to be submitted to the student body<lb />
In a special referendum this Wed-<lb />

will be allowed to vote for or against<lb />
i special day at the beginning of<lb />
.he drop-add period, In which there<lb />
will be no classes. This, Handlon<lb />
notes, will allow students to spend<lb />
a whole day in procuring the books<lb />
nd materials needed for classes<lb />
and in contacting professors about<lb />
pping or adding courses.<lb />
New Drop-Add Schedule<lb />
The committee has suggested<lb />
that the drop-add period be reduced<lb />
from three to two days, in order<lb />
t i include the free day planned.<lb />
During this free day, no classes<lb />
would be held, and professors<lb />
would be required to be in their<lb />
offices to allow students to confer<lb />
with them. Also during this free<lb />
day students would be able to go<lb />
by their classrooms to determine<lb />
the books and materials needed for<lb />
(heir classes. A list of materials<lb />
required would be posted by the<lb />
professors in the room where the<lb />
class would be taught.<lb />

Earle Beasley, a junior political<lb />
science major, has been selected edi-<lb />
tor of the 1968-69 BUCCANEER by<lb />
the Publications Board.<lb />
Beasley got the Editor's nod at<lb />
ter the Board considered the appli-<lb />
cations of the three candidate- toi<lb />
the office. Also running were<lb />
Claudia Wingate and Janet Flint.<lb />
Boaslev was president of his<lb />

SOU Popular Enteitunment Com-<lb />
mittee a member of the Judicial<lb />
Review Board, a candidate for the<lb />
SGA presidency this spring, and<lb />
business manager of the 1966-6,<lb />
edition of the yearbook.<lb />
Beasley, who will succeed Martha<lb />
Almon who edited the 1967-68 book<lb />
which was released last week, says<lb />
he hopes to continue the standard<lb />
of excellei ce set by this year's edi-<lb />
tion.<lb />
The second day of the drop-add<lb />
period would be a required atti<lb />
ance day. which would enable pro-<lb />
fessors to determine the number of<lb />
students who would actually be m<lb />
the class.<lb />
Greater Efficiency<lb />
Handlon and his committee have<lb />
also suggested in their proposal<lb />
that the number of Werners for the<lb />
drop-add lines be increased to take<lb />
care of the increased number of<lb />
tudents coming through m the re-<lb />

