Tanya Anderson and Dwight Smith<lb />
were recently selected Miss and Mr.<lb />

selected as an alternate for Miss<lb />
Future Teacher.<lb />
Several other seniors were eligible<lb />
for election. They were: Ann Johnson,<lb />
Ann Pleasants, Patricia Carolyn<lb />
Dunn, and Leslie Cole.<lb />
Tanya, a senior from Falkland has<lb />
served on many committees of the<lb />
NEA and also helped conduct var-<lb />
ious programs. Last year she at-<lb />
tended the state convention of the<lb />
Future Teachers Department of the<lb />
NICBA which was held in Wilmington.<lb />
She was not a member of an FTA<lb />
club in high school because her school<lb />
did not have a chapter. In addition<lb />
to ler work with the NEA, Tanya has<lb />
been active in other organizations on<lb />
the campus. She has been vice-presi-<lb />
dent of the "Y" and also a member<lb />
of the Inter-Religious Council. Proof<lb />
of the fact that her "outside" activi-<lb />
ties are not interferring with her<lb />
scholastic rating is made evident by<lb />
the fact that Tanya has been on the<lb />
honor roll nine times since enrolling<lb />
at East Carolina in 1954.<lb />
By ELNA CAULBERG<lb />
Tanya did her s'udent teaching in<lb />
English at Washington High School.<lb />
Dwight, Mr. Future Teacher, be-<lb />
gan his work early with a FTA club<lb />
f Fuquay Springs. He was a mem-<lb />
ber there from 1950 to 1954. He<lb />
sewed in the capacities of secretary,<lb />
vice-president, and song leader of the<lb />

as a representative to attend a FTA<lb />
Convention held in Raleigh.<lb />
When Dwight enrolled at East Caro-<lb />

' er of the Robert H. Wright Chap-<lb />
T of the Future Teachers. Since<lb />
that time he has served on the float<lb />
decoration commi'tee and the program<lb />
committee. In 1955 he was elected<lb />
Assistant Treasurer.<lb />
Now teaching the seventh grade<lb />
at Greenville Junior High School,<lb />
Dwight made the following statement<lb />
about his future: "I plan to make<lb />
teaching my life career. I want to<lb />
teach the first few years and then<lb />
work my way to a principalship. I'm<lb />
not certain as to where I want to<lb />
teach. I plan to stay in North Caro-<lb />
lina the first few years or to make<lb />
this my permanent teaching area. I<lb />
have always been in'erested in the<lb />
t. aching rofession and 1 do not think<lb />
I would be happy doing anything else.<lb />
I think the real reason I want to<lb />
teach is that I love children and am<lb />
in erested in children<lb />
Janet Hodges, alternate for Miss<lb />
Future Teacher, began her NEA work<lb />
early also by being a charter member<lb />
of the FTA Club at Sanford Central<lb />
High School.<lb />
Having been a member of the NEA<lb />
for five months, Janet, has not had<lb />
t1 e opportunity to serve in any of-<lb />
fie s. She has, however, given her<lb />
support in other ways.<lb />
Janet's list of college honors seem<lb />
to go on endlesslya few of them<lb />
are: 'Recently, she was chosen to<lb />

she was treasurer of her sophomore<lb />

A d mocracy has, its advantages and its<lb />
disadvantages: At the Dave Brubeck enter-<lb />
tainment. a number of students sitting up-<lb />
stairs in the balcony felt the informality of<lb />
the event and proceeded to light up cigarettes.<lb />
It's possible that some were not aware that<lb />
theie were No Smoking signs on each side<lb />
of the balcony railing. However, some of the<lb />
marshals a tempted to do their duty and to<lb />
remind the students that smoking is not per-<lb />
mitted. The uncourteous rebuffs met by them<lb />
reminds us that individuals will abuse their<lb />
privileges without thinkingthat each in-<lb />
dividual smoking could have been the insti-<lb />

