SGA REPORT<lb />
The<lb />
second meeting of the 19651<lb />
Summer School legislature was called<lb />
to order Monday. June 28 at 4:00 i<lb />
: p.m. by Steve Smiteman.<lb />
The body moved directly into new ,<lb />
business, under which J.m Kimsey,<lb />
SGA treasurer, presented a motion<lb />
concerning three additional appro-<lb />
priations for the summer session.<lb />
The first appropriation was tor the<lb />
purchase of an Ampli-Voice portable<lb />
sound system, to be used for campus<lb />
meetings, at a cost of $398.61. This<lb />
motion passed unanimously with<lb />
Dean Alexander conferring the ex-<lb />
tensive need for the portable system.<lb />
The second request was for a new<lb />
electric adding machine for the Ex-<lb />
ecutive Council at a cost of $296.64.<lb />
The 'appropriation was voted down<lb />
after much discussion due to the fact<lb />
that the legislature could not justify<lb />
the cost of such a machine at this<lb />
time.<lb />
The third request was in connect-<lb />
ion with the Summer Theater. It<lb />
was suggested that the SGA buy 175<lb />
ticket- per performance I<lb />
$1.50 per ticket. This w<lb />
in the purchase ol 2050 and<lb />
a total price ol $1375. This appro-<lb />
ition passed unanimous!<lb />
was pointed out that the vets<lb />

A motion was then mai<lb />

cerning cafeteria service and<lb />
labeling of foods. The motion pas<lb />
and such a committee was set up.<lb />
Martin Lassifer then moved that<lb />
further research be done on e pur-<lb />
chase of the adding machine by a<lb />
committee. The motion carried and<lb />
the committee was established under<lb />
the direction of Jim Kimsey.<lb />
The meeting was adjourned with<lb />

Policies or Promises?<lb />
Associate Editor's Note: The East Carolinian attempts<lb />
to convey the thinking of the students in both campus and<lb />
national news. Due to the recent television debate with Mc-<lb />
forge Bimdy, special assistant to President Johnson, and<lb />
five college professors concerning the Viet Nam Crisis, we<lb />
offer the following guest editorial.<lb />
For the first time in our generation, there has arisen a<lb />
very real split among the American people concerning foreign<lb />
policy of un- country. The students on this campus generally<lb />
follow the administration when it speaks of continuing the<lb />
war in Viet Nam. A majority agree that we should stay in,<lb />
and a minority say we should pull out. We feel that it is<lb />
necessary to state that we are in this minority group.<lb />
American policy has now readied a low ebb. This week,<lb />
along with killing children, American bombers with the Vi t-<lb />
namese ombed a Viet Cong hospital. In addition to this,<lb />
are numerous cases on record of civilians being burned<lb />
by nepalm bombs dropped from South Vietnamese and Ameri-<lb />
n planes.<lb />
W -onto the fact that the supporters of the adminis-<lb />
tration throw at us that if we leave Viet Nam. we break a<lb />
pi . What of the two promises we have already broken ?<lb />
As members of the United Nations we have supposedly<lb />
renounced overt aggression against sovereign countries. The<lb />
bombings of North Viet Nam show that in reality we have<lb />
r, ' so.<lb />
The Geneva conference in 1954 called for removal of<lb />
foreign troops from Viet Nam. Our continued presence there<lb />
indicates that we take our treaties seriously only when it is<lb />
politically expedient for us to do so.<lb />
The government of South Viet Nam is one of our own<lb />
creation Most of the peasants in South Viet Nam do not sup-<lb />
port this government any more than they support the con-<lb />
tinued presence of U. S. forces in their country. It is very<lb />
unlikely that we could hope xo win a guerrilla war without<lb />
the support of the people.<lb />
Our nation must leave Viet Nam. By pulling out, the<lb />
United States will admit that she was wrong. But it takes<lb />
more courage for anyone to admit he is wrong than to con-<lb />
tinue the fight. W.F.H.<lb />
Klan or Clown?<lb />
Recently two small crosses were burned on our campus.<lb />
The campus police speculated that the burnings were the<lb />
work of pranksters. This may be true: however, it is possible<lb />
that the KKK or some of the Klan sympathizers in our stu-<lb />
dent body performed this despicable act in a crude attempt<lb />
to intin te some of the Negro students here.<lb />
Although much room for improvement does exist, race<lb />
relations in the past at East Carolina have been good. Inci-<lb />
dents sucl s the cross burnings, regardless of whether or<lb />
not they are pranks, can only damage the progress the college<lb />
has made in this field. The campus police would do well to<lb />
investigate this matter thoroughly and to take appropriate<lb />
action against those hoodlums responsible for raising the<lb />
ugly heads of bigotry and fascism. W.A.C.<lb />

