STUDENT SENATE<lb />
When the student senate voted Monday night to<lb />
keep the experience requirement for president of the<lb />
SGA as it now reads, (See page 1) they negated, at<lb />
least for the majority of the students at East Caro-<lb />
lina, the democratic ideals and traditions of equal op-<lb />
portunity. The action effectively emasculates the chances<lb />
of any student who might wish to run for SGA presi-<lb />
dent in the March elections and who has not had the<lb />
necessary one year experience on the student senate.<lb />
Additionally, the schedule of meetings has been so re-<lb />
arranged as to make it impossible for the proposal to<lb />
be reconsidered in time for the election of next years<lb />
officers. (A feat of duplicity and dissimulation that may<lb />
unfortunately prevent the flaying of a few political<lb />
hides.)<lb />
Whether consciously or unconsciously so, a negative<lb />
vote on the motion was a vote to more firmly entrench<lb />
minority control in student affairs. It is our sincere hope<lb />
that if this action is again brought before the senate for<lb />
consideration they will rise to their responsibilities as<lb />
the representatives of the students and vote to establish<lb />
equality of opportunity. It is our belief that if the stu-<lb />
dents themselves are interested enough to discuss the<lb />
matter with their representatives or write letters to he<lb />
EAST CAROLINIAN expressing their opinions such<lb />
a vote would be facilitated. The voting record of any<lb />
senate member on the proposal can be obtained by calling<lb />
or coming by the EAST CAROLINIAN office.<lb />
GOLDWATER TOO<lb />
Editorial Freedom<lb />
If for nothing else, this academic year at two<lb />
major United States colleges will be noted for a breach<lb />
of editorial freedom. Earlier this year, the editor of<lb />
the Colorado Daily allowed a philosophy student at the<lb />
Univrsity to write an editorial which cast a bad light<lb />
on the publicity-conscious Senator Barry Goldwater<lb />
from Arizona. The powerful Senator merely flexed<lb />
his "muscles" and both the editor and Quig Newton,<lb />
President of UC, were out of jobs. After this little poli-<lb />
tical manuver, staff members of the Colorado Daily<lb />
changed the Daily's slogan from "71 Years of Editorial<lb />
Freedom" to merely "71 Years The old slogan was re-<lb />
instated after Tom Parmeter was elected to take the<lb />
position of editor.<lb />
More recently, Ron Buel, the editor of the Uni-<lb />
versity of Oregon's campus daily, The Oregon Emerald,<lb />
has written an editorial implying that the practice of<lb />
hazing exists among campus fraternities. The editorial<lb />
appeared after a meeting of the Inter-Fraternity Coun-<lb />
cil Tribunal wThere three fraternities had been charged<lb />
with the offense of hazing pledges. Ken Wilson, then<lb />
chairman, ended the meeting when he resigned and said,<lb />
"The guilty are trying the guilty After the editorial<lb />
appeared, the Associated Students at the University<lb />
of Oregon Senate, by a 13-12 vote, demanded Bud's<lb />
resignation and forwarded the request in a letter to<lb />
the Board of Publications.<lb />
At the time of this writing no action has been taken<lb />
on the request of the Senate. However, the request in<lb />
itself is as dangerous at the House Un-American Ac-<lb />
tivities Committee which takes the assumed position of<lb />
having the priviledge of being able to violate the First<lb />
Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.<lb />
It is the First Amendment which prohibits Congress<lb />
from passing any law abridging the Freedoms of r$-<lb />
ligion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.<lb />
If no action is taken on the request, the Board of<lb />
Publications should be commended. Futhermore, it should<lb />
also be established that a student group of amateur<lb />
politicians and potential Barry Goldwaters have no con-<lb />
trol over the editorial policy of the campus newspaper.<lb />
When a student senate steps so far out of bounds, nec-<lb />
essary reprimands are in order; and, if necessary,<lb />
abolishment. jim forsyth<lb />

