The Executive Council of the SGA<lb />
recently passed a motion that there<lb />
be a complete new election in Rags-<lb />
dale Hall for the offices of Presi-<lb />
dent and Vice President only.<lb />
This decision is the result of an<lb />
incident involving two girls who had<lb />
been nominated for these offices.<lb />
They were asked to withdraw on<lb />
the basis that they did not have clear<lb />
Student Government records. Their<lb />
records were, however, clear with the<lb />
exception of demerits received last<lb />
year. One of the (prospective nomi-<lb />
nees accepted the withdrawal, but the<lb />
other one contested. Regardless, her<lb />
name was still withdrawn, and she<lb />
was not. allowed to run for office. She<lb />
then proceeded to submit her argu-<lb />
o ent to the Executive Council of the<lb />
SGA.<lb />
A statement was also issued from<lb />
the Executive Council stating that<lb />
neither -his election incident nor any-<lb />
thing pertaining to it be placed on<lb />
he records of the two girls who<lb />
.ere withdrawn from the election.<lb />
The Executive Council feels that<lb />
these girls were justified in coming<lb />
to the Student Government Associa-<lb />
tion with this incident and were un-<lb />

Special Edition Brings Tremendous Response<lb />
Contributors Extended Thank:<lb />
Special thanks and appreciation are ex-<lb />
tended to those who contributed to the special<lb />
edition of the East Carolinian which appeared<lb />
on campus Monday night. Never have we<lb />
received such cooperation on any project un-<lb />
dertaken.<lb />
Those who were contacted to write ar-<lb />
ticles for the edition answered with an over-<lb />
whelming response. Out of the sixteen peo-<lb />
ple who were requested to submit articles<lb />
within two or three days, fifteen responded.<lb />
Only one person was unable to carry out an<lb />
assignment due to the time element involved.<lb />
We feel this to be a genuine show of the<lb />
interested and concern for the Bond Issue<lb />
present on campus. Moreover, it exemplifies<lb />
what can be accomplished, through coopera-<lb />
tion, in a number of directions.<lb />
We are pleased with the reception re-<lb />
ceived in the dormitories; counselors and stu-<lb />
dents alike did a marvelous job in aiding these<lb />
papers to reach their destination.<lb />
New Size<lb />
This size East Carolinian, 5 columns by<lb />
16 inches, is the proposed size for the twice<lb />
weekly planned for Winter Quarter. Al-<lb />
though the plans re still tentative, we wel-<lb />
come student opinion en the smaller paper.<lb />
We would like to know if students feel they<lb />
will benefit from receiving the news twice<lb />
a week instead of once.<lb />
Present plans call for an edition each<lb />
Tuesday afternoon and Friday noon. The lat-<lb />
ter will reach students leaving for the week-<lb />
end before they depart.<lb />
The East Carolinian staff feels that news<lb />
stories will be more current . . . really news,<lb />
not just reports of events occurring six or<lb />
seven days before publication. Articles per-<lb />
taining to events of the week<lb />
students on Tuesday, instead<lb />
thus, avoiding the possibility<lb />
over the weekend events of<lb />
week.<lb />
Friday's edition will more or less carry<lb />
news of the weekend through Tuesday of the<lb />
will reach the<lb />
of Thursday;<lb />
forgetting<lb />
upcoming<lb />
of<lb />
the<lb />
next week; and will be a review of the week's<lb />
'ictivities<lb />
Bulletin board-type news and club news<lb />
will be reduced to a minimum with emphasis<lb />
on campus wide events and feature articles.<lb />
After seeing the special edition, students<lb />
now know what to expect next quarter. What<lb />

Lovely Wright Circle the center for<lb />
pool-gating, romancing, starry-eyed lovers,<lb />

A breath taking and exotic picture, we<lb />
can imagine. However, we have to overlook<lb />
the paper cups and debris thrown down by<lb />
careless figures in the scene. In spite of ef-<lb />
forts to see the beauty . . .there is something<lb />
to be said and done about trash-casting stu-<lb />
dents.<lb />
Trash cans were placed in the Circle for<lb />
our use. It has been brought to our attention<lb />
that we are not using them. Also, we allow<lb />
pranks, from filling the pool with soap suds<lb />
or bubble bath to tampering with the float,<lb />
causing an overflow in the pool. We allow<lb />
a few students to walk around the pool, dam-<lb />
aging the grass. PLEASE KEEP OFF THE<lb />

