The SGA at its last regular<lb />
meeting, voted heavily in favor of<lb />
joining the National Student As-<lb />
sociation. The vote followed leng-<lb />
th debate during which Junior<lb />
Class President Bryan Bennett pre-<lb />
sented excerpts from a statement<lb />
of NSA policies. Mr. Bennett, who<lb />
presented the resolution to join the<lb />
NSA, also attempted to answer<lb />
charges made against N.SA by<lb />
various publications.<lb />
SGA President MaJlison read a<lb />
letter from President Jenkins urg-<lb />
ing tine Senate to give the pro-<lb />
posal much thought before de-<lb />
ciding either against or in favor<lb />
of it. In his letter, Dr. Jenkins<lb />
also made it clear tfhat the deci-<lb />
sion was entirely up to the stu-<lb />
dents. Jenkins recently spoke be-<lb />
fore a regional gathering of NSA<lb />
members and is scheduled to ad-<lb />
dress the national NSA atrfer-<lb />
ence later this year.<lb />
The vote, when finally taken<lb />
was as follows: 24 in favor of<lb />
joining; 3 against; 8 abstaining.<lb />
Mallison announced that we would<lb />
seek affiliation with NSA at once.<lb />
Also at Monday night's meeting,<lb />
three organizations requested ad-<lb />
ditional funds to complete their<lb />
year's work. These organizations<lb />
were the Playhouse, the Varsity<lb />
Rand, and the EAST CAROLINI-<lb />
AN.<lb />
The Playhouse had overspent on<lb />
the production, "The Wages of<lb />
Sin Ths was originally supjposed<lb />
to be a $100 workshop production<lb />
but the opportunity to present the<lb />
American premiere of "The Wages<lb />
of 'S&n" had seemed a worthwhile<lb />
project and the cost of this pro-<lb />
tection exceeded the original a I<lb />
location of $100.<lb />
The Varsity Band requested<lb />
money for uniform accessories,<lb />
transpoitatien, and a year's end<lb />
picnic.<lb />
The EAST CAROLINIAN re-<lb />
quested an appropriation in order<lb />
to complete the year's schedule of<lb />
papers. This shortage was a re-<lb />
sult of the switch earlier this year<lb />
to bi-weekly production.<lb />
All three organizations' re-<lb />
quests were granted.<lb />
Special events chairman Cathy<lb />
Shesso announced that awards day<lb />
would be held Thursday, May 17,<lb />
at ten o'clock.<lb />
Before adjourning the meeting<lb />
President Mallison announced that<lb />
he would honor no petition of let-<lb />

if a student wisihes to be heard he<lb />

Senate Member<lb />
Refutes Opinions<lb />
On 'Apathy'<lb />
To The Editor:<lb />
In the East Carolinian of May<lb />
4. 1962, .there appeared an article<lb />
from a misguided and "apathetic"<lb />
student who claims he and other<lb />
istudents have no opportunity to<lb />
voice his opinions. Perhaps if Mr.<lb />
Rehm had spent as much time in-<lb />
vestigating his subject matter as<lb />
he did in wording his 617 word<lb />
letter he would -have found his let-<lb />
ter unnecessary.<lb />
All students and faculty mem-<lb />
bers at ECC have the right to speak<lb />
before the Student Senate, the<lb />
governing body of the SGA. These<lb />
meetings are broadcast over camp-<lb />
us radio and television. Every<lb />
Parliamentary Procedure Briefing?<lb />
Constitution Changes<lb />
To Meet New Needs<lb />
Working with an inconsistent Constitution presents<lb />
numerous problems and little help for advancement in any<lb />
organization. Such is true of the EC SGA.<lb />
At present Ithe SGA Constitution is being changed as<lb />
the needs are met. Before the senate now are changes in-<lb />
volving sending committees, officers, and senators-at- tttt HJ<lb />
large. There are two numbers for senators in the present Bpnafi -- - -<lb />
constitutions, and when the new provisions are passed, the<lb />
number will be consistent throughout (13).<lb />
Someone should be awarded with an "idea-of-the-year"<lb />
medal for coming up with the requirement that senate<lb />
members pass a test on parliamentary procedure. Business<lb />
should be business and senate members should know how to<lb />
bring busness before a meeting. No doubt, meetings will<lb />
accomplish more if every senate member knows what is<lb />
happening without an explanation from the parliamentari-<lb />
an on each order of business. Taking time for such explana-<lb />
tions is boring and senseless. Senate members accept cer-<lb />
tain responsibilities when they take office and learning a<lb />
few pointers on parliamentary procedure is a part of this<lb />
responsibility. As the enrollment increases, the need for<lb />
efficient meetings becomes more important.<lb />
Senate members will be required to "prove their know-<lb />
ledge and comprehension- of the SGA Constitution Of<lb />
personal desire, senate members should familiarize them-<lb />
selves with the constitution.<lb />
Perhaps because new officers have just been installed<lb />
or perhaps because EC students are becoming unapathetic<lb />
a great deal of interest has recently been focused on the SGA<lb />
and its activities.<lb />
Wow! We finally got a letter from a student. J u be<lb />

