2East CarolinianSummer. 1968<lb />
Freshmen, Welcome!<lb />
I<lb />
i i<lb />
I<lb />
Following a precedent set by last year's staff of the EAST<lb />
CAROLINIAN, it is our pleasure to welcome you to East<lb />
Carolina University and the Greenville area with this Fresh-<lb />
man Orientation Issue.<lb />
This edition of our newspaper, which goes out bi-weekly<lb />
during the regular academic year and once per week during<lb />
the summer session, is directed to you. the incoming freshman.<lb />
We have prepared this special edition with the specific<lb />
hope of acquainting you with the many and varied things<lb />
that make up East Carolina University. Our advertisers have<lb />
taken this opportunity to welcome you. and express their in-<lb />
terest in your patronage.<lb />
But we of the staff have yet another goal to accomplish<lb />
with the production of this issue. It is our sincere hope to<lb />
acquaint you with this newspaper, and the service it perform?<lb />
to the Easl Carolina University Student body.<lb />
We strongly encourage you to come by our office on th<lb />
third floor of Wright Building and (alk with us about the<lb />
fund the FAST I AROLINIAN. We will be more than<lb />
happy to talk to you and explain all facets of the production<lb />
of th spaper.<lb />
Drive For Excellence<lb />
Ai freshmen once again come to the East Carolina Uni-<lb />
versity campus, the stage is set for the beginning of anothei<lb />
phase in the school's drive for excellence.<lb />
This excellence for the 1968-69 academic year can besl<lb />
be promoted by one thing from the incoming freshmenpar-<lb />
ticipation. College consists of many things: books, new friends,<lb />
parties, classes, student government, publications, sports, and<lb />
many, many more.<lb />
Each of them lias a worthwhile contribution to make to<lb />
the new student. Each one will go a long way toward produc-<lb />
ing the energetic and well-informed citizens our country so<lb />
desperately needs.<lb />
.All the many varied activities that make up the<lb />
hive campus of East Carolina University contribute some-<lb />
thing to the production of quality education. They all will h<lb />
interesting and often very exciting.<lb />
However, there is one thing that very often misses th<lb />
notice of the new freshman student. All too often freshmen<lb />
look at these activities as something that can offer, but never<lb />
need to receive.<lb />
This is far from the case. Each of these requires the full<lb />
cooperation of every student on this campus. Athletics need<lb />
participation, but even more they need support from even<lb />
student here. Entertainments need both students attendance<lb />
and assistance in order to assure success. Student Govern-<lb />
ment car not operate effectively unless students show interesl<lb />
and are willing to work on the multitude of committees need-<lb />
ed for excellence of performance. All four publications need,<lb />
and solicit, more student help.<lb />
These things can be of little value to the student if he<lb />
fails to take advantage of them. Running home every weekend<lb />
accomplishes little, neither for the student nor for East Caro-<lb />
lina University.<lb />
The best advice this editor can give any incoming fresh-<lb />
man is the old, trite line about getting involved. Despite its<lb />
triteness, however, the advice is sound, for a college educa-<lb />
tion can be much more than passing grades. It can, and should<lb />
be, one of the most rewarding experiences of human life, but<lb />
only through participation can its value be truly realized.<lb />
Study Is Fine Art<lb />
Being a good college student could possibly be added to<lb />
the growing list of fine arts. There are many adjustments<lb />
one must make in the transition from one's home life to life<lb />
on a university campus, both mental, and physical.<lb />
While the Physical Education courses will hopefully take<lb />
care of the latter, the mental adjustment of a college Fresh-<lb />
man can not be directed by anyone outside himself. Instead<lb />
of being told what to do by his parents, he will have to make<lb />
his own decisions and live his own life.<lb />
There will be many disappointed students this year, but<lb />
their unhappiness will be mainly their own fault. The main<lb />
obstacle will be their own inadequacy or refusal to adjust<lb />
to their new way of life. There will be many criticisms of the<lb />
school, the Administration, and the professors here, yet con-<lb />
ditions can be changed only by actions, and not by idle talk.<lb />
There are numerous outlets for student grievances on this<lb />
campus, but they are effective only if the students use them<lb />
to let their feelings be known.<lb />
It is not only the right, but the responsibility of each<lb />
student to take action against injustices. A campus is not made<lb />
by the buildings on it. it is whatever the students and faculty<lb />
make it.<lb />
Campus Communications Strive<lb />
For Informational Excellence<lb />
Communications are quite ade-<lb />
quately covered on the East Caro-<lb />
lina University campus, as six stu-<lb />
dent owned and operated communi-<lb />
cations media strive to keep the in-<lb />
dividual student Informed of the<lb />
events and people around him.<lb />
Of these, four are publications<lb />
which release their material in a<lb />
writ 1 en form at specified and vary-<lb />
ing Intervals of time. Each of the<lb />
lour has special merits thai dis-<lb />
tinguishes it from the other three.<lb />