We even have a case of students mali-<lb />

and notebooks by sending them to the bottom<lb />
of the pool.<lb />
A student or students broke a couple<lb />
of the colored disks while splashing around<lb />
in the small pool.<lb />
With a few students in our society pull-<lb />

presentations of two foreign films last week;<lb />
the fine Greek motion picture, 'Never on Sun-<lb />
day' and the interesting. French film 'Breath-<lb />
less We extend our appreciation to the man-<lb />
agements of the Pitt and State Theatres,<lb />
respectively.<lb />
Student response to these films and the<lb />
Italian motion picture 'La Dolce Vita' has<lb />
prompted the exploration of a foreign film<lb />
series on campus. We will keep you informed<lb />
on the progress of this program. Should you<lb />
have any suggestions; Dr. Pasti, Dr. Rives<lb />
and Mrs. Perry would welcome them.<lb />
Homer And Tuttie<lb />
Most of us were intriqued by Homer<lb />
the American Homer in 'Never on Sunday<lb />
the do-gooder, who could not forgive the<lb />
Greeks for forsaking the wisdom of Aristotle<lb />
and the ancient glory of Athens.<lb />
Our Homer has a brother, Tutankhaman.<lb />
Their father's love of Greece, B. C. was pa-<lb />
ralled by their mother's love of Egypt, B. C.<lb />
Well. Tutankhaman (Tuttie, for short)<lb />
was a good son and. like his mother, could<lb />
never quite forgive the Egyptians for discon-<lb />
tinuing the construction of pyramidsor the<lb />
Hebrews for breaking the Ten Command-<lb />
ments (the tablets, of course). In fact, Tuttie<lb />
believed that every Jew has a golden calf<lb />
stored in his safety deposit box, so one can<lb />
readily see that his impressions are not en-<lb />
tirely to be trusted.<lb />
However. Tuttie became involved in a<lb />
tale worth repeating. Around eight years ago,<lb />
he became a United States diplomat to the<lb />
Near East. He frequently fancied, aloud, that<lb />
he was assigned to assuage the lot of infidels.<lb />
Notice that Tuttie was a diplomat, because<lb />
in the recent change from the old to the new,<lb />
he was replaced by the Peace Corps.<lb />
Tiittie's Diplomacy<lb />
Tuttie arrived on his job one day at noon<lb />
and when he saw the Arabs prostrate before<lb />
him, misinterpreted.<lb />
Tuttie. a diplomat of the old school, did<lb />
not reach for a post card, but set about to<lb />
take positive action.<lb />
He immediately hopped in a Cadillac,<lb />
went to his Uncle's oil company and consulted<lb />
with experts. Together, they concluded that<lb />
what the natives needed was a good Amer-<lb />
ican diet to correct their posture and a good,<lb />
stiff drink of democracy to uplift their<lb />
thoughts.<lb />
Tuttie was amazed at how simple his<lb />
mission would be. He drew up a program, had<lb />
it approved by his uncle, and the Shot-Und<lb />
presented it to the 'eager' Arabs like this:<lb />
(Confidently) "Welcome to my suite<lb />
friends. Let me assure you that it is a pleas-<lb />
ure to be here (chuckle). My government,<lb />
the United States - yes, the good ole<lb />
u. S has authorized me to make you<lb />
most magnificient offer. (Proudly)<lb />
are prepared to present you with<lb />
boatload of HAMBURGERS' Not<lb />
Id soggy surplus hamburgers, but new ham-<lb />
burgers, well donecooked to a crisp! (pause<lb />
GARDNER<lb />
uberently) there will be coca-colas for every-<lb />
body ! (no wild cheer) and with each coke,<lb />
you will receive a straw! (disturbed) You<lb />
know, a strawmint flavored, plastic, flex-<lb />
ible plastic. (Astounded) No, Hasham not<lb />
THAT kind of straw7! These are drinking<lb />
sraws. Each of these amazing little straws<lb />
is guaranteed for the duration of 1,000 cokes.<lb />
And after drinking 500 cakes, if you have<lb />
learned to use your straw well, you can trade<lb />
the empty bottles back for 500 more cokes.<lb />
'That is how our program works. You<lb />
will be rehabilitated, back on your feet.<lb />
Soviet-Sino<lb />
"What? (perplexed) The straws can be<lb />
traded to Russia? (demanding) FOR WHAT?<lb />
(puzzled) a coca-cola dam? (anxiety) a down-<lb />
payment on a coca-cola dam? (amazed) Rus-<lb />
sia will give the straws to China? (distressed)<lb />
China is experimenting with the possibility<lb />
of nuclear fisson in plastic? (corrected) Oh,<lb />
mint-flavored, flexible plastic.<lb />
Confused) 1 really don't understand.<lb />
Don't you want our hamburgers with mustard,<lb />
our jelly-rolls, our pop corn, and coca-colas<lb />
with strawsmint-flavored plastic, flexible<lb />
plastic straws? You accept! (elated) MAR-<lb />
VELOUS!<lb />
"Why yes, I suppose you can have the<lb />
dam. (So happy that he is simply out of his<lb />
mind) You will invite ME for a swim? (re-<lb />
served) In the cool, syrupy, carbonated coke?<lb />
(distrubed, again) But what about the straws?<lb />
(bewildered) China will give them back?<lb />
(abashed) Like Japan did the iron? But that<lb />
is not very moral! (confounded) 'It would<lb />
make them happy?<lb />
"It is all very confusing<lb />
As you can see, Tuttie as a diplomat,<lb />
like Homer as a tourist, had his misunder-<lb />
standings. However, we now have the Peace<lb />
Corps.<lb />
What's that? Maybe we should try pray-<lb />