EC Enters Radio<lb />
Show Competition<lb />
The need of an active advisor to help handle SGA<lb />
requisitions and apportionment of funds was pointed out<lb />
at the last SGA meeting. Something must be done to keen<lb />
SGA supported organizations from spending money thev<lb />
do not have and then presenting a formal request before<lb />
the senate stating that they have bills and must pay them<lb />
As the college and its organizations grow, this problem will<lb />
become even greater and with the help of an advisor, this<lb />
practice can be eliminated. With fttie SGA reserve as low as<lb />
it is, let s hope the spending, then asking, ceases.<lb />

Past Pirate Nine<lb />
To Gain Victory<lb />
Wake Forest barely escaped the<lb />
clutches of EC's Pirates as they<lb />
took their 12-11 victory and breath-<lb />
ed a sigh of relief. EC won against<lb />
Wake Forest earlier in the season<lb />
by a score of 10-9.<lb />
Lacy West belted a grand-fclam<lb />
bome run in the second inaiafng, and<lb />
Wake's Bob Worrell also connected<lb />
with one for a 4-run slam in the<lb />
sixth.<lb />
Wake scored five times in the<lb />
first, and EC bounced back in<lb />
the second with five, greatly aided<lb />
by West's clout, le Deacs scored<lb />
three more in the second to fro in<lb />
front by a score of 8-5.<lb />
The Bucs tallied in the fifth and<lb />
t;ed it in the sixth when Spencer<lb />
Gaylord and Garlton Barnes slap-<lb />
ped doubles one behind the other<lb />
to score two more runs.<lb />
Then the Deacons came back<lb />
with two walks and a hit batter<lb />
to load the bases. Bob Worrell step-<lb />
ped up and crushed one to center<lb />
that took a higih bounce over Bob-<lb />
by Joyce's head and rolled to the<lb />
fence for an inside-the-paxk grand<lb />
slam.<lb />
There being no action in the<lb />
seventh inning, EC came 'back in<lb />
the eighth. We scored after the<lb />
bases were loaded on walks by<lb />
Pardue and then a fourth walk<lb />
by relief pitcher Don Roth. Char-<lb />
lie Johnson stepped up and singled<lb />
to drive in two more runs to make<lb />
it 12-11. Mandy relieved Roth and<lb />
retired Joyce and .pinch hitter Art<lb />
Henretta for the last two outs of<lb />
the inning. In the ninth, Mandy<lb />
retired two of the Buc's three outs<lb />
on strike-outs.<lb />
Carlton Barnes, a freshman from Wilson, N leads the t<lb />
tingover .500, RSI's, singles, and doubles. Barnes, shortstop1<lb />
