but admitting that the U. S. was<lb />
forced to resume testing.<lb />
Other prominent issues at the<lb />
volume of all existing NSA<lb />
legislation will be published<lb />
later this year by NSA. When<lb />
this codification of policy is<lb />
released, the EAST CARO-<lb />

a companion structure in location,<lb />
repeats the style of architecture in<lb />
Jones and Aycock dormitories.<lb />
Arrangements in the building,<lb />
however, introduce a new note in<lb />
residence halls on the campus.<lb />
Three wings around a central<lb />
court to the rear of the building<lb />
Lave outside corridors and stair-<lb />
ways. Opening on these on each of<lb />
the four floors of the dormitory<lb />
are four-room suites, each de-<lb />

Each suite has a bathroom.<lb />
In addition to living space<lb />
for students, the dormitory in-<lb />
cludes near the entrance the<lb />
office of the head counselor,<lb />
Edward Nicholson, and a re-<lb />
ception room for visitors, koth<lb />

where students will receive<lb />
their mail is located just to<lb />
the rear of these rooms.<lb />
A recreation room for students<lb />
occupies the basement of the<lb />
ruilding. A TV room, rest rooms,<lb />

Friday, September g<lb />
NSA<lb />
The National Student Association, of which EC is<lb />
a member, is an organization of which many students<lb />
here are unaware. This situation of unawareness is one<lb />
that should be corrected. This is true especially in light<lb />
of some of the legislation passed at the fifteenth NSA<lb />
Congress which just recently adjourned. Much of this<lb />
legislation is concerned with problems that are evident<lb />
here on our own campus. The following bill on individ-<lb />
ual student rights is an example:<lb />
FACT:<lb />
In many universities in this country the administration is<lb />
concerned wiiltih various aspects of students' .personal and non-<lb />
scholastic lives. Schools have instituted regulations on the con-<lb />
sumption of alchoholic beverages other than those imjposed by<lb />
state laws. They have imposed standards of dress, insisted upon<lb />
dormitory curfews, and have restricted smoking for reasons other<lb />
than those of safety and comfort.<lb />
PRLV.CIPLE:<lb />
USN9A recognizes that certain rules are necessary for scho-<lb />
lastic achievement and for the maintenance of minimal order in<lb />
the educational community. However, USNA also believes that<lb />
certain areas of student life are private concerns and should not be<lb />
the subject of university regulations. We believe tlhat the devel-<lb />
opment of ithe ability to make responsible decisions about .pers-<lb />
onal matters is both an important Ipart of the maturation of the<lb />
individual and an essential element of the educationail process.<lb />
We believe that the individual student must be forced to confront<lb />
challenging situations on ,his own. Only by such confrontation can<lb />
the student become (prepared for his role as an autonomous in-<lb />
dividual in a democratic society.<lb />
DECLARATION:<lb />
USNSA deplores administration infringement upon the pers-<lb />
onal rights of individuals. Education consists not only of learn-<lb />
ing in the classroom, but also of active participation in self-<lb />
direction. Upon graduation students cannot be expected to act<lb />
responsibly unless the university 'has continually confronted them<lb />
with situations which have required them to make decisions. When<lb />
the university forces students to take the responsibility for the<lb />
consequences of their decisions it will have helped to develop<lb />
reasonable men and competent citizens.<lb />
USNSA recognizes that perhaps early in a college student's<lb />
career, transitional curfew regulations may be necessary. How-<lb />
ever, the final goal must be a situation in which the individual<lb />
controls, and is responsible for himself. We declare that admin-<lb />
istration restrictions concerning dress, alcoholic beverages, smok-<lb />
ing and curfews interfer with the private lives oi students.<lb />
We also recognize that minimal regulations in the area of<lb />
individual rights may be desirable for maintaining order in the<lb />
academic community. We believe that when such rules are neces-<lb />
sary, they should be legislated by the appropriate student or-<lb />
ganizations.<lb />
ACTION<lb />
USNSA urges student governments to assess the situation on<lb />
their campuses in relation to regulation in the following areas-<lb />
1. dress rules; 2. alcoholic beverages; 3. curfews; 4. smoking.<lb />
We suggest that the student 'government cooperate with ad-<lb />
ministrations and faculties to determine and recognize the rights<lb />
of students' autonomous control over social and moral actions<lb />

