titles and the new status will mean<lb />
to their instructional organizations.<lb />
Recognition By<lb />
Professional Organizations<lb />
Each stated that the new title<lb />
of "school" would result in great-<lb />

Both Deans pointed out also that<lb />
a School of Music and a School of<lb />

titles will prove more attractive to<lb />
students than departments of in-<lb />

Answer<lb />
LITTLE MANONJAMPU&<lb />
We dom't usually bother to answer letters of criti-<lb />
cism, but since practically the only people who feel in-<lb />
clined to write us are those people who are cntacaO of<lb />
the newspaper, we feel that perhaps a clarification of a<lb />
few of our policies is in order. This may save a few of<lb />
our would-be critics the trouble of composing a letter<lb />
t0 Whave' said that we don't usually bother to answ-<lb />
er letters of criticism. We adhere to this policy because<lb />
constant defense of ourselves would result in the paper<lb />
becoming a self-centered publication-a purpose for<lb />
which it is not meant to exist. Also, we feel that the<lb />
executive staff of ttajs newspaper is probably more wel<lb />
versed in journalistic practices on both the college level<lb />
and the commercial level than any of our critics. Gen-<lb />
erally our critics are arguing about something of which<lb />
theknoNv little or nothing. We have already explained<lb />
why we have made an exception to this policy.<lb />
Hardly a day passes that someone doesn t a5k,<lb />
eithefin conversation or letter, "vem-<lb />
mendations" instead of criticism This u, the P"<lb />
we encounter most frequently, but we feel that it is also<lb />
the teart intelligent argument. The peop e who n st<lb />
upon nothing but what they.tern (rather loosely) in-<lb />
structive criticism" are saying, in effect, If you can t<lb />
solve it, don't mention it The stupidity of this point<lb />
of viewis obvious. This is something hki; saying It s<lb />
too bad that Red China Kas invaded Indi but don t<lb />
talk about it unless you can get them to sign a tiuce<lb />
We feel that the first step m solving any pioblem is<lb />
Realizing that a problem exists. We don't even pretend to<lb />
have thf solution to many of the problems upon which we<lb />
editorialize, but we certainly aren't going to ignore these<lb />
Droblems because of this. .<lb />
Another criticism which we frequently encounter<lb />
comes from the various clubs and fraternal organiza-<lb />
tions that have found it increasingly difficult to get<lb />
themselves mentioned within these pages. This pro-<lb />
bably the most petty criticism that we have encountered<lb />
and it emphasizes a point we made earhknl<lb />
knowledge in the field of journalism on the part of oui<lb />
critics. We challenge them to find in the better college<lb />
newspapers of the nation, organization news of the type<lb />
that thev would have us print. We have heard this type<lb />
of criticism from these people so often that we are be-<lb />
ginning to wonder if their clubs have any other purpose<lb />
than to gain publicity for themselves. (<lb />
If you feel that the Editor of this publication is not<lb />
domo- his job well, we would suggest that there may be<lb />
something wrong with the method by which editors are<lb />
selectedhe didn't seize his position by force. But, good<lb />
or bad, he is the Editor and until such time as he resigns<lb />
or is otherwise removed from office, the EAST CARO-<lb />
LINIAN will be operated in the manner which he teels<lb />
is best.<lb />

