We need not mention the importance of electing- quali-<lb />
fied class officers. They represent us directly on the Senate<lb />
and vote on how our money is to be spent. Perhaps the class<lb />
officers appear to have little or no control in the SGA, but<lb />
it's a job that can be made greater by the person elected.<lb />
The top Senate officers have been installed and now to<lb />
have good government we need active class leaders to keep<lb />
the others in line. Dr. Jenkins commented at the SGA Banquet<lb />
that our SGA is known throughout the statte as an effective<lb />
organization and that a tremendous responsibility lies in<lb />
the hands of our student government to see that this past<lb />
year's work will be a basis for next year's accomplishments.<lb />
Often it's the person behind the leaders who work for<lb />
our benefit and make the accomplishments. Why not elect<lb />
someone we can depend on fto see that our wishes are at<lb />
least considered. With the apparent growth in EC many<lb />
issues will come before the Senate next year that will require<lb />
forethought and judgment. Every vote will be an important<lb />
vote.<lb />

Are We Really Unhappy, Bored? .<lb />
Complaining Can Become Habit<lb />
Did you hear about the Big Man On Campus who froze<lb />
to death in class last week because we had a few chilly days<lb />
and the heat in the buildings was not turned up sufficiently<lb />
to provide a seventy-five degree temperature?<lb />
Of course he told us he was cold he told everyone how<lb />
cold he was and how far he had to walk from his car to the<lb />
building and he also mentioned the fact that it was raining<lb />
outside and as a result his feet were not only cold, but wet.<lb />
Have we been seeking sympathy or have we become a<lb />
complaining generation? It's either too early to get up for<lb />
an 8 o'clock class or it's too late in the afternoon to have a<lb />
2 o'clock class. If we have a quiz, we're upset and if we don't<lb />
have a quiz the material is too much to have on one big<lb />
quiz. If it's raining, it's a fine day for sleeping. If the sun<lb />
is shining we don't want to go to class since it's too nice to<lb />
sit in a stuffy room. If the professor lectures, we become<lb />
bored. If the professor asks us to write, we wonder why he<lb />
makes us work so hard in class. We wonder whv we don't<lb />
seem to be learning anything and in the same breath ask why<lb />
weekends are so short and weeks so long. If we are in extra-<lb />
curricular activities we complain about how time consuming<lb />
they are, but if we have no outside activity, we are bored.<lb />
Has complaining only become a habit or are we really<lb />
uncomfortable, unhappy, and bored all the time? Oh, well,<lb />
it's a thought, but if we think too long on the subject we may<lb />
become (tired and unable to concentrate on writing home.<lb />

According to Webster's standard<lb />
dictionary, the word gratified is<lb />
defined as: "to give or be a source<lb />
of pleasure or satisfaction<lb />
In short it all adds up to one<lb />
.simple word that conveys so much<lb />
meaning, pleased, p-1-e-a-s-e-d. And<lb />
that is exactly how we feel to learn<lb />
from unimpeachable authority that<lb />
Dr. Leo Jenkins will remain on as<lb />
President of East Carolina Col-<lb />
lege.<lb />
Dr. Jenkins is a big man. Not<lb />
only have the faculty and students<lb />
of ECC discovered it, but it is also<lb />
clearly recognized by folks all<lb />
over the state who are concerned<lb />
v ith and interested in East Caro-<lb />
lina College. And obviously, it is<lb />
recognized beyond the north state<lb />
itself.<lb />
Yes, Dr. Jenkins is a bij man<lb />
and East Carolina College is a<lb />
big college. We like to think they<lb />
both need each other and that the<lb />
relationship will stay tightly weld-<lb />
ed for a long, long time.<lb />
We are all proud of East Caro-<lb />
lina College and are zealous of its<lb />
best interests. We have high hopes<lb />
for its future and feel confident<lb />
that with the splendid strides it<lb />
has made under the aegris of Dr.<lb />
Messick and now Dr. Jenkins, ECC<lb />
ill be moving up to still greater<lb />
heights in its academic standing<lb />
and recognition, as well as becom-<lb />

Yes. we are gratafied to have<lb />
Dr. Leo Jenkins at the helm of the<lb />
local institution, and wish for him<lb />
continued success and happiness<lb />
in his role as President of East<lb />