cal<lb />
part from my previous p reten-<lb />

and to join other columnists of<lb />
collegiate news)papers in relating"<lb />
whatever whimsy comes to mind<lb />
the hour before deadline. (Notice<lb />
the personal "I" which is bad<lb />
taste and which I never allowed<lb />
myself to use beforeI have al-<lb />
ways regarded the regal "we" of<lb />
editorials as being used by disdain-<lb />
ful prigs).<lb />
The only legitimate purpose that<lb />
I can dream up for flouting my-<lb />
self before the reading public is<lb />
that I shall be making a sort of<lb />
a stock-holder report. We are ail<lb />
stock-hoLdiers in a way. We pay<lb />
ffliteen dollars a quarter to the<lb />
SGA; our names are enrolled on<lb />
the register of Bast Carolina Col-<lb />
lege; we are financially and socially<lb />
effected by any action of, in, on,<lb />
and for Bast Carolina College.<lb />
Naturally this column (in keeping<lb />
with the analogy) will be a mi-<lb />
nority report. I am a minority and<lb />
the readers of the East Carolinian<lb />
are a minority of students.<lb />
(It has been suggested that I<lb />
say -something nice; so if the read-<lb />
er will bear with me, I shall try to<lb />
be as painless as possible.) One of<lb />
the annual -problems of colleges is<lb />
the assimilation of new students,<lb />
especially those fresth from high<lb />
school. The administration's con-<lb />
cern over the fatal f freshmen<lb />
is evident in this year's trial of<lb />
Dean Mallory's innovationthe<lb />
Freshmen Counselor.<lb />
The freshman men were brok-<lb />
en down to groups of forty and<lb />
assigned two counselors. The coun-<lb />
selors had approximately five<lb />
hours to discuss and answer Ques-<lb />
tions touching academic study, col-<lb />
lege regulations an dtheir penal-<lb />
ties, the SGA and its related ac-<lb />
tivities and organization, fra,<lb />
ternities, religious Bfe, and stu-<lb />
dent behavior (in public places)<lb />
With the cooperation of Tommy<lb />
Mallison and his SGA, some thirty<lb />
upperelaaamen were selected as<lb />
these Freshmen Counselors. Al-<lb />
though the were referred to as<lb />
campus leaders not all were<lb />

weekend at the seashore. It never<lb />
fails that we more thoughtful ones<lb />
:ake along more than we'll need,<lb />
which may be better than taking<lb />
less. Sweaters for sitting outdoors<lb />
in the cool of the evening could be<lb />
replaced by truly portable air con-<lb />
ditioners. Or the endless pairs of<lb />
shorts would gladly be enchanged<lb />
for one pair of nice warm wool<lb />
slacks in what feels like the North<lb />
Pole.<lb />
Along with the endless extras,<lb />
we always seem to forget the sim-<lb />
ple necessities. Like what good is<lb />
a dress with belt loops without the<lb />
belt? Or the extra French cuffed<lb />
shirt without the cuff links?<lb />
A friend told me he watched<lb />
a girl at the airport, planning to<lb />
so to Germany, take six pounds<lb />
of assorted cosmetics out of an<lb />
overweight bag and distribute<lb />
them to girls friends who were<lb />
seeing her off. The bag was still<lb />
four pounds too heavy though half<lb />
its contents could have been easily<lb />
and cheaply bought on the other<lb />
side of the Atlantic. No wonder<lb />
boys are always muttering, Girls<lb />
For comparison, take my<lb />
father. He'd shw up at the air-<lb />
port wearing one of those wash-<lb />
and-dry suits carrying one small<lb />
bag containing socks, underclothes,<lb />
and an extra shirt. He wouldn't<lb />
meed handkerchiefs because tissues<lb />
could be purchased in any ten-cent<lb />
s-tore. He wouldn't need a comb<lb />
because his hairs are becoming ex-<lb />
tinct. He wouldn't need any tooth-<lb />
paste because he can rinse his<lb />
false teeth out under a spigot. He<lb />
wouldn't lug along a camera be-<lb />
cause post cards are cheaper and<lb />
always burn out. He wouldn't take<lb />
along a hat because they're not<lb />
went in some parts of the world,<lb />
and the heck with the other parts<lb />
of the world because the people<lb />
there will never see him again any-<lb />
way.<lb />
You know, maybe it wouldn't be<lb />
isuch a good idea to teach tourists<lb />
how to pack a traveling bag.<lb />
Hodgenpodge bags provide an ex-<lb />
cellent excuse to purchase new<lb />
things, and we build good will<lb />
when we give away those things<lb />
we don't need on the trip. Perhaps<lb />
the receivers won't be able to use<lb />
these gifts either, but they're won-<lb />
derful for memories' sake. And<lb />
think of the conversation pieces we<lb />
have when we get back home, tell-<lb />
ing our friends of our well-travel-<lb />