On Raising Fee<lb />
Students no doubt feel that the proposed<lb />
tituti rial amendment by SGA treasurer<lb />
concerning the raising of the ac-<lb />
ity fee from eleven to thirteen dollars calls<lb />
I i some explanation, especially in view of<lb />
the tuiti i! fee increase being frowned upon<lb />
the administration (but increased never-<lb />
theless).<lb />
Patterson explained that this year several<lb />
zations which requested funds from<lb />
SGA budget went lacking and others<lb />
found their requests cut. the problem being<lb />
enough money to go around. This year<lb />
even mor organizations have been added<lb />
th SGA and will have to be considered<lb />
when the time rolls around to alloting money.<lb />
Another point which he brought up con-<lb />
cerns the Athletic Fund, which receives 45<lb />
per cent of the Activity Fee. This total of six<lb />
additional dollars to the Activity Fee per<lb />
ident will mean that athletics will receive<lb />
re money for scholarships and better<lb />
equipment. We will be able to provide a better<lb />
offer to sports-minded young men interested<lb />
in improving our athletic record. The treas-<lb />
urer pointed out that he was not criticizing<lb />
the present set-up. but rather interested in<lb />
improving it.<lb />
Hitting the pocketbook will always be<lb />
a tender point. Yet it seems to be a common<lb />
thing among colleges these days in raising<lb />
this particular fee. It's up to the student<lb />
hotly to decide whether the expected results<lb />
will justify the means.<lb />

I'm All For<lb />
Valentine's Bay<lb />
The more cynical members of our<lb />
society will probably laugh when I<lb />
: v that Valentine's Day is one of<lb />
myry favorite "special occasions<lb />
and calls forth my imagination in<lb />
picking out cards to suit the friend.<lb />
In his modern day, one can really<lb />
find all types and sentiments ex-<lb />
pressed, even to the weird "contem-<lb />
P-ar !." t at especially provoke my<lb />
sense of humor.<lb />
But back to the thoughtI think<lb />
it's wonderful that there's a special<lb />
day s t aside to commemorate love<lb />
and friendshipand, oh, yes, senti-<lb />
mentality, in our coldly scientific<lb />
world.<lb />
Know how this "day of love" came<lb />
to be on your calendars? Well, a<lb />
Human priest, Valentine, Bishop of<lb />
Sioleto, preached that love is a good<lb />
enough basis for marriagenot<lb />
money, or -ocial advancement. The<lb />
goad Bishop was beheaded on Febru-<lb />
ary 14, 270 A. D. for refusing to re-<lb />
nounce Christianity. His farewell<lb />
message to his friend, the jailer's<lb />
daughter, was signed "From your<lb />

sidered the first Valentine.<lb />

to b known as Valentine's Day.<lb />
Aiding to the romantic flavor dur-<lb />
ing the 14.h and 15th Centuries there<lb />
was a growing belief that birds mated<lb />
on February 14.<lb />
Later Shakespeare gave popular<lb />
recognition to St. Valentine's Day<lb />
and further popularized it.<lb />
The Valentine custom spread to<lb />
America during the Revolutionary<lb />
War and reached its peak in the<lb />
1880's.<lb />
In the last few years, the custom<lb />
of sending Valentines has become<lb />
more and more popular in America.<lb />
But. today, the sentimental send Val-<lb />
entines not only to their favorite<lb />
of the opposite sex, but also to family<lb />
ami friends. It's become a very special<lb />
day for telling folks how much we<lb />
like them.<lb />
In keeping with this thought, the<lb />
"proper care and consideration" of<lb />
friends comes up. So once again we<lb />
rtuote a few peoj.le who "got there<lb />
first" with some good beliefs.<lb />
Samuel Johnson said, "If a man<lb />
does not make new acquaintances as<lb />
lu- advances through life, he will soon<lb />
find himself alone. A man should<lb />
keep his friendships in constant re-<lb />
pair. To let friendship die away<lb />
by negligence and silence is certainly<lb />
not wise. It is voluntarily to throw<lb />
away one of the greatest comforts<lb />
of this weary pilgrimage<lb />
Henry Ward Beecher said, "Do<lb />
not keep the alabaster boxes of your<lb />
love and tenderness sealed up until<lb />
your friends are dead. Fill their lives<lb />
with sweetness. Seap approving,<lb />

you who are keeping wretched quar-<lb />

them; you who are passing men sul-<lb />

to them out of some silly spite, and<lb />
yet knowing that it would fill you<lb />
with shame and remorse if you<lb />
heard that one of those men were<lb />
dead tomorrow morning; or letting<lb />
your friend's heart ache for a word<lb />
of appreciation or sympathy, which<lb />
you mean to give him someday; If<lb />
you could only know and see and feel,<lb />

