Little Teacher's College<lb />
Ti<lb />
Is Pri<lb />
ravels rnmrose<lb />
Path<lb />
East Carolina College will have more athletic scholar-<lb />
ships than the Carolinas Conference permits. In explaining<lb />
that sltand, ECC President Dr. Leo W. Jenkins said: "We feel<lb />
we are not over-emphasizing our athletic program, but mere-<lb />
ly trying to get where we belong in view of our size and plans<lb />
for the future'<lb />
Well, it would be entirely in order to wish Dr. Jenkins<lb />
well in his trip down the palth to athletic greatness, a point<lb />
which he describes as where ECC belongs in view of its size<lb />
and plans for the future. It would be well to hope for him,<lb />
too, that he has a real chart of the various submerged reefs,<lb />
and other hazards to educational navigation which are known<lb />
to lurk along the path to athletic greatness.<lb />
Some heads of other colleges which ha)ve happily sniff-<lb />
ed the primroses down such paths could tell him that emphas-<lb />
is can get out of hand a lot easier than it can be brought<lb />
back under control. They could tell him that it would be a<lb />
lot easier to go easy on emphasis than it would be to have<lb />
to suddenly do a lot of de-emphasizing.<lb />
Dr. Jenkins and East Carolina may wind up on the<lb />
top of the athletic heap without any trouble and without<lb />
any of the heartaches and heartbreaks which have beset some<lb />
others who set out with athletic greatness in mind. Let's<lb />
hope so.The Raleigh Times<lb />
Such bitter-sweet words as appeared in the foregoing<lb />
editorial in the Raleigh Times, following EC's withdrawal<lb />
from the Carolinas Conference, were surely anticipated. And<lb />
as surely as they were anticipated . . . they appeared . . .<lb />
without failure.<lb />
The same attitude was expressed towards EC as has<lb />
been expressed time and time again on any move EC has<lb />
made, athletic or otherwise. This same attitude still appears<lb />
in the writings in Raleigh newspapers . . . columns and edi-<lb />
torials written by men who probably haven't seen the camp-<lb />
us and its expansion in years, and who probably couldn't<lb />
tell you the present enrollment, and who still think of East<lb />
Carolina as the little teacher's college in Greenville<lb />
isolated from other educational institutions in the state.<lb />
Perhaps the schools, which everyone knows are "grand-<lb />
ly" backed by Raleigh papers, are receiving more competi-<lb />
tion from EC for the better high school students entering<lb />
college than ever before. Of course, the emergence of new<lb />
competition is a situation to be ill-received in some cases.<lb />
Why else the "bitter-sweet" words and attitude? Cer-<lb />
tainly, there is no fear of EC horning in where athletics is<lb />
concerned. We're not headed for the Atlantic Coast Con-<lb />
ference.<lb />
This time it happened to be withdrawal from the Caro-<lb />
linas Conference. Surely, with our present number of foot-<lb />
ball scholarships, 38, complications unending would have set<lb />
in if we had agreed to the limitations set by the Carolinas<lb />
Conference 22 football scholarships.<lb />
East Carolina withdrew from the conference as clearly<lb />
stated . . . "because it could not effectly operate its grant-<lb />
m-aid program under limitations set by the Carolinas Con-<lb />
ference<lb />
We hated to even bring it up, but prejudices such as<lb />
these will continue to be expressed and we hope rebuffed by<lb />
EC students and supporters.<lb />

While premarital sex is socially<lb />
prohibited in our culture, since it<lb />
is in conflict with established soc-<lb />

existence. The fact that a phenom-<lb />

unjust criticism. The article has.<lb />
in our opinion, been unjustly criti-<lb />

The group of student-tourists<lb />

THE TRUE AND TRAGICAL TALE OF<lb />
HAPPY JACK SIGAFOOS<lb />
Who would have thought that Happy Jack Sigafoos, the boy<lb />
the sky never rained on, would teeter on the edge of a life of crime?<lb />
Certainly there was no sign of it in his boyhood. His home<lb />
life was tranquil and uplifting. His mother was a nice fat lady<lb />
who hummed a lot and gave baskets to the poor. His father<lb />
was a respected citizen who could imitate more than 400 bird<lb />
calls and once saved an elderly widow from drowning in his<lb />
good suit. (That is, Mr. Sigafoos was in his good suit; the<lb />
elderly widow was in swimming trunks.) Happy Jack's life<lb />
was nothing short of idyllictill he went off to college.<lb />
Here Happy Jack quickly became a typical freshman-<lb />
tweedy, seedy, and needy. He learned the joys of rounding out<lb />
his personality, and he learned the cost. His" allowance vanished<lb />
like dew before the morning sun. There were times, it grieves<lb />
me to report, when he didn't even have enough money for a<lb />
pack of Marlboro Cigarettesand you know how miserable<lb />
that can be! To be deprived of Marlboro's matchless flavor, its<lb />
easy-drawing filter, its subtly blended tastiness, its refreshing<lb />
mildness, its ineffable excellence, its soft pack or flip-top box-<lb />
why, it is a prospect to break the heart in twain!<lb />
Marlboro-less and miserable, Happy Jack tried to get more<lb />
money from home. He wrote long, impassioned letters, pointing<lb />
out that the modern, large-capacity girl simply could not be<lb />
courted on his meager allowance. But all Jack got back from<lb /><lb />
jf <lb />
k 9Mpllfr$wtk (aiMauMi 'UimrdlfoxMC I<lb />
home were tiresome homilies about thrift and prudence.<lb />
Then one dark day a sinister sophomore came up to Jack<lb />
and said, "For one dollar I will sell you a list of fiendishly clever<lb />
lies to tell your father when you need some extra money<lb />
He gave Jack the list of fiendishly clever lies. Jack read:<lb />
. 1. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to buy a new<lb />
house for the Dean of Men.<lb />
2. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to buy a head-<lb />
stone for Rover, our late beloved dormitory watchdog.<lb />
3. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to endow a chair<lb />
of Etruscan Art.<lb />
4. A bunch of us fellows are getting together to build our<lb />
own particle accelerator.<lb />
For a moment poor Jack was tempted; surely his father could<lb />
not but support all these laudable causes. Then Jack's good<lb />
upbringing came to the fore. He turned to the sinister sopho-<lb />
more and said, "No, thank you. I could not deceive my aged<lb />
parent so. And as for you, sir, I can only sayfie<lb />
Upon hearing this the sinister sophomore broke into a huge<lb />
grin. He whipped off his black hat and pasty faceand who<lb />
do you think it was? None other than Mr. Sigafoos, Happy<lb />
Jack's father, that's wlio!<lb />
"Good lad cried Mr. Sigafoos. "You have passed your<lb />
test brilliantly With that he gave Happy Jack a half million<lb />
dollars in small bills and a red convertible containing power<lb />
steering and four nubile maidens.<lb />

Thursday afternoon.<lb />
In addition to these two victor-<lb />

After three weeks on the road.<lb />
Coach Earl Smith's five return to<lb />

The Bucs hit the road again Sat-<lb />
urday night when they journey to<lb />
Meisenheimer to take on the Pfeif-<lb />

In last Tuesday's EAST<lb />
