AZALEA FUN<lb />
In view of the tremendous amount of damage done<lb />
at the beaches around Wilmington last spring during the<lb />
4-alea Festival, it seemed like a good idea to run this<lb />
editorial from th Wilmington Star. It appeared im-<lb />
mediately after the Azalea Festival last year. We sin-<lb />
cerely hope the festival this year will be great fun and<lb />
frolic, but somewhat less damaging to the beaches and<lb />
consequently to the reputation of the college.<lb />
COLLEGE CROWDS AT BEACH<lb />
Officials and private citizens of Carolina Beach are<lb />
taking a wise step in seeking some measures and pro-<lb />
cedures to control college students when they descend<lb />
upon the resort in large numbers. The situation there<lb />
during the Azalea Festival week-end, when the con-<lb />
duct of many students was deplorable, is a warning and<lb />
it is being heeded.<lb />
The people of Carolina Beach want their resort<lb />
to be popular, but they also have an understandable<lb />
desire to protect their good reputation which has been<lb />
built up over the years.<lb />
It certainly should be possible for Carolina Beach<lb />
to be both popular with the college crowd and also main-<lb />
tain a fine reputation. And we believe the people of<lb />
Carolina Beach can come to some agreement which will<lb />
permit them to cope with situations such as arose dur-<lb />
ing the Azalea Festival.<lb />
Of course, now is the time to begin working on that<lb />
problem, and we are glad to see the citizens of that com-<lb />
munity doing exactlv that. There is certainly no reason<lb />
to procrastinate. While the next Festival is still nearly<lb />
a year in the future, it will be well to have the problem<lb />
ironed out far in advance.<lb />
It is evident that Carolina Beach is having some<lb />
of the same problems encountered by authorities in Fort<lb />
Lauderdak, Fla where once a year, thousands of col-<lb />
lege students pour in for a brief holiday, and proceed<lb />
to try to take the town apart.<lb />
Authorities, of course, cannot condone any violence,<lb />
but it is also obvious that jails aren't large enough to<lb />
hold all prospective inmates.<lb />
It is -very likely that Carolina Beach is going to be<lb />
the mecca for thousands of college students who will use<lb />
the Festival as the appropriate time for their weekend<lb />
holiday. We understand that many individual students<lb />
and students groups already are saving and planning<lb />
for next year's Festival and the weekend trip to Carolina<lb />
Beach.<lb />
Many of them will be welcomed; many will not.<lb />
It will be up to Carolina Beach to establish procedures to<lb />
meet the situation in the best possible way for all con-<lb />
cerned. And thev are doing the right thing in tackling the<lb />
problem now. (April 19, 1962 Wilmington Star)<lb />
VOTERS<lb />
We have just one question about the elections that<lb />
were held last week. Despite the complete effort of every-<lb />
one even remotely involved to get more people to the<lb />
polls, almost 200 fewer people voted this year than voted<lb />
last year. This makes one wonder about that sadly over-<lb />
used word "apathy But can anyone else think of a bet-<lb />

Grossest Tyve Of Insult<lb />
By HERB WILLIAMS<lb />
The recent decision of the N. C.<lb />
General Assembly's Joint Appro-<lb />
priations Committee to hold secret<lb />
sessions is the grossest type of<lb />
insult to the public. Lt was a aad<lb />
day for the people of N. C. when<lb />
tht men we elected denied us the<lb />
right to know what they are doing<lb />
with our money.<lb />
It seems that Senator Tom<lb />
White. Chairman of the Commit-<lb />
tee, "suggested" tine secret meet-<lb />
ings, and his "suggestion" was<lb />
voted on and accepted by the other<lb />
members. Is u possible that there<lb />
is more behind the other members<lb />
voting for Sen. White's sugges-<lb />
tion" than has been revealed so<lb />
far? Sen. White's name has been<lb />
mentioned in the newspapers sev-<lb />
eral times recently as a possible<lb />
candidate for higher offices than<lb />
that of Senator. He is evidently a<lb />
man who swings a good deal of<lb />
weight around the 1963 Legisla-<lb />
ture. Could it be that many of the<lb />
members of his committee voted<lb />
for his "suggestion because they<lb />
were afraid to oppose him? Maybe<lb />
this situation just demonstrates the<lb />
survial of the fittest principle; in<lb />
other words, maybe Sen. White is<lb />
the top man on that 1.7 billion<lb />
dollar heap of money, and no one<lb />
opposes him for fear of getting<lb />
kicked off. If this is the case, per-<lb />
haps it is time for the public to<lb />
iput an end to this little game of<lb />
"king of the mountain<lb />
Or perhaps Sen. White's "sug-<lb />
gestion" was just the excuse some<lb />