This would enable the administra-<lb />

Drop-Add Referendum<lb />
The SGA RegistrationDrop-Add Study Committee, af-<lb />
ter months of intensive study, has come up with a proposal to<lb />
revise certain aspects of the current Drop-Add procedure, and<lb />
will submit their plan to the student body in a special referen-<lb />
dum Wednesday.<lb />
The key part of the committee's proposal is the planned<lb />
institution of a "free day" prior to the first day of the Drop-<lb />
Add period, during- which no classes would be held and profes-<lb />
sors would be required to be in their offices for conferences<lb />
with students.<lb />
The concept of the "free day" forms the very heart of the<lb />
SGA plan. All the other parts of the proposal are aimed at mak<lb />
ing that day possible and workable. So, in essence, a student's<lb />
vote in the Wednesday referendum will be either for or against<lb />
that day of no classes.<lb />
Tin proposal, if passed, has the potential to alleviat many<lb />
of the problems plaguing those students who must bear the<lb />
present agony of dopping or adding classes. It will give the<lb />
student an opportunity to confer with advisers or professors<lb />
in the privacy of an office, rather than his having to run all<lb />
over campus to catch the professor as he begins or leaves a<lb />
class. It will also give the student a chance to obtain the books<lb />
and materials needed for his classes prior to their first meet-<lb />
ing, since professors will be required to make such a list of<lb />
books and materials and post it in the classroom in which the<lb />
class is to be held.<lb />
This plan will also be of great benefit to the administra-<lb />
tion, since it will give the registrar an accurate indication of<lb />
exactly how many people will be in each class, prior to the<lb />
opening day of Drop-Add. This will enable him to have cards<lb />
on ham.1 at the Drop-Add center for each seat available in each<lb />
class. This will prevent seats being reserved for people who<lb />
havt (l. pped out of school, or who have gone directly to the<lb />
Drop-Add center.<lb />
The Faculty Senate some time ago studied a like plan, and<lb />
then tabled it for further work. The referendum Wednesday is<lb />
necessary to prevent this plan from receiving the same fate.<lb />
Enough affirmative votes would furnish the Senate a man-<lb />
date from the student body, and would virtually assure the<lb />
passagi this reform.<lb />
Tli oting process is quite simple, since ballots are bene<lb />
delivered I and picked up from each dorm room on campus.<lb />
This practically eliminates any reason for a poor turnout by<lb />
dorm st idents. The procedure for day students is little more<lb />
complicated, with polls set up in the University Union lobby.<lb />
The SGA has done its job. Now it is up to the individual<lb />
student who will largely determine the future of Drop-Add<lb />
reform.<lb />
All Is Not Sunshine<lb />
A letter in today's Forum charges the EAST CARO-<lb />
LINIAN with failing to realize "that ail is not sunshine and<lb />
that certain aspects of life at this university require discus-<lb />
sion<lb />
East Carolina University today is in the throes of chai;j.<lb />
from a small teacher-oriented college to a major university.<lb />
As such, there are a great number of things that need to be<lb />
improved. The EAST CAROLINIAN fully realizes that then<lb />
are main tilings wrong here, and that it is the function of<lb />
the newspaper to attempt to bring about changes.<lb />
There are many ways to effect the initiation of such im-<lb />
provements. However, there is only one way for this new-<lb />
paper to be a true voice of the wishes of the student body,<lb />
and that is through responsible, accurate reporting and edi-<lb />
torial policy. Very little has ever been accomplished in this<lb />
world by the use of unfounded criticism and bitter personal<lb />
attack. A desire for betterment, in order to effective, must<lb />
be built upon the implementation of the proper channels for<lb />
change in administration and SGA policy.<lb />
This newspaper can do little until some of the majoi<lb />
wrongs of the present system are presented by the persons in-<lb />
volved. It was for the presentation of such ills that the Forum<lb />
was, and is. intended. When those persons who have legtimate<lb />
grievances against the administration or student body realize<lb />
that pres ntation of their cases to the rest of the sudent body<lb />
is better than consant grumbling to a select group, then the<lb />
EAST CAROLINIAN, the SGA. and the administration will<lb />
be in a position to begin working to remedy some of those<lb />
problem?<lb />

He still has to pay the $5.00. At<lb />

paid $15.00. Multiply this by 2,000<lb />
students living on "the Hill" and<lb />
the total conies to $30,000! Of<lb />
courses, many students use the<lb />
FacUities, but how many do not?<lb />
What I am interested in findinj<lb />

Sunny Editorials<lb />
To the Editorial Editor:<lb />
It seems to me that the EAST<lb />
CAROLINIAN is lacking in certain<lb />
areas of journalism, such as the<lb />
editoral page. My impression is<lb />
to discuss matters which are con-<lb />
troversial or which the editor feels<lb />
need correction of some sort.<lb />
The past editor had nothing bul<lb />
praise or conciliatory words for tin<lb />
administration and the student<lb />
body of ECU. The new editor looks<lb />
as if he will give more of the same<lb />
to his readers.<lb />
I assume the editor oi the paper<lb />
realizes that all is not sunshine<lb />
and that certain aspects of life al<lb />
this university require discussion.<lb />

Dim Future?<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
I read with interest the recenl<lb />
articles by Mr. Whittemore am<lb />
Mr. Mulvihiil concerning certain<lb />
questionable practices on some part<lb />
of some members of the adminis-<lb />
tration. The case cited by these<lb />
two writers an- examples of injus-<lb />
tice so great that they defy de-<lb />
cryption. If these writers are in<lb />
inward those who dare question the<lb />
validity of certain cultural mores?<lb />
A university is, by common defi-<lb />
nition, a place where the validity<lb />
of ideas and concepts is examined<lb />
and tested. Why, then, do some<lb />
seek to squelch the expression of<lb />
alternative idea.s? Is long hair an<lb />
a priori sign of evil? Does a mous-<lb />
tache or a beard render one im-<lb />
mediately and undeniably pervert-<lb />
ed? Are women so innately Inferior<lb />
thai they must be physically iso-<lb />
ated in closed study in order to be<lb />
educated? Do girls learn les in<lb />
slacks? Must students accept the<lb />
value system of others without<lb />
question? Have we arrived at<lb />
perfect an existence that qquestirm<lb />
ing is no longer permissible,<lb />
Such questions run through the<lb />
minds of many members of the Uni<lb />
versity community, and wt often<lb />
wonder what answers are offered<lb />
by those entrustd with positions of<lb />
power, for in their hands lies our<lb />
fate. If such practices as resulted<lb />
in the cases illuminated by Mr<lb />
WhittemoiM and Mr. Mulvihiil are<lb />
continued, the future of East Caro-<lb />

