Jenkins Answers Questions<lb />
Concerning Tuition Raise<lb />
By LYNN SHEAKIN<lb />
Dr Leo Jenkins met with the<lb />
men on the hill in the basement of<lb />
Aycock Dormitory for a question-<lb />
and-answer session Monday even-<lb />
ing.<lb />
After a brief introduction by<lb />
MRC President Ben Franklin. Dr.<lb />
Jenkins began the session with a<lb />
few comparative statistics of East<lb />
Carolina twenty years ago and to-<lb />
day. He then invited the men ro<lb />
,k questions on any topic.<lb />
Questions centered around Dr.<lb />
Jenkins' policies concerning uni-<lb />
versity status, details oi the AAU<lb />
Swim Meet, and future plans of<lb />
the university.<lb />
Jenkins stated that in the future.<lb />
there will be a new program called<lb />
pilot study, in which 12 students<lb />
ill be selected to spend their four<lb />
summers working all over the coun-<lb />
try with important leaders in all<lb />
areas, to see and learn how they<lb />
operate<lb />
He commented on the plans for<lb />
the University's twenty-million-<lb />
dollar expansion program. There is<lb />
vet another ten-story women's<lb />
dormitory to be built next<lb />
to the one going up now. This is<lb />
the last year for Wilson Dormitory:<lb />
: will soon be torn down, and a<lb />
new dormitory built in its place<lb />
After this. Old Austin will go, with<lb />
another dormitory replacing it. Two<lb />
seven - story men's dorms are<lb />
scheduled, olus a new Student Un-<lb />
ion (hopefully, the multi-million<lb />
dollar type). A new classroom build-<lb />
ing, twice the size of New Austin.<lb />
will be erected between the old cym<lb />
and music building.<lb />
-This is only the beginning<lb />
: dded Dr. Jenkins.<lb />
"During Christmas vacation, we<lb />
are planning a three-day basket-<lb />
ball tournament, with the best<lb />
teams available and possible, at<lb />
our new coliseum he added.<lb />
"There will be a contest announced<lb />
later to name the tournament, with<lb />
$100 given to the winner<lb />
"During Easter vacation, we will<lb />
host, the AAU Swim Meet which will<lb />
be televised In color. Sleeping fac-<lb />
ilities for the guests are under the<lb />
new gym he continued.<lb />
The question of a coin-operated<lb />
laundry for the men was raised.<lb />
Dr. Jenkins promised that this mat-<lb />
ter will be investigated.<lb />
The rumor of increased tuition<lb />
was confirmed by Dr. Jenkins, who<lb />
said that it is inevitable. The in-<lb />
state students cost goes from $150<lb />
to $168, with the out-of-state costs<lb />
rising from $400-$600. Jenkins add-<lb />
ed that there are numerous schol-<lb />
arships, work grants, and other fl-<lb />
CORRECTTON<lb />
The EAST CAROLINIAN er-<lb />
roneously reported that the La-<lb />
Salle Quartet would appear last<lb />
Tuesday night. Due to a change<lb />
in the scheduling of the Artists<lb />
Series, the group will not ap-<lb />
pear this year.<lb />
. : : those WtK<lb />
-red them. Another point of inter-<lb />
est : only one out of four applicants<lb />
was accepted by East Carolina this<lb />
year,<lb />
Concerning the cultural growth<lb />
of this area. Jenkins said that the<lb />
N. C. State Ballet will make its<lb />
residence here. Sports improve-<lb />
ments will includ" lighting and<lb />
roofing and over 4.000 seats opposite<lb />
Flcklen Stadium for night baseball<lb />
II will be for the use of both stu-<lb />
dents and the sreneral oublic.<lb />
Jenkins clears up questions for men<lb />
on the Hill.<lb />
SGA Establishes<lb />
Bi-weekly Meets<lb />
Speaker Steve Morrisette announc-<lb />
ed that the SGA Legislature has<lb />
been forced into having bi-weekly<lb />
meetings rather than the tradltion-<lb />
1 weekly session. The reason giv-<lb />
en for the change is lack of busi-<lb />
ness. Morrisette expressed his hope<lb />
that there would be more activity<lb />
next quarter.<lb />
Dr. James Tucker announced the<lb />
newly revised dress code, exclaim-<lb />
ing that this would mark the begin-<lb />
ning of "government by principal<lb />
instead of so many rules<lb />
Reporting that the Intramural<lb />
constitution had been considered by<lb />
the Rules Committee, Bill Richard-<lb />
son revealed that it had also been<lb />
returned to them for revision.<lb />
The body voted to officially thank<lb />
David Lloyd and Jean Harvey for<lb />
the "successful" Homecoming func-<lb />
tions.<lb />
The next legislature meeting will<lb />
be held Monday. November I, at<lb />