Although it's been over a week<lb />

feel that we must comment on how<lb />
good it was and how well it was re-<lb />

it would take to excite the students of<lb />
East Carolina and now we've found<lb />
outjazz! We were delighted to see<lb />
a colored entertainer on the stage,<lb />
so we made it our business to talk<lb />
with Mr. James Butler, chairman of<lb />
the En'ertainment Committee, and<lb />
Dr. John Messick, president of the<lb />
college, to ascertain whether this<lb />
would set a precedent for the future.<lb />
We were informed that college of-<lb />

that t'rere was a negro in the quartet<lb />

Although there is nothing in the<lb />
college charter directly pertaining to<lb />
this mater, the decision is up to the<lb />
Board of Trustees as to future color-<lb />
ed entertainment. Mr. Butler talked at<lb />
length about the quality of the Board<lb />
and stated that the trustees are<lb />
"forward thinking and way ahead<lb />
and Dr. Messick assured us that he<lb />
would bring the matter to the at-<lb />

this meeting. As we stated in a pre-<lb />

Nine o'clock was the zero hourthe<lb />

into OsHion one recent Tuesday night.<lb />
Armed with flashlights and some of-<lb />

their vigil at the door3 of the library<lb />

the word was flashed along Co-Ed<lb />

The local boys really got a kick<lb />
out of the whole thing. With one guy<lb />
huddled in the front seat under a<lb />
coat or a blanket, the car would come<lb />
roaring to a halt at the gate. It was<lb />
awfully funny to them when their<lb />
"date" was discoveredor when they<lb />
would pull out their flashlights and<lb />
shine them right back through the<lb />
windowor when they would wail in<lb />
a high voice that they forgot to sign<lb />
out.<lb />
To some of the girls things weren't<lb />
quite that funny. Girls who had no<lb />
tiding privilege because their average<lb />
was below a "3" came riding in with<lb />
a boy friendand paled. Girls who<lb />
had neglected to sign out when they<lb />
had all piled into the car for burgers<lb />
and Pepsies out at the Drive In came<lb />
riding backand suddenly developed<lb />
indigestion.<lb />
But they tried: "I'm not with him<lb />

The Entertainment Series brought<lb />
some outstanding, famous personality<lb />
to the cam-pus, and everybody went<lb />
to the show. The clubs kept on meet-<lb />

feverishly. The SGA met and passed<lb />
some new rules and sponsored some<lb />
new events, and nobody cared.<lb />
As compared to their fathers and<lb />
grandfathers, today's college student<lb />
might seem to lack interest in col-<lb />

Power Of Speech<lb />
And Press<lb />
By PAT HARVEY<lb />
I HAVE A SAD STORY TO TELL . .<lb />
There have been several unflattering com-<lb />
ments concerning Miss Harvey's review on<lb />
"Teahouse of the August Moon I would<lb />
consider it a privilege and an honor to verify<lb />
these accusations.<lb />
Firstly, some kind students are upset over<lb />
my remarks concerning the noted Mr. Rock-<lb />
wood. Undoubtedly, these impulsive souls<lb />
didn't understand my intentions. I was defi-<lb />
nitely not ondemming Jerry nor was I obli-<lb />
i us of the fact, that he was the star. He<lb />
w is by far the better actor and performer.<lb />
But East Carolina is not particularly con-<lb />
cerned with his prestige. They are mainly<lb />
interested in the talents of their friends,<lb />
who need all kinds of publicity to build up<lb />
their confidences and ego. The playhouse<lb />
consists of amateurs either working for the<lb />
fun of it as a hobby or for a future<lb />
career as their profession. So I would like<lb />
to state that I was not trying to belittle Mr.<lb />
Roekwood's talents, only spotlight Ea:<lb />
Carolina's.<lb />
I do hope everyone realizes that the re-<lb />
view was written by only one person a<lb />
student's opiniqn. I do not consider myself<lb />
a noted authority on the theatre. I have<lb />
witnessed quite a few Broadway shows and<lb />
am very much interested in this phase of<lb />
writing, but the fact remains that I am only<lb />
an amateur.<lb />
I am quite sure that these little "cuts"<lb />
would n t have arisen if the review had<lb />
built up every cctor or actress. as threats to<lb />
Kathryn Cornell or Laurence Oliver. A critic's<lb />
review is made up of the good and bad points<lb />
of a play or movie . . . keep that in your sub-<lb />
conscious.<lb />
If an actor or an actress has gotten him-<lb />
self in a tizzy over a little review by an un-<lb />
known, he is merely proving how gullible and<lb />
impestuous one can be. If he gets that upset<lb />
over this review, he will probably commit<lb />
suicide when TIME- or NEWSWEEK prints<lb />
a message saying his latest piay is not up<lb />
to par . . . that is if any of our actors ever<lb />
make this grade and I hope they will.<lb />
I hope that I havs redeemed myself and<lb />
for the rest of the year, I will be able to<lb />
walk around campus without naving people<lb />
whispering behind my back or glaring <lb />
me as if I had leprosy. Just kidding, actually<lb />
the situation isn't quite that extreme; but<lb />
as one could note by the review I love to<lb />
build up everything . . . glorifier.<lb />

