old faithful Cotton is finally<lb />
demolished. The Humane Society<lb />
Will lose their cool. ECU will be<lb />
accussed for destroying the home<lb />

Whoops! Little? Rumor has it that<lb />

War Flick Proves<lb />
Good For Doves<lb />
After having seen The Dirty<lb />
D"zen I thoiiRht that a better<lb />
war flick was far away, but "The<lb />
Devil's Brigade" proved me wrong.<lb />
This story is about the first Spec-<lb />

during World War II. The movie<lb />
moves along swiftly and humorous-<lb />
ly throughout the training of Amer-<lb />
ica's worst and Canada best sol-<lb />
diers.<lb />
Competition is the name of the<lb />
iim in this degenerated camp<lb />
with the Canadians and Americans<lb />
trying to better each other in train-<lb />
ing. Upon their graduation, the<lb />
entire brigade gets bombed out of<lb />
their minds, and proceeds to beat<lb />
(lie hell out of a group rf lumber-<lb />

Eater, they prove themselves in<lb />
h'tle scenes befitting Superman<lb />

recommend it for doves, so that<lb />
they can see how a war should be<lb />

To help prepare for what the<lb />
football staff considers the tough-<lb />
est schedule yet at East Carolina,<lb />
letters have been sent out to the<lb />
70 varsity prospects with Instruc-<lb />
tions on workouts and their report-<lb />
ing weight.<lb />
The staff figures that six weeks<lb />
is the minimum time needed for<lb />
players to get in shape for the<lb />
first workouts which begin on<lb />
August 27.<lb />
Around 60-65 freshmen candidat-<lb />
es are expected to come out.<lb />

As a sign of an increasingly sue<lb />
cesful athletic program, more and<lb />
more people are joining the booster<lb />
clubs and buying season tickets.<lb />
Both the Pirates Club and the<lb />
Century Club show increasing<lb />
memberships, as each is Bearing<lb />
500 members, which is the highest<lb />
either has been. Season ticket hold-<lb />
ers numbered 1300 last year, but a<lb />
figure of 1500 seems within reach<lb />
for this upcoming season.<lb />
New Rivalries<lb />
Another sign of a growing ath-<lb />
letic program is the opening of<lb />
new rivalries, such as the one with<lb />
N.C. State in 1970 to play football<lb />
Further in the future, it. is hoped<lb />
that schools like Duke, UNC, and<lb />
Wake Foresl will be happy to play<lb />
the Pirates This will not likelv<lb />

The East Carolina University Ath-<lb />

signing of two outstanding boys to<lb />
football grants-in-aid. The two who<lb />
were announced were two Tarheels<lb />
from Mount Airy who were select-<lb />
ed to play in the North-South All-<lb />
Star game.<lb />
Both George Snyder and Alike<lb />
Stockner, who played under Coach<lb />
Charles Atkins at Mount Airy, were<lb />
selected for the North-South All-<lb />
Star game. Snyder is a 6-0, 168<lb />
pound quarterback and Stockner is<lb />
a 6-2, 208 pound fullback.<lb />
Coach Harold Bullard, who sign-<lb />
ed both boys, believes that Sn ler<lb />
will make a good defensive safety<lb />
for the Pirates. As for Stockner, he<lb />
is strong, tough, and has a lot of<lb />
potential. He is expected to see<lb />
action at fullback.<lb />

Hope To Gel In Big I Country<lb />

Carolina has played only one in<lb />
football, and has a 1-0 record. On<lb />
.i day when Ficklen Stadium was<lb />
being dedicated, the Pirates thump-<lb />
ed I lie Wake Ernes! Deacons by 20-<lb />
10 Tins leads into another prob-<lb />
lem m scheduling. Some schools<lb />
just do not want to play us. They<lb />
would rather play easier schools.<lb />
which r think is quite a compli-<lb />
ment to the athletic program here<lb />
at Ea i Jarolina.<lb />
Many people have always con-<lb />
sidered ECU as a "little" institu-<lb />
tion, but it's not. While most scho-<lb />
ols do n it consider us to be a pow-<lb />
erhouse, we certainly are consider-<lb />
ed to lie the "slumbering giant<lb />
which might wake up at any minute<lb />
and smite some big name school.<lb />
Wake Forest couldn't gel over the<lb />
stigma oi' the defeat by a "little"<lb />
institution. It bothered them so<lb />
much, that their head football coa-<lb />
ch and athletic director went on<lb />
a vacation the following year.<lb />
But, even running into occasion-<lb />
al problems such as this, East<lb />
Carolina football is on the move<lb />
upward.<lb />
Future Schedules To Be Better<lb />
Future scheduling should bring<lb />
in top notch teams after the 1971<lb />
season. By 1973, six Southern Con-<lb />
ference games will be on tap tc<lb />
start the conference round robin<lb />
play. Other schools are showing<lb />
interest in playing the Pirates, like<lb />
Toledo and Dayton. With the sched-<lb />
uling of N. C. State, comes the first<lb />
real breakthrough for East Caro-<lb />
lina into the Big Four territory<lb />
And with it. the name will change<lb />
to the Big Five.<lb />

and installation of the aluminum<lb />
