"WHAT DO THEY WANT?"<lb />
They overflowed from the church like a swollen<lb />
stream of dark v ater and split, one stream to the left<lb />
and one to the rurht, not rushing and boiling like a tide<lb />
at flood crest but rather surging- quietly and powerfully<lb />
like a tidl wave in midsea, and occasionally spilling over<lb />
the curbF into the streets bordering the churchyard block.<lb />
A third stream split from the others and headed towards<lb />
the downtown districts and the courthouse square. And<lb />
then it happened. Firemen rushed forward and bran-<lb />
dished high pressure hoses and a lone policeman stepped<lb />
into the middle of the street holding a megaphone to his<lb />
mouth and ordered the wave to disperse, but the wave<lb />
came doggedly on until the firemen no longer brandished<lb />
the hoses but leveled their own streams into the darker<lb />
stream. The dark stream burst into small segments of<lb />
Negro teenagers. The segments held and then burst, them-<lb />
selves, into individuals. They cowered in the street, hands<lb />
over their heads, and then were forced to their knees<lb />
by the water from the hoses or were pushed along the<lb />
streets in front of the policemen.<lb />
Connor ordered the dogs brought in.<lb />
All you ot to do is tell them you're going to bring<lb />
the dogs he said. "Look at 'em run. Bring the dogs<lb />
anyway, captain And then he turned to the officers<lb />
holding back the crowds of white onlookers.<lb />
"Let those people come to the corner, sergeant. I<lb />
want them to see the dogs work And the crowd came to<lb />
the comer in time to see the segments that had been the<lb />
dark wave break completely and flee down the street<lb />
awav from the center of town, with the dogs snarling<lb />
and snapping at their heels and the police officers running<lb />
after them brandishing night sticks. The crowd cheered.<lb />
"Look at those niggers run Conner shouted. The<lb />
crowd cheeked.<lb /><lb />
But Conner is not a character from the pages of<lb />
William Faulkner, and the events, despite their bizarre<lb />
qualities, did not happen at some, imaginary lynching in<lb />
the dark recesses of an imaginary Yoknapatawpha Coun-<lb />
ty. Eugene Conner is the Police Commissioner in Birm-<lb />
ingham, Alabama and the events described took place<lb />
there last Friday.<lb />
"But what do they want?" a lady asked us Sunday.<lb />
"What do those Negroes want, rioting and raging in the<lb />
streets like that? Haven't they got everything?"<lb />
"Well, maybe they haive, at that we answered.<lb />
And with the forces of order and justice as represented<lb />
by Eugene Conner operating, they will surely keep it.<lb />
COLLEGE ATHLETICS<lb />
Friday, May 3, the Atlantic Coast Conference del-<lb />
egates at the conference meeting in College Park, Mary-<lb />
land, voted not to raise the minimum academic require-<lb />
ments for football and basketball players. Actually no<lb />
one should object to athletes being accepted at institu-<lb />
tions of higher learning on requirements beneath those<lb />
of other students. Nor should they object to athletes being<lb />
kept in school, both academically and otherwise, simply<lb />
because they are athletes. Recognize the professional<lb />
nature of college football and basketball, and also that<lb />
these professionals cannot be expected to maintain the<lb />
same study habits as the common students. After all,<lb />
their primary purpose at their institution is to play<lb />
their respective sport to the best of their ability and<lb />
this requires that their energies not be diverted too much<lb />
by studies.<lb />
Also, we must all recognize the tremendous benefits<lb />
garnered to the institutions from the subsidy of "big<lb />
time" athletics. There are some institutions which, if not<lb />
subsidized by football could not operate in the black.<lb />