By PAT HARVEY<lb />
Ragsdale.Hall should be interested<lb />
in the following news it has an<lb />
ex-member of the Women's Air Force<lb />
on the first floor. Harriet Lee Maher<lb />
of South Norfolk, Virginia spent three<lb />
years in this branch of the service.<lb />
Actually she was stationed at Lack-<lb />
land Air Force base in San Antonio,<lb />
Texas; but she wasn't there enough to<lb />
call it her home. Not many of East<lb />
Carolina's students can say that they<lb />
have visited 36 of our states. Harriet,<lb />
who, incidentally, was Virginia'3 only<lb />
member, played saxophone and drums<lb />
for the 45-piece U. S. WAF Band.<lb />
This little item accounts for most of<lb />
her travel. Besides appearing in most<lb />
of the United States, she also visited<lb />
Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Har-<lb />
riet's picture with the band has been<lb />
"splashed" all over newspapers and<lb />
magazines.<lb />
While in the band she played saxo-<lb />
phone in concerts and drums in the<lb />
parades. The band was on TV shows,<lb />
"It Could be You" and "I've Got a<lb />
Secret played at Rockfeller Plaza<lb />
in New York, and also at the Minne-<lb />
appolis Acquatennial, the celebrated<lb />
Seafair in Seattle, Washington.<lb />
Undoubtedly, there is no end to Miss<lb />
Maher's musical talents because she<lb />
was also one of the bell ringers. This<lb />
little group played at concerts, gradu-<lb />
ations, and TV shows: but they were<lb />
more in demand at Christmas.<lb />
One of her most memorable exper-<lb />
iences was playing at President Eisen-<lb />
hower's inauguration. They also had<lb />
a whirl of guest turns in connection<lb />
with Wyoming's national famous festi-<lb />
val, Frontier Days<lb />
Quite a few honors have been placed<lb />
in the hands of Miss Maher. Due to<lb />
the. fact that the band traveled by<lb />
plane and were always equipped with<lb />
parachutes, she was required to learn<lb />
the parachute jump. She is one of the<lb />
few women to hold a "Parachute Jump<lb />

in a JET. Miss Maher was one of three<lb />
girls to take the plunge in a "T-33<lb />