Down through history man has come<lb />

Is there a weaker sexTodass<lb />
women, the so-called weaker sex, can<lb />
now give man a substantial argu-<lb />
ment in their own favor.<lb />
The average American working<lb />
woman earns $2,667.57 a year. This<lb />
act in itself is an indication of the<lb />
.tbility of a woman. Over one-third<lb />
of the total labor force in the United<lb />
States is composed of women and<lb />
over one-half of them are married.<lb />
Four million of these young ladies<lb />
are recipients of college degrees, and<lb />
these four million women make up<lb />
over one-third of the country's col-<lb />
lege graduates.<lb />
Statistics show that the average<lb />
woman at twenty-six and one-half<lb />
(26 years of age is married and<lb />
has two or three children. Statistics<lb />
prove that women pay 40 per cent of<lb />
all property taxes, hold more than<lb />
40 per cent of all home titles, influ-<lb />
ence 85 percent of all consumer buy-<lb />
ing, and own 65 per cent of all mu-<lb />
tual savings accounts.<lb />
In the (pre-Civil War days, it was<lb />
indeed rare for a woman to receive<lb />
a pay check. A woman's only excuse<lb />
for working was extreme poverty.<lb />
During the Civil War, while the men<lb />
were fighting on the battle field,<lb />
ladies took their pieces in factories,<lb />
offices, schools, and hospitals. Al-<lb />
though they were sent home at the<lb />
end of the war to keep house and<lb />
tend to children, they didn't stay long.<lb />
The demand for women workers<lb />
grew and by the early 1900'g men<lb />
had to accept not only as workers<lb />
but also as drivers, smokers, voters,<lb />
politicians, and even athletes. In ad-<lb />
dition to being physically fit for<lb />
athletics, statistics indicate that wo-<lb />
men live longer than men, that wo-<lb />
men have a much better chance of re-<lb />
sisting disease, that they are more<lb />
skulled at operations requiring fin-<lb />
ger-dexterity, and that they have<lb />

part-time jobs. Because of their<lb />

Why vote? This question is asked<lb />
by many during the regular voting<lb />
weeks. However, voting is a very<lb />
important step in enhancing campus<lb />
Kpirit. Recently during the fresh-<lb />
men elections, a very small minority<lb />
turned out at the polls. Why, you<lb />
ak. Well, one reason stems from<lb />
the lack of enthusiasm on the candi-<lb />
dates' pan, while still another rea-<lb />
son is the laziness of the students.<lb />
Wrhen elections are over what is<lb />
being done to increase class partic-<lb />
ipation, Class meetings have iot re-<lb />
ceived the proper support; therefore,<lb />
it is almost an impossibility to plan<lb />
a successful class sponsored function.<lb />
At a recent S. G. A. meeting much<lb />
discussion was exchanged regarding<lb />
class meetings. New ideas are form-<lb />
ing as each week passes, and these<lb />
ideas are directly related to enhanc-<lb />
ing: individual class spirit.<lb />