worn purchases.<lb />

Pirate Grid Highlights<lb />
;av<lb />
By RICHARD BO YD<lb />
RICHMOND, VIRGINIALast Saturday night was a<lb />
typical September night in the Old Dominion capitol weather-<lb />
wise. As for a football contest played in Municipal Stadium<lb />
in the historic city of the South, it was a different story.<lb />
Richmond's Spiders, a team rated among the high-<lb />
in pre-season picks of the Southern Conference lead-<lb />
ers, were expecting a typical win over underdog EC.<lb />
When the gun sounded ending a high scoring encounter,<lb />
the Spiders had their win, but it was by far from typical.<lb />
The highly-favored Spiders found their first opponent<lb />
with what was probably one of the trickest offensive teams<lb />
that the men of Coach Ed Merrick will face all season.<lb />
Richmond beat EC 27-26. The Spiders, however, did<lb />
not defend effectively the 'new look" of Coach Stasavich's<lb />
initial crew here at Greenvilte. This "new look" was of<lb />
course, Stas's single-wing offense brought here by the highly-j dominated<lb />
successful mentor from Lenoir Rhyne.<lb />
Stas had spring practice and less than three summer<lb />
w?eeks to convert the Wing T players into the single-wing<lb />
style of play. The new mentor counted on promising Sopho-<lb />
mores to aid the adjustment. This host of Sophomores made<lb />
Stas look good Saturday night in the Virginia capitol. New<lb />
stars were born in Bill Cline, Jerry Tolley, and Bill Bailey.<lb />
Sophomores Larry Rudisill and Vince Eiduke starred as<lb />
Freshmen but continued their brilliant offensive tactics<lb />
against; Richmond. These five Sophomores played a "big"<lb />
hand in the Buc's Four touchdowns.<lb />
Cline's running, passing, and kicking dazzled the home<lb />
team most of the night contest. Tolley ran the second-half<lb />
kick-off for 80 yards and a touchdown, besides catching<lb />
several passes for 75 yards. Bailey was effective at full-<lb />
back and aided Cline on his pass to Bob Bumgardner for a<lb />
40-yard touchdown play. Rudisill and Eiduke teamed up to<lb />
accumulate a 6 pointer for the Pirates, when the former<lb />
took Eiduke's pass for a 2-yard touchdown. Eiduke was ef-<lb />
fective at tailback; and Rudisill, despite a leg injury, played<lb />
a fine game at wingback.<lb />
Cline's performance was so spectacular that sports<lb />
writers felt it was one of the "best" performances ever<lb />
exibited in the Richmond stadium. The Valdese native gained<lb />
over 200 yards on total offense and made more tackles than<lb />
anyone on the field Saturday night from his safety position.<lb />
Another Sophomore, Tom Michel, the team's leading<lb />
socrer as a freshman, ran effectively at fullback. Maurice<lb />
Allen did the signal-calling job as a veteran in his initial<lb />
start at the blocking-back post. Veterans David Smith, Earl<lb />
Sweet, and Bill Strickland starred defensively.<lb />
The performance of EC demonstrated five good points:<lb />
1EC can operate the single-wing effectively against<lb />
a good defense.<lb />
2-EC helped the school's chances considerably for SC<lb />
membership, thanks to the team's fine performance.<lb />
3The Pirate Sophomores showed signs of greatness.<lb />
u 4-Exhibiting a strong offensive team in the opener,<lb />
the Pirates should grow in strength, as Stas employed only<lb />
one-third of his offense. y<lb />
5If admitted to the SC, EC should hold its own in the<lb />
future in grid circles, with over 20 Sophomores on the ore-<lb />
sent team expected to materialize effectively.<lb />
Richmond Edges<lb />
EC 27-26<lb />
Ifi Grid Opener<lb />
Richmond's hig-hiy-iouted Spid-<lb />
ers edged EC 27-26 in the Rich-<lb />
mond City Stadium Saturday Blight.<lb />
Brat, the Spiders had to come from<lb />
! chind in the last quarter to con-<lb />
quer the single-win Bucs.<lb />
Coach 'Clarence Stasavich of the<lb />
Pirates released the new EC at-<lb />
tack at no mercy during an EC-<lb />
second period which<lb />
the visitors score 20 points.<lb />
This Pirate uprising was preceeded<lb />
by a 13Hoint effort by the Spiders<lb />
during the first quarter. EC's<lb />
Jerry Tolly from Edenton received<lb />
the second-half Richmond kickoff<lb />
on the Buc 20 and proceeded 80<lb />
yards for the final Buc score. Two<lb />
Richmond touchdowns and two<lb />
time Spider extra points midway<lb />
in the last half (proved to be vic-<lb />
torious for the Southern Confer-<lb />
ence eleven.<lb />
Cline Dominates Action<lb />
Sophomore Billy Cline from Val-<lb />
dese exhibited a great all-around<lb />
showing for the Bucs. The shifty<lb />
tailback scored a six-pointer with<lb />
'his team 13 points down during the<lb />
second period. After Earl Sweet's<lb />
conversion, Cline again marched<lb />
his team down the field for anoth-<lb />
er (potential score. Vince Eiduke,<lb />
Cline's worthy replacement passed<lb />
two yards to Larry Rudisill to tie<lb />
the encounter and Earl Sweet's ex-<lb />
tra point placement proved true<lb />
for a 14-13 EC lead.<lb />
Cline went to work again later<lb />
on in the period. Fullback Bill<lb />
Bailey passed to Cline on the side-<lb />
lines, and the Valdese flash fired<lb />
to Bob Buimgardner 40 yards away<lb />
' for another EC score. The kick<lb />
failed fey EC left at intermnssion<lb />
with a 20-13 advantage.<lb />
Cline's terrific defensive play<lb />
slowed down the Spiders offense<lb />
tremendously. Cline also did the<lb />
EC punting, intercepted one pass,<lb />
and almost broke away on a kickoff<lb />
by the Spiders for another score.<lb />