usual nonchalant manner, "Yeah, I<lb />

T e North tate Tournament i.s just arouni the corntr and several<lb />
earns are still battling for the top settlings. The top spot has narrowed<lb />
down to a fight between High Point and Lenoir Rhyne.<lb />
The Bears are favored to go and win the conference regular season<lb />
tiown but tome to srnament time, the story maj be a li-tie different.<lb />
Confer no Weaker<lb />
The North State loop has been the weakest this season than in many<lb />
)ra Sur Stan i Raelord Wells, Don Harris, Bill Bowen, Ed Juratic,<lb />
1 Bill Widgeon. Jack Underwood, Dave A'bernathy, and Jack<lb />
iWr. hare de arted since last season, leaving almost every club in the<lb />
ronierence in a rebuilding stage.<lb />
Lenoir Rhyne has been the big surprise this year after losing their<lb />
Korer, Raeforj Wells, plus Walt Cornwell, another All-Conference<lb />
selection. i sew laces in she lineup, the Bears are once again headed<lb />
for mvU Th.ir ability to pace the conference at the present time<lb />
m a good sigfl ' his years weakness as the Bears have "a much weaker<lb />
las. years conference champions.<lb />
Last '. ea I e North State was able to boast an undefeated club,<lb />
Rhyne, I at this year only the Bears and High Point have a chance<lb />
Lading: reeo.d Ea.n Carolina, according to NAIA records<lb />
(excluding three forfeits) should post a respectable mark also. None of<lb />
ree clubs have achieved recognition with wins over strong outside<lb />
competition but have struck to their own league.<lb />
ECC Has Good Chance<lb />
East Carolina. Lenoir Rhyne, and High Point will probably enter<lb />
the tournament a favorites. Atlantic Christian, Western Carolina and<lb />
w: an outside chance but during the regular campaign they<lb />
I -tacked up against the stronger clubs.<lb />
East Carolin-i suffered a big drop in the standings early in the year<lb />
-y were forced o forfeit three games, but since that time have<lb />
come back strong ani now stand a good chance of finishing as high as third<lb />
. :th.<lb />
i oat Howard Porter probably has the best material in the league<lb />
but I - young ani their peak may still be another year away. Sopho-<lb />
c guards Ike Riddick and Jessel Curry are two of the best in the league<lb />
rward D ho Smi h will probably rate as "the best freshman of the<lb />
 , , has the valuable Harold Ingram, a probablyiAll-Conference<lb />
tee, and Joe Piaster, a 6-8 center. Plaster has controlled the backboard<lb />
f BOCs foea this season.<lb />
EOC also has the best reserve strength in the league with Charlie<lb />
iiy MendenhaJU as their "sixth" men.<lb />
h - - Id happen to fall along the wayside on their Lex-<lb />
ington invasion they might still stand a chance in competing in the NADA<lb />
layoffs. The North State tournament and three other teams boast-<lb />
ing the best . Is the Curolinas are eligible to compete tor the Kansas<lb />

All-Conference<lb />
an All-Conference club tfcfe season in basketball, we will take a<lb />
quk ga and name the following five to the select group: Harris Pryor-<lb />
(Western Carolina), Danny Sewell (High Point), Dave King (Appalachian),<lb />
Tony Sellari (Lenoir Rhyne), and Harold Ingram (East Carolina). Any<lb />
her four ECC starters are capable of making the group picked by the<lb />
Greensboro Daily News, which elecL ten.<lb />
1 'he ECC swimming team recently completed their season with a heart-<lb />
it- I, of Georgia. Although the defending NAIA champs<lb />
ost a winning record they accomplished many things.<lb />
Bob Sawyer and Ken Midyette went undefeated for the season, be-<lb />
g the first Pirate mermen ic accomplish this. Midyette's wins in-<lb />
cluded victories ovrt divers from Georgia and Carolina, who had defeated<lb />
him the previous year.<lb />
Sawyei wag built up to be the best backstroker in the state and the<lb />
Greensboro native lived up to expectations. The hard-working junior broke<lb />
the Memorial Pool record, which he had earlier set, and established him-<lb />
self ai c i: the nation's best in his field.<lb />
Alumni Game<lb />
The talk of the Alumni game is still hot among the Varsity Club<lb />
members. Headed oy Jerry Brooks, the club is striving to become one of<lb />
the strongest on campus and the game is expevted to be a big feature by<lb />
March 1st.<lb />
Brooks stated that several former stars such as Dick Cherry, Harold<lb />
OKti Lou Hallow and George Tucker have consented to return along<lb />
with others. Final plans for the game will be completed at their meeting<lb />
this wee<lb />
Intramural Problem<lb />
i all in ramural program has been taking its lump this<lb />

Many times this winter, the games have been postponed due to<lb />

The most recen postponement came due to department meetings.<lb />
y departments require attendance which knocks many students out of<lb />
night Physical Educa ion books stress the need for exercise in our<lb />
and about the only activity a non-athlete student has to partki-<lb />