REVIEW<lb />
By RICHARD BOYD<lb />
HICKORY, N. CSaturday was a perfect night for foot-<lb />
ball in Hickory, the home of the defending National Champion<lb />
Lenoir Rhynes Bears But the Bears had met .their foe in Ohio<lb />
earlier in the day. Saturday night's encounter was also the<lb />
most important conference tilt of the season to EC with Appa-<lb />
lachian playing host to our EAST CAROLINA PIRATES.<lb />
The winner in this one is the co-favorite with LR for the<lb />
conference crown. After five fumbles, 90 yards lost in penalties<lb />
bv the Bucs, and two pass interceptions, the Apps claimed a<lb />
most-fortunate 16-14 verdict over a "fighting" EC team. The<lb />
majority of our mistakes occurred in the first half of the action<lb />
and the home team cashed in on two of the miscues and nine<lb />
points read on the scoreboard. A first quarter field goal and a<lb />
late second period touchdown gave the Mountaineers their tallies.<lb />
Pirates In Fine Comeback Bid<lb />
But the Apps found their competitors a different team<lb />
during the final 30 minutes of action. Dan Rouse fired two touch-<lb />
down passes, and Vine Eiduge scored 2 points on a run, giving<lb />
the Bucs their 14. Rouse was amazing during the final half of<lb />
action. The Newport News, Virginia native completed only 1<lb />
out of 5 for minus 5 yards during the initial half of action. Dur-<lb />
ing the remainder of the hard hitting contest, the Southpaw<lb />
Junior field general completed seven out of ten passes for 135<lb />
yards. Dan hit Tom Matthews on a 30 yard touchdown play in<lb />
the third quarter and Larry Rudisill on a 40 yard pass play dur-<lb />
ing the final quarter.<lb />
Possible Tie Between Apps And Bears<lb />
If LR defeats East Carolina this week the race will be<lb />
a tie between Lenoir Rhyne and Appalachian. However, a Pirate<lb />
victory will all but assure the Mountaineers the crown. Appa-<lb />
lachian is to meet winless Guilford this weekend, and the Apps<lb />
are expected to breeze past the Quakers.<lb />
Boonemen Looking Forward To LR Contest<lb />
Coach Jack Boone and company have been looking for-<lb />
ward to this one with the Bears for quite some time. Although<lb />
the Pirates are still not completely out of the race for the con-<lb />
ference crown, the set-up js not as dynamic as it would be had<lb />
the Bucs been able to defeat Appalachian last week.<lb />
Standing In Conference Still Tight<lb />
A victory for the Pirates in the contest with the Apps<lb />
would have given the EC team a commanding lead in the stand-<lb />
ings. However, now EC is 4-2, the APPS are 4-1, and the Bears<lb />
are 3-1. Newberry is still in the torrid race writh a 2-1 record.<lb />
IF East Carolina can upset LR this week and Appalachian should<lb />
lose then East Carolina would again lead the well-balanced league.<lb />
EC vs. LR WiU Be Thriller<lb />
Anyone that knows anything concerning East Carolina's<lb />
1961 grid Pirates realizes the Bucs have been waiting for this<lb />
"BIG ONE" all season. The EC eleven realizes that the Hickory<lb />
school is out to defend their national championship. To remain<lb />
in contention for such honors the Bears will have to beat East<lb />
Carolina. The Bucs also know that they lost a 24-23 heartbreaker<lb />
the last time the two teams met in College Stadium.<lb />
There are many EC performers who performed for this<lb />
season's eleven who played in that muddy contest two years ago<lb />
this month. Since then the Pirates have replaced the Glenn Bass,<lb />
James Speight type of running offense with a multiple offense<lb />
attack lead by many fine young backs, and accurate throwing<lb />
quarterback Dan Rouse. This is also a ft op defensive team in which<lb />
Coach Boone can throw at the "mighty Bears<lb />
Lenoir Rhyne will have to contend with the same Tommy<lb />
Matthews and Billy Strickland who performed against them two<lb />
seasons back. Tommy was a rising Sophomore at this particular<lb />
time and Bill was a 165 pound Freshman who was just converted<lb />
from guard to fullback by the EC coaching staff.<lb />
This season Matthews is the second leading ground gainer<lb />
in the conference with 388 yards to his credit, and Strickland is<lb />
a 195 pound fullback who is averaging close to five yards per<lb />
carry. The latter has added close to 30 pounds to his frame dur-<lb />
ing the past season and has been nothing but a "bull" in the<lb />
enemy line during that time.<lb />
The Bears will once again see Nick Hilgert, Clayton Pi-<lb />
land. Chuck Gordon, and several other top-noth EC performers<lb />
who almost upset the LR eleven in 59. Hilgert is an all-conference<lb />
prcspect. while Gordon and Piland are little All-American can-<lb />
didates on the '61 Pirate ssuad.<lb />
Lenoir Rhyne is fresh from a 34-14 thumping of Witten-<lb />
burg, Ohio. The Bears need the win over EC badly. But East<lb />
Carolina is coming into their own. Dan Rouse has been hitting<lb />
Richard Honeycutt, a sensational Sophmore end with accuracy.<lb />
Coach Boone's backs continue to run hard, and the Pirate de<lb />
fense can hold its own with Piland and Gordon around.<lb />
IF the Pirates do not fumble consistently and halve a bad<lb />
night by the way of penalties, East Carolina will upset the favored<lb />
Bears. In seeing the Pirates through seven rugged contest, the<lb />
Bucs look like the team to knock the Bears to their feet PRE-<lb />
DICTIONECC 29, LR 25, in a free scoring contest.<lb />