Bast Carolina College and a regular<lb />
reviewer of musical drama for the<lb />
college news bureau.I<lb />
Oh, what a beautiful evening! "Ok-<lb />
lahoma never had it so good.<lb />
Mavis Ray has brought Rodgers<lb />
and Hammerstein's classic to the<lb />
East Carolina College Summer<lb />
Theater stage in the full bloom of<lb />
its freshness and charm.<lb />
The audience -senses something<lb />
special is afoot when it seams the<lb />
new souvenir program, lavish with<lb />
color. This impression is enhanced<lb />
when the orchestra, enlarged over<lb />
last year's, swings into the over-<lb />
ture with precision imd zest.<lb />
Then the new red curtain goes up<lb />
on John Sneden's sunlit set, and the<lb />
-how is on. From then on the pace<lb />
and verve never slacken: a buoyed-<lb />
up audience almost reluctantly takes<lb />
an intermission, returns happily for<lb />
a second act that goes by all too<lb />
soon.<lb />
Much of the delight emanates from<lb />
Dixie Ray. an enchanting Laurey,<lb />
lovely to 'look at, beautiful to hear.<lb />
David Smith as Curly is an authen-<lb />
tic cowboy, straight from Marlboro<lb />
country, gifted with a generous, clear<lb />
voice and an acting ability so good<lb />
as not to seem like acting. Marc Bel-<lb />
fort, helped by a magnificent voice.<lb />
brin.es out both the unconscious<lb />
humor and the geusne menace of Jud.<lb />
Anne West, who repeatedly distin-<lb />
guished herself last season, is an<lb />
earthy and winning, if scarcely<lb />
scrawny. Aunt Eller. Graham Pol-<lb />
lock, overcoming the fact that he is<lb />
less than ideally cast as AH Hakim,<lb />
exploits every humorous possibility<lb />
in the role. Minnie (raster, except<lb />
for the upper register of her singing<lb />
voice, is an unexceptionably sexy<lb />
Ado Annie.<lb />
Robert Neu overcomes the handi-<lb />
cap of a rather slight singing voice<lb />
to do a good job, particularly per-<lb />
suasive as to age, as Ado Annie's<lb />
,vhotgun-tobing tether. And the ex<lb />
otieaily beautiful Lynda Mover Ls<lb />
inevitably splendid as Gertie Cum-<lb />
mings.<lb />
In the ballet, whiuh gets the big-<lb />
gest hand of the evening. Eileen<lb />
Law lor dances Laurey exquisitely,<lb />
and llussell Davis is an exciting<lb />
Curly.<lb />
John Sneden's sets are up to his<lb />
usual high standard, especially not-<lb />
able1 being the curiously luminous<lb />
grove. The lighting, although it<lb />
doesn't quite capture the effect of<lb />
full sunlight in the first and last<lb />
scenes, is otherwise flawless aid<lb />
wonderfully imaginative in the ballet<lb />
scene, when it is virtually the whole<lb />
setting.<lb />
Costumes are colorful, dances are<lb />
bursting with lusty, youthful high<lb />
. nN the diction throughout is a<lb />