Short Stories That I Never Got<lb />

-Like, man, what I remembered<lb />
was a nightmare. That party.<lb />
Jumping around, dancing, shouting,<lb />
being; a wit. I was a kind of "free"<lb />
type. But I must have gone out of<lb />
my head and Bruce and somebody<lb />
went out and got some whisky.<lb />
What happened then I don't know.<lb />
"God the next morning I didn't<lb />
want to open my eyes; it was bad<lb />
enough to know that I was alive.<lb />
Whooie, my mouth felt like it had<lb />
been used as an incinerator to burn<lb />
dirty foam rubber. Yet it seemed<lb />
that my head was miles off. Man,<lb />
like Nirvana, my mind was aware<lb />
of miy well-being body snuggled up<lb />
in the warmth of the bed, yet I was<lb />
out of it. I didn't feel a thing. I<lb />
slowly cracked one eye; man, it<lb />
was too much. The whole sun was<lb />
beaming at me. I opened both eyes<lb />
to the bright foggy haze, and, hell,<lb />
I didn't know where I was. I shut<lb />
them quick. I figured I must have<lb />
really lost my head last night. I<lb />
rolled gently on my side. God, I<lb />
put my hands to my forehead, but<lb />
I didn't feel anything. Man, I op-<lb />
ened my eyes and sat up. I put my<lb />
hands t0 my head like a vise, and<lb />
they met each other. I went lower.<lb />
And on my shoulder the only thing<lb />
I could find was my neck. I had lost<lb />
my head.<lb />
"I thought, 'Get dressed; find<lb />
your head I was pretty sure I<lb />
could dress myself, feeling my deaf,<lb />
blind, tasteless, and smelless way;<lb />
but what could I put on my neck?<lb />
God, I didn't want to touch it. It<lb />
might have been slimy, greasy,<lb />
gooey, an open wound; theai, of<lb />
course, it might have been like the<lb />
stub of a cut-off finger, kind of<lb />
healed like. How could I go on the<lb />
street with just the naked stump<lb />
of a neck? I might be arrested.<lb />
The only thing I 'had was a scarf. I<lb />
could write a note to my landladiy<lb />
and make a burbling sound for her<lb />
to read it:<lb />
" 'Dear Mrs. Athey, could you<lb />
do me a favor? It seems as if I've<lb />
misplaced my head . <lb />
"No, no, mo. Hell. I had to find<lb />
it. God, it might dry up without<lb />
me, then where would I be? How<lb />
long had I been separated?"<lb />
"I thought, 'What time is it?'<lb />
- If I could see the clock, I might<lb />
have been able to tell. I turned on<lb />
the radio, but God, I couldn't hear<lb />
it.<lb />

More Letters<lb />
To The Editor:<lb />
In a recent editorial in the East<lb />
Carolinian there appeared the state-<lb />
ment . . the Consolidated Univer-<lb />
sity! Who needs it?" Well, this<lb />
may or may not be so, but may I<lb />
say this.<lb />
My concern for the moment is<lb />
not with the issue of East Car-<lb />
clina's becoming a part of the Con-<lb />
solidated University, but more so<lb />
with the unvarnished arrogance<lb />
of this statement.<lb />
It has been the policy of the<lb />
East Carolinian during this year,<lb />
so it seems, to introduce a little<lb />
spirit and, perhaps, a little con-<lb />
troversy, into the life on the East<lb />
Carolina campus. In this attempt<lb />
the editorial staff should be ad-<lb />
mired and congratulated.<lb />
However, I think that in the<lb />
cause of a sane and sound approach<lb />
to some of these more controversial<lb />
issues, caution should be exercised<lb />
in voicing opinions which might<lb />
not be in accordance with those<lb />
held by the majority of students.<lb />
East Carolina has come a long<lb />
way in the past four or five years,<lb />
and deserves due recognition of its<lb />
accomplishments. But, one thin it<lb />
doesn't need, and can illeJford, is<lb />
the bad publicity which will arise<lb />
from such simple-minded state-<lb />
ments as this.<lb />
In my opinion, the sfeaff member<lb />
responsible for this dire lack of<lb />
judgment should spend leas of<lb />
lidSs time in pseudo-eophisticated<lb />
mental reflection and more on seek-<lb />
ing constructive recommendations.<lb />

What will happen in the event of<lb />
a nuclear attack? Though not a<lb />
pleasant thought, this is one which<lb />
should be seriously considered. In<lb />
a recent issue of the N. C. State<lb />
Technician, an article appeared con-<lb />
cerning assignment of students to<lb />
certain fallout shelter areas on<lb />
oampus. These assignments pro-<lb />
vide specific survival instructions<lb />
for all students in the face of nu-<lb />
i lear attack. Each student is as-<lb />
signed to a certain area. Most of<lb />
these shelters are supplied with<lb />
first aid equipment, food and wa-<lb />
ter.<lb />
How is EC prepared for such<lb />
emergencies? An interview with<lb />
Dr. Frank Eller, who is in<lb />
charge of radiation protection<lb />
on the campus, revealed that<lb />
several steps have been tak-<lb />
en. A detailed plan of emergen-<lb />
cy action has been prepared<lb />
and distributed for the li-<lb />
brary. Radiation detection<lb />
equipment has been placed in<lb />
certain strategic locations on<lb />
campus for several months.<lb />
This measure came into ex-<lb />
istence long before the most<lb />
recent Cuban incident. The<lb />
equipment will be used for de-<lb />
tecting places of least radia-<lb />
tion on campus.<lb />
Dr. Eller states that in case of<lb />
YRC Elects<lb />
Officers, Adopts<lb />
New Constitution<lb />
Election of officers for 1962-63<lb />
and adoption of a new constitution<lb />
marked the beginning of this year's<lb />