Angel Flight Backs ROTC<lb />
With Dedication And Service<lb />
By NELDA S. LOWE<lb />
Features Editor<lb />
While the memory of the Mili-<lb />
tary Ball lingers, the East Caro-<lb />
lina unit of Angel Flight is spot-<lb />
lighted. Without the Angels, the<lb />
Ball could hardly hove been a suc-<lb />
cess.<lb />
Angel Flight, sponsored by the<lb />
Arnold Air Society to serve as un-<lb />
official hostesses for the Air Force<lb />
ROTC, did much of the planning,<lb />
organizing, and decorating for the<lb />
annual Ball. Thus, the Angels play<lb />
an integral part in an event which<lb />
has become a tradition here<lb />
Besides their assistance with the<lb />
Ball. Angel Flight also seeks to<lb />
morale within the ROTC and<lb />
to further the Air Force and its<lb />
mission and traditions. Its .service<lb />
! unctions have included helping<lb />
with blood drives, collecting for<lb />
UNICEF. joining with Arnold Air<lb />
Society to give Christmas parties<lb />
foi underpriviledged children, col-<lb />
lect ing used clothing tor Vietnam<lb />
refugees, and collecting paperback<lb />
books for American servicemen in<lb />
Vietnam.<lb />
This year, m one day. live Aimel<lb />
Flight and ROTC collected $2,500<lb />
for the March of Dimes Marcha-<lb />
thon. The Angels have also used<lb />
their own personal money to buy<lb />
raids and gifts for patients at the<lb />
I ical convalesent home and have<lb />
spent much time visiting and talk-<lb />
ing with the patients.<lb />
A voluntary drill team has been<lb />
formed by interested Angels, con-<lb />
sisting of sixteen girls who march<lb />
'just for the fun of it This year<lb />
the drill unit marched in the East<lb />
Carolina Homecoming Parade, the<lb />
Greenville Christmas Parade, the<lb />
Washington Christmas Parade, and<lb />
the Azealea Parade in Wilmington.<lb />
Members of Angel Flight also<lb />
have a, chance to travel during the<lb />
year, as ten girls represented the<lb />
local unit at the National Conclave<lb />
in New York.<lb />
The local unit is not without per.<lb />
sonal honors. EC's Angel Flight was<lb />
selected as the most outstanding in<lb />
area B-2, one of 17 areas in the<lb />
United States. The Flight was also<lb />
proud to have Linda West represent<lb />
the area as its Queen in the Na-<lb />
tional Angel Flight comeptition.<lb />
Headed by Commander Dine<lb />
King, the lacal chapter consists of<lb />
thirty-five members. There is no<lb />
military obligation and membership<lb />
is open to interested students who<lb />
have a "C" average.<lb />
The Flight is a ctoseknit organiza-<lb />
tion of girls working together, ac-<lb />
cording to Executive Officer Linda<lb />
Mahan, who commented. "Angel<lb />
Flight is not just an organization,<lb />
it is a sisterhood. We work with the<lb />
boys in ROTC, but we also work<lb />
with and for each o her and Angel<lb />
Flight<lb />
The Angels' advisor. Maj. Kevin<lb />
T. Ryan. Jr. stated, "What a privi-<lb />
ledge it is to serve in a helping<lb />
capacity for the angels! These<lb />

At the hearing the Public De-<lb />

Finally, the Public Defender must<lb />
explain the verdict and penalty to<lb />

When asked how he feels about<lb />

in his chair, thoughtfully stroked<lb />
his chin, and replied. "I feel that<lb />
the Public Defender is beneficial<lb />
to the accused student, not in re-<lb />

that students are "more capable of<lb />

the accused, and could thus judge<lb />

faculty members<lb />
After a brief pause, the Defend-<lb />
er added, "However, the effective-<lb />

to what they feel is just is given,<lb />
but they will not take the time<lb />

"Student apathy is not only harm-<lb />

nearly all areas involving the in-<lb />