Europe Ofters Change<lb />
Oi Views To Visitors<lb />
By PETE HONDROS<lb />
'Everybody is going to Europe<lb />
wrote Mark Twain in 1867. And to-<lb />
day, nearly everybody is still going<lb />
to Europe. School teachers, who have<lb />
Slaved for months to see New York<lb />
and parts of Florida, are now buying<lb />
tourist-class tickets to Europe. Bank-<lb />
ers and more magnates are booking<lb />
first-class passage to Paris and tthe<lb />
Riviera. Businessmen and diplomats<lb />
are jamming the airplanes. Publish-<lb />
ers and writers are going to Eng-<lb />
land, designers and artists to France,<lb />
mountain climbers to Switzerland.<lb />
archaeologists to Greece, and college<lb />
students everywhere are visiting all<lb />
parts of the western continent. These<lb />
and many other types of people are<lb />
going to Europe for a thousand dif-<lb />
ferent reasons.<lb />
Nearly all of our culture, includ-<lb />
ing the culture of democracy, was<lb />
horn and developed in Europe and<lb />
came to us trom there. Our law-<lb />
came from Greece, Rome, and the<lb />
English country house. Our lang-<lb />
uage came from Germany, France,<lb />
and England, with a little influence<lb />
from Scandinavia, Itaiiy. and Spain.<lb />
Our art. from Leonardo da Vinci to<lb />
Aieoffo, has deep roots in Europe.<lb />
Our literature goes back to beloved<lb />
English writers. Our theater, a direct<lb />
descendant from Shakespeare and<lb />
Pen Jonson. is again a European<lb />
heritage. And even the delights of<lb />
our table, our food amd our wane,<lb />
have been influenced and still are<lb />
being influenced by the gastronomic<lb />
culture of Europe.<lb />
A trip abroad is good for the soul<lb />
because it quickly shakes off our<lb />
limited views. The American tourist<lb />
finds out that Bern, in Switzerland,<lb />
and Oordiff. in Wales, are better<lb />
planned than any American citv of<lb />
their size. He discovers that" the<lb />
English and West Germans buy more<lb />
books per capita than we do. He finds<lb />
out that an English schoolboy is<lb />
usually a year ahead of the Ameri-<lb />
can schoolboy of the same age. and<lb />
that an Oxford man is generally<lb />
better educated in three years than<lb />
an American university man in four.<lb />
The American tourist also dis-<lb />
covers that by European standards.<lb />
New York and Chicago are intoler-<lb />
ably dirty, and quickly perceives in<lb />
great parts of Europe a natural ar-<lb />
tistic sense quite lacking in most of<lb />
his own country.<lb />
I have seen numerous post cards<lb />
sent by students who are presently<lb />
taking the tour to Europe, which is<lb />
being sponsored by the art depart-<lb />
ment here at East Carolina. The<lb />
tour, thus far, has turned out to be<lb />
-quite successful and everyone on<lb />
the tour is enjoying themselves to<lb />
the fullest extent. If you are over<lb />
given an opportunity to see and dis<lb />
cover Europe for yourself, I'm sure<lb />
that only a fool would turn it down.<lb />

Racers Need More To<lb />
Win '500' Than Speed<lb />
least two pit stops during the race,<lb />
and the pressure refuel systems were<lb />
'smoothness'<lb />
the pits.<lb />
rarely give the<lb />
speed. In fact,<lb />
When the winner flashes across the<lb />
finish line at the Indianapolis 300-<lb />
Mile race teas Memorial Day. mill-<lb />
ions oi rave fans will acclaim him<lb />
a hero . and in a very real sense<lb />
he wall be.<lb />

other sporting event in the world<lb />
him carry home the biggest<lb />
ig, around $140,000<lb />
for his days work. And he will nave<lb />
. ei ging a speed that<lb />
uld nudge 160 mph.<lb />
How is it done? There are tieens<lb />
of (lements that enter into winning,<lb />
all of which must mesh with clock-<lb />
work precision. Driver, pit crew and<lb />
: must function at peak efficiency,<lb />
with men applying skills honed to<lb />
perfection from long experience.<lb />
If one word had to describe the<lb />
:ion. it would be<lb />
on the track and in<lb />
The besi drivers<lb />
illusion of daredevi<lb />
along the straightaways, where<lb />
speeds hover near 20Cmph. they re-<lb />
lax, flexing cramped muscles, check-<lb />
ing their cars All agree that as<lb />
long as the race is going smoothly<lb />
there is no sensation of the blinding<lb />
speed seen bv the spectators.<lb />
It is essential that the winning<lb />
driver apply total concentration to<lb />
the job at hand. He must keep his<lb />
engine turning within a few hundred<lb />
revs per minute of its maximum: not<lb />
too fast or he'll destroy it and not<lb />
too slow . . . he'll lose power. He<lb />
must watch traffic and check pit<lb />
signals. In the turns he'll seek the<lb />
same line each time, the fastest way<lb />
through, without wild slides or spec-<lb />
tacular grandstand tactics that ac-<lb />
tually cause a car to go more slowly<lb />
all the while covering 21- miles<lb />
every 60 seconds.<lb />
The Indy 500 has been won . . .<lb />
and lost in the pits. Crews must<lb />
couple speed with the coordination of<lb />
a ballet corps in action, adding fuel,<lb />
inspecting tires and changing those<lb />
worn, giving the driver a drink, it<lb />
cleaning goggles and windshield in a<lb />
matter of 20 seconds or less<lb />
With ears evenly matched, seconds<lb />
lost in a sloppy pit stop are ex-<lb />
tremely difficult for the driver to<lb />
rrtafce up. In 1964. for example, tw-<lb />
time Indy winner Rodger Ward was<lb />
forced by a malfunctioning fuel sys-<lb />
tem to stop five times for fuel. His<lb />
pit crew was so efficient that he<lb />
still managed a second place, but<lb />
if the three extra pit stops had been<lb />
eliminated, the time gained would<lb />
have given given him an excellent<lb />
chance of winning.<lb />
Only li seconds separated first<lb />
and second place ears in 1962. while<lb />
a scant 8 seconds meant victory in<lb />
1961.<lb />