Roy Morris has been chosen as<lb />
chairman of the club. Elected to<lb />
serve with him are Lawrence Behr,<lb />
Vice-Chairman; Jacqueline Benton,<lb />
secretary; Lenward Jones, treas-<lb />
urer; and Nancy Nesbitt, member<lb />
of the club' Executive Council.<lb />
Monthly meetings of the YRC<lb />
have been planned for the 1962-63<lb />
term. Appearing on the programs<lb />
will be a number of off-cam pus<lb />
speakers. Club members are also<lb />
planning activities to increase stu-<lb />
dent interest in the political scene<lb />
and in the Republican Party.<lb />
disaster all students are requested<lb />
to go to the basement hallways<lb />
of 'Jieir dormitories and to remain<lb />
until further notice. Students should<lb />
stay away from doors and keep<lb />
the most possible wall space be-<lb />
tween them and the outside be-<lb />
au ,e it is hoped the campus radio<lb />
can be set uip to broadcast. Stu-<lb />
dents should bring with them some<lb />
type of rations because food and<lb />
waiter supplies will be limited.<lb />
Dr. Eller strongly stresses<lb />
the needlessness for panic in<lb />
case of such emergency. Like-<lb />
ly, any fallout here would only<lb />
make a few people ill. The most<lb />
recently developed bombs ex-<lb />
plode in the upper atmosphere,<lb />
causing minimum fallout. Bar-<lb />
ring a direct hit by a bomb,<lb />
there will be only moderate<lb />
harm here from the standpoint<lb />
of health.<lb />
In fjhe event of disaster, the peo-<lb />
ple of the city of Greenville may<lb />
ttempt to find shelter on the cam-<lb />
pus. The buildings here offer more<lb />
r teetion than any others in east-<lb />

From The Top Of The Stack<lb />

Freshman prospects for next season's varsity team look-<lb />
er good in the game with Newport News last Saturday. Coaeh<lb />
Vansant's boys ended the freshman schedule on the winning<lb />
side of the ledger by beating Newport News 34-13.<lb />
The frosh team has shown continued improvement from<lb />
their first game of the season to the last. They developed<lb />
some excellent single-wing material in the line and back-<lb />
field. If spirit, hustle, and hardnosed competitiveness made<lb />
a national championship team, the frosh would be playing<lb />

Will Tennessee still run the single wing next year? The<lb />
coach says yes, the ALUMNI says no. This brings us to an<lb />
interesting question who really runs a football team?<lb />
The coach or the alumni.<lb />