WRA Basketball<lb />
By PEGGY DAVIS<lb />
In the second round of the WRA<lb />
Basketball Tournament the Cotten<lb />
earn walked off with a win in the<lb />
7.00 game from the Campustrotters,<lb />
after some close scores, breaking away<lb />
in the last quarter to win by 54-38.<lb />
High scorer for Cotten was Janice<lb />
Edwards with 26 points while Clau-<lb />
dine Hodges hit 21 for the Campus-<lb />
trotters.<lb />
The Jarvis Blue Birds continued<lb />
a winning streak by squeezing past<lb />
the Gairett Blueknights by a score<lb />
of 31 3U.<lb />
The tw. teams, stayed neck and<lb />
deck the whole game, although the<lb />
Blueknights were ahead twice by six<lb />
points. In the final quarter, how-<lb />
ever, the Bluebirds hit two field goals<lb />
and a free shot to put them ahead<lb />

that one point put the Bluebirds<lb />

Big Favorites<lb />
East Carolina's swimming teami-1 a st T?rr<lb />
closed out its current season withp18tlMIS HOSt HjCC<lb />
a narrow loss at the hands of visit-(Saturday; BUCS<lb />
ing Georgia University by a margin<lb />
of 44 to 42. The event took place<lb />
in Memorial gymnasium last Satur-<lb />
day.<lb />
Although outscored, the Bucs iad<lb />
four big men in the number one<lb />
bracket as far as placing goes. It<lb />
was Sid Oliver that copped two first<lb />
places and garnered 10 big points<lb />
as well. He won the breast stroke<lb />
and butter fly event. Bob Sawyer<lb />
came through with his usual fine per-<lb />
formance in that he emerged with<lb />
the number one spot in his coveted<lb />
back stroke event. Ken Midgette<lb />
was .second in the scoring honors as<lb />
far as points went for East Carolina.<lb />
Midgette netted himself eight points<lb />
for his diving efforts. Tom Tucker<lb />
was the other Pirate to win a first<lb />
plaee o he won the 100 yard "free<lb />
style. EC also took a first in the med-<lb />
ley relay. The team was composed<lb />
at Bob Sawyer, Sid Oliver, Ted Gart-<lb />
man and Mike Williamson.<lb />
In reviewing the 1957-58 season it<lb />
must be remembered that although<lb />
East Carolina's swimming squad had<lb />
a limited schedule as far as team<lb />
opponents in numbers go, each team<lb />
played was a major power either in<lb />
their own conference or in the na-<lb />
tion. The University of North Caro-<lb />
lina ranks as one of the top swim-<lb />
ming colleges in the United States<lb />
and they beat the Bucs by only a<lb />
close margin. VMI of the southern<lb />
onferene is a sure bet to emerge<lb />
on top of their conference in swim-<lb />
ming again this year. They too did<lb />
anything but run roughshod over the<lb />
Pirate Squad. Now in the final meet<lb />
of the year Georgia has topped the<lb />
Pirate team as well but again the<lb />
sound of the word "lost" does not<lb />
tell t: e entire story. Georgia should<lb />
win the South Eastern Conference<lb />
this year and EC team members have<lb />
nothing to be ashamed of in the fact<lb />
that such a team as this and the other<lb />
two have won over them during the<lb />
past season.<lb />
Swimming Coach Dr. Charles De<lb />
Shaw summed up the close of the<lb />
season by stating that "We had a<lb />
very limited, but rigorous schedule<lb />
this year and perhaps what hurt us<lb />
t: e most was lack of depth in the<lb />
free-style events, as we lost quite a<lb />
few boys in those departments last<lb />
year. I was very pleased with the<lb />
showing the fellows made this year,<lb />
and they, as I, realize that the actual<lb />
scores do not show the progress that<lb />
we feel we made this year<lb />
T e Pirates have a young squad<lb />
and are already looking forward to<lb />
next season in hopes that they can<lb />
come up with a little more depth<lb />
and again emerge as the NAIA<lb />
champions that they were last year.<lb />
By BILL BOYD<lb />
After more than a weeks rest,<lb />