who supply esential technical know-<lb />
how bout tires, brakes, fuels, en-<lb />
gines, shock absorbers, wheels. :ul<lb />
the h sl of othi r parts that go into<lb />

These are the unsung heroes, for<lb />
thoul their expert a;lviee and race-<lb />
proven products no ear builder could<lb />
hope to complete an Indianapolis rac-<lb />
ing machine.<lb />
Hiring fuels are a good example.<lb />
For many years Mobil Oil Com-<lb />
pany has maintained a permanent<lb />
installation at the Speedway where a<lb />
crew of experts blend special fuels<lb />
to the mechanics specifications.<lb />
For months prior to the rice.<lb />
Mobil engineers conduct laboratory<lb />
and track tests with actual racing<lb />
engines to determine the ingredients<lb />
leading to maximum power and mile<lb />
age. making 'the information and<lb />
fuels available as a service to en-<lb />
trants.<lb />
Tire companies do much the same<lb />
thing. Both Firestone and Goodyear<lb />
put thousands of test miles on new<lb />
i;re designs, developing rubber that<lb />
gives top wear and traction.<lb />
Today there are racing tires that<lb />
will go the full 500 miles without re-<lb />
placement, a feat that was (impossible<lb />
a few years ago.<lb />
Tlv frad'f'on of the Speedwov<lb />
itself has played a major role in<lb />
winning. However, the history of the<lb />
track was altered this year. Not<lb />
since before World WTar T had a<lb />
foreign entrant won the "500 but<lb />
Scotland's Jimmy Clark, broke the<lb />
r. S. streak.<lb />
It isn't that the overseas drivers<lb />
haven't tried: in 1964 Clark led the<lb />
event for 60 laps until ho was forced<lb />
out with tire failure. However, he<lb />
'Jo most spectators, speed is all that meets the eye as the competing cars travel around the tra l<lb />
in excess of 150 mph. There are many more factors to be considered. tsfcfc<lb />
was driving a ear powered by a<lb />
Ford engine.<lb />
Aside from Clark, the challenge of<lb />
the Speedway, a 2Vz mile oval with<lb />
four gently banked turns, seems to<lb />
have been too much for the drivers<lb />
accustomed to the twisting road<lb />
courses of Europe.<lb />
There is one final factor that every<lb />
driver needs to win: some drivers<lb />
claim that ;t's the most important<lb />
element of all. What is it? Riacing<lb />
luck, and it has ridden with every<lb />
winner since Rav Hurroun won the<lb />
first "500" in 1911.<lb />

because<lb />
For women, Gant makes shirts, not blouses. Now, the<lb />
difference between a shirt and a blouse is not styling, but<lb />
the craftsmanship sewn into it which directly reflects in<lb />
the fit, flair and look. Women's tailoring is wonderful,<lb />
but it doesn't have the substance, the character, the'<lb />
precision to make a man-styled shirt look authentic.<lb />
And this we think is precisely what women are seeking<lb />
in button downs, convertibles and Bermudas<lb />
Gant, you know, are shirtmakers, not blousemakers.<lb />
They use the same deft "needle" in their women's shirts as<lb />
they do in their men's with a difference. Their women's<lb />
shirts are cut to women's proportions; collars are smaller,<lb />
so are cuffs. The fit is woman, the niceties are woman '<lb />
but the look and tailoring are authentically man.<lb />
In substance, Gant shirts are for women of<lb />
discerning taste<lb />
women who have an innate sense of quality.<lb />
These women are our customers.<lb />