game. Pika won the game by a 19-7<lb />
score.<lb />
The first half of play ended in a<lb />
scoreless deadlock. Pika dominated<lb />
play in the third period. Wilbur Pos-<lb />

so scored the extra point cm a pass<lb />
play from Hunt.<lb />
With the score 12-7 and only four<lb />
minutes remaining Pika started an-<lb />
other drive on their own 40 yard line.<lb />

Nu started passing, but Melvin<lb />
Hooker. a Pika pledge from Virginia<lb />
Ilearh, intercepted the pigskin. Pika<lb />
then ran out the clock.<lb />

POVERTY CAN BE FUN<lb />
It it no disgrace to be poor. It is an error, but it is no ' ; rraoe.<lb />
So if your purse is empty, do not skulk and brood u<lb />
your head in shame. Stand tall. Admit your poverty. A . t it<lb />
freely and frankly and all kinds of good things will hi o jo<lb />
you. Take, for instance, the case of Blossom Sigafoos.<lb />
Blossom, an impecunious freshman at an East, n g rkf<lb />
college, was smart as a whip and round as a du: and<lb />
scarcely a day went by when she didn't get invited to rty<lb />
weekend at one of the nearby men's schools. But Bi "t<lb />
accepted. She did not have the rail fare; she did not have tbi<lb />
elothee. Weekend after weekend, while her classmate went<lb />
frolicking, Blossom ami alone, saved from utter despu ?<lb />
by her pack of Marlboros, for even an exchequer a rim as<lb />
i's can afford the Joys of Marlborojoys far r- y ad<lb />
paltry price: rich, mellow tobaccos, lovincly cured and<lb />
carefully packed, and an exclusive selectrate filter. & <lb />
himself could not buy a better cigarette!<lb />
However, Marlboro's most passionate admirersamenf<lb />
whose number I am paid to count myselfwould not elai that<lb />
Marlboro can entirely replace love and romance, and loa<lb />
ww steadily moroser.<lb />
Then one day came a phone call from an intelligent -<lb />
vxxnBaed Tom CShanter at a nearby men's collec<lb />
am' said Tom, "I want you to come down next week tot the<lb />
barley festival, and I won't take no for an answer<lb />
;Nosaid Bloeaom.<lb />
"Fooliah girl said Tom gently. "I know whv you rvijes<lb />
me, It is because you are poor, isn't it?"<lb />
"Yea said Blossom.<lb />
"I will send you a railroad ticket said Tom. "Also a hat<lb />
boiled egg in case you get hungry on the train<lb />
But I have nothing to wear said Blossom.<lb />
Tom replied, "I will send you one suit of cashmere, tw g wns<lb />
lace, three slacks of velvet, four shoes of calf, five aoob of<lb />
2$L and a P148 in Pear tree<lb />
That is most kind said Blossom, "but I fear I oanuot<lb />