CRAM COURSE NO. 2: BIOLOGY<lb />
The grisly shadow of final exams looms over us, so today in<lb />
this column instead of merry quips and homely saws, you will<lb />
find hard factsquick cram courses to help you through the<lb />
ordeal ahead.<lb />
Last week I gave you a rapid survey of Modem European<lb />
History. Now let us turn to Biology.<lb />
Biology is divided into several phyla, or classes. First is<lb />
the protozoa, or one-celled animal. AM life stems from the one-<lb />
celled animal. Over a space of millions of years, life slowly<lb />
evolved until today we have animals with as many as 12 cells.<lb />
Some larger mammals claim they have 14 to 16 cells, but you<lb />
know how larger mammals lie.<lb />
The second class of animals is the peripheraa shadowy<lb />
category that borders often on the vegetable. Take, for example,<lb />
the sponge. The sponge is definitely an animal. The washcloth,<lb />
on the other hand, is definitely not.<lb />
Next we come to the arthropoda. or insects. Most people,<lb />
of course, find insects fairly repulsiveand yet, if one will but<lb />
look, there is exquisite beauty in the insect world. Who does<lb />
not remember the lovely insect poems of William Cullen<lb />
Sigafoossuch enchanting lyrics as Tumbling Along with the<lb />
Tumbling Tumblebug, Fly Gently, Street Aphid, and Gnats My<lb />
Mother Taught Me. Mr. Sigafoos has been inactive since the<lb />
invention of DDT.<lb />
Our next category is the molluscalobsters, shrimp, and<lb />
the like. Lobsters are generally found under rocky projections<lb />
on the ocean bottom. Shrimp are generally found in a circle<lb />
around a small bowl containing cocktail sauce. Marlboro Cig-<lb />
arettes are generally found at any tobacco counter or vending<lb />
machine.<lb />
What have Marlboro Cigarettes got to do with biology?<lb />
Well, actually, not very much. It must be remembered, how-<lb />
ever, that the makers of Marlboro pay me for writing this<lb />
column, and they are inclined to get surly if I fail to mention<lb />
their product.<lb />
Mind you, I enjoy singing the praises of Marlboroand<lb />
so will you once you try that flavorful tobacco, that fine filter<lb />
which lets the flavor come through undiminished. It is a great<lb />
pleasure to smoke Marlboros and a great pleasure to write<lb />
about them, but sometimes, I must confess, I find it a bit<lb />
difficult to work the commercial into the column. Some years<lb />
ago, for example, I did a piece about Alexander the Great,<lb />
and, believe you me, it took a heap of stretching to drop in<lb />
a plug for Marlboro. The way I finally managed it was to have<lb />
Alexander go to the Oracle at Delphi and say, "Oracle, I have<lb />
conquered the world and tasted all its pleasures, but somehow<lb />
I am not content. I know that somewhere there must be a<lb />
joy I have not yet experienced To which the Oracle replied,<lb />
3<lb />
"Yes, Alexander, there is such a joy, but, alas, the time is not<lb />
yet. I refer to Marlboro Cigarettes which will not be invented<lb />
for another 2500 years Whereupon Alexander fell into a sulk<lb />
from which he never recovered . . . Well sir, there is no question<lb />
I sold a lot of cigarettes with this ingenious commercial, but<lb />
the gang down at the American Academy of Arts and Letters<lb />
gave me a mighty good razzing, you may be sure.<lb />
But I digress. Back to biology, and the most advanced<lb />
phylum of allthe chordata, or vertebrates. There are two<lb />
kinds of vertebratesthose whose backbones run horizontally<lb />
and those whose backbones run vertically. Generally, there is<lb />
no great difficulty in distinguishing the two varieties. A fish,<lb />
for instance, has a horizontal backbone, and a man has a vertical<lb />
backbone. Occasionally, however, you run into a problemlike<lb />
a fish who swims upright and a man who spends most of his<lb />
time in the sack. How, in such a case, do you tell one from<lb />
another? Science struggled with this sticky question for cen-<lb />
turies, but finally Sigai'oos of M.i.T. came up with a brilliantly<lb />
simple answer. Offer the creature a Marlboro. If it is a fish, it will<lb />
refuse. If it is Homo sapiens, it will accept. In fact, the more<lb />
sapient, the quicker the acceptance. c 1M2 m shaiM<lb />

The maker of Marlboro, upright vertebrate all, remind<lb />
you that their fine cigarette are available in pack or box<lb />
wherever cigarette are moid in any of the 50 tate.<lb /><pb facs="00038750_tn_0006" /><lb />