Too Much Criticism<lb />
MADISON, Wis. (I. P.) <lb />
There may be too many books<lb />
produced, too much criticism, and<lb />
too much s(pecializajtion today in<lb />
the field of literature, according<lb />
to Helen C. White, University of<lb />
Wfeconsii scholar. Prolific writer<lb />
and new president of the Modern<lb />
Humanities Research Association,<lb />
Professor "White, in the presi-<lb />
dential address "Changing Styles<lb />
in Literary Studies recently<lb />
(told her American MHRA mem-<lb />
bers:<lb />
"The study of literature is al-<lb />
ways unfinished business and that<lb />
business just now is proceeding<lb />
apace. Indeed, some of us who<lb />
have been more concerned about<lb />
the opening of opportunities for<lb />
young scholars to publish are be-<lb />
ginning to wonder if perhaps<lb />
there is not too much of the mak-<lb />
ing of books<lb />
There is need for self-restrain<lb />
and for discrimination in writing<lb />
and publishing, Miss White warn-<lb />
ed. "But that is a problem of our<lb />
more abundant age all along the<lb />
line she said. "When we come to<lb />
grips with it in our own field, we<lb />
may begin to make our contribu-<lb />
tion to the larger solution.<lb />
"The modern emphasis on criti-<lb />
cism has certainly furnished the<lb />
young literary student with valu-<lb />
able tools of analysis and explora-<lb />
tion she continued. "But there<lb />
are certain risks that we run, not<lb />
inevitable if we are aware of<lb />
them, but certainly to be reckoned<lb />
with. It is quite true that wide<lb />
reading can often be aimless with-<lb />
out critical direction and reflec-<lb />
tion, but it is no less true that<lb />
critical reflection without wide<lb />
reading can be a very sterile<lb />
thing and even perverse.<lb />
"Oontemplating the enthusiasm<lb />
of certain students, I hav -won-<lb />
dered if the close study of a text<lb />
of fpoetry were not the new refuge<lb />
for the literary student gifted<lb />
with liveliness of fancy and glib-<lb />
ness of tongue but small reading<lb />
and less history<lb />
Specialization is both the way<lb />
of our modern technical and scien-<lb />
tific civilization and the inevitable<lb />
consequence of our very achieve-<lb />
ments, according to Prof. White,<lb />
who also delivered the same talk<lb />
recently in London to British<lb />
members of the humanities re-<lb />
search group<lb />
She cited E. M. Tillyard's sug-<lb />
gestion of a "general practitioner<lb />
of academic critfeism" as an ideal<lb />
not to be forgotten in the present<lb />
era of often premature specializa-<lb />
tion<lb />

switch over. Also, if you were sit-<lb />
ting in the balcony, there was con-<lb />
stant talking- coming from the pro-<lb />
jection room. There was also sound<lb />
from the movie coming from the<lb />
speaker in the projection room,<lb />
which was very distracting to<lb />
everyone in the balcony. Then<lb />
toward the last of the movie, the<lb />
light started fading so you could<lb />
hardly see the movie and nothing<lb />
was done about this for several<lb />
minutes. When something was done,<lb />
it was feeble nrd temporary.<lb />
I realize that it may have been<lb />
the first movie that this person<lb />
had run by himself and it looked<lb />
like this was the case.<lb />
The free movie has been a grcat<lb />
service to the students, but I<lb />
would not blame the students one<lb />
bit if they showed disappointment<lb />
for this kind of production. The<lb />
movie would have been very good,<lb />
j it had not been for all of the<lb />
interruptions.<lb />
I know fcat if any officials had<lb />
been .there to enjoy the movie, they<lb />
would have been very disappointed,<lb />
as I was and I doubt that this<lb />
would fee running any more<lb />