There are even more institutions in which football sup-<lb />
ports the entire athletic program, both intramural and<lb />
professional. Additionally, few aspects of any school<lb />
can be expected to increase school spirit like a good<lb />
football or basketball team. High school scholars are<lb />
rare who do not first examine the athletic teams before<lb />
they choose a college or university at which to study.<lb />
For these reasons, we heartily approve of the ACC's<lb />
refusal to raise their minimum requirements for athletes<lb />
(which are very realistically, about half what they are<lb />
for common students). But we thought that perhaps,<lb />
since such policies are in effect, the institutions involved<lb />
might initiate a totally new concept in the area of educa-<lb />
tion. They could place a special little stamp on the di-<lb />
ploma of athleteswho graduate. This stamp would sig-<lb />
nify for everybody that this graduate had been an ath-<lb />
lete in college. You know, sort of like the way manufact-<lb />
urers stamp "Second" on some shirts.<lb />

Dearest Darling Editor.<lb />
In answer to your idiotic Edi-<lb />
torial in Friday's EAST CARO-<lb />
LINIAN, I should like to say a<lb />
few choice words.<lb />
I can actual ly see the reasons<lb />
(sic) why FRESHMAN (sic) should<lb />
not have cars, you cannot say I<lb />
am predjudiee (sic) because I am a<lb />
Freshman myself. But when peo-<lb />
ple stall drawing the line on Sopho-<lb />
mores something has to be said.<lb />
You were right in saying not<lb />
having cars would be unpopular<lb />
with the underclassmen. It was<lb />
probably the understatement erf<lb />
the year, furthermore you did not<lb />
have a pertinent fact to present,<lb />
to make such a statement.<lb />
First of all you stated that in-<lb />
stitutions with high academic rat-<lb />
ings did not permit their under-<lb />
classmen to operate automobiles.<lb />
Since when is East Carolina Col-<lb />
lege an institution with the highest<lb />
academic standings (sic)? There<lb />
goes your first pertinent fact shot<lb />
to pieces. In the same paragraph<lb />
you foonto say that people who<lb />
have cars will not study. Who are<lb />
you to make such a rationilization<lb />
(sic)? Besides M the student rath-<lb />
er drive a car, who is to say he<lb />
is to study? It is his own business<lb />
if he rather drive and flunkout<lb />
(sic). To go beyond that a person<lb />
who attends college is supposed<lb />
to be mature enough to realize<lb />
that be is here for an education,<lb />
and not a joy ride. If tbe student<lb />
does not realize this from the be-<lb />
ginning, he should not be here in<lb />
the first place.<lb />
You then go on to point out that<lb />
East Carolina does not have the<lb />
space (sk) to provide for all the<lb />
cars on campus. If East Carolina<lb />
does not have the space to accomo-<lb />
date (sic) students and their cars<lb />
they should not admit so many new<lb />
Freshman (sic) each year until<lb />
the space problem is solved. Maybe<lb />

SPORTS REVIEW<lb />
By RON DOWDY<lb />
The EC thin-clad meet, scheduled for last Saturday<lb />
against High Point, was canceled, causing the campus ath-<lb />
letics to be quite slack over the weekend. The track team<lb />
closed out their season yesterday in a match with AC.<lb /><lb />
The golf team hosted AC yesterday and are to be<lb />
hosted by Old Dominion on Thursday.<lb /><lb />
The tennis team hosted the Citadel Saturday and the<lb />
College of Charleston yesterday. On Friday they encounter<lb />
Pfeiffer, and on Saturday, Davidson. Both of these games<lb />
are away.<lb /><lb />
Lacy West increased his number of winning games<lb />
Friday as he hurled the Pirate diamond men over Elon, 13-1.<lb />
West "allowed just five hits in the nine innings, striking<lb />
out nine and walking none. West has won six and lost two.<lb />
The mainstay of Coach Smith's staff had a four-hit shutout<lb />