Bucs Score 28 Points In Last Period;<lb />
Newport News 34-13 In Finale<lb />
The Freshman team made this<lb />
season a winning season as it de-<lb />
feated the Newport News Appren-<lb />
tice School 34-13 in Newport News,<lb />
Virginia, last Saturday. The finale<lb />
cf the season gave the Baby Bucs<lb />
a 2-1 record.<lb />
After trailing 7 to 6 going into<lb />
the fourth quarter, the Baby Bucs<lb />
put their scoring machine in high<lb />
gear and racked up 28 points to<lb />
win.<lb />
The scoring srtarted when Jonn<lb />
McPhaul intercepted an Appren-<lb />
tice pass. Tailback Buddy Boven-<lb />
der went over for the score frotm<lb />
three yards out to give the Pirates<lb />
a 12 to 7 lead. Jerry Wallace booted<lb />
the conversion to increase the lead<lb />
to 13 to 7. Wallace was injured on<lb />
the play because of unnecessary<lb />
roughness, but the penalty was<lb />
refused.<lb />
Newport News was held on<lb />
the next series of downs, and<lb />
the Pirates took over. Passes<lb />
from Bovender to right end<lb />
Ruffin Odom and wingbaek<lb />
Dave Alexander carried the<lb />
pigskin to the Newport 3-<lb />
yard line. Bovender dove over<lb />
for the touchdown that gave<lb />
the Baby Bucs a 19 to 7 lead.<lb />
Dave Alexander took over the<lb />
kicking chores for the injured<lb />
Wallace and kicked the extra<lb />
point. The Pirates discovered<lb />
a kicking specialist as Alex-<lb />
ander had a 3 for 3 day and<lb />
booted the kick-off out of the<lb />
end zone.<lb />
NN took the ball on their 20<lb />
and moved it to the 2i6 before kick-<lb />
ing. The Pirates took over and<lb />
moved the ball to their own 46<lb />
yard line. At the 46, Bovender<lb />
swept rdght end for 54 yards and<lb />
another Piraite TD. Alexander's<lb />
conversion made it 27-7.<lb />
After receiving the kickoff on<lb />
their own 20-yard line because otf<lb />
another out of the end zone kick by<lb />
AJexander, the Apprentices could<lb />
not move and were forced to pant.<lb />
The Bucs took over and started<lb />
a drive for their fourth touchdown,<lb />
only to have Harold Peacock steal<lb />
a Pirate aerial and scamper 36<lb />
yards for a Newport TD. The con-1<lb />
version attempt failed and made<lb />
the score 27 to 13.<lb />
The Baby Bucs were not through<lb />
scoring, however. On the first play<lb />
after the kick off, Bovender went<lb />
02 yards on an off-tackle play to<lb />
the NN 6-yard line. He repeated<lb />
the same play on first and goal as<lb />
he carried the ball over for the<lb />
score. Alexander's extra point try<lb />
was good, and the Pirates led 34<lb />
to 13. This TD rounded out the<lb />
scoring for the game. The last NN<lb />
threat was ended when Jon Rife<lb />
intercelpted an (Apprentice pass.<lb />
The Pirates moved the ball<lb />
exceptionally well all after-<lb />
noon, but mistakes hampered<lb />
their scoring drives in the<lb />
first quarter. EC took the in-<lb />
itial kickoff and moved the<lb />
ball to NN's 16-yard line<lb />
where a Buc fumble ended the<lb />
drive at that point. A few<lb />
minutes later, the Pirates had<lb />
another drive stopped on the<lb />
Apprentice 28-yard line be-<lb />
cause of another fumble. Pen-<lb />
alties held the Bucs back from<lb />
scoring. They were penalized<lb />
50 yards. Even though the Pir-<lb />
ate offense did not score in the<lb />
first half, the defensive team<lb />
allowed the Apprentices only<lb />
20 yards rushing.<lb />
Newport News scored in the sec-<lb />
end quarter on a 65-yard pass play<lb />
from Goger to Easter. The conver-<lb />
sion was good and Newport led<lb />
7 to 0.<lb />
The Bucs were stopped in scor-<lb />
ing territory time and time again<lb />
but could not manage a score. NN<lb />
led 7 to 0 at half time.<lb />
An intercepted pass gave the<lb />
Baby Bucs their first score in the<lb />
third quarter. Norman Swindell<lb />
batted a Newport News (pass into<lb />
the arms of teammate Steve Jen-<lb />
nings. Jennings went 41 yards for<lb />
the score. The conversion play<lb />
was missed, and Newport led 7 to 6<lb />
going into the fourth quarter.<lb />
The Pirate defense was cut-<lb />
standing in holding Newport<lb />
to a total of 33 yards rushing.<lb />
The Pirate offense rushed for<lb />
244 yards and passed for 149<lb />
yards a total of 393 yards<lb />
total offense.<lb />
Outstanding on defense were<lb />
Dave Niell, Steve Jennings, Elmer<lb />
Krusa, John McPhaul, and Rich-<lb />
aid Barnhill. Barnhill broke through<lb />
the Apprentice line on several oc-<lb />
casions to throw Newport News<lb />
backs for minus yardage.<lb />
The blocking ability of Truman<lb />
Hilton, Bill Sheffield, and Norman<lb />
Swindell paved the way for the<lb />
Pirate running attack.<lb />
Injured in the game were right<lb />
tackle and kicker Jerry Wallace<lb />
and defensive captain Ira Bullard<lb />
at the middle linebacker position.<lb />
Although the playing schedule<lb />
is ended, the Baby Bucs will con-<lb />
tinue practice sessions for the next<lb />
two or three weeks to work on<lb />
more basic fundamentals.<lb />