Dr. Joanne Curnutt, assistant<lb />
professor of music at Longwood<lb />
College, Farmville, Va will lec-<lb />
ture on organ music next Monday<lb />
at 10 a.m. in the Austin audi-<lb />
torium.<lb />
She will speak on the evolution<lb />
of the chorale prelude from the<lb />
time of Buxtehude through Bach.<lb />
The lecture is open to the public<lb />
and is free.<lb />
Dr. Curnutt came to Longwood<lb />
College from Rochester, New<lb />
York, where she received her doc-<lb />
torate in musical arts at the East-<lb />
man School of Music. A native<lb />
of Missouri, she received her<lb />
bachelor of music from Cornell<lb />
College, Iowa, and her master's<lb />
at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.<lb />
She taught at Mary Hardin<lb />
Baylor College in Texas for a<lb />
year as a harpsicord instructor<lb />
and for four years directed the<lb />
Temple School of Music in Texas,<lb />
an institution she founded. She<lb />
spent three years studying organ<lb />

mature<lb />
adults. They are also concerned to<lb />
an important degree, about the<lb />
improvement of the educational<lb />
process. Therefore, I think they<lb />
should v asked for judgment on<lb />
their instructors. . <lb />
According to Dean Fisher, this<lb />
proposition has two specific ob-<lb />
jectives: first, to stimulate the<lb />
highest level of quality of instruc-<lb />
tion possible; second, to provide<lb />
tangible evidence of teacher per-<lb />
formance comparable to that<lb />
available for evaluating research<lb />
performance. Student evaluation<lb />
of instruction is designed to aid<lb />
the teacher by helping him define<lb />
his weaknesses so he may strive to<lb />
improve in those areas.<lb />
Because this is the first college<lb />
in the university to undertake<lb />
such a program, it has been view-<lb />
ed with great interest by Dean of<lb />
Faculty S. Town Slephenson.<lb />
The present plan Is for the stu-<lb />

when his grade cannot be influenc-<lb />

the concerned instructor will not<lb />

SPORTS REVIEW<lb />
By LLOYD "STACK" LANE<lb />
Pirate Tailback Bill Cline limbers up his throwing arm as Coach Stasavich observes.<lb />
Coach Stasavich Experiments With<lb />
New Material; Discusses EC Recruiting<lb />
"I am really pleased, but, there i though the winter drill session<lb />
has already passed the goal the<lb />
is still room for a lot of improve-<lb />
ment" is what coach Clarence<lb />
Stasavich had to say y about the<lb />
prepress of the Pirates 1963 Win-<lb />
ter football drills. He went on to<lb />
say "that the teams have not be-en<lb />
divided up in personnel as they<lb />
should be which causes for a lot<lb />
of flexibility an the squads. They<lb />
will be switched around from<lb />
positfon-to-position and team-to-<lb />
team until it is decided where<lb />
they will be of best assistance to<lb />
the squad The rising sophomores<lb />
on the team seem to be taking up<lb />
most of the time who posted a 2-1<lb />
season dtaring their Freshman<lb />
Year (62). The main objectives<lb />
are to choose the correct personnel<lb />
to do a lot more blocking and<lb />
tackling with other fundamental<lb />
skills and to experiment with new<lb />
and different offensive and de-<lb />
fensive formation.<lb />
Coach Stasavich feels as<lb />
Pirates attained during their 62<lb />
Spring drill session.<lb />
The recruiting of new athletes<lb />
for the Pirate football team uses<lb />
his area, Eastern North Carolina<lb />
as a nucleus. After trying this<lb />
area first they turn secondly to<lb />
bbe Western portion of the state<lb />
and they, when needed, go<lb />
;out-of-state. They try every year<lb />
to get a few out-of-state athletes<lb />
on the team to add a different<lb />
type of atmosphere to the squad<lb />
and it spreads the name of the<lb />
school to many other areas around<lb />
the states.<lb />
When asked about our grant-m-<lb />
aid program here, Coach Stasa-<lb />
vich said, "I feel as though E. C.<lb />
I1 as a good program of grants<lb />
for the schedule of teams- we play;<lb />
but It is not enough for competi-<lb />
tion in the Southern Conference.<lb />
I am strongly in favor of grants<lb />
because of the time football re-<lb />
quires and it helps to send some<lb />
people through school who ordi-<lb />
narily would not be able to attend.<lb />
I believe in giving (part-grants to<lb />
the new boys to allow for a re-<lb />
ward to those who make good and<lb />
our budget doesn't allow us to<lb />
give but so many<lb />
The entire football coaching<lb />
staff is involved in the recruiting<lb />
program here at E. C.<lb />
Although the '63 football sched-<lb />
ules have not been released it is<lb />
believe the frosh will have 5<lb />
games, the maximum allowed<lb />
under N.C.A-A. regulation and the<lb />
varsity team will have either 9 or<lb />
10 with 10 being the maximum<lb />
under N.C.A.A. regulation<lb />