of our legislators have been wait-<lb />

people who are doing ordinary jobs.<lb />
The problem is that their jobs go<lb />
up for 'Vi-abs even few years.<lb />
Naturally, each one of them is<lb />
going to look out for himself in<lb />
terms of reelection. Besides, who<lb />
warns B bunch of nasty old news-<lb />
man cluttering up the place, espec-<lb />
ially when they might go out and<lb />
rat on some fine, upstanding mem-<lb />
ber of the committee for trying to<lb />
make a perfectly legal "comprise"<lb />
on some point in the budget?<lb />
I really do not know why the<lb />
committee voted for secret sess-<lb />
ions. But the fact remains that<lb />
they did vote for them, and I do<lb />
not like it one little bit! I thought<lb />
we elected a legislature, not an<lb />
underground organization. The<lb />
money they are talking about and<lb />
voting on belongs to me. and I<lb />
ant to know what they are doing<lb />
with it after they have already<lb />
done it. I want a running account<lb />
of the issues so I can put in my<lb />
"two cent's worth" to my repre-<lb />

to coin an old Army phrase, "I<lb />

we have now will not tell us what<lb />
they are doh with our money, then<lb />
I am for electing some who will.<lb />
In fact, if the public really showed<lb />
how they feel a,bout this issue, as<lb />
they should, I'll bet the seem ses-<lb />

SPORTS REVIEW<lb />
By RON DOWDY<lb />
I believe EC owes a lot of credit to its football coach,<lb />
Clarence Stasavich for his constant enthusiasm in all sports.<lb />
Coach Stas believes his athletes should keep in shape year-<lb />
roundnot just during football season. He holds his Winter<lb />
Drills early so that they won't interfere with the football<lb />
players adding that extra strength to a spring sport. There<lb />
is at least one football player participating in each EC spring<lb />
sport They not only add their needed talent but also their<lb />
incentive which is so necessary for any team to win any<lb />
game.<lb /><lb />
Vaguely mentioned, probably overlooked by many of our<lb />
readers, in our last edition was the fact that our Lambda Chi's<lb />
recently won the State Fraternity Basketball Championship.<lb />
This crown was nothing easy for the Lambda Chi's to win<lb />
but with their never ceasing desire and determination, they<lb />
were unequalled.<lb />
To pinpoint their most valuable player would be no easy<lb />
job, but I believe many will agree that Ed Dunn proved quite<lb />
important during all of the games.<lb />
Congratulations to the Lambda Chi's for bringing such<lb />
a distinction to our school and their fraternity.<lb /><lb />
Our track men open their 1963 campaign early this<lb />
month. Even though all of the meets are to be held at other<lb />
schools, we can look forward to another good season.<lb /><lb />
The intra-mural softball and bowling leagues are soon<lb />
to open. All managers andor representatives are reminded<lb />
of the penalty for games forfeited.<lb /><lb />
Due to the limited space in today's paper, only the Wake<lb />
Forest baseball game will be reported. The Pirates have won<lb />
5 out of 6 games, losing only to Ithaca in their first meeting.<lb />
The team seems to be headed for another N.A.I.A. crown.<lb />
At the plate, Sophomore C. B. Barnes and Frosh Buddy<lb />
Bovender are leading the team, with Lacy West leading the<lb />
hurlers. Barnes and Bovender both cany a powerful stick<lb />
for the team as well as being sharp perfectionists on the<lb />
diamond.<lb />

owner and operator of Windjammer<lb />

following a tradition set by Yank-<lb />

ing Johnson, and we'll keep it going<lb />
as long as there are people with<lb />
adventure in their hearts and a<lb />

Capt. Burke added that Yankee<lb />
Clipper will carry a crew of pro-<lb />
fessional seamen, but all passen-<lb />
gers who wish may stand wheel<lb />
watches and learn to tend a sheet<lb />
and splice a line. Classes in nrarlin-<lb />
spike seamanship and navigation<lb />
will be held, and the ship's library<lb />
will be well stocked with volumes<lb />
on nautical lore as well as books<lb />
about countries and islands to be<lb />
visited. The ship's complement will<lb />
include a marine scientist and a<lb />
historian who will give informal<lb />
lectures illustrated by slides and<lb />
movies. A physician will also be<lb />
aboard.<lb />
"This is strictly a joint-venture<lb />
Burke emphasized, "with each pas-<lb />
senger paying a share of the ex-<lb />
penses. The actual cost will come<lb />
to only about $12 a day, which will<lb />
include all meals and other ordinary<lb />
shipboard expenses.<lb />
As space permits, we'll accept<lb />
applications for various segments<lb />
of the cruise as well as for the en-<lb />

new faces and new blood from time<lb />
to time throughout the year, which<lb />
makes things more interesting for<lb />