Little Boxes<lb />
By Richard Foster<lb />
As college freshmen, many rich<lb />
opportunities are open to you You<lb />
can have various wonderful fun<lb />
courses here at ECU.<lb />
For your first quarter hen. I<lb />
strongly suggest that you don't<lb />
miss "Meet the Coaches com-<lb />
monly known as Health I. aired on<lb />
WECU-TV every morning at nine.<lb />
After a thrilling hour of listening<lb />
to these fine orators expound upon<lb />
the wonders of a strong body (they<lb />
may even offer you a scholarship<lb />
to play badminton), you will feel<lb />
much better when you understand<lb />
how a hangover reauy works.<lb />
Next in your day, I recommend<lb />
"Daily Travels with Captain Cram-<lb />
er beter known as Geography 15<lb />
In this course, you will learn how<lb />
vastly important earthworms really<lb />
are to the economy. Later in the<lb />
course, after your mind has ad-<lb />
justed to the general way of think-<lb />
ing, you may even learn how a<lb />
labor supply can cause a hike in<lb />
beer prices.<lb />
After these two demanding<lb />
courses, you must trot back to<lb />
your dormitory and dress in your<lb />
Formal Attire for lunch at the<lb />
cafeteria. The prices are a little<lb />
high, and the food, a little low.<lb />
For a bit of rest and relaxation<lb />
in your afternoon, you might want<lb />
to add culture to your otherwise<lb />
meaningless life. For this, I highly<lb />
advise "Fun with Jimmy other-<lb />
wise known as "Music Apprecia-<lb />
tion In this nice, progressive,<lb />
middle-class conservative class, Mr<lb />
Parnell will expose to your uncul-<lb />
tured mind such meaningful ele-<lb />
ments of music as pitch, loudness.<lb />
melody, and counterpoint. The <lb />
elements can be easny noticed any<lb />
night of the week in the 1 jal<lb />
establishments of ill repute in the<lb />
uptown Greenville area.<lb />
As a finishing- touch to your day,<lb />
Nudies. Collectively or Art 217.<lb />
will finish vour day off with a bang<lb />
After this satistymg course in the<lb />
fundamentals of artistic ideals, i.e<lb />
irec love, reform, roting. etc. you<lb />
will truly be on your way toward<lb />
becoming an educated individual<lb />
Furthermore, you will be doing<lb />
what you like best, watching TV all<lb />
day long. Of course, you must<lb />
realize you need an hour break be-<lb />
tween each class in order to sit<lb />
on the UU wall and look cool. This<lb />
is a most important part of your<lb />
day.<lb />
There will be a new course offer-<lb />
ed at ECU this fall, due to popular<lb />
demand. This course will be taught<lb />
ai night in order for everyone to<lb />
b j able to attend, and to give the<lb />
freshmen girls somewhere to sign<lb />
out for instead of the fraternity<lb />
houses.<lb />
The course will deal with the fine<lb />
art of suitcase-packing, and will<lb />
have weekly quizzes to keep your<lb />
attention. Although this is listed<lb />
as a freshman course, don't be<lb />
surprised to find many upperclas-<lb />
nlen in there with you.<lb />
Although this above-listed course<lb />
of study may seem strenuous, it is<lb />
really only fourteen quarter hours.<lb />
This should not interfere with your<lb />
life or your education too much<lb />
Some of our professors allow stu-<lb />
dents to cut their classes occasional-<lb />
ly without severe penalty; how-<lb />
ever, the owners of the beer halts<lb />
take roll almost every night. The<lb />
penalty for skipping a night of fun<lb />
and frolics is often quite stringent.<lb />
Some of the owners even take your<lb />
favorite onu off the jukebox if you<lb />
cut two nights in succession.<lb />
Whatever you do with your day-<lb />
light hours, always remember that<lb />
the night-time hours must be spent<lb />
on the local beer parlors in order<lb />
to show your maturity and how well<lb />
you can't hold your beer<lb />
press inemselves through httion<lb />
poetry, satire, and art.<lb />

Greek Life<lb />
Gieek fraternities and sororities<lb />
are intimate association of stu-<lb />
dents living, working, ?nd having<lb />
fun together. College is the best<lb />
place to develop moral, -social, and<lb />
intellectual character; therefore.<lb />
Greek organizations have aided this<lb />
development by offering good liv-<lb />
ing conditions, congenial surround-<lb />
ings, and many facilities for social<lb />
life to their members.<lb />
One must make his own decision<lb />
about joining a fraternity or so-<lb />
rority, basing his decision on his<lb />
knowledge of the Greek organiza-<lb />
tions on campus. To acquaint in-<lb />
terested students with Greek life,<lb />
the twelve social fraternities and<lb />
eight social sororities have devis-<lb />

29th.<lb />
Head basketball coach Tom Quinn<lb />
and assistant coach Kirk Stewart<lb />
have started the first basketball<lb />
school of any type in Eastern North<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
The school is unique in that us<lb />
teaching techniques are individualiz-<lb />
ed instead of the mass instruc-<lb />
tion usually found in basketball<lb />
schools. Each boy will be individ-<lb />
ually screened and give thorough<lb />
tests to determine his strengths and<lb />
weaknesses as related to all phases<lb />
of baskstball.<lb />
Aside from their basketball in-<lb />
struction, the campers will be coun-<lb />
seled by Physical Education ano<lb />
Recreation majors who will live-in<lb />
with the campers in the dorms.<lb />
TVic Tri-State Football Camp,<lb />
headed by Coach Clarence Stasa-<lb />
ich starts its sixth season on July<lb />
28th, and runs through two one-<lb />
week session until Augut 10th.<lb />
Fundamentals are stressed in the<lb />
camp, as the varsity coaching staff<lb />
here at East Carolina are the in-<lb />
structors.<lb />
As in the Buccaneer Basketball<lb />
School, all boys in junior and senior<lb />
high school are eligible if they have<lb />
not started their senior year of high<lb />
scnool.<lb />
Campers will be allowed the use<lb />
of Minges Coliseum, the new Nata-<lb />
torium, the weight-training room,<lb />
and all the outdoor fields for ten-<lb />
nis, football, and baseball.<lb />
The campers will also be allowed<lb />
bo use the student center and the<lb />
student theater.<lb />