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER DOLLAR<lb />
With today's entry I begin my ninth year of writing<lb />
in your school newspaper for the makers of M urlb r .<lb />
Nine years, I believe you will agree, M a bog time I<lb />
it took only a little longer than nine year- to dig tin -<lb />
Canal, and you know what a gigantic undertaking that <lb />
To be sure, the work would have gone more rapidly had I<lb />
shovel been invented at that time, but. M we all know, I<lb />
shovel was not invented until lH4ti by Walter H. h of<lb />
Cleveland, Ohio. Before Mr. Shovel's discovery in I'M<lb />
digging was done with sugar tongs a method unquoti-<lb />
dainty but hardly what one would call rapid. There wer<lb />
rally, many efforts made to speed up digging before Mr. Sbxn i. -<lb />
breakthrough notably an attempt in 1912 by the immortal<lb />
Thomas Aha Edison to dig with the phonograph, but the only<lb />
thing that happened was that he got his horn full of sand. Thi.<lb />
so depressed Mr. Edison that he fell into a fit of melancholy<lb />
from which he did not emerge until two years later when his<lb />
friend William Wordsworth, the eminent nature poet, cheered<lb />
him up by imitating a duck for four and a half hours.<lb />
But I digress. For nine years, I say, I have been writing this<lb />
column for the makers of Marlboro Cigarettes, and far nine<lb />
years they have been paying me money. You are shocked 5<lb />
think that anyone who has tasted Marlloro's Bitparalh<lb />
flavor, who has enjoyed Marlboro's filter, who has revelled in<lb />
Marlboro's jolly red and white pack or box should be moo- tr<lb />
willing to write alout Marlboro without a jxmny's oompeo<lb />
tion. You are wrong.<lb />
Compensation is the very foundation stone of the An- r<lb />
Way of Life. Whether you love your work or hate it. our<lb />
absolutely requires that you be paid for it. For exam<lb />
have a friend named Rex ;ielx, i veterinarian by profe<lb />
who simply adores to worm dogs. I mean you can 11<lb />