Pirates Defeat Belmont Abbey;<lb />
West Scores 24 In 78-49 Win<lb />
The Pirates made it two in a<lb />
row on ihe road by defeating Bel-<lb />
mont Abbey's Crusaders by 29<lb />
points, 78-49, in the Abbey gym<lb />
Monday might The Pirates had<lb />
beaten Atlantic Christian by one<lb />
point, 70-69, the previous Satur-<lb />
day. The victory over the Crusad-<lb />
ers gave the Pirates a 2-3 record<lb />
on the current road trip.<lb />
A strong defense a fast break,<lb />
and four men hitting in double<lb />
figures proved to be the formula<lb />
that was needed to obtain the vic-<lb />
tory.<lb />
The Pirates took full advantage<lb />
of the Belmont team in the open-<lb />
ing minutes by jumping off to a<lb />
16-0 lead before the cold Abbey<lb />
quintet could hit. The Abbey final-<lb />
ly found the range on a 15 footer<lb />
by Sullivan after seven minutes<lb />
had elasped in the initial period.<lb />
The Pirates were able to outscore<lb />
the Crusaders 19-16 for the re-<lb />
mainder of the half and left the<lb />
court at intermission with & 35-16<lb />
margin.<lb />
Coach Smith's team did not ease<lb />
up, and with the fast break work-<lb />
ing to perfection steadily pulled<lb />
ahead of the Belmont five. Al-<lb />
though Sullivan hit seven of thir-<lb />
teen field goal attempts for the<lb />
Abbey, the Pirates lead reached<lb />
a high point of 30 points with<lb />
1:50 seconds left in the contest <lb />
74-44. Belmont managed to outscore<lb />
the Pirates 5-4 to round out the<lb />
game; however, the EC team left<lb />
the floor with an impressive 78-49<lb />
victory.<lb />
Lacy West was high scorer in the<lb />
contest with 24 points 10 field<lb />
goals and 4-4 from the line. Bill<lb />
Otte and Bill Brogden hit 14 apiece.<lb />
Richie Williams was the fourth<lb />
Pirate in double figures with 12.<lb />
Belmont Abbey had two in the<lb />
10-plus column. Sullivan lead the<lb />
Abbey with 17. MacDermott hit 12.<lb />
Otte lead in rebounding with 12.<lb />
West pulled down 11 more for the<lb />
Pirates.<lb />
The EC team had a near perfect<lb />
night from the free .throw line<lb />
hitting 14 of 15 attempts.<lb />
The win gives the Bucs a 12-9<lb />
season record; Belmont's record<lb />
stands at 5-14. The Pirates will<lb />

Cincinnati Coach Ed Junker and Wichita n.<lb />

The Bearcats found themselves victims<lb />

POLLS SHOWED A MARKED DIFFERENCE<lb />
Last Saturday broke up the uniformity in<lb />

four teams in both polls are the same in their ran ;<lb />
at this point the similarity ends. Cincinnati, Duke, I<lb />
and Arizona State are the top four reams in<lb />
The marked difference is in the holders of the v'<lb />
10th spots. The UPI list Stanford, Colorad <lb />
Tech in these positions, while the AP places M<lb />
State, Auburn, and New York University in coil<lb />
spots. Every one probably has his own opinion as t<lb />
way a team should be ranked, but it would be-<lb />
to note how these two polls base their selection?.<lb />
ACC fans will probably favor the AP poll morel<lb />
the UPI. The AP lists North Carolina as the 2<lb />
team in the country and ranks Wake Forest 32nd K<lb />
Virginia is listed as 33rd.<lb />
The track schedule has been posted today, it<lb />