Channel Those Complaints<lb />
The recent revision of the Women's Dress Code serves as<lb />
an example of wha4 can be accomplished throujrh earnest and<lb />
responsible requests on the part of many interested students.<lb />
The results of the revisions, of course, will not be seen im-<lb />
mediately. But by the mere consideration for students' griev-<lb />
ances, the SGA and Administration have shown their willing-<lb />
ness to listen v h.enever students take the time to step griping<lb />
about and start presenting solutions to their problems.<lb />
student complaints are heard everyday ranging from park-<lb />
ing problems to grts for breakfast, but few bother to seek any<lb />
kind of alternal ive.<lb />
We hope that the action taken on the Dress Code revisions<lb />
will set a precedent whereby students can draw up plans of<lb />
fiction for betterment of campus and academic life and si<lb />
down to discuss them with administration officials.<lb />
There can I no basis for complaints when a plan exists<lb />
for fret- discussion and solution oi problems. Not being ri sy-<lb />
eyed optimist; , we admit that mere have been, in the past, in-<lb />
stances where students' voices have gone unheard. But thes<lb />
examples were few and far between.<lb />
Looking from a realistic point, the students' representa-<lb />
tives in the S(7A and the Administration cannot afford to ov-<lb />
erlook the problems and difficulties facing the undergraduate.<lb />
It is the students' money which supports their (the students')<lb />
education, so what reason would the Administration have for<lb />
misusing it?<lb />
So far this year, the records show success in the amount<lb />
of attention given student requests. Let's keep the ball rolling<lb />
by inquiring rather than merely complaining.<lb />
Stagnant Waters Of SGA<lb />
We must a plaud the talk given by Speaker of the Legit<lb />
lature Steve Morrissette on October 23 and his decision of bi-<lb />
weekly legislative meeting which seem apparern after last<lb />
Monday's meeting.<lb />
As a word cf explanation: Speaker RIorrisette in his ad-<lb />
dress to the Legislature on Monday, October 23, asked tin<lb />
representatives to come up with better motions and bills and<lb />
in general to concentrate on serving the students' interest.<lb />
Morrisette hinted at that time that if not enough business was<lb />
brought before the body, the legislature would have to resort<lb />
meeting every other week. Apparently this is the case as the<lb />
SGA student legislature has Se1 its next s ssion for November<lb />
- c;<lb />

The question of where to place the blame is complicated<lb />
and should not :jc answered without careful consideration.<lb />
There exists a prorlem of unfamiliarity with the freshman leg-<lb />
islators (meaning newly elected, not class). Many have never<lb />
been in a representative body before and are unfamiliar with<lb />
parliamentary procedure.<lb />
Also, there seems to exist an uncertainty as to the exact<lb />
duties and power- of the legislator. This is understandable<lb />
with the WRC, student affairs office and other organizations<lb />
claiming and filling duties heretofore thought to be reserved<lb />
for the legislature itself. Sirs:<lb />
It is quite evident by the admission of some of the legisla-<lb />
tors that a few of the students' representatives are even disin-<lb />
terested in what is happening during the meetings.<lb />
One can well understand the position that the Speaker is<lb />
put in; being responsible for keeping the meeting in order-<lb />
trying to get interesting bills and discussion onto the floor<lb />
and unable, in his position, to present legislation or stir speech-<lb />
es from the floor.<lb />
Without placing blame tor the laxness of recent legisla-<lb />
the solution can better be reached<lb />