Coach Howard Porter's Pirate bas-<lb />
ketball aggregation journey to Bur-<lb />
ling on, North Carolina this Satur-<lb />
day w ere they will encounter Elon's<lb />
Christians in another North State<lb />
Conference clash. Elon, no doubt,<lb />
will be out to avenge the loss suffered<lb />
by them at the hands of East Caro-<lb />
lina earlier in the reason. EC, on<lb />
the other hand, will not only be try-<lb />
ing to climb back into third place in<lb />
Ce NSC standings but will try to<lb />
continue their offensive surge. They<lb />
lead the conference in the total num-<lb />
ber of points scored and place 9th<lb />
in the national NAIA total basket-<lb />
ball scoring column with an average<lb />
of 83.8 points per game. It is un-<lb />
usual that the Bucs should be so<lb />
high in the total scoring .bracket when<lb />
they have no one near the 20 point<lb />
mark as far as game averaging goes.<lb />
Depth and team work account for the<lb />
pre.sent rating. Jessel Curry, a soph-<lb />
omore from Portsmouth, Virginia,<lb />
leads the team in the scoring parade<lb />
with an unofficial average of 16 points<lb />
per game. Then come Don Smith, Ike<lb />
Riddick, Harold Ingram and Joe Plas-<lb />
ter. All are in the double figure<lb />
bracket. Charlie Adams could break<lb />
into the double figures if he contin-<lb />
ues to lit as he has the last few-<lb />
games.<lb />
Elon Has Height<lb />
Wi h the height of men like Frank<lb />
DeRita . and the scoring punch of<lb />
men like Gilbert Watts, Elon could<lb />
prove quite troublesome to Pirate<lb />
plans. Coach Porter will combat<lb />
Klon's height wttfc a couple of men<lb />
that are quite tall themselves. Guy<lb />
Mendenhall, Joe Plaster, and Don<lb />
Smith all average out to about 6 feet<lb />
6 inches tall. Smith will work at his<lb />
usual forward position while Menden-<lb />
I all and Plaster will hold down the<lb />
center slot. Jessel Curry, Ike Rid-<lb />
boys have been a coup<lb />
of stalwarts on East Carolina's bas-<lb />
ketball club this season. Don Smith<lb />
(upper) is a freshman and has hit<lb />
his prim during the past month.<lb />
Harold Ingram (lower) has been a<lb />
consistent performer and looms as<lb />
a All-Conference nominee.<lb />
dick and Charlie Adams will take care<lb />
of the guard positions. Captain Har-<lb />
old Ingram is the other forward.<lb />
East Carolina could possibly slip<lb />
into the number three spot in North<lb />
State Standings if they defeat Elon<lb />
on Saturday and High Point next<lb />
Wednesday night. This would give<lb />
them a record of 9 wins against 6<lb />
losses, provided they won over Ca-<lb />
tawba last night. It would also rate<lb />
them as possible favorites to win the<lb />
North State Tournament coming up<lb />
soon. A win over Elon and High Point<lb />
will also prove that the Buc team<lb />
can come back strong. Due to three<lb />
forfeits, they at one time held a rec-<lb />
ord of 3 wins against 6 big losses.<lb />
Coach Howard Porter talk- strategy with his club before taxing the floor<lb />
1 he Buck will be favored over Elon Saturday night.<lb />
Bucs Romp Rivals<lb />
East Carolina rode to their third<lb />
straight victory and twelth of the<lb />
season last Thursday by blasting At-<lb />
lantic Christian 69-51 at Rocky Mount.<lb />
The big arch-rivals battled on even<lb />
terms for only a short time as Joe<lb />
Plaster, 6-8 center, and Don Smith,<lb />
a 6-5 forward, took over both back-<lb />
boards to pace the Bucs to their<lb />
sixth conference win of the season<lb />
and their first over ACC at Rocky<lb />
Mount in three years.<lb />
Smith, the smooth-working fresh-<lb />
man dropped in 15 points along with<lb />
Harold Ingram to pace the Pirates<lb />
well-rounded scoring attack. Jessel<lb />
Curry, Charlie Adams, and Ike Rid-<lb />
dick also hit in double figures for<lb />
the winners.<lb />