going for 8 23 innings until an unearned run was pushed<lb />
across in the last of the ninth.<lb /><lb />
Tommy Kidd has really been setting a hot pace during<lb />
the second half of this season. His batting hasn't increased<lb />
too rapidly, but his runs-batted-in have doubled. A tre-<lb />
mendous asset to the team, Kidd has now hit a home run in<lb />
four of the last six games. He has a total of 23 r.b.is.<lb /><lb />
Odds and Ends<lb />
The May 6 edition of Sports Illustrated has quite a<lb />
variety of articles on almost every sport.<lb />
One article of particular interest concerns the Los<lb />
Angeles Dodgers' outfielder, Frank Howard, and the Wash-<lb />
ington Senators' number one pitcher, Tom Cheney. Howard<lb />
finally decided to wear glasses and immediately whacked<lb />
three home runs in four games. Cheney has allowed just<lb />
one run in four nine-inning games. He has an unblemished<lb />
4-0 record, and after the first three games had an un-<lb />
blemished earaed-run average of 0.00.<lb />

Pirates Over AC, 2-1<lb />

Pete Barnes pitched the EC j<lb />
Pirates to a narrow 2-1 victory<lb />
over Atlantic Christian last<lb />
Wednesday. Barnes engaged with<lb />
AC hurler Charlie Lockamy in a<lb />
pitchers' doiel as Barnes came out<lb />
on top. Both pitchers went all nine<lb />
innings for their respective teams.<lb />
Barnes, a sophomiore from Wil-<lb />
son, showed his hometown friends<lb />
what an asset he is to the EC pitch-<lb />
ing staff by striking out 12 AC<lb />
batters while giving up just five<lb />
hits and walking none.<lb />
Lockamy allowed only three hits<lb />
scattered throughout the nine in-<lb />
incrs as he walked three and struck<lb />
out six.<lb />
The Pirates scored their two<lb />
rins on a pinch-hit by infielder<lb />
Roger Hedgecock. The seventh-<lb />
inning single came with two out<lb />
and with Buddy Bovender on third<lb />
case and Lacy West on second.<lb />
Both runners were knicked in by<lb />
Hedgecock's single.<lb />
The only AC run came off center-<lb />
fielder Fat Dixon's eighth inning<lb />
solo home run. Dixon also had a<lb />
single.<lb />
The Pirates are now 13-4-1 fr<lb />
the season.<lb />
For the second time in six days<lb />
the hard-hitting Pirates showed the<lb />
Elon 'Christians little pity as they<lb />
whipped them again last Friday,<lb />
13-1. On Saturday, Apirl 27, Soph-<lb />
omore Mike Smith hurled the Pi-<lb />
rates over the Christians, 17-3. This<lb />
time it was Lacy West, the senior<lb />
ace-hurler of the squad, who pitch-<lb />
ed for the Pirates. West threw a<lb />
8 23 inning 4-hit shutout, while<lb />
striking out nine and walking none.<lb />
WTest, the control specialist, was<lb />
scored on in the last of the ninth<lb />
when an Elon batsman "was safe<lb />
on an error, went all the way to<lb />
third on another error and scored<lb />
on a single by shortstop Jim Shield.<lb />
The Pirates oipened their scoring<lb />
surge early in the game, scoring<lb />
two runs in the first inning on a<lb />
walk, a balk, a double by Junior<lb />
Green, and a single by West. They<lb />
went on to score two more in the<lb />
second on Fred Rodiriquez's double<lb />
and singles by Carlton Barnes and<lb />
Buddy Bovender.<lb />
Tommy Kidd proved that his<lb />
grand-slam home run in the first<lb />
Elon game was nothwrg hard to do<lb />
by slamming a three-run homer in<lb />
the seventh. Kidd now has four<lb />
home runs for the last six games.<lb />
The long-hall hitter had a total of<lb />
four runs-hatted-in for the day,<lb />
increasing his total to 23, tops on<lb />
the team.<lb />
The Pirates scored five more<lb />
runs in the eighth on three walks,<lb />
two sacrifice flies, and singles by<lb />
Barnes and Bovender.<lb />
Coach Earl Smith led his team<lb />
to their fourteenth triumph against<lb />
four losses. It was West's sixth<lb />
win for eight games.<lb />
in<lb />
EC's diamond men are idle<lb />