We stated at the beginning of this year that the 1967-68<lb />

An organization as young as the<lb />

How conservative or how liberal<lb />
the W.R.C. recommendations are<lb />
will depend upon -you, the women<lb />

and feelings that you express.<lb />
Every woman dormitory student<lb />
Is a member of W.R.C, but just as<lb />
the SGA. cannot function effect-<lb />

at each meeting, neither can the<lb />
W.R.C. function effectively with Its<lb />
total membership present at each<lb />

leaders of lie demonstration start-<lb />

the day wore on. mass paranoia<lb />
came into play. One speaker said<lb />
that the entire society would have<lb />
to be dismantled so that it could be<lb />

Another called lor a moment of si-<lb />

ceived it. One orator went so far<lb />
as to urge mutiny in the army, on<lb />
the assumption that the breakdown<lb />
would lead us to peace, rather than<lb />
a police state. These instant and<lb />
foolish panaceas to all the world's<lb />

What is needed is intelligent dis-<lb />

America s tough enough to with-<lb />

Sing Songs Of Action<lb />
For A Tired World<lb />
By bob McDowell<lb />
When the New<lb />
Horizon makes its<lb />
debut this Friday<lb />
night at the Cata-<lb />
combs, East Carolina<lb />
University is in for a big<lb />
surprise. Those of you who<lb />
heard them as the New Horizon<lb />
Singers will not believe your eyes<lb />
jr ears. The well-scrubbed folksy look<lb />
gone. The New Horizon has gone elec-<lb />
With George Weigand at the controls, elec-<lb />
tric wizardry causes folk to take on a new dimenson.<lb />
"obby Pan! supplies the basic beat with his electric<lb />
ass, a.s Ke'th Lane sits by unconcerned, waiting to add<lb />
finishing touches to the songs he wrote.<lb />
Originality is the aim of the New Horizon. Brenda Linton. Betty Hall,<lb />
and Steve Millard started two years ago as a folk trio shaped in the<lb />
image of Pete Paul, and Mary. But times have changed and so have<lb />
they. The New Horizon has left the tired folk standards behind. They<lb />
don't sing "If I Had a Hammer" because the kind of protest that<lb />
the "Hammer Song" exemplifies died with the passive protest of the<lb />
early sixties.<lb />
Now the New Horizon sings PCtive songs, songs of involvement in our<lb />
tired world. Keith Lane's anti-war song, "In the Eastern Air stares<lb />
back at you from the pages of "Life" magazine, and you are pers-<lb />
onally involved with the "ragged shadow 5" that wait to form another<lb />
wave on the beaches of Guadacanal, Iwo Jima, or Vietnam.<lb />
T banjo, a bass, an electiic guitar, and even a sitar wait in silent<lb />
taiticipation to add the finishing touch to a now dimenson in music.<lb />
Be there Friday night to be part of folk music's newest soundthe<lb />

By John Lowe<lb />
The Pirates must now regroup af-<lb />

face a Purman team that is getting<lb />
better each week. Last week the<lb />
Purple Paladins belted Lehigh 38-<lb />
15 for their fourth win against<lb />
three losses. The Paladins will be<lb />
up for this game and will be eager<lb />
to rub the Pirates' faces into the<lb />
dirt for the second week. Also, the<lb />
Paladins remember their 17-0 loss<lb />
t the Pirates last year when they<lb />
managed but five yards rushing and<lb />
80 yards passing.<lb />
How Will The Team React?<lb />
It's hard to say how the Pirates<lb />
will react after the upset. They<lb />
could still be down and gel whipped<lb />

they could go out and tear the liv-<lb />
